Recycling the condensate water of the air conditioner could be explored as an alternative water source to contribute to building the green campus. This paper explored the condensate water production through actual measurement based on a split air handling unit (SAHU) in a university building. Then, the statistical analysis was used to analyze the recycling feasibility and the impact factors of the condensate water production in 31 Chinese provincial capital cities to obtain the recycling potential map of the condensate water generated from a SAHU. Results showed that: (1) In the measurement, the amount of condensate water produced by a single split air conditioner was 1.6 kg from 12:40 to 13:40. Therefore, the daily output of condensate water of the air conditioner with the university operation schedule could reach 52.99 kg during the main air-conditioning season. (2) Among the 31 provincial capital cities in China, the largest condensate water outputs could be found in the Hot Summer and Warm Winter zone and the Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone, with an average monthly output of 1600 kg and 1100 kg, respectively. (3) Regression analysis showed that the dry-bulb temperature and dew point temperature of outdoor air had the highest positive and significant influence on condensate water production. The objective of this study is to provide theoretical guidance for the design and energy conservation evaluation of the feasibility of SAHU condensate water recycling in universities.

A structured grid enables higher computational fidelity and better convergence in the calculation of high-precision complex simulation problems, particularly for high-speed flow field or multiphase flow. However, its generation is usually difficult, labor-intensive, and time-consuming; thus, how to quickly generate a quality structured grid is a frontier topic in various simulation scenarios, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Metallurgical vessels need to be served at high temperatures, and their inner cavity are filled with refractory materials. The structure is usually relatively regular. According to the geometric structural characteristics of metallurgical vessels, parametric modeling and mesh generation have been adopted to successfully develop a fast mesh generation tool suitable for metallurgical reactors by taking advantage of batch data processing of Python Script and open-source CFD software OpenFOAM. Following the analysis of the internal topological logical relationship of the target geometry structure, it was divided into several basic geometric units, such as torus, cones, and quadrilateral columns, and their geometric parameters and topological parameters were obtained. The shape and spatial position of the basic geometric structure were determined by its geometric control parameters. The code was written according to the topological relation of the target geometry structure, and the structured grid of basic geometry units was gradually stacked into the target geometry structure. Thousands of coordinate information can be output and sorted using Python Script according to the predetermined logic in a short time. After script execution, a dictionary file called blockMeshDict required by blockMesh can be generated and then converted into a .msh file. With ladle, tundish, mold, and its auxiliary connecting device as examples, a mesh-generation tool is developed and examined. Consequently, the generated grid had high quality considering its checking distortion and orthogonality, which can meet the needs of various simulations. This tool exhibits remarkable advantages over traditional pretreatment methods in solving the geometric structure update and mesh adjustment of metallurgical vessels (e.g., changing the position of the retaining wall in tundish and the position of the bottom blowing plugs in the ladle) and can quickly generate high-quality structured meshes in several or tens of seconds. A user-friendly graphical user interface was also developed, which only needed key geometric structure and mesh parameters, and the corresponding structured mesh can be generated conveniently. The program is continuously being optimized to provide more visual and interactive performance. It can effectively improve the simplicity and efficiency of preprocessing. This tool is expected to be applied to digitalization and intelligent transformation for the metallurgical industry and provide effective support in industrial software.

The unluckiest star orbits a supermassive black hole elliptically. Every time it reaches the pericenter, it shallowly enters the tidal radius and gets partially tidally disrupted, producing a series of flares. Confirmation of a repeated partial tidal disruption event (pTDE) requires not only evidence to rule out other types of transients but also proof that only one star is involved, as TDEs from multiple stars can also produce similar flares. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a repeated pTDE, AT 2022dbl. In a quiescent galaxy at z = 0.0284, two separate optical/UV flares have been observed in 2022 and 2024 with no bright X-ray, radio, or mid-infrared counterparts. Compared to the first flare, the second flare has a similar blackbody temperature of ∼26,000 K, slightly lower peak luminosity, and slower rise and fall phases. Compared to the Zwicky Transient Facility TDEs, their blackbody parameters and light-curve shapes are all similar. The spectra taken during the second flare show a steeper continuum than the late-time spectra of the previous flare, consistent with a newly risen flare. More importantly, the possibility of two independent TDEs can be largely ruled out because the optical spectra taken around the peak of the two flares exhibit highly similar broad Balmer, N iii, and possible He ii emission lines, especially the extreme ∼4100 Å emission lines. This represents the first robust spectroscopic evidence for a repeated pTDE, which can soon be verified by observing the third flare, given its short orbital period.

Abstract Ongoing runoff declines in the Colorado River Basin have been shown to be predominately driven by decreasing albedo from warming‐driven snow‐cover loss, especially in late‐spring (hereafter snowmelt‐radiation feedback). Here, we explore the feedback's impact on annual runoff sensitivity to warming across the western U.S. (WUS) using hydrologic model simulations. For 1°C uniform warming, we show that runoff is most sensitive to warming in modestly snow‐covered, interior mountain headwaters, especially the Rocky Mountains. Runoff sensitivities are most associated with the snowmelt‐radiation feedback in basins with runoff coefficients between 0.2 and 0.6, where runoff sensitivity increases with more snow and lower winter temperature. In aggregate, ∼48% of WUS runoff sensitivity is attributable to the snowmelt‐radiation feedback and is especially pronounced in the warming‐sensitive river basins (annual runoff decreases >5%/°C). We also show that the feedback's impact decreases with increasing temperature, which has unresolved implications for streamflow declines in a less‐snow future.

To solve the problems of low consolidation strength and high energy consumption of vanadium-titanium magnetite (VTM) pellets, high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology can be used to pretreat the raw materials (VTM concentrate). Compared with other technologies, HPGR pretreatment has the advantages of high efficiency and low energy consumption. This study discovered that the quantities of titaniferous magnetite particles with coarse size and regular shape were dominant in VTM concentrate. Lower surface area resulted in lower microcrystalline and recrystallization bonding strength of titaniferous hematite in VTM pellets. In this study, HPGR pretreatment technology was used in the preparation of VTM pellets. Experiments confirmed that the high pressure supplied by HPGR could increase the total contact area between particles in VTM pellets, which was conducive to form more microcrystalline and recrystallization connections of titaniferous hematite. The performance of VTM green pellets was greatly improved by HPGR pretreatment, the preheating temperature could be reduced about 100 °C, the roasting temperature could be decreased 60–80 °C, the preheating and roasting time could also be correspondingly shortened. These research results will provide important insights to solve the problems of low strength and high energy consumption of VTM pellets.

An eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) consisting mainly of a face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and a C14 Laves phase with the compositions of Co25.1Cr18.8Fe23.3Ni22.6Ta8.5Al1.7 (at%) was successfully prepared by hot isostatic pressing. The present EHEA exhibits a skeleton-type Laves phase structure, deviating from typical EHEA structures. After a series of annealing treatments at 1000 °C for different durations (ranging from 0 to 150 h), the Co3Ta phase precipitated after annealing. The mechanical properties measured at 850 °C showed a tensile strength of 441 MPa and an elongation of 3.3%. The results of the high-temperature tests showed that the mechanical properties of this alloy did not change significantly before and after annealing, and its microstructure showed a high degree of stability, which suggests that the material has some potential for use in high-temperature environments.

In this work, we investigated the mechanical behavior of a low-cost Zr51.9Cu23.3Ni10.5Al14.3 (at. %) metallic glass ribbon prepared with industrial-grade material through the melt-spinning method. The ribbons have good appearances and almost no defects. The mechanical behavior associated with the corresponding microstructure of the ribbon was tested at different strain rates. Striation and veining patterns were observed in the crack propagation zone and the fast fracture zone. The results show that the tensile strength of the ribbons exceeds 1 GPa. Therefore, they are considered to have good potential for industrial applications. This study could contribute to the preparation of low-cost bulk metallic glass.

Abstract Background Ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer (UC-CRC) is an important complication of ulcerative colitis. Pou3f1 (POU class 3 homeobox 1) is a critical regulator for developmental events and cellular biological processes. However, the role of Pou3f1 in the development of UC-CRC is unclear. Methods In vivo, a UC-CRC mouse model was induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Body weight, colon length, mucosal damage, tumor formation, and survival rate were assessed to determine the progression of UC-CRC. Western blot, quantitative real-time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and TUNEL were performed to examine the severity of inflammation and tumorigenesis. In vitro, LPS-treated mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and RAW264.7 cells were used to study the role of Pou3f1 in inflammation. ChIP and luciferase reporter assays were used to confirm the interaction between Nfatc3 and Pou3f1. Results Pou3f1 expression was increased in the colons of UC-CRC mice, and its inhibition attenuated mucosal injury, reduced colon tumorigenesis and increased survival ratio. Knockdown of Pou3f1 suppressed cell proliferation and increased cell death in colon tumors. Both the in vivo and in vitro results showed that Pou3f1 depletion reduced the production of proinflammation mediators. In addition, ChIP and luciferase reporter assays demonstrated that Nfatc3 directly bound with the Pou3f1 promoter to induce its expression. The effect of Nfatc3 on the inflammatory response in macrophages was suppressed by Pou3f1 knockdown. Conclusion Overall, it outlines that Pou3f1 mediates the role of Nfatc3 in regulating macrophage inflammation and carcinogenesis in UC-CRC development.

Abstract Summer streamflow variations strongly affect water supply reliability and ecological functioning of western U.S. (WUS) streams. Traditional snow‐based forecasts of summer streamflow are becoming less accurate with warming‐induced reductions in winter snow accumulation. This reflects a rising importance of competing runoff‐generating processes in controlling summer streamflow variations, primarily an increasing role of rainfall in contrast to snowmelt. Here, based on a snowmelt‐rainfall tracking algorithm applied to two hydrological models, we show that cool‐season rainfall provides an important volumetric contribution to summer streamflow for many WUS streams in the current climate, and this contribution will increase under climate warming, especially in years with warm snow droughts and abnormally dry summers. We also show that seasonal rainfall (warm‐/cool‐seasons) dominates the variability of summer streamflow across ∼70% area of WUS. We show that an increasing warm‐season rainfall contribution to summer streamflow (largely replacing snowmelt) results in reduced summer streamflow predictability.

IntroductionUlcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by recurrent and remitting inflammation of the mucosa of the colon and rectum, the incidence of which is on the rise. Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a newly discovered neurotrophic factor, but its efficacy and mechanism of action in UC remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the protective effects and potential targets of GLP-2 on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC in mice through integrative analysis.MethodsThe effects of GLP-2 on UC were assessed by calculating the disease activity index, colonic mucosal damage index, and pathological histological scores. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of GLP-2, nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3). The 16SrRNA gene was used to detect changes in gut microbiota in mouse colonic tissues, and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) blood glucose levels were used to analyze the differences in flora.ResultsThe results showed that GLP-2 could reduce the inflammation of UC mice, which may be achieved by inhibiting the potential targets of NF-κB, and Janus kinase (JAK)/STAT3 inflammatory pathways, regulating sugar metabolism, increasing dominant species, and improving microbial diversity.DiscussionThis study provides new insight into the potential of GLP-2 for achieving more ideal UC treatment goals in future.

Quantitative assessment of hand function can assist therapists in providing appropriate rehabilitation strategies, which plays an essential role in post-stroke rehabilitation. Conventionally, the assessment process relies heavily on clinical experience and lacks quantitative analysis. To quantitatively assess the hand motor function of patients with post-stroke hemiplegia, this study proposes a novel multi-modality fusion assessment framework. This framework includes three components: the kinematic feature extraction based on a graph convolutional network (HAGCN), the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal processing based on a multi-layer long short term memory (LSTM) network, and the quantitative assessment based on the multi-modality fusion. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of applying a graph convolution network to assess the hand motor function. We also collect the kinematic data and sEMG data from 70 subjects who completed 28 types of hand movements. Therapists first graded patients using traditional motor assessment scales (Brunnstrom Scale and Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale) and further refined the patient’s motor assessment result by their experience. Then, we trained the HAGCN and LSTM networks and quantitatively assessed each patient based on the proposed assessment framework. Finally, the Spearman correlation coefficient (SC) between the assessment result of this study and the traditional scale are 0.908 and 0.967, demonstrating a significant correlation between the proposed assessment and the traditional scale scores. In addition, the SC value between the score of this study and the refined hand motor function is 0.997, indicating the “ceiling effect” of some traditional scales can be avoided.

ObjectiveObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder with high prevalence and is associated with cognitive impairment. Previous neuroimaging studies have reported abnormal brain functional connectivity (FC) in patients with OSA that might contribute to their neurocognitive impairments. However, it is unclear whether patients with OSA have a characteristic pattern of FC changes that can serve as a neuroimaging biomarker for identifying OSA.MethodsA total of 21 patients with OSA and 21 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study and scanned using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The automated anatomical labeling (AAL) atlas was used to divide the cerebrum into 90 regions, and FC between each pair of regions was calculated. Univariate analyses were then performed to detect abnormal FCs in patients with OSA compared with controls, and multivariate pattern analyses (MVPAs) were applied to classify between patients with OSA and controls.ResultsThe univariate comparisons did not detect any significantly altered FC. However, the MVPA showed a successful classification between patients with OSA and controls with an accuracy of 83.33% (p = 0.0001). Furthermore, the selected FCs were associated with nearly all brain regions and widely distributed in the whole brain, both within and between, many resting-state functional networks. Among these selected FCs, 3 were significantly correlated with the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and 2 were significantly correlated with the percentage of time with the saturation of oxygen (SaO2) below 90% of the total sleep time (%TST < 90%).ConclusionThere existed widespread abnormal FCs in the whole brain in patients with OSA. This aberrant FC pattern has the potential to serve as a neurological biomarker of OSA, highlighting its importance for understanding the complex neural mechanism underlying OSA and its cognitive impairment.

Energy metabolism disturbance and the consequent reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction play a key and pathogenic role in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Dihuang-Yinzi (DHYZ) is a traditional Chinese herbal prescription clinically applied to treat AD and other neurodegenerative diseases for a long time. However, the systematical metabolic mechanism of DHYZ against AD remains largely unclear. Here we aimed to explore the mechanism of DHYZ in the treatment of AD comprehensively in an in vivo metabolic context by performing metabolomics analysis coupled with network pharmacology study and experimental validation. The network pharmacology was applied to dig out the potential target of DHYZ against AD. The metabolomics analysis based on UPLC-HRMS was carried out to profile the urine of 2× Tg-AD mice treated with DHYZ. By integrating network pharmacology and metabolomics, we found DHYZ could ameliorate 4 key energy-related metabolic pathways, including glycerophospholipid metabolism, nicotinate/nicotinamide metabolism, glycolysis, and tricarboxylic acid cycle. Besides, we identified 5 potential anti-AD targets of DHYZ, including DAO, HIF1A, PARP1, ALDH3B2, and ACHE, and 14 key differential metabolites involved in the 4 key energy-related metabolic pathways. Furthermore, DHYZ depressed the mitochondrial dysfunction and the resultant ROS overproduction through ameliorating glycerophospholipid metabolism disturbance. Thereby DHYZ increased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) content and promoted glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and consequently improved oxidative phosphorylation and energy metabolism. In the present study, we provided a novel, comprehensive and systematic insight into investigating the therapeutic efficacy of DHYZ against AD via ameliorating energy-related metabolism.

Abstract Objective Posterior open-door laminoplasty (PODL) is a common procedure for treating multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (MCSM). Little information is available regarding the cervical sagittal balance and surgical efficacy of PODL when securing with different methods. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the clinical outcomes and the changes in cervical sagittal parameters and balance associated with PODL secured with titanium miniplates vs anchors. Method A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 79 patients with MCSM who were treated in our institution from January 2015 to December 2016. Among them, 42 patients were treated by PODL secured with titanium miniplates (group A) and 37 patients by PODL secured with anchors (group B). Surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, hospitalized cost, VAS scores of neck pain, JOA scores, neck disability index (NDI), and improvement rate of spinal neurological function (IRNF) were recorded before surgery and at 12 months after surgery. Before surgery, at 1 month and 2 years after surgery, the following radiological parameters were recorded and compared on the lateral cervical X-ray images: the distance from the vertical axis of C2 sagittal plane to the posterior superior edge of C7 (C2-7 SVA), the inclusion angle of tangent between C2 and C7 trailing edge (C2-7 Cobb angle), and the intersection angle between the upper edge of T1 and the horizontal line (T1 Slope). Result Comparing the two groups, there were no significant differences in surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, VAS, JOA, and NDI scores before surgery (P > 0.05); however, the hospitalized cost of group A were much higher than those of the group B (P < 0.05). At 2 years after surgery in the two groups, there was a significant reduction in VAS and NDI scores (P < 0.05), and JOA scores increased significantly (P < 0.05). In addition, there were no significant differences in VAS, JOA and IRNF between the two groups (P > 0.05); however, NDI scores of group A were better than those of group B (P < 0.05). In radiological parameters, before surgery, the two groups showed no significant differences in C2-7 SVA, C2-7 Cobb angle, and T1 slope (P > 0.05); however, after surgery, C2-7 SVA and T1 slope increased (P < 0.05), while C2-7 Cobb angle decreased (P < 0.05). At 2 years after surgery, the two groups did not differ significantly in C2-7 Cobb angle and T1 slope (P > 0.05), while C2-7 SVA of group A was superior to that of group B (P < 0.05). The difference value of C2-7 SVA measured before and after surgery was correlated negatively with that of NDI scores (P < 0.05). Conclusion PODL secured with titanium miniplates or anchors achieved good clinical efficacy in the treatment of MCSM. However, the patients with miniplates feel a better cervical functional status, while those with anchors spend less on hospitalization. Both methods lead to anteversion of cervical spine, but cervical sagittal balance after miniplates is better than that of anchors.

During the roasting process of fluxed pellets in a coal-fired rotary kiln, the incomplete combustion of pulverized coal injection accelerates deposit formation, which further limits the production efficiency of fluxed pellets. In order to eliminate the above problem, this study investigated the influence of MgO on deposit formation mechanism. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that MgO could increase the melting temperature of silicates in fluxed pellets with 0.8–1.2 basicity (CaO/SiO2) when roasted at 1200–1250 °C, thereby decreasing the amount of liquid phase that formed initial deposits. XRD and SEM analyses of deposit simulants demonstrated that the addition of MgO was conducive to form magnesium magnetite and ferri-diopside, thereby avoiding the formation of hedenbergite with lower melting temperature. Moreover, the softening-melting performance and adhesivity tests confirmed that MgO had a positive effect on reducing liquid-phase deposition and inhibiting the adhesion of deposits on refractory bricks below 1250 °C. The above studies indicated that the addition of MgO helped to slow down the deposit formation of fluxed pellets prepared by coal-fired rotary kiln.

The molten salt chlorination method is more suitable to produce TiCl4 using titanium-containing materials with high contents of CaO and MgO in China. However, there is a large amount of molten salt chloride slags generated from the molten salt chlorination process, which contains a variety of chlorides and is difficult to treat, often causing serious environmental problems such as direct piling or landfilling. A novel process was proposed to deal with molten salt chloride slags, and calcium chloride could be effectively removed by this process (as in our previous study). However, magnesium chloride is another impurity which can deteriorate the density and viscosity of the molten salt; it is often found in higher contents, and should be also removed from molten salt chloride slags to efficiently recycle NaCl in novel processes. Na2SiO3 is added to the molten salt chloride slags in the molten state to produce the Mg-containing solid phase, which could be separated with the molten NaCl in novel processes. Thus, the transition of Mg-containing phases and the recovery of NaCl in molten salt chloride slags at high temperature in a novel process were systematically investigated in this work, including thermodynamic analysis, the phase transition behavior of Mg-containing phases, NaCl recovery, etc. The removal rate of Mg was 99.56% when the molar ratio of MgCl2:Na2SiO3 was 1:1.5 at 1273 K and in a N2 atmosphere. The recovery rate of NaCl from the molten salt chlorination slag was 97.62% and the purity of NaCl obtained was 99.35 wt%, which could be used in the molten salt chlorination process.

Background We compared the outcomes of three fixation techniques for Müller type C2 and C3 distal femoral fractures. Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients undergoing internal fixation for Müller type C2 and C3 distal femoral fractures via locking plate (Group A), lateral locking condylar plate and medial contoured reconstruction plate (Group B), and lateral locking condylar plate and anterior reconstruction plate (Group C). Knee joint functional recovery and functional outcomes were evaluated 12 months postoperatively. Results Patients included 34 men and 24 women aged 25 to 74 years (mean, 50.3 ± 10.73 years). Operating times were longest in Group B and similar in Groups A and C. Bleeding volume in Group A was smaller than in Group B and similar to that of Group C. Functional outcomes were excellent in 18 (31%) fractures, good in 24 (41%), moderate in 11 (19%), and poor in 5 (9%). Good-to-excellent results were achieved in 56%, 82%, and 83% of patients (Groups A, B, and C, respectively). Groups B and C's outcomes were superior to Group A's outcomes. No significant difference in postoperative complications between the groups existed. Conclusion Lateral locking condylar and anterior reconstruction plating was useful for complex type C distal femoral fractures.

Abstract Background Studies have shown that adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) is a common complication after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), even a second surgery is required for some patients. It remains unclear whether the non-fusion surgery can relieve ASD. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the clinical outcomes of Topping-off surgery (fusion combined with Coflex) and PLIF for degenerative lumbar disease (DLD) and the efficacy on preventing ASD. Method A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 99 patients with DLD from January 2011 to December 2014, who were performed by Topping-off surgery (L4–5 PLIF + L3–4 Coflex, n = 45) or PLIF (L3–5 PLIF, n = 54). All patients included in the analysis had a minimum of 3 years of follow-up. Clinical data were used to assess the clinical efficacy, and radiographic parameters were measured for evaluation of the incidence of ASD. Results The mean ages of Topping-off group and PLIF group were 53.5 and 65.7 years old, respectively (P 0.05), while that of PLIF group was increased considerably (P 0.05). Lumbar MRI at three post-operative years indicated that the modified Pfirrman grading of disc (L2–L3) in the Topping-off group was much better than that of the PLIF group (P

Precise expression of a transgene in the desired manner is important for plant genetic engineering and gene function deciphering, but it is a challenge to obtain specific transgene expression free from the interference of the constitutive promoters used to express the selectable marker gene, such as the Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. So, the solutions to avoid these inappropriate regulations are largely demanded. In this study, we report the characterization of a callus strong promoter (CSP1) in rice and its application for accurate transgene expression. Our results indicate that the high expression of the CSP1 promoter in the callus enables efficient selection of hygromycin equivalent to that provided by the CaMV 35S promoter, whereas its expression in other tissues is low. To evaluate possible leaky effects, the expression of a β-glucuronidase reporter driven by six specific promoters involving hormone signaling, pathogen response, cell fate determination, and proliferation was observed in transgenic rice plants generated by CSP1-mediated selection. Distinct β-glucuronidase expression was found consistently in most of the transgenic lines obtained for each promoter. In addition, we applied these specific marker lines to investigate the root cellular responses to exogenous cytokinin and auxin treatment. The results reveal that the root growth inhibition by cytokinin was differently regulated at high and low concentrations. In summary, we have established the feasibility of using callus-specific promoter-dependent selection to mitigate the transgene misexpression in rice. By enabling efficient transformation, rice plants with reliable transgene expression will be easily acquired for broad applications.

The start-up of the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process under low temperature is challenging. In this study, the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was fed with synthetic wastewater and the temperature was controlled at 15 ℃. The main components in the synthetic wastewater were sodium acetate and ammonium chloride. The influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N concentrations were 300 and 60 mg/L, respectively. The AGS was successfully cultivated in 60 days by gradually shortening the settling time. During the stable operation stage (61–100 d), the average effluent COD, NH4+-N, NO2−-N, and NO3−-N concentrations were 47.2, 1.0, 47.2, and 5.1 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) reached 90.6%. Batch test showed that the smaller AGS had higher NH4+-N removal rate while the larger AGS performed higher NAR. The NH4+-N removal rates of R1 (1.0–2.0 mm), R2 (2.0–3.0 mm), and R3 (>3 mm) granules were 0.85, 0.61, and 0.45 g N/(kg VSS·h), respectively. Meanwhile, the NAR of R1, R2, and R3 were 36.2%, 77.2%, and 94.9%, respectively. The obtained results could provide important guidance for the cultivation of AGS in low-temperature wastewater treatment.

In this paper, the ((CoCrFeNi)95Nb5)100−xMox (x = 1, 1.5 and 2) high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings were fabricated on the substrate of 45# steel by laser cladding process under different laser beam power. The influence of laser beam power and molybdenum element content on the microstructure and microhardness of the HEA coatings was investigated. Results show that the HEA coatings were composed of face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and Laves phase, had low porosity, and bonded well to the substrate. The Mo1 coating is composed of cellular dendritic structures and columnar dendritic structures. With the increase of molybdenum element content, the columnar dendritic structures disappeared, the grains are refined, and the arrangement of grains is more compact. The volume fraction of the interdendritic phase under the laser beam power of 800 W was small and irregular. After the laser beam power was increased to 1000 W, the volume fraction of the interdendritic phase was increased. Under the laser beam power of 1200 W, the volume fraction of the interdendritic phase was small again. Therefore, the coatings fabricated under the laser beam power of 1000 W had a larger volume fraction of the interdendritic phase and higher microhardness. With the increase in molybdenum content, the grain changed from columnar dendrite to cellular dendrite, and the microhardness of the coating increased. The characteristics of the laser cladding process, the formation of Laves phase, and the fine grain strengthening lead to high microhardness of the coatings.

Abstract Since the disclosure of the “Illegal vaccine operation series case in Jinan, Shandong” in March, 2016, this issue has attracted a great deal of attention and has led to public concerns about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines involved in this case. The main purpose of this paper is to scientifically and scrupulously predict the possible geographic distribution of illegal vaccines in China, and provide a foundation to guide future governmental policies and actions. A species distribution model was used because of the advantages of using presence/pseudo-absence or presence-only data, and it performs well with incomplete species distribution data. A series of socioeconomic variables were used to simulate habitat suitability distribution. Maxent (Maximum Entropy Model) and GARP (Genetic Algorithm for Rule set Production) were used to predict the risks of illegal vaccines in China, and define the spatial distribution and significant factors of the area at risk from illegal vaccines. Jackknife tests were used to evaluate the relative importance of socioeconomic variables. It was found that: (1) Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui are the main high-risk areas impacted by the vaccines involved in Jinan case. (2) Population density and industrial structure are the main socioeconomic factors affecting areas which may be at risk from illegal vaccines.

Snowmelt water is essential to the water resources management over the Three-River Headwater Region (TRHR), where hydrological processes are influenced by snowmelt runoff and sensitive to climate change. The objectives of this study were to analyse the contribution of snowmelt water to the total streamflow (fQ,snow) in the TRHR by applying a snowmelt tracking algorithm and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model. The ratio of snowfall to precipitation, and the variation of the April 1 snow water equivalent (SWE) associated with fQ,snow, were identified to analyse the role of snowpack in the hydrological cycle. Prior to the simulation, the VIC model was validated based on the observed streamflow data to recognize its adequacy in the region. In order to improve the VIC model in snow hydrology simulation, Advanced Scanning Microwave Radiometer E (ASMR-E) SWE product data was used to compare with VIC output SWE to adjust the snow parameters. From 1971 to 2007, the averaged fQ,snow was 19.9% with a significant decreasing trend over entire TRHR (p < 0.05).The influence factor resulted in the rate of change in fQ,snow which were different for each sub-basin TRHR. The decreasing rate of fQ,snow was highest of 0.24%/year for S_Lantsang, which should be due to the increasing streamflow and the decreasing snowmelt water. For the S_Yangtze, the increasing streamflow contributed more than the stable change of snowmelt water to the decreasing fQ,snow with a rate of 0.1%/year. The April 1 SWE with the minimum value appearing after 2000 and the decreased ratio of snowfall to precipitation during the study period, suggested the snow solid water resource over the TRHR was shrinking. Our results imply that the role of snow in the snow-hydrological regime is weakening in the TRHR in terms of water supplement and runoff regulation due to the decreased fQ,snow and snowfall.

Developing cost-effective soft magnetic alloys with excellent mechanical properties is very important to energy-saving industries. This study investigated the magnetic and mechanical properties of a series of (Fe0.3Co0.5Ni0.2)100−x(Al1/3Si2/3)x high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (x = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 25) at room temperature. The Fe0.3Co0.5Ni0.2 base alloy composition was chosen since it has very the smallest saturation magnetostriction coefficient. It was found that the (Fe0.3Co0.5Ni0.2)95(Al1/3Si2/3)5 alloy maintains a simple face-centered cubic (FCC) solid solution structure in the states of as-cast, cold-rolled, and after annealing at 1000 °C. The alloy after annealing exhibits a tensile yield strength of 235 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 572 MPa, an elongation of 38%, a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 1.49 T, and a coercivity of 96 A/m. The alloy not only demonstrates an optimal combination of soft magnetic and mechanical properties, it also shows advantages of easy fabrication and processing and high thermal stability over silicon steel and amorphous soft magnetic materials. Therefore, the alloy of (Fe0.3Co0.5Ni0.2)95(Al1/3Si2/3)5 holds good potential as next-generation soft magnets for wide-range industrial applications.

Real-time traffic signal control is very important for relieving urban traffic congestion. Many existing traffic control models were formulated using optimization approach, with the objective functions of minimizing vehicle delay time. To improve people’s trip efficiency, this article aims to minimize delay time per person. Based on the time-varying traffic flow data at intersections, the article first fits curves of accumulative arrival and departure vehicles, as well as the corresponding functions. Moreover, this article transfers vehicle delay time to personal delay time using average passenger load of cars and buses, employs such time as the objective function, and proposes a signal timing optimization model for intersections to achieve real-time signal parameters, including cycle length and green time. This research further implements a case study based on practical data collected at an intersection in Beijing, China. The average delay time per person and queue length are employed as evaluation indices to show the performances of the model. The results show that the proposed methodology is capable of improving traffic efficiency and is very effective for real-world applications.

The purpose of this paper is to report the noninvasive imaging of hepatic tumors without contrast agents. Both normal tissues and tumor tissues can be detected, and tumor tissues in different stages can be classified quantitatively. We implanted BEL-7402 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells into the livers of nude mice and then imaged the livers using X-ray in-line phase-contrast imaging (ILPCI). The projection images' texture feature based on gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and dual-tree complex wavelet transforms (DTCWT) were extracted to discriminate normal tissues and tumor tissues. Different stages of hepatic tumors were classified using support vector machines (SVM). Images of livers from nude mice sacrificed 6 days after inoculation with cancer cells show diffuse distribution of the tumor tissue, but images of livers from nude mice sacrificed 9, 12, or 15 days after inoculation with cancer cells show necrotic lumps in the tumor tissue. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA) of the texture features based on GLCM of normal regions were positive, but those of tumor regions were negative. The results of PCA of the texture features based on DTCWT of normal regions were greater than those of tumor regions. The values of the texture features in low-frequency coefficient images increased monotonically with the growth of the tumors. Different stages of liver tumors can be classified using SVM, and the accuracy is 83.33%. Noninvasive and micron-scale imaging can be achieved by X-ray ILPCI. We can observe hepatic tumors and small vessels from the phase-contrast images. This new imaging approach for hepatic cancer is effective and has potential use in the early detection and classification of hepatic tumors.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of lung cancer is known to improve the chances of successful treatment. However, lungs are soft tissues with complex three-dimensional configuration. Conventional X-ray imaging is based purely on absorption resulting in very low contrast when imaging soft tissues without contrast agents. It is difficult to obtain adequate information of lung lesions from conventional X-ray imaging. METHODS: In this study, a recently emerged imaging technique, in-line X-ray phase contrast imaging (IL-XPCI) was used. This powerful technique enabled high-resolution investigations of soft tissues without contrast agents. We applied IL-XPCI to observe the lungs in an intact mouse for the purpose of defining quantitatively the micro-structures in lung. FINDINGS: The three-dimensional model of the lung was successfully established, which provided an excellent view of lung airways. We highlighted the use of IL-XPCI in the visualization and assessment of alveoli which had rarely been studied in three dimensions (3D). The precise view of individual alveolus was achieved. The morphological parameters, such as diameter and alveolar surface area were measured. These parameters were of great importance in the diagnosis of diseases related to alveolus and alveolar scar. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that IL-XPCI had the ability to represent complex anatomical structures in lung. This offered a new perspective on the diagnosis of respiratory disease and may guide future work in the study of respiratory mechanism on the alveoli level.
