Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 has had a negative and significant impact on global health systems, threatening the necessary blood supply for clinical transfusions. Objective: To describe the causes of rejection of blood donors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out in a population of donors who attended the Blood Bank of Ramiro Prialé Prialé National Hospital, in Huancayo, Peru, from July, 2020 to the same month, 2022. The analyzed variables were sex, the ABO blood group, Rh factor and types and causes of rejection. Results: Of total of 10 177 blood donors, 3390 (33.3%) were differed and excluded; the most frequent cause of differing was the low hematocrit (18.0%) and the most frequent cause of exclusion was antibody to hepatitis B core antigen positivity (36.8%). Likewise, male sex predominated among those who were rejected (55.2%) and an increment of the polytomous tendency was evidenced in differed (R²=0.2214) and excluded donors (R²=0.1178). Conclusions: The prevalence of differing and exclusion in blood donors was relatively high compared to that reported in other studies, which was mainly due, in each respective case, to the low hematocrit and the presence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen. In Cuba there is wide experience in intersectoral work to solve health problems in the community and the management of blood donations is no exception. The objective of this work was to document the intersectoral work in the management of blood donations in Cuba and to provide theoretical elements that contribute to its improvement. A bibliographic review of the literature on intersectoriality and the processes for the management of blood donations in the country was carried out; For this, works published on Internet sites were consulted, as well as texts and other documents available in repositories of the Infomed web portal network. Intersectoriality is theorized and illustrated as a managerial technology and its use and importance applied in the promotion, capture and recruitment of potential donors and in the organization of blood collections. It is concluded that the use of intersectoriality in the health management of voluntary blood donations, strengthens and distinguishes the Cuban Blood Donation Program in relation to the rest of the world, however, it is necessary to improve the strategic alliances between the health sector and other sectors of organized civil society involved in the activities that comprise this process.

Background: several units of blood, from voluntary donors, are discarded due to changes in organoleptic characteristics often caused by the presence of lipemia. Objective: to identify predictors of lipemia in hiperimmune plasma donors, in the provincial Blood Bank of Camagüey, from 2018 to 2021. Methods: a retrospective, case-control, analytic and observational study was performed on donors and the time period defined in the objective. The sample comprised 226 donors, divided into two groups at a 1:1 ratio, one group of cases with those diagnosed with lipemia and another control group without lipemia. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data processing. Results: there was a predominance of plasma donors between 40 and 49 years of age (42 %), males (85 %) and more than five years in the program (42.9 %). The variables: sex, nutritional status, physical inactivity, smoking, triglycerides level, cholesterol level, time in the plasmapheresis program and intensity of donations, showed significant statistical association with the appearance of lipemia. The variables with greater predictive capacity were: nutritional status, smoking, triglycerides level, total cholesterol level and time in the plasmapheresis program . Conclusions: being overweight or obese, smoking, altered triglycerides and total cholesterol levels, and being more than five years in the plasmapheresis program, are predictors of a probable diagnosis of lipemia in plasma donors.

- Abstract
Medicine has had a vertiginous advance in the last two centuries. After the first successful transfusions, transfusional medicine and blood banks arose. The ladder perform vital functions, from donor screening to the studies for the analysis of blood that are carried out before its use for transfusion and the follow-up of patients who receive blood components. Molecular biology is highly relevant in these activities, since it has allowed the reduction of window periods for the detection of diseases transmissible by blood; it has allowed the complete study of the typing of blood groups and HLA molecules, and it has allowed the adequate phenotypic interpretation of patients and donors by being able to have their genotype. The most relevant impact of the implementation of molecular biology techniques was the screening for the detection of transfusion-transmissible diseases in blood donors, which has allowed improving the safety of the components obtained. Molecular biology techniques applied in the study of the donor-recipient have allowed better care of patients who have required a transfusion or transplant. In this work, it is reviewed the importance of molecular biology in blood banks, with which the care for the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social beneficiaries has improved, as well as for the blood donors who are mostly not insured. - Abstract
Background: The mobile campaigns of altruistic blood donation are one of the main actions of the Blood Bank of the Hospital de Especialidades "Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda Gutiérrez". With the arrival of the new normal, after the COVID-19 pandemic, it was necessary to reactivate these actions according to the population's characteristics. Objective: To identify socio-cultural characteristics that enhance or limit voluntary or altruistic blood donation. Material and methods: Qualitative exploratory research, through a semi-structured interview with stratified sampling, universe of partial population of those attending blood donation; only altruistic donors were considered randomly, and representative proportions of the population subgroup were determined. Results: Most of the donors interviewed were preliminary donors who approached the blood donationt tent without focused promotion. Health professionals showed greater identification to altruistic blood donation. Donors declared a lack of donation culture as the main factor limiting this human activity. Finally, they considered the accessibility to the blood donationt tent as determinant for altruistic blood donation. Conclusions: 12 recommendations were established to the Blood Bank, with which the intention is to propose strategies and establish research channels that increase the impact on the promotion of altruistic blood donation in future campaigns.

- Abstract
Objectives: To know and explore from convalescent plasma donators' voices the experience in the blood donation process at a social security hospital. Methods: Qualitative study with a phenomenological design. The investigation was carried out in 01 hospitals of the social security of Peru. Semi-structured interviews were carried out. Results: Eleven donors of convalescent plasma were interviewed. The main motivations for donating were being able to contribute to national research and supporting patients affected by COVID-19. Fears focus on the possible risk of contagion within the hospital. Donors emphasised the attention and support of health personnel alongside the donation procedure. The main expectations and suggestions point towards greater dissemination of donation campaigns with special emphasis on safety. Likewise, an improvement in the time of the donation procedure (from enrolment to the extraction of convalescent plasma), and the implementation of friendly spaces to encourage future blood donation campaigns were highlighted. Conclusions: The experience of the convalescent plasma donors was positive. However, improvements must be made in terms of processes and infrastructure to ensure future successful blood donation campaigns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: viral hepatitis is a health problem world public, being one of the diseases that affect man. Objective: to know the seroprevalence of the surface antigen of the hepatitis B in blood donors. Methods: a study was conducted retrospective in order to determine the seroprevalence of the hepatitis B virus in 93,440 donors, in the Blood Bank Provincial "Renato Guitart Rosell" of Santiago de Cuba. The term studied ranged from October 2015 to May 2016. Results: there was a slight decrease in the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen carriers during the three years studied. The highest reactivity to this marker was in the group aged 41 to 50 years and the male sex predominated. It was found that 0.30% were seropositive for hepatitis B virus. Conclusions: the fulfillment of the established procedures for the adequate selection of the blood donor and the quality and safety of the results in the laboratory determinations of the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen carriers, together with the recruitment of voluntary, altruistic and non-remunerated blood donors, has allowed achieving a low seroprevalence in the Province of Santiago de Cuba. Beckman-Coulter hematology analyzers have used the microcytic anemia factor (Maf®) as a simple and inexpensive screening tool for the early detection of iron deficiency. Objective: To determine the relationship between iron deficiency and Maf® and evaluate the diagnostic performance in the detection of iron deficiency in deferred applicants for blood donation. Methods. Cross-sectional study. We reviewed 159 clinical histories of postulants to donate blood deferred for having hemoglobin values lower than 12.5 g/dL (women) and lower than 13.5 g/dL (men) who attended the Hemotherapy and Blood Bank Service of the Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Lima, Peru. Iron deficiency was defined with ferritin values ≤ 30 ng/mL. Maf® was calculated with data obtained from the blood count using the formula Maf® = [(Hemoglobin x Mean Corpuscular Volume) /100)]. The Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC) with the area under the curve (AUC) was used to predict iron deficiency. Results: 45.5% of female presented iron deficiency. A statistically significant relationship was found between ID and Maf® (p<0.001). The ROC analysis for Maf® and the diagnosis of DH showed an AUC of 0.917 with a cut-off point of 8.97 (sensitivity 90% and specificity 81.2%). Conclusions: A significant association was found between iron deficiency and Maf®.

- Abstract
Background and Objectives: Blood donation is suggested to increase the risk of restless legs syndrome (RLS). This study aims to assess the prevalence of RLS in Spanish blood donors and determined its potential correlation with iron metabolism parameters., Materials and Methods: Prospective cohort study of 129 blood donors (54.3% men, 39.44 years ± 11.0) that underwent a physical examination, blood analysis (hemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin saturation index and soluble transferrin receptor) and a RLS screening questionnaire followed by a prospective follow-up study including a clinical phone interview. A multivariate logistic regression model was performed to examine the association between RLS and other variables., Results: Eighty-four (65.1%) participants were repeat blood donors (mean of 2.11 donations/year) at inclusion and 61 (47.4%) at follow-up (mean of 2.09 donations/year). Non-anemic iron deficiency (ferritin < 50 µg/l) was high in women p < 0.001 and in repeat donors (p = 0.003). The prevalence of RLS was 14.1% at inclusion increasing prospectively (19.5%; p = 0.065). On multivariate analysis, gender was the only variable significantly associated with a RLS diagnosis, being higher in women (OR 5.1; 95% CI 1.71-15.3; p = 0.003)., Conclusions: Despite the high prevalence of non-anemic iron deficiency there was no association between ferritin, transferrin saturation index, soluble transferrin receptor concentration values and RLS diagnosis. Gender was associated with RLS diagnosis regardless of other variables., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024. We aimed to determine the prevalence of infection markers in donors of a Peruvian blood bank and to assess whether donor sociodemographic variables are associated with the presence of these markers. An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in 5942 donors of a blood bank, whose data was collected during 2018. Positivity to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HTLV I-II was determined, in addition to syphilis and Chagas disease. The prevalence of HIV was 0.81%; for HBV it was 6.19%; for HCV, 0.12%; for HTLV I-II, 0.66%; for Chagas disease, 2.76% and for syphilis it was 1.73%. Several sociodemographic factors were associated with infection markers positivity. The predominant donation type was non-voluntary (96%) and 53% had history of previous donation. The prevalence of infection markers for HIV, HBV, Chagas disease and syphilis in blood donors was high compared to other countries in the region.

Objective. To evaluate the screening of blood samples for infectious disease markers at laboratories and blood banks in Latin America per the findings of an External Quality Assessment Program (EQAP). Methods. This qualitative analysis used data from the EQAP coordinated by the Fundação Pro Sangue Hemocentro de São Paulo with the support of the Pan American Health Organization to assess the performance of blood screening for infectious diseases from 2014 to 2018 in Latin America. Each participating laboratory or blood bank received an identical blind panel with 24 blood samples with variable reactivity for all the screening parameters. Panels were processed at each participating facility and results were returned to the Fundação Pro Sangue Hemocentro de São Paulo for individual and joint analyses. Two types of discrepant results were potential failures: false positive results (FPRs) and false nonreactive results (FNRRs). Results. A total of 23 136 samples were evaluated. Global rates of FPR, FNRR, and concordant results were 0.3%, 1.0% and 98.7%, respectively. Seven FNRRs were found for HBsAg (1.0%), 12 for syphilis (2.6%), and 21 for Chagas disease (2.9%). No FNRRs were found for the HIV, HCV, and HTLV viruses. The average accuracy of all the laboratories and blood banks participating in the EQAP during the study period was 99.5% (standard deviation, 0.5%). Conclusion. The findings of this qualitative analysis are positive for blood safety in Latin America, with an average accuracy of 99.5% among the participating laboratories and blood banks.

- Abstract
In order to reach high-quality blood-components, it is necessary that people who wish to be a blood donor shall observe a series of conditions that guarantee the least possible risk for the recipient and themselves. According to international standards, an adequate and reliable supply of safe blood can be assured by a stable base of regular, voluntary, unpaid blood donors (altruistic), which is a goal set by the World Health Organization; unfortunately in our country it only represents around 3%, despite the efforts of different institutions. In addition, the population is unaware of risk factors that prevent donating, due to the low culture of this issue. Therefore, it is necessary to implement strategies to disseminate that blood donation is a privilege and donors must have a lifestyle that allows being in a position to be able to carry out this act of solidarity, including having an excellent state of health, adequate dietary hygiene habits, and a lifestyle free of risky behaviors, which includes the non- use of substances as well as a sexual behavior free from situations of exposure to infectious agents transmitted by transfusion. In particular, this point has been controversial, since some groups of the LGBT community have interpreted it as discrimination. The aim of this article is to highlight the difference between the risk factor, particularly for patients who require blood-components for their treatment and sexual behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge about blood donation among outpatients from a hospital in Bagua Grande. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from May to July 2019. We developed and applied a structured questionnaire. A total of 244 outpatients were recruited through systematic sampling. Participants obtained a mean number of correct answers of 8.90 (SD: 3.25) points out of 21. Age and educational level were found to be correlated with the score (rho = -0.21; p < 0.001 and rho = 0.38; p < 0.001, respectively). Place of origin and occupation affected the score (p < 0.001). We found a low level of knowledge in the studied population, but this would not be related to previous history of donation. Interventions to improve blood donation should not only focus on providing knowledge, since other factors would be more related to this result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2022, 2 years on from the start of the pandemic, the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS, Mexican Institute for Social Security) has been reorganizing its services at full, out of which blood banks play a key role. In addition, on June 14 it is celebrated the World Blood Donor Day by the World Health Organization and this year Mexico was the host country for the celebration. Therefore, it is important to highlight the work carried out in blood banks, ranging from their main activity, which is the recruitment of blood donors and the blood components production, to the different interventions they have in the field of transplantation, diseases emerging diagnosis and the development of new therapeutic modalities, such as, for example, cell therapy. - Abstract
Arboviruses represent a threat to transfusion safety for several reasons: the presence of vectors and the notification of autochthonous cases in our region, the recent increase in the number of cases transmitted through blood and/or blood component transfusion, the high prevalence rates of RNA of the main arboviruses in asymptomatic blood donors, and their ability to survive processing and storage in the different blood components. In an epidemic outbreak caused by an arbovirus in our region, transfusion centres can apply different measures: reactive measures, related to donor selection or arbovirus screening, and proactive measures, such as pathogen inactivation methods. The study of the epidemiology of the main arboviruses and understanding the effectiveness of the different measures that we can adopt are essential to ensure that our blood components remain safe., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: To assess the reproducibility and validity of the scale of perceived quality in donors from a blood bank in the city of Medellín. Methods: Psychometric evaluation in 301 blood donors through internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha and discrimination index. Content validity of the polls and factorial structure were evaluated by means of exploratory factor analysis. Results: Cronbach's alpha was 0.86. For the expectations subscales, 0.87 and in perceptions 0.77. A greater internal consistency was observed in the poll of expectations rather than in that of perceptions. Although low internal consistency was obtained in some dimensions, this does not affect the scale globally. The use of the instrument should be approached in a unidimensional way. Conclusion: The servqual scale presents an adequate psychometric performance and, therefore, is useful to assess the perceived quality of care in blood donors in the Colombian context, as long as it is approached in a unidimensional way.

Abstract: Studies performed on blood units allow the detection of transfusion-transmissible infections (TTI) through the presence of the etiological agent or the antibodies generated by the donor's immune system against infectious agents. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of any TTI in blood donors who attended the Dr. Egidio Montesinos Hospital in the city El Tocuyo during the years 2010-2017. For these 6440 sera were analyzed by the ELISA test of different biotechnology companies, of which 481 cases were reactive to different infections, which gives 7.47% of prevalence to any TTI. The specific results were stratified by TTI, year, sex and origin of the infected donor, obtaining a seroprevalence of 0.66% for HBsAg, for anti-HBc (5.34%), for HCV (0.17%), for infection by Trypanosoma cruzi (0.42%), for infection by Treponema pallidum (0.61%) and for HIV (0.26%). No reactive case was found for HTLV. The population studied can be considered as high risk to transmit HBV given that in this area of influence high figures of their biomarkers are presented with respect to the average of the region, subregion and country.

POLYMERASE chain reaction , *SEROLOGY , *TRYPANOSOMA cruzi , *CHAGAS' disease , *ENZYME-linked immunosorbent assay - Abstract
Introduction: Chagas' disease is the leading cause of infectious myocarditis worldwide. This infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi is usually life-long and asymptomatic; however, the third part of infected people can develop severe or even fatal cardiomyopathy. As the parasitemia in the chronic phase is both low-grade and intermittent, T. cruzi infection is principally detected by serology, although this method has sensitivity and specificity limitations. Objective: To determine the level of agreement between serologic and molecular tests in 658 voluntary blood donors from six provinces in the Colombian department of Santander. Materials and methods: We evaluated an array of diagnostic technologies by cross-section sampling performing a serological double diagnostic test for T. cruzi antibody detection (Chagas III ELISA™, BiosChile Group, and ARCHITECT Chagas CMIA™, Abbott), and DNA detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We collected the demographic, clinical, and epidemiological information of participants. The sample size was calculated using Epidat™ and the statistical analysis was done with Stata 12.1™. Results: PCR was six times more sensitive in detecting T. cruzi infection than ELISA/CMIA with prevalence values of 1.8% (12/658) and 0.3% (2/658), respectively, and kappa=0.28 (95%CI: -0.03 - 0.59). In contrast, serology showed a sensitivity of 16.7% (95%CI: 2.09 - 48.4) and a specificity of 100% (95%CI: 99.4 - 100). All seropositive samples were found to be positive by PCR. Conclusions: The implementation of PCR as a complementary method for screening donors could reduce the probability of false negative and the consequent risk of transfusional-transmission of Chagas' disease, especially in endemic regions. - Abstract
Research objective is to classify seropositive donors according to origin, age, sex and occupation and to determine the prevalence of infection. It was a descriptive, nonexperimental, cross-sectional study. Data recorded from the Donors Book of the Blood Bank of the Red Cross of Guayaquil, during the years 2016-2018, were analyzed. Patient seropositivity was checked for IgG antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi using Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Hemagglutination (HAI) and Indirect Immunofluorescence (IFI). 315 seropositive donors with the highest prevalence for 2017, from the urban area (n = 105; 76.64%) were counted. In rural areas, the highest prevalence was recorded in 2016 (n = 34; 33.33%). The age group most compromised was the range of 18-22 years, corresponding to the male sex (n=68, 21,58%; n= 103, 32,69%; n= 53, 16,68%). The main occupation for 2018 corresponded to students (43.47%). For 2017, household chores (32.35%) and for 2016, elementary occupations (13.82%), such as selling goods on the streets, agriculture, fishing, construction of public works and manufacturing industries. The infection prevalence for 2016, 2017 and 2018 was 0.038%, 0.028% and 0.051% respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Blood donation saves lives, thus blood safety is the most important part of the entire process. Demographic location leads to specific causes of deferral. Living in high Andean areas would produce hematological adaptive changes. It is for this reason that it is important to know the causes of rejection and thus be able to reorient the blood donation promotion programs. Objective: To determine the causes of rejection in blood donors of a hospital in southern Peru at 3825 m.a.s.l. Methods: A cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out on the causes of rejection prior to the donation of possible blood donors from the Hospital III EsSalud; Juliaca. The records of pre-donors that were rejected were analyzed, from January 2014 to December 2018. The data was analyzed in the STATA v. 14 using frequency distribution tables and figures. Results: From the possible selected pre-donors (4,057), 1,699 (41.87%) were women and 2,358 (58.13%) were men. 1458 (41.87%) were deferred, men had the highest rejection rate 882 (60.49%) compared to women 576 (39.51%). Polyerythrocythemia was the most frequent cause of rejection 669 (45.8%). Conclusions: The rejection rate was moderate, with high and low hematocrit being the main causes.

HIV seroconversion , *BLOOD banks , *BLOOD donors , *RATIO & proportion , *ODDS ratio , *ELECTRON donors - Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate the seropositivity of HIV and associated factors in donors of a blood bank in the city of Medellín- Colombia, 2005 - 2018. A cross-sectional study in 166 603 donors of the Blood Bank of the School of Microbiology. Estimates were based proportions and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. The majority of donors were from the Aburrá Valley, 50.2% men, 65.4% altruistic, 59.3% first time and 81.2% received outside the blood bank. The general seropositivity of HIV was 0.275% (95% CI = 0.25-0.30), the specific proportions were 0.324% in men and 0.224% in women; 0.299% in donors with 18-40 years old and 0.212% in the group of 41-6540 years old, and 0.333% in donors of first-time, 0.213% in non-repetitive and 0.149% in repetitive donors. The conclusion was that the seropositivity of the infection was similar in comparison with previous investigations, with a significant decrease since 2013. The risk of infection was statistically higher in men, under 40 years and first-time donors. All this takes is important to know the baseline and evaluate prevention actions in the study population, guide etiological studies, and improve hemovigilance policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
