This research examines how consumers value, over time, their possessions in the domestic space. We focus on the large amount of clothing kept in the household, given the critical issues of sustainability that are raised by this practice. Using in-depth interviews and wardrobe ethnography, we unpack the role of rituals in consumers' valuation of these possessions. The findings show that some possessions become dormant due to various failures in rituals. Dormant possessions are those pending revalorisation, which may be carried out by consumers themselves or through their use of services, specifically those related to circular economy. We identify and theorise reinvestment rituals, a new form of rituals that allow for revalorisation and extension of the life of a possession. This research highlights the value dynamics at play in the consumer – possession relationship and has implications for a strong sustainability approach on the part of consumers, managers, and policymakers. The article introduces the final issue of the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus for 2024. The issue features contributions that challenge established conventions in historical Jesus scholarship. One article presents a fictitious scholarly essay to disrupt students' assumptions about studying ancient history. Another article explores a previously overlooked life of Jesus from the nineteenth century, highlighting the influence of gender on interpretations of Jesus. The issue also includes book reviews, which aim to keep the scholarly conversation going and help scholars stay up-to-date with the latest scholarship. In this paper we introduce the concept of 'domestic colonisation' as a contribution to the literature on critical geographies of home. This provides a lens to focus on the ways in which domestic spaces might be exploited and/or dominated though familiar relationships. With reference to two research projects in North East England, we explore everyday occupations and sieges of home‐spaces by neighbours as a means of reinforcing positions of relative social advantage. We show how these experiences become overwhelming through the intrusion of home‐spaces and (with it) the life worlds of already structurally vulnerable(ised) communities. Domestic colonisation allows us to think through both the damage done through/to the home and connections beyond those spaces. To do this we focus on 'home takeovers' (or 'cuckooing') and 'hate relationships'. Our work on cuckooing shows how the occupation and control of the home by those who re‐produce and seize upon structurally vulnerable(ised) people, is a process which re‐configures the home as an exploitable resource. Understandings of home and intimate social relationships as 'private', combined with complexities regarding culpability, conceal the damage done in contexts of diminished social infrastructure. With reference to our work on hate relationships, we outline how homes are a means of identifying and targeting those who become subjected to a range of hateful acts. This produces everyday spaces of siege and entrapment that control, immobilise and are difficult to escape. Formal interventions are unable to adequately support those victimised through lack of recognition, misrecognition as atomised disputes and a tendency to (re)move those victimised. We end by questioning how we might better address the needs of those subjected to such harms, with an emphasis on the relational production of the home. In pandemic TV, the horror of the home was not only part of the narrative in several shows that depicted pandemic-related plots, but also a result of the tension between the textual and the contextual. As people were feeling trapped indoors, even the most colorful televised living room stood as a symbol of the inability to leave the spatial confines of domesticity. In this paper, I show how pandemic television added an ominous layer to the representation of the home, either directly through narrative means or indirectly through text-versus-meaning dissonance. Intersectionalizing feminist analysis of the domestic space, I argue that texts that attempted to sidestep pandemic-related content often emphasized it even more so, through format and framing, therefore negating the escapism they were trying to achieve. Paulinus of Nola and Shenoute of Atripe were prolific writers and architectural patrons of ascetic communities in the fourth and fifth centuries CE. Despite their rejection of luxury and elite culture, both were responsible for the construction of lavish church complexes at the hearts of those communities, in which architecture and decoration drew on the visual language of the late Roman elite. The churches shared specific architectural features—a triple-apsed (triconch) sanctuary, a rectangular hall terminating in a single apse, and a colonnaded space connecting them—that were also popular in houses and villas at that time. The architectural and spatial language of these churches would have evoked associations with the luxury and status of late Roman society even as these communities rejected those very things. This article considers the implications of the use of elite architecture and the visual language of convivial domestic spaces in these churches created for ascetic communities. This article links Munshi Premchand's identity as the flag-bearer of realism in Hindi prose literature and his beliefs about the sociopolitical aims of literature with his literary practice, particularly the representation of women in his oeuvre. This article argues that Premchand challenges the nationalists' discourse of the Indian woman as the protector of the purity of the "inner" domestic space by replacing women's role of a devoted wife with that of the Indian woman engaged in the project of nation building through her presence in the "outer" public space. It positions that Premchand's resolution of the women's question needs to be understood through his exposition of the disparity between man and woman within the institution of marriage. Premchand challenges the nationalists' narrative by initiating a debate about the condition of women within marital relationship and providing a setting for the questions about their respect, dignity, equality and freedom. The article analyses Premchand's Karambhumi or The Arena (1932) and Godaan or The Gift of Cow (1936) using the analytical framework of Partha Chatterjee's "New Patriarchy". It reveals Premchand's methodology of upsetting the limits set by the nationalists' discourse by problematizing conjugal space as the bearer of woman's primary role and identity. This article exposes the spatial dimensions that children seek to support their alone time needs in the family home, based on empirical data from the At Home with Children research project. Domestic ideals problematise child alone time at home as a threat to family togetherness. In turn, housing foregrounds this idea through the move towards open-plan living and overcrowding policy's indifference to children's 'alone space' needs. This article offers new thinking by exploring the perspectives of children and teenagers on the everyday spatial negotiation of their alone time needs while at home with family during COVID-19 lockdown. Findings from semi-structured interviews with 45 families living across England and Scotland, UK, reveal that both children and teenagers seek spaces for alone time to enable four core experiences: privacy, agency, ownership, and restoration. Here, associated dimensions of space are identified by children and teenagers, contributing new understandings to children's domestic geographies and showing the relevance of space for alone time, to children's well-being, fundamentally challenging adult-centred constructions of family togetherness. The article's focus on the voiced needs of children sets a new agenda for the housing standards, with major policy implications for measures of occupation density, which can enable children's well-being. The present study investigates the incorporation of renewable rooftop photovoltaic systems in fully electrified residential buildings and estimates the zero-energy demand building potential in relation to the climatic data of Greece. Specifically, the aim of the analysis is to calculate the maximum possible number of stories and therefore the total building height for a complete transformation to zero-net-energy building. The energy analysis, which is conducted using the DesignBuilder software, focuses on single-floor up to seven-story buildings. The importance of the present work lies in the acknowledgment of the diversity of the Greek residential sector, the adherence to national energy policies, and the European goal of fully electrified buildings. The examined case studies are equipped with electrically driven air-to-air heat pumps serving the space heating and cooling demands and with an air-to-water heat pump covering the domestic hot water requirements. The investigated locations are the four main cities of Greece, Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania, and Kastoria, which represent the country's four climatic categories. The conducted analysis allows for the mapping of the zero-energy building potential for the climatic data of Greece, demonstrating the possibility of striking a positive building energy balance through the integration of on-site renewable energy sources and the production of necessary electrical energy. The novelty of the present work lies in the identification of a key factor, namely, the building height, which determines the feasibility of transforming multifamily buildings into zero-energy buildings. According to the analysis results, the critical number of stories is calculated at six for Chania, five for Athens, four for Thessaloniki, and two for Kastoria. Regarding a three-story residential building, the incorporation of a renewable photovoltaic system can result in an annual surplus electricity production of 13,741 kWh (Chania), 10,424 kWh (Athens), and 6931 kWh (Thessaloniki), and a corresponding coverage of 100% (Chania), 69.0% (Athens), 38.9% (Thessaloniki) and 0% (Kastoria). Safranbolu, located in the Western Black Sea region of northern Turkey, consists of three historical settlements distinguished by monumental buildings and especially traditional houses. For this reason, the city was declared a 'World Heritage Site' by UNESCO in 1994. Traditional Safranbolu houses are examples of Turkish houses built with mixed techniques. In research on Turkish residences and traditional Safranbolu houses, the focus has been on the origin of dwelling construction culture, the spatial reading of the parts of the house, the sociocultural life of the owners, and the surveying of traditional construction techniques. In this study, the design principles affecting the spatial arrangement of Safranbolu houses were evaluated from a holistic perspective. Dwellings selected from Safranbolu sites were analyzed at the urban scale according to the environmental design data of the residential area. It can be seen that houses were designed in a certain order according to these factors. In the building scale analyses, the diversity in the domestic space configuration was surveyed by the drawings of immediate environments at the plans and sections of the houses. Criticism in early modern English drama continues to expose the socio‐spatial anxieties generated by plague that shaped both plays and the playhouse space. What has not yet been considered in any detail, however, are the numerous public health measures born out of these anxieties that altered the lived experience of space during outbreaks. This article begins to address this lacuna by reading Thomas Heywood's domestic tragedy A Woman Killed with Kindness through the lens of contemporary plague prevention. Plague policy repurposed the home into a space that might not only contain the infected but, with competent governance, might also provide the first line of defence against infection. Woman Killed, a play that likely premiered in the wake of an outbreak, is vigorously alert to the dynamics of plague‐time domestic space and the onus placed on householders to cleanse and manage the home and its peripheries. This article examines how Heywood draws on plague prevention practices to introduce and remove ‘infectious’ sources to and from the Frankford home. Heywood utilizes the cultural immediacy of plague measures to expose and explore the dangers of female adultery that, like plague, threatened the integrity and autonomy of domestic space. Drawing on feminist technology studies’ interventions in current research on smart homes, this article offers an analysis of recent cultural artifacts that – in contrast to the predominant marketized narratives infused with androcentricity and biased toward a reaffirmation of stereotypical gender roles – dislocate the conventional power relations within the technologized domestic space. The article elaborates an original concept of a ‘wicked vestal’, which may serve as a heuristic tool to capture the revisionist dynamics operating within (and partly enabled by) the technology-imbued home. The article argues, that creative subversions of the mainstream discourse on smartification offered by literary/artistic/cinematic products may add nuance to the existent discussions on smart technologies, offering a glimpse into the processes of a (dis)harmonious integration of technology and domesticity, alerting consumers of smart devices to, and possibly readying them for, the precariousness lurking in an unpredictable, capitalism-ridden techno-future. This paper advances debates at the intersection of geographies of children, youth and families, digital geographies, and geographies of home. We argue that social, seasonal and limited time are vitally important for understanding the new landscape between gaming and gambling and have wider analytical purchase for geographers. This paper reveals parenting practices connected to the multi-billion-dollar industry of paid-for currency in digital games used to access gambling style systems and chance-based mechanisms such as loot boxes. We use this timely example to develop new digital geographies of home from original interviews with families based in England on their everyday lived experiences of gambling-style systems in digital games as well as data from video ethnographies with children and young people and interviews with international game designers. This paper challenges current understandings by examining how parents make sense of gambling-related harms and demonstrates the spatial and temporal dynamics of purchasing decisions, rules, and associated conflicts in domestic space. We argue these systems in digital games shape and are shaped by family geographies. This paper concludes by outlining its relevance for the social and health sciences at a time of intense legislative interest in the increasingly blurred space between gaming and gambling. Using scrapbooks created by members of the Women's Institute in England in 1965, this article offers a rare insight into women's lived experience and interaction with new technologies and services, in domestic and communal spaces, which show how rural women diligently recorded the new behaviors, emotions, and challenges surrounding rural life. Scrapbookers show multiple and sometimes contradictory attitudes, representing themselves as modern housewives proficient with new consumer durables, while also critiquing the inequalities heralded by new goods and services. Rural women were not simply bystanders to technological change but represented themselves as both consumers and producers of new forms of knowledge, through their use of material culture. Scrapbookers used their creations to archive the emotional labor they performed in their homes and communities, illuminating an important but often overlooked component of consumption. As bats adapt to anthropogenic environmental change they increasingly interact with humans and inhabit human infrastructure. This article addresses the challenge of learning to live with synanthropic bats. Building on ideas from multispecies studies, we explore the practices and accommodations that coproduce meaningful human-bat cohabitation in domestic space. Drawing on qualitative research conducted in the Netherlands, we find that domestic space is remade in small but significant ways in response to bats. The aim of our interviewees is to ensure minimal interference between human and bat domestic geographies: intimacy can be spatialized at the domestic scale but is best done in ways that maintain degrees of tolerance. Rather than help bats in general, much care-work centres around supporting the inter-generational reproductive work of bats.This sequential sense of ethical time certainly shifts conservation from a done to mode, and recasts home-dwellers as participants in the story of bat survival and intergenerational nourishment. The linear compressor is one of the main energy-consuming components in domestic and space refrigeration systems. Due to the asymmetric leakage in the clearance, the piston offset unavoidably causes the piston to deviate from its designed equilibrium position and worsens the compressor performance. In this paper, a new method is proposed to inhibit the piston offset. A biased center port is employed to direct gas from the back chamber to the front at the position close to the back chamber to balance the pressure on the two sides of the piston. To verify this method, a numerical simulation was performed to calculate the mass flow through the clearance and center port channel, and the average pressure difference across the piston. An experimental bench was established to compare the offset of the structures with no center port, unbiased center port and biased center port. Results show that the biased center port can almost eliminate the piston offset at the designed operating condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the Data Domotopia a 2300 + respondent self-administered web-based survey. It includes 100 + multi-purpose items about home-making and stillness in a moving world. We suppose that home-making can reveal coping strategies and resilience practices to make everyday life work – as home is a central location in people's activity-travel patterns. To describe this phenomenon, the concept of Domotopia is introduced, defining how people arrange, use, and experience their homes to cope with the pathologies of accelerated and liquid modernity (Bauman 2005). While the Data Domotopia is based on a mixed-method combining qualitative and quantitative material, this paper focuses mainly on the description of the questionnaire – which is organized into three interrelated layers: the dwelling, the dwellers, and the neighborhood. Each of these layers unfolds in functional, social, emotional and sensory components. The survey covers most of the contemporary issues related to home-making. This includes the domestic space and gender issues; the socio-spatial resources (mobility, action space, core, and wider social network); lifestyles, ideals, and residential aspiration; time pressures, time use, organization and stress; equipment, rules and arrangements; interpersonal relations, cohabitation and negotiation, dominance and power. Intakes on the Data Domotopia is given by two concrete cases about the time-space coverage of the habitual action space, and about inter-personal task allocation. These examples show the potential of the data to study domocentric stillness and resilience to urban pathologies. This work is the result of a recent visit to the Hill House designed by architect Rennie Mackintosh in Helensburgh, Scotland. Looking around the house evokes memories, ideas, and associations with other houses, other times, and other places. The work displays a way of inhabiting in which certain archetypal human behaviors also seem to find archetypal responses in the architecture of the house, which are paradigmatic spatial manifestations that still guide domestic projects today. From the ancient Hedingham Castle in Essex, England, to the small apartment designed by Christian Pottgiesser in Paris, the itinerary not only includes the Hill House’s rooms, but also other works of architecture, cinema, and painting that converge on the same way of living, feeling, and creating the domestic space. Through this itinerary, a historical argumentative path of spatial transformations is discovered, which could provisionally explain the persistence of certain domestic spatial types in contemporary architecture while also recalling its most remote and forgotten origins.

AbstractDuring the last four decades, communities in the city of Buenaventura, Colombia’s main seaport, have mobilized in order to access public water services. Privatization, poor infrastructural maintenance, and intermittence have made access to water a matter of concern. In this context, the Committee for the Defense of Water and Life came into being in 2014, as an urban grassroots organization, making calls on the city’s population to mobilize for their right to clean water. In this article, however, we argue that the acts of defending water are not limited to the realm of collective action and overt activism against national and local governmental decisions. Rather, defending water in places such as Buenaventura is also an everyday gendered practice where water is secured and protected against other beings such as microbes and/or mosquitoes. Drawing on collaborative work, we document how women protect water in less visible scenarios such as the home. These women engage in a repertoire of domestic activities and techniques in order to obtain, store and keep water clean, as stored (and therefore stagnant) waters are never only water but are also home to large and threatening communities of organisms such as microbes and mosquitoes on their water stages. We bring political ecology indoors to reflect on how gendered domestic spaces become a dynamic and crucial ecological and political arena for the defense of water and life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The photo-elicitation method can provide rich insights into home-making – the process whereby residents use, modify and personalize domestic space. However, previous studies have prioritized the words of participants, gathered in follow-up interviews, over photographs themselves. This paper presents an alternative methodological approach. Specifically, we approach photographs as primary sources, with a focus on their composition. First, we demonstrate how formal elements of photographs can be identified, and their meanings analysed. We show that domestic photographs speak to people's relationships with their homes, and identify empirical insights into scale, light and absences. Second, we combine data from follow-up interviews with formal analysis of images to confirm these insights, and generate additional findings – e.g., regarding the negotiation of domestic architecture and the meanings of possessions. We conclude that photo-elicitation studies of home-making benefit from both visual and narrative insights into participants' homes, and that both types of data merit serious analysis. This article analyses the performance of homemaking and religious practices of six Turkish Muslim women who made hicret (migration) to Brazil, focusing on the domestic space of their shared apartment. Their reasons to migrate combine personal motivations and a sense of responsibility to spread the world view of the Turkish Islamic movement of which they are participants. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, I explore their everyday practices in the production of an ideal Muslim self and the making of a home in order to understand the effects of the community's domesticities on their individual trajectories. The analysis shows that the performance of those everyday practices produces a moral and affective bond to the movement and its religious leader, conditioning home to a specific spatial and moral structure. The interior spaces we inhabit every day are defined by a system of cultural and symbolic references manifest in surfaces, objects, furniture, and art pieces that colonize and design our everyday spaces. For this research, the author aims to develop a theory concerning the shaping of interior space by the surface, informed by domestic interiors published in the magazine Domus during Gio Ponti's second tenure as editor-in-chief (1948–1978). Domus helped to build a design culture in Italy and Europe by publishing domestic interiors understood as a field where the efforts of artists, architects, and designers coalesced, and the room became the place where disciplinary specificities dissolved. This study leverages visual design processes to construct a conceptual representation of domestic spaces. Drawing upon personal growth experiences, this work aims to foster reflection on family culture and elicit a fresh perspective on representations of family and home. The design manifests as a 3D installation piece, integrating geometric and organic forms in a novel synthesis of visual communication design. Mixed technique methodologies underscore the artwork's versatility, capturing the complexity and breadth of home as a concept. The creation process incorporated data from environmental conditions, relevant academic literature, and visual art influences. Analysis centered on the clarity of the theme, the symbolic form of the work, and the creative techniques employed, revealing an in-depth exploration of graphic design, interface design, and illustration principles. This study highlights housing as an elemental component of human life, serving as the nexus for sustenance, shelter, and travel. The artwork--an assembly of acrylic panels shaped into simple, uncluttered forms and decorated with paper-cut patterns--translates this concept into a tangible visual reality. It reflects the influential role of visual arts and graphic design in societal narratives. Light within the artwork, symbolizing warmth, creates a space imbued with love, joy, music, and laughter. The piece thus encapsulates a shared understanding of home, underlining the capacity of visual design to create universally resonant yet individually unique experiences. In conclusion, this work underscores the educational and societal significance of visual design, encouraging further exploration into home-themed art and its capacity to bolster societal stability and unity. It advances understanding of the aesthetics of home - its shape, color, and the interplay between Chinese paper-cut patterns and the home concept. To maximize the sustainable and economic benefits of collective heating systems, proper sizing is fundamental. This paper presents the validation of a novel sizing approach for collective systems producing and distributing heat for both space heating and domestic hot water, utilizing residential heat meter data. A validation methodology is developed to overcome the limitations of this type of data to identify the peak heat demand and estimate the peak heat demand under design outdoor conditions. The latter is estimated utilizing multiple linear regression coupled with an analysis of the maximum deviations. The power-storage characteristic, which shows all combinations of thermal power and thermal storage to meet the peak heat demand is determined and used to validate the novel sizing approach for six case studies. This article establishes a relationship between Thom Gunn’s experience of queer domestic space and his use of poetic form through a close analysis of ‘Jack Straw’s Castle’. Drawing on queer historical scholarship, I outline the context of queer communal dwelling in the United States that led to Gunn’s Cole Street residence. Through a close reading of his letters, I set out the ways in which Gunn was invested in remodelling the heteronormative household model. Drawing on literary spatial theorists such as Bachelard, I argue that the form of ‘Jack Straw’s Castle’ is answerable to the domestic space in which it was written. This article discusses the sonic and spatial configurations of the Spiritualist séance as a speculative antecedent to the presence of disembodied voices, such as Amazon's Alexa, in contemporary homes. I examine archival notes, photographs and audio recordings in order to unpack how séances curated domestic spaces in order to display and interrogate unseen agents. Further, I consider the presentation of the sound installation The Dark Age of Connectionism: Captivity (2017) by Wesley Goatley at IMPAKT festival, curated by the curatorial collective Haunted Machines, as a case study that demonstrates how the exhibition framework articulated in the séance room might be applied as critical strategy in gallery spaces. Oral history, when combined with other disciplines like Sociology, Architecture, Anthropology, and Photography, can uncover often-neglected elements of our past leading to breakthroughs in preservation projects. Oral history works with other disciplines (i.e. photography and studies of domestic space) to help us understand the layers of memory and history. This article aims to demonstrate how a methodological approach can coalesce three different disciplines--photography, oral history, and domestic space--to provide a unique, more intimate narrative of the use of the domestic spaces of historically unknown individuals in the 1950s. Usually, architectural historians present information visually through drawings, photographs, books, and other forms of written sources. Rarely do architectural historians use oral narratives in their works. For this reason, readers who have not really considered architectural and oral history within the same context will be interested to learn about this cross-disciplinary approach. Using a case study of one family's personal photo albums, their elicite memories, and their house, this article employs what I have termed a tripod methodology to examine the century-old home of the Eaton Family, long-time residents of the historic Duck Pond community in Gainesville, Florida. Although this paper features only one model, the tripod approach can go in many directions as needed for future research areas like preservation, historical, and anthropological studies, etc. This study serves as an example of how this methodology helps us better understand the 1950s and 60s domestic life in Florida by closely examining one historic home--the Eaton House. Abstract Instances of crisis have always marked pivotal moments in housing design, acting as catalysts for re-evaluating models and practices and bringing forth systemic changes already latent in the discipline. Such revelation of hidden latencies is a characteristic phenomenon of today's housing panorama, influenced by factors such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the imperative shift toward ecological sustainability, and a growing discourse prompting the reconsideration of the human body at both individual and social levels. This article delves into such a system of adjustments within the contextualised case of Spanish social housing. It does so by focusing on two complementary sources. Firstly, recent shifts in housing policies, encompassing new regulations, programs, legal frameworks, and urban strategies; and secondly, a selection of projects emerging from competitions and new developments that either anticipate or result from these policy changes, introducing innovative design devices working on the following fronts: (1) the presence of nature and open space, interpreted as a fundamental element for social comfort related with broader ecological concerns, (2) a heterogeneous and complex articulation of in-between collective spaces, responding to emerging trends around the concept of sharing, and (3) the reconceptualization of the traditional core of interior private space, namely the kitchen, which in turn raises important questions on gender equality and care. Analysing the ever-evolving interplay between policies and practices, theories and projects, will reveal that the multifaceted crises of recent decades have played a pivotal role in shaping a redefined understanding of domestic spaces. Most significantly, this reinterpretation goes beyond addressing environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, placing a great emphasis on social innovation within and beyond the home, inside and outside the building.

The text examines domestic space and the relationships that characterize it through an attempt to interpret them as a social infrastructure. Thinking of the home as infrastructure also means expanding the conception of what constitutes an infrastructure and reflecting on the relationship between politics and intimacy to question the boundaries between public and private. Moreover, observing the home through the infrastructural dimension allows for placing reproductive labor at the center, not only as work but also as a central element for social infrastructure.

This dossier explores the ways in which theatre and performance practitioners across the globe have addressed the deeply gendered modes of differential access to public spaces, institutional support, and resources through their creative as well as activist work, during the pandemic and its aftermath. In the last three years, the pandemic has transformed experiences of urban space globally. Access to public space has always been gendered as well as shaped by geographical location, race, caste, class and sexual identity. These traditional modes of differential access have been radically reorganized by the isolation and uncertainty engendered by the global pandemic. While 'working from home' was certainly not an option for everyone (most notably, care-workers in an overwhelmingly feminized profession), confinement to domestic space also meant escalating incidents of gendered violence for others. Additionally, the lack of sustainable income opportunities meant, as contributions to this dossier will demonstrate, the stripping away of roofs from over the heads of vulnerable citizens, whether impoverished artistes in want of state support or migrant workers on an uncertain daily wage. Staying at home was no longer an option, because 'home' often ceased to exist as a viable shelter, whether literally or by implication. For performers and theatre-workers all over the world, it was a time of intensified precarity: not only a loss of employment and income, but also a growing sense of artistic and professional purposelessness. While some were able to reorient this bewilderment through virtual and digital performances, for many grassroots performers, especially in the global South, access to these modes of public engagement were limited. In countries like India, street theatre activists felt unable and unwilling to switch to the digital space, while the prohibition on public assembly struck an irrevocable blow to women's protest movements. This article presents a methodology that combines methods of architectural representation with qualitative social science research to study housing, particularly, home-based work. Studies of home-based work have specialised in discussing the complexities of sharing the domestic and productive spaces. However, the literature shows that there is a methodological gap in approaching these complexities. Specifically, both social science and architectural techniques separately fail to represent the relationships and conflicts between these two spheres. This article addresses the following question: how to achieve a representation that corresponds to the complexity of the relationship between domestic and productive space in dwellings? To answer this question, our methodology combines the techniques of architecture (sketches, plans, maquettes and axonometries) and social science (observation, interviews and focus groups) to capture the relationship between domestic (reproductive) and work (productive) spaces in households. The method presents three scales of analysis: the micro (household), the meso (part of the neighbourhood) and the macro (neighbourhood). These different scales of analysis were applied in two case studies to test the performance of the method. These are the transitional emergency neighbourhoods built after the 2015 floods in Atacama (Chile). These cases were selected because, for many families, housing is also a place of income generation, and often emergency housing is a place of work, contributing to the economic recovery process after a disaster. A study by dynamic simulation using the TRNSYS software was carried out to visualize the performance of a solar water heater with forced circulation for one year. Thermal needs in domestic hot water for an average family of six people living in the city of Oran in Algeria are covered by solar energy by up to 63%. Parameters such as the angle of inclination, the surface of the solar panel, the storage volume, the heat exchanger's surface, and the flow rate of the solar loop have been optimized. An analysis of the temperature stratification inside the balloon was presented, along with the calculation of charging and discharging efficiency. Simultaneous use of domestic spaces by humans and wildlife is little understood, despite global ubiquity, and can create an interface for human exposure to wildlife pathogens. Bats are a pervasive synanthropic taxon and are associated with several pathogens that can spill over and cause disease in humans. Urbanization has destroyed much natural bat habitat and, in response, many species increasingly use buildings as roosts. The purpose of this study was to characterize human interactions with bats in shared buildings to assess potential for human exposure to and spillover of bat-borne pathogens. We surveyed 102 people living and working in buildings used as bat roosts in Taita-Taveta county, Kenya between 2021 and 2023. We characterized and quantified the duration, intensity, and frequency of human-bat interactions occurring in this common domestic setting. Survey respondents reported living with bats in buildings year-round, with cohabitation occurring consistently for at least 10 years in 38% of cases. Human contact with bats occurred primarily through direct and indirect routes, including exposure to excrement (90% of respondents), and direct touching of bats (39% of respondents). Indirect contacts most often occurred daily, and direct contacts most often occurred yearly. Domestic animal consumption of bats was also reported (16% of respondents). We demonstrate that shared building use by bats and humans in rural Kenya leads to prolonged, frequent, and sometimes intense interactions between bats and humans, consistent with interfaces that can facilitate exposure to bat pathogens and subsequent spillover. Identifying and understanding the settings and practices that may lead to zoonotic pathogen spillover is of great global importance for developing countermeasures, and this study establishes bat roosts in buildings as such a setting. Bat use of buildings, which serve as roosts where they raise young and sleep, is increasing globally with the loss of natural habitat. In such settings, interactions between bats, people, and domestic animals may occur. This may be cause for concern as bats can carry pathogens that infect people or domestic animals and interactions with bats may create opportunities for exposure to these pathogens. Until now, the characteristics of human-bat interactions in buildings, and their potential for exposing humans and domestic animals to bat-borne parasites, were unknown. In our study, people living and working in buildings used simultaneously by bats reported frequent interactions with bats and their feces, which can facilitate human exposure to bat pathogens. These interactions happened frequently and over many years. We demonstrate that shared building use by bats and people in rural Kenya leads to prolonged, frequent, and sometimes intense interactions between bats, humans, and domestic animals, consistent with exposure opportunities that can lead to pathogen spillover. The UK government tentatively plans to use hydrogen for domestic applications by 2035. While the use of hydrogen aims to reduce the dependence on hydrocarbons, certain factors need consideration. Since hydrogen is much lighter, and more reactive than methane, it is crucial to understand the change in risk for accident scenarios involving hydrogen in a domestic setting. Numerical modelling was used to simulate the leakage of hydrogen and methane in small, enclosed spaces such as kitchen cupboards. The k- ε turbulence model was used along with the species transport model to simulate the leakage of gas for different inlet locations and leak diameters (1.8 mm–7.2 mm). From the modelling study, it was observed that hydrogen and methane both tend to stratify from top of the control volume to the bottom. The key finding was that, under adverse conditions (leak from a 7.2 mm diameter hole) and due to greater volumetric flow, hydrogen tends to reach equilibrium concentration 45s faster than methane for a total leak duration of 600s. Additionally, it was noted that cases with leak inlet locations near corners had 28% lower hydrogen concentrations, and 25% lower methane concentrations as compared to leak inlet locations near the centre of the cupboard. • Hydrogen has the potential to be used as fuel for domestic applications. • Hydrogen and Methane leakages were visualised using k-ε model and species transport model. • Hydrogen leak from a 7.2 mm hole reached maximum concentration 45–300s faster than a 2.5 mm hole. • Hydrogen concentration in the idealised cupboard reached up to 25% in air compared to methane concentration in air (10%). The home is an ever-changing assemblage of technologies that shapes the organisation and division of housework and supports certain models of what that work entails, who does it and for what purposes. This paper analyses core tensions arising through the ways smart homes are embedding logics of digital capitalism into home life and labour. As a critical way of understanding these techno-political shifts in the means of social reproduction, we advance the concept of Big Mother – a system that, under the guise of maternal care, seeks to manage, monitor and marketise domestic spaces and practices. We identify three tensions arising in the relationships between care and control as they are mediated through the Big Mother system: (a) outsourcing autonomy through enhanced control and choice, (b) increased monitoring for efficient management and (c) revaluation of care through optimisation of housework. For each area, we explore how emerging technological capacities promise to enhance our abilities to care for our homes, families and selves. Yet, at the same time, these innovations also empower Big Mother to enrol people into new techniques of surveillance, new forms of automation and new markets of data. Our purpose in this paper is to push back against the influential ideas of smart homes based on luxury surveillance and caring systems by showing that they exist in constant relation with a supposedly antithetical version of the smart home represented by Big Mother. This article traces the change in practice and the transition of meaning in the photographs taken in Jewish homes in Germany under the Nazi regime. It draws on the ontological duality of absence and presence embedded in the medium of photography to analyze examples of such photographs selected from numerous archival and private collections, discerning a move away from the practice of interior photography as a tool of social affirmation in the late Weimar Republic toward its attestation of absence and loss shortly before emigration from Germany. Employing the Freudian term uncanny in its original spatial connotation as "unhomely," the analysis contextualizes the latent presence of the inhabitants in images of vacant interiors through a discussion of the historical change in the domestic life of Jews in the face of the increasing Nazification of the public space. Focusing on the commemorative and mnemonic function of the photos, the article concludes by addressing their constitutive role in personal narratives as a private lieu de mémoire and as the generator of future postmemories. Housing has long been the quintessential rentier asset. But under financialized capitalism its enrolment into accumulation dynamics has greatly intensified. As investors increasingly turn to residential real estate in search of corporate rents, the logic of assetization is reaching novel locations in the housing process – extending to new scales, metrics and micro-morphologies. This paper argues one such novel location is that most intimate and familiar of places: the bed. Bringing together constructivist and political economy approaches to assets and drawing on the empirical case of co-living, the bed is identified as both a technical tool for projecting and enhancing income from real estate, and a strategy for de-risking investments by hyper-focusing on the necessities of life. Reducing domestic space to a technology for bare repose, bed-as-asset offers key insights into how the rhythms of housing are being harmonized with the needs of investors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jorge Luis Borges confessed, on more than one occasion, that his modest blindness was not the dramatic darkness that common sense believes but rather a refuge that, in his case, was built in a slow twilight. At the end of his speech to receive the Honoris Causa degree from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Chile, the Argentine writer spoke about the gradual parting of his sight and the pleasant sensation of entering a new, richer, deeper, and more creative living space. Relying on blindness as an introspective landscape, as a habitable space where fantasy meets realism, it is in this context that the essay proposes to inhabit, with thought, a weightless and infinite domestic space. Other artists achieved it - Groussac, Monet, Homer, Joyce, Herzog, Pallasmaa, and Italo Calvino - turning this kind of induced blindness into an intimate and creative room in which to settle at the end of their lives. Professor Yeager introduces this story, making us ascend to the heavens in search of an inspiring, black, and profound space. The house dreamed by Manuel Parra and Danilo Veras leads us away from the light to discover ourselves in a unique sensory experience. From the hand of the master Lewerentz, this essay will bring together some architectural experimentations with a singular dark box, an asphalt and black environment: black box in Lund. Living in blindness suggests a revision of our perceptual field, imaginatively inhabiting these introspective places where laws seem to have disappeared. This article theorizes the home as a site where women rearticulate racialized narratives of neighborhood and nation. I focus on Black women who operate their homes as accommodations within South African township tourism. In post-apartheid cities, Black townships remain segregated and stigmatized by underdevelopment. Drawing upon fourteen months of fieldwork in Cape Town, I illustrate how hostesses communicated visions for modernization through their displays of household consumption. Women's homes interrupted the dominant imagery of stagnant township poverty but did so in different ways for international and domestic audiences. Hostesses who targeted white Westerners drew upon colonial icons of African tradition and framed Black townships as respectable suburbs rooted in ethnic heritage. In contrast, hostesses who catered to Black South Africans tapped into Black postcolonial aspirations by appropriating signs of Western luxury to portray Black townships as world-class destinations. Comparing these two sectors reveals how hostesses reframed Black place through gendered ideals in relation to racial and class hierarchies within and among nations. Taken together, they demonstrate how women's jurisdiction over domestic space enables them to produce transnational narratives of place. This paper addresses the potential for using childhood memories shared on social media as a means of interrogating experiences of twentieth-century social historical geographies of home and family life. In so doing, the paper discusses briefly the value of children's perceptions as guests in others' homes as an insightful source of data, before exploring the value of social media as a place for sharing these recollections and accessing them as a researcher. The paper draws data from a thread on the popular UK-based parenting website and internet discussion space, 'Mumsnet', asking contributors to share the 'weirdest' thing they saw at someone else's house when they were a child. This paper positions social media research as an ethically, epistemologically and ontologically sound approach to creating data for geographical research, which has become well-established in other sub-disciplines. The paper seeks to explore what it is to remember intimate childhood experience alongside those whose memories might reflect or conflict with your own. Further, the paper addresses the way in which a social media thread created new narratives and uncovered long-buried memories which provide an insightful lens for exploring a particular domestic historical geography.
