The question of whether cognitive control is specific to certain domains or domain-general remains an extensively debated question at both cognitive and neural levels. This study examined the neural substrates associated with resistance to interference (RI) in phonological, semantic, and visual domains by using strictly matched tasks and determining the domain-general or domain-specific manner in which aging affects the neural substrates associated with RI. In an fMRI experiment, young and older participants performed a similarity judgment task with phonological, semantic, or visual interference buildup. For both age groups, domain-specific RI effects were observed at the univariate level, with increased involvement in the phonological domain of the right angular gyrus and the right lingual gyrus, in the semantic domain of the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, the bilateral superior parietal and angular gyri and the left middle temporal gyrus, and in the visual domain of the middle/superior frontal gyri and occipital gyri. At the multivariate level, although RI effects could be decoded from neural patterns in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus for all domains and age groups, between-domain prediction of RI conditions was associated with Bayesian evidence for the null hypothesis. There is ongoing debate about whether control‐related processing related to cognitive conflict and emotional conflict operate independently. This study manipulated the proportion of congruent to incongruent trials to determine the domain specificity or generality of these two types of conflict control. Two experiments were conducted in which spatial Simon conflict was combined with emotional face‐word conflict. In Experiment 1, the proportion congruency (PC) of spatial conflict was manipulated, and in Experiment 2, the PC of emotional conflict was manipulated. The aim was to determine whether control‐related processes elicited by cognitive or emotional conflict show domain‐specific (within cognitive or within emotional control‐related effects) or domain‐general effects, where control elicited by cognitive conflict benefits emotional control processes and vice versa. Behavioral findings indicated that spatial and emotional conflict exhibited within‐domain PC effects. For event‐related brain potential (ERP) activity, PC effects were primarily reflected in a late slow potential, rather than an early negativity, suggesting that control‐related adjustments impacted conflict resolution rather than conflict detection. Furthermore, the results did not show evidence of PC effects across domains for behavioral or ERP data, indicating that proactive control elicited by PC manipulation does not transfer across cognitive and emotional conflict. This study supports the modular nature of proactive control for processes related to cognitive and emotional control. This study explores whether cognitive and emotional conflict control operates independently by manipulating congruency proportions. Results suggest domain‐specific effects, with spatial and emotional conflicts showing within‐domain congruency effects. Findings indicate that proactive control does not transfer across cognitive and emotional conflict. In creativity research it is often claimed that creativity pertains to persons and products as well as processes. However, most studies have focused on the creative potential of persons and their creative products in detriment of looking at the creative process itself or investigating all three facets of creativity in the same study. In this article, we report on a study that investigated children's creative potential, iterations in their creative process, and the effects of these factors on their creative products. Twenty-seven children aged 10–12 participated in a LEGO building task and were asked to build creative products in a five-step iterative process (for a total of 135 creative products). Children's creative potential was then assessed with an Alternative Uses Task. Finally, children's creative products were evaluated by six expert raters using a Consensual Assessment Technique. Results revealed statistically significant effects of iterations in the creative process on children's creative products. Specifically, iterations significantly increased originality but decreased task-appropriateness of the creative products. These results suggest that, in children, iterations in creative processes might facilitate exploration but inhibit exploitation. We found no statistically significant effects of children's creative potential on their creative products, supporting domain specificity in creativity. These findings represent some of the first empirical evidence showcasing the effects of iteration on originality and appropriateness in children's creative products, emphasizing the importance of investigating creative processes in children. What is it that develops in adult life? Development through work and family life have been documented and theorised in detail, but much less is known about what is learned beyond these domains, through people's engagements in hobbies or when out of work (e.g., unemployed, retired). We argue that adult development can be addressed in general terms, beyond domain specificity; drawing on our sociocultural psychology framework, and assuming an open-system perspective, we highlight the two processes of progressive differentiation and psychological distancing in diverse domains of activity. To address development over time, we explore 20 years of people's lives through the longitudinal analysis of online diaries. A combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis enables us to identify people's experiences of rupture and transitions, the diversity of their domains of interests, and how these change over time. Based on a case-study, we show that, if the general direction of development does entail progressive differentiation and distanciation, these processes can also be hindered by the cumulation of vulnerabilising events. Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive process that enables animals to selectively focus on specific regions of the visual field while filtering out irrelevant information. However, given the domain specificity of social behaviors, it remains unclear whether attention to faces versus nonfaces recruits different neurocognitive processes. In this study, we simultaneously recorded activity from temporal and frontal nodes of the attention network whilemacaques performed a goal-directed visual search task. V4 and inferotemporal (IT) visual category-selective units, selected during cue presentation, discriminated fixations on targets and distractors during the search but were differentially engaged by face and house targets. V4 and IT category-selective units also encoded fixation transitions and search dynamics. Comparedwith distractors, fixations on targets reduced spike--LFP coherence within the temporal cortex. Importantly, targetinduced desynchronization between the temporal and prefrontal cortices was only evident for face targets, suggesting that attention to faces differentially engaged the prefrontal cortex. We further revealed bidirectional theta influence between the temporal and prefrontal cortices using Granger causality, which was again disproportionate for faces. Finally, we showed that the search became more efficient with increasing target-induced desynchronization. Successful communication requires speakers and listeners to refer to information in their common ground. Shared history is one of the bases for common ground, as information from a communicative episode in the past can be referred to in future communication. However, to draw upon shared history, communicative partners need to have an accurate memory record that they can refer to. The memory mechanism for shared history is poorly understood. The current study investigated the ways in which memory for shared history is prioritised. Two experiments presented a referential communication task followed by a surprise recognition memory task, with the former task serving as an episode of shared history. Experiment 1 revealed superior memory for information that was both seen in the communicators' common ground and referred to, followed by information that was seen but not referred to, and finally by information privileged to the participants. Experiment 2 provided a replication of Experiment 1 and further demonstrated that these co-presence effects are not dependent on the presence of a speaker with a different perspective to the participant. The significance of working memory (WM) in understanding human cognition cannot be overemphasized, as it underlies a large array of abilities from reading to reasoning. A key debate in the WM literature has been the domain-generality or specificity of WM. Aside from its theoretical significance, this debate is important because of its practical implications, including brain training and analysis of individual differences. The diverse body of evidence from behavioral and neural sources, that in some cases point to domain-generality and in other cases to domain-specificity of WM, signals the inadequacy of framing the question simply as 'is WM domain-general or domain-specific?'. The current paper focuses on this problem. We use the latest theoretical and empirical advances in the field to propose a taxonomy for domain-generality/specificity of WM, as a suitable framework to guide future research on this topic. Given the fundamental role of working memory (WM) in all domains of cognition, a central question has been whether WM is domain-general. However, the term 'domain-general' has been used in different, and sometimes misleading, ways. By reviewing recent evidence and biologically plausible models of WM, we show that the level of domain-generality varies substantially between three facets of WM: in terms of computations, WM is largely domain-general. In terms of neural correlates, it contains both domain-general and domain-specific elements. Finally, in terms of application, it is mostly domain-specific. This variance encourages a shift of focus towards uncovering domain-general computational principles and away from domain-general approaches to the analysis of individual differences and WM training, favoring newer perspectives, such as training-as-skill-learning. A foundational goal of linguistics has been to understand why languages look the way they do. A range of possible explanations exist – from domain-specific representations to cognition-external factors like history and grammaticalization – and all of these undoubtedly play some role. But determining exactly how these link with specific features of language remains challenging, and the role of domain-specific mechanisms has been particularly contentious. In this paper, I highlight a growing new approach, which uses artificial language experiments to link individual-level biases to cross-linguistic trends in language structure. Using word and morpheme order as case studies, I will show how a range of different paradigms and learner populations allow us to make progress on this crucial issue in linguistics. I will focus on typological trends in word and morpheme order. For some ordering trends, experimental evidence points to variation across populations, suggesting that the best explanation for these patterns likely has its root in language history and grammaticalization. In other cases, the evidence points to the role of universal but domain-general cognitive biases, like transparency and simplicity. These domain-general biases interact with linguistic representations in important ways. Taken together these studies help adjudicate between alternative explanations for a number of specific ordering patterns and suggest a new sense of domain-specificity in the evolution of language. Purpose: Existing measures of rumination assess ruminative thought without reference to the content of ruminations. The present studies describe the construction and validation of the Rumination Domains Questionnaire, a new measure of rumination which considers the domain specificity of ruminative thought. Methods: A theoretical definition of rumination and domains of life were formulated through a literature review. Items were based on these domains, clinical/counselling case studies, and expert feedback. In Study 1, 106 preliminary items were reduced to 60 items through empirical analyses. In Study 2, the content and structural validity were assessed. Results: Items were retained based on empirical criteria and the final scale demonstrated acceptable fit for both a 10-factor model and a hierarchical model. Content validity and criterion validity were supported, and both 10-factor and hierarchical models demonstrated acceptable fit. This study aimed to investigate how the cognitive control system resolves conflicts when cognitive and emotional conflicts occur simultaneously, and how it performs. To achieve this, a factorial task-crossing design was employed, combining the spatial Simon task and the face-word emotional interference task, allowing cognitive and emotional conflicts to occur concurrently within a single trial. The results revealed that the Simon cognitive conflict was only associated with N2 and early SP, while it did not affect the amplitude of N450 and late SP. Conversely, the face-word emotional conflict affected the amplitude of N450 and late SP, but had no impact on N2 and early SP. These findings demonstrate the adaptive sequencing organization and domain specificity in cognitive-emotional dual conflict processing, which reflects the precise and flexible orchestration and strategic adjustments of the cognitive control system. Mastery motivation predicts achievement, but intricacies amongst pre-schoolers are unclear. In keeping with the Specificity Principle, school-age, and adolescent research demonstrates the importance of considering the setting conditions in which mastery motivation is observed. Here, Singaporean 4-year-olds' (N = 63) mastery-motivation-related behaviour (MMRB) (e.g. signs of persistence, focus, and pleasure) in mathematical and non-mathematical activities were observed. Relations between numeracy and MMRB during a mathematical game (outcome relevant setting) were determined, controlling for MMRB in other activities (outcome irrelevant settings). Association between MMRB during the mathematical game and receptive language (outcome irrelevant setting) was also examined. Consistent with the Specificity Principle, MMRB during the mathematical game was (i) associated with numeracy, after controlling for MMRB in other activities and (ii) did not predict language. Enhancing preschoolers' experiences, especially when implemented in contexts related to areas targeted for improvement, may benefit outcomes. In information retrieval, relevance is perceived as a multidimensional and dynamic concept influenced by user, task, and domain factors. Relying on this perspective, researchers have introduced multidimensional relevance models addressing diverse search tasks across numerous knowledge domains. Through our systematic review of 72 studies, we categorize research based on domain specificity and the distinct relevance aspects employed for estimating multidimensional relevance. Moreover, we highlight the approaches used to aggregate scores related to these factors and rank information items. Our insights underline the importance of concise definitions and unified methods for estimating relevance factors within and across domains. Finally, we identify benchmark collections for evaluations based on multiple relevance aspects while underscoring the necessity for new ones. Our findings suggest that large language models hold considerable promise for shaping future research in this field, mainly due to their relevance labeling abilities. Pyoverdines are high affinity siderophores produced by most Pseudomonas with a wide role in microbial interspecies interactions. They are primarily composed of a conserved chromophore moiety, an acyl side chain and a peptide backbone which may be highly variable among strains. Upon ferric iron sequestration, pyoverdines are internalized through specialized receptors. The peptide precursor of pyoverdine, termed ferribactin, is synthesized by a set of non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) enzymes and further modified by tailoring enzymes. While PvdL, the NRPS responsible for the synthesis of the peptide moiety that derives into the chromophore is conserved, the NRPSs for the peptide backbone are different across fluorescent Pseudomonas. Although the variation of pyoverdine is a widely recognized characteristic within the genus, the evolutionary events associated with the diversity and distribution of this trait remain mostly unknown. This study analyzed the NRPSs clusters for the biosynthesis of the peptide backbone of ferribactin in the genomes of a representative subset of strains of the Pseudomonas fluorescens complex. Bioinformatic analysis of the specificity of adenylation domains of the NRPSs allowed the prediction of 30 different pyoverdine variants. Phylogenetic reconstruction and mapping of the NRPS clusters pinpointed two different general levels of modifications. In the first level, a complete replacement of the set of NRPRs by horizontal transfer occurs. In the second level, the original set of NRPSs is modified through different mechanisms, including partial substitution of the NRPS genes by horizontal transfer, adenylation domain specificity change or NRPS accessory domain gain/loss. What enables athletes to perform creative actions in their sports? In the last two decades, sports studies have predominantly assumed that divergent thinking (DT) is the key ingredient and have developed sport-specific DT tests to assess players’ creativity. However, a fundamental question remains: Do players who score high on sport-specific DT tests perform more creative actions on the field? The DT approach in sports has recently been challenged by the hypothesis that creative actions are primarily enabled (or limited) by players’ motor skill repertoires. Here, predictions based on the DT and motor skill approach are tested in the domain of soccer. Studies 1a and b tested male under-12 players, and Study 2 tested female under-19 players of a professional soccer club. All three studies indicated no correlation between the creativity of actions performed on the field (rated with the Consensual Assessment Technique) and players’ soccer-specific DT. In contrast, moderate to high correlations between on-field creativity and motor skills were found. These results challenge the DT approach in sports and the validity of sport-specific DT tests, highlighting the crucial role of sensorimotor skills in performing creative actions in sports or other domains in which creative performance is embodied through motor actions.

Language and music are two human-unique capacities whose relationship remains debated. Some have argued for overlap in processing mechanisms, especially for structure processing. Such claims often concern the inferior frontal component of the language system located within Brocas area. However, others have failed to find overlap. Using a robust individual-subject fMRI approach, we examined the responses of language brain regions to music stimuli, and probed the musical abilities of individuals with severe aphasia. Across 4 experiments, we obtained a clear answer: music perception does not engage the language system, and judgments about music structure are possible even in the presence of severe damage to the language network. In particular, the language regions responses to music are generally low, often below the fixation baseline, and never exceed responses elicited by nonmusic auditory conditions, like animal sounds. Furthermore, the language regions are not sensitive to music structure: they show low responses to both intact and structure-scrambled music, and to melodies with vs. without structural violations. Finally, in line with past patient investigations, individuals with aphasia, who cannot judge sentence grammaticality, perform well on melody well-formedness judgments. Thus, the mechanisms that process structure in language do not appear to process music, including music syntax.

Metacognition refers to the ability to monitor and control one's cognitive processes, which plays an important role in decision‐making throughout the lifespan. It is still debated whether metacognitive abilities decline with age. Neuroimaging evidence suggests that metacognition is served by domain‐specific mechanisms. These domains may differentially decline with increasing age. The current investigates whether the error‐related negativity (ERN) and the error positivity (Pe) which reflect error detection and error awareness, respectively, differ across perceptual and memory domains in young and older adults. In total, 38 young adults and 37 older adults completed a classic Flanker Task (perceptual) and an adapted memory‐based version. No difference in ERN amplitude was found between young and older adults and across domains. Perceptual ERN peaked earlier than Memory ERN. Memory ΔERN was larger than Perceptual ΔERN. Pe was smaller in older adults and ΔPe was larger for perceptual than memory flanker. Memory Pe peaked earlier in young as compared to older adults. Multivariate analyses of whole scalp data supported cross‐domain differences. During the task, ERN decreased in young but not in older adults. Memory Pe decreased in young adults but increased in older adults while no significant change in perceptual Pe was found. The study's findings suggest that neural correlates of error monitoring differ across cognitive domains. Moreover, it was shown that error awareness declines in old age but its within‐task dynamics vary across cognitive domains. Possible mechanisms underlying metacognition impairments in aging are discussed. The present study employed a novel memory version of the Flanker task and demonstrated domain‐specific differences in error monitoring neurophysiology in young and older adults. Moreover, we found that Pe was smaller in older adults but its within‐task dynamics varied across cognitive domains. It is a common view that the intricate array of specialized domains in the ventral visual pathway is innately prespecified. What this review postulates is that it is not. We explore the origins of domain specificity, hypothesizing that the adult brain emerges from an interplay between a domain-general map-based architecture, shaped by intrinsic mechanisms, and experience. We argue that the most fundamental innate organization of cortex in general, and not just the visual pathway, is a map-based topography that governs how the environment maps onto the brain, how brain areas interconnect, and ultimately, how the brain processes information. Is language distinct from other cognition during development? Does neural machinery for language emerge from general‐purpose neural mechanisms, becoming tuned for language after years of experience and maturation? Answering these questions will shed light on the origins of domain‐specificity in the brain. We address these questions using precision fMRI, scanning young children (35 months to 9 years of age) on an auditory language localizer, spatial working memory localizer (engaging the domain‐general multiple demand [MD] network), and a resting‐state scan. We create subject‐specific functional regions of interest for each network and examine their selectivity, specificity, and functional connectivity. We find young children show domain‐specific, left‐lateralized language activation, and that the language network is not responsive to domain‐general cognitive load. Additionally, the cortically adjacent MD network is selective to cognitive load, but not to language. These networks show higher within versus between‐network functional connectivity. This connectivity is stable across ages (examined cross‐sectionally and longitudinally), whereas language responses increase with age and across time within subject, reflecting a domain‐specific developmental change. Overall, we provide evidence for a double dissociation of the language and MD network throughout development, in both their function and connectivity. These findings suggest that domain‐specificity, even for uniquely human cognition like language, develops early and distinctly from mechanisms that presumably support other human cognition. To understand language, we must infer structured meanings from real-time auditory or visual signals. Researchers have long focused on word-by-word structure building in working memory as a mechanism that might enable this feat. However, some have argued that language processing does not typically involve rich word-by-word structure building, and/or that apparent working memory effects are underlyingly driven by surprisal (how predictable a word is in context). Consistent with this alternative, some recent behavioral studies of naturalistic language processing that control for surprisal have not shown clear working memory effects. In this fMRI study, we investigate a range of theory-driven predictors of word-by-word working memory demand during naturalistic language comprehension in humans of both sexes under rigorous surprisal controls. In addition, we address a related debate about whether the working memory mechanisms involved in language comprehension are language specialized or domain general. To do so, in each participant, we functionally localize (1) the language-selective network and (2) the "multiple-demand" network, which supports working memory across domains. Results show robust surprisal-independent effects of memory demand in the language network and no effect of memory demand in the multiple-demand network. Our findings thus support the view that language comprehension involves computationally demanding word-by-word structure building operations in working memory, in addition to any prediction-related mechanisms. Further, these memory operations appear to be primarily conducted by the same neural resources that store linguistic knowledge, with no evidence of involvement of brain regions known to support working memory across domains.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT This study uses fMRI to investigate signatures of working memory (WM) demand during naturalistic story listening, using a broad range of theoretically motivated estimates of WM demand. Results support a strong effect of WM demand in the brain that is distinct from effects of word predictability. Further, these WM demands register primarily in language-selective regions, rather than in "multiple-demand" regions that have previously been associated with WM in nonlinguistic domains. Our findings support a core role for WM in incremental language processing, using WM resources that are specialized for language.

Bismuth is a xenobiotic metal with a high affinity to sulfur that is used in a variety of therapeutic applications. Bi(III) induces the cysteine-rich metallothionein (MT), a protein known to form two-domain cluster structures with certain metals such as Zn(II), Cd(II), or Cu(I). The binding of Bi(III) to MTs has been previously studied, but there are conflicting reports on the stoichiometry and binding pathway, which appear to be highly dependent on pH and initial metal-loading status of the MT. Additionally, domain specificity has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, ESI-MS was used to determine the binding constants of [Bi(EDTA)]-binding to apo-MT1a and its individual aMT fragment. The results were compared to previous experiments using ßMT1a and βαMT3. Domain specificity was investigated using proteolysis methods and the initial cooperatively formed Bi2MT was found to bind to cysteines that spanned across the traditional metal binding domain regions. Titrations of [Bi-(EDTA)]-into Zn7MT were performed and were found to result in a maximum stoichiometry of Bi7MT, contrasting the Bi6MT formed when [Bi(EDTA)] was added to apo-MT. These results show that the initial structure of the apo-MT determines the stoichiometry of new incoming metals and explains the previously observed differences in stoichiometry. Across human societies, people are sometimes willing to punish norm violators. Such punishment can take the form of revenge from victims, seemingly altruistic intervention from third parties, or legitimized sanctioning from institutional representatives. Although prior work has documented cross-cultural regularities in norm enforcement, substantial variation exists in the prevalence and forms of punishment across societies. Such cross-societal variation may arise from universal psychological mechanisms responding to different socio-ecological conditions, or from cultural evolutionary processes, resulting in different norm enforcement systems. To date, empirical evidence from comparative studies across diverse societies has remained disconnected, owing to a lack of interdisciplinary integration and a prevalent tendency of empirical studies to focus on different underpinnings of variation in norm enforcement. To provide a more complete view of the shared and unique aspects of punishment across societies, we review prior research in anthropology, economics and psychology, and take a first step towards integrating the plethora of socio-ecological and cultural factors proposed to explain cross-societal variation in norm enforcement. We conclude by discussing how future cross-societal research can use diverse methodologies to illuminate key questions on the domain-specificity of punishment, the diversity of tactics supporting social norms, and their role in processes of norm change. Domain‐specificity is a topic of debate within the field of creativity. To shed light on this issue, we conducted a meta‐analysis of cross‐domain correlations based on the Kaufman Domains of Creativity Scale (K‐DOCS). To evaluate the model fit of one general factor versus two factors that encompass the primary K‐DOCS subscales (Scholarly, Everyday, Artistic, Scientific, and Performance), we employed the one‐stage meta‐analytic structural equation modeling (OSMASEM) approach. Poor fit of these models would provide evidence of domain‐specificity, as the proposed models would not outperform the independence model. Our analysis included 45 correlation matrices from 30 studies, with a total sample size of 31,136 participants. The results provided support for a general domain of creativity, as well as a two‐factor solution consisting of Arts and Sciences factors. Among the subscales, the highest correlation was found between the Artistic and Performance domains (r =.478), while the smallest correlation was observed between the Everyday and Scientific domains (r =.178). Furthermore, moderator analyses incorporating age and gender revealed that the Scientific and Everyday subscales exhibited a stronger factor load in older participants compared to younger participants. Location-based sentiment analysis is a promising field of study with various applications, but faces issues due to location uncertainty and lack of domain specificity. Our proposed solution automatically builds domain-adaptive lexicons for region-specific sentiment analysis. An initial lexicon for location estimation is created using topic modeling on news articles related to the target domain. For sentiment estimation, we start with a preexisting lexicon. Both initial lexicons are expanded recursively with a word embedding trained on social media messages from the target area. The final lexicons are used for location estimation and for automatically assigning sentiment labels to data, which is then used for fine-tuning a BERT transformer network. Our approach is validated in a case study of Amsterdam, demonstrating that both the automatically expanded lexicons and the fine-tuned network outperform their respective baselines. This illustrates how our system can enhance its performance by adapting to the domain, with minimal manual input. While many theoretical proposals about the relationship between language and music processing have been proposed over the past 40 years, recent empirical advances have shed new light on this relationship. Many features are shared between language and music, inspiring research in the fields of linguistic theory, systematic musicology, and cognitive (neuro‐)science. This research has led to many and diverse findings, making comparisons difficult. In the current review, we propose a framework within which to organise past research and conduct future research, suggesting that past research has assumed either domain‐specificity or domain‐generality for language and music. Domain‐specific approaches theoretically and experimentally describe aspects of language and music processing assuming that there is shared (structure‐building) processing. Domain‐general approaches theoretically and experimentally describe how mechanisms such as cognitive control, attention or neural entrainment can explain language and music processing. Here we propose that combining elements from domain‐specific and domain‐general approaches can be beneficial for advances in theoretical and experimental work, as well as for diagnoses and interventions for atypical populations. We provide examples of past research which has implicitly merged domain‐specific and domain‐general assumptions, and suggest new experimental designs that can result from such a combination aiming to further our understanding of the human brain. Implicit mentalizing involves the automatic awareness of others’ perspectives, but its domain-specificity is debated. The Joint Simon task demonstrates implicit mentalizing as a Joint Simon effect (JSE), proposed to stem from spontaneous action co-representation of a social partner's frame of reference in the Joint (but not Individual) task. However, evidence also shows that any sufficiently salient entity (not necessarily social) can induce the JSE. Here, we investigated the content of co-representation through a novel Joint Simon task where participants viewed a set of distinct images assigned to either themselves or their partner. Critically, a surprise image recognition task allowed us to identify partner-driven effects exclusive to the Joint task-sharing condition, versus the Individual condition. We did not observe a significant JSE, preventing us from drawing confident conclusions about the effect's domain-specificity. However, the recognition task results revealed that participants in the Joint task did not recognize their partner's stimuli more accurately than participants in the Individual task. This implies that participants were no more likely to encode content from their partner's perspective during the Joint task. Overall, this study pushes methodological boundaries regarding the elicitation of co-representation in the Joint Simon task and demonstrates the potential utility of a surprise recognition task.

Experiment 1 involved 152 participants who were asked to make decisions for themselves and a single other in three risk domains. In Experiment 2, 178 participants were recruited, with money loss domain added and the “others” divided into “intimate others” to explore the effect of social distance on self-others risk decision-making in four domains. In Experiment 3, 233 participants were involved, and the number of “others” was expanded to explore the differences between “individual decision-making” and “group decision-making”.Results: In the relationship domain, individuals were more risk-averse when making decisions for themselves, while in the money gain domain and personal safety domain, individuals’ risk-taking tendencies when making decisions for themselves were significantly higher than that for new friends. In the money loss domain, no significant difference was found among the three decision-maker roles. Document classification, a fundamental process within the field of natural language processing, has benefitted from the recent advancements in deep learning, particularly in enhancing accuracy. Traditional text clustering methods, such as bag-of-words models, exhibit domain specificity and struggle to handle vast data volumes. They also face limitations in elucidating sophisticated patterns and intricate word and phrase relationships within textual data. These constraints may adversely affect the accuracy of text clustering, subsequently impacting downstream applications like information retrieval, document classification, and natural language processing. This paper proposes a novel text classification model, termed Deep Contextual Embeddings Model (DCEM), designed to improve document classification accuracy. The DCEM integrates pre-trained deep contextual embedding architectures (e.g., GPT-2) with text clustering algorithms (e.g., KMeans). It employs contextual embedding models to enhance document clustering accuracy by capturing context and semantic depth, improving data structure comprehension, and eliminating noise for more precise results. Experimental results, derived from the application of DCEM on AG News, Reuters-21578, and IMDB reviews datasets, indicate a significant improvement in document classification accuracy (81.09%), compared to traditional text clustering and document classification methods. This study examined domain specificity among 306 high-school students using the Creative Activity and Accomplishment Checklist (CAAC). The CAAC provides both the quantity of activity and quality of accomplishment scores, allowing an empirical test of possible polymathy among students, some of whom were gifted. Polymathy occurs when an individual performs creatively in more than one domain. This investigation’s two objectives were to replicate domain specificity studies with the newest version of the CAAC, which included new domains (i.e., technological and everyday creativity) and quality and quantity scores, and to use it to test for polymathy among students. Previous work with adults suggested that polymaths are creative in multiple domains. They often invest in creative avocations that support their professional creativity. Some evidence of polymathy was uncovered; however, it was not common in this sample. Support for domain specificity was reasonably clear in the present results, yet it was not all-or-nothing but rather a matter of degree. Domains overlapped to varying amount. The amount of overlap varied with the level of talent and from domain to domain. The clearest support for polymathy came from regression analyses which revealed a significant relationship between the quantity of activity in some domains and the quality of creative accomplishment in others. Drawing on the appraisal theory of emotions and domain specificity perspective, we explore why and when work-to-family conflict leads to unethical pro-family behavior in the workplace. In particular, we propose that work-to-family conflict reinforces unethical pro-family behavior via employee felt guilt. Further, supervisor support for family issues attenuates the relationship between work-to-family conflict and felt guilt, whereas perceived forgiveness climate strengthens the relationship between felt guilt and unethical pro-family behavior. Two time-lagged field studies conducted in Pakistan and China supported our hypotheses. Study 1 demonstrated that work-to-family guilt mediated the relationship between work-to-family conflict and unethical pro-family behavior. Study 2 replicated these findings and provided additional support for our boundary conditions. Specifically, supervisor support for family issues buffered the positive effect of work-to-family conflict on work-to-family guilt; perceived forgiveness climate amplified the positive effect of work-to-family guilt on unethical pro-family behavior. Theory: Argumentation is crucial for all academic disciplines. Nevertheless, a lack of argumentation skills among students is evident. Two core aspects of argumentation are the recognition of argument structures (e.g., backing up claims with premises, according to the Toulmin model) and the recognition of fallacies. As both aspects may be related to content knowledge, students studying different subjects might exhibit different argumentation skills depending on whether the content is drawn from their own or from a foreign subject. Therefore, we developed an instrument to measure the recognition of both argument structures and fallacies among the groups of preservice teachers and business economics students in both their respective domains (pedagogy and economics), and a neutral domain (sustainability). For the recognition of fallacies, we distinguished between congruent and incongruent fallacies. In congruent fallacies, the two aspects of argument quality, i.e., deductive validity and inductive strength, provide converging evidence against high argument quality. In incongruent fallacies, these two aspects diverge. Based on dual process theories, we expected to observe differences in the recognition of congruent and incongruent fallacies. Aims: We investigated whether these two abilities are domain-specific and whether the recognition of fallacies depends on the congruence of two aspects of argument quality. Methods: 267 preservice teachers and 56 business economics students participated in the study. For the recognition of argument structures, participants assigned the five statements constituting one argument to the corresponding component according to the Toulmin model. For the recognition of fallacies, we created arguments and incorporated a common fallacy into some of them: formal fallacy, overgeneralization, irrelevance, or circularity. Research underscores the imperative for global dietary shifts to curb global temperature rise within the Paris Agreement's 2°C limit. Understanding human dietary behaviour is crucial for effective environmental policies promoting pro-environmental actions. A significant obstacle is the lack of awareness regarding the CO2 implications of meat and dairy consumption, hindering sustainable diet adoption. Thus, evaluating knowledge-based interventions requires reliable tools to quantify climate impact knowledge related to food consumption. Unfortunately, existing pro-environmental knowledge measurement instruments lack domain specificity, leaving a void in assessing climate-conscious food choice knowledge. Addressing this void, our climate externalities food knowledge test was developed. It underwent calibration via item response theory with a German university student sample and validation across one German and two Chilean student samples. The resulting scale exhibited a strong approximate model fit, acceptable item fit metrics, good reliability and the ability to predict climate-relevant food-choice patterns and expert group performance. However, notable differential item functioning was observed based on cultural context. That all academic writing should be based on a comprehensive review of previous research is well understood. Yet how to accomplish this task given the burgeoning literature in our field and in the many contributing fields of study has received surprisingly little attention in publishing guidelines in HRD and related fields. To encourage the development of HRD scholarship as a distinct and yet interdisciplinary body of knowledge, discernment, justification, and clarity about the selection and representation of the existing literature are needed in three areas. Domain specificity is concerned with the link to the HRD disciplinary base, practice relevance situates the work in a recognized HRD practice domain, and communicative interest clarifies the author's value stance. The conclusion addresses implications for novice and experienced writers, the training of graduate and professional students, and the editorial policies of the leading HRD journals. We build on a recently proposed method for stepwise explaining the solutions to Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) in a human understandable way. An explanation here is a sequence of simple inference steps where simplicity is quantified by a cost function. Explanation generation algorithms rely on extracting Minimal Unsatisfiable Subsets (MUSs) of a derived unsatisfiable formula, exploiting a one-to-one correspondence between so-called non-redundant explanations and MUSs. However, MUS extraction algorithms do not guarantee subset minimality or optimality with respect to a given cost function. Therefore, we build on these formal foundations and address the main points of improvement, namely how to generate explanations efficiently that are provably optimal (with respect to the given cost metric). To this end, we developed (1) a hitting set-based algorithm for finding the optimal constrained unsatisfiable subsets; (2) a method for reusing relevant information across multiple algorithm calls; and (3) methods for exploiting domain-specific information to speed up the generation of explanation sequences. We have experimentally validated our algorithms on a large number of CSP problems. We found that our algorithms outperform the MUS approach in terms of explanation quality and computational time (on average up to 56 % faster than a standard MUS approach). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to differential susceptibility theory (DST), some children may be more sensitive to both positive and negative features of the environment. However, research has generated a list of widely disparate temperamental traits that may reflect differential susceptibility to the environment. In addition, findings have implicated these temperament × environment interactions in predicting a wide variety of child outcomes. This study uses a novel evolutionary model of temperament to examine whether differential susceptibility operates in a domain-general or domain-specific manner. Using a racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of 243 preschoolers and their parents (56% female; 48% African American), we examined the interactions between maternal and paternal parenting quality and two evolutionary informed temperament profiles (i.e., Hawks and Doves) in predicting changes in teacher-reported conduct problems and depressive symptoms from preschool to first grade. Results suggest that differential susceptibility operates in a domain-specific fashion. Specifically, the "Hawk" temperament was differentially susceptible to maternal parenting in predicting externalizing problems. In contrast, the "Dove" temperament was susceptible to both paternal and maternal parenting quality in predicting changes in depressive symptoms. Objectives Past studies showed that intergenerational contact is beneficial in improving attitudes toward older people. To date, however, research on the benefits of contact with older adults focused on younger adults (intergenerational contact), overlooking the effects for older adults (contact with same-age peers). In this study, we investigated the association between contact with older adults and views of the self in old age in a domain-specific way among younger and older adults. Methods The sample (n = 2,356) comprised younger (39–55 years) and older (65–90 years) adults who participated in the aging as future study and were from China (Hong Kong and Taiwan), the Czech Republic, Germany, and the United States. We used moderated mediation models for data analysis. Results Contact with older adults was related to more positive views of the self in old age and this effect was mediated by more positive stereotypes of older people. These relations were stronger for older adults. Beneficial effects of contact with older adults emerged mostly in the domains of friends and leisure, but less in the family domain. Discussion Having interactions with other older adults may help favorably shape how younger adults and particularly older adults view their own aging, especially in relation to friends and leisure activities. From the perspective of older adults, having regular contacts with other older adults may increase the heterogeneity of exposure to different aging experiences, thus encouraging the formation of more differentiated stereotypes of older people and of their views of themselves in old age. Purpose: Despite the fact that research on creativity and cognition have garnered the attention of researchers and practitioners for decades, there is a lack of valid, reliable, and accessible instruments for enhancing and measuring these critical skills. Leveraging research from The LEGO Foundation and in collaboration with BrainPOP and the Learning Economy Foundation, this paper introduces an assessment framework for holistic skills and reports evidence from the 2022 validation study. Design/methodology/approach: The complexities associated with both competencies such as multidimensionality, authenticity, and domain specificity pose a major issue for its measurement and credentialing. This paper provides evidence-based insights on promising ways to measure and provide actionable insights on holistic skills. Findings: Preliminary evidence supports the assessment framework for holistic skills. Research limitations/implications: Future directions for further development of the assessment are discussed. Practical implications: The framework should also be of help for practitioners looking for research-based guiding principles for the design of learning-through-play activities aimed to help develop holistic skills across a wide range of digital, physical, and hybrid modalities. Social implications: The framework provides new instruments and insights for evaluating the social and educational impact of learning-through-play programs and initiatives. This study was designed to compare the validity of the Inventory of Problems (IOP-29) and its newly developed memory module (IOP-M) in 150 patients clinically referred for neuropsychological assessment. Criterion groups were psychometrically derived based on established performance and symptom validity tests (PVTs and SVTs). The criterion-related validity of the IOP-29 was compared to that of the Negative Impression Management scale of the Personality Assessment Inventory (NIMPAI) and the criterion-related validity of the IOP-M was compared to that of Trial-1 on the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM-1). The IOP-29 correlated significantly more strongly (z = 2.50, p =.01) with criterion PVTs than the NIMPAI (rIOP-29 =.34; rNIM-PAI =.06), generating similar overall correct classification values (OCCIOP-29: 79–81%; OCCNIM-PAI: 71–79%). Similarly, the IOP-M correlated significantly more strongly (z = 2.26, p =.02) with criterion PVTs than the TOMM-1 (rIOP-M =.79; rTOMM-1 =.59), generating similar overall correct classification values (OCCIOP-M: 89–91%; OCCTOMM-1: 84–86%). Findings converge with the cumulative evidence that the IOP-29 and IOP-M are valuable additions to comprehensive neuropsychological batteries. Results also confirm that symptom and performance validity are distinct clinical constructs, and domain specificity should be considered while calibrating instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although anecdotal evidence suggests that control-threatening situations are associated with an increase in conspiracy beliefs, existing research does not support this "compensatory control" hypothesis. In the current study, we test a more refined hypothesis: that the link between control threat and conspiracy beliefs is domain specific, such that perceived control in a particular domain should lead to conspiracy beliefs pertaining to that domain only. Moreover, given that conspiracy beliefs are stigmatized (i.e., not socially acceptable), we propose that they should be endorsed only when other compensatory systems are frustrated. We test these ideas in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants from North Macedonia and New Zealand, who differed in perceived government effectiveness, filled in a questionnaire measuring domain-specific and domain-general perceived control, as well as domain-specific and domain-general conspiracy beliefs. As expected, domain specificity of the control threat predicted domain-specific conspiracy beliefs in the Macedonian group only. Over the last several decades, research on executive function in children has flourished, producing a wealth of empirical findings. These findings have raised many theoretical and methodological questions that warrant attention and are addressed in this special issue. This introduction to the special issue reviews some of the recent history of the field before introducing the seven target articles. We introduce these articles in the context of current theoretical and methodological issues: domain generality versus domain specificity of executive function, ecological and cultural validity of executive function measures, executive function training and transfer, and the nature of relations between executive function and achievement and other outcomes. This diverse set of articles collectively provides many fresh, testable ideas that promise to advance the field and usher in the next wave of theory-guided executive function research.
