Goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) are deep-diving cetaceans known for their elusive nature and specialized foraging behavior. In 2019 and 2020, six telemetry tags were deployed on these whales in Southern California, resulting in 395 h of acoustic and diving data. Foraging dives were manually identified by the presence of echolocation pulses and buzzes, and generalized additive models assessed factors influencing foraging behavior. The median bathymetric depth at foraging sites was 1,419 m (IQR = 359), and the maximum dive depth was highly correlated with bathymetry depth. Individuals started echolocating on descent at a median depth of 410 m (IQR = 74); pulses were not observed shallower than 292 m. Echolocation ceased during the bottom phase for 81.6% of dives, at a median depth of 1,265 m (IQR = 472); pulses were not observed shallower than 587 m on ascent. The median depth of buzzes was 1,215 m (IQR = 479) with 63% occurring during the bottom phase. Deeper dives correlated with longer durations of diving and echolocation, greater echolocation end depths, and wider bottom phase echolocation depth inter-quartile range. The median difference between dive depth and bottom phase median echolocation depth was 98.3 m (IQR = 48.5), suggesting whales in this region forage in a narrow band close to the seafloor. In the San Nicolas Basin, individuals exhibited longer echolocation durations, produced more pulses, and started and ended echolocating at greater depths compared to adjacent regions. Abstract Predator–prey interactions in marine ecosystems are dynamically influenced by light, as demonstrated by diel vertical migrations of low-trophic level organisms. At high latitudes, the long winter nights can provide foraging opportunities for marine predators targeting vertically migrating prey closer to the surface at night. However, there is limited documentation of such diel patterns in marine predators under extreme light regimes. To address this, we recorded the diving behavior of 17 harbour porpoises just south of the Arctic circle in West Greenland, from summer to winter. Unlike classical diel vertical migration, the porpoises dove 24–37% deeper at night and the frequency of deep dives (> 100 m) increased tenfold as they entered the darkest months. The daily mean depth was negatively correlated with daylength, suggesting an increased diving activity when approaching the polar night. Our findings suggest a light-mediated strategy in which harbour porpoises would either target (i) benthic prey, (ii) pelagic prey migrating seasonally towards the seafloor, or (iii) vertically migrating prey that may be otherwise inaccessible in deeper waters at night, therefore maximizing feeding activity during extended periods of darkness. Extreme light regimes observed at high latitudes are therefore critical in structuring pelagic communities and food webs.

Abundance estimation of wildlife populations is frequently derived from systematic survey data. Accuracy and precision of estimates, however, depend on the number of replicate surveys, and on adjustments made for animals unavailable to (availability bias), or available but undetected (perception bias) by observers. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the relative influence of methodological, environmental and behavioral factors on availability bias estimates from photographic and visual aerial surveys of a small cetacean with a highly clumped distribution, the beluga (Delphinapterus leucas). It also estimates the effect of the number of surveys on accuracy and precision of abundance estimates, using 28 replicate visual surveys flown within a 16--29 day window depending on survey year. Availability bias was estimated using detailed dive data from 27 beluga from the St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada, and applied to systematic visual and photographic aerial surveys of this population, flown using various survey platforms. Dive and surface interval durations varied among individuals, and averaged (weighted) 176.6 s (weighted s.e. = 12.6 s) and 51.6 s (weighted s.e. = 4.5 s), respectively. Dive time and instantaneous availability, but not surface time, were affected by local turbidity, seafloor depth, whale behavior (i.e., whether beluga were likely in transit or not), and latent processes that were habitat-specific. Overall, adjustments of availability for these effects remained minor compared to effects from survey design (photographic or visual) and type of platform, and observer search patterns. For instance, mean availability varied from 0.33--0.38 among photographic surveys depending on sightings distribution across the study area, but exceeded 0.40 for all visual surveys. Availability also varied considerably depending on whether observers searched within 0-90° (0.42--0.60) or 170° (0.70--0.80). Simulation-based power analysis indicates a large benefit associated with conducting more than 1 or 2 survey reps, but a declining benefit of conducting > 5--10 survey reps. An increase in sample size from 2, to 5, and 10 reps decreased the CV from 30, to 19 and 13%, respectively, and increased the probability of the abundance estimate being within 15% of true abundance from 0.42, to 0.59 and 0.69 in species like beluga. Simple Summary: Observing juvenile sea turtles at sea is challenging due to their small sizes and cryptic behaviors and is compounded by the vastness of the ocean. The first phases of sea turtle life history, commonly known as the "Lost Years", remain enigmatic and poorly understood, despite significant advances in animal ad ocean observation technologies. Our study focused on testing new prototypes of microsatellite tags and analyzing their performance on 160 juvenile sea turtles of four species in the North Atlantic. The results demonstrated that, despite challenges brought by miniaturization, the tags proved effective. However, the tracking periods were shorter than expected, limiting our ability to deeply study and understand the turtles' dispersal features. We found that tracking durations varied among species, indicating some limitations due to certain behaviors such as neritic interactions or diving activity by young sea turtles, and revealing that some of their behaviors may be too strenuous for small tags. Our findings have important implications for the bio-logging community, especially those studying marine animals such as sea turtles. Our study showcases recent technological advances and contributes to improving the effectiveness and durability of miniaturized satellite tags deployed within the marine environment. Our methodologies and findings have improved our understanding of the "Lost Years", promise to inform ongoing future technological advances and contribute to increasing the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Our results reveal that, despite certain unfavorable transmission features, overall tag performance was satisfactory. However, most track durations were shorter than those observed on individuals of similar size in other studies and did not allow for detailed analyses of trajectories and turtle behavior. Our study further suggests that tracking durations are correlated with the targeted species, highlighting a lack of robustness against some neritic behaviors. Unprecedented diving data obtained for neonate sea turtles in this study suggest that the vertical behaviors of early juveniles are already too strenuous for these miniaturized tags. Despite multiple studies examining the diving behavior of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) at coarse resolution over broad distances, there is still a paucity of high‐resolution diving data collected in areas where foraging has been confirmed. Short‐term (~1–3 h) deployments of suction cup tags with time–depth recorders (TDRs) on 10 free‐swimming leatherback turtles in a foraging area off Nova Scotia, Canada during August and September (2007–2014), captured a total of 161 dives. High‐resolution (1–5 s sampling rate) dive profile data indicated variability in diving behavior between and within individuals. On average, turtles spent 55.7% of their time diving and 44.3% at the surface. Turtles generally performed short (mean duration = 250.4 s [SD = 47.9 s]) and shallow dives (mean depth = 24.3 m [SD = 5.8 m]). We recorded a mean dive descent rate of 0.32 m/s, which is faster than values recorded for leatherbacks in tropical waters. This may reflect differences in environment, behavioral mode (e.g., foraging vs. inter‐nesting), and body condition. Linear mixed‐effects models suggest a significant positive correlation between descent rate and mean depth, maximum depth, and integrated vertical bottom movement (IVBM). Turtles with faster descent rates dove deeper and increased their predicted foraging behavior (IVBM, or the sum of absolute differences in depth changes while at the bottom portion of their dives). Models additionally showed that dive time, bottom time, and IVBM were all positively correlated to the post‐dive surfacing. This suggests that turtles required more time at the surface to recover and/or handle prey following longer dives characterized by increased vertical movement at the bottom portion of the dive. Dives were complex; the application of standard dive type/shape analysis may be over‐simplified and inappropriate for leatherbacks foraging in these habitats. This paper presents one of the first applications of pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) on giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) in a "no-take" marine protected area (MPA) in the South China Sea (Dongsha Attol National Park). To determine appropriate management strategies in and around the MPA, fundamental ecological information is required on movement patterns, habitat preferences and home ranges. During May 2016 to September 2018, 10 giant trevally were tagged. Eight tags reported and remained affixed from 17 to 243 days and linear displacements ranged from 26 to 826 km from deployment to pop-up locations. The distributions of time spent at depth (~ 0–67 m) and temperature (21.5–35.4 °C) indicated that fish were mainly confined to the mixed-layer but occasionally made deeper descents during nighttime (~ 50–60 m) than daytime (~ 30–40 m), but the diel transitions were not pronounced. Most probable tracks calculated from a state-space Kalman filter suggested site-fidelity and/or cyclic north to south dispersal patterns possibly related to spawning and/or foraging as half of the pop-up locations were within ~ 100 km of the tagging location. Given these findings, it is possible that giant trevally may need to be managed at larger spatial scales to preserve genetic diversity. Additional tagging studies, however, with genetic data and conventional tags, augmented with a subset of PSATs, will be necessary to test this hypothesis at a higher level of statistical power. Abstract Background Studying animal movement in the context of the optimal foraging theory has led to the development of simple movement metrics for inferring feeding activity. Yet, the predictive capacity of these metrics in natural environments has been given little attention, raising serious questions of the validity of these metrics. The aim of this study is to test whether simple continuous movement metrics predict feeding intensity in a marine predator, the southern elephant seal (SES; Mirounga leonine), and investigate potential factors influencing the predictive capacity of these metrics. Methods We equipped 21 female SES from the Kerguelen Archipelago with loggers and recorded their movements during post-breeding foraging trips at sea. From accelerometry, we estimated the number of prey encounter events (nPEE) and used it as a reference for feeding intensity. We also extracted several track- and dive-based movement metrics and evaluated how well they explain and predict the variance in nPEE. We conducted our analysis at two temporal scales (dive and day), with two dive profile resolutions (high at 1 Hz and low with five dive segments), and two types of models (linear models and regression trees). Results We found that none of the movement metrics predict nPEE with satisfactory power. The vertical transit rates (primarily the ascent rate) during dives had the best predictive performance among all metrics. Dive metrics performed better than track metrics and all metrics performed on average better at the scale of days than the scale of dives. However, the performance of the models at the scale of days showed higher variability among individuals suggesting distinct foraging tactics. Dive-based metrics performed better when computed from high-resolution dive profiles than low-resolution dive profiles. Finally, regression trees produced more accurate predictions than linear models. Conclusions Our study reveals that simple movement metrics do not predict feeding activity in free-ranging marine predators. This could emerge from differences between individuals, temporal scales, and the data resolution used, among many other factors. We conclude that these simple metrics should be avoided or carefully tested a priori with the studied species and the ecological context to account for significant influencing factors.

The energetic costs of lactation have been studied in many marine mammals, but little is known about the behavioral adjustments needed to cope with this event. By simultaneously measuring foraging behavior of lactating and nonlactating Antarctic fur seal females, we estimate the behavioral changes necessary to cope with the constraints of lactation and include the first comparative record of dive behavior between lactating and nonlactating female otariids. Nonlactating females exhibited highly variable foraging trip durations and spent long times onshore between trips. In contrast, lactating females exhibited consistently shorter trips and spent half the time hauled‐out compared to nonlactating females likely to maximize offspring provisioning. Lactating females show a reduced mean time per dive but greater percentage of time per trip spent diving compared to nonlactating animals. The reduction in time onshore and trip duration, together with modifications in dive performance suggests additional effort of lactating females to compensate for the constraints of rearing a pup, which has not been observed previously due to the lack of simultaneous comparison of lactating and nonlactating individuals. When possible, future studies of maternal investment should also include nonlactating individuals, since lactation may have a strong synergistic effect with other aspects shaping foraging behavior. Allometry predicts that the 12–17-g American water shrew (Sorex palustris)—the world’s smallest mammalian diver—will have the highest diving metabolic rate coupled with the lowest total body oxygen storage capacity, skeletal muscle buffering capacity, and glycolytic potential of any endothermic diver. Consistent with expectations, and potentially owing to their low thermal inertia, water shrews had a significantly higher diving metabolic rate in 107C water (8.77 mL O2 g-1 h-1 ) compared with 307C water (6.57 mL O2 g-1 h-1 ). Unlike larger-bodied divers, muscle myoglobin contributed minimally (7.7%–12.4%) to total onboard O2 stores of juvenile and adult water shrews, respectively, but was offset by high blood O2 carrying capacities (26.4%–26.9% v/v). Diving was predominantly aerobic, as only 1.2%–2.3% of dives in 107C and 307C water, respectively, exceeded the calculated aerobic dive limits at these temperatures (10.8–14.4 s). The mean voluntary dive time of water shrews during 20-min trials in 37C–307C water was 5:0 5 0:1 s (N = 25, n = 1, 628), with a mean maximum dive time of 10:1 5 0:4 s. However, the average dive duration (6:9 5 0:2 s, n = 257) of radio-telemetered shrews exclusively foraging in a simulated riparian environment (37C water) for 12–28 h suggests that mean (but not maximum) dive times of water shrews in the wild may be longer. Mean dive duration, duration of the longest dive, and total time in water all decreased significantly as water temperature declined, suggesting that shrews employed behavioral thermoregulation to defend against immersion hypothermia. Additionally, free-diving shrews in the 24-h trials consistently elevated core body temperature by ∼17C immediately before initiating aquatic foraging bouts and ended these bouts when body temperature was still at or above normal resting levels (∼37.87C). We suggest that this observed predive hyperthermia aids to heighten the impressive somatosensory physiology, and hence foraging efficiency, of this diminutive predator while submerged. Despite spending most time underwater, the technology in use to track whales over large geographic ranges via satellite has been largely limited to locational data, with most applications focusing on characterizing their horizontal movements. We describe the development of the RDW tag, a new Argos-based satellite telemetry device that incorporates sensors for monitoring the movements and dive behavior of large whales over several months without requiring recovery. Based on an implantable design, the tag features a saltwater conductivity switch, a tri-axial accelerometer, and an optional pressure transducer, along with onboard software for data processing and detection of behavioral events or activities of interest for transmission. We configured the software to detect dives and create per-dive summaries describing behavioral events associated with feeding activities in rorqual whales. We conducted a validation by proxy of the dive summary and event detection algorithms using field data from a medium-duration archival tag. We also conducted a simulation exercise to examine how the expected data recovery would vary under different dive behavior scenarios and compared those results to empirical values from field deployments of the RDW tag on blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) whales. The dive summary algorithm accurately reported dive depth and duration, while the accuracy of the lunge-feeding event detection algorithm was dependent on the precision of the accelerometer data that was used, with a predicted accuracy of 0.74 for correctly classifying feeding dives from 1/64-G precision data and 0.95 from 1-mG precision data. Simulated data recovery was lower with sparser transmission schedules, shorter mean dive durations, and lower rates of successfully received transmissions. Empirical data recovery was lower than expected from the simulation, suggesting the effect of additional factors, such as data gaps. By measuring key aspects of the per-dive behavior of large whales over multi-month timescales of movement, the RDW tags provide the ability to monitor previously unobservable behaviors across entire geographic ranges, extending the applications of satellite telemetry devices to new areas of whale physiology, behavior, ecology, and conservation. Understanding habitat use of elasmobranchs in pelagic environments is complicated due to the mobility of these large animals and their ability to move great distances in a three-dimensional environment. The Gulf of Mexico is a region where many highly migratory pelagic shark species occur, while in close proximity to coastal, anthropogenic activity including recreational and commercial fisheries. This study provides summary information on the vertical habitat use for a single male scalloped hammerhead and a single male bigeye thresher that were each caught and tagged with an archiving satellite tag. The scalloped hammerhead occupied shallow depths (<100 m) over the continental shelf during the 90 d deployment. The bigeye thresher exhibited strong patterns of diel vertical migrations by occupying depths below the thermocline (>350 m) during the day, then occupying shallower depths (50–100 m) during the night. By providing summary information, this note urges future research to provide scientific information on pelagic, highly migratory species for management efforts in the Gulf of Mexico region. Abstract Hormones are extensively known to be physiological mediators of energy mobilization and allow animals to adjust behavioral performance in response to their environment, especially within a foraging context. Few studies, however, have narrowed focus toward the consistency of hormonal patterns and their impact on individual foraging behavior. Describing these relationships can further our understanding of how individuals cope with heterogeneous environments and exploit different ecological niches. To address this, we measured between‐ and within‐individual variation of basal cortisol (CORT), thyroid hormone T3, and testosterone (TEST) levels in wild adult female Galápagos sea lions (Zalophus wollebaeki) and analyzed how these hormones may be associated with foraging strategies. In this marine predator, females exhibit one of three spatially and temporally distinct foraging patterns (i.e., “benthic,” “pelagic,” and “night” divers) within diverse habitat types. Night divers differentiated from other strategies by having lower T3 levels. Considering metabolic costs, night divers may represent an energetically conservative strategy with shorter dive durations, depths, and descent rates to exploit prey which migrate up the water column based on vertical diel patterns. Intriguingly, CORT and TEST levels were highest in benthic divers, a strategy characterized by congregating around limited, shallow seafloors to specialize on confined yet reliable prey. This pattern may reflect hormone‐mediated behavioral responses to specific risks in these habitats, such as high competition with conspecifics, prey predictability, or greater risks of predation. Overall, our study highlights the collective effects of hormonal and ecological variation on marine foraging. In doing so, we provide insights into how mechanistic constraints and environmental pressures may facilitate individual specialization in adaptive behavior in wild populations.

Efficient use of the energy budget is of fundamental importance for long-distance migrants, which must cope with seasonal energy demands and environmental conditions. Time-activity budgets can provide information on how animals balance energy use and acquisition over their annual cycle, and on the costs and benefits of different migratory strategies. Baleen whales, such as the fin whale, perform long migrations between feeding and breeding grounds. Although there are now a handful of studies describing the diving and foraging behavior of fin whales, most were carried out at their high-latitude foraging grounds, and very little is known about their behavior in wintering habitats or during migration. We analyzed time-depth recorder data to describe the diving behavior and activity patterns of fin whales in a migratory habitat. Using a hierarchical cluster analysis based on a set of dive variables, we identified six dive types. Four of these dive types (shallow exploratory, shallow active, deep exploratory and deep active) were likely associated to foraging. The other two comprised long non-active dives and dives of variable shape, which may represent resting, traveling or even vocalizing behavior. Shallow exploratory dives were the most frequent dive type (23%) and shallow active were the least frequent (5%). The two deepest dive types, deep active and exploratory, were predominantly carried out during the day, and night dives were significantly shallower than daylight dives, suggesting that fin whales tracked the vertical migration of prey. Whales spent 60% of their dive time engaged in dives associated with feeding and/or prey searching, suggesting they prioritized energy intake over energy conservation. Pelagic elasmobranchs are key elements of oceanic ecosystems and must be preserved if marine trophic networks are to be kept in balance. Yet, they face intense fishing pressure that has been threatening their populations worldwide. Ensuring proper conservation management of these taxa depends on a better understanding of the strategies they use to explore the pelagic realm and their contributions to trophic web structuring across the ocean column. This study aimed at examining relationships between vertical habitat use and trophic attributes among six sympatric pelagic elasmobranchs using satellite transmitting tags in the western equatorial South Atlantic Ocean. The vertical movements of 35 elasmobranch individuals were tracked during an overall total of 1911 days. Clear relationships between species’ feeding habits, maximum diving depths, and proportion of time spent either in epipelagic or in surface waters were evidenced by Bayesian generalized linear mixed models and multivariate analysis. Filter-feeders made most use of deep waters from the mesopelagic and bathypelagic and shifted their diving depths in phase with diel vertical migrations of the deep scattering layer, i.e., shallower during the night and deeper during the day. Specialists exhibited distinct diving patterns in epipelagic and mesopelagic waters across the diel period which are potentially indicative of habitat partitioning, whereas generalists were more surface-oriented but also explored deeper waters compared to specialists. The trophic level also seemed to influence elasmobranch maximum diving depths, which tended to become shallower as species’ trophic level increased. These results corroborate previous evidence of widespread vertical habitat partitioning among sympatric pelagic predators and depict a trophic-mediated structuring of the pelagic environment where top-down control may be exerted at different depths by distinct species. Further research is yet required to understand the role of elasmobranch vertical movements in structuring pelagic habitats as well as to guide ecosystem-based fisheries management aimed at reducing species susceptibility to fishing gear and at preserving the structure and functionality of marine trophic networks.

Abstract Implementation of effective conservation planning relies on a robust understanding of the spatiotemporal distribution of the target species. In the marine realm, this is even more challenging for species rarely seen at the sea surface due to their extreme diving behavior like the sperm whales. Our study aims at (a) investigating the seasonal movements, (b) predicting the potential distribution, and (c) assessing the diel vertical behavior of this species in the Mascarene Archipelago in the south‐west Indian Ocean. Using 21 satellite tracks of sperm whales and eight environmental predictors, 14 supervised machine learning algorithms were tested and compared to predict the whales' potential distribution during the wet and dry season, separately. Fourteen of the whales remained in close proximity to Mauritius, while a migratory pattern was evidenced with a synchronized departure for eight females that headed towards Rodrigues Island. The best performing algorithm was the random forest, showing a strong affinity of the whales for sea surface height during the wet season and for bottom temperature during the dry season. A more dispersed distribution was predicted during the wet season, whereas a more restricted distribution to Mauritius and Reunion waters was found during the dry season, probably related to the breeding period. A diel pattern was observed in the diving behavior, likely following the vertical migration of squids. The results of our study fill a knowledge gap regarding seasonal movements and habitat affinities of this vulnerable species, for which a regional IUCN assessment is still missing in the Indian Ocean. Our findings also confirm the great potential of machine learning algorithms in conservation planning and provide highly reproductible tools to support dynamic ocean management.

Fish behavior during the capture process affects the overall efficiency of survey vessels and gear, influencing selectivity and catchability, which in turn influences stock assessments. The effects of behavior on capture are typically investigated through experiments that use video or acoustic technologies to observe behavioral responses of fish to vessels and gear directly. While these approaches provide valuable information about fish behavior, their use is limited to observing the movement of fish inside a small observed area. In this proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate a novel application of bio-logging Pop-up Satellite Archival Tags (PSATs) equipped with accelerometer sensors to observe behavioral responses of free-swimming demersal fish to approaching bottom trawl fishing vessels and gear. By combining PSAT and fishing vessel geolocation data from the Vessel Monitoring System, we characterized diving and herding responses of three individual Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) at-liberty for 21–106 days to trawling fishing vessels. We found that fish descended as trawlers approached, presumably in response to noise generated by the fishing vessel and gear, which supports the previously untested hypothesis that Pacific cod dive in response to approaching fishing vessels and gear, similar to closely related gadids. Additionally, one 88 cm fish swam ahead of a trawl towed at 1.25 m·s−1 (i.e., 1.42 body lengths per second) for 55.6 minutes, covering a distance of 4.17 km before capture, which challenges previous assertions that Pacific cod are unlikely to outswim bottom trawl gear towed at typical towing speeds. Over the last two decades, satellite tagging of adult and sub-adult white sharks Carcharodon carcharias off the west coast of North America has revealed a predictable onshore-offshore migratory cycle. Our current understanding of the vertical movements exhibited by white sharks while in their coastal foraging phase in the California Current, however, remains limited. Here, we used recovered datasets from 31 archival satellite tags to quantify vertical habitat use. Tags were deployed on individuals between 2000 and 2018 and recorded depth and temperature data at continuous 1–120 s intervals before being recovered up to a year after deployments. Four satellite-tagged individuals were concurrently tagged with acoustic tags, providing precise location data when detected by acoustic receivers that allowed us to explore how reported vertical habitat use varied spatially. While in the coastal shelf waters, white sharks moved at a mean depth ± SD of 14.3 ± 4.0 m and occupied significantly deeper depths during the day than the night. High individual, temporal and spatial variation was evident in vertical movements, while consistent diel and lunar effects emphasized the importance of light-level driving vertical behavior around hunting sites. The vertical movement behaviors reported here provide knowledge of how white sharks may directly and indirectly interact with their mammalian prey in a dynamic three-dimensional system during their capital foraging phase. Temporal patterns in vertical behavior, for instance, indicated that surface waters during early morning hours are the riskiest place for prey. Combining these novel findings with higher-resolution biologging techniques in future studies will allow us to further contextualize fine-scale vertical movement behaviors of white sharks and examine the specific foraging events that could not yet be isolated in the tagging data.

Observational studies describe rough‐toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) actively foraging during the day on epipelagic species. Using data from depth‐transmitting satellite tags deployed on nine individuals off Kauaʻi, we investigated diving behavior and the effects of lunar phase and solar light levels on vertical movements. Overall, tagged rough‐toothed dolphins primarily used near‐surface waters, spending between 83.6% and 93.7% of their time in the top 30 m of the water column. When diving, grand mean, median, and maximum dive depths were 76.9 m, 67.5 m, and 399.5 m, although individuals were in water with depths from approximately 700–1,450 m. Dive rates varied by time of day, being lowest during the day and at dawn and highest at dusk and night. Dives were deepest (M = 133.7 m, SD = 52.6 m, median = 106.5 m) and longest (M = 4.0 min, SD = 0.4 min, median = 4.0 min) at dusk, suggesting dolphins were taking advantage of prey rising to the surface in response to reduced light levels. Lunar phase indirectly affected diving, with deeper and longer dives occurring with increasing illumination. The variations in dive behavior across solar and lunar cycles indicate diving patterns shift based on the distribution of prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Animals constantly test the borders of their own ecological niche and tend to expand their range, which is now additionally challenged by global climate change. Following human exploitation throughout the Southern Ocean in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, numbers of King Penguin breeding pairs have increased and former breeding sites have been re-colonized. Since 2010 a breeding colony became (re-)established at Bahía Inútil, Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Chile. The aims of this study were to study the foraging ecology of King Penguins at this new breeding site, which is characterized by a set of different environmental variables as it is located within the confined environment of the Magellan Strait, more than 300 km from the open ocean. During the course of this study, thirty-two birds were successfully equipped with external devices that recorded 206 foraging trips by breeding and non-breeding birds. With one exception, all birds foraged throughout the year exclusively in the Magellan Strait with the main foraging areas located within 100 km from the colony. The diving activities of 15 King Penguins were recorded during 59 foraging trips, the deepest dive was 160 m and the longest dive lasted 6.75 mins. Based on a representative subsample of 3000 dives, mean dive depth was 32 ± 34 m and mean dive duration 117 ± 84 s. Accordingly, foraging trip durations throughout the year were significantly shorter than those recorded for conspecifics elsewhere. In accordance with these changes in foraging behavior, stomach contents from seven birds showed a mix of fish and squid, with Falkland sprats Sprattus fuegensis as the main prey item present in all samples. The implications of these behavioral adaptations are discussed with regard to this unusual confined foraging environment and predicted changes in the performance of King Penguins breeding elsewhere following global change.

Understanding habitat use of elasmobranchs in pelagic environments is complicated due to the mobility of these large animals and their ability to move great distances in a three-dimensional environment. The Gulf of Mexico is a region where many highly migratory pelagic shark species occur, while in close proximity to coastal, anthropogenic activity including recreational and commercial fisheries. This study provides summary information on the vertical habitat use for a single male scalloped hammerhead and a single male bigeye thresher that were each caught and tagged with an archiving satellite tag. The scalloped hammerhead occupied shallow depths (350 m) during the day, then occupying shallower depths (50–100 m) during the night. By providing summary information, this note urges future research to provide scientific information on pelagic, highly migratory species for management efforts in the Gulf of Mexico region.

As highly mobile predators with extensive home ranges, some shark species often utilize a continuum of habitats across the continental shelf ranging from the surf zone to the open ocean. For many species, these cross-shelf distributions can change depending on ontogeny or seasonal conditions. Recent research has confirmed a white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) summer nursery off Long Island, New York; however, habitat characterization of this nursery has not yet been conducted nor has fine-scale analysis of vertical behavior. Between 2016 and 2019, 21 young-of-the-year and juvenile white sharks were fitted with satellite and acoustic tags to examine distribution and selection for a suite of oceanographic variables during their late summertime (i.e., August to October) residence in the New York Bight. Horizontal position estimates were used to extract a suite of environmental measurements via remote sensing platforms and were linked with vertical profiles to produce three-dimensional movements for a subset of individuals also fitted with pop-up satellite archival tags (n = 7). Sharks exhibited horizontal movements parallel to Long Island’s southern shoreline and coastal New Jersey, with distances from 0.1 to 131.5 km from shore. Log-likelihood chi-square analyses determined selection for waters with underlying bathymetry of 20–30 m, sea surface temperatures between 20.0 and 22.0°C, sea surface salinities between 31.0 and 32.0 ppt, and chlorophyll-a concentrations between 2.0 and 8.0 mg⋅m–3. Multiple individuals also traversed the mid- to outer shelf region after leaving the Montauk tagging area. Vertical depth profiles illustrated oscillations between the surface and 199 m of water, with an average swimming depth of 9.2 ± 8.9 m. Water column temperatures during these oscillations ranged between 7.9 and 26.2°C (mean = 19.5 ± 2.0°C) with several individuals traversing highly stratified regions presumably associated with a mid-shelf cold pool adjacent to the Hudson Shelf Valley. These results suggest young white sharks exhibit connectivity between the immediate shoreline and mid-continental shelf region, where they play important ecological roles as predators on a variety of species. Our study improves characterization of essential fish habitat for young white sharks and provides new insights into their reliance on this productive continental shelf ecosystem.

The porbeagle (Lamna nasus) is a large, highly migratory endothermic shark broadly distributed in the higher latitudes of the Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian Oceans. In the North Atlantic, the porbeagle has a long history of fisheries exploitation and current assessments indicate that this stock is severely overfished. Although much is known of the life history of this species, there is little fisheries-independent information about habitat preferences and ecology. To examine migratory routes, vertical behavior, and environmental associations in the western North Atlantic, we deployed pop-up satellite archival transmitting tags on 20 porbeagles in late November, 2006. The sharks, ten males and ten females ranging from 128 to 154 cm fork length, were tagged and released from a commercial longline fishing vessel on the northwestern edge of Georges Bank, about 150 km east of Cape Cod, MA. The tags were programmed to release in March (n = 7), July (n = 7), and November (n = 6) of 2007, and 17 (85%) successfully reported. Based on known and derived geopositions, the porbeagles exhibited broad seasonally-dependent horizontal and vertical movements ranging from minimum linear distances of 937 to 3,310 km and from the surface to 1,300 m, respectively. All of the sharks remained in the western North Atlantic from the Gulf of Maine, the Scotian Shelf, on George's Bank, and in the deep, oceanic waters off the continental shelf along the edge of, and within, the Gulf Stream. In general, the population appears to be shelf-oriented during the summer and early fall with more expansive offshore radiation in the winter and spring. Although sharks moved through temperatures ranging from 2 to 26°C, the bulk of their time (97%) was spent in 6-20°C. In the summer months, most of the sharks were associated with the continental shelf moving between the surface and the bottom and remaining < 200 m deep. In the late fall and winter months, the porbeagles moved into pelagic habitat and exhibited two behavioral patterns linked with the thermal features of the Gulf Stream: “non-divers” (n = 7) largely remained at epipelagic depths and “divers” (n = 10) made frequent dives into and remained at mesopelagic depths (200–1000 m). These data demonstrate that juvenile porbeagles are physiologically capable of exploiting the cool temperate waters of the western North Atlantic as well as the mesopelagic depths of the Gulf Stream, possibly allowing exploitation of prey not available to other predators.

Abstract From 2010 to 2015, satellite transmitters were deployed on 16 adult female Steller sea lions (AFSSLs; Eumetopias jubatus) in three regions of Alaska because there is limited information regarding the habitat use of this age class during winter and populations have yet to recover in western Alaska. Two approaches were used to assess how static (distance to shore, sea lion site, and continental shelf break, presence on/off the continental shelf, and bathymetric depth and slope), dynamic (proportion of daylight, fraction of lunar illumination, chlorophyll‐a, wind speed, sea surface height, eddy kinetic energy, and sea surface temperature), and other (region, distinct population segment, and season) covariates affected the habitat use of AFSSLs. Multimodel inference was first used to examine diving behaviors (mean and maximum dive depths, dive frequency) with respect to covariates using linear mixed‐effects models, whereas single model inference was used to examine kernel density estimates (KDEs) of individual monthly utilization distributions (n = 74) in western Alaska with respect to environmental covariates using generalized additive models. Additionally, weighted coefficients from these models were examined for the population as a whole, within each individual, between regions, and across monthly scales. Comparisons of foraging behaviors of AFSSLs over time and space revealed pronounced individual variability within overall broader patterns. Response variables of most models were related to various combinations of predictor variables, but distance to shore was the most influential variable across all models. As expected with a non‐migratory central place forager, frequency of diving and KDEs were greater on the shelf and near shore, though maximum dive depths increased with distance to shore. Interaction effects (proportion of day light*on/off shelf) observed for mean dive depths suggested AFSSLs were feeding on benthic species when in shelf waters near shore, whereas they were likely feeding on vertically migrating prey species while off‐shelf. Relationships regarding diving behaviors and KDEs of AFSSLs relative to dynamic oceanographic variables were not as prominent as those observed for static environmental variables, though some signals were apparent at different scales. Marine turtles often conduct extensive migrations from foraging to breeding habitats. Turtles may spend several months in these breeding habitats, while periodically taking brief excursions onto terrestrial environments to nest. Identification and protection of these breeding habitats over the duration of the reproductive season is therefore vital for the conservation of sea turtles. Here, we used satellite telemetry to investigate the internesting behavior of East Pacific green turtles from 2 nesting beaches: Nombre de Jesús and Playa Cabuyal, located 50 km apart on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. A total of 21 satellite transmitters were deployed at Nombre de Jesús (n = 8) between 2007 and 2009 and at Cabuyal (n = 13) between 2012 and 2015. We found that turtle movements and dive behaviors were notably different between the 2 beaches. Specifically, the turtles from Cabuyal engaged in deeper dives (10 ±3 m vs. 6.5 ±2 m [mean ±SD]), presumably because they had access to deeper waters, and had larger minimum convex polygon area (606.5 ± 1150.5 km2 vs. 16 ± 11 km2) than turtles from Nombre De Jesús. Turtles from Nombre de Jesús also engaged in shorter dives (6.68 ± 4.5 min), compared with Cabuyal, where a majority of dives lasted between 10 and 30 min (18.75 ± 5.6 min). Finally, turtles at Nombre de Jesús dove significantly deeper during the day compared with the night, a pattern that was not present at Cabuyal. We conclude that internesting behaviors can be different even between beaches within the same geographical area. As such, internesting habitat management plans should pay specific attention to potential site-specific variation in internesting behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of proximate (causation and development) and ultimate (evolution and survival function) causes of gregariousness is necessary to advance our knowledge of animal societies. Delphinids are among the most social taxa; however, fine-scale understanding of their intra-specific relationships is hindered by the need for underwater observations on individuals. We developed a non-invasive animal-borne camera system with the goal of examining influences on gregariousness in dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus). We analyzed video and diving records from 11 individual dusky dolphins off Kaikoura, New Zealand. We examined the influence of biologger attachment on dolphin behavior and tested hypotheses regarding the effects of physiology, predation, and inter-individual variation on conspecific interactions. Dolphins did not exhibit increased rates of descent or ascent in the minutes immediately following biologger attachment, indicating a lack of behavioral response. Respiration rate was positively related to dive depth and duration, suggesting that diving is energetically expensive for this species. Gregariousness was negatively related to dive depth providing evidence that the physiological constraints of diving are likely to limit social behavior. Calves were not observed more frequently in infant (vs. echelon) position with increasing depth, highlighting the likelihood of other anti-predation strategies (e.g., dilution effect) in mother-calf pairs. We found that gregariousness differed between individuals within similar social groups, suggesting the importance of collecting data at the individual level. The evidence presented herein suggests that the further development of animal-borne camera systems will yield further insight into the mechanisms underlying delphinid social behavior. Significance statement: Dolphins are highly social and thus excellent model species for examining the cause and function of gregariousness. However, their cryptic nature poses a challenge to collecting the fine-scale data at the individual level required to conduct rigorous hypothesis tests. We overcame this obstacle by deploying a non-invasive cutting-edge biologger on free-ranging dusky dolphins to collect information on diving behavior, physiology, gregariousness, and mother-calf strategies. Results indicate that diving is energetically expensive, even to relatively shallow depths, and these costs likely hinder gregariousness at depth. Individual differences in gregariousness were apparent and as expected in this fission-fusion society. Unexpectedly, mother-calf pairs appeared to utilize strategies other than spatial positioning to minimize predation risk. Recent revisions of the federal Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, vigorous implementation of the Endangered Species Act, and the enactment of the California Marine Life Management Act of 1998 have placed a new emphasis on restoring the health of coastal ecosystems and fisheries resources. Increases in many formerly depleted pinniped populations, coupled with declining fish resources, have intensified competition between humans and pinnipeds (Harvey 1987, Mate and Harvey 1987, Weise and Harvey 2005, MMC 2002). California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) compete with almost all commercial and recreational fisheries along the California coast by directly interacting with fisheries causing entanglement and damage to fishing gear and loss of catch (Beeson and Hanan 1996, NMFS 1997, Weise and Harvey 2005), and indirectly by competing for fisheries resources (Harvey 1987, Mate and Harvey 1987, Olesiuk 1993, Weise 2000).

Electronic tracking tags have revolutionized our understanding of broad-scale movements and habitat use of highly mobile marine animals, but a large gap in our knowledge still remains for a wide range of small species. Here, we report the extraordinary transequatorial postbreeding migrations of a small seabird, the sooty shearwater, obtained with miniature archival tags that log data for estimating. position, dive depth, and ambient temperature. Tracks (262 +/- 23 days) reveal that shearwaters fly across the entire Pacific Ocean in a figure-eight pattern while traveling 64,037 +/- 9,779 km roundtrip, the longest animal migration ever recorded electronically. Each shearwater made a prolonged stopover in one of three discrete regions off Japan, Alaska, or California before returning to New Zealand through a relatively narrow corridor in the central Pacific Ocean. Transit rates as high as 910 +/- 186 km(.)day(-1) were recorded, and shearwaters accessed prey resources in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere's most productive waters from the surface to 68.2 m depth. Our results indicate that sooty shearwaters integrate oceanic resources throughout the Pacific Basin on a yearly scale. Sooty shearwater populations today are declining, and because they operate on a global scale, they may serve as an important indicator of climate change and ocean health.

Abstract Background The foraging and diving behavior of waterfowl are affected by a number of important factors. Hence, learning more about these major factors is of great concern in order to protect endangered species. In this study, we verified the effect of sex, temperature, time and flock size on the diving behavior of the Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus). Methods The study was conducted by means of focal animal sampling in the Wuyuan section of the Poyang Lake watershed in Jiangxi Province, China from December 2015 to March 2016. We used one-way ANOVA and LSD tests to investigate the differences among these factors. Pearson correlations were used to test the relation between pause duration and the previous or subsequent dive duration. The relations between these factors and dive/pause duration are illustrated using Spearman correlations. Results Mean dive duration and mean time on the pause of males were significantly higher than those of females. With an increase in temperature, dive duration significantly increased. Along with the passage of time of year and daytime, dive duration significantly increased, while dive duration decreased significantly with the increase in flock size. Conclusions Sex, temperature, time and flock size have an effect on the diving behavior of the wintering Scaly-sided Merganser. The difference of diving behavior between males and females is related to differences in body mass. The difference of diving behavior among various temperatures and time periods may be related to a low minimum rate of oxygen consumption, while the difference among various flock sizes may be caused by rising intraspecific competition.

Dive data collected from archival and satellite tags can provide valuable information on foraging activity via the characterization of movement patterns (e.g., wiggles, hunting time). However, a lack of validation limits interpretation of what these metrics truly represent in terms of behavior and how predators interact with prey. Head-mounted accelerometers have proven to be effective for detecting prey catch attempt (PrCA) behaviors, and thus can provide a more direct measure of foraging activity. However, device retrieval is typically required to access the high-resolution data they record, restricting use to animals returning to predictable locations. In this study, we present and validate data obtained from newly developed satellite-relay data tags, capable of remotely transmitting summaries of tri-axial accelerometer measurements. We then use these summaries to assess foraging metrics generated from dive data only. Tags were deployed on four female Weddell seals in November 2014 at Dumont d'Urville, and successfully acquired data over ~2 months. Retrieved archival data for one individual, and transmitted data for four individuals were used to (1) compare and validate abstracted accelerometer transmissions against outputs from established processing procedures, and (2) assess the validity of previously developed dive foraging indices, calculated solely from time-depth measurements. We found transmitted estimates of PrCA behaviors were generally comparable to those obtained from archival processing, although a small but consistent over-estimation was noted. Following this, dive foraging segments were identified either from (1) sinuosity in the trajectories of high-resolution depth archives, or (2) vertical speeds between low resolution transmissions of key depth inflection points along a dive profile. In both cases, more than 93% of the estimated PrCA behaviors (from either abstracted transmissions or archival processing) fell into inferred dive foraging segments (i.e., “hunting” segments), suggesting the two methods provide a reliable indicator of foraging effort. The validation of transmitted acceleration data and foraging indices derived from time-depth recordings for Weddell seals offers new avenues for the study of foraging activity and dive energetics. This is especially pertinent for species from which tag retrieval is challenging, but also for the post-processing of the numerous low-resolution dive datasets already available.

Air-breathing marine animals, such as seals and seabirds, undertake a special form of central-place foraging as they must obtain their food at depth yet return to the surface to breathe. While telemetry technologies have advanced our understanding of the foraging behavior and physiology of these marine predators, the proximate and ultimate influences controlling the diving behavior of individuals are still poorly understood. Over time, a wide variety of analytical approaches have been developed for dive data obtained via telemetry, making comparative studies and syntheses difficult even amongst closely-related species. Here we review publications using dive telemetry for 24 species (marine mammals and seabirds) in the Southern Ocean in the last decade (2006–2016). We determine the key questions asked, and examine how through the deployment of data loggers these questions are able to be answered. As part of this process we describe the measured and derived dive variables that have been used to make inferences about diving behavior, foraging, and physiology. Adopting a question-driven orientation highlights the benefits of a standardized approach for comparative analyses and the development of models. Ultimately, this should promote robust treatment of increasingly complex data streams, improved alignment across diverse research groups, and also pave the way for more integrative multi-species meta-analyses. Finally, we discuss key emergent areas in which dive telemetry data are being upscaled and more quantitatively integrated with movement and demographic information to link to population level consequences.

Successful foraging of marine predators depends on environmental conditions, which also influence prey availability. Neutral or negative El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation ocean conditions during the summer of 2013 and strongly positive conditions during the summer of 2015 in the northern California Current System provided a case study to evaluate a marine predator's response to anomalously warm conditions. We used satellite transmitters with saltwater switches to track movements and estimate dive behavior among non-breeding common murres (Uria aalge) off Oregon prior to and during a marine heatwave. We quantified differences in space-use between years, applied linear mixed models to determine environmental influences (e.g. sea surface temperature, surface salinity, chlorophyll a , ocean depth, and calendar date) on dive frequency and dive duration, and contrasted dive activity between time of day, year, and sexes. The majority of birds dispersed away from capture locations, which were situated near the southern range limit of their population. In both years, murres used the Salish Sea and the Columbia River plume; however, murres spent more time foraging in the Columbia River plume and in continental slope habitat during the marine heatwave of 2015. During 2015, dive frequency was reduced, and dive durations were almost twice as long during daytime indicating deeper or more dispersed prey. Increased dive frequency was positively associated with temperature, chlorophyll a , and crepuscular periods. Cluster analysis of dive activity and the top-ranked predictive dive duration model revealed associations between longer-duration dives and decreased dive frequency, marine slope habitat, and cooler ocean temperatures. Murres were relatively inactive throughout the night and we found no sex differences in dive activity. Changes in common murre foraging tactics were associated with ocean warming and revealed selectivity in spatial and temporal use of foraging habitats. Productive marine features including the Columbia River plume provided refuge for murres during apparently poor ocean conditions associated with the marine heatwave. Identifying refuge areas used by highly mobile species experiencing varying ocean conditions is critical for adaptive marine spatial planning that can accommodate a changing ocean climate. • Failed and non-breeding murres dispersed broadly from capture sites and colonies. • River plumes provided foraging refugia for murres during a marine heatwave. • Murres used more diverse foraging habitats during favorable ocean conditions. • Dive rate increased and duration decreased with water temperature and chlorophyll a. • Dives were frequent during crepuscular hours, infrequent at night, and longest during day. Diving optimality models predict air breathers to routinely dive within aerobic limits, but predator avoidance dives may be an exception. Lengthening submergence times during a predation threat may enhance survival probability, and we therefore hypothesized that predator avoidance dives in juvenile estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) would be partially anaerobically fueled. We also predicted that reliance on anaerobic metabolism would increase at elevated temperatures to offset the faster depletion of body oxygen stores. Crocodiles were maintained at 287 and 347C for 60 d and subsequently underwent simulated predator avoidance dive trials at two test temperatures (287 and 347C). Blood was sampled immediately on surfacing to measure plasma lactate concentrations relative to nondiving (control) values. Aerobic dive limits (cADL; min) were also calculated using known body mass and oxygen storage relationships and rates of diving oxygen consumption and compared with observed dive durations. Postdive plasma lactate levels were elevated beyond resting levels at both test temperatures, indicating that aerobic thresholds were surpassed during simulated predator avoidance dives. Similarly, ≥90% of dive durations exceeded cADLs at both test temperatures. Postdive plasma lactate concentrations were independent of water temperature and thermal acclimation treatment. Together, these findings suggest that reliance on anaerobiosis during simulated predator avoidance dives is important regardless of temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
