Abstract : The so-called Golden Mass Relation provides a testable correlation between charged-lepton and down-type quark masses, that arises in certain flavor models that do not rely on Grand Unification. Such models typically involve broken family symmetries. In this work, we demonstrate that realistic fermion mass relations can emerge naturally in modular invariant models, without relying on ad hoc flavon alignments. We provide a model-independent derivation of a class of mass relations that are experimentally testable. These relations are determined by both the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the specific finite modular group and the expansion coefficients of its modular forms, thus offering potential probes of modular invariant models. As a detailed example, we present a set of viable mass relations based on the Γ4 ≅ S4 symmetry, which have calculable deviations from the usual Golden Mass Relation.

In this article, we study a time splitting Fourier pseudo‐spectral (TSFP) method for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with wave operator (NLSW). The nonlinear strength of the NLSW is characterized by ε∈(0,1]$$ \varepsilon \in \left(0,1\right] $$. Specifically, we propose a coupled system which is equivalent to the NLSW and then apply the TSFP method to this system. As a geometric advantage, the TSFP method has time symmetry and conserves the discrete mass. Rigorous convergence analysis is provided to establish improved error bounds at O(hm+ε2pτ2)$$ O\left({h}^m+{\varepsilon}^{2p}{\tau}^2\right) $$ up to the long‐time at O(1/ε2p)$$ O\left(1/{\varepsilon}^{2p}\right) $$ where m$$ m $$ depends on the smoothness of the solution. Compared with the error bounds O(hm+τ2)$$ O\left({h}^m+{\tau}^2\right) $$ obtained by traditional analysis, our error bounds are greatly improved, especially when the problem presents weak nonlinearity, i.e. 0<ε≪1$$ 0<\varepsilon \ll 1 $$. In error analysis, combining with classical numerical analysis tools, we adopt the regularity compensation oscillation (RCO) technique to study the error accumulation process in detail and then establish the improved error bounds. Topologically ordered phases of matter elude Landau's symmetry-breaking theory, featuring a variety of intriguing properties such as long-range entanglement and intrinsic robustness against local perturbations. Their extension to periodically driven systems gives rise to exotic new phenomena that are forbidden in thermal equilibrium. Here, we report the observation of signatures of such a phenomenon—a prethermal topologically ordered time crystal—with programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a square lattice. By periodically driving the superconducting qubits with a surface code Hamiltonian, we observe discrete time-translation symmetry breaking dynamics that is only manifested in the subharmonic temporal response of nonlocal logical operators. We further connect the observed dynamics to the underlying topological order by measuring a nonzero topological entanglement entropy and studying its subsequent dynamics. Our results demonstrate the potential to explore exotic topologically ordered nonequilibrium phases of matter with noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors. Recently, there have been proposals to extend the concept of time crystals to topological order. Here the authors observe a prethermal topologically ordered time crystal on a superconducting quantum processor, where discrete time-translation symmetry breaking manifests for nonlocal rather than local observables. We use tensor-network methods and high-order linked-cluster expansions to explore the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field for general spin S values. Tensor network calculations for the pure Kitaev model confirm the absence of fluxes and spin-spin correlations beyond nearest neighbors, while revealing discrete orientational symmetry breaking for S ∈ 1, 3/2, 2, consistent with the semiclassical limit. An intermediate region between Kitaev phases and the high-field polarized phase is identified for all considered spin values, showing a sequence of potential phases characterized by distinct local magnetization patterns while the total magnetization increases smoothly as a function of the field. Linked-cluster expansions for the high-field zero-momentum gap and spectral weight indicate a quantum critical breakdown of the polarized phase, suggesting exotic physics at intermediate Kitaev couplings. The antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Kitaev model is known to have an intermediate phase under a magnetic field before transitioning to a fully polarized state. However, the nature of this phase for higher spins remained unclear. This paper explores the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field using tensor-network methods and high-order linked cluster expansions, uncovering an intermediate phase with distinct local magnetization patterns across different spin values. We review a number of methods to prove nonintegrability of Hamiltonian systems and focus on 3 Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) systems listing the known results for the prominent resonances. Associated with the Hamiltonian systems are the averaged-normal forms that provide us with geometric insight, approximations of orbits and measures of chaos. Symmetries do change the qualitative and quantitative pictures; we illustrate this for the 1:2:1 resonance with discrete symmetry in the 1st and 3rd DoF. In this case, the averaged-normal form is still nonintegrable, but it becomes integrable when adding discrete symmetry in all DoF. Apart from the short-periodic solutions obtained by averaging, we find many periodic solutions. There is numerical evidence of the presence of Šilnikov bifurcation which clarifies the presence of nonintegrability phenomena qualitatively and quantitatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parametric spin wave excitation allows studying a variety of nonlinear phenomena, such as magnon scattering. In patterned micro- and nanostructures, the magnon spectra is discrete and translational symmetry is broken, which means allowable scattering channels differ from those in continuous films. An example is non-degenerate scattering by which high-power transverse field pumping creates two magnons with distinct frequencies around half the pumping frequency. Through micromagnetics simulations, we show under certain conditions that combining two pumping frequencies generates new magnon modes through a process of stimulated magnon scattering. Many deployable structures in nature, as well as human-made mechanisms, preserve symmetry as their configurations evolve. Examples in nature include blooming flowers, dilation of the iris within the human eye, viral capsid maturation and molecular and bacterial motors. Engineered examples include opening umbrellas, elongating scissor jacks, variable apertures in cameras, expanding Hoberman spheres and some kinds of morphing origami structures. In these cases, the structures either preserve a discrete symmetry group or are described as an evolution from one discrete symmetry group to another of the same type as the structure deploys. Likewise, elastic metamaterials built from lattice structures can also preserve symmetry type while passively deforming and changing lattice parameters. A mathematical formulation of such transitions/deployments is articulated here. It is shown that if X is Euclidean space, G is a continuous group of motions of Euclidean space and Γ is the type of the discrete subgroup of G describing the symmetries of the deploying structure, then the symmetry of the evolving structure can be described by time-dependent subgroups of G of the form Γαt:=αtΓαt−1 , where αt is a time-dependent affine transformation. Then, instead of considering the whole structure in X , a 'sector' of it that lives in the orbit space Γαt\X can be considered at each instant in time, and instead of considering all motions in G , only representatives from right cosets in the space Γαt\G need to be considered. We consider the discrete Z 4 symmetry i ^ , which takes place in the scenario of quantum gravity where the gravitational tetrads emerge as the order parameter—the vacuum expectation value of the bilinear combination of fermionic operators. Under this symmetry operation, i ^ , the emerging tetrads are multiplied by the imaginary unit, i ^ e μ a = − i e μ a . The existence of such symmetry and the spontaneous breaking of this symmetry are also supported by the consideration of the symmetry breaking scheme in the topological superfluid 3He-B. The order parameter in 3He-B is also the bilinear combination of the fermionic operators. This order parameter is the analog of the tetrad field, but it has complex values. The i ^ -symmetry operation changes the phase of the complex order parameter by π / 2 , which corresponds to the Z 4 discrete symmetry in quantum gravity. We also considered the alternative scenario of the breaking of this Z 4 symmetry, in which the i ^ -operation changes sign of the scalar curvature, i ^ R = − R , and thus the Einstein–Hilbert action violates the i ^ -symmetry. In the alternative scenario of symmetry breaking, the gravitational coupling K = 1 / 16 π G plays the role of the order parameter, which changes sign under i ^ -transformation. Abstract We study physical implications of general CP symmetry including CP-like symmetry. Various scattering amplitudes of CP asymmetry are calculated in CP-like symmetric models. We explicitly show that the CP-like transformation leads to a specific relation between different CP asymmetries. The resultant relation is similar to the one obtained in GUT baryogenesis and sphaleron processes, where we also obtain a required condition for generating particle number asymmetry in CP-like symmetric models. In addition, we propose a generalization of a CP-like transformation for continuous symmetry groups. Since the CP transformation is an outer automorphism, which depends on the internal symmetry group, it turns out that the physical CP and CP-like symmetries can be mutually converted through the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the internal symmetry. We investigate properties of physical CP asymmetry in both CP and CP-like symmetric phases, and find that the spontaneous CP violation and restoration can be observed even in models with continuous groups. We demonstrate that CP-like symmetric models with continuous Lie groups can be naturally realized in physical CP symmetric models through the SSB.

Abstract Symmetries and their anomalies are powerful tools for understanding quantum systems. However, realistic systems are often subject to disorders, dissipation and decoherence. In many circumstances, symmetries are not exact but only on average. This work investigates the constraints on mixed states resulting from non-commuting average symmetries. We will focus on the cases where the commutation relations of the average symmetry generators are violated by nontrivial phases, and call such average symmetry anomalous. We show that anomalous average symmetry implies degeneracy in the density matrix eigenvalues, and present several lattice examples with average symmetries, including XY chain, Heisenberg chain, and deformed toric code models. In certain cases, the results can be further extended to reduced density matrices, leading to a new lower bound on the entanglement entropy. We discuss several applications in the contexts of many body localization, quantum channels, entanglement phase transitions and also derive new constraints on the Lindbladian evolution of open quantum systems.

Abstract Recently, it was shown that modular symmetry may solve the strong CP problem without axions, by producing a vanishing QCD angle while generating a large quark CP violation phase. We extend this framework to finite modular groups, systematically identifying the allowed mass textures. We find quark fields must furnish 1D representations and scan the minimal model landscape.

Abstract We study the interplay of duality and stacking of bosonic and fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases in one spatial dimension. In general the classifications of bosonic and fermionic phases have different group structures under the operation of stacking, but we argue that they are often isomorphic and give an explicit isomorphism when it exists. This occurs for all unitary symmetry groups and many groups with antiunitary symmetries, which we characterize. We find that this isomorphism is typically not implemented by the Jordan-Wigner transformation, nor is it a consequence of any other duality transformation that falls within the framework of topological holography. Along the way to this conclusion, we recover the fermionic stacking rule in terms of G $$ \mathcal{G} $$ -pin partition functions, give a gauge-invariant characterization of the twisted group cohomology invariant, and state a procedure for stacking gapped phases in the formalism of symmetry topological field theory.

Abstract Only four T 2 / ℤ K $$ {\mathbbm{T}}^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_K $$ orbifold building blocks are admissible in heterotic string compactifications. We investigate the flavor properties of all of these building blocks. In each case, we identify the traditional and modular flavor symmetries, and determine the corresponding representations and (fractional) modular weights of the available massless matter states. The resulting finite flavor symmetries include Abelian and non-Abelian traditional symmetries, discrete R symmetries, as well as the double-covered finite modular groups (S 3 × S 3) ⋊ ℤ 4, T ′, 2D 3 and S 3 × T ′. Our findings provide restrictions for bottom-up model building with consistent ultraviolet embeddings.

Abstract We study a relic density of the “flavino” dark matter in modified Altarelli and Feruglio A 4 model which is respecting the SU(2) L × A 4 × Z 3 × U(1) R symmetry. We calculate the Lagrangian from the superpotential in the model. In estimating the relic density, we consider the relevant interactions from the Lagrangian that realize the vacuum expectation value alignments and charged lepton masses where we assume that the supersymmetry breaking effects are small for “flavon” sector. As a result, we find the degenerate masses between the lightest “flavon” and “flavino”, and only two parameters in the potential determines the relic density. Then the allowed parameter space of these parameters are estimated from the relic density calculation taking a constraint from lepton flavor violation into account. We also briefly discuss other dark matter physics such as the direct detection, indirect detection, and collider search.

We consider the classical vacua of the Weinberg–Salam (WS) model of electroweak forces. These are no-particle, static solutions to the WS equations minimizing the WS energy locally. We study the WS vacuum solutions exhibiting a non-vanishing average magnetic field of strength b and prove that (i) there is a magnetic field threshold b ∗ such that for b < b ∗ , the vacua are translationally invariant (and the magnetic field is constant), while, for b > b ∗ , they are not, (ii) for b > b ∗ , there are non-translationally invariant solutions with lower energy per unit volume and with the discrete translational symmetry of a 2D lattice in the plane transversal to b, and (iii) the lattice minimizing the energy per unit volume approaches the hexagonal one as the magnetic field strength approaches the threshold b ∗ . In the absence of particles, the Weinberg–Salam model reduces to the Yang–Mills–Higgs (YMH) equations for the gauge group U(2). In this paper, we study a generalized Biot–Savart law for suitable velocity that possibly diverges at infinity, and then show its application to the 2D general incompressible inviscid fluids. We first prove the generalized Biot–Savart law for the active scalar equations in a discrete rotational symmetry framework, which allows the velocity grow almost linearly at infinity. Based on this, we further obtain a unique global symmetric solution to Euler equation under the Yudovich type regularity. Additionally, we investigate the local well-posedness for the Boussnesq equation, SQG equation, and especially for the IPM equation which enjoys particular symmetric property in our setting. Abstract We formulate general conditions under which the strong CP problem is solved by spontaneous CP violation. Quark-mass matrix elements are polynomials in the CP-breaking order parameters, engineered such that their determinant is a real constant. This scheme permits only a limited number of textures. These conditions can be realized in supersymmetric theories with CP as an anomaly-free local flavor symmetry, suggesting a unified solution to the strong CP problem and the flavor puzzle. Our solution can be implemented using either modular invariance or a local U(1) symmetry. We present modular-invariant realizations where matter fields are assigned small modular weights ±2 (±1), utilising higher levels N = 2 (N = 3). Heavy quarks are in general not required, but their presence allows for models where colored particles fill non-singlet representations of the flavor group.

Abstract Detection of parity P $$ \left(\mathcal{P}\right) $$ and time-reversal T $$ \left(\mathcal{T}\right) $$ symmetry-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) within currently achievable resolution would evidence physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Via the CPT $$ \left(\mathcal{CPT}\right) $$ -theorem, which includes charge conjugation C $$ \left(\mathcal{C}\right) $$ , such low-energy searches complement high-energy physics experiments that probe CP $$ \left(\mathcal{CP}\right) $$ -violation up to the TeV scale. Heavy-elemental atoms and molecules are considered to be among the most promising candidates for a first direct detection of P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -violation due to enhancement effects that increase steeply with increasing nuclear charge number Z. However, different P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -odd sources on the subatomic level can contribute to molecular or atomic EDMs, which are target of measurements, and this complicates obtaining rigorous bounds on P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -violation on a fundamental level. Consequently, several experiments of complementary sensitivity to these individual P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -odd sources are required for this purpose. Herein, a simply-applicable qualitative model is developed for global analysis of the P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -odd parameter space from an electronic-structure theory perspective. Rules of thumb are derived for the choice of atoms and molecules in terms of their angular momenta and nuclear charge number. Contrary to naive expectations from Z-scaling laws, it is demonstrated that medium-heavy molecules with Z ≤ 54 can be of great value to tighten global bounds on P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -violating parameters, in particular, if the number of complementary experiments increases. The model is confirmed by explicit density functional theory calculations of all relevant P $$ \mathcal{P} $$ , T $$ \mathcal{T} $$ -odd electronic structure parameters in systems that were used in past experiments or are of current interest for future experiments, respectively: the atoms Xe, Cs, Yb, Hg, Tl, Ra, Fr and the molecules CaOH, SrOH, YO, CdH, BaF, YbF, YbOH, HfF+, WC, TlF, PbO, RaF, ThO, ThF+ and PaF3+.

Abstract Embedding symmetries in the architectures of deep neural networks can improve classification and network convergence in the context of jet substructure. These results hint at the existence of symmetries in jet energy depositions, such as rotational symmetry, arising from the physical features of the underlying processes. We introduce new jet observables, Jet Rotational Metrics (JRMs), which provide insights into the substructure of jets by comparing them to jets with perfect discrete rotational symmetry. We show that JRMs are formidable jet features, achieving good classification scores when used as inputs to deep neural networks. We also show that when used in combination with other jet observables, like N-subjettiness and EFPs, our features increase classification performance. The results suggest that JRMs may capture information not efficiently captured by the other observables, motivating the design of future jet observables for learning the underlying symmetries in the physical processes.

Abstract This work studies domain walls between chirally-separated vacua in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on ℝ3 × 𝕊1 in the semiclassical limit. For all gauge groups we explicitly find the electric fluxes of all BPS domain walls and fully characterize the representation that they form under the global symmetry of SYM. We compute the characters of these representations formed by the semiclassical domain walls. We also compute these characters for the worldvolume TQFTs appearing in the literature for SU(N) and Sp(N) gauge groups. We find complete agreement between the two computations, providing thus a dynamical test of the proposed worldvolume TQFTs. We also propose a new worldvolume TQFT for E 6 domain walls, subjecting it to the same tests. Finally, we study deconfinement of quarks on domain walls for all gauge groups. We show that for all gauge groups confining strings (stable in the abelianized regime) can end on domain walls, regardless of whether or not the group has a center.

Abstract The Hilbert spaces of matrix quantum mechanical systems with N × N matrix degrees of freedom X have been analysed recently in terms of S N symmetric group elements U acting as X → UXU T . Solvable models have been constructed uncovering partition algebras as hidden symmetries of these systems. The solvable models include an 11-dimensional space of matrix harmonic oscillators, the simplest of which is the standard matrix harmonic oscillator with U(N) symmetry. The permutation symmetry is realised as gauge symmetry in a path integral formulation in a companion paper. With the simplest matrix oscillator Hamiltonian subject to gauge permutation symmetry, we use the known result for the micro-canonical partition function to derive the canonical partition function. It is expressed as a sum over partitions of N of products of factors which depend on elementary number-theoretic properties of the partitions, notably the least common multiples and greatest common divisors of pairs of parts appearing in the partition. This formula is recovered using the Molien-Weyl formula, which we review for convenience. The Molien-Weyl formula is then used to generalise the formula for the canonical partition function to the 11-parameter permutation invariant matrix harmonic oscillator.

Abstract Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have nontrivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We check the validity of our proposal also against a top-down holographic realization of the same class of theories.

Abstract We point out that the accidental U(1) B−L symmetry can arise from a finite modular symmetry Γ N in the type-I seesaw. The finite modular symmetry is spontaneously broken in such a way that the residual ℤ N T $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_N^T $$ discrete symmetry, associated with the T-transformation which shifts the modulus τ → τ + 1, remains unbroken. This discrete ℤ N T $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_N^T $$ symmetry mimics U(1) B−L , and hence the majoron appears as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of U(1) B−L . Without introducing additional interactions, the modulus τ can be stabilized by the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) potential given by the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrinos. We study cosmological implications of the majoron, with particular interests in the dark matter and dark radiation, where the latter may alleviate the Hubble tension. We also find that the CW potential can have a wide range of nearly exponential shape which prevents τ from overshooting, and makes the amount of dark radiation not too large.

Abstract We consider the topological defect lines commuting with the spectral flow and the N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = (4, 4) superconformal symmetry in two dimensional non-linear sigma models on K3. By studying their fusion with boundary states, we derive a number of general results for the category of such defects. We argue that while for certain K3 models infinitely many simple defects, and even a continuum, can occur, at generic points in the moduli space the category is actually trivial, i.e. it is generated by the identity defect. Furthermore, we show that if a K3 model is at the attractor point for some BPS configuration of D-branes, then all topological defects have integral quantum dimension. We also conjecture that a continuum of topological defects arises if and only if the K3 model is a (possibly generalized) orbifold of a torus model. Finally, we test our general results in a couple of examples, where we provide a partial classification of the topological defects.

Abstract We consider ℤ N orbifolds of Type-II compactifications to four and six dimensions on several Calabi-Yau manifolds in the orbifold limit with the aim to compute the entanglement entropy. The spectrum can contain tachyons in the doubly-twisted sectors which can lead to new infrared divergences for the partition function that are not present in the orbifolds of the uncompactified ten-dimensional theory. We show that all tachyonic contributions in these models admit a resummation and analytic continuation that yields finite entropy in the physical region 0 < N ≤ 1 just as in ten dimensions.

Abstract A new kind of quantum Calogero model is proposed, based on a hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. We formulate nonrelativistic quantum mechanics on the Minkowskian root space of the simplest rank-3 hyperbolic Lie algebra AE 3 with an inverse-square potential given by its real roots and reduce it to the unit future hyperboloid. By stereographic projection this defines a quantum mechanics on the Poincaré disk with a unique potential. Since the Weyl group of AE 3 is a ℤ2 extension of the modular group PSL(2,ℤ), the model is naturally formulated on the complex upper half plane, and its potential is a real modular function. We present and illustrate the relevant features of AE 3, give some approximations to the potential and rewrite it as an (almost everywhere convergent) Poincaré series. The standard Dunkl operators are constructed and investigated on Minkowski space and on the hyperboloid. In the former case we find that their commutativity is obstructed by rank-2 subgroups of hyperbolic type (the simplest one given by the Fibonacci sequence), casting doubt on the integrability of the model. An appendix with Don Zagier investigates the computability of the potential. We foresee applications to cosmological billards and to quantum chaos.

Abstract We compute the exact one-loop partition function of ℤ N orbifolds of Euclidean BTZ black hole with the aim to compute the entanglement entropy of the black hole horizon in string theory as a function of the mass and spin of the black hole and the AdS3 radius. We analyze the tachyonic contribution to the modular integrand for the partition function known for odd integers N > 1 and show that it admits an analytic continuation resulting in a finite answer for the modular integral in the physical region 0 < N ≤ 1. We discuss the flat space limit and the relevance of this computation for quantum gravity near black hole horizons and holography in relation to the thermal entropy.

Abstract We reexamine the question of quantum consistency of supergravities in eight dimensions. Theories with 16 supercharges suffer from the anomalies under the action of its discrete modular groups. In minimally supersymmetric theory coupled to Yang-Mills multiples of rank l with the moduli space given by SO(2, l)/(U(1) × SO(l)), the existence of a counterterm together with the requirement that its poles and zeros correspond to the gauge symmetry enhancement imposes nontrivial constraints on the lattice. The counterterms needed for anomaly cancellation for all cases, that are believed to lead to consistent theories of quantum gravity (l = 2, 10, 18), are discussed.

Abstract Gauging a discrete 0-form symmetry of a QFT is a procedure that changes the global form of the gauge group but not its perturbative dynamics. In this work, we study the Seiberg-Witten solution of theories resulting from the gauging of charge conjugation in 4d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 theories with SU(N) gauge group and fundamental hypermultiplets. The basic idea of our procedure is to identify the ℤ2 action at the level of the SW curve and perform the quotient, and it should also be applicable to non-lagrangian theories. We study dynamical aspects of these theories such as their moduli space singularities and the corresponding physics; in particular, we explore the complex structure singularity arising from the quotient procedure. We also discuss some implications of our work in regards to three problems: the geometric classification of 4d SCFTs, the study of non-invertible symmetries from the SW geometry, and the String Theory engineering of theories with disconnected gauge groups.

Abstract In recent years, the concept of global symmetry has generalized considerably. Two dramatic examples of this generalization are the exotic symmetries that govern theories with fractons and non-invertible symmetries, which do not fuse according to a group law. Only recently has the interplay between these two been examined. In this paper, we provide further examples of the interplay in the XY plaquette model, XY cube model, 1+1 d theory with global dipole symmetry, and the 2+1 d Lifshitz theory. They are analogs of the duality symmetries in 2d CTFs and are constructed by first gauging a finite subgroup of the momentum symmetry on half of spacetime and then performing a duality transformation. We analyze the fusion rules of the symmetries and find that they are condensation defects from an analog of higher gauging exotic symmetries. We also address their dependence on the UV cutoff when relevant.

The existence of thresholdless vortex solitons trapped at the core of disclination lattices that realize higher-order topological insulators is reported. The study demonstrates the interplay between nonlinearity and higher-order topology in these systems, as the vortex state in the disclination lattice bifurcates from its linear topological counterpart, while the position of its propagation constant within the bandgap and localization can be controlled by its power. It is shown that vortex solitons are characterized by strong field confinement at the disclination core due to their topological nature, leading to enhanced stability. Simultaneously, the global discrete rotational symmetry of the disclination lattice imposes restrictions on the maximal possible topological charge of such vortex solitons. The results illustrate the strong stabilizing action that topologically nontrivial structures may exert on excited soliton states, opening new prospects for soliton-related applications. The Hilbert spaces of matrix quantum mechanical systems with N × N matrix degrees of freedom X have been analysed recently in terms of SN symmetric group elements U acting as X → UXUT. Solvable models have been constructed uncovering partition algebras as hidden symmetries of these systems. The solvable models include an 11-dimensional space of matrix harmonic oscillators, the simplest of which is the standard matrix harmonic oscillator with U(N) symmetry. The permutation symmetry is realised as gauge symmetry in a path integral formulation in a companion paper. With the simplest matrix oscillator Hamiltonian subject to gauge permutation symmetry, we use the known result for the micro-canonical partition function to derive the canonical partition function. It is expressed as a sum over partitions of N of products of factors which depend on elementary number-theoretic properties of the partitions, notably the least common multiples and greatest common divisors of pairs of parts appearing in the partition. This formula is recovered using the Molien-Weyl formula, which we review for convenience. The Molien-Weyl formula is then used to generalise the formula for the canonical partition function to the 11-parameter permutation invariant matrix harmonic oscillator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We point out that the accidental U(1)B−L symmetry can arise from a finite modular symmetry ΓN in the type-I seesaw. The finite modular symmetry is spontaneously broken in such a way that the residual ℤ N T discrete symmetry, associated with the T-transformation which shifts the modulus τ → τ + 1, remains unbroken. This discrete ℤ N T symmetry mimics U(1)B−L, and hence the majoron appears as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of U(1)B−L. Without introducing additional interactions, the modulus τ can be stabilized by the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) potential given by the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrinos. We study cosmological implications of the majoron, with particular interests in the dark matter and dark radiation, where the latter may alleviate the Hubble tension. We also find that the CW potential can have a wide range of nearly exponential shape which prevents τ from overshooting, and makes the amount of dark radiation not too large. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have nontrivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We consider the topological defect lines commuting with the spectral flow and the N = (4, 4) superconformal symmetry in two dimensional non-linear sigma models on K3. By studying their fusion with boundary states, we derive a number of general results for the category of such defects. We argue that while for certain K3 models infinitely many simple defects, and even a continuum, can occur, at generic points in the moduli space the category is actually trivial, i.e. it is generated by the identity defect. Furthermore, we show that if a K3 model is at the attractor point for some BPS configuration of D-branes, then all topological defects have integral quantum dimension. We also conjecture that a continuum of topological defects arises if and only if the K3 model is a (possibly generalized) orbifold of a torus model. This work focuses on the study of natural convection in a flat porous microchannel with asymmetric heating. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the method of discrete symmetries was used to analyze the complete system of Navier–Stokes and energy equations in a two-dimensional approximation. Analytical solutions for velocity and temperature profiles have been derived based on symmetry analysis, taking into account boundary conditions such as slip and temperature jump at the channel walls. The effect of Grashof, Knudsen, Darcy, and Prandtl numbers on the flow characteristics in the microchannel and heat transfer coefficients was elucidated. At high Grashof numbers, an ascending flow near the hot wall and a descending flow near the cold wall arise. Increasing the Knudsen number leads to an increase in the velocity, temperature jump at the walls and a decrease in heat transfer coefficients. As the Darcy number increases, velocities amplify in both ascending and descending flows. The temperature jump at the hot wall grows up, while it remains unchanged at the cold wall. We consider ℤN orbifolds of Type-II compactifications to four and six dimensions on several Calabi-Yau manifolds in the orbifold limit with the aim to compute the entanglement entropy. The spectrum can contain tachyons in the doubly-twisted sectors which can lead to new infrared divergences for the partition function that are not present in the orbifolds of the uncompactified ten-dimensional theory. We show that all tachyonic contributions in these models admit a resummation and analytic continuation that yields finite entropy in the physical region 0 < N ≤ 1 just as in ten dimensions. A new kind of quantum Calogero model is proposed, based on a hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. We formulate nonrelativistic quantum mechanics on the Minkowskian root space of the simplest rank-3 hyperbolic Lie algebra AE3 with an inverse-square potential given by its real roots and reduce it to the unit future hyperboloid. By stereographic projection this defines a quantum mechanics on the Poincaré disk with a unique potential. Since the Weyl group of AE3 is a ℤ2 extension of the modular group PSL(2,ℤ), the model is naturally formulated on the complex upper half plane, and its potential is a real modular function. We present and illustrate the relevant features of AE3, give some approximations to the potential and rewrite it as an (almost everywhere convergent) Poincaré series. The standard Dunkl operators are constructed and investigated on Minkowski space and on the hyperboloid. In the former case we find that their commutativity is obstructed by rank-2 subgroups of hyperbolic type (the simplest one given by the Fibonacci sequence), casting doubt on the integrability of the model. We compute the exact one-loop partition function of ℤN orbifolds of Euclidean BTZ black hole with the aim to compute the entanglement entropy of the black hole horizon in string theory as a function of the mass and spin of the black hole and the AdS3 radius. We analyze the tachyonic contribution to the modular integrand for the partition function known for odd integers N > 1 and show that it admits an analytic continuation resulting in a finite answer for the modular integral in the physical region 0 < N ≤ 1. The coset construction is a tool for systematically building low energy effective actions for Nambu-Goldstone modes. This technique is typically used to compute time-ordered correlators appropriate for S-matrix computations for systems in their ground state. In this paper, we extend this technique to the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, which enables one to calculate a wider variety of correlators and applies also to systems in a mixed state. We focus our attention on internal symmetries and demonstrate that, after identifying the appropriate symmetry breaking pattern, Schwinger-Keldysh effective actions for Nambu-Goldstone modes can be constructed using the standard rules of the coset construction. Particular emphasis is placed on the thermal state and ensuring that correlators satisfy the KMS relation. We also discuss explicitly the power counting scheme underlying our effective actions. We comment on the similarities and differences between our approach and others that have previously appeared in the literature. In particular, our prescription does not require the introduction of additional "diffusive" symmetries and retains the full non-linear structure generated by the coset construction. We conclude with a series of explicit examples, including a computation of the finite-temperature two-point functions of conserved spin currents in non-relativistic paramagnets, antiferromagnets, and ferromagnets. Along the way, we also clarify the discrete symmetries that set antiferromagnets apart from ferromagnets, and point out that the dynamical KMS symmetry must be implemented in different ways in these two systems. Abstract This paper introduces two operations in quiver gauge theories. The first operation, collapse, takes a quiver with a permutation symmetry S n and gives a quiver with adjoint loops. The corresponding 3d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 Coulomb branches are related by an orbifold of S n . The second operation, multi-lacing, takes a quiver with n nodes connected by edges of multiplicity k and replaces them by n nodes of multiplicity qk. The corresponding Coulomb branch moduli spaces are related by an orbifold of type ℤ q n − 1 $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_q^{n-1} $$ . Collapse generalises known cases that appeared in the literature [1–3]. These two operations can be combined to generate new relations between moduli spaces that are constructed using the magnetic construction.

Abstract We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for order-2 CP (CP2) symmetry in N-Higgs-doublet potentials for N > 2. The conditions, which are formulated as relations between vectors that transform under the adjoint representation of SU(N) under a change of doublet basis, are representation theoretical in nature. Making use of Lie algebra and representation theory we devise an efficient, computable algorithm which may be applied to decide whether or not a given numerical potential is CP2 invariant.

Abstract We consider the evolution of quantum fields during inflation, and show that the total-energy singularities appearing in the perturbative expansion of the late-time Wavefunction of the Universe are purely real when the external states are massless scalars and massless gravitons. Our proof relies on the tree-level approximation, Bunch-Davies initial conditions, and exact scale invariance (IR-convergence), but without any assumptions on invariance under de Sitter boosts. We consider all n-point functions and allow for the exchange of additional states of any mass and integer spin. Our proof makes use of a decomposition of the inflationary bulk-bulk propagator of massive spinning fields which preserves UV-convergence and ensures that the time-ordered contributions are purely real after we rotate to Euclidean time. We use this reality property to show that the maximally-connected parts of wavefunction coefficients, from which total-energy singularities originate, are purely real. In a theory where all states are in the complementary series, this reality extends to the full wavefunction coefficient. We then use our reality theorem to show that parity-odd correlators (correlators that are mirror asymmetric) are factorised and do not diverge when the total-energy is conserved. We pay special attention to the parity-odd four-point function (trispectrum) of inflationary curvature perturbations and use our reality/factorisation theorems to show that this observable is factorised into a product of cubic diagrams thereby enabling us to derive exact shapes. We present examples of couplings between the inflaton and massive spin-1 and spin-2 fields, with the parity-violation in the trispectrum driven by Chern-Simons corrections to the spinning field two-point function, or from parity-violating cubic interactions which we build within the Effective Field Theory of Inflation. In addition, we present a first-of-its-kind example of a parity-violating trispectrum, generated at tree-level, that arises in a purely scalar theory where the inflaton mixes linearly with an additional massive scalar field.

Abstract In this work we study families of ℤ 2 orbifolds of toroidal conformal field theories based on both factorizable and non-factorizable target space tori. For these classes of theories, we analyze their moduli spaces, and compute their partition functions. Building on previous work, we express the calculated partition functions in terms of suitable Siegel-Narain theta functions that allow us to determine their ensemble averages. We express the derived averaged partition functions of the studied families of conformal field theories in a manifest modular invariant finite sum of products of real analytic Eisenstein series. We speculate on a tentative holographic three-dimensional dual bulk interpretations for the considered ℤ 2 orbifold classes of ensembles of conformal field theories.

Abstract We generalize the idea of symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT) for subsystem symmetry. We propose the 2-foliated BF theory with level N in (3 + 1)d as subsystem SymTFT for subsystem ℤ N symmetry in (2 + 1)d. Focusing on N = 2, we investigate various topological boundaries. The subsystem Kramers-Wannier and Jordan-Wigner dualities can be viewed as boundary transformations of the subsystem SymTFT and are included in a larger duality web from the subsystem SL(2, ℤ 2) symmetry of the bulk foliated BF theory. Finally, we construct the condensation defects and twist defects of S-transformation in the subsystem SL(2, ℤ 2), from which the fusion rule of subsystem non-invertible operators can be recovered.
