Rapid innovations in media technologies have ushered in diverse entertainment avenues, including politically oriented content, presenting both novel opportunities and societal challenges. This study delves into the implications of the burgeoning deepfake phenomenon, particularly focusing on audience interpretation and engagement with deepfake parodies, a quintessential example of "misinfotainment." Additionally, it examines the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) disclaimers on audience understanding and related consequences. To probe this, two experiments (N  =   2,808) were executed featuring parodied politicians adopting opposing viewpoints on the issue of climate change. U.S. participants were either exposed to deepfake videos prefaced with AI disclaimers or without. Results indicate that the inclusion of an AI disclaimer significantly influenced audience comprehension and their ability to recognize the parody. These factors were subsequently associated with enjoyment, discounting, and counterarguing, which in turn showed different relationships with policy support and sharing intentions. According to its own description, the biomedical meta-database PubMed exists "with the aim of improving health—both globally and personally." Unfortunately, PubMed contains an increasing amount of low-quality research that may detract from this goal. Currently, PubMed warns its users and protects itself from such problems with a disclaimer stating that the presence of any article, book, or document in PubMed does not imply an endorsement of, or concurrence with, its contents by the NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), or the U.S. Federal Government. However, we are critical of a "disclaimer-only" stance and encourage PubMed to take further action against low-quality research being found and indexed in its database, and thus available for use. To address this problem, we offer two lines of reasoning to argue that PubMed should not function merely as a passive index of health-related research. Instead, we first argue that only trustworthy published research is able to further PubMed's goal of health improvement. Secondly, on the basis of surveys, we argue that researchers place a high level of trust in articles that are referenced in this meta-database. We cannot expect any one set of actors to ensure trustworthy content on PubMed, which requires collective responsibility among authors, peer reviewers, editors, and indexers alike. Instead, we propose a curation-based model that incorporates three mechanisms of collaborative content curation: open expert feedback on indexed content, journal auditing, and constant transparent reassessment of indexed entities. In past articles we have reviewed critical lessons learned from various failed ERP implementations and outsourcing transactions. One of the common themes is the divergence between the representations made by technology vendor sales teams as to promised skills, expertise and delivery, and the actually provided skills, expertise and delivery. In turn, the analysis of the resulting lawsuits has emerged, in response to customer allegations of negligent misrepresentation and fraudulent misrepresentation, the vendor defences of puffery and opinion, statements of future intent, and contractual disclaimer. The article begins in this Part 1 by providing an overview of the law of misrepresentation, and then the common vendor defences of puffery and opinion, statements of future intent, and contractual disclaimers, in Canada (I) and in the United States (II). Part 2 will then complete the overview with a look at the European Union (III) and an assessment how these defences were raised by vendors in two recent ERP failure lawsuits (IV), before concluding with lessons learned for vendors and customers (V). The Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) issued the Sydney declaration on predatory or pseudo journals and publishers at their annual meeting in 2024. Predatory journals are defined as those that charge publication fees without providing robust peer review and editorial services. These journals can have a negative impact on clinical practice, health, and careers. The declaration calls for member states, governments, and stakeholders to implement procedures for identifying and dealing with predatory journals and publishers. How do ideology, foreign policy, and the international system interact with and shape one another? This paper examines the relationship between ideology and foreign policy in the United Kingdom, India, and China and finds three common threads. First, while ideology likely affects foreign policy formulation, the causal mechanisms involved are complex and not necessarily uniform across states. Second, destabilizing forces like populism are increasing around the world with the potential to disturb current conceptions of the international order. Finally, from a policy perspective, distinguishing between a state's operational and symbolic rhetoric can reduce the likelihood of strategic miscalculation. With these commonalities in mind, we contend that foreign policymakers must approach other states understanding that each state's domestic situation is unique and that while Sino-American competition looms large in American policymaking, it might not be the driving force behind other states' foreign policy decisions. In 2013, Israel’s Act Limiting Weight in the Modelling Industry first came into effect, requiring advertisers to disclose when images of commercial models have been digitally altered. The Act, which was the first of its kind, has come to be known as Israel’s “Photoshop Law” and was designed to help models maintain healthy weights and to ensure transparency in fashion advertising. Now, in response to growing concerns over body image issues linked with youth social media consumption, several nations around the world, including Norway and the United Kingdom, have proposed or enacted regulations that require social media influencers to add disclaimer labels to retouched images of their body in promotional posts. The prevalence of social media among youth has been heavily associated with body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, as adolescents are constantly exposed to unrealistic body standards. As government entities intend to address these issues through greater transparency by influencers online, it is unlikely that such laws will be practical or enforceable in the broad landscape of social media, thus ultimately failing to improve body image issues. There are ample national, transnational, and international geopolitical conflicts around the world, the two most prominent likely being the current ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, and the conflict between Taiwan (the Republic of China) and China (the People's Republic of China). To avoid criticism or the label of political bias, academics might refrain from using the term Taiwan or might not refer to it as a country. Similarly, they might not know whether they should refer to Crimea or the Donbas as being Ukrainian or Russian. Authors currently have little guidance and are somewhat left to their own devices when it comes to referring to these and other locations and territories, uncertain of the names that should be used to indicate them. They might also observe disclaimers on publishers' websites, in the footer of editorial board pages, or even as a small notice in their own manuscripts placed there by the publisher that distance the publisher from geopolitical conflicts and/or territorial claims, claiming neutrality, independent of whether those papers mention those conflicts, or not. Such disclaimers might be perceived as self-serving, placing the onus of responsibility of the choice of territorial term on authors' shoulders, so publishers should offer clearer advice to authors and editors on how to better handle this issue, that is, how to accurately name locations in geopolitically sensitive areas. There is a risk that papers that are insufficiently sensitive to such issues may be labelled as erroneous, and subjected to correction or retraction, or the authors may be subjected to public criticism or humiliation, so resolving this issue falls within the realm of academic publishing ethics. Currently, very little advice exists for geopolitical issues in the Committee on Publication Ethics and International Committee of Medical Journal Ethics ethics-related publishing guidelines. The article focuses on the increasing importance of tax liability regulations, especially amid the ongoing developments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the energy crisis.

The purpose of the present study was to empirically examine the efficacy of statutory disclosures in the Indian mutual fund industry. Whether the disclaimers aid investors in their decision-making process was investigated. The study made a distinction between type of investors (novice and seasoned investors) as disclaimers affect differently on investor's belief, attitude and ability to take informed decision. Survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire to evaluate the responses of 388 investors, consisting of 243 novice and 145 seasoned investors. Data was analyzed using mean comparison, independent t-test, and logistic regression model. Results revealed that statutory disclaimers were less effective on seasoned investors compared to novice investors. This suggests seasoned investors process the disclaimer information differently. Novice investors systematically process the disclaimers of mutual fund advertising, and their investment decision was meaningfully affected by the disclaimers. The study offers specific suggestions for stakeholders working in the area of behavioral finance, highlighting the importance of considering the dual process theory of information processing. To the best of authors knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to evaluate the efficacy of mandatory disclaimers in the Indian mutual fund industry, providing unique insights for future research in the field. Utterances give rise to many potential inferences. They can be communicated explicitly or implicitly, they may or may not be intended, and they may or may not even be inferred. In this paper, we focus on how speakers orient to 'unwanted inferences': potential inferences (or inferables) that can—but need not—be inferred from what has been said. Such inferences can be 'unwanted' in different ways: as secondary propositions that the speaker does not wish to be—or to have been—inferred, or as secondary propositions that the speaker does not wish to be held committed to having communicated. We illustrate the practices or methods by which speakers attempt to divert attention from them, offering a 6-part taxonomy that accounts for: (a) the source of the unwanted inference, and (b) the extent to which the inference in question is exposed or remains embedded in the conversational record. We then present some observations on how meanings of varying degrees of explicitness are drawn upon and negotiated by all parties, evidencing the range of meanings that are available in the minds of speakers that go beyond what the speaker is canonically taken to mean to communicate. • Speakers are sensitive to potential inferences that are available from what is said. • Unwanted inferences are not limited to misunderstandings of unintended primary meanings. • Six types of unwanted inference are identified by the way they are exposed in interaction. • Speakers can treat inferences as unwanted through explicit and implicit disclaimers. • Speakers can disclaim content of, or avoid commitment to, unwanted inferences. Objective: Front-of-package warning labels introduced in Mexico in 2020 included disclaimers that caution against allowing children to consume products with non-sugary sweeteners and caffeine. We examined the awareness and use of the disclaimers among Mexican adults and youth 1 month after the regulation was implemented. We also investigated their impact on the perceived healthfulness of industrialised beverages designed for children. Design: Data on the awareness and use of the disclaimers were analysed. Two between-subjects experiments examined the effect of a sweetener disclaimer (Experiment 1, youth and adults) or a caffeine disclaimer (Experiment 2, only adults) on the perceived healthfulness of industrialised beverages. Interactions between experimental conditions and demographic characteristics were tested. Setting: Online survey in 2020. Participants: Mexican adults (≥18 years, n 2108) and youth (10–17 years, n 1790). Results: Most participants (>80 %) had seen the disclaimers at least rarely, and over 60 % used them sometimes or frequently. The sweetener disclaimer led to a lower perceived healthfulness of a fruit drink (adults: 2·74 ± 1·44; youth: 2·04 ± 0·96) compared with the no-disclaimer condition (adults: 3·17 ± 1·54; youth: 2·32 ± 0·96) (t 's: >4·0, P values: <0·001). This effect was larger among older adults and male youth. The caffeine disclaimer did not affect adult's perceived healthfulness of a caffeinated drink (t = 0·861, P value = 0·3894). Conclusions: There were high awareness and use of the sweeteners and caffeine disclaimers shortly after the warning labels were implemented. The sweetener disclaimer appears to be helping consumers modify their perceptions regarding industrialised beverages for children. Viewing conversations from an epistemic perspective involves analysing how participants navigate their knowledge, handle uncertainty, and address their lack of knowledge. This article focuses on the use of epistemic disclaimers, i.e., linguistic expressions that speakers employ to indicate uncertainty or lack of knowledge, in a collection of Italian gynaecological conversations throughout pregnancy. Specifically, the study examines the occurrences, features, and pragmatic functions of the epistemic disclaimers, with a specific focus on Non so, which is the Italian equivalent of "I don't know" in English, the most extensively researched epistemic disclaimer. The study aims to (1) investigate the types and frequency of uncertain and unknowing epistemic disclaimers in the gynaecological corpus and (2) identify their characteristics and pragmatic functions. The primary findings indicate that epistemic disclaimers are primarily used to convey unknowledge rather than uncertainty. However, while patients use more epistemic disclaimers than doctors, they mainly use them to communicate unknowledge, whereas doctors mainly use them to express uncertainty. Purpose: This study empirically assesses the perceptions the public has of employees and their organization following a [re]tweet, and the additional potential ameliorating effect of a disclaimer distancing the organization from the individual employee's social media presence. Design/methodology/approach: A fully crossed 2 (disclaimer vs. no disclaimer) × 2 (positive vs. negative valence post) × 2 (post vs. retweet) experiment exposed participants (N = 173) to an employee's personal tweet. Resultant perceptions of both the poster (i.e., goodwill) and the poster's organization (i.e., organizational reputation) were analyzed using planned contrast analyses. Findings: Findings reveal audiences form impressions of individuals based on both tweeted and retweeted content. Perceptions of both the poster's goodwill and the poster's organization were commensurate with the valence of the poster's tweets, stronger when posts were original tweets rather than retweets, and there was a significant interaction effect between valence and [re]tweet. Disclaimers did not significantly affect perceptions, suggesting employers may be better served by asking employees to omit reference to their employer on their personal social media accounts. Originality/value: This research contributes to understanding how employee and organizational reputation are affected by employees' personal social media content. Results suggest that even when a disclaimer explicitly seeks to distance an employee from the organization, audiences still see the employee as an informal brand ambassadors of their organization. Library and information science professionals are considered to have appropriate skills and competencies with regard to copyright and related issues. Using a quantitative survey at the provincial level (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), the copyright literacy of library and information science professionals was investigated in Pakistan. Out of 311 respondents, 279 participated in the survey. The results indicate that library and information science professionals are somewhat familiar with copyright and related issues. The majority of them (94%) mentioned that published materials such as books and articles are under the protection of copyright. Similarly, 73% were aware of local copyright laws; however, they were less familiar with international copyright legislation. Library professionals mentioned that the current library and information science curriculum is not providing adequate knowledge about copyright, therefore, most (94%) expressed the need to include copyright legislation and basic concepts of copyright in the library and information science curriculum at all levels. Americans often learn about important health issues through pharmaceutical advertisements. Unfortunately, public trust in the pharmaceutical industry historically registers at low levels. Therefore, it is important to examine different aspects of commercial elements that may promote or prevent audience trust. This study combines different levels of viewing experience (comparing implicit micro-level behaviours with explicit self-reports) to examine the potential effect of 'Actor Portrayal' versus 'Real Patient' disclaimers in HPV vaccination advertisements. Key findings show that fixation count on the type of disclaimer significantly predicted perceptions of message credibility. Exposure to specific disclaimers also influenced perceptions of vaccine effectiveness as well as future vaccination intentions. This response provides a response to the Lubin and Reio article, Response to Lubin and Reio, "From the Standpoint of Instructional Designers: Critically Investigating the Coordination of ID Contributions to Collaborative Online Course Development." Specifically, it explores persistent gaps in the literature on the relationships between faculty and of instructional designers when designing asynchronous online courses in higher education: (a) lack of the perspectives of faculty and administrators in the research; (b) a lack of a formal definition of collaboration and, along with that, a consideration of the other roles that instructional designers play in higher education; (c) issues regarding the status of faculty and instructional designers in higher education; and (d) copyright ownership issues and their impact on working relationships. The response argues that, until the research explores these issues, the ability of this line of research to effectively advocate for change in the relationships between faculty and instructional designers is limited. On June 27, 2023, the Accord Research Alliance Faculty Group organized a webinar to provide a space for discussion on Richard Slimbach's article "Asking Tough Questions About Transformational Development," published in this journal in the summer of 2023 (Slimbach 2023). The webinar was moderated by David Bronkema, co-editor of the journal, and started with remarks by three main discussants: Ravi Jayakaran (president of Medical Ambassadors International) who tackled Slimbach's questions around faith and development; Philip Powell (co-director of the Justice Conference, UK, and also Theology and Network Engagement Manager with Tearfund, UK) who responded to questions involving faith and political economy; and Katie Toop (senior director of transformational development with World Concern), who addressed the questions of faith and field partnerships. These three responses, published separately in this issue of the journal along with Slimbach's comments on them, were followed by a moderated discussion between the author and the three respondents, which is reproduced below in a lightly edited version. Seeking a better understanding of human behavior and social phenomena were the primary pursuits of Richard Day's scholarship, and of the Journal he co-founded and edited. In that pioneering spirit of adventure, we structure approaches to modeling human behavior in three steps with respect to scientific disciplines, their associated principles, and subject matters: human faculties, biology and physics. We note that the extant practice of modeling human behavior in social sciences starts from psycho-sociological features and principles before moving to biological ones, and finally using physical laws for formalization. These formalizations are often presented with the disclaimer: of course, human behavior extends beyond our physical existence. Alternatively, but less often, they are defended in a reductionist spirit. In the present contribution we propose reversing this extant order of deploying scientific principles and argue that this exercise will help link social sciences to biology and physics, without reductionism. These proceedings contain presentation summaries and discussion highlights from the University of Maryland Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (M-CERSI) Workshop on Co-processed API, held on July 13 and 14, 2022. This workshop examined recent advances in the use of co-processed active pharmaceutical ingredients as a technology to improve drug substance physicochemical properties and drug product manufacturing process robustness, and explored proposals for enabling commercialization of these transformative technologies. Regulatory considerations were discussed with a focus on the classification, CMC strategies, and CMC documentation supporting the use of this class of materials from clinical studies through commercialization. The workshop format was split between presentations from industry, academia and the FDA, followed by breakout sessions structured to facilitate discussion. Given co-processed API is a relatively new concept, the authors felt it prudent to compile these proceedings to gain further visibility to topics discussed and perspectives raised during the workshop, particularly during breakout discussions. Disclaimer: This paper reflects discussions that occurred among stakeholder groups, including FDA, on various topics. The topics covered in the paper, including recommendations, therefore, are intended to capture key discussion points. The paper should not be interpreted to reflect alignment on the different topics by the participants, and the recommendations provided should not be used in lieu of FDA published guidance or direct conversations with the Agency about a specific development program. This paper used the mixed research method of bibliometric and content analysis to study 284 studies on service robots in the tourism and hospitality industry collected from the Web of Science database. Results show that research in this field started late, and that the COVID-19 pandemic has promoted the rapid growth of the number of research papers. The International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management has so far published the most number of papers. Numerous scholars from universities in different regions of the world have made significant contributions to the research of service robots, and academic collaborations are relatively common, but there are only very few high-yield authors. Empirical research has been widely favored by researchers, wherein online questionnaire and experimental methods have been frequently used. Multidisciplinary theories have also been cited in related articles, especially on the applications of psychological theories. The research fronts cover four branches focusing on service robots, consumers, human employees, and service environment, with all four parts largely overlapping in content. Finally, the paper discusses prospects for the future research agenda of service robots in the tourism and hospitality industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
