Background: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a popular technique which can be used to track longitudinal changes in body composition. However, precision of the technique has been questioned, especially among athletic populations where small but meaningful changes are often observed. Guidelines exist which attempt to optimize precision of the technique but fail to account for potentially important variables. Standardization of dietary intake and physical activity in the 24 hr prior to assessment has been proposed as an approach to minimizing the error of impedance-derived estimates of body composition. Methods: Eighteen recreational athletes, male (n = 10) and female (n = 8), underwent two consecutive BIA tests to quantify within-day error, and a third test (the day before or after) to quantify between-day error. All food and fluid intake plus physical activity from the 24 hr prior to the first BIA scan was replicated during the following 24 hr. Precision error was calculated as the root mean square standard deviation, percentage coefficient of variation, and least significant change. Results: There were no significant differences in precision error of within- and between-day fat-free mass, fat mass, and total body water. Differences in precision error of fat-free mass and total body water, but not fat mass, were less than the smallest effect size of interest. Conclusion: The 24-hr standardization of dietary intake and physical activity may be an effective approach to minimizing precision error associated with BIA. The aim of this audit was to assess the representation of female athletes, dietary control methods, and gold standard female methodology that underpins the current guidelines for chronic carbohydrate (CHO) intake strategies for athlete daily training diets. Using a standardized audit, 281 studies were identified that examined high versus moderate CHO, periodized CHO availability, and/or low CHO, high fat diets. There were 3,735 total participants across these studies with only ∼16% of participants being women. Few studies utilized a design that specifically considered females, with only 16 studies (∼6%) including a female-only cohort and six studies (∼2%) with a sex-based comparison in their statistical procedure, in comparison to the 217 studies (∼77%) including a male-only cohort. Most studies (∼72%) did not provide sufficient information to define the menstrual status of participants, and of the 18 studies that did, optimal methodology for control of ovarian hormones was only noted in one study. While ∼40% of male-only studies provided all food and beverages to participants, only ∼20% of studies with a female-specific design used this approach for dietary control. Most studies did not implement strategies to ensure compliance to dietary interventions and/or control energy intake during dietary interventions. The literature that has contributed to the current guidelines for daily CHO intake is lacking in research that is specific to, or adequately addresses, the female athlete. β-Alanine (BA) is one of the most widely used sport supplements, due to its capacity to improve high-intensity exercise performance by increasing muscle carnosine (MCarn) content, and consequently, the buffering capacity of the muscle. BA is also available in a variety of animal foods, but little is currently known about the influence of dietary BA intake on MCarn. The aim of the current study was to compile a detailed summary of available data on the BA content of commonly consumed foods, and to explore whether associations could be detected between self-reported dietary BA intake and skeletal MCarn in a group of 60 healthy, active, omnivorous men and women. Dietary BA intake was assessed via 3-day food records, and MCarn content assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography. A series of univariate and multivariate linear regression models were used to explore associations between estimated dietary BA and MCarn. No evidence of associations between dietary BA intake and MCarn were identified, with effect sizes close to zero calculated from models accounting for key demographic variables (f² ≤ 0.02 for all analyses). These findings suggest that capacity to increase MCarn via dietary strategies may be limited, and that supplementation may be required to induce increases of the magnitude required to improve performance. Due to their relationship with prey availability, elasmobranchs with an opportunistic diet can serve as indicators of changes in the marine community, thereby enhancing our understanding of the health of marine ecosystems. In this study, the Zearaja brevicaudata's trophic ecology was studied, by analysing its stomach contents, aiming to provide evidence of long-term changes in diet resulting from shifts in the structure of the Argentine Patagonian marine community in response to fishing pressure. Changes were evaluated according to catch area, predator size, sex, maturity over time. Moreover, the relationship between Zearaja brevicaudata's dietary shifts and the fishing effort of Merluccius hubbsi was investigated. Our results suggest a gradual replacement of the main prey species with lower trophic level species. Although no correlation was found with fishing effort, the diet of Z. brevicaudata over time reflected changes similar to those associated to the fishing exploitation of M. hubbsi in the Patagonian system. In this context, the Z. brevicaudata's diet emerges as a valuable tool for monitoring and assessing changes in the marine community. By serving as an indicator, Z. brevicaudata's diet provides crucial insights into the conservation status of the marine ecosystem, enabling informed management and conservation efforts. For most animals, the microbiome is key for nutrition and pathogen defence, and is often shaped by diet. Corbiculate bees, including honey bees, bumble bees, and stingless bees, share a core microbiome that has been shaped, at least in part, by the challenges associated with pollen digestion. However, three species of stingless bees deviate from the general rule of bees obtaining their protein exclusively from pollen (obligate pollinivores) and instead consume carrion as their sole protein source (obligate necrophages) or consume both pollen and carrion (facultative necrophages). These three life histories can provide missing insights into microbiome evolution associated with extreme dietary transitions. Here, we investigate, via shotgun metagenomics, the functionality of the microbiome across three bee diet types: obligate pollinivory, obligate necrophagy, and facultative necrophagy. We find distinct differences in microbiome composition and gene functional profiles between the diet types. Obligate necrophages and pollinivores have more specialized microbes, whereas facultative necrophages have a diversity of environmental microbes associated with several dietary niches. Our study suggests that necrophagous bee microbiomes may have evolved to overcome cellular stress and microbial competition associated with carrion. We hypothesize that the microbiome evolved social phenotypes, such as biofilms, that protect the bees from opportunistic pathogens present on carcasses, allowing them to overcome novel nutritional challenges. Whether specific microbes enabled diet shifts or diet shifts occurred first and microbial evolution followed requires further research to disentangle. Nonetheless, we find that necrophagous microbiomes, vertebrate and invertebrate alike, have functional commonalities regardless of their taxonomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nesfatin concentrations are positively correlated with beta cell function. However, it is unclear whether diet composition mediates this relationship. We recruited 27 overweight individuals who practiced Orthodox fasting (OF), a subset of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), for 7 weeks. Fourteen overweight people who practiced 16:8 time-restricted eating served as control group. Anthropometric parameters, biochemical data and adipokine levels were evaluated at baseline and after the end of the diet period (7 weeks from baseline). Subsequently, participants were asked to return to their usual eating plans, and an additional evaluation was performed 5 weeks after the end of the research diets (12 weeks from baseline). We observed a significant and negative correlation between HOMA-B and nesfatin values at 12 weeks, only in the OF group (r = −0.455, p = 0.01). In conclusion, returning to normal eating habits after 7 weeks of strict adherence to MedDiet affects the homeostatic balance between insulin secretion and nesfatin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk have received much attention, but evidence among the Chinese population is scarce. This study aims to update the results of two cohort studies and provide the sex-specific associations in the Chinese population. Methods: This study was based on two cohorts from the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS) and the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS). Diet information was collected by validated food frequency questionnaires. Dietary patterns were derived by factor analysis. Cox regression model was utilized to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk. Results: During median follow-up years of 11.2 (male) and 17.1 (female) years, 427 males and 252 females were identified as incident primary liver cancer cases. In males, vegetable-based dietary pattern was inversely associated with liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.67, 95%CI 0.51–0.88, Ptrend < 0.001). Interaction analysis indicated that in males lower vegetable-based dietary pattern score and older age/medical history of chronic hepatitis combined increase the hazard of liver cancer more than the sum of them, with a 114% and 1061% higher risk, respectively. In females, the fruit-based dietary pattern was associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.63, 95%CI 0.42–0.95, Ptrend = 0.03). In both males and females, null associations were observed between the meat-based dietary pattern and the risk of liver cancer. Conclusion: A vegetable-based dietary pattern in males and a fruit-based dietary pattern in females tended to have a protective role on liver cancer risk. Purpose: There are several pathways by which zinc may be a modifiable factor to slow age-related cognitive decline. We investigated the associations between serum and dietary zinc and cognitive impairment in a longitudinal cohort. Methods: We used data from the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Cohort (n = 30,239) and the REGARDS Trace Element Study (n = 2666). Baseline serum zinc concentrations (2003–2007) were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Baseline dietary zinc intake was measured via the Block food frequency questionnaire. Serum zinc concentrations and dietary zinc intake were categorized into quartiles. The outcome of interest was impairment on the Six-Item Screener (SIS), a measure of global cognitive functioning administered annually. The Enhanced Cognitive Battery (ECB), a more comprehensive series of tests assessing memory and fluency, was administered every two years and considered a secondary outcome. Associations between zinc and incident impairment were assessed using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Among 2065 participants with serum zinc data, 184 individuals developed impairment over 10 years of follow-up. In adjusted models, there was no significant association between serum zinc and impairment as assessed by the SIS or the ECB. Among 18,103 participants who had dietary data, 1424 experienced incident impairment on the SIS. Dietary zinc intake was not significantly associated with impairment as assessed by the SIS or the ECB in adjusted models. Conclusion: Findings from this U.S. cohort did not support the hypothesis that serum zinc concentration or dietary zinc intake is associated with the risk of cognitive impairment. The sea cucumber Holothuria inornata is a species whose populations are at risk. This study aims to investigate its reproduction, embryonic and larval development, and the settlement of H. inornata under an algae-based diet. Twenty breeders were utilized, which underwent a 1.5-h desiccation followed by a thermal shock (27 to 32 °C). Embryonic development stage was recorded, and from the auricularia larval stage, three treatments were evaluated: A: Chaetoceros muelleri and Isochrysis galbana (1:1 ratio); B: C. muelleri, I. galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, and Pavlova lutheri (1:1:1:1 ratio); and C: Chaetoceros muelleri, I. galbana, T. suecica, P. lutheri, Navicula sp. (LPU-6) (1:1:1:1:1 ratio), with a larval density of 100 larvae L−1 in triplicate. The embryonic development in H. inornata lasts for 3 days, five larval stages were recorded: (1) Auricularia (days 3–8, 300 to 520 μm), (2) late auricularia (days 8–11, 520 to 670 μm), (3) doliolaria (days 11–13, 460 to 550 μm), (4) late doliolaria (days 13–16, 400 to 440 μm), and (5) pentacula (days 15–19, 650 to 900 μm). The post-settlement survival rate was 0% under treatment A, 2.38 ± 0.16% under treatment B, and 3.79 ± 0.41% under treatment C. Based on these findings, we concluded that H. inornata specie spawn through a combined desiccation-thermal shock process with a larval period of up to 19 days, and subsequently produce juvenile individuals in captivity with a varied microalgae diet. Land‐use and climate change are major pressures on terrestrial biodiversity. Species' extinction risk and responses to human pressures relate to ecological traits and other characteristics in some clades. However, large‐scale comparative assessments of the associations between traits and responses to multiple human pressures across multiple clades are needed. We investigated whether a set of ecological characteristics that are commonly measured across terrestrial vertebrates (ecological traits and geographic range area) are associated with species' responses to different land‐use types and species' likely sensitivity to climate change. We aimed to test whether generalizable patterns in response to these pressures arise across both pressures and across vertebrate clades, which could inform assessments of the global signature of human pressures on vertebrate biodiversity and guide conservation efforts. At the species level, we investigated associations between land‐use responses and ecological characteristics with a space‐for‐time substitution approach, making use of the PREDICTS database. We investigated associations between ecological characteristics and expected climate‐change sensitivity, estimated from properties of species realized climatic niches. Among the characteristics we considered, 3 were consistently associated with strong land‐use responses and high climate‐change sensitivity across terrestrial vertebrate classes: narrow geographic range, narrow habitat breadth, and specialization on natural habitats (which described whether a species occurs in artificial habitats or not). The associations of other traits with species' land‐use responses and climate‐change sensitivity often depended on species' class and land‐use type, highlighting an important degree of context dependency. In all classes, invertebrate eaters and fruit and nectar eaters tended to be negatively affected in disturbed land‐use types, whereas invertebrate‐eating and plant‐ and seed‐eating birds were estimated to be more sensitive to climate change, raising concerns about the continuation of ecological processes sustained by these species under global changes. Our results highlight a consistently higher sensitivity of narrowly distributed species and habitat specialists to land‐use and climate change, which provides support for capturing such characteristics in large‐scale vulnerability assessments. The trophic niche is one of the most important ecological traits for any species, providing information about trophic position in the food web, habitat preferences, and interspecific interactions. In this study, we describe the autumn diet of two sympatric species of salamander from central Italy—Italian Cave Salamanders (Speleomantes italicus) and Fire Salamanders (Salamandra salamandra), assessing whether competition for the same prey occurs. Furthermore, we combine our data with those obtained for the same population during a different season (spring) and assess potential seasonal variation in the diet of these two salamander species. The overlap of the trophic niche between the two species was limited, with S. italicus consuming smaller and fast-moving prey (e.g., Diptera, Collembola), and S. salamandra consuming slow and often elongated prey (e.g., Gastropoda, Haplotaxida, Diplopoda). Seasonal differences in diet composition were observed in both species between spring and autumn; in autumn, both species narrowed their trophic niche breadth. This seasonal divergence is likely due to the variation of prey phenology and availability. The consumption of prey of different size was likely the main factor allowing the coexistence of these two salamander species. In both species we observed a general increase in the proportion of generalist individuals in autumn, most likely because of a reduction in prey availability. In addition to providing information on the trophic niche of these species, our study represented a further step that helps unravel the dynamics promoting the coexistence of potentially competing species. Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a form of chronic pain that affects a large number of women. It can start at any age and last a lifetime, with no cure. The Mediterranean diet is said to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate possible beneficial effects of a personalized Mediterranean diet in patients with fibromyalgia. Methods: Outpatients with fibromyalgia were recruited and invited to participate in the study, including clinical, nutritional, and dietary assessments. Patients received a personalized Mediterranean diet (DIET group) or a general balanced diet (NODIET group) to be followed for 8 weeks. All tests were carried out at baseline and repeated after 4 and 8 weeks. Results: In total, 100 subjects were included, 84 of whom completed the study. Most of the patients showed incorrect habits in terms of food choices, timing of meals and composition of nutrients. The DIET group showed an improvement in most of the fibromyalgia parameters, including the disability scores, fatigue, and anxiety. Conclusions: The habit of eating inflammatory foods and/or eating meals with the wrong nutritional content would increase the negative status of patients with fibromyalgia. The composition of mammalian gut microbiomes is highly conserved within species, yet the mechanisms by which microbiome composition is transmitted and maintained within lineages of wild animals remain unclear. Mutually compatible hypotheses exist, including that microbiome fidelity results from inherited dietary habits, shared environmental exposure, morphophysiological filtering and/or maternal effects. Interspecific hybrids are a promising system in which to interrogate the determinants of microbiome composition because hybrids can decouple traits and processes that are otherwise co‐inherited in their parent species. We used a population of free‐living hybrid zebras (Equus quagga × grevyi) in Kenya to evaluate the roles of these four mechanisms in regulating microbiome composition. We analysed faecal DNA for both the trnL‐P6 and the 16S rRNA V4 region to characterize the diets and microbiomes of the hybrid zebra and of their parent species, plains zebra (E. quagga) and Grevy's zebra (E. grevyi). We found that both diet and microbiome composition clustered by species, and that hybrid diets and microbiomes were largely nested within those of the maternal species, plains zebra. Hybrid microbiomes were less variable than those of either parent species where they co‐occurred. Diet and microbiome composition were strongly correlated, although the strength of this correlation varied between species. These patterns are most consistent with the maternal‐effects hypothesis, somewhat consistent with the diet hypothesis, and largely inconsistent with the environmental‐sourcing and morphophysiological‐filtering hypotheses. Maternal transmittance likely operates in conjunction with inherited feeding habits to conserve microbiome composition within species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: People living with mesothelioma have a high symptom burden that can affect dietary intake and the development of malnutrition, subsequently impacting on patient‐related and treatment outcomes. The present study aimed to develop a better understanding of the experiences of diet and appetite in people living with mesothelioma and their informal carers. Methods: Twenty‐three participants took part in semistructured interviews including 12 people living with mesothelioma (10 pleural and 2 peritoneal) aged 56–83 years and 12 informal carers, predominantly their spouses. Open ended questions focussed on experiences of appetite and diet, as well as approaches to maintain adequate food intake. Thematic analysis was applied. Results: Four themes were generated that included unintentional weight loss and poor appetite during diagnosis and when undergoing medical intervention. Participants managed their appetite and diet by taking each day at a time and this was influenced by the physical and emotional experiences of mesothelioma. The informal carer took on the lead role of managing their relatives' diet and implemented their own nutritional strategies and there were challenges with dietary advice. Conclusions: Appetite was viewed as a multidimensional experience and was grounded within the biopsychosocial model. The findings offer important insights into opportunities informing the development of effective interventions that provide meaningful benefits for individuals living with mesothelioma and their family. Background: Interest in addictive eating continues to grow from both a research and clinical perspective. To date, dietary assessment alongside food addiction status is limited, with management options for addictive eating behaviours variable, given the overlap with myriad conditions. The aim of this study was to report the dietary intake and quality‐of‐life outcomes from a personality‐targeted motivational interviewing intervention delivered by dietitians using telehealth. Methods: The study was conducted in adults exceeding their healthy‐weight range with symptoms of addictive eating, as defined by the Yale Food Addiction Scale. The 52 participants were randomised to either intervention or control, with 49 participants commencing the intervention. Individuals participated in the 3‐month, three‐session FoodFix interventions, with dietary outcomes assessed by the Australian Eating Survey and quality of life assessed using the SF‐36 at baseline and 3 months. Results: There were small‐to‐moderate effect sizes, specifically in the intervention group for decreased added sugar intake, increased protein intake, increased meat quality and increased vegetable servings per day. Six out of eight quality‐of‐life domains had small‐to‐moderate effect sizes. Conclusions: This intervention has highlighted the need for further research in larger sample sizes to assess dietary behaviour change by those who self‐report addictive eating. Key points: Participants in both the intervention and control groups exhibited low diet quality, characterised by low vegetable intake, high saturated fat and sugar intake.The intervention group showed a greater reduction in daily added sugar intake when compared with the control group.The intervention group showed improvements in six of the eight quality‐of‐life domains assessed, with low‐to‐medium effect sizes. Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an incurable illness of the gastrointestinal tract. Its relapsing–remitting nature negatively impacts physical health and quality of life. Food and eating are key concerns for people with this illness. To provide holistic person‐centred care, healthcare providers (HCPs) need to meet patients' dietary information needs. However, there is a paucity of literature describing these in any meaningful detail. The present study aimed to explore the perceived dietary information needs of individuals with IBD, the perceptions of HCPs and enablers and barriers to communication. Methods: Online and face‐to‐face semi‐structured interviews with 13 HCPs and 29 people with IBD were conducted. The framework method aided thematic analysis of de‐identified interview recordings. Results: The cyclical nature of IBD contextualised the five themes. Both individuals with IBD and HCPs articulated similar ideas viewed from different perspectives: (1) living with IBD is exasperating and unique to the individual; (2) individuals with IBD desire dietary information; (3) diet manipulation is used to exert control on a disease with unpredictable nature; (4) people with IBD and HCPs have different views on the role of diet; and (5) doctors are perceived as gatekeepers to accessing dietetics care. Conclusions: A lack of dietary guidance at diagnosis negatively impacts the patient's journey with food and eating. The present study supports a paradigm shift towards holistic person‐centred care for consistent access to dietetics services to meet the needs of people with IBD. Background: Malnutrition and HIV form a vicious cycle and women are at an increased risk of malnutrition from HIV. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommends a minimum dietary diversity for women (MDD‐W) of five food groups; however, paucity of information exists about the diet quality of this population in Uganda. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with the MDD among HIV positive women of reproductive age (15–49 years) receiving antiretroviral therapy in Kabale district, Uganda. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional study. Probability proportional to size sampling was applied to select the number of participants per clinic and respondents were sampled systematically on a particular day in each clinic. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the respondent characteristics and the FAO's Individual Dietary Diversity questionnaire was used to collect the 24‐hour dietary intake. Data were analysed using appropriate software. Descriptive statistics were applied for univariate analysis. Modified Poisson was used to determine the factors associated with MDD. The study was approved by the Makerere University School of Public Health Institutional Review Board and informed consent was obtained from the respondents. Results: Some 90.9% of the respondents were Bakiga, mean age was 34.8 ± 8.1 years, 47.6% were married and 98.0% came from nuclear families with 4.4 ± 1.9 members. The mean number of food groups consumed was 4.7 ± 1.7 with roots and tubers, pulses, and dark leafy and vitamin A vegetables, whereas milk and eggs were mostly consumed and fruits were least consumed. The prevalence of the MDD‐W was 48.2%. Factors associated with MDD score at multivariate level included; age, type of employment, having nausea, viral load status and HIV clinical stage. Conclusions: Almost one half of the HIV positive women on antiretroviral therapy in the district achieve the MDD‐W, attributed to being middle aged, being casual employment and having an unsuppressed viral load. Introduction: The number of people adhering to plant‐based diets has been increasing dramatically in recent years, fueled by both environmental and animal welfare concerns. Beneficial or possible adverse consequences of such diets, particularly the most restrictive forms during pregnancy, have been minimally explored. The aim of this prospective observational study was to examine associations between different forms of plant‐based diets during pregnancy with birth outcomes and pregnancy complications. Material and methods: The Danish National Birth Cohort included 100 413 pregnancies to 91 381 women in 1996–2002. The population consisted of 66 738 pregnancies, about which sufficient dietary data were available and included in the study. Dietary and supplemental intake was assessed by Food Frequency Questionnaire in gestational week 25 and women were characterized as fish/poultry‐vegetarians, lacto/ovo‐vegetarians, vegans or omnivorous, based on their self‐report in gestational week 30. Main outcome measures were pregnancy and birth complications, birthweight and small for gestational age. Results: A total of 98.7% (n = 65 872) of participants were defined as omnivorous, whereas 1.0% (n = 666), 0.3% (n = 183) and 0.03% (n = 18) identified themselves as fish/poultry vegetarians, lacto/ovo‐vegetarians or vegans, respectively. Protein intake was lower among lacto/ovo‐vegetarians (13.3%) and vegans (10.4%) than among omnivorous participants (15.4%). Intake of micronutrients was also considerably lower among vegans, but when dietary supplements were taken into consideration, no major differences were observed. Compared with omnivorous mothers, vegans had a higher prevalence of preeclampsia and their offspring had on average −240 g (95% confidence interval −450 to −30) lower birthweight. Conclusions: The women reporting that they adhered to vegan diets during pregnancy had offspring with lower mean birthweight and higher risk of preeclampsia compared with omnivorous mothers. Both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), a progressive neurological condition, have broad-ranging impacts on nutritional intake and dietary behaviour. Historically studies focused on individual dietary components, but evidence demonstrating ameliorative outcomes with whole-of-diet patterns such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) is emerging. These diets provide plenty of antioxidant rich fruits, vegetables, nuts, wholegrains and healthy fats. Paradoxically, the ketogenic diet, high fat and very low carbohydrate, is also proving to be beneficial. Within the PD community, it is well advertised that nutritional intake is associated with disease progression and symptom severity but understandably, the messaging is inconsistent. With projected prevalence estimated to rise to 1.6 million by 2037, more data regarding the impact of whole-of-diet patterns is needed to develop diet-behaviour change programmes and provide clear advice for PD management. Objectives and Methods: Objectives of this scoping review of both peer-reviewed academic and grey literatures are to determine the current evidence-based consensus for best dietary practice in PD and to ascertain whether the grey literature aligns. Results and Discussion: The consensus from the academic literature was that a MeDi/MIND whole of diet pattern (fresh fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, omega-3 fish and olive oil) is the best practice for improving PD outcomes. Support for the KD is emerging, but further research is needed to determine long-term effects. Encouragingly, the grey literature mostly aligned but nutrition advice was rarely forefront. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is accompanied by many health-related issues. This study aimed to evaluate the anthropometric indices, nutrient intakes and health-related characteristics of MS patients as well as their possible correlations. This cross-sectional study was performed on 283 MS patients in Shiraz, Iran, during 2018–2019. Body mass index (BMI) and body composition were measured for each participant. A food frequency questionnaire was used to determine the patients' nutrient intakes. The level of fatigue, disability and quality of life of the individuals were assessed by the modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS), the expanded disability status scale and the multiple sclerosis quality of life-54 questionnaires, respectively. The results revealed that 43.11% of the patients were overweight or obese, and their %body fat (%BF) was 35.65 ± 7.63. Besides, intakes of vitamins A, E, D, folic acid, calcium, zinc and magnesium were significantly lower than recommendations in both genders, and sodium intake was significantly higher than the tolerable upper intake level in females. A significant positive linear correlation was observed between MFIS and BMI (r = 0.12, P = 0.045). Significant positive correlations were also found between psychosocial subscale of MFIS and both of %BF (r = 0.12, P = 0.049) and visceral fat area (r = 0.14, P = 0.02). Unexpectedly, the patients' quality of life showed significant negative correlations with fat free mass and skeletal muscle mass. Being overweight, having a high %BF and poor nutrient intakes are common among MS patients. Objective: People who eat healthier diets are less likely to develop dementia, but the biological mechanism of this protection is not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that healthy diet protects against dementia because it slows the pace of biological aging. Methods: We analyzed Framingham Offspring Cohort data. We included participants ≥60 years‐old, free of dementia and having dietary, epigenetic, and follow‐up data. We assessed healthy diet as long‐term adherence to the Mediterranean‐Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet (MIND, over 4 visits spanning 1991–2008). We measured the pace of aging from blood DNA methylation data collected in 2005–2008 using the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock. Incident dementia and mortality were defined using study records compiled from 2005 to 2008 visit through 2018. Results: Of n = 1,644 included participants (mean age 69.6, 54% female), n = 140 developed dementia and n = 471 died over 14 years of follow‐up. Greater MIND score was associated with slower DunedinPACE and reduced risks for dementia and mortality. Slower DunedinPACE was associated with reduced risks for dementia and mortality. In mediation analysis, slower DunedinPACE accounted for 27% of the diet‐dementia association and 57% of the diet‐mortality association. Interpretation: Findings suggest that slower pace of aging mediates part of the relationship of healthy diet with reduced dementia risk. Monitoring pace of aging may inform dementia prevention. However, a large fraction of the diet‐dementia association remains unexplained and may reflect direct connections between diet and brain aging that do not overlap other organ systems. Unhealthy lifestyle, such as alcohol use, and negative health outcomes have been associated with impairments in psychological well-being. The primary objective of the study was to test the efficacy of an intervention based on Well-Being Therapy to prevent or stem alcohol use, binge drinking and other unhealthy lifestyle among Italian adolescents in school settings. A three-arm cluster randomized controlled trial including three test periods (baseline, post-test, six-month follow-up) was implemented. Seven classes (144 students) were randomly assigned to receive well-being intervention (WBI), lifestyle intervention (LI), or no intervention (NI). Primary outcomes were alcohol use (AUDIT-C), binge drinking and other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (i.e. unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco and cannabis smoking, poor sleep and Internet addiction). Linear mixed models and mixed-effects logistic regression were used to test the efficacy of WBI in comparison with LI and NI. At six-month follow-up, AUDIT-C total score increased more in NI in comparison with WBI (p = 0.044) and LI (p = 0.016), whereas the odds of being classified as at-risk drinker were lower in WBI (p = 0.038) and LI (p = 0.002), than NI. Only WBI showed a protective effect for cannabis use at post-test in comparison with NI (p = 0.003) and LI (p = 0.014). Sleep hours at night decreased more in NI than in LI (p = 0.027) at six months. Internet addiction decreased more in WBI (p = 0.002) and LI (p = 0.005) at post-test in comparison with NI. Although both interventions showed a positive impact on adolescent lifestyle, the positive effect of WBI on cannabis use underlines how this approach might be promising to stem adolescents' substance use. Background: Dietary intake influences gut microbiome composition, which in turn may be associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). Associations of the gut microbiome with colorectal carcinogenesis may be mediated through bacterially regulated, metabolically active metabolites, including trimethylamine N‐oxide (TMAO) and its precursors, choline, L‐carnitine, and betaine. Methods: Prospective associations of circulating TMAO and its precursors with CRC risk were investigated. TMAO, choline, betaine, and L‐carnitine were measured in baseline serum samples from 761 incident CRC cases and 1:1 individually matched controls in the prospective Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial Cohort using targeted fully quantitative liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry panels. Prospective associations of the metabolites with CRC risk, using multivariable conditional logistic regression, were measured. Associations of a priori–selected dietary exposures with the four metabolites were also investigated. Results: TMAO and its precursors were not associated with CRC risk overall, but TMAO and choline were positively associated with higher risk for distal CRC (continuous ORQ90 vs. Q10 [95% CI] = 1.90 [CI, 1.24–2.92; p =.003] and 1.26 [1.17–1.36; p <.0001], respectively). Conversely, choline was inversely associated with rectal cancer (ORQ90 vs. Q10 [95% CI] = 0.77 [0.76–0.79; p <.001]). Red meat, which was previously associated with CRC risk in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial Cohort , was positively associated with TMAO (Spearman rho = 0.10; p =.0003). Conclusions: Serum TMAO and choline may be associated with higher risk of distal CRC, and red meat may be positively associated with serum TMAO. These findings provide insight into a potential microbially mediated mechanism underlying CRC etiology. In a prospective study among men and women in the United States, we measured circulating trimethylamine N‐oxide (TMAO), choline, betaine, and L‐carnitine and found that TMAO and choline were positively associated with distal colon cancers. Individuals vary in their ability to taste, and some individuals are more sensitive to certain tastes than others. Taste sensitivity is a predictor of various factors, such as diet, eating behavior, appetite regulation, and overall health. Furthermore, taste sensitivity can fluctuate within an individual over short to long periods of time: for example, in daily (diurnal) cycles, monthly (menstrual) cycles (in females), and yearly (seasonal) cycles. Understanding these temporal patterns is important for understanding individual eating habits and food preferences, particularly in the context of personalized and precision nutrition. This review provides a summary of the literature on taste sensitivity patterns across 3 temporal dimensions: daily, monthly, and yearly. Good evidence for diurnal patterns has been observed for sweet taste and fat taste, although the evidence is limited to rodent studies for the latter. Obese populations showed limited variation to sweet and fat taste sensitivities over a day, with limited variation in sweet taste sensitivity being linked to insulin resistance. There were mixed observations of temporal variation in sensitivity to sour and umami tastes, and there were no patterns in sensitivity to bitter taste. Menstrual patterns in sweet taste sensitivity were consistent with patterns in food intake. Other taste modality investigations had mixed findings that had little agreement across studies. Hormonal changes in females influence taste sensitivity to some degree, although the overall patterns are unclear. Seasonal patterns have been less well studied, but there is weak evidence that sweet, salty, and bitter taste sensitivities change across seasons. Differences in seasonal taste patterns have been observed in subgroups susceptible to mental health disorders, requiring further investigation. Patterns of taste sensitivity are evident across multiple temporal dimensions, and more research is needed to determine the influence of these patterns on food intake. Dysregulation of these patterns may also be a marker of certain diseases or health conditions, warranting further investigation. Context Nutrition plays a critical role in adolescence. Adolescents are vulnerable to the impact of different factors that distance them from healthy habits, increasing their risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. Qualitative methodologies allow for a better understanding of these factors. Objective This systematic review aims to consolidate qualitative research evidence from the past 10 years to analyze the facilitators and barriers influencing adolescents' eating behaviors. Data Sources Databases searched for relevant studies were Scopus, Medline/PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Data Extraction A total of 4176 records were identified. The authors used the GRADE-CERQual (Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research) quality-assessment tool. Results Fifty articles with qualitative or mixed methodologies were finally included. The most applied techniques were focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The factors influencing adolescents' diets were classified into 4 dimensions: individual, social, community, and macrosystem factors. The most influential were the following—(1) at the individual level: gender (facilitator or barrier), taste and appearance of food (barrier), and lack of time (barrier); (2) at the social level: parents' and caregivers' influence (facilitator or barrier), peer group influence (barrier), and socioeconomic position (barrier); (3) at the community level: school food environment (facilitator or barrier), neighborhood food environment (barrier), household food environment (facilitator or barrier), food insecurity (barrier), and availability and affordability of ultra-processed foods (barrier); and (4) at the macrosystem level: digital tools (facilitator or barrier). Conclusions This systematic review identified several facilitators and barriers influencing eating behaviors among adolescents. Qualitative research provides a rich source of knowledge to inform interventions aimed at improving adolescents' diets. Morphological studies typically avoid using osteological samples that derive from captive animals because it is assumed that their morphology is not representative of wild populations. Rearing environments indeed differ between wild and captive individuals. For example, mechanical properties of the diets provided to captive animals can be drastically different from the food present in their natural habitats, which could impact cranial morphology and dental health. Here, we examine morphological differences in the maxillae of wild versus captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) given the prominence of this species in comparative samples used in human evolution research and the key role of the maxilla in such studies. Size and shape were analysed using three‐dimensional geometric morphometric methods based on computed tomography scans of 94 wild and 30 captive specimens. Captive individuals have on average larger and more asymmetrical maxillae than wild chimpanzees, and significant differences are present in their maxillary shapes. A large proportion of these shape differences are attributable to static allometry, but wild and captive specimens still differ significantly from each other after allometric size adjustment of the shape data. Levels of shape variation are higher in the captive group, while the degree of size variation is likely similar in our two samples. Results are discussed in the context of ontogenetic growth trajectories, changes in dietary texture, an altered social environment, and generational differences. Additionally, sample simulations show that size and shape differences between chimpanzees and bonobos (Pan paniscus) are exaggerated when part of the wild sample is replaced with captive chimpanzees. Overall, this study confirms that maxillae of captive chimpanzees should not be included in morphological or taxonomic analyses when the objective is to characterise the species. Background/Aim(s): Globally, studies have shown that the dental disease burden among persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) is high and can be attributed to lower utilization levels of dental services. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of income and financial subsidies on the utilization of dental care services among persons with IDD in Singapore. Methods: Between August 2020 and August 2021, a cross‐sectional study was conducted via centres offering Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children, special education schools and adult associations in Singapore serving persons with IDD. A sample of 591 caregivers of children and adults with IDD completed the survey. Data on sociodemographic information, oral health behaviours and dental utilization were collected. Financial subsidy status was assessed by the uptake of a government‐funded, opt‐in Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) for low‐income families that provided a fixed subsidy amount for dental services in the primary care setting. Statistical analysis was carried out using univariable, multiple logistic regression and modified Poisson regression. Propensity score matching was carried out in R version 4.0.2 to assess the impact of financial subsidies on oral health care utilization among persons with IDD. Results: Compared to those with lower gross monthly household incomes, the adjusted prevalence ratios of having at least one dental visit in the past year, having at least one preventive dental visit in the past year, and visiting the dentist at least once a year for persons with IDD with gross monthly household incomes of above SGD$4000 were 1.28 (95% CI 1.08–1.52), 1.48 (95% CI 1.14–1.92) and 1.36 (95% CI 1.09–1.70), respectively. Among those who were eligible for CHAS Blue subsidies (247 participants), 160 (62.0%) took up the CHAS Blue scheme and 96 (35.4%) visited the dentist at least yearly. There was no statistically significant difference in the utilization of dental services among individuals enrolled in the CHAS Blue subsidy scheme among those eligible for CHAS Blue subsidies. Conclusion: Higher household income was associated with a higher prevalence of dental visits in the past year, preventive dental visits in the past year, and at least yearly dental visits. Endemic to Patagonia, the White-throated Caracara (Phalcoboenus albogularis) is one of the least studied caracara species, with several aspects of its ecology, such as breeding biology and diet, largely unexplored. Using citizen science records and opportunistic observations, we obtained data on the breeding biology, nest sites, and diet of the species in Chile and Argentina. Nests were in rocky outcrops and cliffs, and aspects of diet corroborated others' observations that this species feeds on live prey as well as carrion. The species' nesting season apparently begins in September and ends in March, with some regional variation. The modal brood size is two, and many nests apparently are used across multiple years. Using citizen science data, we created the first distribution models for the White-throated Caracara, one for the breeding season and one for the winter season. The species predominantly occupies the highland plateaus of western Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, and the Andes Range from around 40° south to southern Tierra del Fuego. The models indicate a mostly consistent distribution without significant latitudinal changes between seasons and, apparently, only a limited transition to lower-elevation areas east of the Andes in winter. In both seasons, this caracara is associated primarily with barren rocky areas and Andean and sub-Andean herbaceous steppe—all open environments—rather than forested areas as has been thought previously. This study provides new knowledge of this regional endemic yet the species remains a poorly known raptor in southern South America. Additional and on-the-ground field research would likely produce benefits when addressing species-related conservation issues. Aprovechando información de plataformas de ciencia ciudadana y observaciones oportunistas, en este trabajo recopilamos información sobre biología reproductiva, sitios de nidificación y dieta de la especie en Chile y Argentina. Los nidos estuvieron en roquedos y acantilados y los datos de dieta corroboran observaciones previas que indican que la especie se alimenta de presas vivas y carroña. La temporada reproductiva de P. albogularis comienza aparentemente en septiembre y termina en marzo, aunque con cierta variación regional. El tamaño de nidada modal fue de dos polluelos. Muchos nidos son usados todos los años por la especie que se reproduce frecuentemente con éxito. Utilizando datos de ciencia ciudadana, creamos los primeros modelos de distribución de la especie, tanto de la época reproductiva como de la época invernal. La especie ocupa principalmente las mesetas de altura del oeste de la provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina, así como la cordillera de los Andes desde aproximadamente los 40° S hasta el sur de Tierra del Fuego. Los modelos indicaron una distribución consistente y sin cambios latitudinales entre temporadas y, aparentemente, solo una transición limitada hacia zonas más bajas de los Andes durante el invierno. En ambas temporadas, los ambientes donde P. albogularis fue observado con mayor probabilidad fueron las zonas rocosas sin vegetación y las estepas herbáceas andinas y subandinas, todos ambientes abiertos, totalmente distintos a las áreas boscosas que históricamente se consideraban su principal hábitat. The Mountain Caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus) and White-throated Caracara (Phalcoboenus albogularis) are two sister species each with a limited distribution along the Andes from Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego. They occur in remote areas and are among the least known caracaras, and their diet has been little studied, particularly for the White-throated Caracara. We investigated the diet of these two caracaras by analyzing photographs provided by citizen scientists and obtained from the Macaulay Library (eBird) and iNaturalist platforms. We obtained 43 photographs for Mountain Caracara and 42 photographs for White-throated Caracara that could be used to identify food items. Photographs of the Mountain Caracara showed the species mainly feeding on carrion, often of domestic animals, followed by human foods and garbage. Photographs of the White-throated Caracara showed this species mainly feeding on carrion and garbage. However, we did find photographs of both caracaras feeding on wild species including camelids, rodents, birds, lizards, and some invertebrates. Further research should investigate possible effects of human-derived items in the diet of these caracaras, such as malnutrition due to consumption of inappropriate foods, and effects of ingestion of plastics and toxic substances. Estas especies ocupan hábitats remotos y son de las menos conocidas dentro del grupo de los caracaras. Consecuentemente, su dieta ha sido poco estudiada, particularmente en P. albogularis. Investigamos la dieta de estos caracaras mediante el análisis de las fotografías disponibles en las plataformas de ciencia ciudadana iNaturalist y Macaulay Library (eBird). Obtuvimos 43 fotografías de P. megalopterus y 42 fotografías de P. albogularis que permitieron identificar componentes de la dieta. P. megalopterus se alimentó principalmente de carroña, frecuentemente de animales domésticos, seguido de restos de comida y basura de origen antrópico. Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) are diurnal, opportunistic raptors that feed on a great variety of prey, including carrion, nestlings, and eggs. In the coastal area of Chubut province, Argentina, they co-occur with White-headed Steamer-Ducks (Tachyeres leucocephalus), an endemic and vulnerable species. Here we report observations of Crested Caracaras on nests of White-headed Steamer-Ducks in the Interjurisdictional Marine Park in Northern San Jorge Gulf, Chubut, Argentina. We looked for steamerduck nests on islands and islets in the park from September to December in 2015 and 2016. We installed camera traps at 21 nests and operated them for a total of 166 camera-nights. We detected Crested Caracaras 27 times, at 15% and 37% of the duck nests in 2015 and 2016, respectively. We corroborated predation on eggs after visiting nests, although we were not able to see Caracaras directly eating eggs on pictures. The timing of Crested Caracara visits to duck nests corresponded with the recess pattern (i.e., periods of time when nest is unattended during incubation) of the White-headed Steamer-Ducks. Crested Caracaras are generally visual predators and they likely observe the steamerducks and take advantage of their incubation patterns. Our camera data contribute to improving our understanding of Crested Caracara ecology and potential limiting factors on White-headed Steamer-Duck nesting success. En la costa marina de la provincia del Chubut (Argentina), se reproduce en simpatría y sintopía con el pato Tachyeres leucocephalus, una especie endémica y vulnerable. Aquí reportamos la presencia y el patrón de actividad de C. plancus sobre los nidos de T. leucocephalus en el Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino del norte del Golfo San Jorge (Chubut, Argentina). Durante septiembre y diciembre de 2015 y 2016 buscamos nidos de T. leucocephalus en las islas e islotes dentro del parque. A través del uso de cámaras trampa instaladas en 21 nidos por un período total de 166 nochescámara, registramos un total de 27 detecciones. Detectamos la presencia de C. plancus en el 15% y 37% de los nidos en 2015 y 2016, respectivamente. Corroboramos la depredación de los huevos con nuestras visitas, pero no pudimos ver directamente en las fotos a C. plancus comiendo huevos. El momento de las visitas de C. plancus a los nidos de patos coincidió con el patrón de recesos de T. leucocephalus. Aim: Emerging evidence points to a two‐way relationship between periodontitis and dietary choices and, thus, nutrition. This study aimed to assess the potential cause–effect relationship between the periodontitis stage, loss of functional tooth units (FTUs), masticatory function, and intake of different food groups using path analysis. Materials and Methods: A single calibrated examiner determined the periodontitis stage of a consecutive sample of 241 Chinese subjects reporting for tooth replacement. Their masticatory function was quantified by the mixing ability of a two‐colour chewing gum. Validated food frequency questionnaires were used to calculate the intake of 33 food group items by an experienced calibrated rater. After verification of assumptions, visual structural equation modeling was performed with Amos 23. The consistency of results and the potential modifying effect of age were assessed in 9043 subjects from the NHANES database. Results: Highly significant models were constructed using periodontitis stage and age as exogenous factors. Periodontitis stage diagnosis significantly affected the number of posterior FTUs and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL, path coefficient [PC] = –0.55 and −0.20, p <.05, respectively). In the model, FTUs also had an independent effect on OHRQoL (PC = 0.23, p <.05). FTUs determined the level of masticatory function (PC = –0.38, p <.05), which in turn affected vegetable intake but not fruit or meat intake (PC = –0.18, p <.0.5, PC = 0.06, NS and PC = 0.11, NS, respectively). The effect of age was significant for vegetable and meat intake and was also correlated with periodontitis stage diagnosis. Analysis of the NHANES database confirmed the negative impact of periodontitis on the number of occluding pairs and vegetable consumption for the 18–44, 45–60 and >60 age groups. Conclusions: Periodontitis showed a potential cause–effect pathway affecting vegetable intake across cultures and age groups. The size of the effect is potentially of clinical and public health significance. Based on previous work, we developed the comic "A healthy liver will always deliver!" to raise awareness about Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and promote healthy lifestyles. An online pre-post questionnaire design demonstrated an increase in health-threat beliefs regarding NAFLD among the general public, as well as response efficacy and self-efficacy beliefs, normative and control beliefs regarding the maintenance of preventive strategies involving healthy diets and active lifestyles, after interaction with the comic's narrative. This effect was more evident in women. Furthermore, although we could not perform all the ideal controls during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the online strategy attracted mostly university education-level subjects, the comic seemed relatable and engaging. Background: Shift workers, compared to day workers, are more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Currently, there is no tailored programme of dietary support available to either shift workers living with T2D or employers. Methods: An intervention development consultation workshop was convened in June 2023 with the aim of evaluating potential interventions to identify those with a potential to take forward for further development. Findings from prior formative research into factors influencing dietary behaviour in shift workers with T2D were mapped to potential interventions addressing the barriers and enablers to healthy eating reported by shift workers with T2D. The findings of the Shift‐Diabetes Study were presented in the context of the COM‐B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour) theoretical framework of behaviour change. Three interventions in turn were presented to attendees: (1) Educational resources and structured education, (2) Increasing availability and accessibility of food on a night shift and (3) Biofeedback and tailored advice. Seven workshop attendees were invited to express their thoughts, using the APEASE criteria (Affordability, Practicability, Effectiveness, Acceptability, Side‐effects/Safety, Equity) to guide the discussion. The workshop was conducted online and recorded, and transcripts were thematically coded to the APEASE framework. Results/Conclusions: The workshop highlighted the importance of multilevel interventions to support dietary behaviour change in this occupational group. Priority actions identified include (i) understanding barriers to 24/7 food availability, (ii) including shift workers in clinical diabetes studies and (iii) research to understand the effectiveness of continuous glucose monitoring in shift workers with T2D. Background: The UK Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT) study was replicated in an Australian primary care setting. This qualitative study aimed to explore and understand the perceptions and experiences of both participants and healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the DiRECT‐Australia Type 2 Diabetes Remission Service. Methods: All participants and HCPs delivering the service were invited to participate in semi‐structured interviews via online videoconferencing. The interview guides explored perceptions and experiences in DiRECT‐Australia, covering aspects such as barriers and facilitators to recruitment and participation, motivations and challenges across service phases, adequacy of support provided and the overall acceptability of the service. All interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Eight DiRECT‐Australia participants and six HCPs (three general practitioners, two practice nurses and one dietitian) participated. Four overarching themes were identified: (1) Enablers and barriers to recruitment and continuous participation in DiRECT‐Australia; (2) Motivators and overcoming barriers across the total diet replacement, food reintroduction and weight maintenance phases; (3) Importance of participant‐HCP interactions and continuous support; (4) Acceptance and long‐term need for DiRECT‐Australia. Adherence to total diet replacement was less challenging than anticipated by participants. Transitioning to the food reintroduction phase was difficult but overcome through HCP support. DiRECT‐Australia was well accepted by both participants and HCPs, and participants expressed willingness to continue with the service, if provided on a long‐term basis. Conclusions: Both participants and HCPs were highly interested in the new diabetes remission service set up in an Australian primary care setting. The acceptability of DiRECT‐Australia was underscored by participants emphasising the effectiveness of the service in achieving significant weight loss and diabetes remission. There is a need for long‐term and wider implementation of the service to ensure that anyone with recent onset type 2 diabetes is offered the best possible chance to achieve remission. Purpose: Over the past few decades, the incidence of cancer among adolescents and young adults (AYA) has been increasing. The impact of behaviors, such as physical activity (PA) and nutrition, on disease progression, prognosis, and overall health and quality of life for AYA cancer survivors is of significant importance. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PA and diet interventions for AYA cancer survivors and to critically evaluate existing literature, gaps, and limitations. Methods: A search of literature was conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar following the PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-two studies were included from online databases from 2012 to 2022, 13 of which were randomized controlled trials. Results: Most interventions were related to PA, with only four studies including nutrition or Diet interventions. The interventions were generally feasible and acceptable to AYA cancer survivors, and digitally based PA interventions were commonly used. PA interventions mainly comprised aerobic and resistance training and were individualized. Overall, this review found various PA and diet interventions for AYA cancer survivors that were feasible and well-accepted, but gaps in knowledge and design still exist. Background: Pregnancy provides a privileged and opportune moment to implement interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors and significantly improving perinatal outcomes. The Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBES) can be used to assess health promoting behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and mental health. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the HLBES in Portuguese pregnant women. Methods: A methodological study was conducted on a convenience sample of 192 pregnant women receiving prenatal care. After cross-cultural adaptation, an exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency assessment were carried out to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale. Data collected included the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale to assess the HLBES' criterion validity. Results: Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation yielded 2 subscales that explained 45.23% of the total variance. The scale revealed an overall internal consistency of 0.78 and a good criterion validity with the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale (r = 0.65, P <.01). Conclusion: Our results suggest that the HLBES is an instrument for reporting healthy lifestyle behaviors in Portuguese pregnant women; however, further studies are recommended. Aim: Type 1 diabetes results from autoimmune events influenced by environmental variables, including changes in diet. This study investigated how feeding refined versus unrefined (aka 'chow') diets affects the onset and progression of hyperglycaemia in non‐obese diabetic (NOD) mice. Methods: Female NOD mice were fed either unrefined diets or matched refined low‐ and high‐fat diets. The onset of hyperglycaemia, glucose tolerance, food intake, energy expenditure, circulating insulin, liver gene expression and microbiome changes were measured for each dietary group. Results: NOD mice consuming unrefined (chow) diets developed hyperglycaemia at similar frequencies. By contrast, mice consuming the defined high‐fat diet had an accelerated onset of hyperglycaemia compared to the matched low‐fat diet. There was no change in food intake, energy expenditure, or physical activity within each respective dietary group. Microbiome changes were driven by diet type, with chow diets clustering similarly, while refined low‐ and high‐fat bacterial diversity also grouped closely. In the defined dietary cohort, liver gene expression changes in high‐fat‐fed mice were consistent with a greater frequency of hyperglycaemia and impaired glucose tolerance. Conclusion: Glucose intolerance is associated with an enhanced frequency of hyperglycaemia in female NOD mice fed a defined high‐fat diet. The aetiology and progression of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) resulted from a complex sequence of events generated both from genetic and epigenetic processes. In the current research, the effect of methyl‐supplemented nutrition on the development of SLE was studied in the pristane‐induced mouse model of the disease. The results clearly demonstrated decreased anti‐dsDNA antibody and proteinuria levels, modulation of cytokines and protected renal structures in the group of treated mice. An additional increase in the DNA methylation of mouse B lymphocytes was also observed. The beneficial effect of the diet is due to the methyl‐containing micronutrients with possible anti‐inflammatory and immunomodulating effects on cell proliferation and gene expression. Since these components are responsible for maintaining the physiological methylation level of DNA, the results point to the central role of methylation processes in environmentally triggered lupus. Aim: To assess the risks, benefits, and resource implications of home‐blended food for children with gastrostomy tubes compared with a formula diet. Method: This prospective cohort study of children (aged 0–18 years) collected baseline data on gastrointestinal symptoms, nutritional intake, anthropometric outcomes, parent and child quality of life, and resource use. A propensity score‐weighted generalized linear mixed model was used to compare children receiving a home‐blended versus formula diet. Results: Baseline data were obtained for 180 children (2019–2021; 107 males, 73 females; mean age 9 years 7 months [SD 4 years 5 months]). Children receiving a home‐blended diet (n = 104) had similar diagnoses and age but more lived in areas of lower deprivation and parental education was higher compared to the parents of children receiving a formula diet (n = 76). Children receiving home‐blended diets had significantly better gastrointestinal scores than those receiving formula diets (B = 13.8, p < 0.001). The number of gut infections and tube blockages were similar between the two groups but with fewer stoma site infections in the group receiving home‐blended food. Children receiving a home‐blended diet had more fibre in their diet compared to children receiving a formula diet. Interpretation: Home‐blended diets should be seen as a safe option for children who are gastrostomy‐fed unless clinically contraindicated. Equality of access to home‐blended diets for children with gastrostomy should be assessed by local clinical teams. Summary: Background: There is limited evidence on the associations of dietary factors and patterns with risk of later‐onset ulcerative colitis (UC) in Chinese adults. Aims: To investigate the associations of dietary factors and patterns with risk of later‐onset UC in Chinese. Methods: The prospective China Kadoorie Biobank cohort study recruited 512,726 participants aged 30–79. Dietary habits were assessed using food frequency questionnaires. Dietary patterns were derived by factor analysis with a principal component method. Cox regression analysis was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: During a median follow‐up of 12.1 years, 312 cases of newly diagnosed UC were documented (median age of diagnosis 60.1 years). Egg consumption was associated with higher risk of UC (HR for daily vs. never or rarely: 2.29 [95% CI: 1.26–4.16]), while spicy food consumption was inversely associated with risk of UC (HR: 0.63 [0.45–0.88]). The traditional northern dietary pattern, characterised by high intake of wheat and low intake of rice, was associated with higher risk of UC (HR for highest vs. lowest quartile of score: 2.79 [1.93–4.05]). The modern dietary pattern, characterised by high intake of animal‐origin foods and fruits, was associated with higher risk of UC (HR: 2.48 [1.63–3.78]). Population attributable fraction was 13.04% (7.71%–19.11%) for daily/almost daily consumption of eggs and 9.87% (1.94%–18.22%) for never/rarely consumption of spicy food. Maintaining healthy behaviors is challenging. Based upon previous reports that in North Carolina (NC), USA, overweight/obese clergy lost weight during a two-year religiously tailored health intervention, we described trajectories of diet, physical activity, and sleep. We investigated whether behavior changes were associated with weight and use of health-promoting theological messages. Improvements were observed in sleep, calorie-dense food intake, and physical activity, with the latter two associated with weight loss. While theological messages were well-retained, their relationship with behaviors depended on the specific message, behavior, and timing. The purpose of this article is to reconcile the hypotheses that: (1) brain evolution occurred due to a change in diet, and (2) it occurred due to pressures related to understanding more and more about the underlying causes, such as understanding increasingly complex manipulative and cooperative intentions on the part of the other, as well as understanding reality itself (and how to interact with it beyond group issues). I argue that the ingestion of fat, a highly energy-efficient food, would have unlocked the evolutionary process that culminated in the emergence of the practice of reasoning about underlying causes; and that the consolidation of such a practice resulted in a continuous pressure to increase cognition about "whys"; so that many explanations ended up imposing the need for additional ones, and with that came a high level of awareness and the need for the brain to evolve not only in terms of providing a higher level of cognition but also in size. Aim: This study investigated diabetes self‐care activities and the factors associated with these activities in people diagnosed with SMI in a hospital setting. Methods: A cross‐sectional correlational study was conducted among 126 people diagnosed with comorbid SMI and T2DM in Taipei, Taiwan, between October 2020 and April 2021. Data were collected using self‐report questionnaires and a chart review. Three‐step hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with diabetes self‐care behaviours. Results: Diabetes self‐care behaviours in people diagnosed with SMI were suboptimal overall. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that age (β = 0.18, p =.037) and self‐efficacy (β = 0.27, p =.004) significantly associated with diabetes self‐care behaviours. Discussion: Self‐efficacy is the strongest predictor of self‐care behaviours among people diagnosed with comorbid SMI and T2DM. Implications for Practice: Mental health professionals should focus on enhancing confidence in managing comorbid diabetes in people diagnosed with comorbid SMI, especially young people and those with newly diagnosed T2DM. Background: Skeletal craniofacial morphology can be influenced by changes in masticatory muscle function, which may also change the functional profile of the muscles. Objectives: To investigate the effects of age and functional demands on the expression of Myosin Heavy‐Chain (MyHC) isoforms in representative jaw‐closing and jaw‐opening muscles, namely the masseter and digastric muscles respectively. Methods: Eighty‐four male Wistar rats were divided into four age groups, namely an immature (n = 12; 4‐week‐old), early adult (n = 24; 16‐week‐old), adult (n = 24; 26‐week‐old) and mature adult (n = 24; 38‐week‐old) group. The three adult groups were divided into two subgroups each based on diet consistency; a control group fed a standard (hard) diet, and an experimental group fed a soft diet. Rats were sacrificed, and masseter and digastric muscles dissected. Real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to compare the mRNA transcripts of the MyHC isoforms—Myh7 (MyHC‐I), Myh2 (MyHC‐IIa), Myh4 (MyHC‐IIb) and Myh1 (MyHC‐IIx)—of deep masseter and digastric muscles. Results: In the masseter muscle, hypofunction increases Myh1 (26, 38 weeks; p <.0001) but decreases Myh4 (26 weeks; p =.046) and Myh2 (26 weeks; p <.0001) expression in adult rats. In the digastric muscle, hypofunction increases Myh1 expression in the mature adult rats (38 weeks; p <.0001), while Myh2 expression decreases in adult rats (26 weeks; p =.021) as does Myh4 (26 weeks; p =.001). Myh7 expression is increased in the digastric muscle of mature adult rats subjected to hypofunction (38 weeks; p = <.0001), while it is very weakly expressed in the masseter. Conclusion: In jaw‐opening and jaw‐closing muscles, differences in myosin expression between hard‐ and soft‐diet‐fed rats become evident in adulthood, suggesting that long‐term alteration of jaw function is associated with changes in the expression of MyHC isoforms and potential fibre remodelling. Objective: That we all weigh something is a fact of life, yet the material reality of weight is refracted through multiple layers of surveillance revealing contradictions in experience and understanding, depending on one's vantage point. We explored the complexities of weight with the specific aim of furthering understanding of this multifaceted surveillance. Methods and Measures: We used hermeneutics, the philosophy and practice of interpretation, as the method of inquiry. Ten experts by experience and seven professional experts participated in interviews, which were audio- recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Interpretations were developed through group discussions among the eight authors and reiterative writing. Results: Using the metaphor of optics, we demonstrate how the interplay of the panopticon (the few watching the many) and synopticon (the many watching the few) help us gain a deeper understanding of weight through "fitting in," being "captured by numbers," "dieting: the tyrannic tower," and "the male gaze." Conclusion: Monitoring and judging body weight have become so normative in Western society that "weight watching" practices are synonymous with good citizenship and moral character. This study offers insight about how weight is conceptualized in personal and professional contexts, with implications for body image, dieting, eating disorders, public health, and weight bias. Health literacy (HL), skills for accessing, appraising and using health information in health decision-making is implicated in adolescents' health behaviors. HL skills develop through scaffolding, modeling, practice and opportunity. Therefore, adolescents' HL skills are likely closely tied to parents' HL and health behaviors. Yet, no studies have examined the dyadic interdependence of the relationship between HL and health behaviors between parents and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to determine the interdependence of adolescents' and parents' HL and health behaviors. Data were collected from 300 parent-adolescent dyads via Qualtrics Panel. Dyads completed identical measures of their HL, diet, physical activity, sedentary activity, cigarette-smoking, vaping, and alcohol binge-drinking behaviors. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlations and the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. Within-dyad correlations were significant for HL and all health behaviors assessed. After controlling for covariates and partner effects, adolescents' HL was related to their sugar-sweetened beverage intake, sedentary activity, and substance use. After controlling for covariates and actor effects, adolescents' HL was related to parents' sedentary activity, binge-drinking, and vaping while parents' HL was related to adolescents' sedentary activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding milk replacer (MR) with varying levels of lactose and the increased supply of total solids (from 750 to 960 g/d) on performance, blood metabolites, and health of Holstein male calves during the preweaning period. Methods: Forty newborn Holstein calves (10 per treatment) were blocked according to birth weight and date of birth and distributed in a randomized block design to different liquid diets: Whole milk powder (WMP) diluted to 125 g/L solids; MR with 48% lactose (48L), diluted to 125 g/L solids; MR with 53% lactose (53L), diluted to 125 g/L solids; 53L MR corrected to 160 g/L solids (16TS) by the inclusion of a solid corrector. Calves were individually housed in wood hutches, fed 6 L/d of the liquid diet, and had free water and starter concentrate access. The study lasted 56 days. Results: Liquid diet intake was higher for calves fed 16TS than for other treatments. Calves fed 16TS presented higher protein and fat intake, followed by those fed WMP and the 48L or 53L MRs. Lactose intake was higher for 16TS-fed calves, followed by 53L, 48L, and WMP-fed calves. Starter and total dry matter intake did not differ among liquid diets. The average daily gain was higher for 16TS than 48L-fed calves, with the other treatments being intermediary. The lowest feed efficiency was observed for calves fed 48L. No effects on health were observed, as well as on selected blood metabolites, except for albumin concentration, which was higher for calves fed 16TS and WMP. Conclusion: Higher total solids content (160 g/L) in MR increases nutrient intake and consequently improves the performance of dairy calves. Studies show that interpersonal relations impact behavior change. Yet, a comprehensive review of their efficacy remains unclear. This systematic review examines the efficacy of dyadic and group-based studies that intervened on primary endpoints: diet, PA, and weight loss in adults and their networks. We searched five databases for eligible articles published from 1980 to present. Final inclusion and risk of bias were independently determined and agreed upon by two of the paper's co-authors. Nine dyads and twelve group-based studies were eligible. Of the studies, 36% (4/11) of PA studies, 60% (3/5) of diet studies and 57% (8/14) of studies with weight loss as primary outcomes, reported significant findings. Compared to dyadic interventions, a greater proportion of group-based interventions demonstrated efficacy in PA gain and weight loss as outcomes. Approximately 43% of studies demonstrated low to moderate methodological quality. This systematic review synthesized the evidence of dyadic and group studies that intervened on PA, diet, and weight in adults from the same network. Moderately-high risk of bias and lack of diverse representation restricts inferences around efficacy. High-quality rigorous research is needed to understand the efficacy of dyadic and group-based interventions in addressing these co-occurring endpoints of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
