Objectives This study aimed to examine age, period, and cohort effects contributing to the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension among older Koreans. Additionally, it sought to investigate how sociodemographic characteristics interact with period and cohort effects to influence the disease prevalence. Methods Using the 2004–2020 data from the National Survey of Older Koreans, a nationally representative sample of older adults aged 65 or older, hierarchical age–period–cohort cross-classified random effects models (HAPC-CCREMs) were employed to estimate separate age, period, and cohort components of the recent trends in diabetes and hypertension. Sociodemographic characteristics were tested for their interactions with period and cohort effects. Results Significant period effects were observed, indicating a steady increase in the likelihood of being diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension over time. Age effects revealed a quadratic trend, with disease risks generally increasing with age, but the rate of increase diminishing at older ages. Cohort effects exhibited an inverted U-shaped pattern, with higher risks observed in the 1930s and early 1940s cohorts compared to earlier and later cohorts. Gender and educational attainment emerged as significant moderators. Women than men born in the early 1930s exhibited higher risks of diabetes and hypertension, whereas individuals with lower educational attainment showed a steadily increasing risk of hypertension over time. Discussion The results underscore the complex interplay of age, period, and cohort effects in shaping disease prevalence among older Koreans. Our findings highlight the importance of considering historical context and sociodemographic factors in understanding disease trends and designing targeted interventions to mitigate health disparities. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus (DM) among Brazilian adults. Cross-sectional study. Data of 75,860 Brazilian adults (≥18 years) were collected using the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (Vigitel) (2020–2023). Variables assessed included self-reported medical diagnosis of DM, sociodemographic factors (sex, age, schooling, marital status) and DM risk factors (regular consumption of sweetened beverages (≥5 times/week), infrequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, and beans (<5 times/week), insufficient physical activity, prolonged screen time on cell phones, computers, tablets (CCT), and television (TV), smoking, heavy episodic drinking, excess weight, and obesity). Logistic regression models estimated crude and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) (adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics) for the association between the risk factors and the presence of DM. The overall prevalence of self-reported DM in the population was 9.2%. There was a lower chance of regular consumption of sweetened beverages (aOR 0.79; 95% CI: 0.65–0.97) and heavy episodic drinking (aOR 0.77; 95% CI: 0.65–0.93) and a greater chance of insufficient physical activity (aOR 1.40; 95% CI: 1.25–1.55), prolonged TV screen time (aOR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09–1.36), excess weight (aOR 1.62; 95% CI: 1.44–1.82) and obesity (aOR 1.87; 95% CI: 1.67–2.10) among individuals with DM. There was a lower chance of regular consumption of sweetened beverages and heavy episodic drinking among individuals with DM and a greater chance of insufficient physical activity, prolonged TV screen time, excess weight, and obesity, among that. Considering the significant involvement of insulin resistance in various forms of cancer, it is postulated that the implementation of a diabetic diet, which effectively mitigates insulin resistance, may potentially decrease the susceptibility to breast cancer among female individuals. In this literature review, a comprehensive electronic search of different databases was done using the keywords "Breast cancer" OR "breast tumor" OR "Breast Neoplasms" AND "diet" OR "diabetic diet" OR "Low Carbohydrate Diet" OR "Carbohydrate restricted diet" OR "High-Protein Low-Carbohydrate Diet" OR "diabetes risk reduction diet" OR "DRRD" as the main keywords. Research has shown that the DRRD score is inversely correlated with breast cancer risk. In fact, for every three-point increase in the DRRD score, the risk of breast cancer decreases by 7%. Studies have shown that higher DRRD scores in breast cancer patients are associated with a reduced risk of cancer and a higher chance of survival. The results of this study indicate a positive correlation between a higher level of adherence to the diabetes risk reduction diet (DRRD) and improved survival rates. Psychiatric disorders and diabetes are highly associated in psychiatric and primary care settings. The purpose of the current article is to examine the risk factors for diabetes among individuals being treated for psychiatric disorders in mental health care settings. Guidelines for promotion of healthy lifestyles, screening for risk factors, early identification and treatment of prediabetes, and collaborative care to manage the disease are discussed. Simple Summary: Diabetes and cancer are major global health problems that cause significant illness and death. Many cancer patients also have diabetes, which complicates their treatment, especially if surgery is needed. This review highlights the link between diabetes and cancer. It looks into how cancer treatments can worsen blood sugar control, examines the risks that surgery holds for patients with both conditions, and outlines the strategies that can be used to manage diabetes around the time of surgery. More research is needed to provide new strategies that can reduce complications following surgery in patients with diabetes and cancer. Background: Both diabetes and cancer are major global health issues that are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. There is a high prevalence of diabetes among cancer patients, many of whom require a surgical procedure. This review focuses on the operative complications in patients with diabetes and cancer, and the perioperative management of diabetes in cancer patients. Methodology: A literature search of articles in English—published between January 2010 and May 2024—was carried out using the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The search primarily focused on the operative complications in patients with diabetes and cancer, and perioperative management strategies. Results: The relationship between cancer and diabetes is complex; cancer patients have a high risk of developing diabetes, while diabetes is a risk factor for certain cancers. In addition, various cancer therapies can induce or worsen diabetes in susceptible patients. Many individuals with cancer and diabetes require surgery, and due to underlying diabetes, they may have elevated risks for operative complications. Optimal perioperative management for these patients includes managing perioperative glycemia and other comorbid illnesses, adjusting diabetic and cancer treatments, optimizing nutrition, minimizing the duration of fasting, supporting early mobilization, and providing patient education to enable self-management. Conclusions: While evidence is limited, optimal perioperative management for patients with both diabetes and cancer is necessary in order to reduce surgical complications. Background: Cushing's syndrome (CS) encompasses various causes of hypercortisolism including adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secreting pituitary adenoma with or without bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, an adrenal adenoma or carcinoma, ectopic ACTH or corticotrophin‐releasing hormone (CRH) secretion by a neoplasm or exogenous corticosteroid therapy. The diagnosis of CS in pregnancy presents a challenge due to overlapping clinical features of pregnancy (weight gain, striae, acne). If untreated, CS in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of maternal and fetal complications. Aims: With fewer than 250 cases currently published, we aim to review the clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, management, and outcomes of patients with CS in pregnancy to help optimise our clinical practice. Materials and methods: This is a single‐centre, retrospective review of woman with documented hypercortisolism receiving antenatal care at a tertiary maternity hospital in Perth between 2006 to 2022. Data were collated from electronic and chart reviews. OMNI calculator was used for birthweight calculations. Local ethics and patient consent were obtained. Results: Five women and seven pregnancies were identified. Four women had a pituitary source of ACTH‐dependent CS as confirmed by brain magnetic resonance imaging. One woman had an ectopic source of ACTH. Two women were diagnosed during pregnancy. All pregnancies occurring prior to treatment of the Cushing's disease were complicated by secondary hypertension and diabetes. Conclusion: CS represents a rare and difficult to diagnose condition in pregnancy. When untreated, maternal and fetal outcomes are compromised. There has been a global increase in the older population in recent decades and, as age advances, complex metabolic and epigenetic changes occur in the organism, and these may trigger some health complications commonly found among this population. Additionally, several changes occur in older people that can reduce the dietary intake or the process of nutrient absorption. In this way, tissues with high nutrient requirements are more affected. Hematopoiesis is the process of formation, development, and maturation of blood cells and is a process with a high turnover. This high demand makes the integrity of the hematopoietic process susceptible to various factors that impair physiological function, such as aging and micronutrient bioavailability. Among these micronutrients, Zinc is considered an important micronutrient, playing diverse roles across various tissues and cell types. Some of the alterations in hematopoiesis that appear as a consequence of aging and due to insufficient micronutrient intake are well described in the literature; however, not much is known about how zinc deficiency contributes towards the development of diseases seen in aging. Considering the importance of zinc to act on several biological processes, this narrative review discusses several studies related to the physiological requirements, deficiency, or excess of zinc, including studies in experimental models and humans, and aimed to shed light on the relationship between zinc and the regulation of hematopoietic tissue, exploring possible links between this mineral with common disorders that appear during aging. Objective To investigate the risk of DM and evaluate the impact of SLE therapies on the risk of developing DM in patients with SLE. Methods Electronic database searches of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were performed from inception to February 2023. Cohort and cross-sectional studies that analysed the risk of DM in patients with SLE were included. The associations between diabetes and antirheumatic agents, such as antimalarials and glucocorticoids, were analysed in cohort studies. Data were pooled using fixed- or random-effects meta-analysis to estimate pooled odd ratios (OR), relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023402774). Results A total of 37 studies (23 cross-sectional and 14 cohort studies) involving 266 537 patients with SLE were included. The pooled analyses from cross-sectional studies and cohort studies did not show an increased risk of DM in SLE patients (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 0.87–1.27; P  = 0.63 and RR = 1.32, 95% CI 0.93–1.87; P  = 0.12, respectively). However, several cohort studies consistently demonstrated a reduced risk of diabetes with antimalarials, while glucocorticoid use has been associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. Age, sex, hypertension and immunosuppressants have not been identified as risk factors for DM in SLE patients. Conclusion Although there was no increased risk of DM in patients with SLE compared with controls, HCQ users or adherents had a decreased risk, whereas glucocorticoid users had an increased risk. Alcohol is the most widely abused substance in the world, the leading source of mortality in 15–49‐year‐olds, and a major risk factor for heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, and cancer. Despite this, alcohol is regularly misused in wider society. Consumers of excess alcohol often note a constellation of negative symptoms, known as the alcohol hangover. However, the alcohol hangover is not considered to have long‐term clinical significance by clinicians or consumers. We undertook a critical review of the literature to demonstrate the pathophysiological mechanisms of the alcohol hangover. Hereafter, the alcohol hangover is re‐defined as a manifestation of sickness behavior secondary to alcohol‐induced inflammation, using the Bradford‐Hill criteria to demonstrate causation above correlation. Alcohol causes inflammation through oxidative stress and endotoxemia. Alcohol metabolism is oxidative and increased intake causes relative tissue hypoxia and increased free radical generation. Tissue damage ensues through lipid peroxidation and the formation of DNA/protein adducts. Byproducts of alcohol metabolism such as acetaldehyde and congeners, sleep deprivation, and the activation of nonspecific inducible CYP2E1 in alcohol‐exposed tissues exacerbate free radical generation. Tissue damage and cell death lead to inflammation, but in the intestine loss of epithelial cells leads to intestinal permeability, allowing the translocation of pathogenic bacteria to the systemic circulation (endotoxemia). This leads to a well‐characterized cascade of systemic inflammation, additionally activating toll‐like receptor 4 to induce sickness behavior. Considering the evidence, it is suggested that hangover frequency and severity may be predictors of the development of later alcohol‐related diseases, meriting formal confirmation in prospective studies. In light of the mechanisms of alcohol‐mediated inflammation, research into gut permeability and the gut microbiome may be an exciting future therapeutic avenue to prevent alcohol hangover and other alcohol‐related diseases. Maintaining an ideal weight is difficult for many people. For those who have reduced energy requirements, such as people with a spinal cord injury (SCI), maintaining a healthy weight can be more challenging. There are many barriers, including difficulties with increasing energy expenditure. This article discusses these challenges along with the increased health risks of diabetes and coronary heart disease seen within this population. Through a review of the literature, some practical solutions are provided. These include having weight management programmes starting soon after injury, education including carers', and focusing on behavioural change techniques as part of a multidisciplinary approach to encouraging a healthy lifestyle, lifelong. Introduction: To characterize the impact of rural patients' travel time to obtain healthcare on their reported utilization of preventive healthcare services and personal health outcomes. Methods: Online survey data from rural adults ages 50+ years living in the Northeastern United States were collected from February to August 2021. Study measures included self-reported travel time to obtain healthcare, use of preventive healthcare, and health outcomes. The associations between travel time with use of preventive care and health outcomes were assessed using linear, Poisson, and logistic regression analyses controlling for demographic variables. Results: Our study population included 1052 rural adults, with a mean travel time of 18.5 min (range: 0-60). Travel time was greater for racial/ethnic minority participants and for higher-income participants (both P <.05), but it was not associated with use of preventive healthcare. Greater travel time was associated with poorer mental health and more comorbidities, including cancer and diabetes (all P <.05). Conclusions: Travel time varied by patient demographic factors, and it was associated with mental health and comorbidities. There was no association between travel time and preventive care use, suggesting that other barriers likely contribute to suboptimal use of these services within rural communities. Further research is needed to elucidate the causal pathways linking travel time to mental health and comorbidities within rural communities, as increased travel may exacerbate intrarural health disparities. Diabetes mellitus is a lifelong metabolic disorder that impacts people's well-being and biopsychosocial status. Psychiatric problems and diabetes mellitus have a complex, reciprocal interaction in which one condition affects the other. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of the literature on the psychological effects of diabetes, expound on the evaluation of emotional disorders in the setting of diabetes, and suggest interventions aimed at enhancing both mental and physical health. Diabetes can make daily life complicated and stressful. Frequent blood glucose testing, taking medications on a regular basis, adhering to a tight diet plan, and exercising are some examples of the suggested daily routine of subjects with diabetes. Furthermore, comorbid diseases and typical diabetic complications can have a detrimental impact on quality of life. When mental health conditions coexist with diabetes mellitus, there is a greater likelihood of medication noncompliance, a decreased commitment to diabetes-related self-care, increased functional impairment, inadequate glycemic control, a higher risk of complications, and overall higher healthcare expenses. Thus, evaluation of the mental health status of patients with diabetes is crucial. When treating psychological issues and psychiatric disorders, a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach should be taken, and where appropriate, psychopharmacological therapies or psychotherapy should be applied. The goal of continuous education and assistance for self-care is to give individuals with the disease the information and abilities they need to control their condition over time. Background: Although several studies have found the relationship between essential elements and diabetes, the studies about the association of essential elements with diabetes diagnosed according to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a sex- and age-specific manner were limited. To investigate the linear and nonlinear relationship of five essential elements including iron (Fe), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) with diabetes, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), and HbA1c and to evaluate the sex- and age-specific heterogeneities in these relationships. Methods: A total of 8392 community-dwelling adults were recruited to complete a questionnaire and undergo checkups of anthropometric parameters and serum levels of five metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg, and Ca). The multivariable logistic and linear regression, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and subgroup analysis were applied to find the associations between the essential elements and the prevalence of diabetes as well as FPG, PPG, and HbA1c. Results: In the multivariable logistic regression and multivariable linear regression, serum Cu was positively associated with FPG, PPG, and HbA1c while serum Mg was significantly inversely correlated with FPG, PPG, HbA1c, and diabetes (all P < 0.001). In the RCS analysis, the non-linear relationship of Cu and diabetes (P < 0.001) was found. In the subgroup analysis, stronger positive associations of Cu with diabetes (P for interaction = 0.027) and PPG (P for interaction = 0.002) were found in younger women. Conclusions: These findings may lead to more appropriate approaches to essential elements supplementation in people with diabetes of different ages and sexes. However, more prospective cohort and experimental studies are needed to probe the possible mechanism of sex- and age-specific associations between serum essential elements and diabetes. The objective of our study was to reanalyse the Ethiopia STEPwise approach to Surveillance Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factors survey (NCD STEPS), using causal path diagrams constructed using expert subject matter knowledge in conjunction with graphical model theory to map the underlying causal network of modifiable factors associated with prediabetes/diabetes and hypertension. We used data from the 2015 Ethiopia NCD STEPS representative cross‐sectional survey (males; n = 3977 and females; n = 5823 aged 15–69 years) and performed directed acyclic graph‐informed logistic regression analyses. In both sexes, a 1‐unit higher in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were positively associated with prediabetes/diabetes (BMI: males: adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.07 [95% confidence interval: 1.0, 1.1], females aOR: 1.03 [1.0, 1.1]; WC: males: aOR: 1.1 [0.9, 1.2], females: aOR: 1.2 [1.1, 1.3]) and hypertension (BMI: males: aOR: 1.2 [1.1, 1.2], females aOR: 1.1 [1.0, 1.1]; WC: males: aOR: 1.6 [1.4, 1.8], females: aOR: 1.3 [1.2, 1.5]). Although residing in urban settings was associated with higher odds of hypertension in both males (aOR: 1.79 [1.49, 2.16]) and females (aOR: 1.70 [1.49, 1.95]), it was only associated with prediabetes/diabetes in males (aOR: 1.56 [1.25, 1.96]). Males and females in pastoralist areas had lower odds of prediabetes/diabetes compared with their agrarian counterparts (males: aOR: 0.27 [0.14, 0.52], females: aOR: 0.31 [0.16, 0.58]). Physical activity was associated with lower odds of prediabetes/diabetes among females (aOR: 0.75 [0.58, 0.97]). Other diet‐related modifiable factors such as consumption of fruit and vegetable, alcohol or salt were not associated with either prediabetes/diabetes or hypertension. Our findings highlight the need to implement interventions that prevent overweight/obesity and nutrition‐related NCDs, particularly in urban areas. Key messages: Body mass index and waist circumference were positively associated with hypertension and prediabetes/diabetes for both sexes. Residing in urban settings was associated with increased odds of hypertension in both sexes, and with prediabetes/diabetes in males. The objective of this study was to identify variables that predict adherence to follow-up visits among people who are positive for diabetes during screening and to investigate barriers to follow-up. A retrospective cohort study linking individual-level registry data was performed. First, we compared the characteristics of attenders and non-attenders. Second, we investigated perceived barriers using a questionnaire in a random sample of people who failed to attend the follow-up visit. A total of 27,806 (16.4%) patients attended the follow-up visits. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that individuals aged ≥75 years were more likely to attend follow-up than were those aged 35–45 years (odds ratio [OR]: 1.97 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.82–2.15]), male (OR: 1.15 [95% CI: 1.12–1.18]), obese (OR: 1.36 [95% CI: 1.29–1.43]), had positive family history of diabetes (OR: 1.37 [95% CI: 1.30–1.45]), hypertension (OR: 1.05 [95% CI: 1.01–1.09]), high glucose levels (OR: 1.10 [95% CI: 1.09–1.11]), and high diabetes risk scores (OR: 1.02 [95% CI: 1.02–1.03]) facilitated follow-up. However, overweight (OR: 0.95 [95% CI: 0.92–0.99]) and central obesity (OR: 0.86 [95% CI: 0.83–0.90]) predicted no follow-up. Among nonattenders, diabetes beliefs, time restrictions and distance from home to hospitals were the top three barriers hindering follow-up visits. Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with incident diabetes. However, past studies have often included predominantly male samples, despite important sex and gender differences in diabetes. To address this limitation, this study examined the association between PTSD and diabetes in older Veteran women, a population with a high burden of PTSD. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from 4,105 women (Mage = 67.4 years), participating in the Health of Vietnam-Era Veteran Women's Study (HealthViEWS; Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies Program #579). Participants completed self-report measures of demographics, health conditions, and health behaviors. Information on military service was obtained through service records. A structured clinical interview was conducted by telephone to assess current and lifetime PTSD and other mental health disorders. Weighted descriptive and logistic regression analyses were used to examine associations between PTSD and diabetes. Results: The prevalence of diabetes was 28.4% among women with current full PTSD compared to 23.4%, 17.6%, and 17.5% for current subthreshold, remitted, and no PTSD. In unadjusted analyses, women with current full and subthreshold PTSD were 1.87 [1.49; 2.33] and 1.44 [1.11; 1.85] times more likely to have diabetes compared to women with no PTSD. Remitted PTSD was not associated with increased odds of diabetes. Effects were attenuated but remained significant after adjustment for relevant covariates. Conclusions: Vietnam-era women with current PTSD, including subthreshold symptoms, had a greater likelihood of diabetes compared to women without PTSD. Objective: The complete role of factors contributing to the pathogenesis of childhood obesity remains to be fully elucidated. Limited research has addressed trace elements in the context of child obesity. Our objective was to assess trace element and lead (Pb), copper (Cu) (are toxic metal) levels in both healthy and obese children, and to investigate the potential correlations between these elements and obesity-related anthropometric measurements, lipid profiles, as well as insulin and glucose levels. Materials and Methods: Furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry was employed to measure the concentrations of trace elements in the serum. Additionally, fasting glucose, insulin, and lipid levels were determined in obese children (body mass index ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex), along with 50 healthy children. Only the obesity group underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Results: Significantly reduced levels of Fe, Mg, Zn, and Co were observed in obese children, whereas Cu, Pb, and Mn levels were elevated (P < .001, P <.001, P = .002, P = .008, P <.001, P = .001, P = .007, respectively). Significant positive correlations were found between the 2-hour glucose level in OGTT and Mn (P = .013), as well as between peak insulin and insulin levels at the 30th and 60th minutes, and Fe (P = .001, P = .025, P = .001). Conclusion: This study indicates that an imbalance in trace element levels and the accumulation of Pb may be associated with obesity, while levels of Mn and Fe may be linked to glucose intolerance. Objectives Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) can reduce the risk of incident diabetes, whereas the role of occupational physical activity (OPA) in developing diabetes is still unclear due to conflicting evidence. Moreover, the joint associations of OPA and LTPA with incident diabetes among US workers have not yet been systematically examined. The objective of this study was to assess the independent and joint associations of OPA and LTPA with incident diabetes. Methods This prospective cohort study included 1406 workers free from diabetes at baseline (2004–2006) from the national, population-based Mid-life in the United States (MIDUS) study. Associations of OPA and LTPA at baseline with incident diabetes during 9 years of follow-up were examined using Poisson regression models. High OPA was defined based on engagement in physical demands at work, and high LTPA was defined as participation in moderate or vigorous LTPA at least once per week. Results High OPA was associated with an increased risk of diabetes compared to low OPA (adjusted risk ratios and 95% confidence interval = 1.52 [1.04, 2.22]), while high LTPA was associated with a decreased risk of diabetes compared to low LTPA (0.66 [0.44, 0.97]). Diabetes risk was the highest among workers with high OPA and low LTPA (2.30 [1.30, 4.07]). Conclusions In a national, population-based prospective cohort study of US workers, high OPA was associated with an elevated risk of diabetes, while high LTPA was associated with a decreased diabetes risk. Background: The original 'BETTER' (Building on Existing Tools To Improve Chronic Disease Prevention and Screening in Primary Care) approach consisted of a prevention-focused visit between participants aged 40–65 years and a "Prevention Practitioner" (PP), who empowered the participant to set achievable prevention and screening goals for cancers and chronic diseases. BETTER was successfully adapted for economically deprived communities (BETTER HEALTH) in Canada. Our objective was to conduct a review of guidelines in preparation for adapting the 'BETTER HEALTH' approach for younger adults aged 18–39 years living with lower income, a group known to have earlier mortality due to a higher prevalence of preventable chronic diseases than their peers with higher income. Methods: We searched multiple electronic databases and grey literature for clinical practice guidelines on prevention/screening and included those that met the following criteria: published in English from 2008–2020 in Canada or any of the following countries (Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, United States and England); and addressed prevention or screening. We assessed quality using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II tool and extracted data (publication details, recommendations, and Quality/Level of evidence as reported by authors) from sources with overall scores of 5 or higher. Final recommendations were compiled after harmonization with input from diverse stakeholders (co-investigators, PPs, and the Community Advisory Committee). Results: We included a total of 85 guidelines, and developed a final list of 42 recommendations for 18–39 year-olds across 21 topics. Specific recommendations fell under the following topics: cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, lifestyle (alcohol; healthy nutrition/physical activity); healthy relationships and healthy sexuality, immunization, oral health, social determinants of health, and substance use. Conclusion: We identified evidence-based guidelines on individual-level prevention/screening actions for adults 18–39 years old and relevant for those living with lower income which will directly inform development and implementation of the BETTER LIFE intervention. Objective: To compare how different imputation methods affect the estimates and performance of a prediction model for premature mortality. Study Design and Setting: Sex-specific Weibull accelerated failure time survival models were run on four separate datasets using complete case, mode, single and multiple imputation to impute missing values. Six performance measures were compared to access predictive accuracy (Nagelkerke R2, integrated brier score), discrimination (Harrell's c-index, discrimination slope) and calibration (calibration in the large, calibration slope). Results: The highest proportion of missingness for a single variable was 10.86% for the female model and 8.24% for the male model. Comparing the performance measures for complete case, mode, single and multiple imputation: the Nagelkerke R2 values for the female model was 0.1084, 0.1116, 0.1120 and 0.111–0.1120 with the male model exhibited similar variation of 0.1050, 0.1078, 0.1078 and 0.1078–0.1081. Harrell's c-index also demonstrated small variation with values of 0.8666, 0.8719, 0.8719 and 0.8711–0.8719 for the female model and 0.8549, 0.8548, 0.8550 and 0.8550–0.8553 for the male model. Conclusion: In the scenarios examined in this study, mode imputation performed well when using a population health survey compared to single and multiple imputation when predictive performance measures is the main model goal. To generate unbiased hazard ratios, multiple imputation methods were superior. There was a significant decrease in the percentage of cases who consumed discretionary foods and sweetened juices and soft drinks (24.1%), avoided sweets (75.8%) and pastries (37.1%), (p<0.0001). There were also significant increases in the percentages of participants who use healthy fat (as olive oil) in the case group (78.7%) (p<0.001). There was a significant increase in the percentage of diabetics who followed a diet to lose weight (15%) (p<0.05). The majority of the two study groups were physically inactive (control 95.2% & case 94.2%). Summary: Introduction: Prevalence and risk factors for elevated glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood pressure (BP) are poorly understood among Pacific children. We examined associations of HbA1c and BP in 6–9 year‐olds with body mass index (BMI) at ages 2, 5, and BMI velocity between 2–9 years in Samoa. Methods: HbA1c (capillary blood) and BP were measured in n = 410 Samoan children who were part of an ongoing cohort study. Multilevel models predicted BMI trajectory characteristics. Generalized linear regressions assessed associations of childhood characteristics and BMI trajectories with HbA1c and BP treated as both continuous and categorical outcomes. Primary caregiver‐reported childhood characteristics were used as covariates. Results: Overall, 12.90% (n = 53) of children had high HbA1c (≥5.7%) and 33.17% (n = 136) had elevated BP. BMI at 5‐years and BMI velocity were positively associated with high HbA1c prevalence in males. A 1 kg/m2 per year higher velocity was associated with a 1.71 (95% CI: 1.07, 2.75) times higher prevalence of high HbA1c. In females, higher BMI at 5‐years and greater BMI velocity were associated with higher BP at 6–9 years (95% CI: 1.12, 1.40, and 1.42, 2.74, respectively). Epidemiological studies on air pollution, diabetes, and hypertension conflict. This study examined air pollution, diabetes, and hypertension in adults in 11 metropolitan areas of Iran (2012-2016). Local environment departments and the Tehran Air Quality Control Company provided air quality data. The VIZIT website and Stepwise Approach to Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance study delivered chronic disease data. Multiple logistic regression and generalized estimating equations evaluated air pollution-related diabetes and hypertension. In Isfahan, Ahvaz, and Tehran, PM2.5 was linked to diabetes. In all cities except Urmia, Yasuj, and Yazd, PM2.5 was statistically related to hypertension. O3 was connected to hypertension in Ahvaz, Tehran, and Shiraz, whereas NO2 was not. BMI and gender predict hypertension and diabetes. Diabetes, SBP, and total cholesterol were correlated. Iran's largest cities' poor air quality may promote diabetes and hypertension. Objective: To investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and healthcare-seeking patterns of hypertension and diabetes in Karnataka, India, and to offer knowledge that might guide public health initiatives intended to lessen the burden of these illnesses. Methods: In order to examine the prevalence, risk factors, and healthcare-seeking behaviour of hypertension and diabetes in Karnataka, India, a cross-sectional study is carried out using the information gathered from 26,574 households on 30,455 women and 4516 men (who were in their reproductive period) from the National Family Health Survey (2019–20). The information was summarised using descriptive statistics, which included frequencies and percentages. The association between different risk variables and the likelihood of getting diabetes and hypertension was examined using the chi-squared test and a logistic regression model. Data were analysed using STATA software version 16. Results: The study found that age, gender, education level, religion, and BMI are all significantly associated with hypertension and diabetes (p < 0.001). Tobacco use and alcohol consumption were not significantly associated with hypertension, but tobacco use was significantly associated with diabetes (p < 0.001). However, alcohol consumption was not found to be significantly associated with diabetes whereas the older age groups, males, underweight, overweight and obese, and tobacco use were all associated with increased odds of diabetes. On the other hand, females, secondary education or higher, and alcohol consumption were associated with decreased odds of diabetes. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study found a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in Karnataka, India, and identified several risk factors associated with these diseases. The study also highlighted the need for improved healthcare-seeking behaviour among people with hypertension and diabetes. Background: The association between HIV infection and increased cardiometabolic risk, attributed to chronic inflammation in people living with HIV (PLWH) and/or antiretroviral therapy (ART) effects, has been inconsistent. In this study, we aimed to assess the associations of HIV-related factors with hypertension (HTN) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the potential mediation effects of body mass index (BMI) in the associations between ART use and HTN or T2DM in PLWH in Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 14,119 adult PLWH from Cameroon enrolled in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) between 2016 and 2021. HTN was defined as systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg and/or current use of antihypertensive medication, while T2DM was defined as fasting blood sugar ≥ 126 mg/dL and/or use of antidiabetic medications. Univariable and multivariable multinomial logistic regression analyses examined the associations of factors with HTN alone, T2DM alone, and both (HTN + T2DM). Mediation analyses were conducted to assess the potential mediation roles of BMI, while controlling for age, sex, and smoking. Results: Of the 14,119 participants, 9177 (65%) were women, with a median age of 42 (25th–75th percentiles: 35–51) years. Age > 50 years was associated with HTN alone, T2DM alone, and HTN + T2DM compared to the age group 19–29 years. Men had higher odds of having HTN + T2DM. Overweight and obesity were predictors of HTN alone compared to being underweight. WHO stages II and III HIV disease were inversely associated with HTN alone compared to stage I. The odds of diabetes alone were lower with ART use. BMI partially mediated the association between ART use and hypertension, with a proportion of mediation effect of 49.6% (all p < 0.02). However, BMI did not mediate the relationship between ART use and diabetes. Conclusions: Traditional cardiovascular risk factors were strongly associated with hypertension among PLWH, while HIV-related exposures had smaller associations. BMI partially mediated the association between ART use and hypertension. This study emphasizes the importance of screening, monitoring, and managing HTN and T2DM in older, male, and overweight/obese PLWH. Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the hypothesis that periodontal disease is associated with chronic non-communicable diseases. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the periodontal health condition of the population, based on the community periodontal index, as well as the number of missing teeth and the presence of systemic health conditions. We quantified the association between oral health and the presence of chronic diseases using simple logistic regression, adjusting for confounding factors including age, smoking, and overweight. Results: The study population consisted of 334 volunteers, aged between 19 and 81 years. In patients over 45 years old, periodontal disease was found to be significantly associated with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, in female patients, periodontal disease was significantly associated with hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that periodontal disease is positively and significantly associated with both arterial hypertension and diabetes, independent of potential confounding factors. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the number of patient comorbidities and the delays in seeking treatment for coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods: This longitudinal study utilized secondary data from the Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor (NCDRF) cohort study conducted in Bogor City. Individuals who participated in the NCDRF cohort study and were diagnosed with CHD within the 6-year study period met the inclusion criteria. Respondents who were not continuously monitored up to the 6th year were excluded. The final sample included data from respondents with CHD who participated in the NCDRF cohort study and were monitored for the full 6-year duration. The final logistic regression analysis was conducted on data collected from 812 participants. Results: Among the participants with CHD, 702 out of 812 exhibited a delay in seeking treatment. The risk of a delay in seeking treatment was significantly higher among individuals without comorbidities, with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.735-7.036; p<0.001). Among those with a single comorbidity, the risk of delay in seeking treatment was still notable (OR, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.259-5.418; p=0.010) when compared to those with 2 or more comorbidities. These odds were adjusted for age, sex, education level, and health insurance status. Conclusion: The proportion of patients with CHD who delayed seeking treatment was high, particularly among individuals with no comorbidities. Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) was the only symptom relieving and life-prolonging treatment until transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) became available. This option was introduced to treat old and high-risk patients. In a series of 2500 consecutive patients referred for SAVR with a biologic heart valve (BHV) prosthesis, their age, comorbid conditions, the complexity of the procedure, postoperative outcome, need for resources, and long-term survival were compared in patients before versus after the introduction of TAVI. Although the Carpentier-Edwards valve was used in most patients, the outcomes with respect to several other BHV types were studied. Patients undergoing isolated SAVR (i-SAVR) were studied separately from those who underwent SAVR with a concomitant procedure (c-SAVR). The number of referrals increased over time until 2016, whereafter the reimbursement for TAVI broadened. Age, prior percutaneous coronary interventions, diabetes, and chronic renal disease increased over time in both groups, while atrial fibrillation, the need for emergent SAVR, and other comorbid conditions increased significantly only in the c-SAVR group. Postoperative acute renal injury, conduction defects, and bleeding increased over time in both groups. The need for renal replacement therapy increased in both surgical groups, but this was more pronounced in c-SAVR; the need for a pacemaker implant (p < 0.001), blood products, and reintervention increased only in the c-SAVR group. There was a moderate but non-significant increase in the 30-day mortality for both groups over time. Furthermore, the long-term survival of both groups did not change after the introduction of TAVI. The Carpentier-Edwards Perimount valve showed good long-term results for durability. The Perceval device was used in older patients and showed good hemodynamic results, but the need for a postoperative permanent pacemaker implant was high. The results seem to indicate that a broader reimbursement for TAVI was warranted after its introduction in 2008. Hyperuricemia exhibits a high incidence among individuals with diabetes; however, the significance of hyperuricemia and gout is often underestimated. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of hyperuricemia and gout among community health workers and patients with diabetes. Two questionnaires were designed to investigate knowledge, attitudes, and practices of hyperuricemia and gout among community health workers and patients with diabetes in Chenghua District, Chengdu, from August 2021 to January 2022. A total of 709 community health workers were included, whose average score was 17.74/30. Approximately half of general practitioners (GPs) demonstrated knowledge regarding the target serum uric acid levels for hyperuricemia and gout. Only 11.2% of GPs were fully aware of the preferred medicine for acute gout. The majority of GPs (86.7%) demonstrated limited awareness regarding the contraindications associated with colchicine, while a significant proportion (65.1%) lacked knowledge about the specific classes of drugs that inhibit uric acid synthesis. Among the 508 patients with diabetes included in this survey, 32.3% demonstrated awareness of hyperuricemia, while 60.8% exhibited knowledge regarding gout. The average score attained by these individuals was recorded at 7.21 out of a total of 26 points. The majority of patients with diabetes (87.8%) held the mistaken belief that hyperuricemia definitely led to the development of gout. Almost 66% agreed that a massage or a hot compress could be used when acute gouty arthritis attacks. Retirement is a critical life event for older people. Health scholars have scrutinized the health effects of retirement, but its consequences on age-related diseases and mortality are unclear. We extend this body of research by integrating measurements of biological age, representing the physiological decline preceding disease onset. Using data from the UK Biobank and a fuzzy regression discontinuity design, we estimated the effects of retirement on two biomarker-based biological age measures. Results showed that retirement significantly increases biological age for those induced to retire by the State Pension eligibility by 0.871–2.503 years, depending on sex and specific biological age measurement. Given the emerging scientific discussion about direct interventions to biological age to achieve additional improvements in population health, the positive effect of retirement on biological age has important implications for an increase in the State Pension eligibility age and its potential consequences on population health, public health care policy, and older people's labor force participation. Objective: The very old, although a minority in many populations, experience stroke with distinct risk factors and more complications. We sought to understand the profile, stroke subtypes, risk factors and outcomes among the very old compared to younger stroke patients in our population in the Philippine Neurological Association One Database—Stroke (PNA1DB‐Stroke). Methods: The PNA1DB‐Stroke registry (clinicaltrial.gov NCT04972058) is a multi‐centre, prospective database of all patients hospitalised for transient ischaemic attack or acute stroke in 11 neurology residency training institutions. Results: Of the 6314 patients with stroke, 463 (7%) were 80 years or older, and among them, 320 (69%) were women. Traditional risk factors were more frequent in the very old compared to the younger group (hypertension 76% vs. 66%, diabetes mellitus 26% vs. 19%, previous stroke 14% vs. 10%, atrial fibrillation 13% vs. 3%; p ≤.005), while current smoking (5%) and excess alcohol consumption (4%) were less common than in younger stroke patients (p <.001). Overall, in‐hospital fatality was not remarkably increased in our very old compared to younger stroke patients, with comparable rates between cases of ischaemic stroke (18%) and intracerebral haemorrhage (20%). However, they had longer hospital stay (mean 13.4 ± 17.2 days vs. 10.9 ± 15.4 days, p =.001), had more medical complications (p <.001) and were more functionally dependent at discharge (p <.0001). Conclusions: Very old stroke patients have relatively more risk factors for stroke. In‐hospital fatality rates are comparable between ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes. Background: Breastfeeding resets insulin resistance caused by pregnancy however, studies on the association between breastfeeding and diabetes mellitus (DM) have reported inconsistent results. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the risk of DM according to breastfeeding duration in large-scale population-based retrospective study. In addition, machine-learning prediction models for DM and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were developed to further evaluate this association. Methods: We used the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys database, a nationwide and population-based health survey from 2010 to 2020. We included 15,946 postmenopausal women with a history of delivery, whom we divided into three groups according to the average breastfeeding duration: (1) no breastfeeding, (2) < 12 months breastfeeding, and (3) ≥ 12 months breastfeeding. Prediction models for DM and HbA1c were developed using an artificial neural network, decision tree, logistic regression, Naïve Bayes, random forest, and support vector machine. Results: In total, 2248 (14.1%) women had DM and 14,402 (90.3%) had a history of breastfeeding. The prevalence of DM was the lowest in the < 12 breastfeeding group (no breastfeeding vs. < 12 months breastfeeding vs. ≥ 12 months breastfeeding; 161 [10.4%] vs. 362 [9.0%] vs. 1,725 [16.7%], p < 0.001). HbA1c levels were also the lowest in the < 12 breastfeeding group (HbA1c: no breastfeeding vs. < 12 months breastfeeding vs. ≥ 12 months breastfeeding; 5.9% vs. 5.9% vs. 6.1%, respectively, p < 0.001). After adjustment for covariates, the risk of DM was significantly increased in both, the no breastfeeding (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.29; 95% CI 1.29, 1.62]) and ≥ 12 months of breastfeeding groups (aOR 1.18; 95% CI 1.01, 1.37) compared to that in the < 12 months breastfeeding group. The accuracy and the area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve of the DM prediction model were 0.93 and 0.95, respectively. The average breastfeeding duration was ranked among the top 15 determinants of DM, which supported the strong association between breastfeeding duration and DM. This association was also observed in a prediction model for HbA1c. Conclusions: Women who did not breasted had a higher risk of developing DM than those who breastfed for up to 12 months. Background: Body mass index (BMI) and lipid disorders are both known to be strongly associated with the development of diabetes, however, the indirect effect of lipid parameters in the BMI-related diabetes risk is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of lipid parameters in the association of BMI with diabetes risk. Methods: We assessed the association of diabetes risk with BMI, as well as lipid parameters including high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-CF and LDL-CS), triglycerides(TG), total cholesterol(TC), remnant cholesterol(RC), non-HDL-C, and combined indices of lipid parameters with HDL-C (RC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, TC/HDL-C ratio, non-HDL/HDL-C ratio, LDL/HDL-C ratio) using data from 15,453 subjects in the NAGALA project. Mediation models were used to explore the mediating role of lipid parameters in the association of BMI with diabetes risk, and mediation percentages were calculated for quantifying the strength of the indirect effects. Finally, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to compare the accuracy of BMI and BMI combined with lipid parameters in predicting incident diabetes. Results: Multivariate regression models, adjusted for confounding factors, demonstrated robust associations of lipid parameters, BMI, with diabetes risk, with the exception of TC, LDL-CF, LDL-CS, and non-HDL-C. Mediation analysis showed that lipid parameters except TC, LDL-CF, LDL-CS, and Non-HDL-C were involved in and mediated the association of BMI with diabetes risk, with the largest mediation percentage being the RC/HDL-C ratio, which was as high as 40%; it is worth mentioning that HDL-C and HDL-C-related lipid ratio parameters also play an important mediating role in the association between BMI and diabetes, with the mediator proportion being greater than 30%. Finally, based on the ROC results, we found that the prediction performance of all lipid parameters in the current study except TC was significantly improved when combined with BMI. Conclusion: Our fresh findings suggested that lipid parameters partially mediated the association of BMI with diabetes risk; this result indicated that in the context of diabetes risk screening and disease management, it is important to not only monitor BMI but also pay attention to lipid parameters, particularly HDL-C and HDL-C-related lipid ratio parameters. Background Given the increasing number and the diversity of dietary quality indices used for research, and the differences between settings, there is a need to identify valid indices of dietary quality in different contexts and populations and to identify their associations with health-related outcomes. Objectives The primary objective of this scoping review is to identify the tools used in determining dietary quality among First Nations and to describe the changes in diet. The second objective is to describe the associations identified in studies that have measured the relationship between health and dietary quality among First Nations; and the third objective is to identify factors associated with diet quality. Methods PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Global Health, and Web of Science were searched from inception to June 2021 and updated in February 2022. Articles were included if the research subjects were First Nations, or if articles reported disaggregated subset data for First Nations. Eligible studies focused on nutrition and diet and were published in English or French. Results A total of 151 articles were included in the analysis. Studies used several indicators to measure if individuals adhered to dietary guidelines. Traditional food consumption was frequently used as an indicator of diet quality (n = 96). The consumption of store-bought foods was used as an indicator in 28 studies. Some studies used other diet quality indicators such as the Healthy Eating Index (n = 5) and ultra-processed food "NOVA" classification (n = 6). A trend for decreasing traditional food intake over time was apparent, alongside an increase in store-bought food intake. This trend was accompanied with declining health status, including the increased prevalence of overweight and obesity, diabetes, metabolic diseases, and dental caries. Conclusion This scoping review showed that diet quality among First Nations is improved when traditional foods are consumed. National data showed that the majority of deaths due to COVID-19 are elderly people with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney failure who have a 3.5-fold risk of dying compared to non-elderly people. With an increasing number of elderly and a high prevalence of chronic diseases, home healthcare is important to enable people to be in their own homes rather than hospitals by taking advantage of telemedicine within limited distances. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with 157 elderly respondents of the Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis) at Primary Healthcare Facilities participants in Semarang Regency by a validated questionnaire. Analyzed by SPSS version 21 and a chi-square test. The respondent knowledge level with fewer telemedicine-related categories is about 47.1%. The attitude regarding the development of telemedicine in Prolanis was positive (79.0%), and positively perceived the development of telemedicine by 58.3%. Age (p =.035; OR = 0.502) and gender (p =.010; OR = 2.605) were significantly related to respondents' knowledge. The educational background is significantly related to respondents' attitudes (p =.025; OR = 3.080). This study aimed to examine ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and its association with sleep disorders among the older adults Han and ethnic minority (Bai, Ha Ni, and Dai) population in rural southwest China. A cross-sectional survey of 5,642 was conducted among the rural southwest population aged ≥60 years, consisting of a structured interview and measurement of fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. The overall prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorder was 10.2% and 40.1%, respectively. Bai participants had the highest prevalence of diabetes (15.9%) and obesity (9.9%)(P < 0.01), while Ha Ni participants had the lowest prevalence of diabetes (5.1%) and obesity (3.4%)(P < 0.01). The highest prevalence of sleep disorder (48.4%) was recorded in Bai participants, while Dai participants had the lowest prevalence of sleep disorder (25.6%)(P < 0.01). In all four studied ethnicities, females had a higher prevalence of sleep disorder than males (P < 0.01), and the prevalence of sleep disorder increased with age (P < 0.01). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated older adults with sleep disorder had a risk of developing diabetes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the higher educational level, family history of diabetes, and obesity were the main risk factors for diabetes in participants (P < 0.01). There are stark ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorders in southwest China. This study investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) trajectories in late middle age and incident diabetes in later years. A total of 11,441 participants aged 50–60 years from the Health and Retirement Study with at least 2 self-reported BMI records were included. Individual BMI trajectories representing average BMI changes per year were generated using multilevel modeling. Adjusted risk ratios (ARRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. Associations between BMI trajectories and diabetes risk in participants with different genetic risks were estimated for 5,720 participants of European ancestry. BMI trajectories were significantly associated with diabetes risk in older age (slowly increasing vs. stable: ARR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.54; rapidly increasing vs. stable: ARR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.79). This association was strongest for normal-initial-BMI participants (slowly increasing: ARR = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.88; rapidly increasing: ARR = 2.06, 95% CI: 1.37, 3.11). Participants with a higher genetic liability to diabetes and a rapidly increasing BMI trajectory had the highest risk for diabetes (ARR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.67, 2.76). These findings confirmed that BMI is the leading risk factor for diabetes and that although the normal BMI group has the lowest incidence rate for diabetes, people with normal BMI are most sensitive to changes in BMI. Non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension are highly prevalent and make a substantive contribution to the global burden of morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed countries. Because lifestyle behaviors have been shown to be effective in preventing and treating several types of diseases that can ultimately lead to a high prevalence of morbidity and mortality, several widely accepted treatment guidelines for specific diseases include lifestyle modification strategies. We aim to identify the suspected cases of Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension & the risk factors among screened participants. We found 18% of them were found to be suspected as diabetics and 5% of them were suspected to be hypertension. We observed statistically significant association with risk factors between both the known cases and suspected cases of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Majhool date (Phoenix dactylifera), renowned for its premium taste and texture, is extensively consumed in the Islamic world, particularly during Ramadan. Despite its popularity, concerns persist regarding its potential to induce diabetes in non-patients. This study aims to explore the diabetogenic effects of prolonged Majhool date (Phoenix dactylifera) consumption, the widely used fruit in the Islamic world, through animal experiments and human clinical data. Medjool dates were processed into an ethanolic extract for the animal experiment. Then, 21 Balb/c mice received varying doses of the extract for one month. The fasting blood glucose levels were analyzed at the beginning and after one month of consumption of the Majhool date extract. For the clinical study, 387 healthy participants were recruited, with fasting blood glucose levels assessed before and after Ramadan, a period of heightened Majhool date consumption. all groups of the experimental animals exhibited a significant (p<0.05) weight increase after Majhool date consumption, while no significant (p>0.05) alteration in fasting blood glucose levels among groups. In addition, it was found that fasting blood glucose levels remained statistically unchanged (p>0.05) after heightened Majhool date consumption among humans. The study challenges the belief that Majhool date induces diabetes, supported by both animal and human data. Findings suggest that Majhool date consumption, even at higher doses, does not induce diabetes. Context Prematurity increases the long-term risks for endocrine and metabolic morbidity of offspring, but there is uncertainty regarding the risks for early-term deliveries (370/7-386/7 weeks of gestation). Objective We aim to evaluate whether early-term deliveries increase the long-term risk for type 1 diabetes and obesity of offspring up to the age of 18 years compared with full-term children. PubMed, Medline, and EMBASE were searched. Observational cohort studies addressing the association between early-term delivery and long-term risk for type 1 diabetes and obesity, were included. Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed risk of bias. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and heterogeneity were determined. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plots with Egger's regression line and contours, and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results Eleven studies were included following a screen of 7500 abstracts. All studies were scored as high quality according to the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Early-term delivery was significantly associated with an increased risk for type 1 diabetes (RR 1.19, 1.13-1.25), while the association was weaker for overweight and obesity (RR 1.05, 0.97-1.12). It is challenging to determine whether the association between early-term births and long-term morbidity represents a cause and effect relationship or is attributable to confounders. Most of the included studies adjusted for at least some possible confounders. Conclusion Compared with full-term offspring, early-term delivery poses a modest risk for long-term pediatric type 1 diabetes. Context. Insulin sensitivity and secretion indices can be useful tools in understanding insulin homeostasis in children at risk for diabetes. There have been few studies examining the reproducibility of these measures in pediatrics. Objective. To determine whether fasting or oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)-derived insulin measures would be more reproducible and whether there would be differences based on weight, sex, race, and pubertal status. Design. Observational study. Setting. Clinical research unit. Patients or Other Participants. Two hundred fifty-seven overweight/obese (BMI ≥ 85th%, n = 186) and normal weight (BMI < 85th%, n = 71) children without diabetes between ages of 8 and 17 were included in the study. Methods. OGTT tests performed in study participants at two separate visits within a 3-week period. We performed two formal oral glucose tolerance tests within a 3-week period. The reproducibility of fasting measures was compared with OGTT-derived measures by weight categories and compared by weight, sex, race, and pubertal status. Comparisons were made between the correlation coefficients of fasting vs. OGTT-derived measures and between normal weight vs. obese/overweight participants, male vs. female, White vs. Black, and pre- vs. post-midpubertal. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated for each comparison as well. Results. For insulin sensitivity, the OGTT-derived measure was more reproducible than the fasting measures. There were no significant differences in reproducibility in the overweight/obese population compared to the normal weight population nor by sex, race, or pubertal status. Conclusions. Nonfasting insulin sensitivity measures are more reproducible than fasting insulin sensitivity measures, regardless of weight category. Insulin secretion measures have poor reproducibility overall. Background: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dietary patterns are supposed to be important and controllable factors in developing metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of dietary patterns with metabolic syndrome and its components. Subjects/Methods: Cross-sectional data were extracted from the Bandare-Kong cohort study conducted on 4063 people aged 35 to 70. Dietary patterns were extracted using principal component analysis based on thirty-eight pre-defined food groups. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and its components with quintiles of dietary patterns in crude and adjusted models. Results: Three major dietary patterns were identified (healthy, western, and traditional) in the final analysis of 2823 eligible individuals. After adjusting for covariates, the odds of metabolic syndrome were significantly decreased by 46% in subjects with the highest adherence to the healthy dietary pattern compared to those with the lowest adherence quintile. Results from fully adjusted models on individual metabolic syndrome components showed an inverse association between higher adherence to the healthy dietary pattern and the odds of increased blood glucose, high waist circumference, and elevated blood pressure. However, in fully adjusted models, no significant association was observed between the western and traditional dietary patterns with odds of metabolic syndrome and its components. Conclusions: Adherence to a healthy dietary pattern containing high amounts of fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and legumes, could be recommended to prevent and control metabolic syndrome. Diabetes is one of the fastest spreading diseases in the 21st century. The aim of the study is twofold: (1) to find differences in personality traits, self-esteem, body-esteem, and imagery between healthy women and women with diabetes; (2) to verify whether there are differences in the analyzed factors among women with diabetes who engage in sports compared to those who do not. We used 3 questionnaires: Imagination in Sport—short form, Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and BFIS Personality, which were tested online. We found that women with diabetes were characterized by significantly higher neuroticism, lower extraversion, and higher conscientiousness (marginally significant). We also found that women with diabetes who practice sport rated their bodies more highly in terms of sexual attractiveness and made better use of imagined affirmations than women without diabetes who were not active. Introduction/Objectives: A non-laboratory-based pre-diabetes/diabetes mellitus (pre-DM/DM) risk prediction model developed from the Hong Kong Chinese population showed good external discrimination in a primary care (PC) population, but the estimated risk level was significantly lower than the observed incidence, indicating poor calibration. This study explored whether recalibrating/updating methods could improve the model's accuracy in estimating individuals' risks in PC. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis on the model's predictors and blood test results of 919 Chinese adults with no prior DM diagnosis recruited from PC clinics from April 2021 to January 2022 in HK. The dataset was randomly split in half into a training set and a test set. The model was recalibrated/updated based on a seven-step methodology, including model recalibrating, revising and extending methods. The primary outcome was the calibration of the recalibrated/updated models, indicated by calibration plots. The models' discrimination, indicated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC-ROC), was also evaluated. Results: Recalibrating the model's regression constant, with no change to the predictors' coefficients, improved the model's accuracy (calibration plot intercept: −0.01, slope: 0.69). More extensive methods could not improve any further. All recalibrated/updated models had similar AUC-ROCs to the original model. Conclusion: The simple recalibration method can adapt the HK Chinese pre-DM/DM model to PC populations with different pre-test probabilities. The recalibrated model can be used as a first-step screening tool and as a measure to monitor changes in pre-DM/DM risks over time or after interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) is a valid instrument to assess the diet quality of the Chinese population, but evidence regarding the relationship between CHEI and the risk of diabetes remains limited. We aimed to investigate the prospective association of CHEI with diabetes among Chinese adults. Methods: 1563 adults free of diabetes at baseline and with at least two survey data from 1997 to 2018 were included. Dietary information was collected by three consecutive 24-h recalls combined with household food inventory, and long-term diet quality was evaluated by the CHEI. Diabetes was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed diabetes and/or fasting blood glucose ≥ 7.0 mmol/L, and/or HbA1c ≥ 6.5%. Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline analysis were used to estimate the associations between CHEI and diabetes. Results: During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 192 (10.3%) participants developed new-onset diabetes. Generally, a five-point higher CHEI score was significantly associated with a 17% lower risk of diabetes (HR, 0.83; 95%CI 0.71–0.97). In stratified analysis, inverse associations between CHEI and diabetes were more vigorous in females (HR, 0.68; 95%CI 0.54–0.85) than in males (P for interaction = 0.01). In addition, there was an L-shaped association between CHEI and diabetes risk in the whole population (P for non-linearity = 0.026), while no significant non-linear association was observed in females or males, respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggested that a long-term higher-quality diet evaluated by CHEI was significantly associated with lower risks of diabetes, and the favorable associations were more pronounced among females. Summary: Objective: Rising prevalence of obesity has led to increased rates of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus (DM) in children. This study compares rates of prediabetes and diabetes using two recommended screening tests (fasting plasma glucose [FPG] and haemoglobin A1c [HbA1c]). Study Design: Data were collected prospectively from 37 multi‐component paediatric weight management programs in POWER (Paediatric Obesity Weight Evaluation Registry). Results: For this study, 3962 children with obesity without a known diagnosis of DM at presentation and for whom concurrent measurement of FPG and HbA1c were available were evaluated (median age 12.0 years [interquartile range, IQR 9.8, 14.6]; 48% males; median body mass index 95th percentile [%BMIp95] 134% [IQR 120, 151]). Notably, 10.7% had prediabetes based on FPG criteria (100–125 mg/dL), 18.6% had prediabetes based on HbA1c criteria (5.7%–6.4%), 0.9% had DM by FPG abnormality (≥126 mg/dL) and 1.1% had DM by HbA1c abnormality (≥6.5%). Discordance between the tests was observed for youth in both age groups (10–18 years [n = 2915] and age 2–9 years [n = 1047]). Conclusion: There is discordance between FPG and HbA1c for the diagnosis of prediabetes and DM in youth with obesity.
