Background: The introduction of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in various branches of the dental field such as endodontics, implantology, periodontology, and restorative dentistry and oral medicine has become useful in recent decades. This systematic review presents an overview of the literature to evaluate the usefulness of topical PDT for the treatment of benign oral soft tissue lesions and to identify limitations in prior studies to improve PDT applications. Methods: We performed a review of the literature using different search engines (PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) employing MeSH terms such as "Photodynamic therapy" and "PDT" in conjunction with other terms. We utilized the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Study design (PICOS) method to define our study eligibility criteria. Results: Initial results were 1513. Finally, there were only 21 studies that met our selection criteria. We divided the 21 selected items into two groups: inflammatory diseases and infective diseases. Conclusions: Although topical PDT is an easy to perform and well-tolerated treatment and appears to be a valid method with promising results in the treatment of benign lesions of the oral cavity's soft tissues, further studies are needed to complete the current knowledge of this technique.

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) role in oral potentially malignant lesions remains unclear. Aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection in a cohort of patients affected by oral lichen planus, to analyze the genotypes involved, and to compare the performance of two specimen collection methods: brushing and biopsy. Methods: Consecutive patients with oral lichen planus were enrolled. Each patient's clinical and anamnestic data were recorded before he/she underwent brushing and biopsy procedures. The collected samples were analyzed using RT-PCR. Prevalence of HPV infection was evaluated considering cytobrush and biopsy outcomes alone and combined. Correlation between HPV presence and sex, age, smoke, alcohol, kind of lichen planus, Hepatitis C virus, and involved mucosae was analyzed using chi-square test (significance at P <.05). Cohen's k coefficient was employed to compare brushing and biopsy. Results: Fifty-two patients affected by oral lichen planus were enrolled. Total HPV prevalence was 17%, when considering only the biopsy and the cytobrush the prevalence was 15% and 6%, respectively. None of the considered variables showed significant correlation with HPV (P >.05). The concordance between the two methods was “fair” (k =.305). Conclusions: The biopsy appears more reliable than cytobrush to detect HPV in course of oral lichen planus. No statistical correlation emerged with the analyzed variables. The most frequently detected genotypes were HPV 6 and 11, while only two cases presented with HPV 16 and 53, known as human oncogenic.

Background: YouTubeTM is one of the most used platforms for patients looking for health-related information. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the available information about oral lichen planus on YouTubeTM and how users interact with it. Methods: A YouTubeTM search for oral lichen planus was performed, setting English UK (language) and United Kingdom (country). Two hundred and fifteen results were screened, and 36 videos met the inclusion criteria. Videos' quality was evaluated using the DISCERN and the Global Quality Scale tools, and by categorizing them through quality assessment, source, duration, views, likes, and dislikes of each video were noted. Results: According to quality assessments, 55.6% of the videos were classified as useful, while the 35.1% were classified as misleading/dangerous. The DISCERN and GQS values were generally low (31.56 ± 10.38 and 2.33 ± 1.07, respectively); DISCERN and GQS were positively correlated with the video length and negatively correlate with the data of upload (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study corroborates the results of others that a great number of health-related videos available on YouTubeTM feature misleading or potentially dangerous information; although the quality seems to slightly improve over time, medical associations and researchers ought to plan strategies aimed at improving the quality of the information delivered through YouTubeTM and other social media.

(1) Background: Glycogen storage disease (GSD) represents a group of twenty-three types of metabolic disorders which damage the capacity of body to store glucose classified basing on the enzyme deficiency involved. Affected patients could present some oro-facial alterations: the purpose of this review is to catalog and characterize oral manifestations in these patients. (2) Methods: a systematic review of the literature among different search engines using PICOS criteria has been performed. The studies were included with the following criteria: tissues and anatomical structures of the oral cavity in humans, published in English, and available full text. Review articles and paper published before 1990 were excluded. (3) Results: 757 articles were identified in the initial search. In the end, 45 articles that met the selection criteria has been analyzed. The information extracted from the articles was classified according to the type of GSD (Ia; Ib; II; III; V; XIV). Oral manifestations range from dental caries to severe periodontitis in paediatric patients, from diffuses and recurrent oral ulcers in the cleft lip and palate. (4) Conclusions: Although considered a rare disease, GSD can present a varied number of oral manifestations. Therefore, it is of great importance for the oral medicine specialist to know and classify them.

Enamel defects (EDs) are qualitative and/or quantitative disturbances of the dental surface. To date, the responsiveness to remineralizing treatments has been studied ex vivo, on dental sections from extracted teeth. The present research aims to establish if in vivo reflectance confocal laser scanning microscopy is able to visualize the changes in the enamel architecture on living teeth, before, during and after remineralizing treatments by casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). As proof-of-concept study, 17 consecutive children affected by EDs were enrolled and 38 EDs were considered. A CPP-ACP mousse was applied twice a week for 6 weeks and clinical and microscopic images were collected before, during and after the treatment for evaluating the changes occurred. For in vivo microscopic imaging, a reflectance confocal laser scanning microscope (RCM) for in vivo use was adopted. In this study RCM was proven to be able to visualize in vivo and at microscopic resolution the changes occurred during the remineralizing processes without needing for dental extractions and histopathological procedures. This in vivo RCM capability could encourage its clinical application in monitoring responsiveness to enamel therapies.

Objectives: This review aimed to evaluate the correlation between viral infections (HPV, EBV, HSV-1, CMV) other than HCV and oral lichen planus to assess if there is sufficient evidence to establish if these viruses can play a role in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Materials and methods: We reviewed the literature using different search engines (PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library), employing MeSH terms such as “oral lichen planus” and “OLP” in conjunction with other terms. We utilized the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Study design (PICOS) method to define our study eligibility criteria. Results: A total of 43 articles of the 1219 results initially screened were included in the study. We allocated the 43 selected items into four groups, according to each related virus: HPV, EBV, HSV-1, and CMV. Conclusions: Heterogeneous results neither confirm nor exclude a direct correlation between the investigated viral infections and oral lichen planus etiopathogenesis and its feasible malignant transformation. Many viral agents can cause oral lesions and act as cancerizing agents. Future studies could be desirable to produce comparable statistical analyses and enhance the quantity and quality of the outcomes to promote the translation of research into clinical practice.

Pseudolesions are defined as physiological or paraphysiological changes of the oral normal anatomy that can easily be misdiagnosed for pathological conditions such as potentially malignant lesions, infective and immune diseases, or neoplasms. Pseudolesions do not require treatment and a surgical or pharmacological approach can constitute an overtreatment indeed. This review aims to describe the most common pseudolesions of oral soft tissues, their possible differential diagnosis and eventual related systemic diseases or syndromes. The pseudolesions frequently observed in clinical practice and reported in literature include Fordyce granules, leukoedema, geographic tongue, fissured tongue, sublingual varices, lingual fimbriae, vallate papillae, white and black hairy tongue, Steno's duct hypertrophy, lingual tonsil, white sponge nevus, racial gingival pigmentation, lingual thyroid, and eruptive cyst. They could be misdiagnosed as oral potential malignant disorders, candidiasis, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)-related affections, oral autoimmune diseases, or benign and malignant tumors. In some cases, pseudolesions feature in a syndromic panel, for example, fissured tongue in Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome. It is strictly fundamental for dentists to know and to distinguish oral pseudolesions from pathological conditions, in order to avoid overtreatment

Introduction: In the different branches of dentistry, the use of laser to solve different clinical situations is increasing due to numerous advantages that have been studied in literature since the 70s. Leucoplakia and hyperkeratosis can benefit from laser-assisted treatment. In most cases biopsy sampling, histological examination and, if no malignant cells are present, the follow-up is needed. However, even if the lesion is free of dysplasia patients often ask to eliminate these white spots that are always a cause of concern. Aim: From these numerous requests comes the idea of setting up a laser-assisted protocol as less invasive as possible to be offered to patients. The aim of the study is to find a laser-assisted protocol for the surgical excision of leucoplakia and hyperkeratosis that can both improve the clinical aspect of the lesion and be sustainable for patients. The null hypothesis has been identified in the following statement: the treatment is effective and efficient at the same time; where effectiveness was tested with the following criteria: size of the lesion, tactile perception, discomfort, pain; and efficiency with the following criteria: pain and discomfort perceived during the treatment. Materials and methods: To collect all data, a specially designed medical record was used. The diode laser was used with a pulsed mode and the maximum power corresponds to 1.8 W. No anaesthesia was used. Before laser-assisted treatment, the fibre was activated and was used with a contact overflowing. Results: Our results show a decrease in the size of the lesion statistically significant. No pain was referred during treatment, except for a slight burning sensation. Conclusion: In conclusion we can state that the treatment is both efficient and effective

Nowadays, there is a considerable interest to study the biological and microbiological changes that accompany orthodontic treatment. Growing knowledge on oral microbiota allows, day after day, to identify and characterize the microbial arrangements specifically associated with oral and extra-oral conditions. The aim of the present work is to highlight any further correlations between orthodontic appliances and the qualitative and quantitative modifications of the oral microbiota, such as predisposing factors for the onset of caries, periodontal diseases, and other infections, which can impact the oral and systemic health of the orthodontic patients. When compared with subjects without orthodontic appliances, orthodontic patients reported significant qualitative and quantitative differences in supra-and subgingival plaque during the entire treatment period. Certain components of fixed appliances (mainly bonded molar brackets, ceramic brackets, and elastomeric ligatures) showed high risks of periodontal disease and tooth decay for patients. An unclear prevalence of Candida spp. and the paucity of studies on viruses and protozoas in the oral microbiota of orthodontic patients need to be further investigated. The evidence emerging from this study could guide clinicians in modulating the timing of controls and enhance patient motivation to prevent the formation of mature plaque, thus reducing the risks of oral-plaque-related diseases.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent form of cancer of lips and oral cavity, and its diagnostic delay, caused by misdiagnosis at the early stages, is responsible for high mortality ratios. Biopsy and histopathological assessment are the gold standards for OSCC diagnosis, but they are time-consuming, invasive, and do not always enable the patient’s compliance, mainly in cases of follow-up with the need for more biopsies. The use of adjunctive noninvasive imaging techniques improves the diagnostic approach, making it faster and better accepted by patients. The present review aims to focus on the most consolidated diagnostic techniques, such as vital staining and tissue autofluorescence, and to report the potential role of some of the most promising innovative techniques, such as narrow-band imaging, high-frequency ultrasounds, optical coherence tomography, and in vivo confocal microscopy. According to their contribution to OSCC diagnosis, an ideal three-step diagnostic procedure is proposed, to make the diagnostic path faster, better, and more accurate.

Background: Gingival hyperplasia could occur after the administration of cyclosporine A. Up to 90% of the patients submitted to immunosuppressant drugs have been reported to suffer from this side effect. The role of fibroblasts in gingival hyperplasia has been widely discussed by literature, showing contrasting results. In order to demonstrate the effect of cyclosporine A on the extracellular matrix component of fibroblasts, we investigated the gene expression profile of human fibroblasts after cyclosporine A administration. Materials and methods: Primary gingival fibroblasts were stimulated with 1000 ng/mL cyclosporine A solution for 16 h. Gene expression levels of 57 genes belonging to the “Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Molecules” pathway were analyzed using real-time PCR in treated cells, compared to untreated cells used as control. Results: Expression levels of different genes were significantly de-regulated. The gene CDH1, which codes for the cell adhesion protein E-cadherin, showed up-regulation. Almost all the extracellular matrix metalloproteases showed down-regulation (MMP8, MMP11, MMP15, MMP16, MMP24, MMP26). The administration of cyclosporine A was followed by down-regulation of other genes: COL7A1, the transmembrane receptors ITGB2 and ITGB4, and the basement membrane constituents LAMA2 and LAMB1. Conclusion: Data collected demonstrate that cyclosporine inhibits the secretion of matrix proteases, contributing to the accumulation of extracellular matrix components in the gingival connective tissue, causing gingival overgrowth. Patients affected by gingival overgrowth caused by cyclosporine A need to be further investigated in order to determine the role of this drug on fibroblasts.

Background: The number of pediatric patients affected by HIV still remains high, mainly in developing countries, where the main cause of infection is vertical transmission from the mother. Even today, a large number of these children do not have access to treatment, and, without proper care, they die in the first few years of life. Objective: The aim of our review was to assess the prevalence of oral hard and soft tissue lesions in HIV-positive pediatric patients by identifying the most common manifestations and the overall impact that they may have on the children’s quality of life. Study design: A systematic review of the articles in the English language in PubMed and Scopus was conducted in March 2019 in order to identify the main epidemiological and cross-sectional studies on the topic. Results: Oral diseases are still one of the most common manifestations in HIV-positive pediatric patients, and they often represent the first form in which immunosuppression shows itself. An analysis of the literature shows that candidiasis is the most common oral lesion found in HIV-positive children. A significant incidence of gingivitis and gingival disease is also evident, though not strictly correlated to HIV infection. However, thanks to the introduction of new antiretroviral therapies, the incidence of HIV-related oral lesions is decreasing. Conclusions: An HIV-positive children care program should also include dental protocols, as oral disease negatively influences the quality of life, affecting both functional and social aspects.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for more than 90% of oral epithelial malignancies and often arises from precursor lesions, whose diagnosis is based on biopsy and histopathology. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) images the vital tissues at microscopic resolution, well correlating with conventional histopathology, but it is poorly investigated in oral oncology. The present work aims to describe RCM cytoarchitectural findings in oral mucosae affected by OSCC and its precursors. Materials and Methods: A series of clinically suspected oral lesions underwent RCM imaging before conventional biopsy and histopathological assessment in order to identify features suggestive of tumoral changes. Sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) of RCM compared to histopathology were calculated. Results: Totally, 30 sites in 20 patients were considered and clinically classified into 16 “leukoplakia”/“ traumatism”, nine erosive-ulcerative lesions, three verrucous lesions, and two healthy mucosae, as control. The histopathological “positivity,” due to the presence of various degrees of dysplasia and/or neoplasia, was found in 11 lesions; the RCM “positivity” was referred to nine lesions reporting the RCM detection of polymorphism, multinucleated cells, irregular cellular maturation, altered nuclear/cytoplasm ratio, and abnormal blood vessels. After excluding three verrucous lesions from the RCM analysis, due to the low laser penetration through the hyperkeratotic layers, the results well correlated with histopathology, reporting 1.000 (SE), 0.933 (SP), 0.909 (PPV), and 1.000 (NPV). Conclusion: RCM can reveal dysplastic/neoplastic signs occurring in oral lesions, thus supporting their diagnostic pathway.

Gingival overgrowth is a serious side effect that accompanies the use of amlodipine. Several conflicting theories have been proposed to explain the fibroblast's function in gingival overgrowth. To determine whether amlodipine alters the fibrotic response, we investigated its effects on treated gingival fibroblast gene expression as compared with untreated cells.

OBJECTIVES: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique based on optical imaging with a micrometre resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential role of OCT in evaluating oral mucosa bullous diseases. METHODS: two patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) and one patient with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) were examined and images of their oral lesions were performed using OCT. RESULTS: In OCT images, the BP blister has a clearly different morphology from the PV one compared to the blistering level. CONCLUSION: This exploratory study suggests that the OCT is able to distinguish epithelial and subepithelial layer in vivo images of healthy oral mucosa from those with bullous diseases, assisting the clinicians in differential diagnosis.The presented data are in accordance with the scientific literature, although a wider pool of cases is needed to increase statistical power. Histological examination and immunofluorescence methods remain the gold standard for the diagnosis of oral bullous diseases. In this context, the OCT can provide the clinician with a valuable aid both as an additional diagnostic tool and in the follow up of the disease.

The aim of this study is to evaluate in vivo the effects of in-office tooth whitening hydrogen peroxide (HP) agent on enamel-microstructured surface by a reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM). Ten healthy volunteers assisted at the Dental School presenting teeth with vital pulp were selected. The 35% HP whiteness product was applied in two visits on discolored teeth, 1-week interval between, via 20-min applications. A commercially available hand-held RCM (Vivascope3000®, Lucid, Rochester, NY, USA) was used to image in vivo the dental surface of the selected tooth of each volunteer. Twenty upper central incisors' vestibular surfaces were imaged, before bleaching (T0), immediately after (T1) and 1 week later (T2). The peculiar structure of the enamel was seen at T0. After bleaching, white reflective circular bodies were found all over the teeth surfaces, which disappear 1 week later (T2). When the HP gel® was imaged, the same white circular areas were observed. Going deeper, the regular enamel architecture was preserved. Textural analysis of the images in T0 and T2 was performed: GLCM parameters were extracted. Mann-Whitney U test was performed to evaluate statistical differences between two groups of data (p > 0.05). Finally, 35 prisms were randomly selected from T0 and T2 image and diameters were measured; a paired t test was performed (p = 0.381). The RCM is a promisor tool for investigating the features of enamel in vivo, immediately after bleaching procedures, as well as longitudinally.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive approach that has shown promising results in management of oral, head and neck lesions. PDT can be used alone or in combination with other conventional treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy). Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a mucosal and cutaneous chronic disease characterized by an autoimmune insult of basal keratinocytes. We aim to evaluate the feasibility of topical toluidine blue-mediated PDT for the treatment of oral cavity multifocal homogeneous white lesions by oral lichen planus without dysplastic features.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) compared to a control group. 11 patients (mean age 65.2 years-old), with diagnosis of OLP and 13 controls (mean age 64.8 years-old) underwent a psychiatric evaluation with five psychometric scales: Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI 1-2), Distress Thermometer (DT) and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). Seventy-three % of OLP group presented a VAS score of mild type; 9% had depressive symptoms; 100% of the sample had a score above the cut-off for state and trait anxiety; 45% presented Distress (36% moderate type). However, no statistical difference was found in comparison with the control group. In this study, there was no difference in these parameters between the OLP group and the control group. Perhaps, a larger cohort of patients could give different results.

To compare the results of psychometric tests in patients with BMS and controls, participants were tested for depression, anxiety, fatigue and distress. Patients with BMS had noticeably higher scores for depression, fatigue and distress, compared to controls. Depression and distress were significantly correlated with the burning symptom. Moreover, distress and burning symptoms proved to be interdependent. Depression seems to play a specific role in BMS. Burning symptoms affect quality of life of patients and they could be a predictor of distress.

Candida albicans is a typical commensal microorganism of the oral cavity that can become virulent in certain conditions and cause denture stomatitis (DS). Many conditions can predispose for DS, including local and systemic alterations. The therapeutical approach to DS is various and both topical and systemic alternatives can be considered. Azoles molecules are the most common used, both topically and systemically, but in recent years various alternatives have been proposed. This review aims to examine the scientific literature to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional therapies and the potential of the new ones.

Oral mucosa is constantly under the influence of various internal and external stimuli, therefore it is interested by a range of developmental disorders, irritation, inflammation, and neoplastic conditions. Traumatic fibroma is one of these lesions. The aim of this work is to obtain an ultrasound characterization of a lip fibroma with a high frequency probe (8-18 MHz) as feasibility and experimental model of this non-invasive technique in the oral mucosa compared with its histo-pathological section. Ultrasound characterization of a fibroma in a 50-year-old patient in the right retro commissural area of mucosa was performed. The ultrasound images were compared with its histological image. Fibroma is a traumatic lesion clinically recognizable and with a complex and well-defined histopathology structure. Although further investigations are necessary to determine the potential of ultrasonographic images as an aid in the diagnosis of oral lesions, this case report might be a model for ultrasound imaging compared with its histological section

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterised by the presence of a burning sensation in the oral mucosa in the absence of any clinically apparent mucosal sign. It occurs more commonly in older women and often affects the tongue tip and lateral borders, lips, and hard and soft palates. Besides the burning sensation, patients with BMS may complain of unremitting oral mucosal pain, dysgeusia, and xerostomia. The exact pathophysiology of primary BMS remains unknown. A major challenge for the clinician is the treatment of BMS: identifying possible causative factors is the first step, but BMS is often idiopathic. Drug therapy, in addition to behavioural therapy and psychotherapy, may help to eliminate the symptoms. Considering the growing incidence of BMS in older people, further research is required to determine the true efficacy of current management strategies for patients with this disorder.

Recurrent aphtous stomatitis (aphthae, canker sores) is ones of the most common and painful oral mucosal inflammatory ulcerative conditions; etiopathogenesis is uncertain and only symptomatic therapy is available. We used a dessicating agent based on a concentrated mixture of sulfates. The rationale for use of this product on canker sores is that it cauterises the epithelial tissue affected by the immune response. The aim of this study was to evaluate the topical application of this dessicating agent on aphtous ulcers, and verify its efficacy in reducing pain. Fifty-seven patients, with oral minor aphtous lesions and a history of recurrent aphtous stomatitis were enrolled into this study and were assigned into two groups: 30 patients were treated with a single topical application of a dessicating agent and 27 without any treatment. A subjective evaluation of symptoms was completed by each patient using a visual analog scale (VAS) of 0-10. Patients' oral lesions were clinically observed at days 0 (before entering the study) and at day 6. We found that from day three the mean differences in pain score between the two groups was about 16.33% with a decrease of symptoms of 49.57% compared with pretreatment VAS score at baseline (P<0.001). Unfortunately, if we compare the mean differences from baseline in the range of 6 days of pretreatment until day 6 in the group treated with the dessicating agent and in the one receiving no treatment, performing an unpaired t-test, no significant differences appeared (P>0.05). These data suggest that a single application of this medicament could become a valid support in the management of recurrent aphtous stomatitis.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease that manifests as intraepithelial blisters in skin and mucous membranes. We report the case of a 62-year-old female patient with clinical picture of desquamative gingivitis and a histological and serological diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris. The aim of this study is to analyse bollous oral diseases in order to evaluate the feasibility to image epithelial architecture of oral mucosae using in vivo optical coherence tomography. Optical coherence tomography seems to be a valid non-invasive auxiliary diagnostic device able to show in vivo the epithelial layers and basal membrane.

The enamel defects (EDs) may present with a variety of clinical manifestations with increasing severity from the sole appearance of pale discoloration to remarkable structural alterations. EDs are responsible for higher caries receptivity. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) allows to image in vivo at microscopic resolution of the dental surface, thus avoiding the tooth extraction and the sample preparation because of its ability to optically scan living tissues along their depth. Aim of this study is the in vivo assessment at microscopic resolution of dental surfaces affected by EDs without resorting to invasive methods such as teeth extractions, to define histological findings occurring in chromatic and/or structural EDs. For the purpose, 15 children, referring at the Dental Clinic of the Second University of Naples, affected by several degrees of EDs, were enrolled and underwent in vivo RCM imaging to microscopically define the ED confocal features using a commercially available hand-held reflectance confocal microscope with neither injuries nor discomfort. Totally, 29 teeth were imaged. Results demonstrated images good in quality and the capability to detect EDs such as unevenness, grooves, and lack of mineralization according to their clinical degree of disarray. The present in vivo microscopic study on EDs allowed to highlight structural changes in dental enamel at microscopic resolution in real-time and in a non-invasive way, with no need for extraction or processing the samples. Further experiments could define the responsiveness to remineralizing procedures as therapeutic treatments.

The popularity of one-piece implants has increased considerably among patients and dentists. The advantages of one-piece immediate loading are to reduce the number of interventions. These parameters can be better controlled with a one-piece implant.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of palifermin, an N-terminal truncated version of endogenous keratinocyte growth factor, in the control of oral mucositis during antiblastic therapy. Twenty patients undergoing allogeneic stem-cell transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were treated with palifermin, and compared to a control group with the same number of subjects and similar inclusion criteria. Statistical analysis were performed to compare the outcomes in the treatment vs. control groups. In the treatment group, we found a statistically significant reduction in the duration of parenteral nutrition (P=0.002), duration of mucositis (P=0.003) and the average grade of mucositis (P=0.03). The statistical analysis showed that the drug was able to decrease the severity of mucositis.
