Abstract

The existing literature survey reports rare and conflicting studies on the effect of the preparation method of metal-based semiconductor photocatalysts on structural/morphological features, electronic properties, and kinetics regulating the photocatalytic H-2 generation reaction. In this investigation, we compare the different copper/titania-based photocatalysts for H-2 generation synthesized via distinct methods (i.e., photodeposition and impregnation). Our study aims to establish a stringent correlation between physicochemical/electronic properties and photocatalytic performances for H-2 generation based on material characterization and kinetic modeling of the experimental outcomes. Estimating unknown kinetic parameters, such as charge recombination rate and quantum yield, suggests a mechanism regulating charge carrier lifetime depending on copper distribution on the TiO2 surface. We demonstrate that H-2 generation photoefficiency recorded over impregnated CuxOy/TiO2 is related to an even distribution of Cu(0)/Cu(I) on TiO2, and the formation of an Ohmic junction concertedly extended charge carrier lifetime and separation. The outcomes of the kinetic analysis and the related modeling investigation underpin photocatalyst physicochemical and electronic properties. Overall, the present study lays the groundwork for the future design of metal-based semiconductor photocatalysts with high photoefficiencies for H-2 evolution.

Abstract

Several studies have shown that combining TiO2 and Cu2O enhances the photocatalytic activity of the material by generating a heterojunction capable of extending the light absorption in the visible and reducing the electron-hole recombination rate. Ball milling has been chosen as an alternative methodology for photocatalyst preparation, among the several techniques documented in the literature review. The results of a previously reported investigation enabled the identification of the most effective photocatalyst that can be prepared for hydrogen generation by combining Cu2O and TiO2 (i.e., 1%wt. Cu2O in TiO2 photocatalyst prepared by ball-milling method at 200 rpm and 1 min milling time). To optimize photocatalytic hydrogen generation in the presence of the greatest photocatalyst, the effects of (i) sacrificial species and their concentration, (ii) temperature, and (iii) pH of the system are taken into account, resulting in a light-to-chemical energy efficiency of 8% under the best-tested conditions. Last but not least, the possibility of using the present photocatalytic system under direct solar light irradiation is evaluated: the results indicate that nearly 60% of the hydrogen production recorded under sunlight can be attributed to the visible component of the solar spectrum, while the remaining 40% can be attributed to the UV component. Abstract

Ortho- and meta-nitrobenzaldehydes are two important intermediates in the chemical industry. They are the main products of benzaldehyde nitration by mixed acid, which is a hazardous chemical process since reaction rates are very sensitive to variations of the operating conditions. In the present investigation, a previously developed kinetic model under homogeneous conditions is validated and extended for heterogeneous liquid-liquid systems. A comparison between performances of a lab-scale batch reactor and a commercial microreactor is also presented. The results show that microreactors with embedded static mixer can outperform scaled-up batch reactors, achieving the theoretical limit of conversion/yield attainable under kinetic control.

Abstract

5-Hydroxy-4-keto-2-pentenoic acid (HKPA) is characterized by the presence in its chemical structure of four different chemical groups (hydroxyl, keto, carboxylic and unsaturated groups) that render it a possible intermediate or monomer in the chemical industry. The production of this compound is studied by the sensitized photo-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in aqueous solution at acidic pH. 5-HMF can be easily obtained through the degradation of saccharides such as fructose or inulin. The system reactivity is influenced by the concentration of methylene blue (BM) which is used as the photosensitizer and the oxygen dissolved in the solution. Only moderate consumptions of the sensitizer are recorded during the oxidation experiments thus suggesting the possibility to recover and reuse it in new runs. No differences in the reactivity of the system and/or selectivity for HKPA are observed as a result of changes in the starting concentration of the substrate and/or pH. A simplified reaction scheme of photo-oxidation of 5-HMF is proposed. Two kinetic models are developed according to this scheme to simulate the photo-oxidation processes of the substrate in the absence and in the presence of methylene blue. A validation of these models is carried out by means of the experimental data, collected at pH = 6.0, at different initial concentrations of 5-HMF and BM. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

48. From waste to resource: hydrogen generation and antimicrobial activity of Ag-based photocatalysts recovered from biomedical waste

Abstract

Electrocardiogram (ECG) disposable electrodes contain a substantial amount of silver (Ag), which can be extracted and recycled. Most current methods for recovering Ag from waste are expensive and environmentally harmful. This study investigated a sustainable chemical process for extracting Ag from discarded medical electrodes using a simple Cu(II) solution under moderately acidic conditions. Using response surface methodology (RSM) based on a three-level, full-factorial design, the optimized extraction conditions were determined as pH = 4.78, T = 80°C, [Cu(II)]₀ = 8.0 × 10⁻³ M, and [NaCl]₀ = 3.72M. Under these conditions, a process efficiency approaching 100% was achieved. Moreover, the recovery of metallic silver exceeded 85%, even when using real matrices. (i.e., discarded ECG electrodes). As a result, the Ag-containing leachate solutions were utilized to synthesize silver-based materials with varying Ag content. These materials demonstrated (i) excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production in aqueous solutions containing organic compounds and (ii) significant antipathogenic properties. In summary, effective Ag/TiO₂ photocatalytic materials with high efficiency for hydrogen production and antimicrobial activity were successfully prepared through a novel, sustainable, and cost-effective chemical recovery process of silver from discarded ECG electrodes.
