1. Co-design of controller and routing redundancy over a wireless network

Abstract

In this paper we investigate the exploitation of redundancy when routing actuation data to a discrete-time LTI system connected to the controller via a wireless network affected by packet drops. We assume that actuation packets can be delivered from the controller to the actuator via multiple paths, each associated with a delay and a packet loss probability. We show that the joint design of controller gain and routing redundancy exploitation can tremendously improve the control performance. To achieve this goal we set up and solve a LQR problem for a class of systems that extends discrete-time Markov Jump Linear Systems, in that both continuous and discrete control signals can be actuated., Comment: In Proc. of 5th IFAC Workshop on Distributed Estimation and Control in Networked Systems, Philadelphia PA, USA

Abstract

IntroductionThe use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for assessing and treating cognitive and motor disorders is promoting home-based telerehabilitation. This approach involves ongoing monitoring within a motivating context to help patients generalize their skills. It can also reduce healthcare costs and geographic barriers by minimizing hospitalization. This systematic review focuses on investigating key aspects of telerehabilitation protocols for children with neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders, including technology used, outcomes, caregiver involvement, and dosage, to guide clinical practice and future research.MethodThis systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. The PICO framework was followed to define the search strategy for technology-based telerehabilitation interventions targeting the pediatric population (aged 0–18) with neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders. The search encompassed Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. Independent reviewers were responsible for selecting relevant papers and extracting data, while data harmonization and analysis were conducted centrally.ResultsA heterogeneous and evolving situation emerged from our data. Our findings reported that most of the technologies adopted for telerehabilitation are commercial devices; however, research prototypes and clinical software were also employed with a high potential for personalization and treatment efficacy. The efficacy of these protocols on health or health-related domains was also explored by categorizing the outcome measures according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Most studies targeted motor and neuropsychological functions, while only a minority of papers explored language or multi-domain protocols. Finally, although caregivers were rarely the direct target of intervention, their role was diffusely highlighted as a critical element of the home-based rehabilitation setting.DiscussionThis systematic review offers insights into the integration of technological devices into telerehabilitation programs for pediatric neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders. It highlights factors contributing to the effectiveness of these interventions and suggests the need for further development, particularly in creating dynamic and multi-domain rehabilitation protocols. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of promoting home-based and family-centered care, which could involve caregivers more actively in the treatment, potentially leading to improved clinical outcomes for children with neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO (CRD42020210663).

Abstract

A prolongation of the QTc-interval has been described for several opioids, including pethidine (meperidine). OBJECTIVE To evaluate in the clinical setting the frequency and risk factors associated with the QT-interval prolongation induced by meperidine. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We recruited patients requiring meperidine administration and recorded their medical history and comorbidities predisposing to QT-interval prolongation. Ionograms and electrocardiograms (ECGs) were performed at baseline and during treatment; QT was corrected using the Bazzet, Fridericia, Framinghan, and Hogdes formulas. We measured meperidine and normeperidine by gas chromatography. Values are expressed as mean ± SD (range). RESULTS 58 patients were studied (43.1% males). All patients received meperidine at a dose of 304 ± 133 (120 - 480) mg/day. Meperidine and normeperidine concentrations were 369 ± 60 (265 - 519) and 49 ± 17 (15 - 78) ng/mL, respectively. Intratreatment control found QTcB 370 ± 30 (305 - 433), QTcFri 353 ± 35 (281 - 429), QTcFra 360 ± 30 (299 - 429), QTcH 359 ± 27 (304 - 427), ΔQTcB +9 ± 42 (-90 to +136), ΔQTcFri +4 ± 45 (-86 to +137), ΔQTcFra +5 ± 40 (-77 to +129), and ΔQTcH +7 ± 40 (-76 to +129) ms. Meperidine concentration correlated with QTc-interval (R > 0.36) and ΔQTc (R > 0.69) but the correlation was even better for normeperidine concentration, QTc (R > 0.52) and ΔQTc (R > 0.81). Depending on the QTc correction formula used, 13 - 15 patients (22.41 - 25.86%) presented ΔQTc values > 30 ms, and 7 - 8 patients (12.07- 13.79%) showed ΔQTc values > 60 ms. Renal failure was associated with risk for ΔQTc > 30 ms of 3.74 (IC95% 1.73 - 8.10) and for ΔQTc > 60 ms of 4.27 (IC 95% 1.26 - 14.48). No patient developed arrhythmias during the study. CONCLUSIONS Meperidine treatment causes ECG changes (QTc-interval prolongation) in high correlation with normeperidine plasma concentration. Renal failure increases the risk. .

Abstract

A large pool of arundo mutants was developed within the WATBIO EU project with the aim to increase the genetic variability within the species as a means to increase its agronomic and industrial value. The performance in quantitative and qualitative terms of a pre-selected material was evaluated for the first time in a field plot-scale experiment during two growing seasons (2015 and 2016) under irrigated and rainfed conditions. The initial results indicate that the UniBO3 mutant show some interesting morphological (higher number of tillers, higher plant height, and shallower roots) and qualitative (higher cellulose) characteristics that could be useful to improve productivity and adaptation of arundo to evolving industrial processing techniques and to stressful environmental conditions., Proceedings of the 25th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 12-15 June 2017, Stockholm, Sweden, pp. 328-331

Abstract

The on-going EU-funded project ‘COSMOS - Camelina & crambe Oil crops as Sources for Medium-chain Oils for Specialty oleochemicals’ aims to turn two underutilized crops, camelina and crambe, into profitable, sustainable, multipurpose, non-GMO European oil crops for the production of oleochemicals. These crops do not compete with food crops in terms of agricultural lands as they can grow on less fertile soils, under low inputs (water, nitrogen, pesticides etc.). Presently, the cultivation of these oil crops is not at a commercial scale in Europe, while the majority of published data on camelina derived from trials performed mainly in the USA. From preliminary research in previous and on-going projects (ICON, EUROBIOREF, ITAKA, COSMOS) these crops emerged as ideal candidates for larger-scale development in Europe. Several field trials comparing a high number of genotypes were established across Europe (Greece, Italy, Poland and The Netherlands) aiming at identifying the most promising ones in terms of seed and oil yields and their quality. From the first results crambe and camelina showed good adaptation in all field trials. Camelina showed better adaptability to differentiate environments demonstrating more stable yields than crambe across locations. In northern environments (i.e., Poland and north Italy) crambe yield was double than in Greece; for southern environments, characterized by mild winter, the anticipation of sowing to fall/winter could be a feasible option to increase crambe yields., Proceedings of the 24th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 6-9 June 2016, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, pp. 147-150

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$ ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

Abstract

The aim of this national cross-sectional survey was to draw information on pain prevalence and intensity from a large sample of patients who were admitted to oncologic centres for different reasons and to evaluate the pain treatment and possible influencing factors.A total of 2,655 patients completed the study. Nine hundred and one patients (34%) reported pain.Higher pain levels were observed in inpatients, in the presence of bone metastases, and with low levels of Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group status. The number of patients receiving strong opioids increased with the highest levels of pain. However, a significant part of patients with moderate-severe pain were not receiving appropriate medication, patients being predominantly administered non-opioid drugs. General practitioners' attitudes did not negatively influence the opioid prescription.The results of this survey indicate a need for continuing educational and informative program in pain management for oncologists and more generally for any physician dealing with cancer patients.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is designed for the detection of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the primary energy range 100 GeV–10 TeV. Its full-coverage feature allows to lower the energy threshold about one order of magnitude with respect to sampling EAS detectors. Here the performance of the RPC array is described and the current status of the experiment is presented.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Very high energy (VHE) gamma ray astronomy is the main scientific goal of this Chinese-Italian experiment. High altitude and full coverage ensure a low energy threshold (few hundreds of GeV for primary photons), high duty-cycle and large field of view allow a continuous sky survey in the declination range from −10° to +70°. Also many features of the high energy cosmic rays are studied by ARGO-YBJ exploiting the unprecented shower reconstruction.

Abstract

Twenty-seven consecutive Italian patients with Fanconi's anaemia (FA) underwent stem cell transplantation (SCT) from an HLA-matched related donor in 10 Italian centres of the Associazione Italiana Ematologia ed Oncologia Pediatrica (AIEOP), Gruppo Italiano di Trapianto di Midollo Osseo (GITMO). Twenty-two patients (81.5%) were conditioned with low-dose (median 20 mg/kg) cyclophosphamide (Cy) and thoraco-abdominal or total body irradiation (median dose 500 cGy), five patients (18.5%) with high-dose Cy (median 120 mg/kg). Graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis was carried out with cyclosporin A in 26 cases; methotrexate (MTX) was added in eight cases. One patient received MTX alone. The median follow-up was 36 months. Ninety-two percent of patients (25 out of 27) engrafted, grade II and III acute GVHD occurred in 28% and 8% of patients, respectively, with chronic GVHD in 12.5%. Conditioning-related toxicity was mild: 4% of patients had grade III mucositis, 7.4% had grade II haemorrhagic cystitis, 14.8% had grade III liver toxicity and 11.1% had grade III renal toxicity. Transplant-related mortality at 12 months was 19.2%, survival at 36 months was 81.5%, with a median Karnofsky score of 100%. No late tumours occurred after a mean follow-up of the survivors of 5 years. None of the studied variables significantly affected the survival, including conditioning regimen, acute GVHD and clinical nonhaematological phenotype. Among the studied variables, only conditioning regimens containing high-dose Cy and the presence of genital abnormalities were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with an increased rate of acute GVHD. Our study demonstrates that the Italian FA patients undergoing SCT from an HLA-matched related donor have a very good outcome. These patients, when compared with others of different ethnic origin who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, showed a less severe nonhaematological phenotype, raising the possibility that this milder phenotype may
