Fluid pressure is a key parameter in the brittle, upper portion of the lithosphere, as it controls the stress necessary for faults to slip. In turn, fluid pressure is affected by brittle deformation, as large permeability changes occur during the seismic cycle. The interplay between fluid pressure and deformation is nevertheless mostly a theoretical model, as few data are available regarding the amplitude of fluid pressure at depth and its variations with time. Quartz veins constitute a potential time record of variations in precipitation conditions, as suggested by microstructures such as crack-seal or growth features. Hazards associated with volcanic activity at Stromboli mayinclude gas emissions and fall-outs of volcanic ash and bombs, but more global hazards can not bedismissed such as large-scale eruptions or tsunamis generated in the Tyrrhenian sea as a result of flankcollapse of the volcano. Stromboli is actively monitored by italian groups and institutions. The presentproject complements these efforts in providing an experimentally-based modelling of how magmaascends beneath Stromboli. Knowledge of the physicochemical properties of magmas may improve inthe long-term the interpretation of geophysical signals and the understanding of the real-timebehaviour of the volcano.Its normal activity is periodically interrupted by emission of lava flow or much more energeticexplosions. The most energetic explosions are distinguished in major explosions (1-2 per year) andparoxysms (one event in 5 to 15 years).Most of the existing works and dynamic models of the Stromboli's activity are done on the normalactivity, but, maybe, studying the paroxysm can be the important means to understand its persistentactivity.The paroxysm permits to study mingling, crystallisation and degassing processes in the volcanicsystem. During major explosion and paroxysm, a particular product constituted by a yellow pumiceintermingled with a black scoria is emitted. The yellow pumice is a crystal-poor (< 10 vol % ofcrystals), gold-coloured, highly vesiculated pumice and represent the most primitive magma evererupted at Stromboli; the black scoria is crystal-rich (~50 vol % of crystals), rather dense, lowervesiculated, usual product of the normal activity. The two portions are so different in features, but sosimilar in bulk chemical composition ranging from K-rich basalt and shoshonitic basalt. They displayonly slight variations in major and trace elements contents, and rare earth element patterns. The verybig differences are played by the volatile content (H2O-CO2-S) on the two part of rock.The aims of this petrological experimentally study are: (i) to characterize the source region ofmagmatism, (ii) to constrain the P-T-aH2O during the ascent path of yellow pumice magma, (iii) toconstrain the derivation of the black scoria from the yellow pumice magma during the rapid ascentpath in the shallow level of the Stromboli conduit.The volatiles constituents play a narrower importance in the phase relations as in the chemical andphysical properties of the magmas. We planned two series of experiments, an isobaric 4 kbar (1175-1050°C) section and an isothermal 1100°C (4-0.5 kbar) section, in variable water content, fromundersaturation near to the water saturation. We chosen as starting material one of the most primitiveyellow pumice never erupted. The starting composition will be prepared as glass, to avoid any residualcrystal, and glass finely crushed. Some additional experiment was carried out in order to ascertain the primitivity of our starting composition. Few experiments were done in mixed fluid volatiles (H2O +/-CO2 +/- S).According our experimental data yellow pumice is a near primitive magma in equilibrium withclinopyroxenite source at P-T of stagnation: the first phase to appears on the liquidus is pyroxene;olivine follows at lower temperature, for lower hydration conditions. Clinopyroxene plays animportant role at higher pressure conditions (4 kb), plagioclase instead is the most relevant phase atlower pressure. It was possible to derive an experimental geobarometer from the cotectic ol/cpx ratio:if we apply this correlation between pressure and cpx(ol ratio, we can obtain a pressure ofcrystallisation for yellow pumice (3.7-2.9 kb) and black scoria (1.2-0.6 kb). Our experimental data,show a clear correlation between Ca content in clinopyroxene and water content in the melt and thiscorrelation can be used a geohygrometer in the 3-phase assemblage, to infer the water content innatural samples. The last important results are about empirical solubility data of both together H2OCO2that are in bad accordance with most used thermodynamic models that overestimate the pressureof saturation of nearly 50%; Le Stromboli est caractérisé par une activité persistente. Pendant les explosions majeures et les paroxysmes, est émis un produit particulier constitué par une ponce jaune mélangée à une scorie noire. La ponce jaune est pauvre en cristaux (< 10 % vol), très vésiculée et représente le magma le plus primitif jamais émis a Stromboli; la scorie noire est, au contraire, riche en cristaux (~50 vol %), plutôt dense, très peu vésiculée et représente le produit de l'activité normale du Stromboli. Les deux parties sont très différentes texturalement, mais elles ont une composition de roche totale très similaire (entre HKCA et SHO). Elles montrent seulement des petites variations dans les teneurs de éléments majeurs et en traces. Les différences plus accentuées concernent les teneurs en volatils (H2O-CO2-S). L'objectif de ma recherche était de : (i) caractériser la région source du magmatisme (ii) donner des informations sur les conditions P-T-aH2O pendant la montée de la ponce jaune, (iii) suivre le parcours qui transforme en scorie noire la ponce jaune à travers sa montée rapide dans le niveau plus superficiel du Stromboli.Les volatils jouent le rôle principal dans les relations de phases soit dans les propriétés chimiques soit dans les propriétés physiques du magma. Deux séries d'expériences ont été réalisées, à partir d'une ponce jaune éruptée dans un période postérieure à 1600 AD et antérieure à 800 AD: une section isobarique – 4 kb - entre 1175°C et 1150°C et une section isotherme – 1100°C – entre 400MPa et 50 MPa à teneur en eau variable (de la sou-saturation à la saturation) ont été réalisées. Quelques expériences ont étés réalisées pour vérifier la nature primitive de notre composition et quelques expériences ont été réalisées en présence de volatils mixtes (H2O +/- CO2 +/- S).Les résultats montrent que la ponce jaune, utilisée comme matériel de départ est un magma primaire, en équilibre avec la clinopyroxènite-source à P-T de genèse. La première phase à cristalliser est le clinopyroxène, suivi de l'olivine. Le pyroxène joue un rôle très important à pression élevée (4kb). Le plagioclase, au contraire, est la phase prépondérante à basse pression. Il a été possible d'établir un géo-baromètre expérimental à partir du rapport ol/cpx. En appliquant cette corrélation expérimentale entre pression et rapport ol/cpx aux magmas naturels, on peut déduire une pression de cristallisation de 3.7-2.9 kb pour la ponce et 1.2-0.6 kb pour la scorie. Les données expérimentales montrent en outre une claire corrélation entre le teneur en Ca dans le pyroxène et le teneur en eau du verre: on peut donc utiliser cette corrélation comme un géo-hygromètre dans un assemblage à trois phases, pour en déduire le teneur en eau de échantillons naturels. Le dernier résultat important concernes les données empiriques de solubilité de H2O-CO2 qui sont en désaccord avec les modèles thermodynamiques normalement utilisés qui surestiment la pression de saturation de presque 50%.

International audience; The island of Pantelleria is one of the best known localities of bimodal mafic-felsic magmatism (alkali basalt and trachyte-pantellerite). Among the felsic rocks, the coexistence in a single eruption of products of both trachyte and pantellerite compositions is limited to few occurrences, the Green Tuff (GT) ignimbrite being one of these. The GT is compositionally zoned from pantellerite (70.1 wt% SiO2, mol Na+K/Al = 1.86, 1871 ppm Zr) at the base to crystal-rich (>30 vol%) comenditic trachyte (63.4 wt% SiO2, mol Na+K/Al = 1.10, 265 ppm Zr) at the top, although the pantellertic compositions dominate the erupted volume. We present here new data on melt inclusions (MIs) from the pantellerite portions of the GT eruption and, most importantly, from the trachyte member, which have not been studied in-situ by previous work focused on the GT. We document the first occurrence of trachytic melt inclusions in the late-erupted member, whose im-portance resides in the fact that trachytes were known mostly as crystal-rich lavas or ignimbrites, all variably affected by crystal accu-mulation. Besides the obvious inferences on the interplay between parental-derivative magmas, this evidence adds also some helpful ele-ments in understanding zoning of silicic and peralkaline (i.e. low-viscosity) magma chambers. Trace elements compositions of MIs reveal that trachyte melts are of two types: (i) a low-Ba, directly descending from basaltic melts by 60-70 % of fractional crystallisation, and (ii)a high-Ba that might be affected by processes of feldspar dissolution and entrainment of the resulting small-scale melts in some MIs. MIs hosted in the deep-seated trachyte body are H2O-poor (≤ 1.2 wt %) with respect to the early erupted (and shallower) pantellerite magma(≤ 4.2 wt %), raising the possibility that either trachyte magma was H2O-undesaturated, or clinopyroxene hosted melt inclusions whichsuffered consistent H2O loss.

Sulfur is an important volatile element involved in magmatic systems. Its quantification in silicate glasses relies on state-of-the-art techniques such as electronprobe microanalyses (EPMA) or X-ray absorption spectroscopy but is often complicated by the fact that S dissolved in silicate glasses can adopt several oxidation states (S6+for sulfates or S2-for sulfides). In the present work, we use micro-Raman spectroscopy on a series of silicate glasses to quantify the S content. The database is constituted by 47 silicate glasses of various compositions (natural and synthetic) with S content ranging from 1179 to 13 180 ppm. Most of the investigated glasses have been synthesized at high pressure and high temperature and under fully oxidizing conditions. The obtained Raman spectra are consistent with these fO2conditions and only S6+is present and shows a characteristic peak located at ∼1000 cm-1corresponding to the symmetric stretch of the sulfate molecular group (ν1SO42-SO42-). The intensity of the ν1SO42-SO42-peak is linearly correlated to the parts per million of S6+determined by EPMA. Using subsequent deconvolution of the Raman spectra, we established an equation using the ratio between the areas of the ν1SO42-SO42-peak and the silicate network species (Qn) in the high-frequency region: ppm S6+=34371ASO42-AQn±609. ppm S6+=34371 ASO42-A Qnpm609. We tested our calibration on several silicate glasses equilibrated under moderately reducing conditions (QFM+0.8 ≤fO2≤ QFM+1.4) in which S is dissolved as both SO42-SO42-and S2-. We also analyzed several olivine-hosted melt inclusions collected from Etna for which the fO2and S speciation are unknown. For these samples, the S content estimated by the Raman calibration is systematically lower than the total S measured by EPMA. We combined both methods to estimate the S2-content not accounted for by Raman and derive the S speciation and fO2conditions. The derived fO2is consistent with the imposed fO2for synthesized glasses and with current assumed fO2conditions for basaltic melt inclusions from Etna.
