The stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) is crucial for the global carbon cycle and serves as a key indicator of soil quality and eco-system function. In Karst areas, SOC stability is influenced by unique geological conditions. Studying SOC stability in these regions is significant for understanding regional ecosystem functions and the role of SOC in mitigating global climate change. This review examines the fractions and stability of SOC in Karst areas, analyzing the impacts of key factors such as rocky desertification, land use changes, and vegetation restoration on SOC stability, along with their underlying mechanisms. It also discusses the current challenges and opportunities in SOC stability. Turning the dirt, we have cultivated back into soil is critical to securing our planetary future. The world’s principal existential challenges – food, water and energy security, climate change abatement, biodiversity protection and human health1 – are all underpinned by soil dysfunction. Yet, little is known about soil function, soil services and threats to soil, or how the state of our soils, determined by land use and land management, cause desertification and climate change. As greenhouse gases are transparent to incoming solar radiation, we must mitigate excess atmospheric heat by reducing the amount of organic matter mined from the soil, because when the sun’s rays fall on exposed, drained, baked dry soil, most of the solar radiation is converted from latent heat to sensible heat. Soil specific policy and legislation must be developed to regulate sources of excess sensible heat, consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Dryland occupies about 46% of the global land surface area (except Antarctica) and is the most vulnerable area to climate change. From the conditions of vegetation and land surface wetness and blown sand phenomena, a simple observation system was developed to monitor regional wind erosion and applied to Khuld of Mongolia, which is sensitive to drought and desertification. The system was composed of instruments that observed blown sand, vegetation amount, land surface wetness, and landscape features related to regional wind erosion. Sixteen blown sand and eight sandstorm events were evaluated from 5 March to 5 June 2023 (i.e., during the Asian dust season in northeast Asia). The normalized difference vegetation index and visible images showed that the vegetation amount was considerably less, and the developed moisture index related to land surface wetness indicated dry conditions. Combining the results of blown sand, these indices, and visible images, land surface conditions during the analysis period were likely to occur with blown sand events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the eschatological influence of the American desert on the metanarrative structure of Tanguy Viel's novel La Disparition de Jim Sullivan (2013). Dwayne, the character en abyme, fantasizes about desert adventures but as he progresses towards the arid place, the boundaries between the two diegetic levels vanish. The notion of hyperreality, pervading the novel, reflects Dwayne's ethnocentric posture. He is absorbed in his fantasies and unable to contemplate his environment without artifice. Bearing on the notion of desertification, I demonstrate that the desert, long considered an empty space to be filled, reclaims its rights over humanity with agency. In the last chapter, Dwayne commits suicide in the desert, and the arid place absorbs the character in its turn. The desert is no longer perceived as an archaic space of un-culture, but as the new place where anxieties about the future of humankind crystallize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Violation of nomadic forms of pasture use leads to vegetation degradation, periodic large-scale outbreaks of deflation and desertification, and transformation of the physicochemical properties of sandy soils in the arid zone. Practice has shown that an effective means of restoring their production potential is the creation of multi-tiered vegetation cover—forest and pasture lands. The purpose of this study is to assess the current state, feed productivity, attractiveness, and sustainability of forest pastures and to develop proposals for their optimization. This research was carried out through a comprehensive study of natural objects on temporary trial plots using standard methods of agroforestry, geobotanical and soil research, and statistical data processing. It has been established that on the thick blown sands of the Nogai steppe in forest pastures with a tree layer of Robiniapseudoacacia and Ulmuspumila, the forage yield increases to 2–3 t/ha (in terms of hay) and, depending on the seasons of the year, is 1.5–3.5 times higher than that on natural pastures. On the fine sands of the Black Lands, there are forest pastures formed by plantings of Krascheninnikovia ceratoides and Calligonum aphyllum. At the age of 30–40 years, they produce 1.5–3 t/ha of dry food, which is 1.4–2 times higher than in the surrounding steppe. On weakly and unwinnowed sands of the Astrakhan Trans-Volga region, in 20- to 60-year-old forest–pastures with protective fodder plantings of Haloxylon aphyllum, C. aphyllum, and K. ceratoides, the consumed mass of shrubs is 0.1–4 t/ha, while the grass stand is 0.3–1 t/ha, which is 20% more than in the open steppe. Pastures with tree and shrub layers attract animals and are more resistant to deflation. The functional durability of silvopastures depends on the technology of their creation, maintenance, and operation regime. Dust storms and dry haze are an unfavorable meteorological factor for the cities of the Aral Sea Region. The mean annual number of days with haze in Central Asian cities ranges from 10 to 20. Dust makes poorer the aspect of areas, but its impact on urban planning has been incompletely studied and the content of fine dust particles in the air of cities has not been monitored. The Afghan wind (garmsil: fiery, hot, dry wind with dust), which attracts particular attention, is a dust storm that suddenly starts in the deserts of Afghanistan and on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea (it is now called Aralkum (the Turkish kum signifies sand)). This is a real salt desert, containing pesticides and chemicals dangerous for human health. They penetrated rivers as fertilizers used by people and then flowed into the sea. They now cause significant damage to the cities and to the economy of Central Asian countries. Wind transport of dust from natural sources and, as a result, the dustiness of the urban environment are analyzed in this article. This problem is particularly urgent for most large cities in Central Asia, but has not been studied sufficiently. The dust factor is not sufficiently taken into account, when making urban planning decisions even in areas with intensive wind and dust activity, such as the Aral Sea Region, where it is related to natural and climatic conditions. More and more cool agricultural lands are now destroyed and used for building construction in many cities, which may exert a strong effect on the quality of life in the next few years. Not long ago, dustiness was considered only as a factor that creates uncomfortable conditions, but today, it is associated with morbidity and mortality of the population. A high dust content in the air harms landscaped areas, along highways and streets in particular. The protection of buildings from direct sunlight and dust consists in the use of sun protection devices, panels, and ventilated facades. One of the modern trends in architecture consists in the introduction of the technology of kinetic facades, which are formed of elements of different shapes and materials. When the proposed methods are implemented, there is a real opportunity to improve the quality of atmospheric air in cities located in complicated landscape conditions, which will directly affect the improvement of human health. The current state of a rare medicinal species, the "green-flowered" hound's tongue (Cynoglossum viridiflorum Pall. ex Lehm.), of Uzbekistan growing in the Karakalpak part of the Ustyurt Plateau, based on the structure of its cenopopulations is examined. New data is reported with respect to the ontogeny and ontogenetic structure of cenotic populations of this rare endemic, and plant communities with its participation are characterized. In the Ustyurt conditions, the vegetation cycle of C. viridiflorum spans approximately eight months from March to October. The studied populations were shown to be normal and full-membered. The left-sided ontogenetic spectrum is characteristic of C. viridiflorum due to the high seed productivity and germination capacity. Altogether, this reflects the biological characteristics of C. viridiflorum and points to a stable state of the species population in the Ustyurt conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Land degradation is a global issue with severe implications for local sustainability, regional development, and resilience of socio-environmental systems. Curbing land degradation has become a priority in international strategies and sustainable development goals. The present study examines land vulnerability to degradation and its influencing factors in Italian provinces over four decades (1970–2010). After a comprehensive scrutiny of the best regression strategy based on econometric tests, spatial effects were modelled with the Spatially Autoregressive model run cross-section (1970, 1990, 2010), comparing the results of different weighting matrices representative of short-haul, medium-haul, and long-haul spatial interactions. Multiple (socioeconomic) drivers of land degradation were identified and classified according to their spatial effects. The results highlight the role of spatial interactions in shaping territorial models of land vulnerability to degradation, distinguishing on-site and off-site impacts. These outcomes emphasize the importance of comprehensive approaches that address a place-specific ensemble of socioeconomic drivers in tackling land degradation. Air pollution as a result of desertification and dust transportation is one of the critical environmental challenges in the arid and semi-arid regions. Urmia Lake, the largest inland lake of Iran has lost most of its water over the past 2 decades. The lake bed is known as one of the aerosol pollution sources in the northwestern Iran. Although recent studies contributed to investigate the impacts of the drying up of Urmia Lake on the local and regional air quality, there is still a need to identify spatiotemporal aerosol pollution and dust generation sources in the study area. In this study, remote sensing techniques, fuzzy logic and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used to identify dust hot spots in the south and east parts of the Lake, where recent studies have highlighted the dramatic extent of salinization and desertification. Based on the results of this study, the lake's contribution to the local aerosol pollution declines with increasing distance from it. The results indicated that the potential of dust forming on the east side of the lake has increased, presenting a variety of challenges for inhabitants, including health and biological hazards. The fuzzy results have a high correlation with Electrical Conductivity (EC) (0.69), Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) (0.46), and Leaf Area Index (0.45), respectively, while wind speed (0.22) and slope (0.24) have the lower correlation. The results of PCA indicate that AOD, Digital Elevation Model, and EC have the highest percentage in identifying dust generation sources among the effective parameters in determining dust production sources. Wildfires are recognized as major contributors to forest loss and soil degradation on a global scale. Understanding the cumulative effects of fire regimes on forest ecosystems and soil dynamics necessitates a deeper exploration of wildfire-vegetation-soil interactions over the long term. This study delves into the wildfire-landscape dynamics within the "Baixa Limia Serra do Xurés" Natural Park, a region prone to fires in Galicia, Spain. By analyzing available statistical and remote sensing data, we identified significant shifts in fire regimes and landscape dynamics between the periods of 2000-2010 and 2010-2020. Our findings indicate a potential extension of the fire season, reflecting the impacts of climate change. Despite improvements in firefighting capabilities, the occurrence of large fires is on the rise in the Natural Park, underscoring the need for proactive management strategies in such areas. Notably, significant fire events in 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2020 extensively affected wooded areas, constituting the majority of the burned area. Shrubs and forests emerged as particularly vulnerable, with varying degrees of burn severity influencing post-fire vegetation recovery rates. While shrublands expanded their coverage between 2000 and 2010, rocky areas with sparse vegetation showed an increase over the subsequent decade (2010-2020), indicating soil degradation and potential desertification in areas affected by recurrent and severe fires, especially within zones designated for the highest levels of protection (with fire rotation periods of less than 1 year). In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the impacts of wildfires, changes in land cover, and post-fire soil-vegetation dynamics, which can inform management and conservation efforts in fire-prone mountainous regions. Aeolian sandy soil and loess soil of the Mu Us Sandy Land are used as the research material in this study to investigate the effect of soil compounding on the improvement of aeolian sandy soil and to provide a feasible approach for sand prevention and sand control. In particular, loess soils were compounded at 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by volume percentage of the compounded soils. The improvement benefits of compounded soils on their textural properties, water-holding capacity, and fertilizer-retention capacity at different blending ratios were evaluated. The results showed that following the compounding of aeolian sandy and loess soils, with the increase of the loess proportion, the texture type of the compounded soil transforms from sandy soil to loamy sandy soil to sandy loam to loamy soil to powdery loam. Moreover, granular gradation was observed, the bulk density gradually decreased, the capillary porosity gradually increased, and the performance of water- and fertilizer-holding properties gradually increased and strengthened. The spatial variability of compounded soil bulk density, capillary porosity, and the water-holding and fertilizer-retention properties was almost entirely controlled by the proportion of loess soil. A theoretical basis is provided in this study for aeolian sandy soil improvement in the Mu Us Sandy Land that can be extended to similar areas, providing a feasible sand management approach. Machine learning methods have improved in recent years and provide increasingly powerful tools for understanding landscape evolution. In this study, we used the random forest method based on Google Earth Engine to evaluate the desertification dynamics in northern China from 1995 to 2020. We selected Landsat series image bands, remote sensing inversion data, climate baseline data, land use data, and soil type data as variables for majority voting in the random forest method. The method's average classification accuracy was 91.6% ± 5.8 [mean ± SD], and the average kappa coefficient was 0.68 ± 0.09, suggesting good classification results. The random forest classifier results were consistent with the results of visual interpretation for the spatial distribution of different levels of desertification. From 1995 to 2000, the area of aeolian desertification increased at an average rate of 9977 km2 yr−1, and from 2000 to 2005, from 2005 to 2010, from 2010 to 2015, and from 2015 to 2020, the aeolian desertification decreased at an average rate of 2535, 3462, 1487, and 4537 km2 yr−1, respectively. Litter and root decomposition is an important source of soil organic matter and nutrients. To ascertain the contribution of litter and root to natural grassland nutrients in rocky desertification areas, from March 2017 to January 2018, the continuous soil column method, collector method, and litter decomposition method were used to study the soil nutrients, litter and root biomass, decomposition, and nutrient release of potential, moderate, and severe rocky desertification grasslands, as well as their responses to rocky desertification. The results showed that the litter and root decomposition rate showed a trend of being first fast and then slow, and the decomposition rate of litter and root was greater than 50% after 300 days. The annual litter decomposition rates of potential, moderate, and severe rocky desertification grasslands were 69.98%, 62.14%, and 49.79%, respectively, and the annual decomposition rates of root were 73.64%, 67.61%, and 64.09%, respectively. With a deepening degree of rocky desertification, the litter and root decomposition rate decreased. The decomposition coefficients, k, of litter in potential, moderate, and severe rocky desertification grasslands were 1.128, 0.896, and 0.668, respectively, and the decomposition coefficients, k, of root were 1.152, 1.018, and 0.987, respectively. The nutrient release processes of litter and root were different, and the release mode ultimately manifests as "release". In rocky desertification grasslands, the organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK) released by litter and root decomposition were 18.93–263.03 g·m−2·yr−1, 1.79–5.59 g·m−2·yr−1, 0.18–0.47 g·m−2·yr−1, and 0.66–3.70 g·m−2·yr−1, respectively. The contribution of root to soil nutrients was greater than that of litter. The degree of rocky desertification was negatively correlated with the biomass, decomposition rate, and nutrient return amount of litter and root. The results of this study provide direct field evidence and illustrate the contribution of litter and root decomposition in rocky desertification grasslands to soil nutrients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil hydrology seriously affects the prevention of desertification in karst areas. However, water infiltration in the different soil layers of secondary forests and artificial forests in karst areas remains uncertain. This lack of clarity is also the factor that constrains local vegetation restoration. Therefore, monitoring and simulating the priority transport of soil moisture will help us understand the shallow soil moisture transport patterns after artificial vegetation restoration in the local area, providing a reference for more scientific restoration of the ecological environment and enhancement of carbon storage in karst areas. The integration of soil physical property assessments, computed tomography (CT) scanning, dye tracing studies, and HYDRUS-2D modeling was utilized to evaluate and contrast the attributes of soil macropores and the phenomenon of preferential flow across various forestland categories. This approach allowed for a comprehensive analysis of how the soil structure and water movement are influenced by different forest ecosystems and infiltration head simulations (5 mm, 15 mm, 35 mm, and 55 mm) to elucidate the dynamics of water movement across diverse soil types within karst regions, to identify the causes of water leakage due to preferential flow in secondary forests, and to understand the mechanisms of water conservation and reduction in artificial forests adopting a multifaceted approach. This study demonstrated that (1) the soil hydrological capacity of a plantation forest was 20% higher than a natural forest, which may be promoted by the clay content and distribution. (2) Afforestation-enhanced soils in karst regions demonstrate a significant capacity to mitigate the loss of clay particles during episodes of preferential flow and then improve the soil erosion resistance by about 5 times, which can effectively control desertification in karst area. (3) The uniform distribution of macropores in plantation forest soil was conducive to prevent water leakage more effectively than the secondary forest but was incapable of hindering the occurrence of preferential flow. The secondary forest had a very developed preferential flow phenomenon, and soil clay deposition occurred with an increase in depth. (4) Moreover, the results for preferential flow showed that the matrix flow depth did not increase with the increase in water quantity. Short-term and high-intensity heavy rainfall events facilitated the occurrence of preferential flow. Infiltration along the horizontal and vertical directions occurred simultaneously. These results could facilitate a further understanding of the contribution of the plantation to soil amelioration and the prevention of desertification in karst areas, and provide some suggestions for the sustainable development of forestry in karst areas where plantation restoration is an important ingredient. Introduction: Strategically managing livestock grazing in arid regions optimizes land use and reduces the damage caused by overgrazing. Controlled grazing preserves the grassland ecosystem and fosters sustainability despite resource limitations. However, uneven resource distribution can lead to diverse grazing patterns and land degradation, particularly in undulating terrains. Methods: In this study, we developed a herbivore foraging algorithm based on a resource selection function model to analyze foraging distribution patterns, predict the probability of foraging, and identify the determinants of foraging probability in cattle. The study area was a complex desert landscape encompassing dunes and interdunes. Data on cattle movements and resource distribution were collected and analyzed to model and predict foraging behavior. Results: Our findings revealed that cattle prefer areas with abundant vegetation in proximity to water sources and avoid higher elevations. However, abundant resource availability mitigated these impacts and enhanced the role of water points, particularly during late grazing periods. The analysis showed that available resources primarily determine foraging distribution patterns and lessen the effects of landforms and water distance on patch foraging. Discussion: The results suggest that thoughtful water source placement and the subdivision of pastures into areas with varied terrain are crucial for sustainable grazing management. By strategically managing these factors, land degradation can be minimized, and the ecological balance of grassland ecosystems can be maintained. Background: In recent decades, the Loess Plateau is one of the regions in China that urgently needs ecological governance due to the severe situation of soil erosion and land desertification. Due to the impact of climate change and human activities, the threat to the ecological space security of the Loess Plateau has intensified. This paper reveals the time lag effect of ecological engineering construction on the changes in the ecosystem service capacity index of the Loess Plateau, providing a scientific basis and decision-making reference for the sustainable development of the study area and improving the quality and management of ecological engineering construction, which is of great significance for building a solid ecological security barrier on the Loess Plateau. Methods: Based on the hierarchical analysis method, quantitative indicator method, spatial correlation analysis method and two-way fixed effect model, this paper analyzes the temporal and spatial changes of the ecosystem service capacity index of the Loess Plateau under the background of ecological engineering implementation. Results: The results showed that: 1) the vegetation coverage of the Loess Plateau increased with the increase of the area of ecological engineering construction, and showed a fluctuating growth distribution characteristic from southeast to northwest in space; 2) the water conservation capacity index, wind and sand fixation capacity index, biodiversity capacity index and comprehensive service capacity index of the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2020 all showed exponential growth, which were highly coupled with the growth and change of vegetation coverage area in time and space; 3) the cold spots and hot spots of the ecosystem service capacity index of the Loess Plateau showed a step-by-step decrease of "hot in the south and cold in the north" in spatial distribution; the hot spots and sub-hot spots showed a reciprocating cycle from aggregation to fragmentation in time and space; the cold spots and sub-cold spots were mainly distributed in the northwest region. 4) The changes in the ecosystem service capacity index of the Loess Plateau were mainly affected by factors such as the cumulative project implementation area, urbanization rate and precipitation. Conclusion: The construction of ecological engineering on the Loess Plateau has achieved remarkable results. The growth of vegetation coverage area and ecosystem service capacity index on the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2020 has promoted the recovery of ecosystem functions. Rangeland assessment in the arid and semi-arid regions of Patagonia, Argentina, is a key tool both in livestock management and in environmental evaluations and monitoring of complex processes such as desertification and the impact of climate change. Although most rangeland assessment methods have assigned efforts to data resolution (field assessment plots) or information extension (landscape-scale classifications using remote sensing), the temporal variation of the vegetation has received less attention. It can be argued that the reasons for this deficit respond to the cost of carrying out field evaluations over time and/or to the short series of satellite data available until a couple of decades ago. However, a current advantage is that there are already more than 20 years of satellite data series, which opens up new possibilities to guide greater efforts in the study of the dynamics, that is, the temporal and spatiotemporal variability of the vegetation productivity. Our objective was to evaluate the application of a vegetation functional classification method, analyzing the complementation of information between structural and functional aspects of rangelands at a farm scale. In particular, we compared the results obtained by a classification of landscape units and physiognomy of vegetation and the results of a classification with a characterization of the dynamics of the vegetation productivity from the protocol that we have called Rangeland Functional Archetypes. The results emphasize the need to incorporate the dynamics of vegetation productivity as a classifying factor and not as a dependent variable of a previously defined structural classification. We discuss the potential and future steps to move forward in the integration of both approaches at the farm scale in the livestock systems of Patagonia, as a tool for a complementary structural and functional assessment of rangelands, oriented towards planning and adaptive management. Interdependence of ecological and social systems is widely acknowledged, but consideration of how local communities are influenced by processes at other sectors or scales is often omitted. This research addresses this gap by examining the implementation of China's national environmental programs (NEPs) to combat desertification. We investigate (a) the changes in local social-ecological systems and the role of the NEPs therein since the year 2000; (b) how the changes have affected local livelihoods and behaviors and attitudes toward the NEPs and the land; and (c) the role of other drivers in the changes and their implications. Interviews and surveys were conducted with scientists, grassroots implementers, and local farmers and herders. Secondary socioeconomic data were used to understand broader changes and drivers. Our results indicate that the NEPs generated both positive and negative biophysical and socioeconomic changes, and that they were both supported and disrupted by institutions at other sectors and scales. Although farmers and herders appreciated an improved environment and living standards, they suffered from other changes, such as reduced arable land area, rising costs of living and production, precarious markets, and extreme weather events. Absence of social security and limited social capital made farmers and herders unable to engage in long-term practices that support land conservation and their well-being. The findings highlight the need to foster systemic resilience in local communities through the provision of social security and social capital building to navigate the changing world. Ecosystem stability arises from the interplay of species diversity, environmental conditions, and external disturbances. Understanding the structure of plant communities, interspecific relationships, and community stability in urban ecosystems is fundamental to ecological restoration and community development. This study utilized the karst city of Guiyang as a case study and employed the α diversity index, variance ratio method (VR), χ2‐test, Pearson correlation test, Spearman rank correlation test, M. Godron stability, and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The research focused on analyzing the species diversity, interspecific associations, community stability, and environmental factors of lithophytic moss at various elevations (989–1398 m). The findings revealed the presence of 58 species belonging to 27 genera and 13 families of lithophytic moss in the study area. Notably, the Brachytheciaceae and Pottiaceae emerged as dominant, exhibiting a broad ecological range and adaptation mechanisms, thereby playing a crucial role in the ecological environment of rocky desertification. The study observed that the highest species richness and dominance values of lithophytic moss were recorded at the N4 (1296–1398 m) elevation gradient, while the highest species diversity and uniformity values were observed at the N3 (1194–1295 m) elevation gradient, indicating a significant impact of altitude on lithobryophyte species diversity, particularly at middle and high altitudes. The analysis of interspecific associations and stability indicated a predominantly negative overall association within the lithophytic moss community, suggesting an early stage of succession, with weak interspecific associations and correlations among dominant pairs, tending towards relative independence. Only the communities at N2 (1092–1193 m) elevation exhibited stability, while the other communities were in an unstable stage, showing no significant correlation with species diversity. Furthermore, light intensity (182–129300 lux) exerted the greatest influence on community stability. Additionally, air humidity (36.5–52.3%) and altitude (998–1327 m) emerged as the primary environmental factors influencing community distribution, with a close and positive correlation between the two. These results hold significant reference value for promoting the succession and steady development of vegetation in rocky desertification areas and enhancing the conservation and restoration of vegetation community diversity in karst urban ecosystems. Desertification is a major threat to biodiversity in arid areas of the world, partly because many organisms in these regions already exist at or near the limits of their movement and physiology. Here, we used molecular data to investigate patterns of persistence and dispersal in an ecologically and economically important carpenter bee (Xylocopa grisescens Lepeletier) found throughout the semiarid Caatinga region of Brazil. We used a genome‐wide approach (double digest restriction‐site associated DNA, ddRAD) to gather genetic data from bees sampled from eight sites within a semiarid region subject to desertification in Northeastern Brazil. Across all populations, we observed a consistent heterozygosity and effective population size deficit along with low genetic differentiation. We did not find strong evidence of dispersal limitations caused by desertification in this study system despite data collection from sites up to 300 km distant. Thus, our data suggest that human‐mediated changes in the Caatinga, such as habitat loss, have impacted the population genetic patterns of X. grisescens. However, these impacts have also been softened by the species' biological characteristics, such as its relatively high capacity for movement. Monitoring areas susceptible to desertification contributes to the strategic development of regions located in environments of extreme hydric and social vulnerability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the process of soil degradation in the Desertification Nucleus of Cabrobó (DNC) over the past three decades using remote sensing techniques. This study used primary climatic data from TerraClimate, geospatial data of land use and land cover (LULC), and vegetation indices (SAVI and LAI) via Google Earth Engine (GEE) from Landsat 5/TM and 8/OLI satellites, and established the aridity index (AI) from 1992 to 2022. The results indicated 10 predominant LULC classes with native vegetation suppression, particularly in agriculture and urbanization. SAVI ranged from −0.84 to 0.90, with high values influenced by La Niña episodes and increased rainfall; conversely, El Niño episodes worsened the rainfall regime in the DNC region. Based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), it was possible to correlate normal and severe drought events in the DNC with years under the influence of El Niño and La Niña phases. In summary, the AI images indicated that the DNC remained semi-arid and that the transition to an arid region is a cyclical and low-frequency phenomenon, occurring in specific periods and directly influenced by El Niño and La Niña phenomena. The Mann–Kendall analysis showed no increasing trend in AI, with a Tau of −0.01 and a p-value of 0.97. During the analyzed period, there was an increase in Non-Vegetated Areas, which showed a growing trend with a Tau of 0.42 in the Mann–Kendall analysis, representing exposed soil areas. Annual meteorological conditions remained within the climatic pattern of the region, with annual averages of precipitation and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) close to 450 mm and an average temperature of 24 °C, showing changes only during El Niño and La Niña events, and did not show significant increasing or decreasing trends in the Mann–Kendall analysis. The use of native plants for arid land restoration requires the application of pre‐germination treatments to alleviate seed dormancy mechanisms. As it is known, scarification allows several valuable species to overcome the primary forms of dormancy. However, supplying large quantities of scarified seeds at a low cost represents a significant challenge. In this context, our objective was to evaluate locally constructed machines accessible to people of degraded lands in a state of poverty. The effectiveness was evaluated by comparing two native shrubs from South American arid lands, Larrea divaricata and L. cuneifolia. Four treatments were applied: control (T0), mechanical scarification with a hand drill equipped with sandpaper on its head (T1), and mechanical scarification for 15 seconds (T2) and 30 seconds (T3) with a self‐constructed machine, capable of regulating pressure and speed. For both species, the germination probability was higher with T2 (0.82 ± 0.02) compared to T0 (0.28 ± 0.03) and T1 (0.65 ± 0.03). T3 presented intermediate values (0.75 ± 0.03) but did not differ significantly from T1 and T2. Salinity-induced desertification is a pressing environmental issue that poses a significant threat to the sustainability of oasis ecosystems worldwide. These ecosystems are vital to the livelihoods of millions of people living in hyper-arid, arid and semi-arid regions, providing essential resources such as food, water and other necessities. However, overexploitation of natural resources, changes in land use and climate change have led to the degradation of these ecosystems, resulting in soil salinisation, waterlogging and other adverse effects. Combating salinity-induced desertification requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both the underlying causes of ecosystem degradation and the direct consequences for local communities. The strategy may include measures for sustainable land use, reforestation and water conservation. It is also essential to involve local communities in these activities and to ensure that their perspectives are heard. The aim of this article is to examine the causes and processes of salinity-induced desertification in oasis ecosystems and the implications for their sustainability. It also examines strategies that are being used to prevent desertification and promote sustainable oasis management. Desertification and salt stress are major causes of terrestrial ecosystem loss worldwide, and the Gobi, representing a salt-stressed area in inland China, has a major impact on the ecosystems and biodiversity of its surrounding environment. The restoration of the Gobi Desert is an important way to control its expansion, but there are few studies on the evaluation of restoration. In this study, soils under different restoration scenarios, namely, soils in restored areas (R1, R2), semi-restored areas (SR1, SR2), and unrestored control areas (C1, C2), were used to investigate differences in microbial diversity and physicochemical properties. The results showed that the soil was mainly dominated by particles of 4–63 μm (26.45–37.94%) and >63 μm (57.95–72.87%). Across the different restoration levels, the soil pH (7.96–8.43) remained basically unchanged, salinity decreased from 9.23–2.26 to 0.24–0.25, and water content remained constant (10.98–12.27%) except for one restored sample in which it was higher (22.32%). The effective Al, Cu, and Zn in the soil increased, but only slightly. Total organic matter (TOM) decreased from 3.86–5.20% to 1.31–1.47%, and total organic nitrogen (TON) decreased from 0.03–0.06% to 0.01–0.02%, but the difference in total organic carbon (TOC) was not significant. High-throughput testing revealed that the bacterial population of the restored area was dominated by A4b (6.33–9.18%), MND1 (4.94–7.39%), and Vicinamibacteraceae (7.04–7.39%). Regarding archaea, samples from the restored areas were dominated by Marine Group II (76.17–81.49%) and Candidatus Nitrososphaera (6.07–9.75%). PCoA showed that the different restoration levels were the main cause of the differences between the samples. Additionally, salinity was the dominant factor that induced this difference, but it was inhibited by the restoration and targeted enrichment of some of these functional genera. Desert restoration should therefore focus on conserving water rather than adding nutrients. Planting salt- and drought-tolerant vegetation will contribute to the initial restoration of the desert and the restoration of the microbiological content of the soil as it migrates over time, creating a cycle of elements. Quercus rehderiana Hand.-Mazz. belongs to Quercus sect. Heteroallenes' of the Fagaceae family. It is widely distributed in forests with rocky and non-rocky desertification in Guizhou Province of Southwest China. However, our knowledge of the adaptation strategies of Quercus in forests with rocky desertification is surprisingly lacking. In this study, 16 leaf traits (morphological, anatomical, and chemical) of Quercus rehderiana were investigated in 15 individuals in five 20 × 20 m quadrants of forests with rocky and non-rocky desertification. The aim was to analyze their strategies of adaptation to arid and poor-soil environments in forests with rocky desertification. The results showed that Quercus rehderiana leaves in forests with rocky desertification had a greater leaf thickness, specific leaf area, abaxial epidermis thickness, and sponge mesophyll thickness but a lower leaf area than in forests with non-rocky desertification. Quercus rehderiana leaves in forests with rocky desertification had higher calcium and magnesium concentrations and a higher N:P ratio but lower potassium and phosphorus concentrations than in forests with non-rocky desertification. The results of principal component analysis showed that forests with rocky desertification tended to show resource-conserving strategies with thicker leaf tissue and a lower nutrient concentration, while forests with non-rocky desertification tended to show resource acquisition strategies with a greater leaf area and potassium concentration. In resource-poor environments, species that adopt conservative resource strategies are more likely to survive; therefore, we forecasted that more conservative, slow-growing Quercus rehderiana will be more stable over time. The purpose of this study was to explore the inherent links between elemental cycling in Rosa roxburghii Tratt litter and soil, as well as their coupled relationships, within barren soil environments typical of karst rocky desertification regions in Guizhou Province. Ecological stoichiometric methods were used to systematically analyze the nutrient concentrations of C, N, P, and K and their stoichiometry in the litter and soil of Rosa roxburghii, with a focus on the impacts of seasonal variations and rocky desertification regions. High C and K levels and low N and P levels are observed in the litter, whereas the soil has lower concentrations of C, N, P, and K, with nutrient replenishment priorities of N > P > K > C. Strong positive correlations are found among the C/N, C/P, and N/K stoichiometric ratios in both the litter and the soil. Furthermore, nutrient concentrations and stoichiometric ratios vary significantly by season. Seasonal variations influence nutrient concentrations, with notable increases in litter P and K levels and in soil N and P levels in September compared with March. Seasonal variations influence the stoichiometric ratios of C/N, C/P, and N/K in litter and soil, contributing to elemental balance and ecosystem stability. Moreover, significant variations in nutrient contents and stoichiometric ratios are observed across distinct rocky desertification grades. Nonrocky desertified areas present elevated P and K contents in litter, whereas light desertified areas present increased C and N concentrations. Moderately desertified areas presented increased soil P and K concentrations, whereas severely desertified areas presented the highest N levels. These discernible trends in nutrient profiles highlight the synergistic impacts of soil nutrient inadequacy and plant utilization strategies. These findings contribute to a better understanding of element cycling mechanisms in Rosa roxburghii woodland ecosystems, offering valuable information for sustainable forest management practices. Land degradation, desertification and tree mortality related to global climate change have been in the spotlight of remote sensing research in recent decades since extreme climatic events could affect the composition, structure, and biogeography of forests. However, the complexity of tree mortality processes requires a holistic approach. Herein, we present the first global assessment and a historical perspective of forest tree mortality by reviewing both remote sensing and meteorological ground-based studies. We compiled 254 papers on tree mortality that make use of remotely sensed products, meteorological ground-based monitoring, and climatic drivers, focusing on their spatial and temporal patterns and the methods applied while highlighting research gaps. Our core results indicate that international publications on tree mortality are on the increase, with the main hotspots being North America (39%) and Europe (26%). Wetness indicators appear as the barometer in explaining tree mortality at a local scale, while vegetation indicators derived from multispectral optical sensors are promising for large-scale assessments. We observed that almost all of the studies we reviewed were based on less than 25 years of data and were at the local scale. Unstable airflow driven by natural wind forces inside a grass aerial seeding tower is a technical problem that needs to be improved. The authors used FLUENT 2020 R2 to simulate a basic nozzle unit, which is the fundamental component of a grass aerial seeding tower. The interior flow characteristics of the tower were first analyzed. Then, an optimization was undertaken to enhance the internal airflow's uniform stability, taking the cross-sectional inclination angle as the design parameter. The coefficient of variation, uniformity index, and velocity direction index were considered as constraints. The simulation results indicate that, subsequent to traversing the Laval nozzle unit, the grass seeds undergo a considerable acceleration. Desertification is known to be a major threat to biodiversity, yet our understanding of the consequent decline in biodiversity remains insufficient. Here, we predicted climate change-induced range shifts and genetic diversity losses in three model dung beetles: Colobopterus erraticus, Cheironitis eumenes, and Gymnopleurus mopsus, distributed across the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe, areas known for desertification. Phylogeographic analyses of mitochondrial COI sequences and species distribution modeling, based on extensive field investigations spanning 14 years, were performed. Species confined to a single biome were predicted to contract and shift their distribution in response to climate change, whereas widespread species was predicted to expand even if affected by range shifts. We indicated that all species are expected to experience significant haplotype losses, yet the presence of high singleton frequencies and low genetic divergence across geographic configurations and lineages mitigate loss of genetic diversity. Notably, Cheironitis eumenes, a desert species with low genetic diversity, appears to be the most vulnerable to climate change due to the extensive degradation in the Gobi Desert. This is the first study to predict the response of insects to desertification in the Gobi Desert. Our findings highlight that dung beetles in the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe might experience high rates of occupancy turnover and genetic loss, which could reshuffle the species composition. Reaumuria songarica, a drought‐resistant shrub, is widely distributed and plays a crucial role in the northern deserts of China. It is a key species for desert rehabilitation and afforestation efforts. Using the Maxent model to predict suitable planting areas for R. songarica is an important strategy for combating desertification. With 184 occurrence points of R. songarica and 13 environmental variables, the optimized Maxent model has identified the main limiting factors for its distribution. Distribution patterns and variation trends of R. songarica were projected for current and future climates (2030s, 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s) and different scenarios (ssp_126, ssp_370, and ssp_585). Results show that setting parameters to RM (regulation multiplier) = 4 and FC (feature combination) = LQHPT yields a model with good accuracy and high reliability. Currently, R. songarica is primarily suitable for desert control in eight provinces and autonomous regions, including Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, and Ningxia. The total suitable planting area is 148.80 × 104 km2, representing 15.45% of China's land area. Precipitation (Precipitation of the wettest month, Precipitation of the warmest quarter, and Annual precipitation) and Ultraviolet‐B seasonality are the primary environmental factors limiting the growth and distribution of R. songarica. Mean temperature of the warmest quarter is the primary factor driving changes in the distribution of suitable areas for R. songarica under future climate scenarios. In future climate scenarios, the suitable planting area of R. songarica will shrink, and the distribution center will shift towards higher latitude, potentially indicate further desertification. The area of highly suitable habitat has increased, while moderately and less suitable habitat areas have decreased. Increased precipitation within R. songarica's water tolerance range is favorable for its growth and reproduction. With changes in the suitable cultivation area for R. songarica, priority should be given to exploring and utilizing its germplasm resources. Introduction and cultivation can be conducted in expanding regions, while scientifically effective measures should be implemented to protect germplasm resources in contracting regions. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis for addressing desertification resulting from climate change and offer practical insights for the development, utilization, introduction, and cultivation of R. songarica germplasm resources. The ongoing shifts in climate, coupled with human activities, are leading to significant land desertification; thus, understanding the long-term variations in ecosystem services as well as the driving factors has a significant value for ensuring ecological security in ecologically fragile arid regions. In this study, we used the RUSLE, RWEQ, CASA, and InVEST models to evaluate five typical ecosystem services (ESs) from 1990 to 2020 in the Gonghe Basin, including soil conservation, sand fixation, carbon sequestration, water yield, and habitat quality. Then, we analyzed the trade-offs between ESs and proposed scientific indications. Finally, we identified the driving mechanisms of ES spatiotemporal variations. The results showed that (1) the ecosystem services in the Gonghe Basin have, overall, improved over the past 30 years. Soil conservation, sand fixation, carbon sequestration, and water yield showed upward trends, while habitat quality showed a downward trend. (2) The relationships between ESs in the Gonghe Basin were characterized by strong synergies and weak trade-offs, with significant spatial heterogeneity in terms of the trade-off intensity. In addition, the implementation of ecological engineering may strengthen the intensity of the trade-offs. (3) Among all the factors (temperature, precipitation, wind speed, NDVI, land use type, slope, DEM and soil type) that affected ESs, NDVI had the greatest impact, and the explanatory power was 49%, followed by soil type. The explanatory power of the interactions between each factor was higher than that of a single factor, and the interaction between NDVI and soil type had the greatest impact. ESs increased by 12% mainly due to the implementation of ecological engineering projects and natural factors. The most suitable area for ESs was the southeastern edge of the Gonghe Basin. Our study will enrich the understanding of the mechanisms of ecosystem services in drylands and provide a scientific basis for the future implementation of ecological engineering on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Desertification in semi-arid environments poses a significant risk to the archaeology within arid and semi-arid regions. Due to multiple political and physical barriers, accessing desertification-prone areas is complex, complicating pathways towards generating a hands-on understanding of the time–depth and distribution of archaeology throughout these regions. This research developed a remote sensing methodology to determine the areas of Sistan experiencing the highest levels of desertification and the threat of that desertification to known and potential archaeology. As desertification processes are occurring rapidly, this work's methodology is straightforward and efficient. In a region of vast archaeological value, desertification threatens to prevent archaeologists from potential insight and discovery. Shrubs are a key component of desert ecosystems, playing a crucial role in controlling desertification and promoting revegetation, yet their growth is often impeded by drought. Leaf hydraulic traits and economic traits are both involved in the process of water exchange for carbon dioxide. Exploring the characteristics, relationships, and anatomical basis of these two suites of traits is crucial to understanding the mechanism of desert shrubs adapting to the desert arid environment. However, the relationship between these two sets of traits currently remains ambiguous. This study explored the leaf hydraulic, economic, and anatomical traits of 19 desert shrub species. The key findings include the following: Relatively larger LT values and smaller SLA values were observed in desert shrubs, aligning with the "slow strategy" in the leaf economics spectrum. The relatively high P50leaf, low HSMleaf, negative TLPleaf, and positive HSMtlp values indicated that severe embolism occurs in the leaves during the dry season, while most species were able to maintain normal leaf expansion. This implies a "tolerance" leaf hydraulic strategy in response to arid stress. No significant relationship was observed between P50leaf and Kmax, indicating the absence of a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and embolism resistance. Certain coupling relationships were observed between leaf hydraulic traits and economic traits, both of which were closely tied to anatomical structures. Out of all of the leaf traits, LT was the central trait of the leaf traits network. The positive correlation between C content and WPleaf and HSMleaf, as well as the positive correlation between N content and HSMtlp, suggested that the cost of leaf construction was synergistic with hydraulic safety. The negative correlation between SLA, P content, GCL, and SAI suggested a functional synergistic relationship between water use efficiency and gas exchange rate. In summary, this research revealed that the coupling relationship between leaf hydraulic traits and economic traits was one of the important physiological and ecological mechanisms of desert shrubs for adapting to desert habitats. Desertification is a major challenge for the sustainable development of arid and semiarid regions worldwide. The major novelty of this study lies in assessing, for the first time, the desertification degree changes in the Algerian green barrier using remote sensing and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach from 1984 through 2020. Four widely used remote sensing indices (LSA, NDVI, TGSI, and PDSI) were used in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform as indicators of desertification in the study area. The results of the accuracy assessment of the generated desertification degree maps for 1984, 2000, and 2020 show high Kappa coefficient values exceeding 80%. Overall, the degree of desertification of the green barrier increased from 1984 to 2020. The area of medium degree has decreased from 15393.21 km2 (37.70%) to 9624.43 km2 (23.57%) between 1984 and 2020, respectively; whereas the area of high degree has increased from 23907.08 km2 (58.55%) to 30502.52 km2 (74.70%) for the same period. The combination of remote sensing and the AHP technique has proven to be effective in the spatiotemporal monitoring of the desertification degree particularly in data–scarce regions. Land degradation is one of the most serious ecological issues we face today. From the Rio+20 Summit through the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD-COP15), many countries have made significant commitments to combat desertification. For its part, India also established goals in this area. UNCCD acknowledges the intricate relationship between land degradation and its impacts on women. The convention actively promotes gender-sensitive approaches to addressing environmental issues. The main aim of this study is to assess the present condition of desertification and degradation in the Banni grasslands ecosystem located in Kutch, India. The grasslands in question have undergone a prolonged period of degradation, desertification and droughts spanning several decades. However, a limited number of academic studies have been conducted in relation to this matter. The evaluation of the consequences of Banni's degradation on the local communities, with a particular focus on women, has been motivated by Sustainable Development Goal 15 and the UNCCD. The researchers conducted an empirical study in the Banni region that integrated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, utilising structured and unstructured questionnaires as well as interviews. Background: The Minqin Oasis, which is located in Wuwei City, Gansu Province, China, faces a very serious land desertification problem, with about 94.5% of its total area desertified. Accordingly, it is crucial to implement ecological restoration policies such as cropland abandonment in this region. In abandoned croplands, abiotic factors such as soil properties may become more important than biotic factors in driving vegetation succession. However, the connections between soil properties and vegetation succession remain unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, this study investigated these connections to explore major factors that affected vegetation succession, which is meaningful to designing management measures to restore these degraded ecosystems. Methods: This study investigated seven 1–29-year-old abandoned croplands using the "space for time" method in Minqin Oasis. Vegetation succession was classified into different stages using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and two-way indicator species analysis (Twinspan). The link between soil properties and vegetation succession was analyzed using CCA. The primary factors shaping community patterns of vegetation succession were chosen by the "Forward selection" in CCA. The responses of dominant species to soil properties were analyzed using generalized additive models (GAMs). Results: Dominant species turnover occurred obviously after cropland abandonment. Vegetation succession can be classified into three stages (i.e., early, intermediate, and late successional stages) with markedly different community composition and diversity. The main drivers of vegetation succession among soil properties were soil salinity and saturated soil water content and they had led to different responses of the dominant species in early and late successional stages. During the development of vegetation succession, community composition became simpler, and species diversity decreased significantly, which was a type of regressive succession. Desertification, a formidable environmental challenge with broad implications for ecosystems and communities, is examined within Jahun Local Government Area in Jigawa State, Nigeria. This study uses a Cellular Automata Markov Chain Analysis model to visualize and predict the associated environmental risks. Objectives include assessing the extent and rate of desertification in the region and forecasting the process until 2080. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the research integrates unsupervised classification of Landsat images, Land Use Land Cover (LUCC) analysis using MODIS data, Maximum Likelihood classification, and cubic trend analysis. The outcomes yield a comprehensive understanding of desertification dynamics in Jahun Local Government Area, identifying susceptible areas for environmental degradation. The study revealed significant changes in various land cover types within the research area. Urban areas experienced a substantial annual increase of 6.3030 km2, suggesting dynamic transformations within urban landscapes, possibly driven by shifts in population density, infrastructure development, or land use patterns. Conversely, vegetation exhibited a higher rate of change, with an annual decrease of 9.3787 km2, indicating variations in vegetative cover. Waterbodies displayed minimal changes, with a slight reduction rate of 0.2723 km²/year. In contrast, bare lands demonstrated a notable increase, expanding at a rate of 15.9541 km²/year, underscoring significant alterations in these regions. The observed variations in rates of change emphasize the dynamic nature of land cover in the study region and underscore the importance of understanding these changes for effective environmental management and policymaking. The study's predictions up to 2080 offers crucial insights for stakeholders and policymakers, facilitating the formulation of proactive monitoring and management strategies to effectively combat desertification and mitigate its adverse effects on ecosystems and livelihoods. In the Sahel, land ownership is significantly influenced by the complexity of hierarchical, ethnic, and tribal aspects as well as communal, religious, and state rights. This complicates the development of large-scale ecological projects. This study investigates the positive and negative experiences that have changed the method and attitude of agencies in Mauritania to providing a holistic and ecosystemic approach to conservation and restoration. The physical environment and society's perception of applied restoration measures are of great importance for reducing environmental degradation and promoting future actions. Interviews with stakeholders helped understand the social reality and impact of restoration and management measures taken on the communities. The results of this study revealed that measures such as fencing plots, preventing the passage of livestock, and stabilizing sand dunes noticeably improved the vegetative cover of the soil in the Sahel. This improvement in vegetation cover has had direct effects on the improvement of soil quality indicators such as organic carbon content, pH, soil structure, color, and texture. Karst regions are the typical areas of interaction between human society and natural ecosystems. Understanding the historical mechanisms of the evolution of social-ecological systems (SES) is crucial for the future sustainable management of karst regions. This study selected Guangxi, a typical karst mountainous region in Southwest China, as the study area, and used population, cropland area, and forest coverage as the SES elements. Based on the framework of SES research in the karst region, it adopted segmented linear regression to identify the stages of the interactions among these elements, to reveal the evolutionary stages of social development from the long-term perspective. In addition, the driving factor indicators were constructed from the aspects of natural environment, social development, government policy, and climate change, and then the feedback changes brought about by the evolution were investigated. The results show that the evolution of SES in Guangxi from 1363–2020 can be divided into seven stages. In the first, second, and early period of the third stages, the government of Guangxi mainly focused on agricultural activities, although the only way to meet the growing demand for food was by expanding the area of cropland, and the timber trade's pursuit of economic development, resulting in an increase in rocky desertification. In the fourth stage, the ecological environment improved under the implementation of measures such as the control of rocky desertification and the compensation of forest ecological benefits. After the fifth stage, the effect of rocky desertification control has been remarkable. Although the implementation of relevant policies has alleviated the environmental problems to some extent, the continual changes in the structure and function of SES can challenge further progress towards sustainability in karst regions. Early and reliable detection of land degradation helps policymakers to take strict action in more vulnerable areas by making strong rules and regulations in order to achieve sustainable land management and conservation. The detection of land degradation is carried out to identify desertification processes using machine learning techniques in different geographical locations, which are always a challenging issue in the global field. Due to the significance of the detection of land degradation, this article provides an exhaustive review of the detection of land degradation using machine learning algorithms. Initially, the current status of land degradation in India is presented, along with a brief discussion on the overview of widely used factors, evaluation parameters, and algorithms used. Consequently, merits and demerits related to machine learning-based land degradation identification are presented. Additionally, solutions are prescribed in order to reduce existing problems in the detection of land degradation. Since one of the major objectives is to explore the future perspectives of machine learning-based land degradation detection, areas including the application of remote sensing, mapping, optimum features, and algorithms have been broadly discussed. Finally, based on a critical evaluation of existing related studies, the architecture of the machine learning-based desertification process has been proposed. This technology can fulfill the research challenges in the detection of land degradation and computation difficulties in the development of models for the detection of land degradation. Environmental rehabilitation is initiated through water and soil conservation measures to reduce desertification. The rehabilitation process provides insights for people to construct living environments and eco-friendly habitats. However, the reverse desertification process requires analytical and stable rehabilitation processes that achieve green ecosystems. This article introduces a Rehabilitation Measure Longevity Assessment Model (RMLAM) for predicting the measure's sustainability. In this assessment, the significance of water and soil and their conservation methods are analyzed for vegetation and living abilities through the ages. The positive feedback and the rehabilitation measure outputs are independently validated using intelligent fuzzy decisions. The objective is described as the living friendly environment with cultivation cultivation-facilitated ambiance. Toward this objective, the above independent features are analyzed using relationship constraints. Based on the decision outputs between distinct factor assessments, the desertification reverse process is analyzed. In this study, a comprehensive assessment of disaster hazards in Elazığ province, where the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone passes through, was conducted. Hazard maps for earthquakes, floods, landslides, rockfalls, avalanches, desertification, and erosion were integrated to create a multi-hazard map. Various methods, such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and machine learning models, including the Random Forest algorithm, were employed to assess the severity and probability of exposure for each hazard type. Independent variables, including VS30, liquefaction potential, Digital Elevation Model (DEM)-derived data, and climatic data, were selected based on relevant literature and the study area. For earthquake and erosion hazards, intuitive models were used due to the absence of a single dependent variable. The desertification map was obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change. The Random Forest model was used for other disaster hazard maps. All hazard maps were combined using a hierarchical approach with the Weighted Overlay tool. The study generated a spatial synthesis and database intended to offer proactive insights into disaster preparedness, optimizing resource allocation, and expediting recovery efforts post-disaster within the Elazığ Province. Its primary objective is to provide assistance to local authorities and emergency response teams. In the province, a significant portion of urban settlements and the majority of rural areas face high earthquake hazards. Floods pose a considerable risk, particularly in low-lying areas downstream of numerous dams scattered across the province, as well as at the confluence points of seasonal riverbeds. The hazard of landslides is high in the rugged areas along the EAF and in steep terrains eroded by rivers. Moreover, rock falls occur more frequently in mountainous areas along the Hazarbaba-Akdağ axis due to erosion and physical dissolution. Erosion and desertification represent significant slow-moving hazards, with erosion intensifying on steep slopes and barren lands, while desertification notably affects Baskil and its surrounding low-lying areas in the western part of the province. Considering multiple hazards, areas with concentrated settlements and economic activities such as Elazığ, Baskil, Kovancılar, Karakoçan, and Behrimaz plains are categorized as very high and high-risk zones.

Abstract Desertification is known to be a major threat to biodiversity, yet our understanding of the consequent decline in biodiversity remains insufficient. Here, we predicted climate change-induced range shifts and genetic diversity losses in three model dung beetles: Colobopterus erraticus, Cheironitis eumenes, and Gymnopleurus mopsus, distributed across the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe, areas known for desertification. Phylogeographic analyses of mitochondrial COI sequences and species distribution modeling, based on extensive field investigations spanning 14 years, were performed. Species confined to a single biome were predicted to contract and shift their distribution in response to climate change, whereas widespread species was predicted to expand even if affected by range shifts. We indicated that all species are expected to experience significant haplotype losses, yet the presence of high singleton frequencies and low genetic divergence across geographic configurations and lineages mitigate loss of genetic diversity. Notably, Cheironitis eumenes, a desert species with low genetic diversity, appears to be the most vulnerable to climate change due to the extensive degradation in the Gobi Desert. This is the first study to predict the response of insects to desertification in the Gobi Desert. Our findings highlight that dung beetles in the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe might experience high rates of occupancy turnover and genetic loss, which could reshuffle the species composition.
