The valuation and planning of complex projects are becoming increasingly challenging with rising market uncertainty and the deregulation of many industries, which have also raised the need for efficient risk management. We take the perspective of a private firm interested in sequential capacity expansion of a project and develop a framework for measuring the downside risk of the serial project and optimising the sequence of the stages. Under general distributional assumptions for the duration of each stage, we present an accurate representation of the project's net present value (NPV) distribution based on a Pearson curve fit, leading to closed-form expressions for the associated risk measures. We then assess the impact of duration variability on the value at risk and demonstrate its role in stochastic project scheduling. We also account for the trade-off between maximising the expected NPV and minimising the risk exposure, and obtain the optimal schedule for risk-averse decision-makers. It becomes obvious that both the duration variability of each stage and the decision-makers' risk preferences can significantly affect the optimal sequence of the stages and that high duration variability is not always undesirable, even for risk-averse decision-makers. • Introduction of flexible (or non-regular) work has a negative impact on productivity. • This negative impact is strongest under innovation regimes that rely on highly cumulative knowledge. • Supply-side deregulation of labor markets is likely to have contributed to a productivity growth slowdown in major OECD countries after 2004. Due to labor market reforms around 2003–4, Japan has a growing group of 'non-regular' workers who are easy to fire, and have poor carrier perspectives. This marks a break with the traditional Japanese model of life-time employment that allowed for intensive in-company training and commitment of personnel. Drawing from a national wage structure survey, we find indications that employment of non-regular workers has a negative impact on productivity (proxied by wages), this negative impact being largest under innovation regimes that require a high cumulativeness of knowledge. Our findings are consistent with neo-Schumpeterian research in Europe which concluded that certain labor market rigidities, while being un desirable from a neoclassical perspective, can be useful to innovation. Our paper confirms the impression from earlier research that structural reforms of labor markets along supply-side lines are likely to be one of the reasons for a substantial decline of productivity growth in major OECD countries since about 2004/05. Indonesian rural youth face challenges accessing farmland and sustaining an agricultural livelihood while their labour is not necessarily absorbed by other sectors. In that context, the Omnibus Law on Job Creation (Law 11/2020) promises to liberalise trade and investment across multiple sectors, including agriculture and food security. Combining legal research and political economy approaches to youth and agrarian challenges, we identify amendments to legislation that reduce safeguards for the environment, workers' and farmers' rights and their livelihoods. If fully implemented, the legislative amendments could further narrow youth's options both for secure formal work and futures in farming by accelerating the expansion of infrastructure, industrial plantations and extractive industries that utilise low‐wage labour and huge areas of land. This exposes inconsistencies in the government's approach to increase future food security by promoting intensification of agriculture and attracting youth to farming, while enabling agro‐ and resource extraction that absorbs land yet offers limited and precarious employment prospects. Calculations for 15 countries reveal falling unit costs of financial intermediation in most cases, especially where unit cost was high during the 1970s. This result coincides with the concomitant convergence of both unit cost and the deregulation index over the period: Countries with a high unit cost were initially more strictly regulated and subsequently deregulated more. Despite this, the international unit cost barely declined due to the decreasing weight of low unit cost countries in total financial production after the mid‐1980s. Focusing on the specific effect of deregulation, the econometric analysis displays a negative and significant link between deregulation change and unit cost variation. Further analyses reveal that the effect of a change in deregulation depends on banks' market power. Thus, the stagnating unit cost observed in the United States and the United Kingdom, the two largest providers of financial services, could be due to weaker deregulation reforms—deregulation was already high in these countries during the 1980s—and a concomitant reduction in competition. The automatic generation control (AGC) problem for deregulated power system (DPS) in interconnected multi-area multi-source configuration is of recent concern. In view of addressing this concern this paper deals with the frequency stabilization schemes and comparative performance analysis. The traditional multi-area AGC system has been extended to the restructured power system with the GENCOs, TRANCOs, and DISCOs. And different unilateral and bilateral contracts are considered for this power system using distribution participation matrix (DPM). The integral (I), genetic algorithm (GA) based integral (GA-I), hybrid fuzzy proportional-integral (HF-PI), hybrid fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (HF-PID), GA based proportional-integral (GA-PI) and GA based PID (GA-PID) control schemes are implemented for the load frequency stabilization problem. The comparative performance analysis of these controllers is carried out. For various operating situations, the AGC loop is emulated with the help of a supplementary controller and DPM. The simulation results of these control schemes are presented. The comparative performances of these control schemes are analysed for AGC system observing the mitigation of the overshoots and undershoots, settling time and steady-state errors in responses of frequency deviations and tie-line power deviations. Background: To evaluate the ability of the estimated plasma expression levels of genes of microRNA (MiR-) 146a and 155 to differentiate between samples of pregnant women suspected to be infected by T. gondii. 50 newly pregnant women who had at least one of the criteria of high risk for toxoplasma infection and 50 newly primigravida women free of these criteria gave blood samples for qualitative determination of serum toxoplasma antibodies and estimation of plasma expression levels of MiR-146a and 155 using the qRT-PCR. During the pregnancy course, the incidence of pregnancy complications was recorded. Results: Twenty-six women were IgM−/IgG−, 17 women were IgM+/IgG− and 7 women were IgM+/IgG+. Thirty-two women had pregnancy complications with significantly lower incidence in IgM−/IgG− women. Plasma expression levels of MiR-146a and 155 were significantly higher in total patients compared to control levels and were significantly higher in samples of IgM+/IgG+ patients than in other samples. Statistical analyses defined a high plasma level of MiR-155 as the highly significant predictor for oncoming pregnancy complications and high levels of both microRNAs as predictors for the presence of toxoplasmosis despite seronegativity. Kaplan-Meier regression analysis defined increasing cumulative risk of having toxoplasmosis despite seronegativity with plasma levels of MiR-146a and MiR-155 of 1.2 and 3, respectively. Conclusion: The incidence of pregnancy complications is high, irrespective of the seronegativity of women at high risk of toxoplasmosis. Estimated plasma levels of MiR-155 might identify women liable to develop complications and differentiate seronegative women vulnerable to having T. gondii infection. Trial registration: The study protocol was approved preliminarily by the Local Ethical Committee at Benha Faculty of Medicine. Before enrollment, the study protocol was discussed in detail with the study participants, and those accepted to participate in the study signed written fully informed consents. MYC has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide range of human tumors and has been described for many years as a transcription factor that regulates genes with pleiotropic functions to promote tumorigenic growth. However, despite extensive efforts to identify specific target genes of MYC that alone could be responsible for promoting tumorigenesis, the field is yet to reach a consensus whether this is the crucial function of MYC. Recent work shifts the view on MYC's function from being a gene‐specific transcription factor to an essential stress resilience factor. In highly proliferating cells, MYC preserves cell integrity by promoting DNA repair at core promoters, protecting stalled replication forks, and/or preventing transcription‐replication conflicts. Furthermore, an increasing body of evidence demonstrates that MYC not only promotes tumorigenesis by driving cell‐autonomous growth, but also enables tumors to evade the host's immune system. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of how MYC impairs antitumor immunity and why this function is evolutionarily hard‐wired to the biology of the MYC protein family. We show why the cell‐autonomous and immune evasive functions of MYC are mutually dependent and discuss ways to target MYC proteins in cancer therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's electric power network, fast changes are the norm, and auxiliary services such as automatic generation control (AGC) play a crucial role in maintaining the quality of the power supply. AGC ensures a balance between power generation, demand, and losses to sustain frequency stability and variation in tie‐line power within a set limit, even when the load changes. To accomplish this, it is always beneficial to consider new approaches to controlling the situation. This paper introduces the design of new AGC regulators that consider deviation in DC tie‐line power as an extra control variable for the turbine controller. In this study, three different deregulated power systems (containing two control areas), namely three thermal generations, the combination of one thermal and two hydro generations, and three hydro generations, including two power distribution companies (DISCOs) in each control area. These optimal AGC regulators are implemented in the proposed thermal–thermal–thermal system to carry out the various power contracts. The results have shown that the dynamic outcomes meet the AGC standards. To improve further dynamic results and the proposed systems' stability margins by incorporating redox flow batteries (RFB). In actual operating conditions, the system parameters do not remain constant due to the aging effect, assumptions made in simplifying the mathematical model, etc. Thus, ±50% deviations in the nominal value of system parameters to assess how well the optimal AGC regulators perform in the system under investigation. The suggested realistic AGC system incorporates many parameter fluctuations and works well with the optimal AGC regulators developed for the proposed plans. This study expanded to include a two‐area, thermal‐hydro‐hydro (THH) system under a deregulated framework connected via an asynchronous transmission link with or without a thyristor‐controlled phase shifter (TCPS) and RFB. The genetic algorithm (GA) can solve many issues and has global search, flexibility to varied problem types, intrinsic parallelism, and the ability to handle massive, complex search spaces. Thus, a two‐area deregulated hydro‐hydro‐hydro system with parallel tie‐lines utilizes GA‐PID, GA‐FOPID, and GA‐(1 + PI)‐FOPID controllers. Moreover, a random load disturbance (RLD) is employed in each section of the offered approach to show the resilience and elite performance of the proposed control strategy. Labor exploitation persists within global supply chains regardless of governmental legislation, private governance mechanisms, and increasing consumer demands. Notably, non‐commercial organizations have been lauded as potential facilitators of improvements in labor standards through their capability to influence supply chain actors. Through an analysis of 45 semi‐structured interviews across three cases, this research provides rich evidence of non‐commercial organizations' contribution to governance linked to the persistence of labor exploitation. The findings reveal that the constraining factors of change capabilities of non‐commercial organizations are (1) recognition of their limitations to enact improvements when their organizations are positioned in a heterogeneous supply chain context, (2) lack of a level playing field that provides a fair competitive environment to improve labor standards, and (3) labor deregulation. Similarly, the complex situation faced by non‐commercial organizations created dilemmas that hindered progress in addressing labor exploitation. Governance inertia is an overarching issue that circumscribes the ambitions of non‐commercial organizations to enhance labor standards. This article investigates if, and to what extent, banking structural reforms may affect the top income shares over time. Canada and Italy are used as case studies, as both countries undertook a major deregulation and liberalization process within their banking sector in the early 1990s. These banking policies aimed at privatizing the banking sector and reintroducing the quasi universal banking model. The evaluation of these policy packages is undertaken by implementing the Synthetic Control Method. Findings point out, overall, a robust and substantial increase of some of the top income shares in both countries, over the post-deregulation period. This work contributes by also identifying the main potential mechanisms—both direct and indirect—via which banking deregulation might have operated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After 1980, the telecom industry rapidly changed. Several new technologies were introduced, and telecom sectors in many countries opened for competition. The new technologies were available to all operators, but not all technologies assumed the same risks. Drawing upon rich archival sources from the Swedish telecom operator Televerket (after 1993, Telia), we examine the investment in and management of one new technology – ISDN. By exploring the choices and rationales for initiating and ending a technology project, we find that they may be pursued for political reasons – what we call 'investment as corporate political activity', and that many years of losses are sometimes not enough to abandon these projects. We also identify a monopolist logic in which projects can be maintained for use as bargaining chips in negotiations over deregulation or options to expand in markets after deregulation. Based on the unique setting of small and medium-sized banks (SMBs) branching deregulation in China, this paper examines the impact of SMBs branches expansion on the credit availability of enterprises by using spatial distribution of SMBs branches at firm-level. We find that SMBs branches expansion has a stronger effect on improving the credit availability of large-scale enterprises compared with SMEs, indicating that SMBs don't give play to their advantages in serving SMEs. Our study provides empirical evidence for the hypothesis of 'Comparative Advantages of SMBs' and policy implication for the reform of banking structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reflects current issues of the formation and regulation of tariffs that have developed in the modern economy. A brief analysis of the historical development of tariff regulation with the assessment of the used methods and ways is conducted. The authors identified expediency of tariff formation and regulation by a single body determining functions and set tasks. The study uses descriptive, analytical, and comparative methods. The article describes a positive example of applying the practice of deregulation with subsequent possible extension to other areas. The reasons of inefficiency of using the marginal indices mechanism are determined and justified, which is directly related to underfunding of the industry and lack of investment components. The question is raised about the fulfillment of the development, or social function by tariff regulation. It is proved that the current tariff system is not able to change the situation of increasing the investment base necessary to stabilise the deterioration of infrastructure. The main components of the current tariff regulation system are identified, and the directions of a new development model are proposed with consideration to the problems found by the study. According to the research results, conclusions are given that reflect the essence of the designated topic for possible solutions to issues existing in the functioning development model.

Abstract The study examines the payment of fossil fuel subsidies made in Nigeria on petrol, with an analysis of the laws governing its payments. It explores the reasons for the removal of the petrol subsidy and examines the merits advocated by proponents of its elimination. Additionally, it investigates the diverse pricing methods employed for petroleum products. Employing a doctrinal legal research methodology, the article relies on the existing primary and secondary sources of laws to provide insights for the reforms. The study concludes with recommendations such as the implementation of a mixed economic system, reinforcement of trade laws, consumer protection and competition laws, improvement of transparency and accountability, promotion of investments in local refineries, adoption of cleaner alternative energy sources such as renewable energy sources by adopting the global energy transition agenda, and provision of palliatives. The findings unravel the complexities surrounding petrol subsidy payments which have occasioned corruption, rent-seeking activities and insufficient utilization of clean sources of energy. A significant gap exists in Nigeria’s energy sector compared to the selected case study countries. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. The recommendations promote transparency, and accountability and will facilitate the necessary reforms for sustainable downstream petroleum industry and global energy security.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to compare the competition and productivity of the US freight rail transportation industry for the past 41 years (1980 ∼ 2020), which consists of the two periods, before and after the abolishment of the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) in 1995. Design/methodology/approach – This study investigates any relationships between the market concentration index values and labor productivity values in the separate two periods, and how the existence of a regulatory body in the freight transportation market impacted the productivity of the freight rail transportation industry by using a Cobb–Douglas production function on annual financial statement data from the US stock exchange market. Findings – This study found that, after the abolishment of the ICC: (1) the rail industry became less competitive, (2) even if the rail industry had an increasing labor productivity trend, there was a strong negative correlation between the market concentration index and labor productivity and (3) the rail industry’s total factor productivity was decreased. Originality/value – This study is to find empirical evidence of the effect of the ICC abolishment on the competition and productivity levels in the US freight rail transportation industry using a continuous data set of 41-year financial statements, which is unique compared to previous studies.

Street theater is historically a form of political performance art used to foster social change and is characterized by unscheduled performances in public spaces, interactive audience participation, and short performances often repeated in the same spot for passersby. Long used as a creative tool within social movements, street skits not only entertain but are used to educate and build awareness on pressing issues. It is an art form for the people, by the people, making theater available for all ("on the streets") rather than solely for those who can afford it. Street theater also has its uses in public health education and organizing and has been used globally as an effective method of health promotion, especially in rural and low-literacy areas. This paper looks at a street theater project that university students at Clark University in Worcester, MA participated in as part of a "Health Rights: Advocacy and Action" course. Students were tasked with developing a street theater skit that educates on a public health issue and publicly perform the skit on campus. Three skits were produced: (1) "Deadly Derailment": raised awareness on industry deregulation and the 2023 toxic chemical spill in East Palestine, OH; (2) "Harm Reduction Saves Lives": addressed humane and non-victim blaming ways to address substance use; and (3) "End the STIgma": educated on sexual health on a college campus. Teaching street theater as part of public health pedagogy is a creative approach to inspire students to use their voices and link health promotion and activism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the 1980s, most advanced economies have massively 'flexibilized' their labour markets by reducing the protection against layoffs and introducing temporary and flexible contracts. Concurrently, a well-established economic stylized fact – the stability of the wage share of income – has been challenged as empirical evidence reveals a substantial decline in labour share across numerous countries. In this study, we aim to empirically investigate the causal link between these two phenomena by examining the impact of changes in the regulation of fixed-term contracts, as measured by variation over time in the temporary contracts EPL index, on the functional distribution of income. We employ Jordà's local projection method for a panel of 18 advanced countries over the period 1985–2019 and show that reforms that deregulate fixed-term contracts consistently reduce the wage share. • The wage share has declined in many countries in recent decades. • The study investigates the impact of fixed-term contract protection reforms on functional income distribution. • Local projections are applied to EPL variations for a sample of 18 advanced economies over the period 1985–2019. • A nonlinear analysis is conducted to explore the effects of flexibilization and tightening reforms. • The results indicate that deregulating fixed-term contracts leads to a significant reduction in the wage share. Exaggerated clot induces venous thrombosis (VTE); oxidative stress (OxS) can to be postulated as additional risk factor. This study evaluates firstly OxS by measuring surrogate biomarkers (malondialdehyde-MDA, 4-hydroxinonenal-4-HNE, superoxide desmutase enzyme (SOD)), secondly the iron (Fe) plasma level and thirdly the hepcidin protein (Hep) level in patients with VTE. A case control study was performed enrolling twenty hospitalized patients and an equal number of healthy individuals. In VTE patients, the following results were found. The MDA was 8.38 ± 0.5 µM/L, the 4-HNE measured 2.75 ± 0.03 µM/L and the SOD was 0.025 ± 0.01 U/mL. The I was 73.10 ± 10 µg/dL and the He was 4.77 ± 0.52 ng/mL. In the control group, the MDA measured 5.5 ± 0.6 µM/L, the 4-HNE 2.24 ± 0.021 µM/L and the SOD 0.08 ± 0.12 U/mL. The Hep was 2.1 ± 0.55 ng/mL and the Fe was 88.2 ± 9.19 µg/dL. Differences were statistically significant. Results suggest that in VTE there is activated OxS, Fe deregulation and over-production of Hep. Fe deregulation induces OxS, leading both to inflammation in the clot activator and stimulation of the pro-thrombotic status. We use recently developed difference-in-differences methodologies and a panel of US states over the period 1960–2015 to examine how bank branching deregulation impacted state-level income inequality. Existing research relying on traditional two-way fixed effects estimates and event studies provide mixed results. However, these results potentially suffer from biases due to treatment effect heterogeneity and the failure to account for multiple related treatments. Using bias-corrected difference-in-differences procedures and properly accounting for the timing of treatment, we find evidence that the combined effect of intrastate and interstate banking deregulation increased the income share of the top 10%, 5%, and 1% of income earners, respectively. Conversely, we find no evidence that intrastate branching deregulation in isolation impacted income inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I adopt the theoretical lens of authoritarian neoliberalism coupled with the concept of performativity to analyse post-transition Tunisian counterterror politics. In doing so, I argue that "securing the state" from discursively constructed "threats" such as terrorism, political Islamism and the associated instability they are perceived to engender can be understood as a performative enactment of statehood in the context of reduced sovereignty associated with neoliberal deregulation, as well as a crisis of legitimacy faced by successive post-transition governments in Tunisia. However, performative counterterror discourses and practices are aimed not only at "flexing the muscles" of the state. They also seek to construct moral panic surrounding certain groups and thus justify the roll out of repressive policing of already marginalised communities rather than merely suspected terrorists. This performance is intended to distract from some of the root causes of radicalisation in contemporary Tunisia: economic inequalities and dispossession linked to failed neoliberal deregulation. Thus, through the exploration of the Tunisian case between 2014 and 2021, I contend we can best understand (in)security in the MENA when adopting an analytical approach bringing together security studies and International Political Economy (IPE). Background: Myotonic Dystrophy type I (DM1) is the most common muscular dystrophy in adults. Previous reports have highlighted that neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) deteriorate in skeletal muscle from DM1 patients and mouse models thereof. However, the underlying pathomechanisms and their contribution to muscle dysfunction remain unknown. Methods: We compared changes in NMJs and activity-dependent signalling pathways in HSALR and Mbnl1ΔE3/ΔE3 mice, two established mouse models of DM1. Results: Muscle from DM1 mouse models showed major deregulation of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases II (CaMKIIs), which are key activity sensors regulating synaptic gene expression and acetylcholine receptor (AChR) recycling at the NMJ. Both mouse models exhibited increased fragmentation of the endplate, which preceded muscle degeneration. Endplate fragmentation was not accompanied by changes in AChR turnover at the NMJ. However, the expression of synaptic genes was up-regulated in mutant innervated muscle, together with an abnormal accumulation of histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4), a known target of CaMKII. Interestingly, denervation-induced increase in synaptic gene expression and AChR turnover was hampered in DM1 muscle. Importantly, CaMKIIβ/βM overexpression normalized endplate fragmentation and synaptic gene expression in innervated Mbnl1ΔE3/ΔE3 muscle, but it did not restore denervation-induced synaptic gene up-regulation. Conclusions: Our results indicate that CaMKIIβ-dependent and -independent mechanisms perturb synaptic gene regulation and muscle response to denervation in DM1 mouse models. Since 2013, Permitted Development Rights (PDR) in England have allowed commercial-to-residential conversions in locations once deemed suitable only for non-residential land-use. This deregulation of planning control has been justified as a way of encouraging more home-building in areas experiencing 'housing crisis', but its overall consequences remain unclear. This paper hence compiles quantitative evidence on a city-wide scale on the price, size, build and location of these conversions in London 2013–2021. It finds that homes produced through this route are generally smaller than the London average and are over-concentrated in neighbourhoods with fewer accessible green spaces and higher-than-average levels of air pollution. Here, larger conversion schemes (of more than 10 units) appear particularly problematic, potentially subjecting residents to forms of 'slow violence' that could have long-term consequences for their physical and mental health. The paper also finds that, on average, PDR conversions are marginally more affordable than other new developments in the capital, but are also more expensive per square metre, suggesting deregulation is allowing developers to 'extract' maximum value from these schemes rather than providing affordable homes per se. The implications of this are discussed in relation to the politics of housing in London and the wider forms of planning deregulation allowing developers to accrue increased profits from housing in an era of intense financialisation. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in pregnant women is associated with a wide spectrum of adverse consequences for both mother and fetus. The high mortality in this population appears to be associated with hormonal changes and consequent immunological changes. This study conducted an analysis of immune responses in pregnant women infected with HEV manifesting varying severity. Data mining analysis of the GSE79197 was utilized to examine differentially biological functions in pregnant women with HEV infection (P‐HEV) versus without HEV infection (P‐nHEV), P‐HEV progressing to ALF (P‐ALF) versus P‐HEV, and P‐HEV versus non‐pregnant women with HEV infection (nP‐HEV). We found cellular response to interleukin and immune response‐regulating signalings were activated in P‐HEV compared with P‐nHEV. However, there was a significant decrease of immune responses, such as T cell activation, leukocyte cell‐cell adhesion, regulation of lymphocyte activation, and immune response‐regulating signaling pathway in P‐ALF patient than P‐HEV patient. Compared with nP‐HEV, MHC protein complex binding function was inhibited in P‐HEV. Further microRNA enrichment analysis showed that MAPK and T cell receptor signaling pathways were inhibited in P‐HEV compared with nP‐HEV. In summary, immune responses were activated during HEV infection while being suppressed when developing ALF during pregnancy, heightening the importance of immune mediation in the pathogenesis of severe outcome in HEV infected pregnant women. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to assess the current legal framework on money laundering control in the insurance sector. Essentially, this examination is premised on the interrogation of whether it is still appropriate for Mauritius to apply such stringent, opaque and unyielding Anti-Money Laundering/Combating Financing of Terrorism norms and rules on general insurance when developed nations such as the UK and Singapore have done away with them for a more effective combat against money laundering. It would also be assessed why the financial services commission (FSC) is not able to draw inspiration from its British and Singaporean counterparts in fighting money laundering more effectively. Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses the doctrinal legal research methodology which is colloquially described as "black-letter law" approach. It is backed up by a contextual legal analysis that is based on an analysis of relevant legal provisions. It relies ground experience from the insurance industry through the experience of the authors. A comparative approach is used with Singapore and the UK as case studies given that there are significant commonalities to the Mauritian jurisdiction as well as useful differences. Findings: It is observed that a move towards a de-regulation of the legal framework on money laundering in the insurance sector with a more relaxed approach is more effective for the Mauritian insurance sector. Evidence is drawn from the Singaporean and British models. A re-structuring of the FSC of Mauritius is also warranted for such an approach to be adopted. Originality/value: This paper is among the first academic contribution that proposes a de-regulation and the adoption of a relaxed approach of and by the Mauritian Insurance Industry for a more effective combat against money laundering. The study examines the payment of fossil fuel subsidies made in Nigeria on petrol, with an analysis of the laws governing its payments. It explores the reasons for the removal of the petrol subsidy and examines the merits advocated by proponents of its elimination. Additionally, it investigates the diverse pricing methods employed for petroleum products. Employing a doctrinal legal research methodology, the article relies on the existing primary and secondary sources of laws to provide insights for the reforms. The study concludes with recommendations such as the implementation of a mixed economic system, reinforcement of trade laws, consumer protection and competition laws, improvement of transparency and accountability, promotion of investments in local refineries, adoption of cleaner alternative energy sources such as renewable energy sources by adopting the global energy transition agenda, and provision of palliatives. The findings unravel the complexities surrounding petrol subsidy payments which have occasioned corruption, rent-seeking activities and insufficient utilization of clean sources of energy. A significant gap exists in Nigeria's energy sector compared to the selected case study countries. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. The recommendations promote transparency, and accountability and will facilitate the necessary reforms for sustainable downstream petroleum industry and global energy security. This study aimed to determine the efficiency and productivity of the production factors in the case of public transport in Sfax – the second most important agglomeration in Tunisia–. The analysis of factor productivity enabled identifying the shortcomings in the supply of this service and advocating certain strategies to boost supply. We use an estimation of the trans-logarithmic costs function with different restrictions while relying on the foundations of the microeconomic theory. We relied on annual statistical data from the Regional Transport Company in Sfax over the period preceding the COVID 19 crisis spanning from 1985 to 2018. The estimation results showed the presence of scale diseconomies, the gain in productivity over the years is too slow. The technical progress of public transport in Sfax is very low and the technical efficiency is also very limited. The results revealed that there is a decline in productivity growth due to a growing inefficiency throughout the study period. The underutilization of production capacities in the transport sector was judged as a consequence of excess of capacity and lack of efficiency attributed mainly to the lack of competition. The study identified some external factors that have an impact on the measured efficiency but are outside the company control. Public authorities should act on these factors to help companies improve their performance. We extend the political economy analysis of reforms proposed by Abiad and Mody (Am Econ Rev 95(1):66–88, 2005) to the energy sector, then the 'crises' and 'learning' hypotheses are modified, and the roles of economic openness and capital markets are emphasised. Given the hypotheses, a conceptual framework of energy deregulations is proposed. Furthermore, we employ 46 countries panel dataset to conduct the empirical analysis. We find that energy sector deregulations are a dynamic learning process; specifically, the U-shaped nexus between the previous experience of deregulations and the current change of deregulations is confirmed. The systemic banking crises and the sovereign debt crises are the drivers of deregulations in the electricity sector and gas sector, respectively, while the currency crises, economic recession, and inflation reverse it. For political variables, we find the parliamentary government significantly matters with the reforms, while other variables will drag the deregulations or shape the deregulations insignificantly. The economic openness and capital market development are identified as the prominent-driven factors of energy reforms. The baseline results are stable through a series of robustness checks. We develop a simple two-sector neoclassical growth model in which the upstream sector produces intermediate goods, and the downstream sector produces final goods with outputs from the upstream. While the downstream sector features perfect competition, firms in the upstream sector engage in Cournot competition and charge a markup. We show that the deregulation and the introduction of competition in the upstream goods sector not only increases the productivity in the sector but also has a substantial spillover effect on the productivity of the downstream sector and factor prices. We calibrate the model to the Chinese economy and use the calibrated model to quantitatively evaluate the extent to which the deregulation in the upstream market in China from 1998 to 2006 can account for the rapid economic growth and the high and rising returns to capital in China over the same period. Our quantitative experiments show that the deregulation in the upstream sector can account for a significant share of economic growth in China during the study period. This paper presents an innovative approach for automatic generation control for power system under a deregulated setting. The main objective of this work is to optimally tune the parameters of the fractional-order controller using the newly developed Aquila Optimizer (AO) to enhance system performance. A test system comprising a thermal power plant, a hydroelectric system, a gas turbine-based power plant, and wind energy sources is examined under deregulated environment. The study emphasizes the minimization of frequency variations, tie line deviations, and area control errors during diverse operational shifts. The proposed control strategy explores the response of generators in a hybrid deregulated power system, emphasizing the critical role of properly tuned Fractional Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (FOPID) controllers in ensuring system stability. The potential and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) based controller performance for the same test system. The objective function for optimization is set as the minimization of the integral time and absolute error (ITAE) performance index. Furthermore, the efficacy of the proposed technique is compared with the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) and its superiority is validated. Performance evaluation of the hybrid power system is conducted under Poolco agreement, bilateral agreement, and varying operating conditions. Comparative assessments reveal the superiority of the AO-driven FOPID over other techniques, demonstrating improved system metrics, including frequencies across different areas, tie-line power variations, and generator outputs.

This paper investigates the automatic generation control in a deregulated environment for three unequal interconnected power systems involving renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. In each area, there are reheat thermal plants combined with various renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaic plant, wind turbine plant, hydropower plant, biodiesel engine generators, biogas turbine generators, and electric vehicles. Non-linearities, such as generation rate constraints and governor dead bands, are taken into consideration. This paper proposes a new cascade controller called the two degree of freedom Tilt integral Derivative with Filter cascaded with Fractional order Tilt Integral controller using a new Zebra optimization algorithm to optimize controller parameters. Several case studies are done to illustrate the robustness of the proposed controller and optimization. It has been observed that the deviation in frequency’s settling time, peak overshoots, and undershoots are better with including EV by 55%,71.4% and 44.4% in Area1, 55.6%, 62.5% and 14.2% in Area 2, 30.3% and 46.15% in Area 3 than the system without EV.

The Perception of Anomie Scale (PAS) is a measure used to evaluate the state of society and whether it is disintegrated and deregulated. Although widely used, the psychometric properties of reliability, validity, and measurement invariance according to sex have not been studied in the Chilean university population. To explore these properties, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 383 students from public (45.7%) and private (54.3%) universities, with a mean age of 21.5 years (SD = 3.3). A CFA and ESEM were performed, which confirmed the two-factor correlated structure, achieving better goodness-of-fit indices by eliminating five items (RMSEA = 0.09; CFI = 0.98; TLI = 0.95). This also provided evidence of reliability and measurement invariance according to sex. This study provides evidence of the psychometric quality of the PAS scale, thus allowing its use in the Chilean university context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
