It is important to understand how individuals in affluent societies reason around their own actions in relation to climate change. However, much of the research has focused on sceptics and those who have little interest in change. Studying those who want to contribute to a transition and why they fail is also of interest. This study is qualitative and deals with the internal reasoning of a self-selected sample of Swedes with sustainable values who argue in relation to a failed intention. Ca 400 responses were analysed. We used topos theory to identify thinking structures that guide the arguments used to deal with the cognitive dissonance that acting against knowledge and intention results in. The most common ways to argue were to imagine a climate account with possible deposits and withdrawals, or a budget which you strive to keep. Also common was to compare with something or someone that was "worse". Redirecting responsibility was also an argument, albeit complicating the issue of responsibility. The limits of reality were used as an excuse for action, whereas articulating the goal conflicts of a less emitting life made choices visible. Finally, the human condition of not always meeting your own standards was mentioned. These arguments only partly overlap common discourses of delay in the public sphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The slow rate of adoption of savings and transaction accounts opened under financial inclusion programmes is a challenge for policymakers across the globe. We use the experience of a large-scale financial inclusion programme in India—Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)—to model the adoption of simple banking products, namely deposit, withdrawal, fund transfer and ATM usage. Based on account-level transaction data, we create a dataset to capture the adoption of each product over time. We use this data to estimate three growth models: Bass, Gompertz and logistic. The Bass model which is based on diffusion of innovations theory is found to be the best fit across products. The role of social influence in the diffusion of the four products studied is found to be much lower when compared to other products in subsistence marketplaces. Social network effect is comparatively stronger in the adoption of fund transfer and ATM. We discuss the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and contend that information transfer by word of mouth and network effects are the most probable reasons for the observed adoption behaviour. Savings are one of the highly important components that may be used to create capital and invest to increase production, employment, income, and other socio-economic factors that contribute to the development of a nation. However, domestic savings are also thought to be crucial for covering unforeseen expenses for individuals, families, and businesses. The portion of current income that is deposited in a bank account or other financial institution for possible future use rather than being used for immediate consumption is known as savings. Within the context of the economic field, savings are a crucial macroeconomic indicator that must be examined at both the individual and household levels. In an emerging market like India, the majority of people are engaged in the unorganized sector, where low and uncertain wages are considered the main features of this sector, and the result is that MPC is greater than MPS. Elevated rates of inflation and consumption also have the negative effect of reducing savings and capital formation. This paper aims to examine the socioeconomic limitations that Delhi residents experienced during the inflationary period. In order to investigate the impact of factors like family size and income, a questionnaire was created. 50 respondents were included in the sample. Strata produced by fluvial dunes can provide insight into the hydrological regime of ancient rivers. Recent experiments indicate that conditions of disequilibrium between bedforms and formative flows may be inferred from the coefficient of variation of preserved dune cross‐set thickness, suggesting that this quantity may act as a proxy for the flashiness of river floods relative to the time required for full bedform translation. To assess whether this idea is applicable to interpretations of the stratigraphic record, this study examines published data relating to more than 2600 cross‐sets from 53 sedimentary units of 19 river systems. The presented analyses must not be over‐interpreted, because the considered rivers span different environmental settings, the data sources are heterogeneous in terms of type and dimensionality, and some variables were established by applying empirical relationships. Yet, significant findings are revealed. Larger rivers exhibit discharge and bedform characteristics that are more conducive to disequilibrium; however, a modest increase in the coefficient of variation of cross‐set thickness, CV(Dst), as opposed to the expected decrease, is seen as a function of river size. Crucially, smaller CV(Dst) values are not systematically associated with conditions that should favour dune disequilibrium. Meanwhile, only ca 25% of the studied examples demonstrate cross‐set thickness statistics compatible with quantitative formulations of the autogenic control by variable dune topography – the notion of 'variability‐dominated' preservation. These findings indicate that the variability in cross‐set thickness may be a poor predictor of discharge variability, perhaps because of the multiplicity of factors controlling dune preservation, such as bedform hierarchy, transport stage and depth‐dependent variations in dune disequilibrium. To improve interpretations of cross‐stratified deposits, further research is needed: (i) to establish the value of process‐to‐product models for reverse product‐to‐process interpretations; and (ii) to define representative samples for preserved dune deposits accounting for temporal and spatial variability in preservation potential. Black shale-hosted vanadium (V) deposits account for about 80% vanadium resources in the world, but only <2% vanadium in the black shale can be extracted mainly due to insufficient recognition on the occurrence mode of vanadium. It is commonly agreed that most vanadium in the black shale is hosted in clay minerals and organic matters, but it is not clear how the other parts of vanadium exist and whether there exists a vanadium mineral, which has limited our understanding of metallogenic mechanism of black shale-hosted vanadium deposits. The Jiujiang Basin at the Lower Yangtze Block is a significant black shale-hosted vanadium metallogenic district. In this work, we conducted systematic studies of mineralogy, lithology and geochemistry on the occurrence of vanadium hosted in the black shales. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that the main vanadium-hosting mineral in the black shale is mannardite, with a structural formula of B a 0.96 ⋅ H 2 O T i 5.87 V 1.87 3 + V 0.11 4 + S i 0.07 C r 0.07 F e 0.02 3 + O 16.00 , space group I41/a, unit-cell parameters a = b = 14.346(7) Å, c = 5.899(1) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, Z = 4. Data from EPMA, TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer (TIMA), and whole-rock geochemistry indicate that 12.32–44.06% (average 24.95%) vanadium exists in mannardite. Most vanadium atoms in mannardite occupy its structural sites as trivalent vanadium (V3+), forming chemical bonds with O atoms as V O 2 − , whereas a minor amount of vanadium atoms replace titanite atoms (Ti4+) as quadrivalent vanadium (V4+) by isomorphism. Mannardite precipitates under a strong reductive condition with sufficient trivalent vanadium species, titanium and biogenic barium (bio-barite). Our first identification of mannardite in black shale-hosted vanadium deposits thus sheds light on the occurrence mode of vanadium and the metallogenic mechanism of black shale-hosted vanadium deposits. We study the short term effects of an experiment which transitioned conditional cash transfer beneficiaries from receiving benefits in cash at temporary payment modules to receiving benefits through account deposits on women's status, work and financial inclusion. The experiment was implemented in the context of the Mexican Prospera program in 150 communities in the state of Hidalgo. This research examines the applications of the Prophetic tradition (Sunnah) in financial transactions and aims to analyze and evaluate the implementation of the Prophetic tradition in financial transactions by studying the Prophetic evidence and its legal interpretations, elucidating how Muslims should conduct themselves responsibly and correctly in the field of financial and economic matters in accordance with the Prophetic tradition. The significance of this research lies in providing a legal guideline for Islamic financial institutions and individuals to execute their transactions in a manner that aligns with the Prophetic tradition. Utilizing a descriptive and analytical approach grounded in Prophetic Hadiths, recognized Islamic texts, and jurisprudential sources, a diverse range of financial transactions were studied. The results indicate that financial exchange between banks can be permissible if conducted without interest and adhering to Shariah regulations. The Mudarabah contract is also considered permissible and feasible in financial transactions, provided it complies with Shariah regulations. However, trading in commercial papers involving interest is considered impermissible. In addition, bank deposits and current accounts are considered Shariah-compliant when adhering to Shariah regulations. Covered documentary credits are considered permissible, contingent on adherence to appropriate Shariah conditions. Furthermore, the Salam contract is emphasized as a legitimate means of financing seasonal agricultural production. Lastly, it is stressed that penalty clauses in non-debt financial contracts are permissible for compensating damages, provided they are not tied to usurious interest. These findings provide valuable insights into how financial and banking transactions can be organized in accordance with the Prophetic tradition and Islamic values, contributing to enhancing compliance with Shariah regulations in the financial and banking sector and promoting trust and transparency in this context. Three‐dimensional reflection seismic data from the Neves‐Corvo area, southern Portugal, were reprocessed with the main objective of improving the seismic signature of the Lombador and Semblana volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. The sensitivity for choosing adequate parameters for targeted imaging, even during the pre‐processing stage, such as common‐depth point binning size, was studied in detail before the main processing work began helping to optimize bin size parameters; preliminary stacking results from this analysis presented severe acquisition footprint, and seismic targets were not clearly identifiable. Processing results using pre‐stack dip move‐out and post‐stack migration methods show strong moderate to steeply dipping reflections. Several of the observed reflections can be correlated with known lithological contacts, some of which are interpreted to originate from the Semblana and Lombador deposits. Despite the mixed signal‐to‐noise ratio, the seismic cube reveals both shallow and deep three‐dimensional structures, allowing to account for the deposits' lateral extension beyond the capabilities of two‐dimensional seismic imaging alone. Given the data processing approach taken it was possible to distinguish strong diffraction patterns, interpreted as originating from faults and edges of the Lombador deposit, illustrating the usefulness of diffraction patterns for better interpretation of geological features in hard‐rock environments. We estimate the effect of financial inclusion on transition probabilities into/out of poverty. By exploiting a longitudinal sample of Italian households between 2002 and 2016, we find that financial inclusion is effective in both reducing the likelihood of entering poverty and helping the poor to climb out of it. According to our estimates, access to deposit accounts reduces the risk of falling below the poverty line by 2.7 percentage points (pp) and increases the chance of exiting poverty by 4.4 pp. Significance and magnitude of such effects are confirmed when considering different poverty thresholds and definitions, alternative proxies for financial inclusion as well as alternative empirical strategies. In the past decade, Southeast Asia has seen the development of financial inclusion, as evidenced by the growth of the penetration, availability, and usage dimensions of financial inclusion. This study analyses the impact financial inclusion has on economic growth, represented by GDP per capita growth, and unemployment using data from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The authors employed panel data regression with fixed effect and random effect models to analyse the data. The results show that the number of commercial bank branches and outstanding loans statistically significantly affect GDP per capita growth, while the number of saving/deposit accounts does not. Orogenic gold deposits account for more than 30 % of the global gold resources. To understand the genesis of orogenic gold deposits and ultimately target new orogenic gold deposits, it is important to determine the origin of gold. However, there has been a continuing debate surrounding gold source reservoirs. The Jiaodong gold province, comprising ore hosted within Mesozoic granitoids that intruded Archean metamorphic rocks, together with other gold occurrences in the North China block, collectively constitute the only Mesozoic world-class gold resource in a Precambrian basement. This geological setting, with young deposits in ancient rocks, offers a great opportunity to better determine the gold source because it allows us to fingerprint the isotopically distinct reservoirs. Specifically, it is possible to determine whether the mass-independent isotopic fractionation sulfur (MIF-S)-bearing Archean supracrustal rocks that form the lower crust are a permissive source. We present multiple sulfur isotope (δ34S and Δ33S) measurements of pyrite grains (n = 161) from 18 gold deposits in the six main districts of the Mesozoic Jiaodong gold province. Gold-associated pyrite grains yield non-MIF-S signatures (Δ33S = 0 ‰), indicating that Archean metasedimentary rocks are not a source reservoir of sulfur and gold. The isotopically heavy S (average δ34S = +9.0 ± 3.7 ‰, 2SD) demonstrates a sulfur contribution from a subducted oceanic slab and, in particular, its overlying sediments while excluding mantle and magmatic sources. The subduction-related metamorphism released appreciable gold and sulfur from the top of the downgoing slab into aqueous-carbonic fluids that ascended into the upper plate along crustal structures traversing a tectonically thinned crust. Here, we demonstrate that these giant Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits sourced gold and sulfur during subduction-related devolatilization reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bayan Obo deposit is the largest REE resource in the world. Although many isotopic dating methods have been applied, ages based on petrography and closure temperatures still lack discussion. In this study, three digital petrographic images were created based on full-scanning microscopy, BSE, and TESCAN integrated mineral analysis (TIMA), providing a more scientific method for analyzing the mineral types, distributions, and content of the Bayan Obo deposit. By combining the full-scan images, monazites were selected in thin sections and dated in situ. The monazite in the body ores sample yields three 207Pb intercept ages of 657 ± 25 Ma (MSWD = 1.06), 763 ± 16 Ma (MSWD = 1.3), and 689 ± 22 Ma (MSWD = 8.1), and the monazite in one section yields maximum and minimum ages of 1393 ± 142 Ma and 429 ± 24 Ma, respectively. Combined with previous studies, the earliest and major stages of carbonatites, REE, and dikes in the Bayan Obo deposit area were dated at ~1.4 Ga and ~1.3 Ga, respectively. Due to the multiple subduction and accretion events related to the Paleo-Asian Ocean and North China Craton, the Bayan Obo deposit is intensely overprinted, with a tectonic-thermal event recorded at ~1.0–0.2 Ga. The multiple or protracted isotopic ~1.4–0.4 Ga ages in the Bayan Obo deposit account for five reasons. First, the separate thermal events and the partial recrystallization of monazite. Second, the diffusion of daughter products from the host mineral over time. Third, differences in the closure temperatures of different minerals and isotopic chronologies. Four, resetting of the closure system due to high temperature and hydrothermal alteration. Five, the minerals and transformed ores that formed in the Paleozoic. This paper examines how referendums on internationally contested issues can activate nationalist discourses. To this end, it carries out a case study of the 'Icesave conflict' between Iceland, the UK and the Netherlands. This conflict centered on whether the Icelandic government should insure British and Dutch deposits in the online accounts of the Icelandic bank Landsbanki, which went bankrupt in the Global Financial Crisis. Departing from a discursive institutionalist framework, the paper performs a detailed analysis of the conflict over time, including two Icelandic referendums on repayment plans. It argues that although calling a referendum likely gave Iceland more bargaining power, doing so also activated novel nationalist discourses. A main contribution of the paper thus lies in illustrating how international pressures can 'reverberate' in the domestic realm. Another key contribution is the dynamic analysis of a case that spanned several years, allowing for a time-sensitive understanding of evolving political developments and discourses. With no significant topographic expression and limited bedrock exposure, the ~10 km diameter Karla impact structure (Tatarstan, Russia) is poorly known. The age of the impact is also poorly constrained stratigraphically to between 4 and 60 Ma, even if an upper Miocene age is more likely. Targeted gravity and magnetic field surveys were conducted over Karla to explore its size and structure in 2019. Bouguer gravity anomaly data reveal a central positive (+2 mGal) peak ~2 km in diameter surrounded by a concentric negative (−1 mGal) anomaly extending to ~3 km radius; a more irregular, outward‐decreasing (+1 to −1 mGal) positive anomaly extends to 6–8 km radius. A complex impact structure with diameter of 8–10 km is consistent with the Bouguer anomalies. Magnetic field data show 1 to several km‐wavelength anomalies with amplitude variation from +150 to −150 nT and little concentric structure, although the impact feature broadly corresponds to a magnetic low with a weak central high. A 2‐D numerical model of the structure was built using these potential‐field data and petrophysical properties measured on collected samples. It confirms a central uplift composed of Paleozoic sediments and Archean crystalline basement up to 1 km of depth. A 500 m deep collapsed disruption cavity filled by breccia and lacustrine deposits accounts for the Bouguer negative ring. The reversely polarized and weak central magnetic anomalies are controlled by the geometry of the crystalline basement associated with the deformation during the central uplift. This paper studies the adoption and impact of prize-linked savings (PLS) accounts, which offer lottery-like payouts to individual account holders in lieu of interest. Using microlevel data from a bank in South Africa, we show that PLS is attractive to a broad group of individuals, with financially constrained individuals and those with no other deposit accounts particularly likely to participate. Individuals who choose to use PLS increase their total savings on average by 1% of annual income. Exploiting the random assignment of prizes, we present causal evidence that PLS substitutes for lottery gambling but is a complement to standard savings.
