Quality protein maize (QPM) has high contents of the essential amino acids lysine and tryptophan. The substitution of standard maize (SM) with QPM in feeds can be profitable due to improved livestock performance and decreased use of costly dietary lysine supplementation and protein ingredients. Herein, effects of QPM adapted to temperate climate on broiler performance were tested. A feeding experiment was performed on control (fed with SM) and treatment (fed with QPM) broilers. Each feeding trial of 42 days' duration was carried out in three phases-starter (1-14), grower (15-35) and finisher (36-42). Diets for each growth phase were formulated based on the biochemical analysis of maize kernels. At the end of each growth phase, feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. In the first experiment, SM was completely replaced with QPM in treatment group diets. The results indicated better FCR in the treatment group for grower (1.51:1.56) and finisher (1.56:1.61) phases. In the second experiment, QPM content was increased and the soybean component decreased by 3%. This time, FCR improvement was even better but in all three phases-1.16:1.33 for starters, 1.28:1.36 for growers and 1.30:1.46 for finishers. These results indicate a significant financial reduction in the cost of feed as the price of soybean is usually two to four times higher than the price of maize. Overall, it can be concluded that using adapted QPM in broiler diets can be profitable for both feed industry and broiler producers.

In this paper, the grain and structural parts of the grain of maize hybrid ZP 677 were studied, using Infrared Spectroscopy - Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR). The ATR spectra of grain, endosperm, pericarp and germ of maize hybrid are characterized by a number of bands, band intensity, band kinetics and band location distribution in the wavelength range 400 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1. These parameters were specifically tested for both, the grain and the endosperm, pericarp and germ. Spectral bands that are very high and high intensity usually range from 3 to 5, characterized by different intensity, kinetic forms, as well as by the distribution of origin in the wavelength range. These spectral bands enable the identification of the following organic compounds: proteins, carotenoids, ethers, cellulose, lipids, carboxylic acids, amino acids, protein amides, alkanes, sugars, carbohydrates, ketones, alcohols, phenols, aldehydes and amines. Spectral bands of grains, endosperm, pericarp and germs that are low and very low intensity are also characterized by the number of bands, low bandwidth, distribution of the place of origin, and especially by the oscillation frequency of valence bonds of functional groups of organic molecules. Spectral bands that are low and very low intensity enable the identification of organic molecules, compounds and their fragments, as well as the identification of various forms of excited states of molecular structures and excited states of valence bonds of organic molecules. The excited state of molecular structures and the excited state of valence bonds of functional groups of organic molecules are manifested in various forms of oscillatory motion. Examples of functional groups of organic molecules in which all the mentioned excited states of molecular structures and excited states of valence bonds occur are alcohols, amines, alkynes, ketones, alkenes, ester, lipids, carbonyl group (ester), amides, nitrogen-hydrogen group, (NH), primary amines, carboxylic acids, amides, acid chlorides, nitrites, amides, carbonyl group (amide), aliphatic carbon-hydrogen bond and aldehydes.

The aim of this study was to assess variations in aggressiveness and trichothecene production of F. graminearum isolates originating from maize, wheat and barley in Serbia. Analyzing F. graminearum isolates (98) obtained from various agroecological conditions of Serbia over the period from 1993 to 2010, using the HPLC method, the following two chemotypes were observed: 3-acetyl-deoxinivalenol (3ADON) and 15-acetyl-deoxinivalenol (15ADON). A great diversity in the production of deoxinivalenol (DON) derivatives was observed. A majority of F. graminearum isolates, regardless of their origin (maize, wheat or barley) belonged to the 15ADON chemotype. The 3ADON chemotype was also detected, but in a significantly smaller number (13/98) samples, compared to the 15ADON chemotype (85/98). None of the tested isolates belonged to the NIV chemotype. The examined isolates showed different pathogenicity on barley leaf, wheat class and maize ears. The average pathogenicity of the tested isolates was the highest on barley leaf. It was observed that isolates originating from wheat had the highest average daily increase in mycelium growth rate (27.37 mm). Statistical analysis of the obtained results for mycotoxins synthesis showed that there was a highly significant statistical correlation between the production potentials of total DON, 3ADON and 15ADON in F. graminearum isolates belonging to various chemotypes. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between the aggressiveness of isolates and the production of total DON in isolates belonging to 3ADON and 15ADON chemotypes.

Five maize hybrids were used in this research: two yellow and one white dent, sweet hybrid, and yellow popcorn. Five brine recipes with acetic acid were examined, of which two with the addition of potassium sorbate. The brines with preservatives were stable for 16 months without colour changes of the liquid and corn cobs. The pH of brines ranged from 3.39 to 3.89. Canned hybrids ZP 366 and ZP 611k in brine without sugar, and with the addition of potassium sorbate and potassium metabisulfite marked as Number 5, showed the best sensory characteristics. The protein content determined in ZP 366 (9.56 %) and ZP 611k (10.23 %) did not vary significantly compared to whole-grain maize flour, while crude fibre content (7.67 and 6.88 %), and ash content (21.96 and 20.72 %) were significantly higher than in flour (crude fibre: 2.40; 2.64 %, ash:1.35; 1.48 %, respectively). This research will be continued in order to implement preliminary findings and new data on this subject.

- Abstract
With global climate change, including unpredictable geographic and temporal weather patterns causing significant Genotype × Environment interaction (GEI), modelling by climate variables can reveal their influence on phenophases of maize (Zea mays L.) development. The objectives of this study were dissection of the phenotypic variation of grain yield of late maturity maize hybrids grown in multi-environment trial, and quantification of the influence of climatic factors on the GEI for each vegetative and reproductive phenophase. Eight FAO 700 maize hybrids were evaluated across five locations in Serbia during 2020 and 2021 years. The hierarchy of sources of variation according to three-way ANOVA were: Year (Y) > Location (L) > Location×Genotype (G) > L×Y×G > G > L×Y > Y×G. The average maximum temperature (mxt, 22.1%), average minimum temperature (mnt, 19.2%), average mean temperature (mt, 18.2%) and relative humidity (rh, 15.1%) in April significantly influenced emergence stage. The mxt (21.1%) and mt (15.7%) in May influenced significantly vegetative phases V1-V9. June contributed the largest percentage of the sum of squares of the GEI with mxt (25.2%), mnt (20.9%), mt (16.1%) influencing vegetative phases V10-V18 and tassel emergence. In July mxt (17%), mt (15.6%), precipitation sum (15.2%), and sunshine hours sum (15.1%), influenced R1, R2, R3, and R4 reproductive phases. In August mxt (23.2%), mnt (20.8%), mt (15.7%), rh (17.1%) influenced R5 reproductive phase. The extreme heat as a stressor had a more critical role for late maturity maize hybrids production than drought in crucial phenophases of maize development.

- Abstract
The study was carried out at the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje”, Belgrade, Serbia during 2021 growing season in three location. Six inbred lines were crossed according to complete diallel method. In this way 15 hybrids and 15 reciprocal combinations were obtained. Hybrid and reciprocal combinations derived from these parental components were used in this paper. The present study was carried out to study the variability, broad-sense heritability (H2 bs), genetic advance (GA), correlation among traits, genotypic and phenotypic path analysis among grain yield and its components. The results indicated that the genotypes were significantly different for all traits. For all traits, the phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation. The highest heritability was found in 1000 kernel weight, followed by grain yield, ear diameter and anthesis-silking interval (ASI). In our study Genetic Advance over Mean (GAM) for the traits ranged from lowest value (9.739%) for cob diameter to the highest value (90.579%) for anthesis-silking interval. According to results of path analysis, the trait 1000 kernel weight with the value of 0.365 has the strongest direct positive effect on grain yield. Positive direct effects on grain yield were also observed for ear length (0.202), ear diameter (0.248) and number of rows per ear (0.076), while negative direct effects were observed for cob diameter (-0.057). The trait 1000 kernel weight had the highest indirect positive effects on grain yield via ear diameter (0.232). The cob diameter had highest negative indirect effect on grain yield via ear diameter (-0.048). Coefficient of multiple determinations (R2 ) had a value of 0.428. This indicated the important role of additive gene effect in the inheritance of these traits and could be improved through simple selection.

The contemporary trends in maize breeding are directed at identification of genotypes with improved grain quality for human consumption, industrial processing, and their incorporation into breeding programmes. In this study, three maize hybrids and three open-pollinated varieties (OPVs), differing in grain colour and type, were used to examine the differences in the total carotenoid content, the phenolic compounds profile and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). In addition, physical parameters, basic chemical composition, as well as the content of protein fractions in grain, were analysed. The multivariate approach through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) application contributed to better understanding of the complexity of the interdependence for maize grain quality parameters tested. From the aspect of different end use, better technological quality desirable for dry milling and snack food processing found in OPVs Osmak and Bosanac, as well as high content of bioactive compounds (i.e. TAC) exhibited by OPV Rumenka, make these genotypes superior compared to hybrids' varieties evaluated.

The nature, role, and significance of low intensity spectral bands contained within the infrared spectra of kernels of high-yielding maize hybrids: ZP 341, ZP 434, and ZP 505 were observed in this study. The observations were performed to identify organic molecules and their structural properties. The occurrence of unstable state of organic compounds and their functional groups are conditioned by such a process. The set hypothesis holds that there is a necessity to study the existence of many and low intensity spectral bands, not observed so far, occurring in different patterns (low intensity bands, single or grouped). They should be observed and the dynamics of their formation, caused by their different movements, including the possibility of their cancellation or amplification, should be explained. Such spectral bands most often appear in the wave number range of 400-950 cm-1. They occur in several wave numbers up to 3,000 cm-1 and are caused by different types of vibration movements (valence and deformation vibrations) of organic compounds and their functional groups: primary, secondary, and tertiary amides, proteins, free amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, cellulose, carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, ethers, and alcohols. An unbiased analysis of low intensity spectral bands of maize hybrid kernels reveals that their occurrence is similar. Small differences, for some cases of the occurrence of low intensity spectral bands, can barely be ascertained. In this way, it is possible to establish not only the chemical composition of organic compounds of kernels of observed maize hybrids, but also it is possible to indicate their unstable, conformational, and functional properties.

- Abstract
Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are known regulators of various processes in plants, including growth, development and stress responses. They achieve this through mRNA cleavage or translational inhibition, in a process called RNA interference. Herein, their role in chilling stress response in young maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) is examined, using high-throughput sequencing methods. Bringing light to all aspects of chilling stress response in maize is necessary since earlier sowing, during colder periods, is one of the most promising strategies of avoiding maize yield loss due to effects of climate change in these areas. Sterilized seeds of two maize genotypes (tolerant - T and sensitive - S to low temperatures) were germinated in the dark for five days (optimal conditions), after which the 5-d old seedlings were exposed to chilling conditions for 6h (10° C). Samples for RNA isolation and cDNA library preparation were taken after the treatment ended, and single-end 50 bp sequencing was performed (Illumina® Novaseq 6000). The miRNAs were then filtered, mapped, identified and quantified using adequate bioinformatics tools; and the differential expression analysis was carried out using the DEGseq R package. The analysis was performed on 859 miRNAs, after previously executed TPM normalization using the MA-plot-based method with random sampling model (MARS). The threshold for significantly differential expression was set as the Bayesian adjusted p-value, or q-value < 0.01 and log2 fold change > 1. A total of 612 were expressed differentially, but only 55 miRNAs were common for both genotypes and at the same time differentially expressed between control and treatment conditions – 40 novel and 15 known. Half of the common miRNAs showed the same expression patterns in both genotypes, while the other half did not. Among them, seven known miRNAs showed opposing expression patterns between the genotypes (zma-miR167b-3p zma-miR167e-3p, zma-miR159c-5p, zma-miR164g-3p, zma-miR166a-5p, zma-miR

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal crop of the world and plays a key role in worldwide agriculture with highest production and productivity. Maize is also an important grain crop grown in Serbia, used as a component of feed. Many studies have been conducted on correlations, heritability and path analysis on grain yield. The results have been widely used in maize breeding programs. The present research was carried out at the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje” in Serbia during the 2021 growing season effects of grain yield and quantitative traits of maize. Six inbred lines were crossed according to complete diallel method. In this way fifteen hybrids and fifteen reciprocal combinations were obtained. - Abstract
Maize breeding program at the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje" begun during the fifties of the last century and it was based on the principles of inbreeding hybridization. During the sixties, first maize hybrids were registered and each subsequent decade a new generation of hybrids was created. So far, more than 800 maize hybrids have been registered in Serbia and more than 170 hybrids abroad. Testing program includes field evaluations of experimental hybrids in a large number of locations in Serbia, paying attention to the correct choice of environments. Each season 5000-7000 new hybrid combinations have been tested in Serbia. Additionally, the most promising hybrids of different maturity groups are being tested at more than 20 locations abroad, with the aim of selecting the best hybrids for each foreign market. In order to accelerate breeding procedure, service of winter generation in Chile is used, with the aim of obtaining two generations during one calendar year. Since 2014, the application of double haploid technology in maize breeding has started. So far, 13000 double haploid lines have been created from 350 original populations. Optimization of each step in the methodology towards the higher efficiency is the main task for breeders: higher induction rate, higher duplication rate, better agronomic traits of inducers. This year the first hybrid containing a double haploid line has been registered. In addition, several hybrids developed using this method are in registration procedure. Application of molecular markers represents an essential part of modern breeding programs. Use of SNP markers became a routine tool in breeding program of Maize Research Institute. In the last few years, 400 most elite ZP maize inbred lines were characterized using this type of markers. In addition to the creation of hybrids with standard grain quality, breeding program of specific maize hybrids exists and it includes breeding for hybrids with white endosperm, sweet maize an

- Abstract
Hibridi srednje grupe zrenja FAO 500 imaju sve veći značaj u proizvodnji kukuruza u Srbiji. Taking into account that in the last few years there has been a trend of growing hybrids with lower harvest moisture, the hybrids of the FAO 500 maturity group represent an excellent combination of high yield and lower grain moisture content in harvest. They can be harvested both in ear and grain, which makes them a very good alternative for hybrids of late maturity groups that are characterized by high yield potential but also high moisture content at harvest. Hybrid ZP 5557 was registered in 2023. It was tested in the trials of the State Variety Commission in the period 2021-2022 years. It is characteristic that both years were unfavorable for growing maize, which especially applies to the year 2022. Hybrid ZP 5557 achieved a higher average yield in both years of testing compared to the average of check hybrids, with lower moisture content and a lower percentage of broken and lodged plants. In the two-year average, it achieved a yield of 104.4% compared to the average of check hybrids. Based on the results achieved in the tests of the variety commission, hybrid ZP 5557 will be included in the post-official trials of the Maize Research Institute and in case it obtain good result, the commercialization of this hybrid will be started.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Quality protein maize (QPM) can be beneficial for use in feeds as it was shown that substitution of standard maize (SM) with QPM can improve livestock performance and decrease costly dietary lysine supplementation and protein ingredients. Herein, nutritional and financial effects of QPM adapted to temperate climate in broiler diets were tested. Feeding experiment was performed on two groups of broilers – control (fed with SM) and treatment (fed with QPM). Duration of each feeding trial was 42 days, comprising three phases - starter (1-14), grower (15-35) and finisher (36-42). Diets for all growth phases were formulated based on the biochemical analysis of SM and QPM kernels. Body weight of the chickens was measured on days 1, 7, 14, 35 and 42. Feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated at the end of each phase. Two trials were performed. In the first, SM was completely replaced with QPM in treatment group diets. As the results indicated better FCR in the treatment group for grower (1.49:1.54) and finisher (1.55:1.60) phases, in the second trial QPM was increased and soybean component decreased by 3%. That led to better results as FCR was even lower but in all three phases, confirming the results of the first trial and further confirming the effects of QPM on feed conversion. Moreover, significant financial reduction in feed was observed, as the price of soybean is usually two to four times higher than the price of maize.

This paper discusses the application of the infrared (IR) spectroscopy method to grain of prestigious maize inbred lines to determine its conformational and functional properties. The IR spectra of prestigious maize inbred lines grain has been registered in: ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms. The existence of spectral bands varying in both, number and intensity and their shape, frequency and kinetics has been determined. Infrared spectral bands are determined by transmittance (%) and frequency (cm-1) of chemical bonds' valence oscillations and deformation oscillations in functional groups: alkanes, alkenes, alcines, alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids, esters, aldehydes and ketones that are characteristic for biogenic compounds of carbohydrates, vitamins, pigments and dietary fibres. By analyzing IR spectral bands, conformational and functional properties of bio-genic compounds can be detected in grain of observed prestigious maize inbred lines.

It is generally known that a phenotype is formed on the basis of the capacity of its genotype affected by environmental factors. Yield stability is statistically expressed through the GxE interaction. The interaction is a part of the trial variation that includes the factor of the genotype and the factor of the environment. The presence of the qualitative interaction significantly makes difficult the selection of the best genotypes in the process of breeding. As long ago as the early 1960s, many researchers noticed that the application of linear regression could, in many cases, define adaptability and stability of a genotype. However, in cases when data are not well adjusted to the linear model, better results can be gained by the application of the multivariate models (PCA, AMMI, GGE). The estimated maize hybrid stability was compared in this study by linear (Finlay and Wilkinson and Eberhart and Russell models) and multivariate statistical models (AMMI model). Very similar results were obtained by all three models. It was probably due to one dominant factor in the hybrid x environment interaction (different precipitation sums for the environments and the length of the growing season for hybrids). The advantage was given to the AMMI model, as the model with one axis analyses the interaction equally well as linear models, while the model with two axes extracted another part of systemic variation of the interaction effect not adjusted to the linear model.

The information on inter-relations of breeding material and genetic distinctness of available germplasm is important for deciding on the usage mode in breeding programmes. For the given research, phenotype description according to principles of UPOV descriptors was taken from 28 maize lines that are parental components of 20 ZP maize hybrids of known pedigree, from one year and two repetitions. Cluster analysis was conducted in order to establish whether the phenotype characterization of genotypes can be used for defining homogenous groups by relatedness, and to what extent the results are in accordance with the known information on the examined material's pedigree. The cluster analysis, Ward method, based on Squared Euclidian Distance, provided the best concordance with the information on the pedigree of the examined maize lines, so those results are presented in this paper and used for correspondence analysis.

- Abstract
ZPQPM13 is a maize hybrid with improved protein quality, adapted to temperate climate growth conditions, developed by crossing a QPM version of ZPL5 commercial line (developed by marker assisted selection) and GS-6 (a QPM line with 50% tropical and 50% temperate germplasm). This hybrid has grain yield as commercial hybrids, over 90% of hard endosperm, contents of tryptophan and protein over 0.075% and 10%, respectively, and stability of tryptophan content over different locations and years. ZPQPM13 was tested for use in broiler feeds, with the aim to reduce utilization of costly synthetic lysine or soybean components. The feeding experiment on Ross 308 broilers was divided into two groups – control (fed with standard maize) and treatment (fed with QPM). In treatment group diets, ZPQPM13 was increased and soybean component decreased for 3%. Chemical analyses revealed higher contents of limiting essential amino acids in mercantile ZPQPM13 compared to standard maize – 0.44 vs. 0.25 % lysine, 0.077 vs. 0.070 % tryptophan and 0.39 vs. 0.27 % threonine. Duration of each feeding trial was 42 days, comprising three phases - starter (1-14 days), grower (15-35 days) and finisher (36-42 days). Feed intake (FI), body mass gain (BMG), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated at the end of each phase. In treatment group, FI was reduced, while BMG and ADG were higher in starter phase but lower in grower and finisher phases. FCR was lower in all three phases in treatment group – 1.13 vs. 1.30, 1.25 vs. 1.33 and 1.28 vs. 1.45. Although a small drawback is that final weight was 3.4 % higher in control broilers, comparison of feed and meat prices show that financial benefits of using QPM are still significant compared to using standard maize in feeds, as soybean is four times more expensive than maize.

- Abstract
Maize hybrids are created by crossing inbreds of opposite heterotic groups, where the discovery of genetic distances (GD) is of great significance. With the presence of modern breeding tools for discovering heterotic pairs and GDs in used material an efficiency in breeding can be increased for more precisely planned field work. For this study 11 crosses were made in order to compare the prediction of data obtained by GDs between crossed inbreds with the results of same hybrids from field testing. Crosses were done in 2020 according to the GD suggestions which ranged from 0.386 to 0.465 to check out is it possible to predict specific superior hybrid performance before the field results itself. 25k SNP Ilumina Infinium Array for maize was used to determine GD values. As a check ZP 457-market accepted hybrid (registered in 2018 in Republic of Serbia) was used together with 10 other hybrids. All 11 hybrids shared the same female component (Lancaster Sure Crop heterotic group), while male components from opposite heterotic groups (BSSS and Iowa dent) were used. GD values of used males ranged from 0.190 to 0.412 clearly stating one broad heterotic group. The most famous heterotic pair B-73 x Mo-17 as well as two Institute’s top selling hybrids (ZP 434 and ZP 606) were also included for GD comparison with test hybrids with the GD values of 0.488, 0.466 and 0.462 respectively. Review of B-73 x Mo-17 through ZP 434 and ZP 606 to the newly created hybrids suggests GD values are decreasing with every new cycle of selection between crossed material. Results from field testing compared to GD values show somewhat positive correlation as for ZP 3 exp which ranked 2nd highest GD value and 3rd rank in grain yield outyielding ZP 457 significantly, but ZP 457 GD value of 0.458 (ranking third in GD) suggests higher yielder should be though to find. Grain yield results proved same hybrid ZP 457 to be one of the lowest yielders being superior only to ZP 4123 despite high GD value. In top

- Abstract
Maize breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje” was conducted for more than 75 years resulting in the creations of numerous maize hybrids with superior traits and performance. The source breeding material used in the breeding programs was very diverse and varied from the domestic landraces to the introduced inbred lines. This resulted in a very diverse and complex structure of the breeding pools used in commercial maize breeding in “Zemun Polje” Institute. As genetic material in this study, 24 maize inbred lines of different origin, heterotic and maturity goups were selected were selected from the 3rd and 4th cycle of breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje”. These are inbreds that were commonly used in breeding programs during the 1980s and were parental components of most important commercial maize hybrids. The genotyping was performed using a Maize 25k Infinium array. The neighbor-joining cladogram, PcoA and Structure were used to analyze the genetic structure and diversity of the panel. Population structure analysis of the panel initially showed a clear divide between Lancaster and Non-Lancaster inbred lines, revealing the dominant heterotic pattern in the breeding program. Further analysis with an increased number of population (k) showed a more complex structure of the non-Lancaster group of inbred lines with best number of ancestral population being k=5. The average genetic distance in the panel was 0,385, ranging from 0,039 to 0,544, with paternal inbreds in most of commercial hybrids being the most distant ones. The genotyping results of the Zemun Polje maize panel were further merged with DROPS European panel of 247 dent maize inbred lines in order to view the results of the diversity analysis of the Zemun Polje panel from a broader perspective.

- Abstract
Small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) have an important role in regulating plant gene expression, both in developmental processes and stress responses, through RNA interference or silencing. sRNAs respond to environmental stressors in manners dependant on the type of stress, tissue and genetic background. Herein, their role in chilling stress response is examined in young maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) of two inbred lines of contrasting chilling tolerance, using high-throughput sequencing methods. Understanding this response is critical since one of the most promising strategies of avoiding maize yield loss due to climate change is earlier sowing, during periods of suboptimal temperatures. Sterilized seeds of the two lines, marked as LT (tolerant), and LS (sensitive), were germinated in the dark for five days (optimal conditions), after which the 5-d old seedlings were exposed to chilling conditions for 24h (temperature: 10/8 °C; photoperiod: 12/12h). Samples for RNA isolation were taken after 6h and 24h of treatment. After the cDNA library preparations were finished, single-end 50 bp sequencing was performed (Illumina® Novaseq 6000). sRNAseq analysis was performed using a custom pipeline that included quality control, mapping, known miRNA alignment and novel miRNA prediction and quantification. This is an ongoing research and a selection of results will be presented. On average 81% of sRNA reads were succesfully mapped and belong to the class of microRNAs (miRNAs). Some of the sRNAs appear to be differentialy regulated depending on the genotype and the chilling conditions, but more research is needed to verify their potential role in this process.

- Abstract
Maize (Zea mays L.) is the third most grown cereal crop in the world, after wheat and rice. Immature dehusked maize ears harvested before fertilization, within 2-4 days after white silk emergence are classified as baby corn. The objective of this study was to investigate the suitability of baby corn cobs obtained from different maize hybrids for their enrichment with anthocyanins extracted from the black soybean seed coats. Three different maize hybrids, namely, a popcorn hybrid ZP 6119k, a sweet hybrid ZP 553su, a semi-flint with a short vegetation period (105 days) ZP 161, as well as black soybean genotype “Black Tokyo”, were used in this study. Plant material was grown in the experimental field of the Maize Research Institute at the location of Zemun Polje, Serbia in 2021. Maize was harvested after the emergence of silk from the ears (silking stage), while soybean plants were harvested in the stage of full maturity (R8). The baby maize cobs differed in length (9.5-20.0 cm) and girth (12-21 mm), the number of kernel rows (12-20), color, and length of the silk outside the husk (3-7 cm). Soybean seeds were manually dehulled and seed coat was ground in a laboratory mill prior to the extraction of anthocyanins. After dehusking and measuring, the baby corn cobs were washed and blanched for two minutes in boiling water, and then cooled. Subsequently, the baby corn cobs were immersed in a marinating brine enriched with anthocyanins extracted from the seed coat of black soybean, pasteurized, and kept in closed glass jars in a cool dry place for 30 days. After chemical and sensory analyzes, the product obtained from popcorn hybrid ZP 6119k was chosen as the most suitable for the preparation of the marinated baby corn product enriched with anthocyanins from black soybean

- Abstract
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are endogenous, single-stranded, covalently closed RNA molecules, generated by back-splicing events. Their role as regulators of different processes in animal cells has been widely studied and proven, however functional studies on circRNAs in plants are still few and far between. Here we attempt to bring light to their role in abiotic stress response – particularly chilling stress, in young maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) using high-throughput sequencing methods. One of the strategies of avoiding yield loss is earlier maize sowing as to escape exposure to extremely high temperatures and drought in the summer. This means submitting maize plants to suboptimal temperatures during earlier developmental stages. Two maize inbred lines of contrasting tolerance to chilling were selected and marked as LT (tolerant), and LS (sensitive). Sterilized seeds of the two lines were germinated for five days, in the dark, in optimal conditions and after the germination period was finished, the 5-d old seedlings were exposed to chilling conditions for 24h (temperature: 10/8° C; photoperiod: 12/12h). Sampling was done after 6h and 24h of treatment. After total RNA isolation and purification, quality check, and cDNA library preparations were finished, paired-end 150 sequencing was performed (Illumina® Novaseq 6000). Custom pipeline was used for circRNAseq data analysis and included their identification and quantification (CIRCexplorer2, v2.0.5), differential expression analysis (edgeR Bioconductor v4.1) and functional enrichment (GO, KEGG, psRobot). Processing of this data is still underway, and by now several thousand circRNA molecules and over a thousand 5' and 3' alternative back-splicing sites have been identified. Significant number of those circRNA have shown expression dependent on chilling, as well as genotype, but further studies are necessary to confirm their role in this process, find their target molecules and unravel regulatory networks they create wit

- Abstract
One of the strategies for overcoming global climate change threatening to decrease maize yield is early sowing. To contribute to the development of cold-tolerant hybrids this research focused on the genetic background's comparative analysis in maize inbreds with good combining ability. Leaf whole-transcriptome sequencing of 46 maize genotypes revealed 77 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between Lancaster and other heterotic groups (i.e. BSSS, Iowa dent, Ohio), referred to as non-Lancaster group, under optimal growing conditions. Cold test of the subset of four Lancaster and four non-Lancaster lines showed that the former were cold sensitive and the latter cold tolerant. Cold-induced expression analysis of seven DEGs in eight lines revealed different expression regulation dependent on the duration of cold exposure and genetic background for six out of seven analysed genes-chloroplast ATP-sulphurylase, photosystem II cytochrome b559 alpha subunit, CIPK serine-threonine protein kinase 15, glutamyl-tRNA reductase, photosystem II reaction centre protein I and Calvin cycle CP12-chloroplastic-like encoding genes. The results imply that differently regulated basic processes between Lancaster and non-Lancaster maize group involve, at least, photosynthesis and sulphate assimilation, contributing to their different cold response and different adaptation to low temperatures.

Although the reveal of heterotic groups in maize significantly increased testing efficiency, field trials are still unreplaceable and most time and fund consumable in the process of the hybrid development. The efficiency of breeding programmes could be significantly increased if the hybrid performance could be predicted prior to the field evaluation. Although different marker techniques have been developed and included into current breeding programmes, the satisfactory results have not been obtained yet. The present study is an attempt to inexpensively and rapidly discover indicators that could even partially facilitate the selection of parental pairs in the process of the hybrid development prior to the field evaluation. The phenotypic description of inbred lines according to the UPOV Descriptor was used for the estimation of the phenotypic distances for which it had been assumed that they could, to a certain degree, be an indicator of heterosis. The phenotypic characterization according to the UPOV Descriptor was done for 28 elite inbreds, that are often used in our commercial breeding programmes, and for 24 inbreds originating from the same source, as well as, for an inbred of the unknown origin and their phenotypic distances were estimated. The cluster analysis resulted in the classification that was in high compliance with known information on the origin. It was empirically concluded that great distances of parent inbreds result in good hybrids. Furthermore, high values among certain inbreds belonging to the same heterotic groups are observed on the morphological distance matrix and crosses among them should indeed be tested in the field prior to making any general conclusion on the reliability of the morphological distance in the prediction of heterosis.

The protection of breeders rights provides the chance to establish the exclusive right which will enhance the chances for protection of intellectual property and therefore provide the greater accumulation of the necessary founds for the further investments in the area of plant breeding. Concerning this UPOV has established detail guidelines for conduction of DUS tests for more then 170 plant species. Considering that the living systems are in the constant interaction with the environment, and most of the traits are polygenic, mistakes are always possible, regardless of the very precisely established procedures for description of traits in the Guidelines. On the other hand the subjectivity of the human factor is always present. Errors could be the result of the mistakes in writing during the estimation in the field or while transferring the data into the computer. Also errors could occur as the replacement of the estimates between two neighboring plots. Specificity of genotype and missing estimate could also enter confusion in the evaluation of traits. Application of some cultural practices, especially herbicides applied after seedling emergences, could lead to the false estimate. Assuring the timely detection of the false estimate and its verifying and correction, during the experiment, is of a great importance, so that errors could be avoided in characterization of genotype and in the estimate of its distinctness, uniformity and stability.

With global climate change including unpredictable geographic and temporal weather patterns that lead to significant genotype × environment interaction (GEI) the maize performance assessment would need to be complemented with stability analysis. The objectives of this study were: i) estimation of parametric and non-parametric stability indices for grain yield of late maturity maize hybrids, ii) assessing correlations and grouping of stability indices for grain yield of late maturity maize hybrids. The eight maize hybrids of FAO 700 maturity group (ZP1-ZP7, and check Ch) were evaluated for grain yield in the multi-environment trial including five locations in Serbia during 2020. and 2021. year. Stability analyses included twenty parametric and non-parametric indices, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pearson's correlations between stability indices. The sum of ranks for tested late maturity maize hybrids were in the interval from 37 (ZP6) to 146 (ZP4). The average rank was in the range from 1.8 (ZP6) to 7.3 (ZP4). The interval of variation for standard deviation of average ranks for tested maize hybrids was from 1.3 (ZP4, Ch) to 2 (ZP2) indicating satisfying accordance of utilized parametric and non-parametric stability measures. The highest average grain yield across all tested environments was observed for ZP1, which was second most stable hybrid. The most stable late maturity maize hybrid tested over ten environments was proven to be ZP6 with sum of ranks and average rank of 37 and 1.8, respectively, with standard deviation of average rank 1.5. PCA biplot showed two groups of parametric and non-parametric stability estimates: I group-coefficient of variation (CVi), Eberhart and Russel's regression coefficient (Bi), Perkins and Jinks's regression coefficient (Bi), GEI variance component (θ(i)), coefficient of determination (R²i); II group-Eberhart and Russel's deviation from regression, Wricke's ecovalence Shukla's stability variance Perkins and Jink's deviation from regressionδ²i, superiority measure (Pi) the mean of the absolute rank differences of a genotype over all tested environments the variance among the genotype ranks over all tested environments (Si(1), the sum of the absolute deviations for each genotype relative to the mean of ranks, the sum of squares of rank for each genotype relative to the mean of ranks -S(6)i,NPi(1)NPi(2), NPi(3), NPi(4), Thennarasu non-parametric stability estimates, mean variance component (θi), Kang's rank-sum (KRi). Five maize inbred lines, ZPNP11, Sg1533, ZPLP2/1, ZPK18 and ZPK6, were used for this study. The dilled cross with n(n-l)/2 combinations was performed and 10 Fl hybrids were analyzed in parallel trials in two locations (Zemun Polje and Indjija). The two factorial analysis of variance and covariance, model II, was used for data processing and therefore separation of variance components (genetic, ecological, phenotypic) and the estimation of coefficients of genetic and phenotypic correlations among studied traits (popping volume, grain yield, number of kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per row, number of kernels per 10 grams, kernel depth). The coefficients of variation and heritability were also computed. Beside the degree of compatibility between the two traits (correlation coefficient), the path analysis (Wright, 1934) provided a more detailed consideration of the relation.: among observed traits. The estimation of standardized regression coefficients (path coefficients) was done by the method of inversion correlation symmetrical matrixes (Edwards. 1979) Popping volume, as the most important trait in popcorn breeding is used as a dependent variable (v). The results obtained by the path analysis point to the complexity of relations between popping volume, as a dependent variable, and independent variables, as well as to the character of relations among independent variables. Path analysis is a form of the regression analysis providing comprehension of the direct and indirect effects, as well as the share of joint effects (determination) of independent variables (x1, x2, ... xn) on the dependent variable (y). The purpose of this study was to determine and evaluate effects of grain yield and grain yield components on popping volume. It was assumed that some of the selected traits, as independent variables, significantly affected grain yield as the dependent variable. The highest correlation dependence (genetic and phenotypic) was detected between popping volume and the number of kernel per row(rg=0.82**, rf=0.75**). The direct genetic effects (path coefficients) were higher and more significant than phenotypic ones. The highest direct genotypic effect on popping volume was detected for the number of kernel per row (Pyg3 = 1.04**) and number of kernel row per ear (Pyg4=1.00**). Negative direct genetic effect was found for grain yield (Pyg1=-1.33**) and number of kernels per 10 grams Pyg4 = -0.48**. The coefficients of determination, especially genetic one were not high (Rg2 = 0.31, Rf2 = 0.73) which indicate that studied traits do not determine popping volume at a great extent, so selection of genotypes with high popping volume could be done regardless grain yield and grain yield components. Direct phenotypic effects were lower and not significant. .

This research will be continued in order to implement preliminary findings and new data on this subject

Introduction/purpose: This paper presents the results of several different research studies. The inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are primarily intended for human and livestock nutrition. Their selection took about four decades. Methods: Spectral bands were registered using the method of resonant Raman spectroscopy of the leaves of inbred maize lines. These spectral bands indicate the conformational characteristics of not only carotenoid molecules but also other compounds (phosphate, gluten, and amide III) in the leaf. Results: A systematic examination of the inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and their maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 was performed in this paper. It was stated that the new inbred lines of corn, i.e. ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159, are rich in carotenoids and yellow pigments. These lines also have significant quantities of other valuable bioactive compounds and good physical characteristics. The lines have an upright position of the top leaves and belong to the group of maize lines with significant characteristics of the photosynthetic model. They are resistant to high temperatures and are drought tolerant. Conclusion: This paper presents the relevant properties, characteristics and parameters of the new studied inbred maize lines that can be used in selection processes in the future. High-yielding and high-quality maize hybrids, i.e. ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737, have been created from the mentioned inbred maize lines. They are recognizable by their qualities. The hybrid ZP633 is especially noteworthy for human consumption (children and the elderly). Further, from the agronomic-veterinary point of view, it is confirmed that the hybrids ZP 735 and ZP 737 are the most suitable for livestock feeding with the programmed use of corn silage. The relevant agronomic, morphological and nutritional properties of the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are also presented in this paper. The results regarding the grain structure and yield height for grain and silage for the hybrids ZP 677 and ZP 684, produced in Serbia and the countries of Southeastern Europe, are also given.

Finding new ways of improving crop quality, yield potential and abiotic stress tolerance are some of the most important pursuits in crop production today. As one of the biggest causes of yield and productivity reduction is climate change, specifically increasing temperatures and drought during the summer, a large number of strategies is focussed on lessening their negative effects. Cropping pattern changes include earlier sowing (early spring), when the temperatures are lower, as one of the most promising escape strategies for avoiding high summer temperatures. Thus, development of cold tolerant maize lines became an important goal. Comparative analysis of 46 maize inbred lines belonging to two different genetic backgrounds, one predominantly cold tolerante (marked as Non-Lancaster) and the other predominantly cold sensitive (marked as Lancaster) in the field, was done by whole transriptome sequencing and differential gene expression (DGE) analysis. Plants were grown under optimal, greenhouse conditions and sampled after completing the V4 growth stage. Total RNA isolated from leaves of three plants per inbred line was used for cDNA library preparation by Illumina TruSeq Stranded RNA LT kit. Pair-end sequencing was performed on MiSeq Illumina sequencer using MiSeq Reagent kit, v2 (2 x 150bp). Data manipulation and analysis was performed using a custom-made bioinformatics pipeline that included high throughput sequence data quality control (using FastQC), removal of low quality reads (using Trimmomatic tool, version 0.32), transcriptome assembly and mapping (using Cufflinks, version 2.2.1), expression quantification (using CuffDiff) and DGE analysis (using BLAST2GO and GO analysis Toolkit and Database for Agricultural Community, agriGO v2). DGE analysis revealed 77 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the Lancaster and the Non-Lancaster group, 21 of which were statistically supported for differential expression between the two groups and annotated as involved in abiotic stress responses in maize and other plant species. To test DEGs response to cold stress expression of a subset of seven DEGs in eight inbred lines (4 belonging to Lancaster and 4 belonging to Non-Lancaster genetic background) was analyzed under 24h long exposure to low temperatures (6/4° C, 12h photoperiod), with sampling being done 6h and 24h after beginning of the treatment, as well as after 48h of recovery. Six DEGs showed different expression regulation dependent on cold exposure duration and genetic background. These findings imply differently regulated processes between the analysed Lancaster and Non-Lancaster inbred lines, contributing to their different cold response and adaptation, and will be further used for the development of cold tolerant hybrids.

- Abstract
Improving yield potential, crop quality and abiotic stress tolerance have always been some of the most important requirements for successful crop production. Poor environmental conditions arising as repercussions of climate change, like the drastically higher temperatures and drought during the summer, have become a significant cause of productivity and yield loss. Therefore, many strategies are focused on minimizing their negative effects, like changing the cropping patterns, including earlier sowing (early spring). Maize is especially sensitive to extreme heat occurring during the flowering and grain filling stages in summer, and earlier sowing enables avoiding this. However, it also means exposure to suboptimal temperatures and chilling stress during earlier developmental stages, leading to a demand for the development of maize lines tolerant to low temperatures during those stages. In this study, 46 maize lines used in breeding programmes were grouped as Lancaster and group consisting of different heterotic groups like BSSS, Iowa dent, etc. and further studied by whole transcriptome sequencing (maize leaves, V4 stage, optimal temperature conditions). Gene expression analyses revealed a set of 77 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two groups, out of which 20 were annotated as related to abiotic stress response. ATP synthase CF0 A subunit gene (atpI) was chosen for further characterization under low temperature conditions in two inbred lines (L1, L2) with most contrasting FPKM values, one belonging to each group. The experiment was performed with 5-day old and V4 maize seedlings, under optimal (25°/20°C) and low (8°/10°C) temperature conditions, with a 12h photoperiod. Samples for RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and qPCR expression analysis were taken after 6h and 24h exposure to experimental temperatures. The results showed different expression regulation of atpI dependent on cold exposure duration, developmental stage and genetic background. atpI expression was up-regulated in both genotypes in V4 stage, with the expression peak after 6h of treatment. In the 5-day old seedling stage, atpI expression depended on the genotype – it was down-regulated in L1, and up-regulated in L2. The expression in both genotypes in this developmental stage was at its highest after 24h of treatment. This suggests that mechanisms involved in ATP synthesis and photosynthetic phosphorylation are differentially regulated based on low temperature exposure duration, developmental stage and genetic background.

DEGs ,maize ,low temperature tolerance ,5-day old seedlings - Abstract
Earlier sowing is one of the most important strategies of ensuring good yield potential and crop quality under poor environmental conditions arising as consequences of climate changes. Sowing maize in early spring, when the temperatures are lower, enables avoidance of drought and high summer temperatures during the flowering and grain filling stages, but it also means that maize plants will be exposed to suboptimal temperatures during earlier developmental stages. Consequently, development of maize lines tolerant to low temperatures during those stages becomes precedence. An initial study encompassed whole transcriptome sequencing of 46 maize inbred lines at V4 stage grown under optimal temperature conditions. Gene expression analysis of maize genotypes grouped as Lancaster and non-Lancaster (BSSS, Iowa dent, etc.) revealed a set of 77 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Seven of these genes, related to abiotic stress response, were further characterized under low temperature conditions in eight inbred lines at V4 stage. Their expression showed specific profiles depending on the duration of low temperature exposure and genetic background. To test if these genes follow the same expression patterns in earlier developmental stages, the experiment was performed with 5-day old maize seedlings of two inbred lines (tolerant and sensitive), under optimal (25°/20°C) and low (8°/10°C) temperature conditions, with a 12h photoperiod. Samples for RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and qPCR expression analysis were taken after 6h and 24h exposure to experimental temperatures. Five analyzed genes showed different expression regulation dependent on cold exposure duration. Two genes showed regulation dependent both on cold exposure duration and genetic background. Additionally, three of five DEGs showed different expression patterns at 5-day old seedling stage than at V4 stage. The results imply that processes underlying maize low temperature response are differentially regulated based on stress exposure duration, developmental stage and genetic background.

S. Maize kernel is an important source of mineral elements in human nutrition. Differences in mineral content in maize kernel depend on genotype, cropping systems, fertilization, and meteorological conditions. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of different fertilization systems (mineral fertilizer – urea, organic fertilizer – Fertor, biofertilizer – Team micoriza plus, control – without fertilization) on kernel yield and variations in content of P, S, Ca, Mg, and Fe in kernel of white, yellow and red maize, during 2017 and 2018. Meteorological conditions indicated dry period during June–August 2017, while in 2018 precipitations were equally distributed. Therefore, the average yield was almost double lower in 2017 (to 4.6 t ha-1), compared to 2018, while higher average concentration of Ca, Mg, S, and Fe in maize kernels was recorded in 2017. With higher average yield, red maize kernel was richer in Ca, Fe, and P. Organic fertilizer increased average yield, and accumulation of Mg, P, and S in kernels. In regard to combinations, application of organic fertilizer in red maize resulted in increase of yield, Mg and P, while the biofertilizer increased Ca and urea increased Fe concentration in kernel. S concentration achieved the highest value in the control in yellow maize kernel. The greatest variations of kernel yield were in yellow maize (treatment with the organic fertilizer and control) and in red maize with the urea treatment, while the greatest variability of P, S, Mg, and Fe concentration was in red maize kernel (treatment with the bio- and organic fertilizer), as well as yellow maize kernel in the control. Presented results indicated that adjustments in growing conditions could impact accumulation of important minerals in kernel, particularly in red maize, which could be considered as a significant source of P, CA, Mg, and Fe, while yellow maize kernel could be referred as a significant source of S.
