The problem that this study addresses is to understand how microwave radiation is able to degrade genomic DNA of E. coli. In addition, a comparative study was made to evaluate the suitability of a high-throughput automated electrophoresis platform for quantifying the DNA degradation under microwave radiation. Overall, this study investigated the genomic DNA degradation of E. coli under microwave radiation using automated gel electrophoresis. To examine the viable organisms and degradation of genomic DNA under microwave exposure, we used three methods: (1) post-microwave exposure, where E. coli was enumerated using modified mTEC agar method using membrane filtration technique; (2) extracted genomic DNA of microwaved sample was quantified using the Qubit method; and (3) automated gel electrophoresis, the TapeStation 4200, was used to examine the bands of extracted DNA of microwaved samples. In addition, to examine the impacts of microwaves, E. coli colonies were isolated from a fecal sample (dairy cow manure), these colonies were grown overnight to prepare fresh E. coli culture, and this culture was exposed to microwave radiation for three durations: (1) 2 min; (2) 5 min; and (3) 8 min. In general, Qubit values (ng/µL) were proportional to the results of automated gel electrophoresis, TapeStation 4200, DNA integrity numbers (DINs). Samples from exposure studies (2 min, 5 min, and 8 min) showed no viable E. coli. Initial E. coli levels (at 0 min microwave exposure) were 5 × 108 CFU/mL, and the E. coli level was reduced to a non-detectable level within 2 min of microwave exposure. The relationships between Qubit and TapeStation measurements was linear, except for when the DNA level was lower than 2 ng/µL. In 8 min of microwave exposure, E. coli DNA integrity was reduced by 61.7%, and DNA concentration was reduced by 81.6%. The overall conclusion of this study is that microwave radiation had a significant impact on the genomic DNA of E. coli, and prolonged exposure of E. coli to microwaves can thus lead to a loss of genomic DNA integrity and DNA concentrations.

Drier and hotter conditions linked with anthropogenic climate change can increase wildfire frequency and severity, influencing terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycles at broad spatial and temporal scales. The impacts of wildfire are complex and dependent on several factors that may increase terrestrial deposition and the influx of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from plants into nearby aquatic systems, resulting in the darkening of water color. We tested the effects of plant biomass quantity and its interaction with fire (burned vs. unburned plant biomass) on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and degradation (biological vs. photochemical) and DOM composition in 400 L freshwater ponds using a gradient experimental design. DOC concentration increased nonlinearly with plant biomass loading in both treatments, with overall higher concentrations (>56 mg/L) in the unburned treatment shortly after plant addition. We also observed nonlinear trends in fluorescence and UV-visible absorbance spectroscopic indices as a function of fire treatment and plant biomass, such as greater humification and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (a proxy for aromatic DOM) over time. DOM humification occurred gradually over time with less humification in the burned treatment compared to the unburned treatment. Both burned and unburned biomass released noncolored, low molecular weight carbon compounds that were rapidly consumed by microbes. DOC decomposition exhibited a unimodal relationship with plant biomass, with microbes contributing more to DOC loss than photodegradation at intermediate biomass levels (100-300 g). Our findings demonstrate that the quantity of plant biomass leads to nonlinear responses in the dynamics and composition of DOM in experimental ponds that are altered by fire, indicating how disturbances interactively affect DOM processing and its role in aquatic environments.

We investigate the degradation mechanisms of In0.2Ga0.8N/GaN light emitting diodes through combined experimental analysis and simulations. The devices were submitted to constant current stress at 100 mA. Depending on the measuring current level, two degradation trends were observed: at high test currents (e.g. 200 mA), a monotonic decrease in optical power was observed; at low test currents (e.g. 5 mA), an initial degradation was observed, followed by an improvement in device efficiency (positive ageing). For the first time, such recovery effect was analyzed and modeled, as due to the generation of charged defects at the InGaN/GaN interface, resulting in the increase in the injection efficiency at low bias levels. ABSTRACT System reliability is a critical factor in designing complex engineering systems. Redundancy allocation problem (RAP) has attracted more interest owing to its wide scope of industrial applications for system reliability optimization. RAPs for binary‐state and multistate systems have been extensively studied. However, the redundancy allocation for continuous‐state systems composed of degrading components has not yet been fully explored. This study attempts to build the RAP for the continuous‐state parallel‐series system consisting of identical, independent, and nonrepairable components under active and cold‐standby redundancy strategies. The degradation of individual components in a system is continuous and modeled by the gamma process. The degradation at the system level is derived according to a deterministic structure function that relates the system degradation to the degradation of its components. Genetic algorithm and exhaustive search method are used to find the cost‐optimal redundancy design while satisfying a system reliability requirement. METTL3 has emerged as a promising therapeutic target in cancer treatment, although its oncogenic functions in melanoma development and potential for therapeutic targeting drug have not been fully explored. In this study, we define the oncogenic role of METTL3 in melanoma development and progression. Building on this insight, we examine our recently designed peptide inhibitor RM3, which targets the binding interface of METTL3/14 complex for disruption and subsequent ubiquitin‐mediated proteasomal degradation via the E3 ligase STUB1. RM3 treatment reduces proliferation, migration, and invasion, and induces apoptosis in melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. Subsequent transcriptomic analysis identified changes in immuno‐related genes following RM3‐mediated suppression of METTL3/14 N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) methyltransferase activity, suggesting a potential for interaction with immunotherapy. A combination treatment of RM3 with anti‐PD‐1 antibody results in significantly higher beneficial tumor response in vivo, with a good safety profile. Collectively, these findings not only delineate the oncogenic role of METTL3 in melanoma but also showcase RM3, acting as a peptide degrader, as a novel and promising strategy for melanoma treatment. In proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of amorphous carbon (a-C) coated metallic bipolar plates (BPs) increased with the passage of time, thereby severely limiting their widespread application. The performance of a-C coated BPs was considerably influenced by interface-induced degradation, which in turn was highly sensitive to sp2/sp3, size of sp2 clusters, and compactness of a-C. These factors were closely linked to the underlying metal transition layers and dependent on the deposition temperature. Therefore, in order to elucidate the impact of interface structure on their performance, a series of a-C coatings with Cr transition layer were magnetron sputtered onto 316L stainless steel at temperatures ranging from room temperature (R.T.) to 400 °C. The results revealed that as the deposition temperature increased, the a-C coatings became more porous and exhibited columnar growth characteristics attributed to the hill-like interface structures of the Cr transition layer. Additionally, both the sp2 content and cluster size of a-C increased. Correspondingly, the initial ICR decreased from 2.89 Ω cm2 at R.T. to 1.62 Ω cm2 at 400 °C. Furthermore, in long-term corrosion tests, both the ICR after corrosion and metal ion concentrations in the corrosion solution rose rapidly. Notably, the a-C coating deposited at 100 °C showed the lowest corrosion current density of 5.81 × 10−4 μA/cm2 and the smallest increase rate (65.9%) of ICR after the long-term electrochemical corrosion test, owing to its high sp2 content and dense structure. • Sp2 cluster size of a-C films were separately controlled by deposition temperature. • Increasing sp2 clusters size significantly reduced the initial ICR of a-C films. • XRR analysis revealed the decrease in film compactness with temperature increment. • Loose structure deteriorated the corrosion resistance of a-C in simulated PEMFC environment. Electric vehicles, as a major strategy for climate change mitigation, uses lithium-ion batteries extensively as the power source. However, the operation, performance and lifetime of lithium-ion batteries depend on the battery temperature, which can have a wide range due to heat generation within the battery and significant variations in the ambient conditions due to changes in seasons and geographical locations where electric vehicles are operated. In the present study, thermal management methods/strategies on the capacity fade of lithium-ion batteries are assessed through a validated capacity fade model for lithium-ion batteries along with a thermal model for the heat generation in the battery and dissipation over battery surface, represented by various thermal management methods. The driving conditions are simulated through a constant and various standard drive cycles. It is shown that battery temperature has the predominant impact on the capacity fade, and it can be controlled through effective thermal management. A much more significant spread in battery capacity fade occurs with various thermal management methods for a lower initial battery temperature (20°C) compared to the higher temperatures (35°C and 50°C), hence, thermal management is much more effective in reducing capacity fade at battery temperatures close to 20°C, which is considered the optimum operating temperature for lithium-ion batteries. Further, the results indicate that using a lower charge voltage can result in slightly less capacity fade over cycling. Regenerative braking makes it more realistic to use lower charge voltages, since the battery can be recharged during operation, thereby increasing driving range, while preventing increased capacity fade. RNA is a central molecule in life, involved in a plethora of biological processes and playing a key role in many diseases. Targeting RNA emerges as a significant endeavor in drug discovery, diverging from conventional protein‐centric approaches to tackle various pathologies. Whilst identifying small molecules that bind to specific RNA regions is the first step, the abundance of non‐functional RNA segments renders many interactions biologically inert. Consequently, small molecule binding does not necessarily meet stringent criteria for clinical translation, calling for solutions to push the field forward. Converting RNA‐binders into RNA‐degraders presents a promising avenue to enhance RNA‐targeting. This mini‐review outlines strategies and exemplars wherein simple small molecule RNA binders are reprogrammed into active degraders through the linkage of functional groups. These approaches encompass mechanisms that induce degradation via endogenous enzymes, termed RIBOTACs, as well as those with functional moieties acting autonomously to degrade RNA. This study investigated the degradation mechanisms of SiC-MgAl 2 O 4 refractory materials in a bench-scale entrained flow gasifier. Layered degradation and protective SiO 2 formation on SiC aggregates were observed by macroscopic, microscopic, phase analysis, and thermodynamic calculations. A comparative investigation of erosion rates revealed that SiC-MgAl 2 O 4 materials located away from the burner had an unusually low erosion rate of 0.0017 mm/h, which was significantly lower than that reported in their counterparts situated near the burner (0.0167 mm/h). This performance surpassed even that of high-chrome refractory materials positioned at a similar distance from the burner. The findings underscore the remarkable durability of SiC-MgAl 2 O 4 , demonstrating its significant potential as a sustainable and chrome-free alternative for application in harsh gasification conditions. The environment-specific degradation patterns, characterized by the formation of mullite and cordierite, revealed the complex interaction between refractory materials and gasification environments. In this paper, summarise the characterization and synthesis of the pure and Eu:WO 3 nanoparticles and their applications in photocatalytic and antibacterial activity. The monoclinic phase confirmed by the XRD analysis of the prepared specimens. SEM and HR-TEM scrutiny revealed nanoplate morphology scrutiny. EDS and XPS scrutiny confirmed the composition of elements of Eu, O, and W. FTIR analysis likely used for additional confirmation of functional groups. UV–Vis Analysis determined the band gap energy (Eg) of the nanoparticles, which decreased with raising the concentration of Eu doping. Optical properties of the band gap energy decreased with raising the concentration of Eu doping. Photocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles exhibited high photocatalytic activity, with a 95.3 % methylene blue (MB) dye split when exposed to visible light. The Eu:WO 3 (7 wt%) nanoparticles showed the best photocatalytic property within 120 min. The Eu:WO 3 (7 wt%) nanoparticles showed the maximum antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus , with a zone of embarrassment of 19 mm. Overall, the study demonstrates the successful synthesis of Eu-doped WO 3 nanoparticles and their potential applications in photo catalysis and antibacterial activity, with promising results particularly at higher Eu doping concentrations. Background: A simple suspension method, where solid formulations are disintegrated and suspended by being soaked in warm water followed by tube administration, is widely used, especially for elderly patients with dysphagia in Japanese clinical settings. However, there is insufficient information on drug stability in the simple co-suspension of multiple formulations especially including acidic or alkaline ones. The influence of occasional prolonged soakage on drug stability is also of concern. In this study, the chemical stability of typical β-lactam antibiotics, amoxicillin, and cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride, was investigated in simple co-suspensions with magnesium oxide (MgO), which is frequently used as an alkaline laxative for the elderly. Methods: Amoxicillin (capsule) or cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride (tablet) was placed with or without MgO (tablet) in a centrifuge tube containing warm water (55 °C). The tube was allowed to stand for 10 min or 5 h at room temperature and simple suspensions were prepared. The suspensions were then treated with large amounts of solvents and neutralized using a weakly acidic cation exchange resin. The resulting solutions were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The degradation products were identified by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results: Amoxicillin was found to be partially degraded to amoxicilloic acid and amoxicillin diketopiperazine by the co-suspension with MgO. The degree of degradation increased with the prolonged soaking. The recovery rates of cefcapene pivoxil decreased due to the poor solubility in the co-suspensions with MgO and no degradation product of the drug was observed. Conclusions: Amoxicillin and MgO should be independently suspended because of the chemical instability of amoxicillin. This study has also indicated there is a degradation risk after prolonged soaking. Tetrandrine (Tet), a well-known drug of calcium channel blocker, has been broadly applied for anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrogenetic therapy. However, due to the functional diversity of ubiquitous calcium channels, potential side-effects may be expected. Our previous report revealed an inhibitory effect of Tet on myogenesis of skeletal muscle. Here, we found that Tet induced protein degradation resulting in the myofibril atrophy. Upon administration with a relative high dose (40 mg/kg) of Tet for 28 days, the mice displayed significantly reduced muscle mass, strength force, and myosin heavy chain (MyHC) protein levels. The MyHC reduction was further detected in C2C12 myotubes after treating with Tet. Interestingly, the expression of Atrogin-1 and Murf-1, the skeletal muscle specific E3 ligases of protein ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS), was accordingly up-regulated, and the reduced MyHC was significantly mitigated by MG132, a 26S proteasome inhibitor, indicating a key role of UPS in the protein degradation of muscle cells. Further study showed that Tet induced autophagy also participated in the protein degradation. Mechanistically, Tet treatment caused ROS production in myotubes that in turn targeted on FoxO3/AKT signaling, resulting in the activation of UPS and autophagy processes that were involved in the protein degradation. Sodium chlorite (NaClO2) is a new type of air disinfectant, which can oxidize formaldehyde into carbon dioxide (CO2) on account of releasing chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas under acidic condition. Unfortunately, NaClO2 is prone to moisture absorption and decomposition when exposed to air. In this paper, NaClO2 was microencapsulated based on emulsion crosslinking method for improving its stability and controlled release properties. Due to their high biocompatibility, sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC‐Na) were selected as the wall material to prepare NaClO2‐SA/CMC‐Na composite microcapsules. The results showed that mean particle size of NaClO2‐SA/CMC‐Na composite microcapsules was about 225 nm, and their encapsulation ratio was up to 73.18%. In addition, the thermal stability and environmental tolerance of NaClO2 are improved greatly through microencapsulating. It was proved by formaldehyde degradation testing that the efficiency of formaldehyde degradation using resulted samples can continue to increase after seven days in pH 6.5 environment, indicating their good controlled‐release performance. Moreover, degradation efficiency on 30 µg/mL formaldehyde solution using the resulted microcapsules is up to 97.08%. Meanwhile, after 20 repetition degradation, NaClO2‐SA/CMC‐Na composite microcapsules can still continuously degrade formaldehyde gas. The electrophysical properties of nanostructured MgAl2O4 ceramics sintered at 1300 °C for 5 h, as well as thick films were obtained and investigated. The study of adsorption-desorption cycles was carried out after sintering and aging test. It is shown that ceramic has a sensitivity to humidity in the range of 25–95% with minimal hysteresis of the characteristic in adsorption-desorption cycles, which can be eliminated after the aging test. Thick films based on it are characterized by hysteresis and loss of sensitivity at low values of relative humidity, which is caused by the clogging of small nanopores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on an in situ FTIR study of the thermo-oxidative degradation of a flexible epoxy resin. Different and complementary approaches to the analysis of the spectral data were employed, providing a detailed description of the process in terms of kinetics and mechanisms. A preliminary normal coordinate analysis, based on the DFT method, allowed for a reliable interpretation of the observed spectrum, increasing the amount of available structural information. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy provided details on the evolution of the reacting network structure. The relative stability of the various functional groups was ranked, and the most likely sites of initiation were identified. Oxygen fixation on the network chains produced amide and ketone groups, with the latter developing at a higher rate. The kinetic profiles of various functional groups were accurately simulated by a first-order, biexponential model, which allowed a quantitative comparison among their relative stabilities. Microorganisms and pesticide residues are among the major health concerns associated with food products. Although ozone (O3) is currently being employed in various applications in apple processing, there are few studies investigating the effects of O3 treatments on microorganisms and pesticides in apple juice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of O3 treatment on microorganisms, pesticide residues, and physicochemical properties of apple juice and to compare with that of classical pasteurization. O3 was as effective as pasteurization against E. coli and coliform bacteria; the counts of these microorganisms were below the detectable level after a treatment for 15 min. O3 was also effective in reducing the counts of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria and yeast-mold, but longer treatments were required for total inactivation. All the pesticides investigated were degraded by O3, but at different rates. Reduction rates were quite high (75–100%) for methoxyfenozide, dimethoate, and pyrimethanil, however, acetamiprid and imidacloprid were degraded by only 7.1% and 14.5%, respectively. O3 treatment caused drastic decreases in color and turbidity values, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of apple juice. The performance of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites reinforced with functionalized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in rutile and anatase crystalline phases were systematically investigated. The results underline that the incorporation of TiO2, regardless of its crystalline structure, significantly enhances PLA's crystallinity by 85%. Notably, rutile TiO2, when functionalized with higher glutaric acid concentrations, was an effective crystallinity booster by 95%, passing from 20.39% to 39.58% crystallinity for the PLA/TiO2 R20 + 10% system. Furthermore, this research elucidates that the selection between anatase and rutile phases plays a vital role in the photostabilization. Functionalized Rutile TiO2 exhibited exceptional UV resistance, effectively inhibiting photodegradation; for example, after 15 days of exposure, the functionalized systems exhibited a 497.6% improvement for PLA/TiO2 R10 + 5% (22.1 ± 2.5 MPa), while the PLA/TiO2 R10 + 5% showed an 85.1% increase in composite stiffness (35.5 ± 3.5 MPa) after 7 days of degradation, in comparison with pristine PLA (19.2 ± 2.9 MPa). Anatase, conversely, displayed varying effects depending on concentration, acting as a stabilizer at lower levels and a promoter of degradation at higher concentrations. This knowledge enables the precise modifying of PLA composites for specific applications, balancing crystallinity, mechanical properties, and UV resistance for a diverse array of applications. This study explores the influence of environmental factors and printing orientation on the aging of additive manufactured polyamide 12 (PA12). A multifactorial experimental design was employed to age specimens under controlled conditions. Analysis of variance revealed that temperature, irradiance, relative humidity, and time significantly impact the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Young's modulus (Y) of PA12. Applying multiple linear regression methods produced predictive models with R2 values of 0.9075 for the UTS and 0.5226 for the Y, indicating substantial explanatory power for the specimen's UTS. These models enhance understanding of PA12 aging, aiding in the design of more durable mechanical parts for applications exposed to environmental conditions, such as footwear, automotive components, and medical devices. As next steps, future research could empirically deploy these developed predictive models and explore longer time scales to further elucidate the long‐term aging behavior of additively manufactured PA12. Sulfide ZnS-SiO2 composite photocatalysts with biogenic silica matrix were prepared by sol–gel method based on wet gel and xerogel. FT-IR, SEM, XRD, EDXRF, UV–Vis, and XPS methods were systematically used to characterize the obtained materials. The use of support allowed to obtain stable porous (SBET = 79–105 m2 g−1; Vpore = 0.25–0.17 cm3·g−1) ZnS-SiO2 photocatalysts in aqueous solutions. Zn2+ content in methyl orange solution after its degradation was 0.4 MPC. ZnS-SiO2 composites had 3.68–3.70 eV band gap. The obtained materials were photoactive under different irradiation conditions (sunlight, UV-light, Xenon light, visible light) due to effective separation of charge carriers (e− and h+). Methyl orange degradation degree under UV light excitation was 35–88%, under sunlight – 11–30%. ZnS-SiO2 composite synthesized using silica xerogel showed a greater photoactivity due to a presence of cone-shaped or cylindrical pores with one open end in its structure and a higher content of ZnS photoactive component. This review provides an overview on the fate and behavior of imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, in agricultural environments. The study focuses on four key aspects: adsorption and leaching of imidacloprid in soil, degradation and hydrolysis of imidacloprid in soil and water, uptake and persistence of imidacloprid in plants, and volatilization of imidacloprid to the atmosphere. The review presents the latest findings from research on each of these topics. While imidacloprid is highly effective at controlling pests, it is also known to persist in the environment, posing risks to non-target organisms such as bees, birds, and aquatic life. Moreover, there is increasing concern about its potential to accumulate in the soil and water systems, which may have long-term effects on the ecosystem. The review suggests that better understanding of the behavior and fate of imidacloprid in agricultural environments is essential for developing effective strategies to minimize its environmental impact. Co‐precipitated biotic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles from the leaves of the Hibiscus rosa sinensis plant were used to produce bio‐reductant nanoparticles. The CoFe2O4 biomolecules were analyzed using EDX analysis to identify their structure through XRD, FTIR, UV, VSM, and SEM characterization. The cubic phase and crystallite size of biotic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were determined using XRD analysis. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm Cation migration and Co−Fe−O interaction. Using SEM, TEM, and EDX, it was confirmed that spherical biosynthesized CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and the material they were made were present. VSM analysis confirmed the super‐paramagnetic nature of the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and magnetic pulse. Biosynthetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were used to eliminate organic(MB dye) and bacterial(S. aureus, B.Substils, and E. coli bacterial strains) pollutants. In this study, biocompatible magnesium oxide (MgO) nanostructures were synthesized using an aqueous solution of Piper betle leaf methanolic extract. The color change during the synthesis process, i.e., colorless to dark brown solution, indicates the formation of MgO nano structures which is further confirmed through UV–Visible spectrum that exhibited characteristic absorption band at 329 nm. Results obtained from morphological analysis reveal that MgO nano flakes (MgO NFs) are present as triangular and polyhedral shapes having an average size ranging between 150 and 200 nm with clear lattice fringes. Secondary metabolites were clearly identified from the FTIR spectrum, and they helped in reduction and stabilization during the synthesis of MgO NFs. The XRD pattern displayed Braggs planes of (111), (220), (220), (311), and (222) with a face centered cubic (FCC) structure, which was further confirmed from the SAED pattern using HRTEM analysis. The as-synthesized MgO NFs manifested profound antimicrobial activity against gram positive as well as gram-negative bacteria with favorable biocompatibility. Furthermore, methylene orange dye was degraded almost completely (98.36 %) in the presence of MgO NFs photo catalysts within 1 h of sunlight illumination. Melt extrusion process was followed in order to improve the high crystallinity and poor toughness of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) blend materials. It was achieved by the incorporation of epoxy‐terminated hyperbranched polyester (EHBP) elastomer into PHBV and polycaprolactone (PCL). EHBP cross‐links PHBV and PCL through ring‐opening polymerization of epoxy‐terminated and carboxyl groups. The mass percentages of EHBP in the PHBV/PCL blends are 1, 2, 3, and 4mass%, which are expressed as 1, 2, 3, and 4 phr in the following text. Therefore, when the EHBP content was 3 phr, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the blends are increased to 750 and 15 MPa, respectively, which was comparable to the biodegradable polymers used for packaging. Simultaneously, compatibility between PHBV and PCL has been improved and the particle size reduction of blends can be obviously observed in scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) analysis revealed that PHBV and PCL showed improved compatibility with each other by the addition of EHBP. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the decrease of crystallinity of the blend was consistent with the increase in mechanical properties. Additionally, all the bio‐blends show good thermal stability. Food overall migration studies showed that the amount of migration of composite materials in contact with food was also far lower than the national standard value. As the application of polycarbonate (PC) in various fields continues to expand, the requirements for its flame retardancy are becoming increasingly stringent. To enhance the flame retardancy of PC, employing multi‐element synergistic effects and developing novel flame retardants are considered as vital strategies. This work introduces a blend of 1,3‐Benzenedisulfonic acid dipotassium salt (KSP) and three types of phenyl polysiloxanes, namely Octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (P4), Octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS), and ladder‐like Polyphenylsesquioxane (L‐PPSQ), into PC to create composites. The thermal stability and combustion properties of these composites were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 vertical burning, and cone calorimetry tests. Composites with phenyl polysiloxanes achieved a UL‐94 V‐0 flame retardant rating for 1.6 mm thickness sample and reduced the peak heat release rate by 30%–45%. PC composites with 3% OPS and 0.03% KSP achieved optimal performance, howing a LOI of 34.5%, a 45.4% reduction in peak heat release, and a 40.5% reduction in total smoke release. Bacterial proteins of ≤50 amino acids, denoted small proteins or microproteins, have been traditionally understudied and overlooked, as standard computational, biochemical, and genetic approaches often do not detect proteins of this size. However, with the realization that small proteins are stably expressed and have important cellular roles, there has been increased identification of small proteins in bacteria and eukaryotes. Gradually, the functions of a few of these small proteins are being elucidated. Many interact with larger protein products to modulate their subcellular localization, stabilities, or activities. Here, we provide an overview of these diverse functions in bacteria, highlighting generalities among bacterial small proteins and similarly sized proteins in eukaryotic organisms and discussing questions for future research. A physics-based model of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been developed to predict the decline in their performance accurately. The model considers both electrochemical and mechanical factors. During charge and discharge cycles, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer thickens, leading to increased resistance, higher overvoltage, more lithium deposition, dendrite growth, and reduced discharge capacity. Additionally, graphite expands during lithium insertion and contracts during extraction, causing mechanical stress and cracks. These cracks expose more surface area for SEI growth, intensifying lithium loss. The model also considers the loss of active material within the electrodes, which further reduces discharge capacity. The molecular modification of chlorogenic acid (1) through γ-irradiation resulted in the formation of five new products: chlorogenosins A (2), B (3), C (4), D (5), and E (6) along with known compounds rosmarinosin B (7), protocatechuic acid (8), and protocatechuic aldehyde (9). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic methods, including one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The potential anti-inflammatory activities of all the isolated compounds were determined by evaluating their inhibitory effects on the nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. Notably, compounds 2 and 3 , which contained two hydroxymethyl functionalities instead of the trans -olefinic moiety present in the original chlorogenic acid, exhibited stronger inhibitory effects on NO production than that of the original compound. The livelihoods of the majority of Uganda's population depend on declining environmental resources. The sustainability of the natural environment requires that the people who are interdependent with it, as well as the structures of governance and leadership around them, understand the implications of resource degradation and take deliberate steps towards restoration. The interdependency of human and environment conditions in Uganda requires multidisciplinary attention and this paper reflects a contribution to this end. Socio‐cultural perceptions and relations with a vulnerable environment are put into dialogue with the physical status of environmental resources in Alebtong District, Uganda. Southern epistemological perspectives are considered in relation to Western scientific paradigms. Culturally responsive socio‐cultural research data are related to MODIS NDVI data, using time series analyses and NDVI as a proxy for productivity. The research confirms the declining availability and condition of natural resources and the acknowledgement of local influence on this condition. Despite this, deliberate community and governance efforts towards conservation and restoration varied from non‐existent to insufficient. The causes for this inconsistency revolve around conflicting priorities. This paper demonstrates and discusses the difficult trade‐offs in decision‐making about natural resources that rural communities face, and supports new partnership models as a route to improvement. In the current work, chloro(meso-tetrakis(phenyl)porphyrin) manganese(III) [Mn(TPP)Cl] was synthesized following two steps: the preparation of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (H⁠2TPP) and the insertion of manganese into the free porphyrin H2TPP. The compounds were characterized using SEM, FT-IR, UV, TGA/DTA, and XRD analyses. Manganese(III) meso-porphyrins exhibited hyper-type electronic spectra with a half-vacant metal orbital with symmetry, such as [dπ:dxz and dyz]. The thermal behavior of [Mn(TPP)(Cl)] changed (three-step degradation process) compared to the initial H2TPP (one-step degradation process), confirming the insertion of manganese into the core of the free porphyrin H2TPP. Furthermore, [Mn(TPP)Cl] was used to degrade calmagite (an azo dye) using H2O2 as an oxidant. The effects of dye concentration, reaction time, H2O2 dose, and temperature were investigated. The azo dye solution was completely degraded in the presence of [Mn(TPP)(Cl)]/H2O2 at pH = 6, temperature = 20 °C, C0 = 30 mg/L, and H2O2 = 40 mL/L. The computed low activation energy (Ea = 10.55 Kj/mol) demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed catalytic system for the azo dye degradation. Overall, based on the synthesis process and the excellent catalytic results, the prepared [Mn(TPP)Cl] could be used as an effective catalyst for the treatment of calmagite-contaminated effluents. Nowadays, plastic contamination worldwide is a concerning reality that can be addressed with appropriate society education as well as looking for innovative polymeric alternatives based on the reuse of waste and recycling with a circular economy point of view, thus taking into consideration that a future world without plastic is quite impossible to conceive. In this regard, in this review, we focus on sustainable polymeric materials, biodegradable and bio-based polymers, additives, and micro/nanoparticles to be used to obtain new environmentally friendly polymeric-based materials. Although biodegradable polymers possess poorer overall properties than traditional ones, they have gained a huge interest in many industrial sectors due to their inherent biodegradability in natural environments. Therefore, several strategies have been proposed to improve their properties and extend their industrial applications. Blending strategies, as well as the development of composites and nanocomposites, have shown promising perspectives for improving their performances, emphasizing biopolymeric blend formulations and bio-based micro and nanoparticles to produce fully sustainable polymeric-based materials. The Review also summarizes recent developments in polymeric blends, composites, and nanocomposite plasticization, with a particular focus on naturally derived plasticizers and their chemical modifications to increase their compatibility with the polymeric matrices. The current state of the art of the most important bio-based and biodegradable polymers is also reviewed, mainly focusing on their synthesis and processing methods scalable to the industrial sector, such as melt and solution blending approaches like melt-extrusion, injection molding, film forming as well as solution electrospinning, among others, without neglecting their degradation processes. Surface treatment of perovskite materials with their layered counterparts has become an ubiquitous strategy for maximizing device performance. While layered materials confer great benefits to the longevity and long‐term efficiency of the resulting device stack via passivation of defects and surface traps, numerous reports have previously demonstrated that these materials evolve under exposure to light and humidity, suggesting that they are not fully stable. Therefore, it is crucial to study the behavior of these materials in isolation and in conditions mimicking a device stack. Here, it is shown that perovskite capping layers templated by a range of cations on top of methylammonium lead iodide devolve in conditions commonly found during perovskite fabrication, such as exposure to light, solvent, and moisture. Photophysical, structural, and morphological studies are used to show that the degradation of these layered perovskites occurs via a self‐limiting, pinhole‐mediated mechanism. This results in the loss of whole perovskite sheets, from a few monolayers to tens of nanometers of material, until the system stabilizes again as demonstrated for exfoliated flakes of PEA2PbI4. Activation, break‐in, and/or pre‐treatment protocols are generally applied to energy conversion devices before regular operation to reach stable performance. There remains much to understand about the relationships among physical properties, performance, and electrochemical pre‐treatments. Here, a design‐of‐experiments (DoE) strategy is employed to address this gap by demonstrating the influence of five pre‐treatment parameters for carbon‐supported Pt‐nanoparticle catalysts on the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A subset of pre‐treatments, developed using a central composite design, are tested in a flow cell combined with an inductively‐coupled plasma mass spectrometer (on‐line ICP‐MS). The DoE‐based approach facilitates comprehensive insights from two orders of magnitude fewer experiments than a conventional grid search. The coupled on‐line ICP‐MS setup enables effective catalysis and real‐time catalyst dissolution data. Leveraging insights from DoE for on‐line ICP‐MS and additional characterization, a model is built between the degradation of a multi‐dimensional supported Pt surface, its performance, and applied electrochemical parameters. These investigations identify surface modifications, such as oxidation, and subsequent restructuring of Pt during pre‐treatment as a primary cause of performance deterioration during ORR. By combining DoE with advanced characterization techniques, a powerful approach is demonstrated to gain a mechanistic understanding of pre‐treatment protocols that can be broadly adapted to various reaction chemistries. Developing suitable cathodes of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) with robust electrochemical performance and industrial application potential is crucial for the commercialization of large‐scale stationary energy storage systems. Layered sodium transition metal oxides, NaxTmO2 (Tm representing transition metal), possessing considerable specific capacity, high operational potential, facile synthesis, cost‐effectiveness, and environmentally friendly characteristics, stand out as viable cathode materials. Nevertheless, the prevailing challenge of air‐induced degradation in most NaxTmO2 significantly increases costs associated with production, storage, and transportation, coupled with a rapid decay in reversible capacity. This inherent obstacle inevitably impedes the advancement and commercial viability of SIBs. To address this challenge, it is essential to decode the chemistry of degradation caused by air exposure and develop protective strategies accordingly. In this review, a comprehensive and in‐depth understanding of the fundamental mechanisms associated with air‐induced degradation is provided. Additionally, the current state‐of‐the‐art effective protective strategies are explored and discuss the corresponding sustainability and scalability features. This review concludes with an outlook on present and future research directions concerning air‐stable cathode materials, offering potential avenues for upcoming investigations in advancing alkali metal layered oxides. Objective(s): Quercetin is a plant flavonoid known for its pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. However, there is limited information available regarding its potential toxicities. A previous study showed that quercetin can inhibit human ether-a-go-related gene (hERG, also named KCNH2) currents, which may lead to long QT syndrome, torsade de pointes (TdP), and even sudden cardiac death. This study aimed to investigate the effects of quercetin on hERG and its potential mechanism. Materials and Methods: hERG currents and action potential duration (APD) were assessed using the patch clamp technique. Molecular docking was employed to elucidate the binding sites between quercetin and hERG. Transfection of wild-type or mutant plasmids was used to verify the results of molecular docking. Western blot was performed to determine the expression levels of hERG, transcription factor SP1, molecular chaperones HSP70 and HSP90, phosphorylated E3 ubiquitin ligase p-Nedd4-2, serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase (SGK1), and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Immunoprecipitation was conducted to evaluate hERG ubiquitination. Results: Quercetin acutely blocked hERG current by binding to F656 amino acid residue, subsequently accelerating channel inactivation. Long-term incubation of quercetin accelerates Nedd4-2-mediated ubiquitination degradation of hERG channels by inhibiting the PI3K/SGK1 signaling pathway. Moreover, the APD of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPS-CMs) is significantly prolonged by 30 µM quercetin. In response to the long-term non-degradation and environmental pollution caused by the use of horizontal plastic drainage boards, a new approach is proposed in this study, which involves employing horizontal straw drainage system under vacuum preloading treatment for dredging sludge. Through laboratory model tests, the results show that horizontal straw drainage system exhibited excellent performance in treating dredged sludge, with an optimal spacing design of 40–60 cm. During the vacuum preloading test, the straw drainage system continuously degraded, and the degradation by-products of straw, in turn, enriched elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc., in the soil. The two processes of the degradation of straw drainage system and the eco-reinforcement of dredged sludge interacted actively with each other. Finally, a new reinforcement method for on-site dredging sludge was proposed by installing layered straw drainage boards. The present study investigates the effects of the degradation of mechanical properties (pinching, stiffness degradation, and strength degradation) in load-deformation relationship of the superstructures equipped with friction pendulum systems on the seismic fragility and reliability results. An equivalent two-degree-of-freedom model is employed, in which the Bouc-Wen hysteretic model characterizes the inelastic behavior of both the superstructure and the isolator. To examine a wide variety of system combinations with different structural properties and degradation severity, a comprehensive parametric study is performed. Incremental dynamic analyses are carried out to develop fragility functions. Subsequently, the seismic reliability of both the superstructure and the isolation level is assessed. Results indicate that the negative effects of degrading behavior are more prominent in stiff superstructures as it significantly decreases structural capacity and reliability indices. It is demonstrated that the system is primarily influenced by pinching behavior rather than degradation in strength and stiffness, especially at low intensity levels that correspond to lower limit-states. In the majority of investigated systems, the seismic demand in the isolator decreases when superstructures undergo degrading behavior. Overall, such effects should be considered in the reliability-based design procedure to attain design consistency in terms of reliability. Comprehensive Summary: The saline and buffered environment in actual wastewater imposes higher demands on Fenton and Fenton‐like catalytic systems. This study developed a MoS2 co‐catalytic Fe2O3 Fenton‐like system with controllable Lewis acid‐base sites, achieving efficient treatment of various model pollutants and actual industrial wastewater under neutral buffered environment. The acidic microenvironment structured by the edge S sites (Lewis basic sites) in the MoS2/Fe2O3 catalyst is susceptible to the influence of Lewis acidic sites constructed by Mo and Fe element, affecting catalytic performance. Optimizing the ratio of precursor amounts ensures the stable presence of the acidic microenvironment on the surface of catalyst, enabling the beneficial co‐catalytic effect of Mo sites to be realized. Furthermore, it transcends the rigid constraints imposed by the Fenton reaction on reaction environments, thereby expanding the applicability of commonplace oxides such as Fe2O3 in actual industrial water remediation. The sustainability and feasibility of using visible irradiation in photocatalysis is a promising approach for water purification. In this study, photocatalytic degradation of a widely used analgesic and antipyretic drug, acetaminophen (ACM), with metal-loaded an efficient photocatalyst (TiO 2 NPs-Co/Polycalix (Christen et al., 2010) [4]resorcinarene (TCP)) was inv estigated using visible light. photocatalyst structural, surface, and morphological features were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TEM, EDX, PL, and DRS analyses. Considering various sites of Polycalix (Christen et al., 2010) [4]resorcinarene in the TCP, studied by trapping experiments. A novel charge transfer bridge for electron-hole recombination is made possible by using Co and TiO 2 as electron transfer mediators with electronic conductivity. This results in efficient process and energy optimization, which makes it easier for ACM to degrade throughout the absorption process. The ACM (15 and 40 mg/L) achieved complete degradation under visible light irradiation with 0.6 g/L of TCP at pH = 5.0 during 120 min reaction because of the good synergetic effect of the catalyst systems. Additionally, the intermediates generated by photo electrocatalytic activities were identified, and two potential paths for degradation were suggested. Textile dyeing releases over 80% of industrial effluents without proper treatment. Dye discharged into effluents typically needs degradation before release into aquatic environments. In this regard, the present paper reports the nanocomposite copper oxide/polyaniline (CuO/PANI) is successfully synthesized by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method and investigates their catalytic activity against organic dyes and nitro compounds. CuO is synthesized by colloidal sol–gel method using oxalic acid as capping agent to obtained desired morphology. The elemental composition, unit cell and lattice parameters of nanocomposite are characterized by using XRD. The XRD revealed that nanoparticles are extremely crystalline, but nanocomposite is amorphous because of the presence of polymer. The structural and elemental analysis of CuO and CuO/PANI is confirmed by SEM and EDX analysis. FTIR spectra of CuO showed bending vibration, while CuO/PANI showed the presence of benzenoid and quinoid rings. Catalytic productivity of the CuO and CuO/PANI as catalysts in degradation of dyes and reduction of nitro compounds is also studied. The degradation and reduction processes are monitored through the utilization of UV–Vis spectrophotometer. The catalytic activity of both catalysts is evaluated by several parameters including kapp, degradation/reduction time, % degradation/reduction, degraded/reduced concentration and half-life. Among all substrates, highest kapp is 0.0653 min−1 for CV by CuO, while 0.0502 min−1 for EBT by CuO/PANI due to large surface area. Acidic conditions affect the archaeological bone in the burial and in uncontrolled display and storage environment or due to improper restoration processes. Accordingly, bones become weak and fragile. This study aims to evaluate nano calcium propionate and nano styrene butyl acrylate (used for the first time in the treatment of bones) at different concentrations for deacidification and consolidation of fragile bones. New bone samples were prepared. Artificial accelerated aging (acid and heat) was applied to prepare aged untreated samples. Deacidification and consolidation processes using the materials mentioned above were applied. The analytical techniques used were transmission electron microscope (TEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used for morphological and thermal stability investigation for the prepared nano styrene butyl acrylate copolymer and its calcium propionate nonocomposites, a digital microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for investigation of the surface morphology, pH value measurement, change of color measurement, attenuated total reflection—Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FTIR), contact angle (wettability), and X-ray diffraction analysis for measurement of bone crystallinity. The results proved that acid-heat aging affected bone properties such as changes in surface morphology and color, decrease in pH value, and contact angle. Bone samples became more crystalline, and the chemical composition of bone was also affected. The treatment of aged untreated bone samples with the materials used in this study improved their properties, such as increasing the pH value and contact angle. With the increasing focus on sustainable development, the exploration of renewable and environmentally friendly resources for product synthesis has become paramount. This study aims to investigate the production of dihydroxystearic acid through the in situ hydrolysis of epoxidized oleic acid. Epoxidation of oleic acid was achieved through the utilization of in situ generated performic acid, resulting in the production of epoxidized oleic acid. The synthesis of performic acid involved the combination of formic acid as an oxygen carrier and hydrogen peroxide as an oxygen donor. A maximum epoxide yield of 65% was attained at an optimum reaction time of 30 min. Hydrochloric acid was found to be the most efficient catalyst. A kinetics study was also done using the genetic algorithm to find the reaction rate of dihydroxystearic acid production. The difference between simulation and experimental results was less than 0.1%, which is insignificant. The findings highlight the potential of utilizing renewable resources for the synthesis of high-value compounds, promoting a greener and more sustainable future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulmonary hypertension is a complex and heterogeneous condition with five main subtypes (groups). This review focuses on pulmonary hypertension caused by chronic hypoxia (hypoxic pulmonary hypertension, HPH, group 3). It is based mainly on our own experimental work, especially our collaboration with the group of Professor Herget, whose fifth anniversary of death we commemorate. We have found that oxidation and degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vitro, in either the presence or the absence of pro-inflammatory cells, activate vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. Significant changes in the ECM of pulmonary arteries also occurred in vivo in hypoxic rats, namely a decrease in collagen VI and an increase in matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in the tunica media, which may also contribute to the growth activation of VSMCs. The proliferation of VSMCs was also enhanced in their co-culture with macrophages, most likely due to the paracrine production of growth factors in these cells. However, hypoxia itself has a dual effect: on the one hand, it can activate VSMC proliferation and hyperplasia, but on the other hand, it can also induce VSMC hypertrophy and increased expression of contractile markers in these cells. The influence of hypoxia-inducible factors, microRNAs and galectin-3 in the initiation and development of HPH, and the role of cell types other than VSMCs (endothelial cells, adventitial fibroblasts) are also discussed. Nonabsorbable polymers used in biomedical applications are assumed to be permanently stable based on short‐term testing, but some may be susceptible to oxidative degradation over several years of implantation. Traditional in vitro oxidative degradation screenings employ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solutions. However, the inherent instability of H2O2 can compromise the consistency of oxidative conditions, especially over extended periods and at elevated temperatures used for accelerated testing. In this study, an automated reactive accelerated aging (aRAA) system, which integrates an electrochemical detection method and a feedback loop, was utilized to ensure precise control of H2O2 concentrations during polymer oxidative degradation testing. The reproducibility of the aRAA system was evaluated by comparing four identical setups. Its efficacy as an oxidation challenge was demonstrated on (i) medical‐grade vitamin E (VE) blended ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and (ii) highly crosslinked (HXL) UHMWPE as model materials. The aRAA‐aged VE‐UHMWPE and HXL‐UHMWPE samples were also compared against samples aged via an existing accelerated aging standard, ASTM F2003‐02(2022). Samples were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy to calculate their oxidation index per ASTM F2102‐17. We observed that the aRAA system was more effective in oxidizing VE‐UHMWPE and HXL‐UHMWPE than the traditional ASTM F2003‐02(2022) method. By providing a standardized and reliable approach to assess polymer oxidative degradation, the aRAA system could enhance the accuracy of long‐term stability predictions for nonresorbable polymers in medical devices.
