The purpose of this study is to examine whether a rebuke or probationary time affects the careers of priests within the Church of Sweden. It is the diocesan chapter that decides on such measures. The reason may be a breach of consecration vows or that the priest has damaged the esteem of ordained ministry to a great extent. The purpose is primarily to protect the congregations from unsuitable priests. Eight career steps were identified mainly based on the position's salary, influence and autonomy. The career of a study group of 35 priests who received a rebuke or probationary period was compared with a control group of 42 priests, who were reported to the diocesan chapter but where the case did not lead to any action. Data were collected for every three years 2004-2019. The priests have been followed through a register study for up to 10 years or until retirement. The results show that the careers of priests in the study group are negatively affected. For five years after the chapter's decision, they have an average lower position. The year after the decision, about 25% of these are without employment in the church. Year five to ten, the careers of these priests are on a par with the careers of the control group. The results indicate that priests in the study group have a worse career than the priests in the control group. This is particularly obvious in the first five years after the decision. The purpose of the disciplinary decisions is partly fulfilled by the fact that these priests for a period do not work within the church. This study is one of the few, which examines the careers of professionals who have received some form of reprimand. It thus constitutes a new contribution to the research on professionals. Since water is considered vital for the human life, rituals with water have developed in many religions and in a multitude of churches. In the Orthodox Church and the Greek Catholic Churches, the Great Water Consecration is celebrated on two consecutive days, on January 5 and 6, when the Eastern Churches baptize the Lord in Celebrate Jordan.

We discuss the role of dedication ceremonies at Paquimé, Chihuahua, Mexico, using an animistic perspective involving other-than-human, spiritually potent agents who influence and are influenced by humans. Animated agents can include artifacts and architecture, which humans create through negotiating with other agents (e.g., the potter negotiates with the clay, kiln, and fire to make pottery). Dedication ceremonies in such cases help bring active agents to life and imbue them with the specific characteristics that humans want them to have. We illustrate this process using Puebloan ethnology from the North American Southwest and then explore three cases of architectural dedication at Paquimé: the Mound of the Serpent, a pot under a water reservoir, and a central support post within the structure. These cases reflect the use of the architecture to help ensure access to water, which in turn helped Paquimé's elites establish their city as preeminent in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author reflects on the negative consequences of innovations on the sacred liturgy. These include the disappearance of genuflection as a Catholic gesture, the sight of the consecration and the use of colors white and violet for masses for the dead. He also discusses a bishop order that there should be no communion on the tongue and shaking of hands to prevent the spread of influenza and the unintended consequences of the choice of sacred music.

The impact of academic boredom on learning and achievement has received increasing attention in the literature; however, the questions of how academic boredom changes over time and how the change relates to antecedents of boredom and student engagement during a course of study remain unexplored. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to: (a) examine the patterns of change in two types of academic boredom (i.e., learning-related and class-related) and in four types of student engagement (i.e., vigor, absorption, dedication, and effort regulation); (b) to examine how the trajectories of boredom and student engagement relate to one another; and (c) to investigate the relationship between perceived autonomy support and the pattern of change in boredom, in a sample of 144 university students. Results of latent growth curve analysis showed that learning-related boredom, vigor, and absorption remained relatively stable over time, whereas both class-related boredom and effort regulation showed a linear change, a pattern of increase and a trend of decrease, respectively. Interestingly, students' dedication decreased at the beginning and increased when approaching the end of the course. Our results also revealed the fact that changes in boredom in class were linked with changes in both effort regulation and dedication, and the inverse association between perceived autonomy support and class-related boredom experience. The article looks at the Pentagon Group Burial Marker, a memorial for victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in Arlington Memorial National Cemetery, Virginia. Particular focus is given to the memorial's symbolic functions as related to U.S. military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan following the attacks. According to the author, the monument and its dedication service were used by the U.S. government to justify the Iraq and Afghan wars. Details related to the history of the cemetery, including its role as the location of a community of former slaves known as Freedman's Village, are presented. Abstract: This paper analyzes how cultural classification has changed, during the period 1970–2007, in France, Germany and the United States for one particular case: fiction book bestseller lists. Drawing on recent studies in the material production (the publishing field) and symbolic production (the literary field) of literature, I examine the impact of the market logic and cultural consecration on the content of bestseller lists by (a) mapping trends, (b) comparing countries and (c) conducting multivariate analyses. To do so, I offer a nested, multilevel approach that attends to producers, authors and product types. The results show that, in all three countries, authors who have properties that signal the market logic become more dominant, while retrospectively consecrated authors less often make the lists. This trend is stronger for the US than for Germany and France. The differences between the latter two countries decline over time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The archaeological evidence of more than a dozen ancient shipwrecks indicates that the tradition of placing a coin inside the mast-step of a ship's hold probably originated with the Romans. The mast-step coin phenomenon, which persisted through the Middle Ages and continues in various forms today, has often been characterized according to the modern concept of ‘luck’. The purpose of this study is to integrate and extend career development theory by focusing on the metaphor of "calling." In order to understand the impact of calling narratives on organizational life, I analyze how students understand and construct the meaning of work at a small Christian liberal arts college in the eastern United States. The study identified three themes in which religious and entrepreneurial discourses compete and collide: 1) the meaning of inner conviction; 2) the meaning of service, 3) the meaning of corporate. By incorporating the integrative concept of discursive positioning, this study alerts us to a more nuanced understanding of the tensions and contradictions that arise in and through calling narratives. This article provides information on the Read House dedication activities in Fort Worth, Texas on September 23 to 24, 2005. It was held to celebrate the new headquarters for the Institute of General Semantics (IGS). The event includes a reception and meeting for board members of the IGS. Bruce Kodish and Susan Presby-Kodish traced the involvement of Allen Walker and Charlotte Read in general semantics and shared anecdotes and remembrances of the late couple, whom the facility is named.

Jerome's three exercises in hagiography, his Paul, Malchus, and Hilarion, as printed in our standard editions, lack dedications. The manuscript tradition, however, reveals a special (possibly first) edition of the Hilarion explicitly dedicated to the ascetic Roman woman Asella. The present study reviews the nature of the pertinent manuscript evidence, identifies the discovery of the dedication in the early seventeenth century, and then discusses the dedication's loss from scholarly sight (and why it was lost), until its rediscovery by a graduate student at the University of Illinois in the 1930s. Recent trends toward early intervention and mainstreaming have resulted in a growing number of preschool programs that integrate retarded and nonretarded children. These programs are generally based on the assumption that nonhandicapped peers function as behavioral models and/or reinforcing agents for handicapped youngsters within the context of positive social interaction. However, a review of relevant empirical literature indicates that such benefits do not necessarily result from integrated programing. This article discusses the implications of recent studies that have investigated procedures for structuring peer imitation and peer reinforcement at the preschool age level. Specific suggestions are offered for maximizing the potential benefits of integrated early childhood programs. Additionally, recommendations are made concerning research needs in this area.
