Abstract

Institutions worldwide call for joint actions of multiple actors in partnerships to accelerate the transitions towards sustainable food systems and reach food security for everybody, allways. This requires insights into co-creating processes. Here, 52 European food system cases are analyzed. A methodology based on the game structure is used that permits standardizing data collection and extracting generic and cases-specific findings. Game building blocks correspond with key elements of co-creation processes, like defining mutually accepted objectives, engaging in types of activities, and efficient use of resources, boundary conditions, timings, and scales of operations. Results further indicate that different types of inclusive partnerships emerge, in which especially innovative private, including smallholders, and academic actors cocreate value, all contributing to sustainability. The public and civil society actors emerge as important initiators, enablers, and organizers of scales of interaction, allowing generating snowball effects. Findings lead to an adapted concept for co-creating partnerships in food systems and recommendations for the European Partnership on sustainable food systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The European candidate Partnership Sustainable Food Systems [1] focuses on the needed transition towards sustainable food systems (SFS) via system approaches [2]. However, this makes only sense if we understand what sustainable food systems are and how they function. Sustainability is defined as ‘whatever we do, we should not compromise future generations’ (Brundtland report, 1987). Hence, SFS are systems that have the capacity to endlessly evolve, continuously providing affordable, safe, healthy, delicious, functional foods for all people in their various cultural settings, and produced in an environmental-friendly manner. This is what the Partnership SFS strives for in all Europe regions, by changing the way (what) we eat, how we process and supply, how we connect ourselves to food systems, and how we govern them [1]. The implications for new developments in Food Science and Technology (FST) are numerous. First, these target an efficient usage and reusage of biomass in time (in our open thermodynamic planetary system fuelled by solar energy). Secondly, the handling of all diverse resources and food products respects both upper and lower limits for all environmental, social, economic and health indicators. Third, food process-structure-function relationships are considered in robust and performing food systems from a broader perspective. This includes playing fields (context), players (food actors), pieces (resources, products, waste, services), moves (food chain activities), rules (food laws, incentives…), duration (e.g. in terms of renewing resources) and outcomes (win/lose); i.e. the seven building blocks of a game [3]. Several case studies are presented that provide new research questions for the future Partnership and serve to exchange insights in FST with Central and Eastern European Countries.

Early in life and particularly around weaning, piglets are susceptible to infections because of abrupt social, environmental, and dietary changes. Dietary interventions with probiotic bacteria have gained popularity because of the increased awareness of the direct link between diet and health. In this study, piglets received the probiotic strain Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) or a control treatment perorally from day 2 after birth until 2 weeks post-weaning. To investigate spatio-temporal effects of EcN on the gut microbiota composition, intestinal epithelial gene expression and immune system, feces, digesta, blood, scraping material and mesenteric lymph node tissue were collected at different time points. In addition, oral vaccinations against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium were administered on days 21 and 45 of the study to assess the immunocompetence. EcN-treated pigs showed a reduced diversity of taxa within the phylum Proteobacteria and a lower relative abundance of taxa within the genus Treponema during the pre-weaning period. Moreover, EcN induced T cell proliferation and Natural Killer cell activation in blood and enhanced IL-10 production in ex vivo stimulated mesenteric lymph node cells, the latter pointing toward a more regulatory or anti-inflammatory state of the local gut-associated immune system. These outcomes were primarily observed pre-weaning. No significant differences were observed between the treatment groups with regards to body weight, epithelial gene expression, and immune response upon vaccination. Differences observed during the post-weaning period between the treatment groups were modest. Overall, this study demonstrates that the pre-weaning period offers a ‘window of opportunity’ to modulate the porcine gut microbiota and immune system through dietary interventions such as EcN supplementation.

Abstract

Saprophagous fly larvae interact with a rich community of bacteria in decomposing organic matter. Larvae of some species, such as the black soldier fly, can process a wide range of organic residual streams into edible insect biomass and thus produce protein as a sustainable component of livestock feed. The microbiological safety of the insects and substrates remains a point of concern. Substrate-associated bacteria can dominate the larval gut microbiota, but the larvae can also alter the bacterial community in the substrate. However, the relative importance of substrate type and larval density in bacterial community dynamics is unknown. We investigated four larval densities (0 [control], 50, 100, or 200 larvae per container [520 mL; diameter, 75 mm]) and three feed substrates (chicken feed, chicken manure, and camelina substrate [50% chicken feed, 50% camelina oilseed press cake]) and sampled the bacterial communities of the substrates and larvae at three time points over 15 days. Although feed substrate was the strongest driver of microbiota composition over time, larval density significantly altered the relative abundances of several common bacterial genera, including potential pathogens, in each substrate and in larvae fed chicken feed. Bacterial communities of the larvae and substrate differed to a higher degree in chicken manure and camelina than in chicken feed. This supports the substrate-dependent impact of black soldier fly larvae on bacteria both within the larvae and in the substrate. This study indicates that substrate composition and larval density can alter bacterial community composition and might be used to improve insect microbiological safety.

Abstract

Feather pecking (FP), a damaging behavior where laying hens peck and pull at feathers of conspecifics, is multifactorial and has been linked to numerous behavioral and physiological characteristics. The gut microbiota has been shown to influence host behavior and physiology in many species, and could therefore affect the development of damaging behaviors, such as FP. Yet, it is unknown whether FP genotypes (high FP [HFP] and low FP [LFP] lines) or FP phenotypes (i.e., individuals differing in FP, feather peckers and neutrals) differ in their gut microbiota composition. Therefore, we identified mucosa-associated microbiota composition of the ileum and cecum at 10 and 30 wk of age. At 30 wk of age, we further identified luminal microbiota composition from combined content of the ileum, ceca, and colon. FP phenotypes could not be distinguished from each other in mucosa-associated or luminal microbiota composition. However, HFP neutrals were characterized by a higher relative abundance of genera of Clostridiales, but lower relative abundance of Lactobacillus for the luminal microbiota composition compared to LFP phenotypes. Furthermore, HFP neutrals had a higher diversity and evenness for the luminal microbiota compared to LFP phenotypes. FP genotypes could not be distinguished from each other in mucosa-associated microbiota composition. Yet, FP genotypes could be distinguished from each other in luminal microbiota composition. HFP birds were characterized by a higher relative abundance of genera of Clostridiales, but lower relative abundance of Staphylococcus and Lactobacillus compared to LFP birds. Furthermore, HFP birds had a higher diversity and evenness for both cecal mucosa-associated and luminal microbiota compared to LFP birds at adult age. In conclusion, we here show that divergent selection on FP can (in)directly affect luminal microbiota composition. Whether differences in microbiota composition are causal to FP or a consequence of FP remains to be elucidated.

Abstract

Piglets are susceptible to infections in early life and around weaning due to rapid environmental and dietary changes. A compelling target to improve pig health in early life is diet, as it constitutes a pivotal determinant of gut microbial colonization and maturation of the host&rsquo, s immune system. In the present study, we investigated how supplementation of yeast-derived &beta, glucans affects the gut microbiota and immune function pre- and post-weaning, and how these complex systems develop over time. From day two after birth until two weeks after weaning, piglets received yeast-derived &beta, glucans or a control treatment orally and were subsequently vaccinated against Salmonella Typhimurium. Faeces, digesta, blood, and tissue samples were collected to study gut microbiota composition and immune function. Overall, yeast-derived &beta, glucans did not affect the vaccination response, and only modest effects on faecal microbiota composition and immune parameters were observed, primarily before weaning. This study demonstrates that the pre-weaning period offers a &lsquo, window of opportunity&rsquo, to alter the gut microbiota and immune system through diet. However, the observed changes were modest, and any long-lasting effects of yeast-derived &beta, glucans remain to be elucidated.

Larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF) can be used to convert organic waste into insect biomass for animal feed. In this process, they interact with microorganisms originating from the substrate, the insect, and the environment. The substrate is the main determinant of the larval gut microbiota composition, but inoculation of the substrate with egg-associated bacteria can improve larval performance. We aimed to quantify the relative importance of substrate-associated and egg-associated microorganisms on BSF larval performance, bacterial abundance, and microbiota composition, when larvae were fed with chicken feed or chicken manure. For this we inactivated substrate-associated microorganisms by autoclaving, or disinfected BSF eggs. Larval survival rate, weight, and proportion of prepupae were determined on day 15. We collected substrate and larval samples on days 0 and 15 and performed 16S rRNA gene targeted qPCR and amplicon sequencing. In both chicken feed and chicken manure, egg disinfection did not cause any difference in larval performance or overall microbiota composition. In contrast, in chicken manure, substrate-associated microorganisms increased larval biomass and autoclaving caused major shifts in microbiota. Thus, substrate-associated microorganisms not only impact the larval microbiota but also larval performance, whereas egg-associated microorganisms have a minor role in the densities present.

Abstract

Background: Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae are used as a sustainable component of animal feed, because they can convert a wide range of organic waste types into insect biomass. In the decomposing substrate, they interact with a rich microbial community of bacteria and fungi, which strongly depends on the type of substrate. These microorganisms may impact larval performance, whereas the larvae themselves can alter substrate properties and bacterial communities – an impact that is enhanced as larvae aggregate. However, the relative importance of substrate type and larval density on bacterial community dynamics is unknown. We investigated four larval densities (0 (control), 50, 100, or 200 larvae per container (520 ml, Ø 75 mm)) and three feed substrates (chicken feed, chicken manure, and camelina oilseed press cake) and sampled bacterial communities of substrates and larvae at three time points over 15 days.Results: We found that BSF larvae altered bacterial community composition over time, in all three feed substrates and that substrate type was the strongest driver of bacterial successioncommunity composition. The impact of the larvae depended on substrate and larval density, which was possibly related to substrate nutritional value, foraging behaviour, and larval performance. Larval and substrate microbiota differed for chicken manure and camelina, whereas they overlapped in chicken feed.Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the flexibility of the association between bacteria and BSF larvae and support the substrate-dependent impact of BSF larvae on bacteria both within the larvae and in the substrate. This study indicates that bacterial community composition and possibly insect microbiological safety can be manipulated through substrate composition and larval density.
