Abstract Reconstructions of ocean oxygenation are critical for understanding the role of respired carbon storage in regulating atmospheric CO2. Independent sediment redox proxies are essential to assess such reconstructions. Here, we present a long magnetofossil record from the eastern Indian Ocean in which we observe coeval magnetic hardening and enrichment of larger, more elongated, and less oxidized magnetofossils during glacials compared to interglacials over the last ~900 ka. Our multi-proxy records of redox-sensitive magnetofossils, trace element concentrations, and benthic foraminiferal Δδ13C consistently suggest a recurrence of lower O2 in the glacial Indian Ocean over the last 21 marine isotope stages, as has been reported for the Atlantic and Pacific across the last glaciation. Consistent multi-proxy documentation of this repeated oxygen decline strongly supports the hypothesis that increased Indian Ocean glacial carbon storage played a significant role in atmospheric CO2 cycling and climate change over recent glacial/interglacial timescales.

Close examination of key and well-dated Holocene sites, both on land and at sea in the Australian region indicates that at the very beginning of the Holocene, as a result of strong westerlies, there must have been a continuous positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Following from that, the entire region switched to a negative SAM scenario and, during that time, the westerlies must have retreated further south. Afterwards, a period of time spaning ∼8200 to ∼5500 years ago temperatures were higher than today. We refer to it as the Holocene Hyspithermal. Coincident to this period, lake levels and postulated rainfall were extraordinarily high and vegetation spectra in places very different compared to today. The extent of this period varies by a few centuries between sites, but this may result from the level of resolution and also appears to be controlled by latitude. There is also clear indication that the influence of the westerlies was reduced over Australia during those two and a half millennia.Nevertheless, air temperatures recognised in Antarctic ice cores are at the opposite to those recognised in Australia. In addition, during the Australian Holocene Hypsithermal, CO2 levels were at their lowest in Antarctic ice cores.Climatic conditions then progressively deteriorated everywhere a bit after ∼6000 years BP until recent times as ENSO signals with alternating El Niño and La Niña conditions across the entire Pacific region as already described by Perner et al. (2018) based on the same cores studied here.Brief mention is also made to the presence of humans in SE Australia during the Holocene. It seems that human activities changed well after the period of high temperatures and rainfall, with more sedentary activities along the major rivers, with an enhancement of food production in organized settings suggestive of villages.

For a school counsellor or classroom teacher, working with newly arrived students from refugee backgrounds can be daunting, particularly with the awareness that these students have likely experienced significant and potentially horrific trauma. There is now a wealth of evidence showing that traumatic experiences can significantly impact our neurological development, resulting in difficulties in areas such as learning, behaviour, relationship building and emotion regulation, meaning newly arrived refugee students will often arrive at school with some significant challenges. While there is an extensive amount of literature on trauma, there is very little that focuses specifically on the refugee population, and even less on young people from refugee backgrounds. Predominantly, the research looks at chronic or developmental trauma such as child abuse and neglect, or acute trauma such as natural disasters. The following article looks at the refugee context specifically, breaking down the difference between acute, chronic and developmental trauma; and describing the neurological effects of trauma and suggesting some practical classroom-based strategies that can be employed to support and facilitate the recovery of students from refugee backgrounds.

We report on rare earth element and neodymium isotopic compositions in a series of grain-size fractions separated from river suspended matter in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) and a nearby marine sediment core (MD03-2607) offshore south-eastern Australia. This source-to-sink approach was used to further investigate the extent to which sediment sorting may control the geochemistry of suspended loads in rivers, and to provide constraints on the source of the detrital sediment material exported to the ocean. Our results provide further compelling evidence that significant size-dependent geochemical decoupling can occur in river systems, accounting here for Nd isotopic (εNd) differences of up to eight epsilon-units between silt (>25 μm) and colloidal (0.2−0.006 μm; 0.006−0.003 μm) fractions. All suspended particulate samples from the River Murray watershed display a trend toward more radiogenic (higher εNd) Nd signatures with decreasing grain-size, in addition to differing REE signatures, which collectively point toward a preferential volcanogenic origin for the fine-grained inorganic particles transported by MDB rivers. Furthermore, we show that the same river-borne volcanogenic material dominates in the fine-grained detrital fractions extracted from core MD03-2607 at the south-eastern Australian margin; a finding corroborated by REE signatures in a series of copepod fecal pellet separates from the same core. Collectively, our results suggest that river sediment discharge is accompanied by preferential export of fine-grained volcanogenic particles to the ocean. This potential source of bioavailable trace metals and nutrients in ocean surface waters could impact marine productivity.

Stable isotope (18O/16O and 13C/12C) and minor-element compositions (Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios) of ostracodes and gastropods separated from marsh sediments from San Francisco Bay, Northern California, were used to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes in Petaluma Marsh over the past 700 yr. The value of d18O in the marsh carbonates reflects changes in freshwater inflow, evaporation, and temperature. Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca in ostracode calcite reflect changes in both freshwater inflow and temperature, although primarily reflect temperature changes in the salinity range of about 10-35 o/oo. Ostracode d18O values show a gradual increase by 5 o/oo between 500 yr BR and the present, probably reflecting rising sea level and increased evaporation in the marsh. Superimposed on this trend are higher frequency Mg/Ca and d18O variations (3-4 o/oo), probably reflecting changes in freshwater inflow and evaporation. A period of low Mg/Ca occurred between about 100-300 cal yr BR, suggesting wetter and cooler conditions during the Little Ice Age. Higher Mg/Ca ratios occurred 600-700 cal yr BR, indicating drier and warmer conditions during the end of the Medieval Warm Period. Both ostracode and gastropod d13C values decrease up-core, reflecting decomposition of marsh vegetation, which changes from C4 (d13C ~; -12 o/oo) to CAM (d13C = -26 o/oo)-type vegetation over time.

The Belgica expedition, which left Belgium in August 1897, was the first to spend 13 months continuously in Antarctic waters, before returning in late 1899. This was not only an exploratory venture, as new lands and oceans were charted, but more importantly it was an exceptional and successful scientific voyage. After the return of the expedition, a vast array of scientific data was processed and eventually 92 publications in some nine volumes funded by the Belgica Commission appeared over 40 years as a series called Résultats du voyage de la Belgica en 1897–99 sous le commandement de A. de Gerlache de Gomery – rapports scientifiques. Disappointingly, those significant results have been mostly ignored in the scientific literature and the paper here aims to inform scientists of the achievements of the Belgica expedition and where to obtain the information. Many of the climatological and oceanographic data obtained by the expeditioners ought to be examined in line with the changes that are occurring today in the Antarctic Peninsula region as a result of global warming. Some of the Belgica data form an important database to critically assess environmental changes over 120 years in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Ostracods belonging to the genus Bennelongia differ much in valve morphology between adults and juveniles. Adult valves are asymmetrical, characterised by a beak-like feature in the antero-ventral region of the left valve, and, with some notable exceptions, mostly have smooth or weakly-ornamented valves. Juvenile specimens, on the other hand, have valves that are almost symmetrical, with no beak-like feature and are often heavily ornamented. We have examined the last 3 - 4 juvenile stages of 6 Bennelongia species from 5 different lineages, in order to decipher the types of external valve ornamentation and their recurrences during ontogeny and across lineages. It is clear that ornamentation is more prevalent at the early instar stages compared to the last 2 pre-adult stages, and especially when compared to the adult stage itself. We also examined the surprising presence of a calcified inner lamella with a prominent inner list in the pre-adult stages of Bennelongia species, that is usually absent in juveniles of other ostracods, thus questioning if heterochronic processes have provided an intermediate valve morphology between the simple (normal) cypridinid juvenile state and the heavily derived and modified state of adult Bennelongia. We discuss the possible (speculative) functionality of the ornamentation in juveniles.

We present a Rare Earth Elements (REE) record determined on the EPICA ice core drilled at Dronning Maud Land (EDML) in the Atlantic sector of the East Antarctic Plateau. The record covers the transition from the last glacial stage (LGS) to the early Holocene (26 600–7500 yr BP) at decadal to centennial resolution. Additionally, samples from potential source areas (PSAs) for Antarctic dust were analyzed for their REE characteristics. The dust provenance is discussed by comparing the REE fingerprints in the ice core and the PSA samples. We find a shift in variability in REE composition at ~15 000 yr BP in the ice core samples. Before 15 000 yr BP, the dust composition is very uniform and its provenance was most certainly dominated by a South American source. After 15 000 yr BP, multiple sources such as Australia and New Zealand become relatively more important, although South America remains the major dust source. A similar change in the dust characteristics was observed in the EPICA Dome C ice core at around ~15 000 yr BP, accompanied by a shift in the REE composition, thus suggesting a change of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere.

The morphology and development of several submarine canyons offshore southeast South Australia and western Victoria are described. The existence of three of those canyons had been foreshadowed in 1963 by N. Boutakoff, who thought them to be linked to ancient courses of the Glenelg River. These canyons occur on the outer continental shelf where their heads are situated in depths shallower than 1000 m. Sinuous channels are visible within two of the canyon heads, indicating that water and sediment may still travel downslope and cause erosion, and thus are geologically recent. Several other canyons are also documented and named. Two canyons are confined to depths below 3000 m; they may be much older and seem not to be linked to ancient river courses. They are also oblique to the upper canyons. The other characteristic feature of the area is the presence of numerous undersea slides. These occur at three specific depths (∼1200, ∼1500 and ∼1800 m) and are coincident with stratigraphic horizons in which continental groundwater flows have been identified in adjacent exploratory oil and gas wells drilled into the continental shelf. Sapping of groundwater may likely have occurred during very wet periods inland. We suggest that these undersea slides could be the first step in the formation of deep-sea canyons that are not necessarily linked to ancient river courses. We also postulate that the 'sliding' of large piles of sediment down the continental slope has tsunamigenic potential and may have occurred during significant wet climate on land. Several deep-sea canyons and numerous submarine slides are documented along the continental shelf offshore the coastline of western Victoria and southeast South Australia in the Otway Basin. Some of these canyons are linked to previous courses of the Glenelg River, which changed over time in response to regional tectonic changes such as faulting and significant upwarping. The orientation of most of these canyons tends to align with ancient terrestrial lineaments that likely extend offshore. Sinuous channels within the upper canyon reaches are clearly visible and not infilled with sediment; they are likely active and linked to ongoing groundwater seepage. It is proposed that the underwater slides are generated by the submarine discharge of continental groundwater on the continental slope, at three specific water depths with discharge associated with particular lithologies. These slides may still be active. Superimposed slides may engender the formation of new canyons. The volume of some of these undersea slides is of tsunamigenic scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
