The continuous record offered by deep-sea sediments has been extensively used to constrain shifting continental and oceanographic conditions. Yet, past fluctuations in deep-sea benthic conditions and bottom-currents are in numerous parts of the globe scarcely documented, one such example being the South Australian margin. Indeed, though variations in surface water masses and continental aeolian dust and river outflow are well documented in the area, little is known about benthic environments and their dynamics during the last interglacial-glacial cycle. We focus here on benthic foraminiferal assemblages sampled from a sediment core recovered at 2420 m depth from a small plateau south of Kangaroo Island within the underwater Murray Canyons Group (South Australian margin). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages show a distinct separation between interglacial and glacial periods over the last 94 ka, and indicate that the benthic environment was well-ventilated and oligotrophic during glacial periods, whilst being rather marked by reduced oxygenation associated to higher food input during the Holocene and Marine Isotope Stage 5a-c. We demonstrate that autochtonous deep-sea benthic foraminiferal communities neither respond to changes in the Murray River's discharges, nor do they follow variations in aeolian dust input from South Australia. Instead, the deep-sea and the terrestrial realm appear decoupled. Moreover, our observations suggest that bottom-water slope currents were stronger during the Holocene and Marine Isotope Stage 5a-c. We propose that this strengthening was triggered by an intensification of the poleward-circulating deep eastern boundary current transporting carbon-rich Indian Deep Water. In contrast, glacial seafloor conditions, especially during the Last Glacial Maximum, may reflect a greater influence and a shoaling of oxygen-rich Antarctic Bottom Water of South Australia. Palaeoceanographic conditions in the eastern Indian Ocean for the last ~30 kyr are documented by means of planktonic foraminiferal analyses of 10 gravity cores. Quantitative foraminiferal analysis (%), Q-mode factor analysis, the modern analog technique (MAT) and oxygen-isotope analyses are used. A conspicuous increase during the last glacial maximum (LGM) of foraminiferal fragmentation resulting from a more productive Java upwelling system and/or a more corrosive Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) was found at intermediate water depths (~1000 m). Contrasting Q-mode factors based on foraminifera between today and the LGM suggest changes in the thermocline depth, sea-surface temperature (SST), upwelling, and the strength of both the Australasian Mediterranean Water (AAMW) and the Indian Central Water (ICW). The decrease in the percentage abundance of shallow-dwelling and symbiont-bearing planktonic foraminifera, the increase in percentage of the upwelling-related species Globorotalia cultrata and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, and factor 3 (dominated by Globorotalia tumida and Globigerinella siphonifera) suggest a stronger Java upwelling system during the LGM. A steeper, steric latitudinal gradient (in the presence of a weak Leeuwin Current), and a geostrophic flow similar to today's is postulated for the LGM, and this must have prevented upwelling offshore Western Australia. Today's AAMW-ICW sharp front was weaker during the LGM when the AAMW was saltier, cooler, and nutrient richer and more similar to the ICW. During the LGM, a more gentle SST latitudinal gradient over the ~16 to ~23°S region contrasts with today's steeper conditions at the AAMW-ICW Front. Also, for the LGM, a nutrient-rich ICW may explain previously documented increases in mass accumulation rates of CaCO3, organic carbon and benthonic foraminifera in a region where the nutricline was deep and within the lower euphotic zone.

The southwest Pacific Ocean covers a broad range of surface-water conditions ranging from warm, salty water in the subtropical East Australian Current to fresher, cold water in the Circumpolar Current. Using a new database of planktonic foraminifera assemblages (AUSMAT-F2), we demonstrate that the modern analog technique can be used to accurately reconstruct the magnitude of sea-surfacetemperature (SST) in this region. We apply this technique to data from 29 deep-sea cores along a meridional transect of the southwest Pacific Ocean to estimate the magnitude of SST cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum. We find minimal cooling in the tropics (0°-2°C), moderate cooling in the subtropical midlatitudes (2°-6°C), and maximum cooling to the southeast of New Zealand (6°-10°C). The magnitude of cooling at the sea surface from the tropics to the temperate latitudes is found to generally be less than cooling at the surface of adjacent land masses. We present fossil benthic foraminiferal assemblage data from marine sediment core SS02/06-GC2 located in the abyssal plain of the Murray Canyon Group (offshore South Australia). The sedimentological characteristics indicate the presence of turbidite deposits showing classical Bouma-like sequences, dated between ~40 and 12 cal ka BP. These results confirm the previous interpretation of the observed large deep-water holes in the abyssal area where the core was sampled as being gouged by surges of high-energy turbidity currents. The presence of good indicator taxa and unique assemblages occupying specific bathymetric depths allows the determination of the source origin of the sediments making the turbidites. Three distinct faunal groups are found: 1) mostly shelf species, 2) mostly bathyal species and 3) mostly abyssal species. In the sediment core, these groups present a quasi-systematic succession, with nearly all Bouma-like sequences starting with the dominance of bathyal species in the coarse-grained base, followed by the dominance of shallow species in the silty part, and finally with abyssal species in the clays. To explain such phenomena, turbidites triggered by mixed hyperpycnal/hypopycnal flow processes and turbidity currents during periods of river floods are considered for the first time within the Murray Canyon Group. They are mostly related to periods of increased fluvial discharges during wet phases in the Murray-Darling Basin.

2020 Elsevier Ltd The Quaternary is well known for being a period of the geological record that saw significant and alternating climatic fluctuations. Here, we concentrate on the last 94 millennia that saw Australia and its surrounding seas undergo significant environmental changes. Importantly also it is during that this period of time includes the arrival and settlement of humans in Australia. Following on from Marine Isotopic Stage 4 (MIS4) that saw, over the period of 71-59 ka BP, a significant eustatic sea level drop (∼100 m), low sea-surface temperatures as well as glacial conditions on land, Australia experienced wet conditions again, but eventually progressively entered into a glacial phase. By then, humans had arrived on this large continent and later the megafauna progressively became extinct. This paper describes in detail the climate over this period, based principally on the high-resolution record of two marine sediment cores located offshore of the southern Australian margin, and that are then compared with known events on land as well as other deep-sea cores. Particular emphasis is placed on the period that spans the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the extent of which thus far had been poorly defined in the Australian region. Emphasis is placed on the period from 34 to 14 ka to demonstrate that (1) the LGM, defined here as the period 24 to 18 ka, was not always extremely dry and cold, and (2) that people were able to live in inland Australia as water existed in places, despite generally cold conditions. We also show using a series of ten maps - at 2 ka intervals over the 34-14 ka period - the waxing and waning of oceanic fronts such as the Subtropical and Subantarctic Fronts, link sea-surface temperatures (SST) with periods of glacial expansion in the Australian Alps and Tasmania, as well as the South Island of New Zealand, and the extent of the Leeuwin Current down to south of Australia. New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the Northern Hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased frequency of large rainfall events. We associate the observed large‐scale fluctuations in Australian aridity with variations in Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures, which largely control the monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia.

We present an array of new proxy data and review existing ones from core Fr1/94-GC3 from the East Tasman Plateau. This core is positioned at the southern extreme of the East Australia Current and simultaneously records changes in both oceanography and environments both in offshore and in southeastern Australia. Microfossils, including planktonic and benthic foraminifera, ostracods, coccoliths and radiolarians, were studied to interpret palaeo-oceanographic changes. Sea-surface temperature was estimated using planktonic foraminifera, alkenones and radiolaria. From the silicate sediment fraction, the mean grain size of quartz grains was measured to detect the changes in wind strength. An XRF scan of the entire core was used to determine the elemental composition to identify provenance of the sediment. We also compare these data with a pollen record from the same core provided in an accompanying article that provides the longest well-dated record of vegetation change in southeastern Australia. In an area of slow sedimentation, Fr1/94-GC3 provides a continuous record of change in southeastern Australia and the southern Tasman Sea over approximately the last 460 ka. We determine that the East Australian Current varied in intensity through time and did not reach the core site during glacial periods but was present east of Tasmania during all interglacial periods. The four glacial–interglacial periods recorded at the site vary distinctly in character, with Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9 being the warmest and MIS 5 the longest. Through time, glacial periods have progressively become warmer and shorter. Deposition of airborne dust at the core site is more substantial during interglacial periods than glacials and is believed to derive from mainland Australia and not Tasmania. It is likely that the source and direction of the dust plume varied significantly with the wind regimes between glacials and interglacials as mean effective precipitation changed.
