1. Statistical Validation of Column Matching in the Database Schema Evolution of the Brazilian Public School Census

Abstract

Publicly available datasets are subject to new versions, with each new version potentially reflecting changes to the data. These changes may involve adding or removing attributes, changing data types, and modifying values or their semantics. Integrating these datasets into a database poses a significant challenge: how to keep track of the evolving database schema while incorporating different versions of the data sources? This paper presents a statistical methodology to validate the integration of 12 years of open-access datasets from Brazil's School Census, with a new version of the datasets released annually by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). We employ various statistical tests to find matching attributes between datasets from a specific year and their potential equivalents in datasets from later years. The results show that by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test we can successfully match columns from different dataset versions in about 90% of cases., Comment: Accepted for presentation at the Simposio Brasileiro de Bancos de Dados (SBBD) 2024

Abstract

Data normalization is an essential task when modeling a classification system. When dealing with data streams, data normalization becomes especially challenging since we may not know in advance the properties of the features, such as their minimum/maximum values, and these properties may change over time. We compare the accuracies generated by eight well-known distance functions in data streams without normalization, normalized considering the statistics of the first batch of data received, and considering the previous batch received. We argue that experimental protocols for streams that consider the full stream as normalized are unrealistic and can lead to biased and poor results. Our results indicate that using the original data stream without applying normalization, and the Canberra distance, can be a good combination when no information about the data stream is known beforehand., Comment: Paper accepted to the 2023 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks

Abstract

Smart-parking solutions use sensors, cameras, and data analysis to improve parking efficiency and reduce traffic congestion. Computer vision-based methods have been used extensively in recent years to tackle the problem of parking lot management, but most of the works assume that the parking spots are manually labeled, impacting the cost and feasibility of deployment. To fill this gap, this work presents an automatic parking space detection method, which receives a sequence of images of a parking lot and returns a list of coordinates identifying the detected parking spaces. The proposed method employs instance segmentation to identify cars and, using vehicle occurrence, generate a heat map of parking spaces. The results using twelve different subsets from the PKLot and CNRPark-EXT parking lot datasets show that the method achieved an AP25 score up to 95.60\% and AP50 score up to 79.90\%., Comment: Accepted for presentation at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2023)

5. Noise correlations behind superdiffusive quantum walks

Abstract

We study how discrete-time quantum walks behave under short-range correlated noise. By considering noise as a source of inhomogeneity of quantum gates, we introduce a primitive relaxation in the uncorrelated stochastic noise assumption: binary pair correlations manifesting in the random distribution. Considering different quantum gates, we examined the transport properties for both spatial and temporal noise regimes. For spatial inhomogeneities, we show noise correlations driving quantum walks from the well-known exponentially localized condition to superdiffusive spreading. This scenario displays an exciting performance in which the superdiffusive exponent is almost invariant to the inhomogeneity degree. The time-asymptotic regime and the finite-size scaling also unveil an emergent superdiffusive behavior for quantum walks undergoing temporal noise correlation, replacing the diffusive regime exhibited when noise is random and uncorrelated. However, results report some quantum gates insensitive to correlations, contrasting with the spatial noise scenario. Abstract

When using vision-based approaches to classify individual parking spaces between occupied and empty, human experts often need to annotate the locations and label a training set containing images collected in the target parking lot to fine-tune the system. We propose investigating three annotation types (polygons, bounding boxes, and fixed-size squares), providing different data representations of the parking spaces. The rationale is to elucidate the best trade-off between handcraft annotation precision and model performance. We also investigate the number of annotated parking spaces necessary to fine-tune a pre-trained model in the target parking lot. Experiments using the PKLot dataset show that it is possible to fine-tune a model to the target parking lot with less than 1,000 labeled samples, using low precision annotations such as fixed-size squares., Comment: Work submitted to be published on IEEE IJCNN 2022 / WCCI 2022 (July/22)

Abstract

The speed and scale of the global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented pressures on health services worldwide, requiring new methods of service delivery during the health crisis. In the setting of severe resource constraint and high risk of infection to patients and clinicians, there is an urgent need to identify consensus statements on head and neck surgical oncology practice. We completed a modified Delphi consensus process of three rounds with 40 international experts in head and neck cancer surgical, radiation, and medical oncology, representing 35 international professional societies and national clinical trial groups. Endorsed by 39 societies and professional bodies, these consensus practice recommendations aim to decrease inconsistency of practice, reduce uncertainty in care, and provide reassurance for clinicians worldwide for head and neck surgical oncology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the setting of acute severe resource constraint and high risk of infection to patients and staff.

Abstract

The extended Frank elastic energy density is used to investigate the existence of a stable periodically modulate structure that appears as a ground state exhibiting a twist-bend molecular arrangement. For an unbounded sample, we show that the twist-bend nematic phase $N_{TB}$ is characterized by a heliconical structure with a pitch in the nano-metric range, in agreement with experimental results. For a sample of finite thickness, we show that the wave vector of the stable periodic structure depends not only on the elastic parameters but also on the anchoring energy, easy axis direction, and the thickness of the sample., Comment: 11 pages

Abstract

Evolutionary dynamics experienced by mixed microbial populations of cooperators and cheaters has been examined in experiments in the literature using a protocol of periodic dilution to investigate the properties of resilience and adaptability to environmental changes. Data depicted on an appropriate phase diagram indicate, among other features, a stable equilibrium point at which cooperators and cheaters coexist [A. Sanchez, J. Gore, PLOs Biology, 11 (4), e1001547 (2013)]. We present here a phenomenological analysis of these data focusing on an eco-evolutionary-game perspective. To that end, we work on an extension of the model proposed by Tao and Cressman Y. Tao, R. Cressman, Bull. Math. Biol. 69, 1377 - 1399 (2007). It's original version takes into account changes of the total population density while the individuals experience pairwise Prisoner's Dilemma game. The extension devised here contains a dilution factor to be conform with the experimental procedure, in addition of a term accounting for Allee effects. Differently from other descriptions proposed in similar contexts, however, the model here does not account for assortative encounters, group or kin selection. Nonetheless, it describes surprisingly well both qualitatively and quantitatively the features of the observed phase diagram. We discuss these results in terms of the behavior of an effective payoff matrix defined accordingly.

27. Length of Stay Prediction Models for Oral Cancer Surgery: Machine Learning, Statistical and ACS‐NSQIP.

Abstract

Objective: Accurate prediction of hospital length of stay (LOS) following surgical management of oral cavity cancer (OCC) may be associated with improved patient counseling, hospital resource utilization and cost. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of statistical models, a machine learning (ML) model, and The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program's (ACS‐NSQIP) calculator in predicting LOS following surgery for OCC. Materials and Methods: A retrospective multicenter database study was performed at two major academic head and neck cancer centers. Patients with OCC who underwent major free flap reconstructive surgery between January 2008 and June 2019 surgery were selected. Data were pooled and split into training and validation datasets. Statistical and ML models were developed, and performance was evaluated by comparing predicted and actual LOS using correlation coefficient values and percent accuracy. Results: Totally 837 patients were selected with mean patient age being 62.5 ± 11.7 [SD] years and 67% being male. The ML model demonstrated the best accuracy (validation correlation 0.48, 4‐day accuracy 70%), compared with the statistical models: multivariate analysis (0.45, 67%) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (0.42, 70%). All were superior to the ACS‐NSQIP calculator's performance (0.23, 59%). Conclusion: We developed statistical and ML models that predicted LOS following major free flap reconstructive surgery for OCC. Our models demonstrated superior predictive performance to the ACS‐NSQIP calculator. The ML model identified several novel predictors of LOS. Abstract

We report on the synthesis and characterization of bent-core liquid crystal (LC) compounds and the preparation of mixtures that provide an optically isotropic antiferroelectric (OI-AFLC) liquid crystal display mode over a very wide temperature interval and well below room temperature. From the collection of compounds synthesized during this study, we recognized that several ternary mixtures displayed a modulated SmCaPA phase down to below -40 °C and up to about 100 °C on both heating and cooling, as well as optical tilt angles in the transformed state of approximately 45° (optically isotropic state). The materials were fully characterized and their liquid crystal as well as electro-optical properties analyzed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy, and electro-optical tests.

Abstract

Background: The high incidence of pediatric acute otitis media (AOM) makes the implications of overdiagnosis and overtreatment far-reaching. Quality indicators (QIs) for AOM are limited, drawing from generalized upper respiratory infection QIs, or locally developed benchmarks. Recognizing this, we sought to develop pediatric AOM QIs to build a foundation for future quality improvement efforts. Methods: Candidate indicators (CIs) were extracted from existing guidelines and position statements. The modified RAND Corporation/University of California, Los Angeles (RAND/UCLA) appropriateness methodology was used to select the final QIs by an 11-member expert panel consisting of otolaryngology—head and neck surgeons, a pediatrician and family physician. Results: Twenty-seven CIs were identified after literature review, with an additional CI developed by the expert panel. After the first round of evaluations, the panel agreed on 4 CIs as appropriate QIs. After an expert panel meeting and subsequent second round of evaluations, the panel agreed on 8 final QIs as appropriate measures of high-quality care. The 8 final QIs focus on topics of antimicrobial management, specialty referral, and tympanostomy tube counseling. Conclusions: Evidence of variable and substandard care persists in the diagnosis and management of pediatric AOM despite the existence of high-quality guidelines. This study proposes 8 QIs which compliment guideline recommendations and are meant to facilitate future quality improvement initiatives that can improve patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
