The psychological effect of physical environment on office personnel has been generally ignored in the planning of layout and furnishings. The environment can have either positive or negative effects on employee behavior, attitudes and work. Some types of jobs require different physical structures than others for best performance. The effects of various kinds of stimuli are examined. Symbolic artifacts such as colors and decorations create an atmosphere that will have a desirable or undesirable effect. Diagrams illustrate and clarify the text.
