9. Late Silurian event stratigraphy and facies of South Wales and the Welsh Borderland, United Kingdom

Abstract

Lithofacies and biostratigraphical analysis has enabled the establishment of a stratigraphic event framework for Ludfordian and Pridoli strata in south Wales and the Welsh Borderland. In SW Wales, the Golden Grove Axis acted as a structural hinge separating the shallow marine storm-influenced Cae’r mynach Seaway from a pediment surface above which Ludfordian colluvium (Abercyfor Formation) was deposited. The Axis seeded four NW-derived river-influenced delta progrades of Leintwardinian to early Pridoli age (Tilestones Formation). A NE-sourced early Pridoli wave-influenced delta deposited the Downton Castle Sandstone Formation (DCSF), coeval to the youngest Tilestones prograde, with a lateral interface existing between Mynydd Epynt and the Clun Forest area. Except for the Malverns area, the DCSF is no longer recognized south of the Neath Disturbance. Early Pridoli forced regression promoted widespread subaerial exposure north of the Neath Disturbance, with incision into tracts close to the Welsh Borderland Fault System. The basinward-shift in facies belts resulted in marine erosion and deposition of a phosphatic ravinement pebble lag. The wave-influenced Clifford’s Mesne Sandstone Formation delta subsequently seeded on the Gorsley Axis with tidally influenced Rushall Formation accumulating in a back-barrier setting. The Pwll-Mawr Formation records the easterly advance of coeval coastal deposits on the western side of the remnant Cae’r mynach Seaway. Behind migrating delta coastlines, green muds accumulated on coastal plains (Temeside Mudstone Formation) with better drained red dryland alluvium (Moor Cliffs Formation) charting expansion of Old Red Sandstone lithofacies. Mid-Pridoli incision preserves the Pont ar Llechau Formation estuarine valley fill.

10. Reinterpreting Boltzmann's H-theorem in the light of Information Theory

Abstract

Prompted by the realisation that the statistical entropy of an ideal gas in the micro-canonical ensemble should not fluctuate or change over time, the meaning of the H-theorem is re-interpreted from the perspective of information theory in which entropy is a measure of uncertainty. We propose that the Maxwellian velocity distribution should more properly be regarded as a limiting distribution which is identical with the distribution across particles in the asymptotic limit of large numbers. In smaller systems, the distribution across particles differs from the limiting distribution and fluctuates. Therefore the entropy can be calculated either from the actual distribution across the particles or from the limiting distribution. The former fluctuates with the distribution but the latter does not. However, only the latter represents uncertainty in the sense implied by information theory by accounting for all possible microstates. We also argue that the Maxwellian probability distribution for the velocity of a single particle should be regarded as a limiting distribution. Therefore the entropy of a single particle is well defined, as is the entropy of an N-particle system, regardless of the microstate. We argue that the meaning of the H-theorem is to reveal the underlying distribution in the limit of large numbers. Computer simulations of a hard-sphere fluid are used to demonstrate the ideas., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Statistical Physics. For a long time now, confusion has existed in the minds of many over the meaning of various concepts in thermodynamics. Recently, this point has been brought to people's attention by two articles appearing on the well-known archive (arxiv) web site. The content of these two pieces serves to illustrate many of the problems and has occasioned the construction of this answer to at least some of them. The position of the axiom proposed by Carath\'eodory is central in this matter and here its position is clarified and secured within the framework of thermodynamics. 12. Does Physics Need 'Dark Matter'?

Abstract

To fully understand the present position concerning so-called dark matter, it is necessary to examine the historical background since, only by following this approach, do all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Here an attempt is made to do this briefly and it is found that an interesting and important question is raised. This question relates to the position of electromagnetism in astronomical considerations since history indicates that, in the years following the beginning of the 20th century, interest in electromagnetic effects appeared to wane. Hence, following an examination of the history and the presently accepted position where reliance for solutions seems confined to examining gravitational effects, attention is turned to hypotheses based on plasma physics to see if a more feasible solution to the problem of the missing mass can be furnished utilising its fundamental ideas. While the purpose here is to concentrate on dark matter and the supposed need for its introduction into physics, this consideration of electromagnetic effects combined with the realisation that most matter in the Universe is in the form of plasma also indicates alternative routes to seeking solutions for other puzzling astronomical phenomena., Comment: 10 pages

13. Men changing nappies: Dismantling a key barrier to gender-diversifying the early years workforce.

Abstract

Currently the number of men working in early years education in England is very low at 2%. This stubbornly resistant workforce pattern matters because it perpetuates the entrenched gender stereotype of young children's education and care as women's work. It is extraordinary to find this corner of gender statis in a world that is supposedly in the grip of a gender revolution. This gender revolution does not appear to have impacted on, or even dented, the gendered nature of the early years workforce. This is all the more remarkable because early years staffing shortages have now reached crisis point in England (the country where the authors reside and where they have carried out the research referred to in this paper). The small minority of men that do take up work in this sector often work interchangeably with their female counterparts, adopting a range of roles and responsibilities including reading, rough and tumble, comforting and food preparation. The task of intimate care however, or more specifically 'nappy changing', remains an area of tension within men's presence in early years settings, with parents or carers sometimes requesting that male practitioners do not change their child's nappy or nursery managers removing men from this role. Although the Sex Discrimination and Equalities Act 2010 stipulates that no employee should be discriminated against because of their sex, a 2-year study into the recruitment and support of men in early years education in England (GenderEYE) shows that discriminatory practices around intimate care are very much alive. Several neglected papers from the last century are resurrected and their contents analysed in order to revisit the question of whether or not there is an aether. The results of that query lead to suggesting possible new approaches to many fundamental ideas in physics. Negative energy and the primacy of thermodynamics in universal processes are discussed. Practical benefits of including an aether within a functional physical paradigm are discussed, inclusive of new methods of clean energy production and the rapid disposal of nuclear waste according to hadronic physics. Abstract

A new component of the Early Palaeozoic arthropod fauna is described from a monospecific accumulate of carapaces in a Late Ordovician (Katian) hemipelagic mudstone from the Cardigan district of southwest Wales (UK). Its non-biomineralized carapace is preserved as a carbonaceous residue, as is more labile anatomy (soft-parts) including the inner lamella and sub-ovate structures near its antero-dorsal margin, which we interpret to be putative eyes. The depositional context and associated fauna indicate that the arthropods inhabited an area of deep water and high primary productivity above a pronounced submarine topography. The preserved density of carapaces suggests the arthropods may have congregated into shoals or been transported post-mortem into depressions which acted as detritus traps. The accumulate provides a rare example of soft-part preservation in hemipelagic mudstones and highlights the role of organic material as a locus for authigenic mineralization during metamorphism. Abstract

AI is transforming labor markets around the world. Existing research has focused on advanced economies but has neglected developing economies. Different impacts of AI on labor markets in different countries arise not only from heterogeneous occupational structures, but also from the fact that occupations vary across countries in their composition of tasks. We propose a new methodology to translate existing measures of AI impacts that were developed for the US to countries at various levels of economic development. Our method assesses semantic similarities between textual descriptions of work activities in the US and workers' skills elicited in surveys for other countries. We implement the approach using the measure of suitability of work activities for machine learning provided by Brynjolfsson et al. (2018) for the US and the World Bank's STEP survey for Lao PDR and Viet Nam. Our approach allows characterizing the extent to which workers and occupations in a given country are subject to destructive digitalization, which puts workers at risk of being displaced, in contrast to transformative digitalization, which tends to benefit workers. We find that workers in Lao PDR are less likely than in Viet Nam to be in the "machine terrain", where workers will have to adapt to occupational transformations due to AI and are at risk of being partially displaced. Our method based on semantic textual similarities using SBERT is advantageous compared to approaches transferring AI impact scores across countries using crosswalks of occupational codes.

Abstract

To help calibrate the emerging Upper Ordovician chitinozoan biozonation with the graptolite biozonation in the Anglo-Welsh, historical type basin, the graptolite-bearing CaradocAshgill successions between Fishguard and Cardigan, and at Whitland, SW Wales, have been collected for chitinozoans. In the Cardigan district, finds of Armoricochitina reticulifera within strata referred to the clingani graptolite Biozone (morrisi Subzone), together with accessory species, indicate the Fungochitina spinifera chitinozoan Biozone, known from several Ordovician sections in northern England that span the base of the Ashgill Series. Tanuchitina ?bergstroemi, eponymous of the succeeding chitinozoan biozone, has tentatively been recovered from strata of Pleurograptus linearis graptolite Biozone age in the Cardigan area. The T. ?bergstroemi Biozone can also be correlated with the type Ashgill Series of northern England. Chitinozoans suggest that the widespread Welsh Basin anoxic--oxic transition at the base of the Nantmel Mudstones Formation in Wales, traditionally equated with the Caradoc--Ashgill boundary, is of Cautleyan (or younger Ashgill) age in the Cardigan area. In the broadly time-equivalent, graptolite-rich Whitland section, also in SW Wales, two Baltoscandian chitinozoan biozones and a subzone have been recognized (again using accessory species), namely the Spinachitina cervicornis Biozone?, the Fungochitina spinifera Biozone and the Armoricochitina reticulifera Subzone. The new chitinozoan data provide a more precise means of correlation between the Whitland and Cardigan successions and suggest that the Normalograptus proliferation interval of the Whitland section is at least partly attributable to the Dicellograptus morrisi Subzone of the Dicranograptus clingani Biozone, rather than equating with the overlying Pleurograptus linearis Biozone. Gravitational theory has remained at an impasse for a great many years. Theoretical questions of substantial importance remain unanswered, such as: ―Is there coupling of electromagnetic fields and gravitational fields?‖ This paper will reveal the reasons for the evident difficulty in theoretical advancement and begin to point the way toward needed corrections of gravitational theory with an emphasis placed upon actual experimental results and practical solutions. These recommendations and analyses may in turn allow quick realization of the many benefits now concealed beneath current accepted theory, which include but are not limited to: 1. clean, inexpensive, near limitless energy for industry and the populous, and 2. practical means of utilizing mass as a variable potentially including, industrial applications, space and terrestrial travel. The possible validity of Einstein‘s Twin Paradox and a conditional solution implying a mechanism of absolute time are discussed. New gravitational theory is proposed. Specific gravity based designs demonstrating over one efficiency are proposed for experimental and practical testing, confirmation and subsequent duplication.
