Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 535 authors from 84 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

Dielectric relaxation of materials provides important information on the polarisation dynamics at different time scales. We study the dielectric relaxation of a nematic liquid crystal under steady rotational shear and simultaneously measure the viscosity. The dielectric anisotropy of the nematic is positive and the applied field is parallel to the velocity gradient direction with a magnitude larger than the Freedericksz threshold field. The complex dielectric constant as well as the effective viscosity decreases rapidly with increasing shear rate. The dielectric relaxation frequency exhibits a non-monotonous shear rate dependence, first decreasing but beyond a critical shear rate increasing. Our experiments suggest the emergence of collective dipolar relaxation under the influence of the competing effects of hydrodynamic and dielectric torques., Comment: 5 Figures

Abstract

Obtaining spectroscopic observations of the progenitors of core-collapse supernovae is often unfeasible due to an inherent lack of knowledge as to which stars will go supernova and when they will explode. In this letter, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the progenitor activity of SN 2023fyq in the preceding 150 days before the He-rich progenitor exploded as a Type Ibn supernova. The progenitor of SN 2023fyq shows an exponential rise in flux prior to core-collapse. Complex He I emission line features are observed, with a P-Cygni like profile, as well as an evolving broad base with velocities on the order of 10,000 km/s, possibly due to electron scattering. The luminosity and evolution of SN 2023fyq are consistent with a faint Type Ibn, reaching a peak r-band magnitude of 18.1 mag, although there is some uncertainty in the distance to the host, NGC 4388, located in the Virgo cluster. We present additional evidence of asymmetric He-rich material being present prior to the explosion of SN 2023fyq, as well as after, suggesting this material has survived the ejecta-CSM interaction. Broad [O I] and the Ca II triplet lines are observed at late phases, confirming that SN 2023fyq was a genuine supernova rather than a non-terminal interacting transient. SN 2023fyq provides insight into the final moments of a massive star's life, highlighting that the progenitor is likely highly unstable before core-collapse., Comment: 7 Pages, 5 Figures, accepted to A&A Letters

Abstract

Reversal learning measures the ability to form flexible associations between choice outcomes with stimuli and actions that precede them. This type of learning is thought to rely on several cortical and subcortical areas, including the highly interconnected orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and basolateral amygdala (BLA), and is often impaired in various neuropsychiatric and substance use disorders. However, the unique contributions of these regions to stimulus- and action-based reversal learning have not been systematically compared using a chemogenetic approach particularly before and after the first reversal that introduces new uncertainty. Here, we examined the roles of ventrolateral OFC (vlOFC) and BLA during reversal learning. Male and female rats were prepared with inhibitory designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs targeting projection neurons in these regions and tested on a series of deterministic and probabilistic reversals during which they learned about stimulus identity or side (left or right) associated with different reward probabilities. Using a counterbalanced within-subject design, we inhibited these regions prior to reversal sessions. We assessed initial and pre-/post-reversal changes in performance to measure learning and adjustments to reversals, respectively. We found that inhibition of the ventrolateral orbitofrontal cortex (vlOFC), but not BLA, eliminated adjustments to stimulus-based reversals. Inhibition of BLA, but not vlOFC, selectively impaired action-based probabilistic reversal learning, leaving deterministic reversal learning intact. vlOFC exhibited a sex-dependent role in early adjustment to action-based reversals, but not in overall learning. These results reveal dissociable roles for BLA and vlOFC in flexible learning and highlight a more crucial role for BLA in learning meaningful changes in the reward environment.

Abstract

Unleashing the potential of organic solar cell (OSC) research drives advancements in renewable energy, paving the way for accessible, affordable, and sustainable solar power aiming to meet the global energy needs of the century. The knowledge on the structure-property relationship is essential of the potential organic molecules to improve the efficiency, stability, and reliability of OSC molecules. The recent research works suggest that thiophene based Fluorinated Boron-Dipyrromethene (BODIPY) molecules have the potential to improve the efficiency and performance of organic solar cells and therefore we have designed and studied seven new 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetrathienyl-4-boron-3a,4a,8-triaza-s-indacene (DT) molecules by fusing thiophene unit(s) using Density functional theory (DFT) and Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) calculations for their optoelectronic properties. Our results reveal that site specific incorporation of thiophene units bring enhanced absorption and emission maxima (up to 902.42 nm and 958.91 nm respectively) for the designed DT molecules with reduced HOMO-LUMO gaps. Optimized geometries tell that there is an excellent π-delocalization along with stabilizing weak interactions dictating the planarity of these molecules. The computed optoelectronic properties such as light harvesting efficiency, Transition density matrix, reorganization energy, hole and electron transport properties indicate that these designed molecules tend to show better characteristic features compared to the experimentally reported DT molecule. Introducing electron deficient groups like nitrobenzene has a little effect on the optoelectronic properties of DT derivatives. Overall, this study provides insights into the effect of fusion of thiophene units at different positions on aza-BODIPY derivative in the optoelectronic properties of DT molecules and provides valuable clues for further investigation in utilizing them to produce organic solar cells with enhanced photovoltaic properties.

Abstract

K. C. Das is deservedly one of the most celebrated writers in India today. He writes primarily in Oriya, the language of his native state of Orissa, where he was born in 1924. A civil servant by profession, Das pursued a second career as a writer of stories, poems, and essays. The stories in this collection take place in an urban setting. The characters are mainly middle class, making them more accessible to North American readers than other examples of contemporary Indian fiction. These are not simple stories. They are about “divides,” about gaps between realities and imagination. In complex shifts between direct dialogue, interior monologue, and interior or imagined dialogue, Das lovingly but mercilessly exposes his characters' thoughts, self-deceptions, and the games they play with each other. These are stories about human weaknesses, the fallibility of human relationships, and the strategies we adopt to cope with our failures. They are about coming to terms with unpleasant, sometimes shocking truths about ourselves and others.
