- Abstract
The continuous use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) is a result of the immediate effectiveness in the treatment and relief of gastrointestinal discomforts faced by users, especially those who make use of polypharmacy, such as the elderly. However, researches point out possible risks in face of the prolonged and/or indiscriminate administration of these drugs. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the implications of the prolonged use of PPI's, confronting possible health risks such as: changes in the stomach microbiota, nutritional malabsorption, immunological vulnerability associated with the susceptibility of proliferation of infections and viral, fungal and even viral diseases. gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Through a literature review, we sought to discuss the damage most potentially resulting from extensive treatment with PPIs and the various pathogenic susceptibilities for the human body. For this study, a bibliographic survey was carried out in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Korean and French, in the following databases: Scielo, PubMed, PEBMED, NCBI, SAGE and CAPES. The time frame included in the research included scientific articles from 2015 to 2021. Next, results were raised to highlight the real risks and recommendations, with a view to solving the problem studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
