Abstract

The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a novel kind of polarimeter optimized for the measurement of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Back-ground (CMB), which is one of the major challenges of observational cosmology. The signal is expected to be of the order of a few tens of nK, prone to instrumental systematic effects and polluted by various astrophysical foregrounds which can only be controlled through multichroic observations. QUBIC is designed to address these observational issues with a novel approach that combines the advantages of interferometry in terms of control of instrumental systematics with those of bolometric detectors in terms of wide-band, background-limited sensitivity., Comment: Contribution to the 2022 Cosmology session of the 33rd Rencontres de Blois. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2203.08947

Abstract

QUBIC (Q and U bolometric interferometer for cosmology) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated to the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combines the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta province. The QUBIC detection chain consists of 2048 NbSi transition edge sensors (TESs) cooled to 320 mK. The voltage-biased TESs are read out with time domain multiplexing based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) at 60 K allowing an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128 to be reached. The current QUBIC version is based on a reduced number of detectors (1/4) in order to validate the detection technique. The QUBIC experiment is currently being validated in the lab in Salta (Argentina) before going to the site for observations. This paper presents the main results of the characterization phase with a focus on the detectors and readout system.

Abstract

An alternative study involving proteome analysis of the 24 hour Nicotiana tabacum protoplast culture medium was performed with the aim to confirm relations among regulatory elements of exocytotic processes. Protoplasts present many convenient features to study cellular processes during transient over-expression or suppression of specific gene's products. We performed a proteomic analysis of the culture medium fraction of protoplasts transiently expressing transgenes for 24 hours to characterize the effect of various regulatory proteins dominant negative mutants. A total number of 49 spots were found reproducible in the medium. 24 of these spots were identified with nano RP-HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Only three and six spots were respectively identified as canonical and non-canonical secreted cell wall proteins. The low number of spots present in the culture medium fraction allowed us the ambitious experiment to analyze the influence of various SNAREs (SYP121, SYP122, SNAP33) and Rab (Rab11) dominant negative mutants. Missing a reasonable number of identified proteins the analyses gave rise to a similarity matrix statistically analyzed considering variation within the presence of 24 spots reproducible in presence of transient over-expression of SNAREs (SYP121 and SYP122) and Rab11 native cDNAs. The similarity confirmed the closer relation between the function of SYP122 and Rab11 as evidenced by the secRGUS based analysis. This analysis included the effect of SNAP33 DN mutant and showed that this Qb-c-SNARE influence both SYP121 and SYP122 SNARE complexes.

Abstract

In ischaemic stroke, thrombolytic drugs speed the recanalisation of intracerebral arteries. The effects of aspirin are not known. A trial was conducted to determine whether, separately or together, streptokinase and aspirin have clinical benefits in acute ischaemic stroke similar to those in acute myocardial infarction. 622 patients with acute ischaemic stroke within 6 hours of symptom onset were randomised with a 2x2 factorial design to (i) a 1-hour intravenous infusion of 1 . 5 MU streptokinase, (ii) 300 mg/day buffered aspirin for 10 days, (iii) both active treatments, or (iv) neither. Early results raised a question whether the trial should be continued. Abstract

The potential of sweet potato as an alternative crop for bioethanol production has been assessed. We evaluated the amount of soluble sugars, starch and cell wall polysaccharides in tubers of three sweet potato cultivars characterized by different pulp and peel colouration: “Yellow yam” with yellow flesh and brown peel, “White yam” with white flesh and white peel and “Orange yam” with orange flesh and brown peel. The results confirm the high concentration of carbohydrates in sweet potato tubers, especially “Yellow yam”, mainly in the form of starch (67%) and soluble sugars (26%). “Yellow yam”, which is the most widespread cultivar in Salento, appeared the best choice as biomass for bioethanol production. It is characterized by high productivity (20–40 tons/ha year). Results also suggest that “Yellow yam” cultivar has great potential as a bioethanol source in southern Italy with an estimated agroindustrial production yield higher than 2032 l/ha year.
