The effect of daily ingestion of polypropylene microplastic on the health of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was evaluated. 60 fish (± 200 g) were placed in 6 aquariums (n = 10, 100 L each), constituting the following treatments: Control (without the addition of polymer), fed with 100 and 500 µg of polypropylene/kg of body weight (b.w.), respectively. After 30 days of feeding, the animals were submitted to blood collection for hemogram and biochemical study and later euthanized for gut microbiological analysis, somatic index of liver, spleen, heart, kidney, stomach, and intestine. In the serum biochemical study, an increase in cholesterol and serum Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) activity levels was observed in animals treated with 500 µg of polypropylene. Tilapia-fed polypropylene in the diet showed an increase in thrombocyte and total leukocyte counts, marked by a significant increase in the number of circulating lymphocytes. The results of the somatic study revealed a significant increase in the stomach, liver, and heart of tilapia fed with the polymer. Increase in the number of Gram-negative microorganisms and decrease in mesophilic aerobic microorganisms were observed in the gut of fish exposed to the polymer, including a dose-response effect was observed for these analyses. Therefore, tilapias fed daily with diets containing polypropylene for 30 consecutive days showed deleterious effects, resulting in systemic inflammatory disturbs by altering liver functions, leukocyte profile, and organ morphometry, as well as changes in the intestinal microbiota. Such results demonstrate the impairment of fish health, highlighting the need for further studies that evaluate the impact of microplastics on aquatic organisms., (© 2023. Background: Greater degradation of the hybrid layer is expected when a universal adhesive system is used, especially in the conventional application strategy. Therefore, it would important to evaluate the effect of the ethanol (ETH) and a potential matrix protease inhibitor (caffeic acid phenethyl ester/ CAPE) to maximize the ability to achieve stable dentin bond strength. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effect of ETH on a wet-bonding technique, and dentin pretreatments with different concentrations of CAPE in ethanolic solution, followed by application of a universal adhesive system (Single Bond Universal) to inhibit proteolytic activity., Material and Methods: Dentin blocks were allocated to eight experimental groups according to the strategy (total-etch our self-etch) and treatments: ETH, or dentin pretreatment with CAPE (at 0.5%, 2.5%; and 5.0%). Half of each block (each hemiblock) served as the control (without dentin pretreatments) for the same group. The bonding strategy was performed (adhesive system/ restoration with composite resin). Two slices were obtained from each hemiblock and evaluated using in situ zymography. The proteolytic activity was analyzed by quantifying the green photons of the images obtained under a fluorescence microscope in three dentin locations close to the dentin-resin interface: hybrid layer (HL), underlying dentin (UD) and deep dentin (DD)., Results: Wilcoxon tests (for comparison between experimental and control groups) and Friedman and Nemenyi tests (for comparisons between interface locations) showed that there was no difference between the groups with different CAPE concentrations and the respective control groups ( p >0.05). ETH reduced the proteolytic activity at the HL and UD ( p <0.05)., Conclusions: The wet-bonding technique with ETH proved effective in reducing the proteolytic activity. The use of CAPE in different concentrations solubilized in ethanol did not have a favorable effect on proteolytic inhibition. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been progressively applied in the last decades, which may impact the environment. Synthesis of pigments, growing, and nutrient element uptake by plants can also be affected by NPs. The influence of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La 2 O 3 NPs) on growth, pigment synthesis, and nutrient element uptake by Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen, a medicinal plant native in South America, was evaluated in the present study. P. glomerata plantlets were cultivated for 28 days in the absence (control) and presence of 100, 200, and 400 mg L -1 of La 2 O 3 NPs or bulk-La 2 O 3 (b-La 2 O 3 ) at the same cultivation conditions. Root development, aerial part growth, and pigment concentration in plants were affected by b-La 2 O 3 and La 2 O 3 NPs, mainly by La 2 O 3 NPs. In spite of alteration of nutrient element concentration observed for the 100 and 200 mg L -1 of La 2 O 3 NPs or b-La 2 O 3 treatments, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, S, and Zn determination in stems and leaves revealed drastically and similar decrease of these elements in plants cultivated in the presence of 400 mg L -1 of La 2 O 3 NPs or b-La 2 O 3 . Element distribution (mapping) determined by using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in leaves of plants submitted to treatment with 400 mg L -1 of b-La 2 O 3 or La 2 O 3 NPs showed differences in the distribution of elements, indicating distinct effects of b-La 2 O 3 and La 2 O 3 NPs on P. glomerata. As such, this study demonstrated that La 2 O 3 NPs may impact plant growth. However, more investigations are necessary for better understanding of the effect of La 2 O 3 on plants, including a broader range of concentration., (© 2022. The use of Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) as a slow-release vehicle for vaccines has attracted the attention of researchers, since its insertion improves the uptake of them, and reduces side effects or by stimulating recruited defense cells, assisting immunity without the need for booster vaccine doses. Seeking to develop new strategies for the administration of drugs and vaccines in aquaculture, we evaluated the biocompatibility and biodegradation of polymeric PLA devices and PLA plus vitamin E devices, implanted through subcutaneous (SC) and intraperitoneal (IP) routes in Nile tilapia. To carry out this study, 84 male tilapia (initial 243.82 ± 56.74 g; final 400.71 ± 100.54 g) were randomly distributed in 3 tanks ( n  = 28 fish per treatment/tank). The devices were prepared in two formulations: neat PLA (containing 100% PLA) and PLAVE (PLA plus vitamin E) implanted using a commercial AnimalTag® applicator, and non-implanted fish (control). Fish were sampled 15, 30, 60, and 120 days post-implantation (DPI). Blood analysis was used to access blood cells and blood smear for differential leucocytes count. Serum biochemistry to evaluated changes in serum proteins and glycemia. Histopathological investigation using hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) was used to assess polymer-tissue interaction. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry was used to detection immune cells and phagocytes in capsule, and analyses of melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) to morphometric evaluation and percentage amount of melanin, hemosiderin and lipofucsin pigments. Histopathological study revealed an increase of capsular formation and inflammatory cell infiltration in PLAVE-implanted tilapia through SC route (15 DPI). Tilapia implanted with PLAVE and PLA (SC) presented mast cells and eosinophilic granular cells during 15, 30, and 60 DPI, with a decrease in these cells in the fibrous capsule around the polymer at 120 DPI. PLAVE implanted tilapia SC at 60 DPI showed significantly phagocytosis points than other groups. Phagocytic cells (F4/80+) were observed near to biopolymers in phagocytosis sites. Lipofuscin at 120 DPI in spleen melanomacrophage centers were significantly high in PLAVE implanted tilapias when compared to fish with PLA implants and control. The serum biochemical study of tilapia did not reveal changes in cytotoxicity and liver function in implanted fish. The absence of side effects in hematological and biochemical findings, including the absence of mortality after device implantation, proves its clinical safety. Cancer development by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can occur through the canonical HPV/p53/RB1 pathway mediated by the E2/E6/E7 viral oncoproteins. During the transformation process, HPV inserts its genetic material into host Integration Sites (IS), affecting coding genes and miRNAs. In penile cancer (PeCa) there is limited data on the miRNAs that regulate mRNA targets associated with HPV, such as the TP53 and RB1 genes. Considering the high frequency of HPV infection in PeCa patients in Northeast Brazil, global miRNA expression profiling was performed in high-risk HPV-associated PeCa that presented with TP53 and RB1 mRNA downregulated expression. The miRNA expression profile of 22 PeCa tissue samples and five non-tumor penile tissues showed 507 differentially expressed miRNAs: 494 downregulated and 13 upregulated (let-7a-5p, miR-130a-3p, miR-142-3p, miR-15b-5p miR-16-5p, miR-200c-3p, miR-205-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-223-3p, miR-22-3p, miR-25-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-93-5p), of which 11 were identified to be in HPV16-IS and targeting TP53 and RB1 genes. One hundred and thirty-one and 490 miRNA binding sites were observed for TP53 and RB1 , respectively, most of which were in seedless regions. Background: Muscle wasting is associated with worse outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. We assessed the association of calf circumference (CC) measurements with clinical outcomes in COPD patients referred to an outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program (PRP)., Methods: In this single-center, retrospective study, we analyzed demographic and clinical data ( spirometry tests, comorbidities, COPD exacerbations, dyspnea scoring, exercise capacity, quality-of-life scores, BMI, CC measurements, and all-cause deaths [for 2 years]) from COPD patients PRP medical records. Patients were grouped according to CC into reduced CC (male, ≤34 cm; female, ≤33 cm) or adequate CC groups., Results: We evaluated 144 patients (aged 64.6 ± 8.5 years; mostly males; forced expiratory volume in 1 s, 40.3% ± 15.8%, predicted). Eighteen patients (12.5%) died during the 2 years of follow-up. Logistic regression showed that patients with reduced CC were more likely to present worse outcomes compared with COPD patients with adequate CC: more advanced disease severity (odds ratio [OR] = 5.09; 95% CI, 2.00-12.96), COPD frequent exacerbators (OR = 2.34; 95% CI, 1.11-4.91), worse total quality-of-life score (OR = 2.70, 95% CI, 1.22-6.00), and higher mortality (OR = 3.69; 95% CI, 1.06-12.87)., Conclusion: Reduced CC in COPD patients under initial assessment for PRP admission was associated with disease severity, frequent exacerbation, poor health status, and higher mortality in 2 years of follow-up. Astrocytes play an important role in the central nervous system function and may contribute to brain plasticity response during static magnetic fields (SMF) brain therapy. However, most studies evaluate SMF stimulation in brain plasticity while few studies evaluate the consequences of SMF at the cellular level. Thus, we here evaluate the effects of SMF at 305 mT (medium-intensity) in a primary culture of healthy/normal cortical astrocytes obtained from neonatal (1 to 2-day-old) Wistar rats. After reaching confluence, cells were daily subjected to SMF stimulation for 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, and 40 min during 7 consecutive days. Oxidative stress parameters, cell cycle, cell viability, and mitochondrial function were analyzed. The antioxidant capacity was reduced in groups stimulated for 5 and 40 min. Although no difference was observed in the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase or the total thiol content, lipid peroxidation was increased in all stimulated groups. The cell cycle was changed after 40 min of SMF stimulation while 15, 30, and 40 min led cells to death by necrosis. Mitochondrial function was reduced after SMF stimulation, although imaging analysis did not reveal substantial changes in the mitochondrial network. Results mainly revealed that SMF compromised healthy astrocytes' oxidative status and viability. This finding reveals how important is to understand the SMF stimulation at the cellular level since this therapeutic approach has been largely used against neurological and psychiatric diseases., (© 2021. Background: The search for the ideal, healthy and reproducible position of the condyles is of utmost importance for dental diagnosis and treatment. Thus, the objective of this laboratory cross-sectional study was to verify the relationship between the posterior joint space and the mandibular lateral movements., Material and Methods: Dental casts from 15 women and 15 men with normal mastication, 28 natural teeth and no history of temporomandibular disorders or pain, were fabricated and mounted on a fully adjustable articulator. From the maximum intercuspal position, condylar displacement was evaluated and measured on the working and nonworking sides during mandibular lateral movement, both to the right and left sides., Results: The correlation between the measures of interest was assessed with the Pearson correlation coefficient (α=.05). Condylar displacement on the working side and nonworking side condyle was 0.88±0.71 mm and 3.57±1.11 mm (right mandibular lateral movement); and 0.91±0.58 mm and 3.51±0.78mm (left mandibular lateral movement), respectively. No significant correlation in the condylar displacement between the working side condyles on the right and on the left sides was observed (r=.22; P=.248). The condylar poles of the articulator moved posteriorly, simulating the functional movements of the mandible during mastication. In all cases, condylar displacement during mandibular lateral movement both to the right and left occurred posteriorly on the working side condyle., Conclusions: The condylar poles of the articulator moved posteriorly simulating the functional movements of the mandible during mastication. Moreover, left and right working condyles may require slightly different spaces to function, suggesting minor anatomical asymmetries. Purpose: Translate, adapt and validate the Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance of Children questionnaire to Brazilian Portuguese, as well as analyzing the interaction between parents/caregivers and children., Methods: After translated, back translated and adapted this questionnaire was administered to 13 parents or guardians of children with moderate to severe hearing loss that were treated in the ambulatory of audiology of the Institution. Parents should fill out the diary, answering the questionnaire, giving as many examples of observed behaviors for each question and return for follow-up after a week for an interview with the evaluator or child's therapist., Results: Data are presented in frequency and percentage. We used chi-square test with a 5% significance level (p). Two questions were culturally adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. The questionnaires were answered by mothers most of the time (69.2%)., Conclusions: The questionnaire was translated and adapted respecting the cultural aspects of the Brazilian population. It was observed that, for some questions, it is necessary care when analyzing the answers that parents provide, taking into consideration the child's age and linguistic content that is required for the observed behavior, avoiding erroneous interpretations made on the quality of amplification and the use of hearing aids or CI due to this. The questionnaire is of great importance since it measures the performance of children in their daily life situations.

Purpose: To culturally adapt the Family Quality of Life Scale to the Brazilian Portuguese version and evaluate the instrument reliability and family quality of life of those who have children with hearing loss., Methods: The process of cultural adaptation of the scale followed the steps of the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measure. It was conducted in three stages: translation, back translation, and application in a pilot sample, as a way to check the comprehension difficulties of the items. After it had been completed, it was administered to 41 families who have children with hearing loss and, with their results, the quality of life and reliability were analyzed based on the Cronbach's alpha statistical test., Results: In the first version (translation), among the 25 items, there were differences between the translators only in four items; after the corrections, the second version was done (back translation), in which other four more differences were found. Finally, after the final corrections, the last version was developed and used in the pilot sample without differences. Thus, it was applied to families with deaf children, who believe to be satisfied as to their quality of life. The Cronbach's alpha test found that the scale shows a satisfactory reliability., Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the Family Quality of Life Scale is a tool of easy use and satisfactory reliability. The families are satisfied with their family quality of life.

Objective: To analyze the effect of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program (PRP) on the levels of anxiety and depression and the quality of life of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease., Method: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who completed the PRP of 3 weekly sessions of 60 min duration for 12 weeks, a total of 36 sessions, were assessed using Beck Inventory (BAI and BDI) and Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ)., Results: A total of 125 individuals, with an average age of 63.7 ± 8.8 years, FEV1: 1.17 ± 0.57L (43.18 ± 18.79% predicted), 61.6% male and 38.4% female, were analyzed. The BAI and BDI before and after PRP were, respectively, 10.15 ± 6.32 vs. 7.67 ± 7.21; p=0.0041 and 12.60 ± 7.99 vs. 8.96 ± 7.29; p=0.00016. The results of the SGRQ domains were, respectively, Before and After symptoms (48.53 ± 20.41 vs. 32.58 ± 18.95), Activity (69.15 ± 20.79 vs. 52.42 ± 23.70), Impact (32.92 ± 18.29 vs. 20.27 ± 16.70), Total (46.69 ± 16.90 vs. 32.07 ± 16.96). When correlating the BDI to the domains of the SGRQ, weak correlations were observed (Symptoms r=0.22; p=0.01; Activity r=0.28; p=0.001; Impact r=0.52; p=2.72; Total r=0.44; p=0.17). In the same way, weak correlations were observed when correlating the BAI to the SGRQ (Symptoms r=0.28; p=0.0009; Activity r=0.32; p=0.0005; Impact r=0.42; p=7.33; Total r=0.43; p=0.74)., Conclusion: Although the PRP improves levels of depression and anxiety as well as the quality of life in patients with COPD, no significant correlation of these analyzed variables was observed., (Copyright © 2013 Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia. Background and Objective: Reduced fat-free mass (FFM), a common finding in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), may indirectly impact peak exercise capacity through a greater level of pulmonary hyperinflation. We aimed to investigate if FFM index (FFM/squared height) impacts exercise induced dynamic hyperinflation in COPD patients., Methods: Fifty-four patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD performed a symptom limited incremental cardiopulmonary exercise tests with serial measurements of inspiratory capacity (IC). FFM was measured by whole-body bioelectrical impedance., Results: Patients were 66.7 ± 7.7 years old with mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁) of 1.08 ± 0.41 L (42 ± 15% of predicted). Peak exercise IC was significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with IC at rest (r = 0.78), FEV₁(r = 0.66), FVC (r = 0.59), FFM (r = 0.38) and FFM index (r = 0.29). However, only FEV₁ and rest IC predict peak IC (r = 0.86; P < 0.01) in a multivariate linear regression analysis., Conclusions: FFM index was weakly associated with peak exercise IC in COPD patients. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with and without global fat-free mass (FFM) depletion., Design: Retrospective case-control., Setting: Outpatient clinic, university center., Participants: COPD patients (N=102) that completed PR were initially evaluated., Intervention: PR including whole-body and weight training for 12 weeks, 3 times per week., Main Outcome Measures: St. George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), and FFM evaluation applied before and after PR., Results: Patients were stratified according to their FFM status measured by bioelectric impedance. They were considered depleted if the FFM index was ≤ 15 kg/m(2) in women and ≤ 16 kg/m(2) in men. From the initial sample, all depleted patients (n=31) composed the FFM depleted group. It was composed predominantly by women (68%) with a mean age ± SD of 64.4 ± 7.3 years and a forced expiratory volume in 1 second of 33.6%=-13.2% predicted. Paired for sex and age, 31 nondepleted patients were selected from the initial sample to compose the nondepleted group. Improvement in the 6MWD was similar in these 2 groups after PR. Both groups improved SGRQ scores, although the observed power was small and did not allow adequate comparison between depleted and nondepleted patients. There was no difference between groups in weight change, whereas FFM tended to be greater in depleted patients. This increase had no correlation with the 6MWD or the SGRQ., Conclusions: Benefits of PR to exercise capacity were similar comparing FFM depleted and nondepleted COPD patients. This study evaluates the incidence of congenital syphilis in the Brazilian state of Ceará from 2000 to 2009, describes the epidemiologic profile of pregnant women whose newborns had congenital syphilis and verifies the receipt of prenatal care and treatment of their partners. It is a retrospective study that was conducted in July 2010 using a Center for Information and Analysis in Health database that contains information on National Notifiable Diseases. There were 2,930 reported cases of congenital syphilis, demonstrating an annual ascending historical series. The majority of the pregnant women were 20 to 34 years of age (n=1,836, 62.7%), illiterate or with little education (n=1623, 55.4%) and had received prenatal care (n=2077, 70.9%). The inadequate treatment of women and the lack of treatment for their partners is a reality in Ceará. The incidence of congenital syphilis is a quality indicator of prenatal care. Therefore, its increase in the last ten years highlights the necessity of syphilis control.

Aim: to assess the auditory abilities of children with non-progressive chronic encephalopathy (NPCE), independently of the presence or not of hearing loss, and of the etiology of the encephalopathy; to characterize the benefit of hearing aids in children with NPCE and hearing loss., Method: neurologic, otorhinolaryngologic and auditory assessments. Application of the Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance of Children (PEACH) protocol., Results: out of the 46 assessed children, 22 (48%) presented no hearing loss and 24 (52%) presented some level of sensorineural hearing loss. Regarding the encephalopathy etiology, most of the participants presented ischemic hypoxic encephalopathy followed by infectious process and kernicterus. The results also indicate that 16 (35%) parents suspected that their child had hearing loss; out of this total, 56% had the hearing loss confirmed. Thirty parents (65%) did not have any hearing complaints about their children. For these children the auditory evaluation indicated that 50% presented some level of hearing loss. The PEACH protocol proved to be effective to assess the benefit of hearing aids., Conclusion: the results indicate that over half of participants presented hearing loss. No correlation was observed between etiology and complaints of hearing loss. This means that it is not possible to predict hearing loss based on complaints. All children who presented hearing loss benefited from the use of hearing aids.

This in vitro study sought to evaluate the bond strength and interfacial morphology of composite restorations in primary and permanent teeth that utilized different adhesive systems. In this study, 180 samples (n = 15 per subgroup) were submitted to shear bond strength tests while 72 samples were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (n = 6 per subgroup). Fifty-four blocks of permanent enamel, 54 blocks of permanent dentin, 54 blocks of primary enamel, and 54 blocks of primary dentin were randomly assigned to three groups for bonding. All of the blocks received a resin composite restoration made with a matrix after the application of the dental bonding systems, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The shear bond strength test found no statistical differences among the tissues or the adhesive systems used. However, a difference in quality of the interfacial seal was observed when Single Bond restorations were compared to restorations bonded with AdheSE and Prompt-L-Pop. The Single Bond system formed an authentic hybrid layer that can ensure adequate adhesion. The other adhesive systems showed an interface with inadequate sealing and even with no sealing. The self-etching systems must be used with caution in composite restorations because the quality of the hybrid layer formed is as important as the bond strength when determining the efficacy of the adhesive.

This in vitro study sought to evaluate the action of a pediatric medication with low pH and high acidity in primary enamel submitted (or not) to daily applications of fluoride dentifrice. For this study, 70 blocks of primary molars (n = 10 per subgroup) were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Six subgroups (two control and four experimental) were submitted to different treatments for 10 days. Microscopically, the enamel blocks of the subgroups that received medication and fluoride demonstrated the largest areas of partially or totally conditioned superficial enamel. The opposite was observed in the subgroups that were not exposed to fluoride; erosions in the internal enamel and in the transition zone between deep enamel and dentine showed superior percentiles. It was concluded that the medication modified the morphology of the primary enamel and that the use of fluoride was able to reduce the erosive effect of the formulation.

Rapid orthodontic extrusion is indicated for cases involving biological space invasion of the periodontal ligament in which the surgical increase of the clinical crown can compromise esthetics or the support of the adjacent teeth. This article presents the case report of a tooth with radicular perforation 1.0 mm below the bone crest. A procedure to restore the biological distances was necessary. Rapid orthodontic extrusion of the affected tooth, with anchorage in the adjacent osseointegrated implants, was selected.

This study evaluated the results obtained by two space-regaining devices in children with mixed dentition and premature loss of mandibular deciduous molars. There were no statistical differences between the amount of space regained by each device; however, the distalizing screw regained space at a faster rate.

The Pediatric Dentistry Clinic staff of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) treated a 5-year-old patient who had multiple dental treatment necessities. He also had cystic fibrosis (CF). As CF is an incurable disease that affects the mucous glands, especially the ones related to the lungs and digestive organs, the patient presented both chronic respiratory and intestinal problems. Such problems resulted in a severely compromised nutritional status. Patients who have CF may present problems in oral health because they receive food supplementation that is rich in carbohydrates. Behavioral changes of such patients when in contact with health professionals are also a point to consider because these changes may make the treatment difficult. That is the reason why oral complications imposed by the disease, as well as the psychological aspects related to it, need to be discussed so that treatment is given to the patient aiming at physical and emotional comfort.

Increased overall exposure of the Brazilian population to fluoridated water and fluoridated dentifrices has been identified as the main factor in the reduction of caries prevalence. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the distribution of caries in a group of 437 children ranging from 6 to 12 years of age, residing in a city without a water supply fluoridation system and without a preventive dentistry program, with the aim of orienting future health measures towards improved cost-effectiveness. Clinical examination was performed on all the children, focusing on the indices defs (decayed, extracted, and filled primary dentition surfaces) and DMFS (decayed, missing, and filled permanent dentition surfaces), representing the number of dental surfaces that were either decayed, missing or with extraction indicated, or restored. Analysis of accumulated disease frequency in relation to the population showed that 37% of the children presented 70% of all the tooth disease, with a mean defs + DMFS of 28.6. This distribution demonstrates the phenomenon of polarization, in which most of the disease and treatment needs are concentrated in a small portion of the population.

Background: Animal studies have suggested that home bleaching agents can cause morphological alterations and changes in the proliferative rate of oral epithelium., Methods: A bleaching agent containing 10% carbamide peroxide with carbopol was used in 11 women (five smokers and six non-smokers) during a 5-week period. Two biopsies were performed, one of them 15 days before the beginning of the home bleaching treatment and the other immediately after the 5-week bleaching treatment. Two analyses were performed in the histological sections obtained from the biopsies: epithelium morphometry and assessment of the epithelium's proliferative activity by proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry., Results: The home bleaching agent increases epithelium thickness and the PCNA index in both smoker and non-smoker patients., Conclusion: Carbamide peroxide (10%) caused an augmentation in the proliferative activity within the basal and parabasal layers of the gingival epithelium, resulting in a change in this tissue's morphometry.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of plaque control performed with electric and manual toothbrushes. Fifteen children with primary dentition and 14 children with mixed dentition were divided in two groups and randomly assigned to utilize a manual or an electric toothbrush. In the first session, professional plaque removal was performed, and the children spent 24 hours without brushing their teeth. In the second session, plaque was disclosed and assessed on all facial and lingual surfaces. After that, all children brushed their teeth with the predetermined toothbrush. The next procedure was the disclosure and measurement of residual plaque. After a period of 7 days, the children switched the kind of toothbrush, and the same procedures were repeated. According to the statistical analysis of the results, there were no significant differences concerning plaque removal when the toothbrushes were utilized by children with mixed dentition. On the other hand, the electric toothbrush promoted significantly greater plaque removal on the lingual surfaces of teeth from children with primary dentition.

A 47-year-old man with a six-month history of progressive tetraparesis and sphincter disturbances developed tetraplegy after two years and died. A cervical MRI revealed an ill-defined, enhancing lesion from C1 to C6, internally attached to the dura mater and compressing the spinal cord. At necropsy, eight whitish nodes and diffuse thickening of the dura mater from C1 to C6 were found. Histological studies revealed multiple en plaque lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningiomas. The radiologic and pathologic aspects of lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma are reviewed and the atypical features of this case, such as macroscopic appearance and the histological variant, are described.

Myelin phagocytosis during Wallerian degeneration and immune-mediated demyelination depends on the action of mononuclear cells of the monocyte/macrophage system. The present study investigated the role of the macrophage scavenger receptor, a trimeric membrane glycoprotein, in myelin uptake by macrophages. Two in vitro models of myelin phagocytosis were used: an organ culture model of mouse peripheral nerves exposed to cocultured macrophages and a quantitative flow cytometric assay. Different concentrations of the monoclonal rat anti-mouse scavenger receptor antibody (2F8) were applied to these systems to selectively block the macrophage scavenger receptor. Concentration-dependent effects on macrophage migration and myelin uptake were seen when the macrophage scavenger receptor was blocked by the antibody 2F8. Low concentrations reduced myelin phagocytosis by the invading macrophages; higher concentrations completely abolished macrophage invasion of the nerves. Using a quantitative flow cytometric assay it was also shown that the 2F8 antibody inhibits phagocytosis of myelin in a dose-dependent manner. These data indicate that the macrophage scavenger receptor is involved in myelin phagocytosis by macrophages.
