Abstract: We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from s=200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C4/C2, C5/C1, and C6/C2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C5/C1 and C6/C2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

Abstract: We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to 4th order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=7.7 to 200 GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations.

Abstract: The differential cross section for Z0 production, measured as a function of the boson's transverse momentum (pT), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p+p →W/Z+X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z0/γ⁎ differential cross section as a function of its pT in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z0/γ⁎ total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z0/γ⁎ TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Abstract: We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=510 GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range 0.23≤−t≤0.67 GeV2. This is the only measurement of the proton-proton elastic cross section in this t range for collision energies above the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and below the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliders. We find that a constant slope B does not fit the data in the aforementioned t range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for B(t). This is the first measurement below the LHC energies for which the non-constant behavior B(t) is observed. The t dependence of B is also determined using six subintervals of t in the STAR measured t range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section dσ/dt agrees well with the results obtained at s=540 GeV for proton–antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR t-range is σelfid=462.1±0.9(stat.)±1.1(syst.)±11.6(scale) μb.

Abstract: Density fluctuations near the QCD critical point can be probed via an intermittency analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report the first measurement of intermittency in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 7.7-200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The scaled factorial moments of identified charged hadrons are analyzed at mid-rapidity and within the transverse momentum phase space. We observe a power-law behavior of scaled factorial moments in Au+Au collisions and a decrease in the extracted scaling exponent (ν) from peripheral to central collisions. The ν is consistent with a constant for different collisions energies in the mid-central (10-40%) collisions. Moreover, the ν in the 0-5% most central Au+Au collisions exhibits a non-monotonic energy dependence that reaches a minimum around sNN = 27 GeV. The physics implications on the QCD phase structure are discussed.

Abstract: A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity |η|

Abstract: The linear and mode-coupled contributions to higher-order anisotropic flow are presented for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 27, 39, 54.4, and 200 GeV and compared to similar measurements for Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The coefficients and the flow harmonics' correlations, which characterize the linear and mode-coupled response to the lower-order anisotropies, indicate a beam energy dependence consistent with an influence from the specific shear viscosity (η/s). In contrast, the dimensionless coefficients, mode-coupled response coefficients, and normalized symmetric cumulants are approximately beam-energy independent, consistent with a significant role from initial-state effects. These measurements could provide unique supplemental constraints to (i) distinguish between different initial-state models and (ii) delineate the temperature (T) and baryon chemical potential (μB) dependence of the specific shear viscosity ηs(T,μB).

Abstract: Measurements of mass and Λ binding energy of Λ4H and Λ4He in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV are presented, with an aim to address the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) problem in hypernuclei systems with atomic number A = 4. The Λ binding energies are measured to be 2.22±0.06(stat.)±0.14(syst.) MeV and 2.38±0.13(stat.)±0.12(syst.) MeV for Λ4H and Λ4He, respectively. The measured Λ binding-energy difference is 0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV for ground states. Combined with the γ-ray transition energies, the binding-energy difference for excited states is −0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV, which is negative and comparable to the value of the ground states within uncertainties. These new measurements on the Λ binding-energy difference in A = 4 hypernuclei systems are consistent with the theoretical calculations that result in ΔBΛ4(1exc+)≈−ΔBΛ4(0g.s.+)

Abstract: In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Abstract: Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAu, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψ yield in p+Au collisions to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψ yield in both p+p and p+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J/ψ RpAu is derived within the transverse momentum (pT) range of 0 to 10 GeV/c. A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for pT

Abstract: A numerical model that describes the operation behaviors and output characteristics of stable gain-switched Tm-doped fiber (Tm:fiber) lasers resonantly pumped at 1.56 mm is presented in this paper. Effects of some important laser parameters, such as repetition rates, pump power levels, transmission of the laser output coupler, fiber core sizes, fiber lengths, Tm concentrations, etc., on laser output were investigated. The model and simulating results were verified by preliminary experiments and good agreements have been achieved, suggesting that the model are useful for design and optimization of stable gain-switched Tm:fiber lasers at 2 mm wavelength region.

Abstract: We report on high-power, efficient operation of a widely tunable, cladding pumped Tm:fiber laser using a volume Bragg grating (VBG) for wavelength selection and spectral narrowing. The operating wavelength was tunable from 1943 to 1998 nm, with > 53 W output power over a tuning range of 50 nm from 1948 nm to 1998 nm and a spectral linewidth of 10 pm. Over 58.1 W of diffraction limited (M2 ~ 1.5) CW output power was generated for 143.6 W of launched pump power at 792 nm, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 45%.

Abstract: Pedestrian detection is a hot and difficulty topic in computer vision. This paper presents a zenithal pedestrian detection algorithm designed with the circular feature of pedestrian head in case of top view. It is a reliable pedestrian detection strategy for intelligent illumination control system. The active edge detection algorithm mextracts the pedestrian edge, and grads Hough transform detects the circular feature of pedestrian head. Abstract: Highly efficient room-temperature operation of a Ho:YAG laser end pumped by a cladding-pumped tunable Tm-doped silica-fibre laser operating at 1905 nm is reported. Using a simple two-mirror resonator configuration, we obtained 6.4 W of unpolarized output at 2097 nm in a diffraction-limited TEM00 beam (with M2≈1.1) for 9.6 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to incident pump power of 80% and an optical-to-optical efficiency of 67%. Using a folded-resonator configuration incorporating a Brewster-angled glass plate, we obtained 5.8 W of linearly polarized TEM00 output, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of ∼60%. Abstract: High power and widely tunable operation of Tm-doped silica fiber laser around 2 μm has been demonstrated using volume Bragg grating as the wavelength selection and spectrum narrowing element. The operating wavelength was continuously tunable from 1930 to 1821 nm, with > 52 W output power over a tuning range of 104 nm and a relatively narrow spectra width of < 15 pm. Over 60.8 W of diffraction limited (M2 ~ 1.5) CW output power was generated for 137 W of launched pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 46%. Output characteristics with a conventional replica diffraction grating for wavelength selection were also investigated as a comparison with that of using a volume Bragg grating. A maximum output power of 30.6 W at 1963 nm was generated for 79 W of launched pump power and the lasing wavelength could be tuned over 196 nm from 1859 to 2055 nm at output power levels in excess of 20 W. The bandwidth of the laser output was ~ 0.8 nm.

Abstract: We report on high-power operation of a widely tunable dual-wavelength Tm:fiber laser in the 2 microm spectral region using volume Bragg gratings and a simple resonator configuration for wavelength selection. The wavelength splitting range is continuously tunable from 1 to 50 nm (0.1-3.8 THz), with115 W of diffraction-limited total output power for wavelength separations of40 nm. A maximum output power of 118 W was obtained for 279 W of launched pump power at 792 nm, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 45%. The prospects for further improvement in performance are discussed.

Abstract: Efficient operation of a cladding pumped high power Tm: fiber laser with a volume Bragg grating (VBG) as wavelength selective and spectrally narrowing element is reported. The laser yielded over 112 W of diffraction limited output at 1988 nm with a spectral linewidth of ~12 pm for 279 W of launched pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 43.4%. No discernable difference was observed in terms of output power and slope efficiency when using a broadband highly reflective mirror in place of the VBG.

Abstract: Scaling of laser power and brightness to meet the needs of ever-demanding applications is a demanding task which continues to preoccupy many within the laser community. In conventional 'bulk' solid-state lasers the main obstacle is heat generation in the laser medium and its associated detrimental effects. Methods for combating these problems have been the focus of much research, resulting in many novel laser geometries with improved thermal management and reduced thermal lensing, but often at the expense of increased complexity and reduced flexibility. An alternative approach, which is beginning to attract a great deal of interest, is to operate the laser with the laser medium maintained at cryogenic temperatures (~77 K), where the effects of heat loading are dramatically reduced due to a large increase in thermal conductivity and a large decrease in the temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT) and expansion coefficient [1]. In host materials such as YAG the net reduction in thermal effects can be over 50 times compared to operation at room temperature. In the case of diode-pumped Yb:YAG lasers, the combined effect of a massive reduction in thermo-optic aberrations and lower re-absorption loss has allowed very impressive results to be achieved in terms of output power and beam quality from relatively simple laser resonator configurations [2]. In this paper we report on preliminary work ultimately aimed at achieving a further reduction in thermal effects by combining the advantages of cryogenic cooling with a very low quantum defect fibre-laser-pumping of bulk solid-state lasers. Here we describe preliminary results for a cryogenically-cooled Ho:YAG laser in-band pumped by a high-power Tm-doped silica fibre laser.

Abstract: Cryogenically-cooled diode-pumped lasers have received significant interest in recent years for their demonstrated orders of magnitude improvement in output radiance using simple laser resonator configurations. Here we present a technique that offers the potential for a further order of magnitude improvement utilising the in-band-pumping hybrid-laser architecture to excite cryogenically-cooled bulk gain media. Preliminary results will be discussed, for a narrow linewidth Tm:fiber MOPA system operating in the 100W regime, pumping a cryogenically cooled Ho:YAG gain element, and employing a simple cavity configuration. Low quantum defect operation and power-scaling potential will be discussed.

Over 15 W of combined output power was generated for a launched pump power of 50.3 W. The corresponding slope efficiency with respect the launched pump power was 42%. The bandwidth (FWHM) of the emission spectrum was ˜ 282 nm at an output power of 8 mW and ˜ 45nm at the highest output power of 15 W.

Abstract: High power operation of an ytterbium-doped multi-core ribbon fiber laser and a cladding pumped ytterbium-doped helical core fiber laser is reported. 320W laser output at 1045nm was demonstrated with a 10-core ytterbium doped ribbon fibre. Efficient single-mode operation of a cladding-pumped ytterbium-doped helical-core fiber laser with a 30 µm diameter core and a numerical aperture of 0.087 have also been demonstrated. The laser yielded 60.4 W of output at 1043 nm in a beam with M 1.4 for 92.6 W launched pump power from a diode stack at 976 nm. Further more, the recently progress of a cladding-pumped ytterbium-doped helical-core superfluorescent fiber source is also reported. The highly efficient operation of the helical core fiber ASE source yielded 107W of amplified spontaneous emission output spanning the wavelength range from 1030-1160nm with a bandwidth (FWHM) of 37nm.

Abstract: We report on recent progress in power scaling of cladding-pumped Er,Yb and Tm-doped silica fiber lasers in the ~1.5μm and ~2μm spectral regimes respectively, and also on some recent developments in fiber-bulk hybrid lasers based Er:YAG and Ho:YAG operating at ~1.6μm and ~2.1μm respectively. A cladding-pumped Tm-doped silica fiber laser pumped by a beam-shaped diode-stack at 790nm and with core composition optimized for efficient 'two-for-one' cross-relaxation yielded 66W of continuous-wave output at ~2μm for 117W of launched pump power. The corresponding slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power was 61%. An Er,Yb fibre laser, cladding-pumped by two spatially-multiplexed diode-stacks at 976nm and with core composition optimized for efficient energy-transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+, yielded up to 188W of continuous-wave output at 1570nm with an average slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 41%. The prospects for a further increase in output power from Tm and Er,Yb fiber lasers are considered. Efficient operation of hybrid Er:YAG and Ho:YAG lasers, pumped in-band by Er,Yb and Tm doped fibre lasers operating at 1532nm and 1907nm respectively has been demonstrated. Both lasers, when operated in continuous-wave mode, had slope efficiencies with respect to incident pump power of ~80%. The Er:YAG laser produced ~60W of continuous-wave output at 1645.3nm for 82 W of incident pump power, and, in Q-switched mode, produced pulses of energy, ~5.5mJ and duration, ~81ns (FWHM) corresponding to a peak power of ~67kW at a repetition rate of 500Hz for an incident pump power limited by the onset damage to 16.8W. The prospects for further improvement in continuous-wave and Q-switched performance are discussed.

Abstract: In this paper, we report highly efficient operation of Tm-doped silica fibre lasers, pumped by a high-power cladding-pumped Er,Yb fibre laser at 1565 nm, in both cladding-pumped and core-pumped resonator configurations. In the cladding-pumped Tm fibre laser we obtained up to 19 W of output at 1991 nm with a slope efficiency of 69% with respect to absorbed pump power, and in the core-pumped laser we obtained a maximum output power of 12.1 W at 1860 nm limited by available pump power. Using tunable cavity configurations the cladding-pumped and core-pumped Tm fibre lasers could be tuned from 1861 to 2061 nm and from 1725 to 1973 nm at multi-watt power levels respectively

Abstract: Cladding-pumped fibre lasers are becoming increasingly attractive for high power generation due to their high efficiency and immunity from thermal effects. However, due to their small core size and long device length, pulse energies are rather limited. In contrast, conventional 'bulk' solid-state lasers offer the prospect of much higher pulse energies, but suffer from detrimental thermal effects which can degrade beam quality and efficiency. An alternative strategy for scaling output power and pulse energy, which is attracting growing interest, is to use a hybrid laser scheme. In this approach, the fibre laser is used as a high-brightness source for in-band pumping of a bulk solid-state laser. One of the main attractions of the fiber-bulk hybrid laser scheme is that most of the heat generated via quantum defect heating is deposited in the fibre, and thermal effects in the bulk laser are dramatically reduced leading to the prospect of much improved efficiency, beam quality, higher average output power and high pulse energy. This approach has already been successfully applied to a number of different solid-state lasers operating in the eyesafe wavelength regimes around 1.6 μ and 2 μm. This presentation will review recent progress in power scaling of hybrid lasers in cw and in pulsed modes of operation, and will consider the prospects for further improvement in performance.

Abstract: An efficient double-clad erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber laser pumped by two high-power diode-stacks at 975nm is reported. Using a simple external cavity configuration at one end of the fiber and the 3.6% Fresnel reflection from a cleaved fiber end facet at the opposite end of the fiber to provide the necessary feedback for lasing, we obtained a maximum output power of 159W at 1565nm in a beam with beam quality factor (M2) similar to 1.9 for 466W of launched pump power. The corresponding slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power was 34%. The maximum output power was limited by the available pump power. A strategy for increasing the output power and improving the beam quality based on the use of a double-clad fiber design with a helical-core trajectory is considered.

Abstract: Recently, ytterbium-sensitization was developed for thulium-doped fibers for operation at ~2µm. In these, pump energy at 910-980nm is absorbed by the Yb Here, we present further power-scaling of a cladding-pumped Tm:Yb codoped fiber laser. A Tm:Yb codoped preform was fabricated at the OFTC in Sydney. From this, a double-clad fiber was drawn at the ORC in Southampton. The fiber had a 18.5µm diameter, 0.22 NA aluminosilicate core doped with Tm and Yb in equal concentrations (weight fraction 2%). The pure-silica inner cladding had a 300µm diameter, D-shaped geometry. The inner cladding was coated with a low-index polymer for pump waveguiding. The absorption at the pump wavelength (975nm) was 4 dB/m. A 2.5m long TYDF was used in the experiments. The laser cavity was formed between a perpendicularly cleaved fiber facet at the pump launch end and an external, lens-coupled dichroic mirror in the other end of the cavity. A diode-stack pump source was launched into the TYDF. The fiber laser output was taken from the pump launch end via a dichroic mirror, HR around 2µm. The slope efficiency was 26% and the threshold was 7 W with respect to launched pump power. The maximum output power (75W) was limited by failure of the core at the out-coupling facet. We did not measure the beam quality or the emission spectrum, but we did determine that the laser operated in the 2µm wavelength range. Emission at ~1µm was negligible.

Abstract: In-band pumping of Ho-doped solid-state lasers by a cladding-pumped Tm fiber laser is an attractive route to high output power and high pulse energy in the eyesafe two-micron spectral region. This approach combines the advantages of fiber lasers and crystal solid-state lasers with relative immunity from the effects of thermal loading, nonlinear loss processes (e.g. stimulated Brillouin scattering) and energy-transfer-upconversion. The use of a Tm-doped fiber laser as the pump source allows a great deal of flexibility, since the broad emission linewidth allows the wavelength to be tuned over a very wide range spanning the absorption lines of interest in Ho:YLF, Ho:YAG and many other Ho-doped crystals. In this paper, we report efficient operation of Ho:YAG and Ho:YLF lasers pumped by a tunable Tm-doped silica fiber laser. The lasing wavelength of the Tm-doped fibre laser could be tuned over 150nm from ~1860 to 2010nm with a relatively narrow linewidth (6.4W of TEMoo output was obtained from a Ho:YAG laser at 2.1µm at the maximum incident pump power of 9.6W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 67%, and the slope efficiency with respect to incident pump power was 80%. By comparison, for a similar resonator design, 4.8W of output at 2.07µm was generated from a Ho:YLF laser at an incident pump power of 9.4W, corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 51%. Using a simple ring resonator geometry and an acousto-optic modulator to enforce unidirectional operation, we have obtained 3.7W of single-longitudinal-mode output from a Ho:YAG laser. The prospects for further improvement in performance and higher output power will be discussed.

Abstract: Efficient single-frequency operation of a Ho:YAG ring laser at room temperature with a traveling-wave TeO2 acousto-optic modulator to enforce unidirectional operation is reported. By use of a 2-at.% Ho3+-doped 10-mm-long Ho:YAG rod, end pumped by a cladding-pumped tunable Tm-doped silica fiber operating at 1.9 µm, the Ho:YAG ring laser yielded 3.7 W of single-frequency output at 2.1 µm in a diffraction-limited TEM_00 beam with M2 < 1.1 for an incident pump power of 8.8 W. The rf power required for unidirectional operation was 0.3 W and corresponded to an increase in cavity loss for the lasing direction (due to diffraction) of only 0.5%. The prospects for further improvement in efficiency are discussed.

Abstract: A double-clad thulium-doped silica fibre laser, pumped by two beam-shaped diode-bars operating at 787-790nm, has yielded 14W of single-mode output at ~2nm, with a slope efficiency with respect to launched power of 46%. Using a tunable laser configuration, comprising an external cavity with a diffraction grating, a maximum output power of 10.5W at 1921nm has been obtained, and wavelength tuning at multi-watt power levels over 215nm from 1855 to 2070nm has been demonstrated. The prospects for further improvement in performance will be discussed. In addition, a simple approach for further scaling of power levels from fibre lasers in the two-micron regime, based on intracavity wavelength combining of multiple fibre lasers is described. In a preliminary demonstration, four cladding-pumped thulium-doped silica fibre lasers are wavelength-combined yielding an output power >14W. The prospects for further increase in output power via this approach will be discussed.

Abstract: We report on the high-power and high-efficiency operation of a polycrystalline Ho:YAG ceramic laser in-band pumped by a Tm fiber laser at ~1907 nm. Lasing characteristics of a 1.5 at.% and a 2.0 at.% Ho³⁺-doped YAG ceramic were investigated and compared. Using an output coupler of 6% transmission, over 21.4 W of cw output power at 2097 nm has been generated with the 1.5 at.% doped Ho:YAG ceramic under 35 W of incident pump power, corresponding to an average slope efficiency with respect to the incident pump power of 63.6% and an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 61.1%.

Abstract: We report on the high-power and efficient operation of a polycrystalline ceramic erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:Y3Al5O12, Er:YAG) laser resonantly pumped by a cladding-pumped Er,Yb fiber laser. The pump fiber laser was wavelength-locked to the absorption peak of Er:YAG at ~1532 nm using a volume Bragg grating. The ceramic laser yielded 13.8 W of continuous-wave output at 1645 nm for 27.3 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 54.5% with respect to the incident pump power. The laser output characteristics of different Er3+ doping levels are compared, and the prospects for improvement in lasing efficiency and output power are discussed.

Abstract: Narrow-linewidth and high-power operation of a cladding-pumped Tm:fiber laser has been demonstrated using a pair of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) for effective spectral narrowing. The laser yielded 113 W of diffraction-limited continuous-wave output at 1990 nm with a narrow linewidth of ~2.2 pm (full width at half maximum) for 279 W of launched pump power, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the narrowest linewidth demonstrated to date from high-power Tm:fiber lasers using VBG technique. The lasing slope efficiency with respect to the launched pump power at 972 nm was ~43%. Prospects for further spectral narrowing and widely tunable operation are considered.

Abstract: A high-power Er:YAG laser that is in-band pumped by a high-power cladding-pumped erbium-ytterbium codoped fiber laser operating at 1532 nm is reported. The Er:YAG laser produced 60.3 W of continuous-wave output at 1645.3 nm in a beam with M2 approximately equal to 3 for 82 W of incident pump power and 20 W of TEM00 output with M21.2 for 32.4 W of incident pump power. The slope efficiency with respect to incident pump power at pump powers of20 W was approximately 81%. In the Q-switched mode of operation, a slightly modified resonator configuration incorporating an electro-optic Q switch produced pulses of approximately 4 mJ energy and approximately 100 ns (FWHM) duration, corresponding to a peak power of approximately 42 kW at a repetition rate of 1 kHz for an incident pump power of 16.8 W. The prospects for further improvement in continuous-wave and Q-switched performance are discussed.

46. Highly efficient Er,Yb-doped fiber laser with 188W free-running and > 100W tunable output power

Abstract: Efficient high-power operation of an erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber laser cladding-pumped by two spatially-multiplexed and polarization combined 975 nm diode-stacks is reported. Up to 188 W of continuous-wave output at 1.57 microm was generated with a beam-quality factor (M;2) of 1.9 and an overall slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power of 41% (and 43% for output powers120W). Tunable operation was demonstrated by use of an external cavity containing a diffraction grating and a maximum output power of 108 W at 1538 nm was generated for a launched pump power of ~ 336 W. The operating wavelength was tunable from 1531 to 1571 nm, with100W output power over a tuning range of 36 nm from 1532 nm to 1568 nm.

Abstract: An ytterbium-sensitised thulium-doped silica fibre laser that generates up to 75 W of output power in the 2 µm wavelength range when cladding-pumped by a 975 nm diode stack is reported. The slope efficiency is 32% with respect to the launched pump power and the beam quality factor (M) is 1.3.

Abstract: Highly oriented poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) films were stressed in a miniature hydraulic tensile tester interfaced to a fast scanning Fourier transform infra-red spectrometer. The changes in relative intensity, polarization, frequency and shape of infrared bands have been useful in the elucidation of microstructures. With the short time resolution achievable, vibrational bandshape and frequency have been shown to change at different rates when an external stress was applied.
