In the novel stoichiometric iron-based material RbEuFe4As4 superconductivity coexists with a peculiar long-range magnetic order of Eu 4f states; their coexistance is puzzling and represents a challenge for both experiment and theory. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, Andreev reflection spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have addressed this puzzle and unambigously shown that Fe- and Eu-derived states are largely decoupled and that superconducting and a long range magnetic orders exist almost independently from each other.

Discovered in 1962, the divalent ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS (TC = 16.5 K, Eg = 1.65 eV) has remained constantly relevant to the engineering of novel magnetically active interfaces, heterostructures, and multilayer sequences and to combination with topological materials. Because detailed information on the electronic structure of EuS and, in particular, its evolution across TC is not well-represented in the literature but is essential for the development of new functional systems, the present work aims at filling this gap. Our angle-resolved photoemission measurements complemented with first-principles calculations demonstrate how the electronic structure of EuS evolves across a paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition. Our results emphasize the importance of the strong Eu 4f–S 3p mixing for exchange-magnetic splittings of the sulfur-derived bands as well as coupling between f and d orbitals of neighboring Eu atoms to derive the value of TC accurately. Efficient control over the grain boundaries (GBs) is a vital aspect in optimizing the graphene growth conditions. A number of methods for visualization of GBs were developed for graphene grown on weakly interacting surfaces. Here, we utilize oxygen intercalation to reveal GBs and study their morphology for graphene strongly bound to the cobalt surface. We demonstrate that upon the intercalation of oxygen, GBs in polycrystalline graphene become easily detectable due to graphene cracking and selective oxidation of the substrate, thus giving a direct insight into the graphene micro- and nanostructure by means of different electron microscopy methods, including scanning electron microscopy, photoemission microscopy and low-energy electron microscopy.

Embedding foreign atoms in graphene and interchanging the underlying substrate are proved to be efficient methods for manipulating the properties of graphene. Combining ARPES experiments with DFT calculations we show that boron-doped graphene (B-graphene) grown on a Co(0001) substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) becomes hole doped and its Fermi surface near the K-point reveals strongly spin-polarized states. The latter stems from the spin-polarized mini Dirac cone that is an intrinsic two-dimensional feature of the graphene/Co(0001) interface and is formed by a mixture of C 2pz and Co 3d states. Since the CVD method allows the achievement of up to 20 at% of incorporated B atoms, this provides a certain flexibility for handling the spin-polarized properties of the system. We also show that the bonding of the B-graphene layer to the Co(0001) substrate can be released by intercalation of Li into the interface. This allows the exploration of the doping effect in detail. Finally, our ARPES data indicate a gap opening in the Dirac cone as a result of the highly unbalanced boron concentrations in the two graphene sublattices., We thank Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) for the allocation of synchrotron radiation beamtimes at the Russian-German and UE112-PGM1 beamlines. Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are fluorinated using (1) fluorine F2 at 200 °C, (2) gaseous BrF3 at room temperature, and (3) CF4 radio-frequency plasma functionalization. These have been comparatively studied using transmission electron microscopy and infrared, Raman, X-ray photoelectron, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. A formation of covalent C–F bonds and a considerable reduction in the intensity of radial breathing modes from the outer shells of DWCNTs are observed for all samples. Differences in the electronic state of fluorine and the C–F vibrations for three kinds of the fluorinated DWCNTs are attributed to distinct local surroundings of the attached fluorine atoms. Possible fluorine patterns realized through a certain fluorination technique are revealed from comparison of experimental NEXAFS F K-edge spectra with quantum-chemical calculations of various models. It is proposed that fluorination with F2 and BrF3 produces small fully fluorinated areas and short fluorinated chains, respectively, while the treatment with CF4 plasma results in various attached species, including single or paired fluorine atoms and –CF3 groups.
