Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

2. Modeling electron temperature profiles in the pedestal with simple formulas for ETG transport

Abstract

This paper reports on the refinement (building on (Hatch D.R. et al 2022 Phys. Plasmas 29 062501)) and application of simple formulas for electron heat transport from electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven turbulence in the pedestal. The formulas are improved by (1) improving the parameterization for certain key parameters and (2) carefully accounting for the impact of geometry and shaping in the underlying gyrokinetic simulation database. Comparisons with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of ETG transport in the MAST pedestal demonstrate the model’s applicability to spherical tokamaks in addition to standard aspect ratio tokamaks. We identify bounds for model applicability: the model is accurate in the steep gradient region, where the ETG turbulence is largely slab-like, but accuracy decreases as the temperature gradient becomes weaker in the pedestal top. We use the formula to model the electron temperature profile in the pedestal for four experimental scenarios while extensively varying input parameters to represent uncertainties. In all cases, the predicted electron temperature profile exhibits extreme sensitivity to separatrix temperature and density, which has implications for core-edge integration. The model reproduces the electron temperature profile for high $\eta_e = L_{ne}/L_{Te}$ scenarios but not for low η _e scenarios in which microtearing modes (MTMs) have been identified. We develop a proof-of-concept model for MTM transport and explore the relative roles of ETG and MTM in setting the electron temperature profile.

Abstract

A fundamental dynamical constraint—that fluctuation induced charge-weighted particle flux must vanish- can prevent instabilities from accessing the free energy in the strong gradients characteristic of Transport Barriers (TBs). Density gradients, when large enough, lead to a violation of the constraint and hence preclude unstable modes and turbulent transport. This mechanism, then, broadens the class of configurations (in magnetized plasmas) where these high confinement states can be formed and sustained. The need for velocity shear, the conventional agent for TB formation, is obviated. The most important ramifications of the constraint is to permit a charting out of the domains conducive to TB formation and hence to optimally confined fusion worthy states; the detailed investigation is conducted through new analytic methods and extensive gyrokinetic simulations.

Abstract

A gyrokinetic threshold model for pedestal width–height scaling prediction is applied to multiple devices. A shaping and aspect ratio scan is performed on National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) equilibria, finding $\Delta_{\mathrm{ped}} = 0.92 A^{1.04} \kappa^{-1.24} 0.38^{\delta} \beta_{\theta,\mathrm{ped}}^{1.05}$ for the wide-pedestal branch with pedestal width $\Delta_{\mathrm{ped}}$ , aspect ratio A , elongation κ , triangularity δ , and normalized pedestal height $\beta_{\theta,\mathrm{ped}}$ . The width–transport scaling is found to vary significantly if the pedestal height is varied either with a fixed density or fixed temperature, showing how fueling and heating sources affect the pedestal density and temperature profiles for the kinetic-ballooning-mode (KBM) limited profiles. For an NSTX equilibrium, at fixed density, the wide branch is $\Delta_{\mathrm{ped} } = 0.028 \left(q_\textrm e/\Gamma_\textrm e - 1.7 \right)^{1.5} \sim \eta_\textrm e ^{1.5}$ and at fixed temperature $\Delta_{\mathrm{ped} } = 0.31 \left(q_\textrm e/\Gamma_\textrm e - 4.7 \right)^{0.85}$ $ \sim \eta_\textrm e ^{0.85}$ , where $q_\textrm e$ and $\Gamma_\textrm e$ are turbulent electron heat and particle fluxes and $\eta_\textrm e = \nabla \ln T_\textrm e / \nabla \ln n_\textrm e$ for an electron temperature $T_\textrm e$ and density $n_\textrm e$ . Pedestals close to the KBM limit are shown to have modified turbulent transport coefficients compared to the strongly driven KBMs. The role of flow shear is studied as a width–height scaling constraint and pedestal saturation mechanism for a standard and lithiated wide pedestal discharge. Finally, the stability, transport, and flow shear constraints are combined and examined for an NSTX experiment.

Abstract

The results of a gyrokinetic analysis of turbulent transport driven by the electron temperature gradient (ETG) in the MAST pedestal are presented. Local nonlinear simulations from the gyrokinetic code, GENE, show that heat flux produced by ETG turbulence is 10%–30% of the total applied heating power in the upper pedestal and pedestal top during both the pre-edge-localized mode (ELM) (80%–99% inter-ELM period) and post-ELM (0%–20%) periods. Increasing strongly with the ETG, the ETG transport appears to be stiff. Considering radiation losses, ion thermal transport, and the strong sensitivity of the transport to the ETG, we propose that ETG transport is a plausible mechanism mediating the inter-ELM temperature profile on MAST. Cognizant of the possibility that sharp variations in the pedestal profiles may violate the local approximation, we conducted global nonlinear simulations; the results are in good agreement with local simulations except near the pedestal top, where extended radial structures and high transport levels (far beyond experimental) develop in the local simulations. We quantify and parameterize the discrepancy between local and global simulations by calculating the ratio of the radial correlation length to a length scale representative of the profile curvature. When this ratio is sufficiently small, local and global simulations agree as expected.

6. Isotope mass dependence of pedestal transport in JET H-mode plasmas

Abstract

We present a comparative transport analysis of the isotope mass dependence in the pedestal of two pairs of deuterium/hydrogen type I ELMy H-mode discharges in JET with ITER-like wall, one characterized by the same input power, the other one by the same stored energy. The investigation, carried out using the gyrokinetic code GENE, focuses on the steep profile region of the pedestal. While large wavenumber modes mainly contribute to the electron heat flux and are scarcely influenced by the main gas isotope, an effect of the ion mass in agreement with the experimental (so called anti-gyro-Bohm) scaling is revealed in the low wavenumber range. In this context, the major role played by the ${E\!\times\!B}$ shear in regulating the ion-temperature-gradient turbulence is analyzed in some detail. The competing level of turbulent and neoclassical transport is quantified to shed light on the experimental features of the pedestal profiles at different ion mass, with the particle transport found to be consistent with a higher pedestal top density for increasing isotope masses, and the heat transport shown to match the roughly unaltered observed temperature profiles.

Abstract

Experimental data on electromagnetic fluctuations in DIII-D, made available by the Faraday-effect radial interferometer-polarimeter (RIP) diagnostic Chen (2016 Rev. Sci. Instrum. 87 11E108), is examined in comparison with detailed gyrokinetic simulations using gyrokinetic electromagnetic numerical experiment (GENE). The diagnostic has the unique capability of making internal measurements of fluctuating magnetic fields ∫ n e δ B r d R ∫ n e d R . Local linear simulations identify microtearing modes (MTMs) over a substantial range of toroidal mode numbers (peaking at n = 15) with frequencies in good agreement with the experimental data. Local nonlinear simulations reinforce this result by producing a magnetic frequency spectrum in good agreement with that diagnosed by RIP. Simulated heat fluxes are in the range of experimental expectations. However, magnetic fluctuation amplitudes are substantially lower than the experimental expectations. Possible sources of this discrepancy are discussed, notably the fact that the diagnostics are localized at the mid-plane—the poloidal location where the simulations predict the fluctuation amplitudes to be smallest. Despite some discrepancies, several connections between simulations and experiments, combined with general criteria discriminating between potential pedestal instabilities, strongly point to MTMs as the source of the observed magnetic fluctuations.

Abstract

Nonlinear multiscale gyrokinetic simulations of a Joint European Torus edge pedestal are used to show that electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) turbulence has a rich three-dimensional structure, varying strongly according to the local magnetic-field configuration. In the plane normal to the magnetic field, the steep pedestal electron temperature gradient gives rise to anisotropic turbulence with a radial (normal) wavelength much shorter than in the binormal direction. In the parallel direction, the location and parallel extent of the turbulence are determined by the variation in the magnetic drifts and finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) effects. The magnetic drift and FLR topographies have a perpendicular-wavelength dependence, which permits turbulence intensity maxima near the flux-surface top and bottom at longer binormal scales, but constrains turbulence to the outboard midplane at shorter electron-gyroradius binormal scales. Our simulations show that long-wavelength ETG turbulence does not transport heat efficiently, and significantly decreases overall ETG transport -- in our case by $\sim$40 \% -- through multiscale interactions., 17 pages, 14 figures

9. The role of ETG modes in JET–ILW pedestals with varying levels of power and fuelling

Abstract

We present the results of GENE gyrokinetic calculations based on a series of JET–ITER-like-wall (ILW) type I ELMy H-mode discharges operating with similar experimental inputs but at different levels of power and gas fuelling. We show that turbulence due to electron-temperature-gradient (ETGs) modes produces a significant amount of heat flux in four JET–ILW discharges, and, when combined with neoclassical simulations, is able to reproduce the experimental heat flux for the two low gas pulses. The simulations plausibly reproduce the high-gas heat fluxes as well, although power balance analysis is complicated by short ELM cycles. By independently varying the normalised temperature gradients ( ω T e ) and normalised density gradients ( ω n e ) around their experimental values, we demonstrate that it is the ratio of these two quantities η e = ω T e / ω n e that determines the location of the peak in the ETG growth rate and heat flux spectra. The heat flux increases rapidly as η e increases above the experimental point, suggesting that ETGs limit the temperature gradient in these pulses. When quantities are normalised using the minor radius, only increases in ω T e produce appreciable increases in the ETG growth rates, as well as the largest increases in turbulent heat flux which follow scalings similar to that of critical balance theory. However, when the heat flux is normalised to the electron gyro-Bohm heat flux using the temperature gradient scale length L T e , it follows a linear trend in correspondence with previous work by different authors.

10. Explaining the lack of power degradation of energy confinement in wide pedestal quiescent H-modes via transport modeling

Abstract

Wide pedestal quiescent H (WPQH)-mode is an attractive scenario for future burning plasmas as they operate without ELMs. WPQH is characterized by formation of a wider and higher pedestal (than quiescent H-mode), and broadband fluctuations in the pedestal. Unlike conventional H-modes, where the energy confinement time reduces with increasing heating power, the WPQH plasmas reported in this paper do not show power degradation of the energy confinement. As the injected neutral beam power was increased, reduced core (ρ ⩽ 0.45) transport calculated by transp, as well as increased core temperatures, pressure gradient and diamagnetic E × B shear rate were observed. The reduction in the heat transport and rapid decrease in the ion temperature gradient scale length suggest the formation of an ion internal transport barrier (ITB) that was accompanied by increased stored energy in the core. Quasilinear turbulent transport modeling using the trapped gyro Landau fluid (tglf) code was used to predict the ITB and its turbulence stability properties. By using profiles and equilibria produced by matching the transp transport fluxes with the tglf transport model within the tgyro transport solver, the energy confinement time captures the experimentally observed insensitivity to the increased P NBI. Linear stability analysis reveals that drift-wave instabilities in the core are stabilized by E × B shear, T i/T e ratio and Shafranov shift; the latter was found to have the strongest effect on the turbulence suppression at the highest heating level.

11. A Learned Closure Method Applied to Phase Mixing in a Turbulent Gradient-Driven Gyrokinetic System in Simple Geometry

Abstract

We present a new method for formulating closures that learn from kinetic simulation data. We apply this method to phase mixing in a simple gyrokinetic turbulent system - temperature gradient driven turbulence in an unsheared slab. The closure, called the learned multi-mode (LMM) closure, is constructed by, first, extracting an optimal basis from a nonlinear kinetic simulation using singular value decomposition (SVD). Subsequent nonlinear fluid simulations are projected onto this basis and the results are used to formulate the closure. We compare the closure with other closures schemes over a broad range of the relevant 2D parameter space (collisionality and gradient drive). We find that the turbulent kinetic system produces phase mixing rates much lower than the linear expectations, which the LMM closure is capable of capturing. We also compare radial heat fluxes. A Hammett-Perkins closure, generalized to include collisional effects, is quite successful throughout the parameter space, producing ~14% Root-Mean-Square (RMS) error. The LMM closure is also very effective: when trained at three (two) points (in a 35 point parameter grid), the LMM closure produces 9% (12%) RMS errors. 12. Relationship of Map Unit Variability to Shrink-Swell Indicators

Abstract

A study was conducted in the Culpeper Basin in northern Virginia to quantify soil shrink-swell indicators, to relate the indicators to soil properties, and to partition variability into map unit components. Five delineations in each of five map units were selected for study. Three profiles were sampled within each delineation to complete a nested sampling scheme. Three map units of smectitic, high shrink-swell soils with phase names of Haymarket silt loam, Jackland silt loam, and Waxpool loam, all 0 to 2% slopes, were selected. Also selected was a vermiculitic, high shrink-swell soil map unit named Kelly silt loam, 0 to 2% slopes, and a kaolinitic, a low shrink-swell soil map unit named Davidson clay loam, 2 to 6% slopes, eroded. The Bt horizons of Haymarket, Jackland, Waxpool, and Kelly were clayey and had high cation-exchange capacities (CECs), liquid limits, and plasticity indices (PIs). Soils in the Davidson map unit also had high clay contents but had lower swell indices, liquid limits, PIs, and CECs than the other four map units. Shrink-swell indices and related soil properties exhibited high variability. However, the variability was partitioned within the delineations of each map unit. Each delineation within an individual map unit consisted of the same variability as map units with similar names. Swell indices in all five map units were correlated with liquid limit, clay content, and CEC. However, individual map units exhibited differing relationships. Liquid limit and clay content were the best predictors of swell index in the Haymarket, Jackland, and Waxpool map units, whereas clay content was the best predictor in the Kelly and Davidson map units. Cation-exchange capacity was weakly correlated with swell index in all five map units.

Abstract

Fusion performance in tokamaks hinges critically on the efficacy of the edge transport barrier (ETB) in suppressing energy losses. The new concept of ‘fingerprints’ is introduced to identify the instabilities that cause transport losses in the ETBs of many of today’s experiments, from among widely posited candidates. Analysis of the gyrokinetic-Maxwell equations and gyrokinetic simulations of experiments reveals that each mode type produces characteristic ratios of transport in the various channels: density, heat, and impurities. This, together with experimental observations of transport in some channel or of the relative size of the driving sources of channels, can identify or determine the dominant modes causing energy transport. In multiple H-mode cases with edge-localized modes that are examined, these fingerprints indicate that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-like modes are apparently not the dominant agent of energy transport; rather, this role is played by micro-tearing modes (MTMs) and electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes, and in addition, possibly by ion temperature gradient/trapped electron modes (ITG/TEM) on JET (Joint European Torus). MHD-like modes may dominate the electron particle losses. Fluctuation frequency can also be an important means of identification, and is often closely related to the transport fingerprint. The analytical arguments unify and explain previously disparate experimental observations on multiple devices, including DIII-D, JET, and ASDEX-U. 14. Direct gyrokinetic comparison of pedestal transport in JET with carbon and ITER-like walls.

Abstract

This paper compares the gyrokinetic instabilities and transport in two representative JET pedestals, one (pulse 78697) from the JET configuration with a carbon wall (C) and another (pulse 92432) from after the installation of JET’s ITER-like Wall (ILW). The discharges were selected for a comparison of JET-ILW and JET-C discharges with good confinement at high current (3 MA, corresponding also to low ) and retain the distinguishing features of JET-C and JET-ILW, notably, decreased pedestal top temperature for JET-ILW. A comparison of the profiles and heating power reveals a stark qualitative difference between the discharges: the JET-ILW pulse (92432) requires twice the heating power, at a gas rate of e s−1, to sustain roughly half the temperature gradient of the JET-C pulse (78697), operated at zero gas rate. This points to heat transport as a central component of the dynamics limiting the JET-ILW pedestal and reinforces the following emerging JET-ILW pedestal transport paradigm, which is proposed for further examination by both theory and experiment. ILW conditions modify the density pedestal in ways that decrease the normalized pedestal density gradient a/Ln, often via an outward shift in relation to the temperature pedestal. This is attributable to some combination of direct metal wall effects and the need for increased fueling to mitigate tungsten contamination. The modification to the density profile increases , thereby producing more robust ion temperature gradient (ITG) and electron temperature gradient driven instability. The decreased pedestal gradients for JET-ILW (92432) also result in a strongly reduced shear rate, further enhancing the ion scale turbulence. Collectively, these effects limit the pedestal temperature and demand more heating power to achieve good pedestal performance. Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. Abstract

The first high fidelity gyrokinetic simulations of the energy losses in the transport barriers of large tokamaks in pursuit of fusion gain are presented. These simulations calculate the turbulent energy losses with an extensive treatment of relevant physical effects—fully kinetic, non-linear, electromagnetic—inclusive of all major plasma species, and in equilibria with relevant shape and local bootstrap current for fusion-relevant cases. We find that large plasmas with a small normalized gyroradius lie in an unexpected regime of enhanced losses that can prevent the projected energy gain. Our simulations are qualitatively consistent with recent experiments on JET with an ITER-like wall. Interestingly and very importantly, the simulations predict parameter regimes of reduced transport that are quite fusion-favorable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

JET has been unable to recover historical confinement levels when operating with an ITER-like wall (ILW) due largely to the inaccessibility of high pedestal temperatures. Finding a path to overcome this challenge is of utmost importance for both a prospective JET DT campaign and for future ITER operation. Gyrokinetic simulations (using the Gene code) quantitatively capture experimental transport levels for a representative experimental discharge and qualitatively recover the major experimental trends. Microtearing turbulence is a major transport mechanisms for the low-temperature pedestals characteristic of unseeded JET-ILW discharges. At higher temperatures and/or lower , we identify electrostatic ITG transport of a type that is strongly shear-suppressed on smaller machines. Consistent with observations, this transport mechanism is strongly reduced by the presence of a low-Z impurity (e.g. carbon or nitrogen at the level of ), recovering the accessibility of high pedestal temperatures. Notably, simulations based on dimensionless scans recover historical scaling behavior except in the unique JET-ILW parameter regime where ITG turbulence becomes important. Our simulations also elucidate the observed degradation of confinement caused by gas puffing, emphasizing the important role of the density pedestal structure. This study maps out important regions of parameter space, providing insights that may point to optimal physical regimes that can enable the recovery of high pedestal temperatures on JET. Abstract

The first nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence simulations that quantitatively reproduce experimental transport levels in an H-mode pedestal are reported. In the JET-ILW (ITER-like wall) pedestal, the bulk of the transport in the steep gradient region is caused by the turbulence driven by the microtearing mode (MTM). Kinetic ballooning modes are found to be in a second-stability regime. With contributions from the neoclassical and electron temperature gradient driven transport, the MTM mechanism reproduces, quantitatively, the experimental power balance across most of the pedestal. Abstract

Recent results on electromagnetic turbulence from gyrokinetic studies in different magnetic configurations are overviewed, detailing the physics of electromagnetic turbulence and transport, and the effect of equilibrium magnetic field scale lengths. Ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence is shown to produce magnetic stochasticity through nonlinear excitation of linearly stable tearing-parity modes. The excitation, which is catalyzed by the zonal flow, produces an electron heat flux proportional to β2 that deviates markedly from quasilinear theory. Above a critical beta known as the non-zonal transition (NZT), the magnetic fluctuations disable zonal flows by allowing electron streaming that shorts zonal potential between flux surfaces. This leads to a regime of very high transport levels. Kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) saturation is described. For tokamaks saturation involves twisted structures arising from magnetic shear; for helical plasmas oppositely inclined convection cells interact by mutual shearing. Microtearing modes are unstable in the magnetic geometry of tokamaks and the reversed field pinch (RFP). In NSTX instability requires finite collisionality, large beta, and is favored by increasing magnetic shear and decreasing safety factor. In the RFP, a new branch of microtearing with finite growth rate at vanishing collisionality is shown from analytic theory to require the electron grad-B/curvature drift resonance. However, gyrokinetic modeling of experimental MST RFP discharges at finite beta reveals turbulence that is electrostatic, has large zonal flows, and a large Dimits shift. Analysis shows that the shorter equilibrium magnetic field scale lengths increase the critical gradients associated with the instability of trapped electron modes, ITG and microtearing, while increasing beta thresholds for KBM instability and the NZT. Abstract

The gyrokinetic GENE code is used to study the inter-ELM H-mode pedestal profile evolution for an ASDEX Upgrade discharge. Density gradient driven trapped electron modes are the dominant pedestal instability during the early density-buildup phase. Nonlinear simulations produce particle transport levels consistent with experimental expectations. Later inter-ELM phases appear to be simultaneously constrained by electron temperature gradient (ETG) and kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) turbulence. The electron temperature gradient achieves a critical value early in the ELM cycle, concurrent with the appearance of both microtearing modes and ETG modes. Nonlinear ETG simulations demonstrate that the profiles lie at a nonlinear critical gradient. The nominal profiles are stable to KBM, but moderate increases in β are sufficient to surpass the KBM threshold. Certain aspects of the dynamics support the premise of KBM-constrained pedestal evolution; the density and temperature profiles separately undergo large changes, but in a manner that keeps the pressure profile constant and near the KBM limit.
