Abstract

Compton camera systems can be used to image sources of gamma radiation in a variety of applications such as nuclear medicine, homeland security and nuclear decommissioning. To locate gamma-ray sources, a Compton camera employs electronic collimation, utilising Compton kinematics to reconstruct the paths of gamma rays which interact within the detectors. The main benefit of this technique is the ability to accurately identify and locate sources of gamma radiation within a wide field of view, vastly improving the efficiency and specificity over existing devices. Potential advantages of this imaging technique, along with advances in detector technology, have brought about a rapidly expanding area of research into the optimisation of Compton camera systems, which relies on significant input from Monte-Carlo simulations. In this paper, the functionality of a Compton camera application that has been integrated into GAMOS, the GEANT4-based Architecture for Medicine-Oriented Simulations, is described. The application simplifies the use of GEANT4 for Monte-Carlo investigations by employing a script based language and plug-in technology. To demonstrate the use of the Compton camera application, simulated data have been generated using the GAMOS application and acquired through experiment for a preliminary validation, using a Compton camera configured with double sided high purity germanium strip detectors. Energy spectra and reconstructed images for the data sets are presented.

Abstract

The PorGamRays project aims to develop a portable gamma-ray detection system with both spectroscopic and imaging capabilities. The system is designed around a stack of thin Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors. The imaging capability utilises the Compton camera principle. Each detector is segmented into 100 pixels which are read out through custom designed Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). This device has potential applications in the security, decommissioning and medical fields. This work focuses on the near-field imaging performance of a lab-based demonstrator consisting of two pixelated CZT detectors, each of which is bonded to a NUCAM II ASIC. Measurements have been made with point 133Ba and 57Co sources located ∼ 35 mm from the surface of the scattering detector. Position resolution of ∼ 20 mm FWHM in the x and y planes is demonstrated.

Abstract

Nuclear medical imaging modalities such as positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography are used to probe physiological functions of the body by detecting gamma rays emitted from biologically targeted radiopharmaceuticals. A system which is capable of simultaneous data acquisition for nuclear medical imaging and magnetic resonance imaging is highly sought after by the medical imaging community. Such a device could provide a more complete medical insight into the functions of the body within a well-defined structural context. However, acquiring simultaneous nuclear/MRI sequences are technically challenging due to the conventional photomultiplier tube readout employed by most existing scintillator detector systems. A promising solution is a nuclear imaging device composed of semiconductor detectors that can be operated with a standard MRI scanner. However, the influence of placing a semiconductor detector such as high purity germanium (HPGe) within or close to the bore of an MRI scanner, where high magnetic fields are present, is not well understood. In this paper, the performance of a HPGe detector operating in a high strength static (BS) MRI field along with fast switching gradient fields and radiofrequency from the MRI system has been assessed. The influence of the BS field on the energy resolution of the detector has been investigated for various positions and orientations of the detector within the magnetic field. The results have then been interpreted in terms of the influence of the BS field on the charge collection properties. MRI images have been acquired with the detector situated at the entrance of the MRI bore to investigate the effects of simultaneous data acquisition on detector performance and MRI imaging.

Abstract

The Small Animal Reconstruction Tomograph for Positron Emission Tomography (SmartPET) project is the development of a small animal Positron Emission Tomography (PET) demonstrator based on the use of High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors and state of the art digital electronics. The experimental results presented demonstrate the current performance of this unique system. By performing high precision measurements of one of the SmartPET HPGe detectors with a range of finely collimated gamma-ray beams the response of the detector as a function of gamma-ray interaction position has been quantified, facilitating the development of parametric Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) techniques and algorithms for the correction of imperfections in detector performance. These algorithms have then been applied to data from PET imaging measurements using two such detectors in conjunction with a specially designed rotating gantry. In this paper we show how the use of parametric PSA approaches allows over 60% of coincident events to be processed and how the nature and complexity of an event has direct implications for the quality of the resulting image.

Abstract

Conventional medical gamma-ray camera systems utilise mechanical collimation to provide information on the position of an incident gamma-ray photon. Systems that use electronic collimation utilising Compton image reconstruction techniques have the potential to offer huge improvements in sensitivity. Position sensitive high purity germanium (HPGe) detector systems are being evaluated as part of a single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) Compton camera system. Data have been acquired from the orthogonally segmented planar SmartPET detectors, operated in Compton camera mode. The minimum gamma-ray energy which can be imaged by the current system in Compton camera configuration is 244 keV due to the 20 mm thickness of the first scatter detector which causes large gamma-ray absorption. A simulation package for the optimisation of a new semiconductor Compton camera has been developed using the Geant4 toolkit. This paper will show results of preliminary analysis of the validated Geant4 simulation for gamma-ray energies of SPECT, 141 keV.

Abstract

The application of position sensitive semiconductor detectors in medical imaging is a field of global research interest. The Monte-Carlo simulation toolkit GEANT4 [http://geant4.web.cern.ch/geant4/] was employed to improve the understanding of detailed γ-ray interactions within the small animal Positron Emission Tomography (PET), high-purity germanium (HPGe) imaging system, SmartPET [A.J. Boston, et al., Oral contribution, ANL, Chicago, USA, 2006]. This system has shown promising results in the field of PET [R.J. Cooper, et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A (2009), accepted for publication] and Compton camera imaging [J.E. Gillam, et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 579 (2007) 76]. Images for a selection of single and multiple point, line and phantom sources were successfully reconstructed using both a filtered-back-projection (FBP) [A.R. Mather, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2007] and an iterative reconstruction algorithm [A.R. Mather, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2007]. Simulated data were exploited as an alternative route to a reconstructed image allowing full quantification of the image distortions introduced in each phase of the data processing. Quantifying the contribution of uncertainty in all system components from detector to reconstruction algorithm allows the areas in need of most attention on the SmartPET project and semiconductor PET to be addressed.

Abstract

The evolution of Germanium detector technology over the last decade has lead to the possibility that they can be employed in medical and security imaging. The potential of excellent energy resolution coupled with good position information that Germanium affords removes the necessity for mechanical collimators that would be required in a conventional gamma camera system. By removing this constraint, the overall dose to the patient can be reduced or the throughput of the system can be increased. An additional benefit of excellent energy resolution is that tight gates can be placed on energies from either a multi-lined gamma source or from multi-nuclide sources increasing the number of sources that can be used in medical imaging. In terms of security imaging, segmented Germanium gives directionality and excellent spectroscopic information.

Abstract

The isotope separator and accelerator (ISAC) facility located at the TRIUMF laboratory in Vancouver, Canada, is one of the world’s most advanced isotope separator on-line-type radioactive ion beam facilities. An extensive γ-ray spectroscopy programme at ISAC is centred around two major research facilities: (i) the 8π γ-ray spectrometer for β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy experiments with the low-energy beams from ISAC-I, and (ii) the next generation TRIUMF-ISAC gamma-ray escape suppressed spectrometer (TIGRESS) for in-beam experiments with the accelerated radioactive-ion beams. An overview of these facilities and recent results from the diverse programme of nuclear structure and fundamental interaction studies they support is presented.

Abstract

The SmartPET project is the development of a prototype small-animal imaging system based on the use of Hyperpure Germanium (HPGe) detectors. The use of digital electronics and application of Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) techniques provide fine spatial resolution, while the excellent intrinsic energy resolution of HPGe detectors makes the system ideal for multi-nuclide imaging. As a result, the SmartPET system has the potential to function as a dual modality imager, operating as a dual-head Positron Emission Tomography (PET) camera or in a Compton Camera configuration for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging. In this paper, we discuss how the use of simple PSA techniques greatly improves the position sensitivity of the detector yielding improved spatial resolution in reconstructed images. The PSA methods presented have been validated by comparison to data from high-precision scanning of the detectors. Results from this analysis are presented along with initial images from the SmartPET system, which demonstrates the impact of these techniques on PET images.

Abstract

Small Animal Reconstruction PET (SmartPET) is a project funded by the UK medical research council (MRC) to demonstrate proof of principle that Germanium can be utilised in Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The SmartPET demonstrator consists of two orthogonal strip High Purity Germanium (HPGe) planar detectors manufactured by ORTEC. The aim of the project is to produce images of an internal source with sub mm 3 spatial resolution. Before this image can be achieved the detectors have to be fully characterised to understand the response at any given location to a γ -ray interaction. This has been achieved by probing the two detectors at a number of specified points with collimated sources of various energies and strengths. A 1 mm diameter collimated beam of photons was raster scanned in 1 mm steps across the detector. Digital pulse shape data were recorded from all the detector channels and the performance of the detector for energy and position determination has been assessed. Data will be presented for the first SmartPET detector.

Abstract

Measurement of induced transient charges on spectator electrodes is a critical requirement of the SmartPET project. Such a task requires the precise measurement of small amplitude pulses. Induced charge magnitudes on the SmartPET detectors were therefore studied and the suitability of wavelet analysis applied to de-noising signals was investigated. It was found that the absolute net maximum induced charge magnitudes from the two adjacent electrodes to the collecting electrode is 17% of the real charge magnitude for the AC side and 20% for the DC side. It was also found that wavelet analysis could identify induced charges of comparable magnitude to system noise.

Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to produce X-ray images of mice feet using the diffraction-enhanced imaging (DEI) system at the UK Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) at Daresbury. There were two broad types of mice feet samples studied: normal and arthritic. The two types of samples were imaged using several views and compared in order to determine whether it would be possible to detect the early morphological changes linked with this form of arthritis. We found that the DEI images produced were indeed of sufficient quality to show the presence of some osteoarthritic changes.

Abstract

WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract

The low-energy structure of the proton dripline nucleus {sup 20}Na has been studied using Coulomb excitation at the TRIUMF-ISAC radioactive ion beam facility. A 1.7-MeV/nucleon {sup 20}Na beam of {approx}5x10{sup 6} ions/s was Coulomb excited by a 0.5-mg/cm{sup 2nat}Ti target. Scattered beam and target particles were detected by the BAMBINO segmented Si detector while {gamma} rays were detected by two TIGRESS HPGe clover detectors set perpendicular to the beam axis. Coulomb excitation from the 2{sup +} ground state to the first excited 3{sup +} and 4{sup +} states was observed, and B({lambda}L) values were determined using the 2{sup +}{yields}0{sup +} de-excitation in {sup 48}Ti as a reference. The resulting B({lambda}L){down_arrow} values are B(E2;3{sup +}{yields}2{sup +})=55{+-}6 e{sup 2} fm{sup 4} (17.0{+-}1.9 W.u.), B(E2;4{sup +}{yields}2{sup +})=35.7{+-}5.7 e{sup 2} fm{sup 4} (11.1{+-}1.8 W.u.), and B(M1;4{sup +}{yields}3{sup +})=0.154{+-}0.030 {mu}{sub N}{sup 2} (0.086{+-}0.017 W.u.). These measurements provide the first experimental determination of B({lambda}L) values for this proton dripline nucleus of astrophysical interest.

Abstract

The ProSPECTus project is the development of a prototype semiconductor Compton camera for use in nuclear medical imaging applications. The proposed system has the potential to improve the sensitivity of conventional mechanically col-limated Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) systems through the use of electronic collimation techniques. In addition, the use of compatible semiconductor technology within a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system could potentially lead to simultanous SPECT/MRI data acquisition. This paper outlines the consideration of key design features for the new system. Such design factors include the geometrical setup, suitable energy and position resolution values for the detectors and the ability of the system to function in a magnetic field. The ProSPECTus protoype imaging system will now be built according to optimised specifications.

Abstract

The low-energy structures of the radioactive nuclei 20, 21Na have been examined using Coulomb excitation at the TRIUMF-ISAC radioactive ion beam facility. Beams of ∼ 5×106 ions/s were accelerated to 1.7MeV/A and Coulomb excited in a 0.5mg/cm^2 natTi target. Two TIGRESS HPGe clover detectors perpendicular to the beam axis were used for $ \gamma$ -ray detection, while scattered nuclei were observed by the Si detector BAMBINO. For 21Na , Coulomb excitation from the 3/2+ ground state to the first excited 5/2+ state was observed, while for 20Na , Coulomb excitation was observed from the 2+ ground state to the first excited 3+ and 4+ states. For both beams, B ( $ \lambda$ L) values were determined using the 2+ $ \rightarrow$ 0+ de-excitation in 48Ti as a reference. The resulting B(E2) ↓ value for 21Na is 137±9 e^2fm^4, while the resulting B( $ \lambda$ L) ↓ values for 20Na are 55±6 e^2fm^4 for the 3+ $ \rightarrow$ 2+ , 35.7±5.7 e^2 fm^4 for the 4+ $ \rightarrow$ 2+ , and 0.154±0.030 μ_N^2 for the 4+ $ \rightarrow$ 3+ transitions. This analysis significantly improves the measurement of the 21Na B(E2) value, and provides the first experimental determination of B( $ \lambda$ L) values for the proton dripline nucleus 20Na .-1

Abstract

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is an established method of studying physiological functions. However, novel gamma-ray Compton camera systems which provide electronic collimation have the potential to greatly improve the sensitivity of this technique. Compton cameras have been employed in high energy applications but have not yet been fully implemented for clinical applications at low energies. This paper describes the optimization of imaging efficiency for the ProSPECTus medical imaging Compton camera system with 99mTc. Experimental factors which degrade the image quality will also be assessed and quantified.

Abstract

The low-energy structures of the mirror nuclei {sup 21}Ne and radioactive {sup 21}Na have been examined by using Coulomb excitation at the TRIUMF-ISAC radioactive ion beam facility. Beams of {approx}5x10{sup 6} ions/s were accelerated to 1.7 MeV/A and Coulomb excited in a 0.5 mg/cm{sup 2} {sup nat}Ti target. Scattered beam and target particles were detected by the segmented Si detector BAMBINO, while {gamma} rays were observed by using two TIGRESS HPGe clover detectors perpendicular to the beam axis. For each isobar, Coulomb excitation from the (3/2){sup +} ground state to the first excited (5/2){sup +} state was observed and B(E2) values were determined by using the 2{sup +}{yields}0{sup +} de-excitation in {sup 48}Ti as a reference. The {phi} segmentation of BAMBINO was used to deduce tentative assignments for the signs of the mixing ratios between the E2 and M1 components of the transitions. The resulting B(E2){up_arrow} values are 131{+-}9 e{sup 2} fm{sup 4} (25.4{+-}1.7 W.u.) for {sup 21}Ne and 205{+-}14 e{sup 2} fm{sup 4} (39.7{+-}2.7 W.u.) for {sup 21}Na. The fit to the present data and the known lifetimes determined E2/M1 mixing ratios and B(M1){down_arrow} values of {delta}=(-)0.0767{+-}0.0027 and 0.1274{+-}0.0025 {mu}{sub N}{sup 2} and {delta}=(+)0.0832{+-}0.0028 and 0.1513{+-}0.0017 {mu}{sub N}{sup 2} more » for {sup 21}Ne and {sup 21}Na, respectively (with Krane and Steffen sign convention). By using the effective charges e{sub p}=1.5e and e{sub n}=0.5e, the B(E2) values produced by the p-sd shell model are 30.7 and 36.4 W.u. for {sup 21}Ne and {sup 21}Na, respectively. This analysis resolves a significant discrepancy between a previous experimental result for {sup 21}Na and shell-model calculations. « less

Abstract

The evolution of germanium detectors over the last decade has lead to the possibility that they can be used in medical imaging and security scanning. The potential of increased sensitivity and energy resolution that germanium affords takes away the necessity of mechanical collimators that would be required in a gamma camera. Without mechanical collimation the resulting increase in statistics leads to the possibility of decreased patient dose or increased system throughput. In terms of security imaging segmented germanium provides directionality and excellent spectroscopic information for nuclide identification.

Abstract

The performance of Compton imaging systems is limited by the angular uncertainty arising from the detector geometry and spatial resolution [Ordonez et al., 1997 amd 1999], When closely spaced multiple interactions are incorrectly recorded as a single event [Solomon and Ott, 1988], termed "interaction packing", the system response has considerable angular and directional uncertainty. In this situation, we test two methods for assigning the event location; binning the combined interaction to a central location, and sub-sampling to an energy weighted centroid. We considered a dual layer camera geometry containing two SmartPET detectors [Hall et al., 2003], and employed Geant4 [Agostinelli et al., 2003] to simulate the response to 662 keV photons. A cone-intersection algorithm [Wilderman et al., 2000] is utilised to reconstruct the activity distribution. The major findings are as follows. Interaction packing in the scatter detector leads to an increase in reconstructed background levels. Interaction packing in the absorption detector leads to a broader point spread function, but this is only observed using the energy centroid approximation. While both of these effects are small for the SmartPET based geometry, they may lead to image degradation when using different detection geometries, such as more closely spaced detection volumes.
