Backgrounds/Aims Portal vein resection (PVR) with major hepatic resection can increase the rate of curative resection for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HC). However, the oncologic role and safety of PVR is still debatable. This study aims to analyze PVR in terms of safety and therapeutic effectiveness. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 235 patients who had undergone major hepatic resection for HC with curative intent, including patients with PVR (PVR, n=35) consisting of PV invasion (PVR-A, n=9), No PV invasion (PVR-B, n=26); and patients without PVR (No PVR, n=200). Results There was no significant difference in the 30-day mortality or postoperative morbidity between PVR and No PVR (2.9% vs. 1.0%; p=0.394 and 34.3% vs. 35.0%; p=0.875). The rate of advanced HC (T3: 40% vs. 12%; p600 ml (p=0.010), T3 diseases (p=0.001), nodal metastasis (p=0.001) and poor differentiation (p=0.002) were identified as independent risk factors for survival. Conclusions PVR does not increase postoperative mortality or morbidity. It showed a similar oncologic outcome, despite a more advanced disease state in patients with HC. Given these findings, PVR should be actively performed if necessary, after careful patient selection.

4. Influence of inorganic salts on biomass production, biochemical composition, and bioethanol production of Populus alba

Inorganic salts are very important for the biosynthesis of major components such as cellulose and lignin. In order to investigate biomass production, major components of the biosynthesis of plant cell wall and the bioethanol production of Populus alba, we examined the effect of inorganic salts on in vitro culture systems without specific mineral salts. The medium without H2PO4- was supportive for Populus alba shoot growth, while the absence of NH4+ resulted in poor shoot growth. The medium without H2PO4- and Fe3+ inhibited above-ground biomass production, whereas NH4+ and K+ deprivation led to an enhancement of the same. The root/shoot ratio of Populus alba in the medium without H2PO4- was high compared with plants cultured in the control medium. H2PO4- is deeply involved in lignin biosynthesis, and its removal has been shown to reduce the biosynthesis of lignin. Plants grown on nitrate-free medium were found to be good for enzymatic saccharification and ethanol production. The plants grown in the medium without NO3- showed 72.0% enzyme digestibility, and the yield of ethanol showed 9.58% ethanol productivity after 12 hours. These results can be used as the basis for producing high-quality biomass for future bioethanol production.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and fracture susceptibility. In an aged society with increased life expectancy, the incidence rate of osteoporosis is also rapidly increasing. Inadequate nutrition may negatively influence bone metabolism. Recently, many studies have investigated the functionality of milk-derived exosomes, which play important roles in cell-to-cell communication. However, there are few reports of how milk-derived exosomes influence osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Here, we determined whether bovine colostrum-derived exosomes promote anti-osteoporosis in vitro and in vivo. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-stained cells were significantly inhibited in Raw264.7 cells treated with exosomes, indicating reduced osteoclast differentiation. We induced osteoporosis in mice using glucocorticoid pellets after orally administering exosomes for 2 mo. Interestingly, the bone mineral density of exosome-fed mouse groups was significantly improved compared with the glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis group without exosome treatment. In addition, Lactobacillus were decreased in the gut microbiota community of osteoporosis-induced mice, but the gut microbiota community composition was effectively restored by exosome intake. Taken together, we propose that exosomes isolated from bovine colostrum could be a potential candidate for osteoporosis prevention, bone remodeling improvement, and inhibition of bone resorption. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a protective effect of milk exosomes against osteoporosis has been demonstrated in vivo. Our results strongly suggest that bovine colostrum exosomes might be used as a prophylaxis to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. Indeed, our results offer promising alternative strategies in the nutritional management of age-related bone complications.

The pulsation of compressor pipe refrigerant pressure that occurs during the suction and discharge processes of a compressor is a major cause of vibration and noise. This makes it important to be able to predict the pressure pulsation within the pipe using numerical analysis, leading to a design that can reduce it. In this study, a method is presented to obtain the complex propagation speed and impedance boundary conditions of the refrigerant, which are necessary for the numerical analysis, by using the least square estimation and experimental data. Experimental verification was carried out by installing a total of 14 pressure sensors at 100 mm intervals on the compressor suction pipe connected to the refrigerant supply equipment. To verify the numerical analysis model the pressure pulsation was measured by varying the compressor operating frequency. Also, a pressure-structure interaction analysis was used to investigate whether an elastic structure installed within the pipe would affect any reduction in the pressure pulsation. The results showed that installation of the elastic structure within the pipe resulted in a significant pulsation reduction effect for the first operating frequency, while a slight reduction effect was observed for the second operating frequency. It was found that the pressure pulsation reduction was most significant when the longitudinal natural frequency of the installed elastic structure matches the operating frequency of the compressor.

Donor-derived malignancy, particularly melanoma, is a rare but known complication of organ transplantation. Here we describe a case of metastatic melanoma in a deceased-donor kidney transplant recipient. After diagnosis, the patient was successfully treated with cessation of immunosuppression, explantation of the renal allograft, and novel melanoma therapies, including the mutation-targeted agents dabrafenib and trametinib and the immune checkpoint inhibitor nivolumab. These 2 new classes of melanoma therapy have revolutionized the course of metastatic melanoma, altering it from one of nearly certain mortality to one of potential cure. This case reviews the mechanisms of action of these therapies and reports our experience with them in the rare setting of donor-derived melanoma in a dialysis-dependent patient.

Frequency weighting functions that reflect the frequency characteristics of the human body must be applied in order to measure and assess the amount of human vibration. These functions, applied differently according to the part of the body exposed to vibration and vibration direction, exist in the form of frequency transfer functions and are mandated by international standards. To efficiently apply weighting functions to the measured acceleration time signal, it is essential to design digital filters for such functions. Frequency weighting functions consist of transfer functions from high orders. The z-transform process is performed for the digital filter design of frequency weighting functions. The applicable range of frequency also varies with sampling time and record length of the measured acceleration data. This study proposed a method of deriving the digital filter coefficient of z-transform based on matrix calculations. The validity of digital filters designed from applying the coefficient was assessed and applicable frequency ranges were presented in relation to the sampling time and record length.

A proportion of the fast-growing elderly population needs special foods which are soft to chew and easily swallowed. Gel microparticles, GMP, (e.g., less than 100 μm in size) are an alternative as texture-modifiers in liquid and pureed foods, and may be used as carriers of needed flavors and nutrients. GMP (sizes 2 = 0.89) was obtained between the stress (at 60% strain) of bulk gels and that of GMP. Compression stress at 30% strain depended on the concentrations of WPI and NaAlg and a maximum was observed at intermediate values. Through Principal Component Analysis gels with low and high sodium alginate contents were clearly explaining 93% of the variability. The ample range of mechanical properties of GMP suggest that they may be used to design or modify the texture of soft foods.

Background Although polymorphisms of the catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) gene have been implicated in altered pain sensitivity, results concerning the association between COMT gene polymorphisms and fibromyalgia (FM) are equivocal. We assessed the associations between COMT single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and FM risk and symptom severity. Methods In total, 409 FM patients and 423 controls were enrolled. Alleles and genotypes at five positions [rs6269 (A>G), rs4633 (C>T), rs4818 (C>G), rs4680 (C>G) and rs165599 (A>G)] in the COMT gene were genotyped from peripheral blood DNA. Results Alleles and genotypes of the rs4818 COMT gene polymorphism were significantly associated with increased susceptibility to FM. The rs4818 GG genotype was more strongly associated with FM compared to the CC genotype (OR = 1.680, 95% CI: 1.057, 2.672, p = 0.027). Although allele and genotype frequencies did not differ among groups, the rs4633 CT genotype was not associated with the presence of FM following adjustment for age and sex (OR = 0.745; 95% CI: 0.558, 0.995; p = 0.046). However, no association was observed between clinical measures and individual COMT SNPs. In haplotype analysis, there was a significant association between ACG haplotype and FM susceptibility sex (OR = 2.960, 95% CI: 1.447, 6.056, p = 0.003) and the number of tender points (p = 0.046). Conclusions This large-scale study suggests that polymorphisms of the COMT gene may be associated with FM risk and pain sensitivity in Korean FM patients. However, our results differed to those of previous studies, suggesting ethnic variation in COMT gene polymorphisms in FM. What does this study add By contrast to Caucasian and Latin-American populations, the COMT gene polymorphisms are associated with FM risk and pain sensitivity in Korean FM patients, suggesting ethnic variation in COMT gene polymorphisms.

Despite great attention given to the recent Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in the Americas, much remains unknown about its epidemiology and evolution, in part due to a lack of genomic data. We applied multiple sequencing approaches to generate 110 ZIKV genomes from clinical and mosquito samples from 10 countries and territories, greatly expanding the observed viral genetic diversity from this outbreak. We analyzed the timing and patterns of introductions into distinct geographic regions; our phylogenetic evidence suggests rapid expansion of the outbreak in Brazil and multiple introductions of outbreak strains into Puerto Rico, Honduras, Colombia, other Caribbean islands, and the continental US. We find that ZIKV circulated undetected in multiple regions for many months before the first locally transmitted cases were confirmed, highlighting the importance of viral surveillance. We identify mutations with possible functional implications for ZIKV biology and pathogenesis, as well as those potentially relevant to the effectiveness of diagnostic tests.

Background: Germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 pathogenic variants in ovarian cancer patients may be predictive of sensitivity to platinum derivatives and PARP enzyme inhibitors. Population studies have indicated a >10% prevalence of BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants with wide variance amongst ethnically different populations. We aim to establish the first population-based cohort to assess the prevalence of BRCA1/2 in ovarian cancer patients throughout Malaysia. Methods: From August 2016, women with non-mucinous epithelial ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer are continually being recruited to the MaGiC Observational Study. DNA were tested using a Hi-Plex next generation sequencing method and multiplex ligation‑dependent probe amplification to detect BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Results: Interim results from 208 patients tested until September 2017 have identified BRCA1 and BRCA2 pathogenic variants in 10.1% (21/208) and 2.9% (6/208) patients, respectively. Variants of uncertain significance were detected in 15.9% (33/208) patients and no pathogenic variants were detected in 71.2% (148/208) patients. Taken together, the prevalence of BRCA1/2 in ovarian cancer patients is approximately 13.0% (27/208). Conclusions: To our knowledge, this will be the first population-based cohort of Malaysian women with ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal carcinoma. Given the clinical significance of BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants in patient management and cancer risk assessment, the data arising from this study may be beneficial to healthcare professionals in medical practice and genetic service centres in Malaysia. 본 연구에서는 전도성이 매우 높은 탄소나노튜브 박막을 제작하고 테라파 영역에서의 광학상수를 측정하였다 . 탄소나노튜브박막은 스핀코팅법 또는 진공여과법을 이용하여 연성플라스틱 기판 위에 증착되었다. 테라파 영역의 전자파 투과율은 박막의 두께 조절을 통해 가능하며, 산처리 등의 후속공정을 통해서도 조절이 가능하다. 시분해 테라파 투과파의 진폭과 위상 측정을 통해유전상수를 포함한 광학상수의 스펙트럼을 측정하였다. 이를 통해 탄소나노튜브 박막이 Drude 자유전자 모델에 잘 부합하며, 높은 플라즈마 진동수를 가지는 등, 우수한 금속의 특성을 가지고 있음이 밝혀졌다 . 또한 산처리 전후 유전상수가 변화하는 것을 직접 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 셀룰로즈 멤브레인에 증착된 CNT 필름의 경우엔 기판의 효과가 제거된 광학계수 측정이 가능함을 보여준다.

Polyurethane foam was fabricated by ‘two-component method’ for changing cell structures. Compression force applied immediately to the polyurethane foam just after complete foam formation at the top of the mold for generation cell structure of negative Poisson effect. That is what we called pressure-controlled method. The polyurethane foam, produced by pressurecontrol method (CT), has significant higher resilience (52.3%) and similar level of shock absorption (47.5%) compared with control polyurethane foam (resilience is 21.5%, shock absorption is 54%). The PU foam with negative Poisson’s ratio showed excellent resilience with shock absorbance. The pressure-control method divided into two parts (CT0, CT1). The CT1 method is to apply compression force to the foam with time-delayed after foam formation. The PU foam produced by CT1 showed lower stress relaxation time, stress relaxation ratio, and maximum stress than CT0. Hence, CT1 foam is superior to other polyurethane foam as shock absorbing materials, such as shoes for diabetic patients.

Green tea powder was microparticulated and subsequently formulated with glucose and water. The sedimentation volume of green tea powder was effectively reduced by decreasing mean particle dia to less than 10 μm. The microstructure of formulated green tea indicated that glucose served as a core material, and green tea powder was attached to the surface of the glucose particles. The formulated green tea powder was instantly dispersed in cold (4 °C) water or milk even in the unstirred state. Results from the first study of isolated-photon+jet correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions are reported. The analysis uses data from PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV per nucleon pair corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 150μb-1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. For events containing an isolated photon with transverse momentum pTγ>60GeV/c and an associated jet with pTJet>30GeV/c, the photon+jet pT imbalance is studied as a function of collision centrality and compared to pp data and pythia calculations at the same collision energy. Using the pTγ of the isolated photon as an estimate of the momentum of the associated parton at production, this measurement allows an unbiased characterisation of the in-medium parton energy loss. For more central PbPb collisions, a significant decrease in the ratio pTJet/pTγ relative to that in the pythia reference is observed. Furthermore, significantly more pTγ>60GeV/c photons in PbPb are observed not to have an associated pTJet>30GeV/c jet, compared to the reference. However, no significant broadening of the photon+jet azimuthal correlation is observed. © 2012 CERN.

Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at s=7TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W'→tb, leading to a final state signature with a single electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to the right-handed (left-handed) chiral projections of the fermions with the same coupling constants as the W is excluded for masses below 1.85 (1.51) TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge couplings for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant improvement over previously published limits. © 2012 CERN.

Results are reported from a search for non-standard-model Higgs boson decays to pairs of new light bosons, each of which decays into the μ+μ- final state. The new bosons may be produced either promptly or via a decay chain. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011. Such Higgs boson decays are predicted in several scenarios of new physics, including supersymmetric models with extended Higgs sectors or hidden valleys. Thus, the results of the search are relevant for establishing whether the new particle observed in Higgs boson searches at the LHC has the properties expected for a standard model Higgs boson. No excess of events is observed with respect to the yields expected from standard model processes. A model-independent upper limit of 0.86±0.06 fb on the product of the cross section times branching fraction times acceptance is obtained. The results, which are applicable to a broad spectrum of new physics scenarios, are compared with the predictions of two benchmark models as functions of a Higgs boson mass larger than 86 GeV/c2 and of a new light boson mass within the range 0.25-3.55 GeV/c2. © 2013 CERN.

A search has been made for massive resonances decaying into a quark and a vector boson, qW or qZ, or a pair of vector bosons, WW, WZ, or ZZ, where each vector boson decays to hadronic final states. This search is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected in the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. For sufficiently heavy resonances the decay products of each vector boson are merged into a single jet, and the event effectively has a dijet topology. The background from QCD dijet events is reduced using recently developed techniques that resolve jet substructure. A 95% CL lower limit is set on the mass of excited quark resonances decaying into qW (qZ) at 2.38 TeV (2.15 TeV) and upper limits are set on the cross section for resonances decaying to qW, qZ, WW, WZ, or ZZ final states. © 2013 CERN.
