1. Review: The epic journey of sperm through the female reproductive tract

Abstract

Millions or billions of sperm are deposited by artificial insemination or natural mating into the cow reproductive tract but only a few arrive at the site of fertilization and only one fertilizes an oocyte. The remarkable journey that successful sperm take to reach an oocyte is long and tortuous, and includes movement through viscous fluid, avoiding dead ends and hostile immune cells. The privileged collection of sperm that complete this journey must pass selection steps in the vagina, cervix, uterus, utero-tubal junction and oviduct. In many locations in the female reproductive tract, sperm interact with the epithelium and the luminal fluid, which can affect sperm motility and function. Sperm must also be tolerated by the immune system of the female for an adequate time to allow fertilization to occur. This review emphasizes literature about cattle but also includes work in other species that emphasizes critical broad concepts. Although all parts of the female reproductive tract are reviewed, particular attention is given to the sperm destination, the oviduct.

Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.

Abstract

A single crystal Al specimen was molded at room temperature with long, rectangular, strip diamond punches. Quantitative molding response curves were obtained at a series of punch widths, ranging from 5 μm to 550 nm. A significant size effect was observed, manifesting itself in terms of significantly increasing characteristic molding pressure as the punch width decreases to 1.5 μm and below. A detailed comparison of the present strip punch molding results was made with Berkovich pyramidal indentation on the same single crystal Al specimen. The comparison reveals distinctly different dependence of the characteristic pressure on corresponding characteristic length. The present results show the feasibility of micro-/nano-scale compression molding as a micro-/nano-fabrication technique, and offer an experimental test case for size-dependent plasticity theories.

Abstract

As part of the 2006 Investigator islands scientific expedition, a mapping survey was carried out to improve what was known about the spatial extent and composition of subtidal benthic habitats surrounding Flinders and Pearson Islands in the Investigator group of South Australia’s west coast. Habitats in the Investigator group are relatively pristine and diverse, and as such have unique conservation value. An initiative to develop a representative system of Marine Protected Areas for South Australia has recognised the biodiversity value of the area by nominating it for inclusion in a new marine park.Previous broad scale mapping of the area was undertaken using 1:100,000 scale satellite imagery and was based on limited ground truthing. In order to fully appreciate the significance of such areas and to properly manage them, more detailed information based on more extensive field validation is required. Abstract

In this paper, we report on the production of Fe cluster/FePt matrix nanocomposite permanent magnets. Monodispersed Fe clusters with sizes below 10 nm were formed by gas aggregation techniques. These Fe clusters were imbedded in an FePt matrix by alternate deposition from two sources. Specimens with a range of Fe cluster phase content from 0 to 30 vol% were produced by controlling deposition times from each source. As-deposited FePt formed in the A1 structure; thus, post-deposition heat treatment was necessary to form the hard magnetic L10 FePt compound. A single-step heat treatment at 600 °C for 10 min leads to nanocomposite structures with excellent magnetic properties. The coercivity decreased with increasing Fe cluster content, while the energy product initially increased, reaching a maximum of almost 18 MGOe, and then decreased at higher Fe cluster content. Secondary heat treatment at 500 °C significantly improved the magnetic properties when compared with the single-step heat treatment at 600 °C. Increased coercivity and remanence was observed, resulting in energy products of 21 MGOe. The energy products are close to 70 percent greater than expected for uncoupled systems.

Abstract

Consumer preference information is essential to targeting research. This paper reports an effort of a multi-disciplinary team to measure the market value of cowpea characteristics. Five samples were purchased once per month in seven markets in Ghana and Cameroon starting in September 1996. In the market, price and vendor characteristics were noted. In the laboratory, size of grains, testa color, testa texture, eye color and damage levels were recorded. A hedonic pricing regression model was used. Results indicate that grain size is the most important characteristic. Consumers seem more sensitive to bruchid (Callosobruchus maculates) damage than hypothesized. Cowpeas with white testa command a clear premium only in one of the Ghanaian markets. In Ghana, black eyes sell at a premium, but in Cameroon black eyes are discounted. In general, this study indicates that quality characteristics are very important in West African food markets. Even low income consumers are willing to pay a premium for products that match their preferences, and they are vigilant in identifying products that do not meet their standards. Purchasing samples on a regular basis and hedonic pricing offers a practical way for biological scientists and economists to work together to measure these consumer preferences.

Abstract

The tau -> mu nu nu branching ratio has been measured using data collected from 1990 to 1995 by the OPAL detector at the LEP collider. The resulting value of B(tau -> mu nu nu) = 0.1734 +- 0.0009(stat) +- 0.0006(syst) has been used in conjunction with other OPAL measurements to test lepton universality, yielding the coupling constant ratios gmu/ge=1.0005+-0.0044 and gt/ge=1.0031+-0.0048, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of unity. A value for the Michel parameter eta = 0.004 +- 0.037 has also been determined and used to find a limit for the mass of the charged Higgs boson mH+- > 1.25 tan beta, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Abstract

Searches for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks, and for squarks in R-parity violating SUSY models with the direct decay of the squark into Standard Model particles, have been performed using e+e- collisions collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. No excess of events is found over the expectation from Standard Model background processes. Limits are computed on the leptoquark couplings for different values of the branching ratio to electron-quark final states.

Abstract

Data on muon pair production obtained by the OPAL collaboration at centre of mass energies near the Z peak are analysed. Small angular mismatches between the directions of the two muons are used to assess the effects of initial state photon radiation and initial-final-state radiation interference on the forward-backward asymmetry of muon pairs. The dependence of the asymmetry on the invariant mass of the pair is measured in a model-independent way. Effective vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson are determined and compared to the Standard Model expectations., 31 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by Physics Letters B

Abstract

The lifetime and oscillation frequency of the B0 meson has been measured using B0->D*+l-v decays recorded on the Z0 peak with the OPAL detector at LEP. The D*+ -> D0pi+ decays were reconstructed using an inclusive technique and the production flavour of the B0 mesons was determined using a combination of tags from the rest of the event. The results t_B0 = 1.541 +- 0.028 +- 0.023 ps, Dm_d = 0.497 +- 0.024 +- 0.025 ps-1 were obtained, where in each case the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

The inclusive production rate of phi mesons from the decay of b hadrons produced in Z0 decays was measured to be Br(b->phi+X) = 0.0282+-0.0013(stat.)+-0.0019(syst.), using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP.

Abstract

The magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vcb has been measured using B0 to D*l nu decays recorded on the Z0 peak using the OPAL detector at LEP. The D* to D0 pi+ decays were reconstructed both in the particular decay modes D0 to K- pi+ and D0 to K- pi+ pi- and via an inclusive technique. The product of |Vcb| and the decay form factor of the B0 to D* l nu transition at zero recoil F(1) was measured to be F(1)|Vcb| = (37.1+-1.0+-2.0)x10^-3, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively. By using Heavy Quark Effective Theory calculations for F(1), a value of |Vcb| = (40.7+-1.1+-2.2+-1.6)x 10^-3 was obtained, where the third error is due to theoretical uncertainties in the value of F(1). The branching ratio Br(B0 to D* l nu) was also measured to be (5.26+-0.20+-0.46)%.

Abstract

In principle any e + e − collider can generate real γγ and eγ collisions at a significant fraction of the luminosity and energy available in e + e − mode. More R and D is needed to prove that this will work, and to cost it. The outline of the physics case is known but it needs to be sharpened if the real photon option is to included in the technical proposals for future linear colliders. If a light Higgs boson is found then the importance of making a direct measurement of its two photon partial width would make the case very strong.

Abstract

A study of Z boson pair production in e+e- annihilation at center-of-mass energies near 183 GeV and 189 GeV is reported. Final states containing only leptons, (l+l-l+l- and l+l-nu nubar), quark and lepton pairs, (q qbar l+l-, q qbar nu nubar) and the all-hadronic final state (q qbar q qbar) are considered. In all states with at least one Z boson decaying hadronically, q qbar and b bbar final states are considered separately using lifetime and event-shape tags, thereby improving the cross-section measurement. At sqrt(s) = 189 GeV the Z-pair cross section was measured to be 0.80 (+0.14-0.13, stat.) (+0.06-0.05, syst.) pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. At sqrt(s) = 183 GeV the 95% C.L. upper limit is 0.55 pb. Limits on anomalous ZZgamma and ZZZ couplings are derived.

Abstract

Using seeding techniques to control the orientation of grains, we have been able to create a wide variety of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 6+x/ grain boundaries. In addition to five domain samples with 90/spl deg/[100] twist and tilt grain boundaries, we have now developed a method to produce grain boundaries in the same sample that have the misorientations /spl theta/[001] tilt, /spl theta/[100] tilt, and 90/spl deg/-/spl theta/[100], where the misorientation angle /spl theta/ is fully controllable. We will demonstrate how these boundaries can be synthesized, give experimental evidence via polarized light microscopy and electron backscatter patterns (EBSP) that the intended grain boundaries were indeed formed, and discuss the importance of these boundaries in future grain boundary studies.

Abstract

Searches for a scalar top quark and a scalar bottom quark have been performed using a data sample of 182 pb-1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for a signal was found. The 95% confidence level lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 90.3 GeV if the mixing angle between the supersymmetric partners of the left- and right-handed states of the top quark is zero. In the worst case, when the scalar top quark decouples from the Z boson, the lower limit is 87.2 GeV. These limits were obtained assuming that the scalar top quark decays into a charm quark and the lightest neutralino, and that the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV. The complementary decay mode of the scalar top quark decaying into a bottom quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino has also been studied. From a search for the scalar bottom quark, a mass limit of 88.6 GeV was obtained if the mass difference between the scalar bottom quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 7 GeV. Abstract

The predicted effects of final state interactions such as colour reconnection are investigated by measuring properties of hadronic decays of W bosons, recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=182.7 GeV in the OPAL detector at LEP. Dependence on the modelling of hadronic W decays is avoided by comparing W+W- -> qqqq events with the non-leptonic component of W+W- -> qqlnu events. The scaled momentum distribution, its mean value, x_p, and that of the charged particle multiplicity, n_ch, are measured and found to be consistent in the two channels. The measured differences are: Diff(x_p) = +0.7 +- 0.8 +- 0.6 and Diff(n_ch) = (-0.09 +- 0.09 +-0.05)*10**-2. In addition, measurements of rapidity and thrust are performed for W+W- -> qqqq events. The data are described well by standard QCD models and disfavour one model of colour reconnection within the ARIADNE program. The current implementation of the ELLIS-GEIGER model of colour reconnection is excluded. At the current level of statistical precision no evidence for colour reconnection effects was found in the observables studied. The predicted effect of colour reconnection on OPAL measurements of M_W is also quantified in the context of models studied.

Abstract

Using data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP, we have searched for the processes e+e- -> Z0 -> p e-, p mu- and the charge conjugate final-states. These would violate the conservation of the baryon-number B, lepton-number L and the fermion-number n = (B+L). No evidence for such decays has been found, and the 95% confidence level upper limits on the partial widths Z0 -> p e and Z0 -> p mu are found to be 4.6 and 4.4 keV respectively., 16 pages, LaTeX, 2 ps figs included, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

This atlas is a selection of roentgenograms of patients who visited the radiology departments at the University Hospital in Leiden between 1970 and 1978, the Free University Hospital in Amsterdam in 1979, and the radiology department at the Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis in 1977. The most common radiological abnormalities of the small intestine are illustrated clearly, unhindered by flocculation or segmentation of the contrast fluid. The authors believe this book is a definite contribution to the goal of precise early small bowel diagnosis. However, the key to good diagnosis is not only a superb examination technique, but also the knowledge, the character, and the personal perfectionism of the physician. If these factors are optimal, then the best possible roentgenographic series will be obtained - at least as far as the technique is concerned. All patients illustrated here were examined by using the enteroclysis technique. With this method of small bowel examination, the contrast fluid is administered via an infusion directly into the duodenum instead of orally. The infusion method has added a new dimension to the usual radiological examination of the small intestine. This method is also especially suited for the comparative evaluation of motility, and the study of disturbed motility. Throughout the course of the examination, the technique can be adapted to special situations at any given moment and can be modified to produce precise diagnostic roentgenograms and diagnosis.

Abstract

The purpose of this book is to explain the current state of the art in radiological examination, interpretation, and understanding of colonic disease. The radiologic aspects of colon disease are combined here with clinical information to serve both beginners and advanced students. Major emphasis has been placed on technique for those radiologists, residents, and technologists first undertaking modern gastrointestinal radiographic techniques. The essentials of technique are stressed so that the reader obtains a clear understanding of colon disease based on sound practical information. We believe this book is a thorough and practical text of particular interest to clinical radiologists and gastroenterologists in their everyday practice, and also for teachers, residents and medical students. Digital examination and sigmoidoscopy are the first procedures in examination of the colon. Then, the radiologic examination is the next most important procedure. Endoscopy and biopsy play a compli­ mentary role to the radiological examination. The barium enema reveals quickly and early the overall status of the colon and it can then guide endoscopy and biopsy together with subsequent treatment. Surely, if the lesion is not detected our clinical, radiologic, endoscopic, and therapeutic skills are of no use.

Abstract

The process e+e- to gamma gamma (gamma) is studied using data recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 56.2 pb-1 taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The measured cross-section agrees well with the expectation from QED. A fit to the angular distribution is used to obtain improved limits at 95% CL on the QED cut-off parameters: Lambda+ > 233 GeV and Lambda- > 265 GeV as well as a mass limit for an excited electron, M(e*) > 227 GeV assuming equal e*egamma and eegamma couplings. No evidence for resonance production is found in the invariant mass spectrum of photon pairs. Limits are obtained for the cross-section times branching ratio for a resonance decaying into two photons.

Abstract

Using radiative Z^0 -> \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma events collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at \sqrt{s}= M_Z during 1990-95, a direct study of the electromagnetic current at the \tau\gamma vertex has been performed in terms of the anomalous magnetic form factor F_2 of the \tau lepton. The analysis is based on a data sample of 1429 e^+ e^- -> \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma events which are examined for a deviation from the expectation with F_2 = 0. From the non-observation of anomalous \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma production a limit of -0.068 < F_2 < 0.065 is obtained. This can also be interpreted as a limit on the electric dipole form factor F_3 as -3.8 x 10^-16 e-cm < eF_3 < 3.6 x 10^-16 e-cm. Abstract

Events with four distinct jets from e^+e^- collisions, collected by the OPAL detector at centre-of-mass energies between 130 and 184 GeV, are analysed for a peak in the sum of dijet masses. This search is motivated by the ALEPH Collaboration's observation of a clear excess of events with dijet mass sums close to 105 GeV in data taken at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV in 1995. We have observed no significant excess of four-jet events compared to the Standard Model expectation for any dijet mass sum at any energy. Our observation is inconsistent with the excess observed by ALEPH in 1995. Abstract

This paper presents updated measurements of the lifetimes of the B^0_s meson and the \Lambda_b baryon using 4.4 million hadronic Z^0 decays recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP from 1990 to 1995. A sample of B^0_s decays is obtained using D_s^- \ell^+ combinations, where the D_s^- is fully reconstructed in the \phi \pi^-, K^*0 K^- and K^- K^0_S decay channels and partially reconstructed in the \phi \ell^- \nu(bar) X decay mode. A sample of \Lambda_b decays is obtained using \Lambda_c^+ \ell^- combinations, where the \Lambda_c^+ is fully reconstructed in its decay to a p K^- \pi^+ final state and partially reconstructed in the \Lambda \ell^+ \nu X decay channel. From 172 +/- 28 D_s^- \ell^+ combinations attributed to B^0_s decays, the measured lifetime is \tau(B^0_s) = 1.50 +0.16 -0.15 +/- 0.04 ps, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. From the 129 +\- 25 \Lamda_c^+ \ell^- combinations attributed to \Lambda_b decays, the measured lifetime \tau(\Lambda_b) = 1.29 +0.24 -0.22 +/- 0.06 ps, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract

Hydrothermal circulation at the crests of mid-ocean ridges plays an important role in transferring heat from the interior of the Earth1, 2, 3. A consequence of this hydrothermal circulation is the formation of metallic ore bodies known as volcanic-associated massive sulphide deposits. Such deposits, preserved on land, were important sources of copper for ancient civilizations and continue to provide a significant source of base metals (for example, copper and zinc)4, 5, 6. Here we present results from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 169, which drilled through a massive sulphide deposit on the northern Juan de Fuca spreading centre and penetrated the hydrothermal feeder zone through which the metal-rich fluids reached the sea floor. We found that the style of feeder-zone mineralization changes with depth in response to changes in the pore pressure of the hydrothermal fluids and discovered a stratified zone of high-grade copper-rich replacement mineralization below the massive sulphide deposit. This copper-rich zone represents a type of mineralization not previously observed below sea-floor deposits, and may provide new targets for land-based mineral exploration.

Abstract

A search for decays of the B_c meson was performed using data collected from 1990-1995 with the OPAL detector on or near the Z peak at LEP. The decay channels B_c^+ -> J/psi pi^+, B_c^+ -> J/psi a_1^+ and B_c^+ -> J/psi ell^+ nu were investigated, where ell denotes an electron or a muon. Two candidates are observed in the mode B_c^+ -> J/psi pi^+, with an estimated background of (0.63 +/- 0.20) events. The weighted mean of the masses of the two candidates is (6.32 +/- 0.06) GeV/c^2, which is consistent with the predicted mass of the B_c meson. One candidate event is observed in the mode B_c^+ -> J/psi ell^+ nu with an estimated background of (0.82 +/- 0.19) events. No candidate events are observed in the B_c^+ -> J/psi a_1^+ decay mode, with an estimated background of (1.10 +/- 0.22) events. Abstract

Well-resolved oscillations are reported in the resistivity of an InGaAs quantum well as a function of applied magnetic field below 1 Tesla. The oscillations are observed at room temperature and their magnetic field position depends on the component of the magnetic field in the plane of the well. Because of these unusual properties, the results cannot be due to bound states within the well but it is suggested that they can be explained by quantised states lying above the well in energy. The condition for the formation of the states is satisfied at lower magnetic fields than for normal Landau levels and the states are separated by larger energy intervals.

Abstract

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon specimens were prepared from a cathodic arc. The bond angle stiffness of sp3 carbon requires the presence of sp2 bonding “defects” to relieve network strain. The sp2 sites, if isolated, would give rise to an electron spin. Electron spin resonance measurements show that the spin density, although very high, is over an order of magnitude less than expected on the basis of a completely random distribution. Phosphorus doping from the vapour phase strongly reduces the spin density. The addition of ferromagnetic impurity atoms does not affect the spin density but magnetization measurements show that superparamagnetic clusters are formed. Further addition of ferromagnetic atoms is expected to produce a useful ferromagnetic material.

The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum from Mn 2+ ions has been measured as a function of composition in six different II–VI semiconductor alloys. Despite the overall cubic structure of the alloys, there is a large axial crystal field interaction D due to the lowered symmetry in the alloy environment. The variation of D with composition is explained in terms of the superposition model except in the Hg-based alloys where it is correlated with the band structure variation with composition.

Abstract

The effects of external magnetic-field modulation as well as microwave-power modulation on the signal intensity and line-shape are considered for an electrically detected magnetic resonance signal. It is shown that the signal increases in amplitude and then splits into two lines with increasing magnetic-field-modulation amplitude. A theory is developed which fits the experimental results extremely well and it is concluded that the double modulation can be used to obtain information about component lines as well as to enhance signal-to-noise.

Abstract

Coalescence of water in crude oil emulsions during the initial stages of demulsification can be followed by monitoring changes in the light scattering. Equipment for this purpose is described. One can either measure the transmitted light with a cuvette or the back-scattered light using a fibre optic reflection probe. Interactions between absorption and scattering in crude oil emulsions are discussed. By cross-linking an ethylene-ooxide-propylene-oxide block copolymer, the ability to cause coalescence at low concentrations can be improved. This correlates with the results of water separation tests.

Abstract

In this work, the effects of plastic deformation and applied stress on enhanced decomposition of rapidly solidified microstructures in Al8Fe2Mo and TiEr alloys were examined. The results indicate that there is little effect of either plastic deformation or applied stress on decomposition of the Zone A microstructure in Al8Fe2Mo. It was concluded that decomposition of the microstructure during low temperature extrusion must be a result of adiabatic heat generated during the process. The effect of plastic deformation and applied stress on microstructural degradation of erbia-strengthened TiEr alloys was found to be significant, the extent of coarsening as identified by average particle size increasing as a result of plastic deformation and with increased applied stress. Recrystallization was observed to reduce these effects. The difference in enhanced decomposition behavior between these two microstructures was concluded to be a result of the mechanism of microstructural degradation and atomic transport.

Abstract

This contribution is a compilation of electron microprobe analyses of primary minerals in mafic and ultramafic oceanic crustal rocks from Atlantis Massif. The samples were recovered during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 304/305, which was designed to investigate the formation and evolution of oceanic core complexes. The analyses were performed at five different institutions, and while common standard reference materials were not utilized at all institutions, internal standards and routine operational protocols were undertaken to assure analysis quality. More than 5000 analyses of plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, and spinel are compiled here as a collaborative effort to provide mineral analyses to the expedition shipboard science party and other interested researchers.

Abstract

Surfactants for the enhanced recovery of crude oil were studied with a model oil by means of phase experiments and core floods. As single surfactants, alkylphenol ether sulfonates have only a limited potential for enhanced oil recovery at high salinities. If the surfactant is made hydrophilic enough to dissolve in brine it is no longer able to form a microemulsion with the hydrocarbon. This problem may be solved by using dual surfactant systems consisting of alkane sulfonate and ether sulfonate. At high salinities these surfactant combinations dissolve in brine to form a homogeneous dispersion. Such mixtures are also cheaper than the ether sulfonate alone. Core floods with a model oil demonstrate the efficiency of these surfactant mixtures and their compatibility with a modified polyacrylamide polymer specially developed for high salinity reservoirs.

The object-oriented Robot Independent Programming Environment (RIPE), which is being used for the rapid design and implementation of a variety of applications, is described. A system architecture based on hierarchies of distributed multiprocessors provides the computing platform for a layered programming structure that models the application as a set of software objects. These objects are designed to support model-based automated planning and programming, real-time sensor-based activity, error handling, and robust communication. The object-oriented paradigm provides mechanisms such as inheritance and polymorphism which allow the implementation of the system to satisfy the goals of software reusability, extensibility, reliability, and portability. Designing a hierarchy of generic parent classes and device-specific subclasses which inherit the same interface allows a Robot Independent Programming Language (RIPL) to be realized. Workcell tasks demonstrating robot cask handling operations for nuclear waste facilities, which are successfully implemented using this object-oriented software environment, are discussed. >

Abstract

This paper describes laboratory and pilot plant testwork for the beneficiation of a medium grade iron ore, using gravity separation, by BATAC Jigs and wash waterless spirals. Factors leading to the selection of these methods of separation are discussed. Experience gained in pilot plant operation of the separation techniques, over an extended period, was incorporated into the design of a 3 million tonne per year production plant. Jig chamber design, jig feed arrangements and the design of the plant flowsheet to achieve operational flexibility are discussed. The results of the commissioning and operation of the production plant over twelve months are described.

The potential use of closed-circuit television with a young severely visually impaired girl was assessed to explore the development of visual skills related especially to the development of concepts. The subject underwent 63 training sessions over a six-month period. At the end of training, she could recognize lines, forms, shapes, letters, numbers, and words and could read short sentences. Informal brief replication efforts with four other subjects showed similar results.

A kinetic model for the conversion of ethanol to hydrocarbons over HZSM-5 catalyst has been developed. The model is based on data from ethanol dehydration experiments conducted in a fixed-bed integral reactor at atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 150°C to 360°C, and is the first which integrates the major reaction pathways of both dehydration and higher hydrocarbon formation over ZSM-5 zeolite. In the model C3-C6 olefins, C3-C5 paraffins, and C6 + hydrocarbons are treated as lumped species, while ethanol, diethyl ether, ethylene, and ethane are treated individually. Nonlinear parameter estimation using quasilinearization and least squares as the objective function has been implemented to estimate rate constants, adsorption equilibrium constants, and activation energies. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate expressions successfully correlated the experimental data.
