The EAST coherent modes (CMs) during the inter-ELM phase are simulated by the electromagnetic six-field two-fluid module in BOUT++ framework. The fluctuation level of the electrostatic potential, electron pressure and density perturbations are comparable to the experiments, and the simulated electrostatic perturbation is around two orders of magnitude larger than the magnetic one in EAST CM. The frequency and poloidal wave number are consistent with experiments in the simulations of EAST CM equilibriums. The energy transfer between three-wave coupling indicates that the energy tends to transfer from medium-n to low-n modes in the early nonlinear phase, and the modes coupling effect in the nonlinear saturation phase is larger than that in the early nonlinear phase. Both the energy transfer and bispectral analysis show that the Ni fluctuation tends to generate the ‘single-mode’ coupling and Te tends to be ‘multiple-mode’, which indicates that the collapse of the density profile is larger than the electron temperature. The relative phase analysis is applied to evaluate whether the turbulence can extract the energy from density and temperature profiles. The result indicates that the density profile provides much more energy to drive the turbulence than electron temperature. The kinetic and magnetic energy transfer rates are used to understand the instability and turbulence driving mechanisms of the EAST CM. In the linear phase of the nonlinear simulation, the instability is driven by the peeling-ballooning mode and drift-Alfven wave (DAW), and the radial electric field and shear Alfven wave have large suppressing effects. The turbulence of EAST CM is a predominantly electrostatic mode, which corresponds to the Reynolds stress seven times larger than Maxwell stress. By analyzing large quantities of discharges in the unfavorable ion drift direction, I-mode operation has been confirmed in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. During the L-mode to I-mode transition, the energy confinement is improvement substantially by the formation of a high-temperature edge pedestal, while the particle confinement remains almost identical to that in the L-mode. Similar with I-mode observations on other devices, the Er profiles obtained by the eight-channel Doppler backscattering system (DBS8) (Hu et al 2017 Rev. Sci. Instrum. 88 073504) show a deeper edge Er well in the I-mode than that in the L-mode. Additionally a weak coherent mode (WCM) with the frequency range of 40–150 kHz is observed at the edge plasma with the radial extent of about 2–3 cm. WCM could be observed in both density fluctuation and radial electric field fluctuation, and the bicoherence analyses showed significant couplings between WCM and high frequency turbulence, implying that the Er fluctuation and the caused flow shear from WCM should play an important role during I-mode operation. In addition, a low-frequency oscillation with a frequency range of 5–10 kHz is always accompanied with WCM, where the geodesic acoustic model intensity decreases or disappears. The evidence shows that the a low-frequency oscillation may be a novel kind of limited cycle oscillation but further investigation is needed to explain the new properties such as the harmonics and obvious magnetic perturbations. By using the specific co-neutral beam injection (co-NBI) and counter-NBI systems on EAST, an alternating flow shear discharge has been obtained to study the impact of the flow shear on ballooning-driven edge localized modes (ELMs) at a fixed high collisionality (). The results reveal that the increased flow shear can significantly mitigate ELMs, or even totally suppress ELMs when the shear is large enough. Our simulations with BOUT support the observations on EAST, and further indicate that the increased can both reduce the linear growth rate of the ballooning mode and shorten its growth time (phase coherence time, PCT). The enhanced nonlinear interactions shorten the PCT of the ballooning mode, as validated by the bispectrum study on EAST. Dynamics of the pedestal between type-III ELMs have been studied by a particular designed four-step probe array on HL-2A tokamak. The recovery of the edge transport barrier (ETB) can be divided clearly into three different phases. Inconsistent with the dynamics during the type I ELMy discharge, our results on HL-2A show that the (electron) temperature pedestal is recovered first, well before the ELM crash, while the density and pressure pedestals are still evolving slowly until the next ELM. The fast recovery of the temperature pedestal can trigger a low-frequency electrostatic coherent mode (LFM) (20–120 kHz) in the edge plasma. Direct and indirect measurements reveal that the LFM can drive strong inward particle flux. After the excitation, the LFM can slow down the further recovery of the temperature pedestal. Yet, the excitation of the LFM may help the recovery of the density pedestal. The structure and excitation studies indicate that the LFM may be the ion temperature gradient driving mode (ITG) excited in the edge plasma and plays a critical role in the recovery of pedestal between type-III ELMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

This conference report summarizes the contributions to, and discussions at, the 7th Asia-Pacific Transport Working Group Meeting held at Nagoya University, Japan, during 5–8 June 2017. The topics of the meeting were organized under four main headings: (1) turbulence and blob at the boundary of magnetic topology, (2) model reduction and experiments for validation, (3) mode competition in turbulence and MHD driven by energetic particle, (4) mechanism determining plasma flows and their impact on transport and MHD. Coexisting dual kinetic geodesic acoustic modes (KGAMs) with similar characteristics have been observed with Langmuir probe arrays in the edge plasma of HL-2A tokamak with low density Ohmic discharge. The dual KGAMs are named a low-frequency GAM (LFGAM) and a high-frequency GAM (HFGAM), respectively. By changing the line averaged density from to , the study of ne and Te profiles indicate that collision damping rate plays a crucial role on exciting of dual KGAMs, especially for the higher frequency branch (HFGAM). With the application of modulating techniques, we provide direct proof that nonlinear interactions between GAMs and ambient turbulence (AT) show great difference at different radial positions. At the exciting position of GAM, the amplitude modulation of AT is dominant, indicating that GAM is generated in the energy-conserving triad interaction. After the exciting of GAMs, they will propagate both inward and outward. During the propagation, the phase modulation of AT is dominant, GAMs can rarely gain energy from AT, yet they can give back-reactions on AT through shearing effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

An electrostatic coherent mode with a frequency of kHz can be observed during the formation of transport barriers in high-confinement-mode plasma in the HL-2A tokamak, using reciprocating Langmuir probes. The mode drives a strong inward particle flux measured directly with four-tip probes with values comparable to the particle flux at the striking point in the divertor, which has also been validated by the measurement of other diagnostics. Several characteristics simultaneously indicate that the mode is an ion mode excited at the edge, which plays an important role in the formation of transport barriers besides particle diffusion. Turbulence in the pedestal region of the EAST tokamak has been observed and studied using reflectometry. In lower hybrid wave (LHW) or neutral beam injection (NBI) dominated heating plasma, a coherent mode (CM) was usually observed in the ELM-free phase just after the L-H transition. The CM rotated in the electron diamagnetic drift (EDD) direction in the laboratory frame with a poloidal wave number (kθ) of 0.5 cm−1–0.7 cm−1 and its frequency usually chirped from 80 – 100 kHz down to 40 – 50 kHz as the pedestal evolved. The appearance of this mode reduced the increasing rate of pedestal pressure, implying that the CM may have an effect on outward pedestal transport. This mode can exist every ten milliseconds and is finally replaced by broadband (BB) fluctuation in the later ELM-free phase. It was found that the appearance and disappearance of the CM was correlated to the pedestal pressure. In the inter-ELM phase, the pedestal turbulence is generally dominated by BB fluctuation with poloidal wave numbers from 0 to 3 cm−1 rotating in the EDD direction in the laboratory frame. Analysis shows that the pedestal pressure increasing rate dpe, ped/dt decreases with the amplitude of the BB fluctuation, implying that the BB fluctuation may play an important role in pedestal evolution. The turbulence and flows at the plasma edge during the L–I–H, L–I–L and single-step L–H transitions have been measured directly using two reciprocating Langmuir probe systems at the outer midplane with several newly designed probe arrays in the EAST superconducting tokamak. The E × B velocity, turbulence level and turbulent Reynolds stress at ∼1 cm inside the separatrix ramp-up in the last ∼20 ms preceding the single-step L–H transition, but remain nearly constant near the separatrix, indicating an increase in the radial gradients at the plasma edge. The kinetic energy transfer rate from the edge turbulence to the E × B flows is significantly enhanced only in the last ∼10 ms and peaks just prior to the L–H transition. The E × B velocity measured inside the separatrix, which is typically in the electron diamagnetic drift direction in the L-mode, decays towards the ion diamagnetic drift direction in response to fluctuation suppression at the onset of the single-step L–H, L–I–L as well as L–I–H transitions. One important distinction between the L–I–H and the L–I–L transitions has been observed, with respect to the evolution of the edge pressure gradient and mean E × B flow during the I-phase. Both of them ramp up gradually during the L–I–H transition, but change little during the L–I–L transition, which may indicate that a gradual buildup of the edge pedestal and mean E × B flow during the I-phase leads to the final transition into the H-mode. In addition, the transition data in EAST strongly suggest that the divertor pumping capability is an important ingredient in determining the transition behaviour and power threshold.
