Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

Unusually high power loads on the beryllium limiter caused by neutral beam re-ionisation, and much cooler divertor target surfaces were observed during the recent JET tokamak tritium campaign. As both phenomena are driven by scrape-off layer (SOL) physics, the SOL features of 72 tritium H-mode discharges and their deuterium references have been studied. The majority (70) of tritium H-mode discharges had exponentially decaying SOL profiles. The tritium plasmas are observed to have increased separatrix density and collisionality compared to their deuterium references. This is associated with $ \approx 2 - 3$ times broader SOL width for both density and temperature profiles. This is consistent with previous observations in highly collisional deuterium H-mode plasma on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (Sun et al 2015 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 57 125011) and interpreted as high collisionality enhancing cross-field transport across the separatrix and resulting in the broadening of near SOL above a critical value. The other two tritium H-mode discharges had near flat SOL density profiles, similar to the so-called ‘ density shoulder formation ’ observed in L-mode plasma. The SOL collisionality of these two pulses lies within the range of T pulses without density shoulder formation. This supports the conclusion of previous studies (Vianello et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 116014; Wynn et al 2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 056001) that increased collisionality is not sufficient for the formation of a ‘ density shoulder ’ and additional factors, likely divertor condition or interaction with neutrals, are required. JET tritium plasma provides evidence of favourable and unfavourable effects of enhanced cross-field SOL transport on machine operation. The larger limiter power loads due to re-ionisation of neutral beam injection observed in the T pulses relative to their D references has been shown to be consistent with the combined effects of the broadening of the SOL profile and larger beam ion Larmor radius. Abstract

The JT-60SA tokamak, being built under the Broader Approach agreement jointly by Europe and Japan, is due to start operation in 2019 and is expected to give substantial contributions to both ITER and DEMO scenario optimization. A broad set of preparation activities for an efficient start of the experiments on JT-60SA is being carried out, involving the elaboration of the Research Plan, advanced modelling in various domains, feasibility and conception studies of diagnostics and other sub-systems in connection with the priorities of the scientific programme, development and validation of operation tools. The logic and coherence of this approach, as well as the main activities undertaken are presented and summarized.

Since it is uncertain if ITER operation is compatible with type-l edge localized modes (ELMS), the study of alternative ELM regimes is an urgent issue. Abstract

Experiments have been performed to disentangle the individual role of tipper and lower triangularity on density buildup of lower single null, type-I ELMy H-mode discharges in JET. Comparison with corresponding data from ASDEX Upgrade allowed us to determine a dimensionless representation of the relation between the main chamber recycling and core density and to widen the triangularity variation in the data base. To incorporate the recycling flux density F in a dimensionless form, an effective scrape-off layer density n(e,SOL) proportional to Gamma(0.5) is introduced allowing us to,,SOL parametrize and scale the core density by the density rise factor (n) over bar (e)/n(e,SOL). The scaling uses edge-specific definitions of normalized Larmor radius, collisionality and beta. Rewritten in dimensional form, a behaviour is found which is very similar to energy confinement scalings for the ELM-averaged conditions considered here: the density rise factor exhibits an almost linear dependence on plasma current, a weak negative toroidal field dependence as well as power degradation. While a pronounced positive dependence of density buildup on the upper triangularity is observed, no significant correlation with the lower triangularity is found. In particular the dependences on plasma current and upper triangularity emphasize the importance of transport physics for the density buildup.

Abstract

Composition profiles of ultramicrotomed cross sectional samples of epilayers of Hg1-xCdxTe and superlattices grown by MOCVD are measured on a 10 nm scale using an analytical electron microscope. Results compare well with a numerical model for interdiffusion, making use of analytical expressions for the diffusion coefficient available in the literature. Absorption contrast in electron micrographs yield changes in apparent layer thicknesses that are in excellent agreement with the theoretical model. Computer simulations of interdiffused composition profiles, where temperature, deposition rate, and thickness of each individual layer are specified, together with annealing conditions and cooling rate to ambient temperature, have been successful in modeling the layer are specified, together with annealing conditions and cooling rate to ambient temperature, have been successful in modeling the interdiffused composition across various MCT superlattice boundaries.

Abstract

In 2003, the performance of the 'hybrid' regime was successfully validated in JET experiments up to βN = 2.8 at low toroidal field (1.7 T), with plasma triangularity and normalized Larmor radius (ρ*) corresponding to identical ASDEX Upgrade discharges. Stationary conditions have been achieved with the fusion figure of merit (H89.βN/q295) reaching 0.42 at q95 = 3.9. The JET discharges show similar MHD, edge and current profile behaviour, when compared with the ASDEX Upgrade. In addition, the JET experiments have extended the hybrid scenario operation at higher toroidal field of 2.4 T and lower ρ* towards the projected ITER values. Using this database, transport and confinement properties are characterized with respect to the standard H-mode regime. Moreover, trace tritium has been injected to assess the diffusion and convective coefficients of the fusion fuel. The maximization of confinement and stability properties provides, to this scenario, a good probability of achieving a high fusion gain at reduced plasma current for durations of up to 2000 s in ITER.

Abstract

Measurements of the concentration of ground state metal atoms in a boosted output discharge lamp show a ten-fold decrease in the number density when the boosting discharge is operating. Thisdecrease in the ground state population depends on the nature of the carrier gas, being most pronounced for neon, and also on the magnitude of the discharge current. Removal of atoms from the ground state is relatively slow, indicating that a heavy-body process is involved. Cataphoresis does not appear to play a significant role. The most likely process is shown to be aggregration of atoms to form clusters which are detected, for silver by measurements on an anomalous absorption band arising from Mie Scattering.

Abstract

A number of selected polymers have been irradiated with noble gas ions and investigated by optical microscopy, nuclear particle track chemical etching, absorption spectroscopy in both the visible and infrared, and by electron spin resonance (ESR). Parameters systematically varied included the projectile species (He + , Ne + , Ar + and Xe + ions), the energy of bombardment (25 keV to 2 MeV), and the total dose, or fluence (1 × 10 11 up to 3 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 ) A consolidated picture is built up of a radiation damaging process which is in general dominated by direct nuclear collisions between incident ions and carbon atoms in the polymeric chain. The most immediate formation of many new compounds is therefore vested in the physics and has little to do with any primary radiochemical process. Brief speculation is made on the formation of free radicals and carbon double bonding. Whereas electronically generated defects tend to recombine in Kapton easily, they play a dominant role in shaping the surface topography of irradiated Teflon. Even for doses as high as 3 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 the fundamental radiation effects have still not saturated. Highly doped polymers clearly behave distinctly different from carbon itself.

A new thermal ion source with an integrated target which is heated by electron bombardment to a temperature of 2500°C has been developed for the TRISTAN on-line fission product mass separator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Initial on-line tests demonstrated that this ion source can extend the range of accessible elements to the rare-earth region. Yields are presented for isotopes of Ce, Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, ho, Ga, Ge, As, Y, Zr, Nb, In, Sn and Sb.

Abstract

Nothwithstanding the well known drastic changes wrought upon the optical properties of ion beam irradiated polymers, no systematic search for the corresponding physical mechanism responsible can be found in the literature. Accordingly, a study was made of the depth profiles of optical absorption in a number of irradiated polymers, using radiation extending in wavelength from the ultraviolet, through the visible, and into the infrared. Work concentrated on the mass and dose (fluence) dependence of absorption for noble gas ions. It is shown that for visible light the shape of the depth absorption profile closely follows the distribution with depth of nuclear energy transfer processes, calculated in the normal fashion. This suggests that the optical absorption itself is directly due to polymer degradation by direct knock-on of atoms from the chains. A pronounced maximum in the dependence of the integrated absorption of visible light on projectile mass occurs for neon ions. Furthermore a similar mass dependence is demonstrated for the “kinematic factor” in nuclear collisions with carbon, thus supporting the direct knock-on hypothesis. Finally, an annealing of the irradiation induced polymer damage — a blackening becoming lighter — is also noted. It is ascribed to a specific photochemical reaction.

A vigorous program of ion-source development at TRISTAN has led to several types of ion sources that are especially suited to extended operation at a reactor-based ISOL facility. The latest of these is a high-temperature plasma ion source in which a 5-g 235 U target is located in the cathode and can be heated to 2500° C. The ion source has a lifetime of > 1000 h and produces a wide array of elements, including palladium. Off-line investigations indicate that the source functions primarily in an electron impact mode of ionization and exhibits typical ionization efficiencies of > 30% for xenon.

For 35 New Zealand soil samples of varied origin, estimates of total porosity and macro-porosity group were compared with measurements of these properties in an endeavour to judge the feasibility of making such estimates as part of the pedological field description. The estimates of total porosity group were made by visual observation of the surface roughness of the soil. To determine whether this latter quality was correctly judged, independent estimates of it were obtained from measurements on photographic negatives of the soils and were found to relate well with total porosity group estimates. Soils in which neither total porosity group estimate nor the measurements on the photographic negative agreed with total porosity were regarded as “exceptional”, and total porosity group estimates for such soils must be adjusted. Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.
