KCDC, the 'KASCADE Cosmic-ray Data Centre', is a web-based interface where initially the scientific data from the completed air-shower experiment KASCADE-Grande was made available for the astroparticle community as well as for the interested public. Over the past 7 years, we have continuously extended the data shop with various releases and increased both the number of detector components from the KASCADE-Grande experiment and the data sets and corresponding simulations. With the latest releases we added a new and independent data shop for a specific KASCADE-Grande event selection and by that created the technology for integrating further data shops and data of other experiments, like the data of the air-shower experiment MAKET-ANI in Armenia. In addition, we made available educational examples how to use the data, more than 100 cosmic ray energy spectra from various experiments, and recently attached a public server with access to Jupyter notebooks. In order to address solving these issues, the German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI) was created. In addition, we support activities for communicating our research field to the public. The approaches proposed by the project are based on the concept of data life cycle, which assumes a particular pipeline of data curation used for every unit of the data from the moment of its retrieval or creation through the stages of data preprocessing, analysis, publishing and archival. The movement towards unified data curation schemes is essential to increase the benefits gained in the analysis of geographically distributed or content-diverse data. Within the project, an infrastructure for effective astroparticle data curation and online analysis was developed. The important features of such an astroparticle DLC include scalability for handling large amounts of data, heterogeneous data integration, and exploiting parallel and distributed computing at every possible stage of the data processing. In this work we provide an overview of the technical challenges and solutions worked out so far by the GRADLCI group in the framework of a far-reaching analysis and data center. The `KASCADE Cosmic ray Data Centre' is a web portal (\url{https://kcdc.ikp.kit.edu}), where the data of the astroparticle physics experiment KASCADE-Grande are made available for the interested public. The KASCADE experiment was a large-area detector for the measurement of high-energy cosmic rays via the detection of extensive air showers. The multi-detector installations KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande stopped the active data acquisition in 2013 of all its components end of 2012 after more than 20 years of data taking. In several updates since our first release in 2013 with KCDC we provide the public measured and reconstructed parameters of more than 433 million air showers. In addition, KCDC provides meta data information and documentation to enable a user outside the community of experts to perform their own data analysis. Simulation data from three different high energy interaction models have been made available as well as a compilation of measured and published spectra from various experiments. 36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2019, Madison, USA, 24 Jul 2019 - 1 Aug 2019; PoS(ICRC2019)284 (2019)., A data life cycle (DLC) is a high-level data processing pipeline that involves data acquisition, event reconstruction, data analysis, publication, archiving, and sharing. For astroparticle physics a DLC is particularly important due to the geographical and content diversity of the research field. A dedicated and experiment spanning analysis and data centre would ensure that multi-messenger analyses can be carried out using state-of-the-art methods. The German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI) is a joint project of the KASCADE-Grande and TAIGA collaborations, aimed at developing a concept and creating a DLC prototype that takes into account the data processing features specific for the research field. An open science system based on the KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC), which is a web-based platform to provide the astroparticle physics data for the general public, must also include effective methods for distributed data storage algorithms and techniques to allow the community to perform simulations and analyses with sophisticated machine learning methods. The aim is to achieve more efficient analyses of the data collected in different, globally dispersed observatories, as well as a modern education to Big Data Scientist in the synergy between basic research and the information society. The contribution covers the status and future plans of the initiative.

Data 3(4), 56 (2018). doi:10.3390/data3040056, Modern large-scale astroparticle setups measure high-energy particles, gamma rays, neutrinos, radio waves, and the recently discovered gravitational waves. Ongoing and future experiments are located worldwide. The data acquired have different formats, storage concepts, and publication policies. Such differences are a crucial point in the era of Big Data and of multi-messenger analysis in astroparticle physics. We propose an open science web platform called ASTROPARTICLE.ONLINE which enables us to publish, store, search, select, and analyze astroparticle data. In the first stage of the project, the following components of a full data life cycle concept are under development: describing, storing, and reusing astroparticle data; software to perform multi-messenger analysis using deep learning; and outreach for students, post-graduate students, and others who are interested in astroparticle physics. Here we describe the concepts of the web platform and the first obtained results, including the meta data structure for astroparticle data, data analysis by using convolution neural networks, description of the binary data, and the outreach platform for those interested in astroparticle physics. Modern experimental astroparticle physics features large-scale setups measuring different messengers, namely high-energy particles generated by cosmic accelerators (e.g. supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei, etc): cosmic and gamma rays, neutrinos and recently discovered gravitational waves. Ongoing and future experiments are distributed over the Earth including ground, underground/underwater setups as well as balloon payloads and spacecrafts. The data acquired by these experiments have different formats, storage concepts and publication policies. Such differences are a crucial issue in the era of big data and of multi-messenger analysis strategies in astroparticle physics. We propose a service ASTROPARTICLE.ONLINE in the frame of which we develop an open science system which enables to publish, store, search, select and analyse astroparticle physics data. The cosmic-ray experiments KASCADE-Grande and TAIGA were chosen as pilot experiments to be included in this framework. In the first step of our initiative we will develop and test the following components of the full data life cycle concept: (i) describing, storing and reusing of astroparticle data; (ii) software for performing multi-experiment and multi-messenger analyses like deep-learning methods; (iii) outreach including example applications and tutorial for students and scientists outside the specific research field. In the present paper we describe the concepts of our initiative, and in particular the plans toward a common, federated astroparticle data storage.

The KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC) is a web-based platform to provide scientific data for the general public. KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande fully completed the data accumulation at the end of 2013 after more than 20 years of measurements. The main purpose of KCDC is to archive original data such as from KASCADE to offer long-term scientific data for the high-energy astroparticle physics community as well as for students and the interested public via a sophisticated web portal. Recently, a new version named NABOO was released, based on a completely new back-end database and software. In addition, the amount of data increased by factor 3 compared to the previous release. Data from the Grande detector array are now also available. In this contribution, the KCDC web portal and the data availability as well as future plans will be discussed.

In addition, KCDC provides the conceptional design, how the data can be treated and processed so that they are also usable outside the community of experts in the research field. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a feed additive (OmniGen-AF(®), reported to have immune modulating activity) on innate immunity and health events during the periparturient period in dairy heifers when immunity is suppressed. From 60 days prepartum through calving, supplemented heifers (n=20) received OmniGen-AF(®) daily and were compared with unsupplemented controls (n=20). Blood leukocyte innate immune activity (phenotype markers, phagocytic activity, and reactive oxygen species--ROS production) was measured prior to feeding (60 days prepartum), 30 days later, and on days 1, 7, 14, and 30 postpartum. Adverse health events (udder edema, ketosis, displaced abomasum, and death) and milk production were measured at calving and into early lactation. The fraction of leukocytes with measurable CD62L (L-selectin) on their surface from supplemented heifers tended to be greater during the periparturient period in treated heifers than controls (p=0.100). Likewise, leukocyte phagocytosis of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus during this time period tended to be greater in heifers supplemented with OmniGen-AF(®) (p=0.100). Conversely, ROS production in response to phorbol myristate acetate or when leukocytes were stimulated with killed S. aureus lysate tended to be greater among control heifers compared with supplemented animals (p=0.100). Supplemented heifers exhibited fewer incidents of udder edema than controls (p=0.030) and tended to exhibit a lower rate of new cases of mastitis (p=0.098); however, no differences were observed in milk somatic cell counts or level of milk production. Results demonstrate a positive role of OmniGen-AF(®) in amplifying leukocyte function consistent with antibacterial activity during the periparturient period, and support the continued study of dietary supplementation to enhance mammary gland health in dairy cows.

New data on the muon/electron ratio derived from the KASCADE extensive air shower experiment are presented. This ratio is known to be the most sensitive parameter in the determination of the mass of the primary particle when using ground array data. The particle numbers are measured with the KASCADE array comprising 500 m 2 of e/γ- and 620 m 2 of μ - detectors. The primary mass is inferred on an event-by-event basis by comparing the experimental data to corresponding EAS simulations. We observe a change towards a heavier composition with increasing energy above the knee. The sensitivity of this result to the specific hadronic interaction model employed in the simulations (e.g. VENUS and QGSJET) is discussed.

KASCADE-Grande is dedicated for investigations of cosmic-ray air showers in the primary energy range from 10 PeV to 1 EeV. The multi-detector system allows us to reconstruct charged particles, electron and muon numbers for individual air showers with high accuracies. Based on the shower size ($N_{ch}$) spectra of the charged particle component, the all-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays is reconstructed, where attenuation effects in the atmosphere are corrected by applying the constant intensity cut method. The energy calibration is performed by using CORSIKA simulations with high-energy interaction models QGSJET-II-2, QGSJET-II-4, EPOS 1.99 and SIBYLL 2.1, where FLUKA has been used as low-energy interaction model for all cases. In the different hadronic models, different abundances for shower particles are predicted. Such model differences in the observables will be compared and discussed in this contribution. Furthermore, by using data with increasing statistics, the updated energy spectra by means of different interaction models will be presented.

A new extensive air shower (EAS) experiment has been installed at the laboratory site of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The main aim of the KASCADE [1] project is the determination of the chemical composition in the energy range around and above the knee of the primary cosmic ray spectrum. The main advantage of the new installation is the simultaneous measurement of a large number of observables for each individual event. This is achieved by the combination of various advanced detection techniques for the electromagnetic, the muonic, and the hadronic component of the extensive air showers. Data taking with a large part of the experiment has started at the end of 1995. The estimated accuracy of air shower data is discussed for the various detector components of KASCADE and first very preliminary results are presented.
