Abstract

Sailors, indeed anyone interested in the development of sailing craft, will be for ever indebted to Joseph Needham. Today they will find with ease literature that describes the origins, characteristics, and development of sailing craft in the various regions of the world; the inter-relationships between natural products, and native hull stuctures and forms, sails' fabrics, shapes, and performance. They can learn, too, that the closestowing anchor, the water-tight bulkhead, the balanced rudder (and other features of the modern efficiency-conscious ship constructor) have all been adapted from the millenniaold, so-long-despised by Westerners, Chinese junk, just as has, late in this twentieth century, the stiffened sail of the modern high-performance yacht.

Abstract

Commander Derek Howse, who has died aged 78, was a man of many talents which he used unstintingly in time of war, and in times of peace for the public benefit. After a distinguished career in the Royal Navy he joined the Museum service, and rose in it to become the leading authority on the history of the buildings, instruments and astronomical timekeepers of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, on the solution in the eighteenth century of the problem of determining the longitude at sea by lunar distance and by chronometer, and on the development and use of radar at sea.Derek was the son of a Captain of the Royal Navy, and at the age of thirteen and a half years followed his father into the Navy as a Naval Cadet. In HMS Britannia (then the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth) for the next three and a half years Derek was given a very broad – for those, even more for present times – education, for it was in the sciences and the humanities, in marine engineering and in seamanship, before going to sea as a midshipman in the 16″-gun battleship HMS Rodney for some two years. He then completed his sub-lieutenant's qualifying courses in navigation, gunnery, torpedoes, anti-submarine warfare and signals in 1939, as the Second World War broke out, when he again went to sea.

Abstract

In the mid-16th century the English began to expand their merchant and fighting navies to sail beyond the waters of north-west Europe. This necessitated mathematical navigation, charts, and written and illustrated sailing directions; all, from the 1580s, were embodied in the printed ‘waggoners’ of the Dutch and were used in translation by the English seamen.

Writing in 1623, Samuel Purchas declaimed, in Purchas his Pilgrimes, ‘The Sea yields the world to the world, by this art of arts Navigation’. In those days navigation and its handmaid hydrography were, indeed, each more of an art than a science, though the British had made great progress in the preceding 50 years towards making them scientific. I have taken as my thesis today that it was not until these two positionfinding ‘arts’ had become thoroughly scientific that there could be a science of oceanography. So I have called navigation and hydrography oceanography's eyes, for they enable the oceanographer to know where he is in the ocean and where phenomena occur in the ocean, both prerequisites to the observation, collection and organisation of positive knowledge about the seas and the oceans, which I take to be the basis of scientific oceanography.

Abstract

I think Professor Taylor and I are at cross-purposes in our discussion of the influence of scientists upon the art of navigation before the nineteenth century. Dr. Freiesleben expressed the view that until 1800, ‘when our technical age began’, there was a big gap between what interested scientists and what the seaman could understand and apply, that men of science were too remote from practical requirements. The implication was that scientists were not concerned with seamen's problems nor seamen with obtaining scientific help. I pointed out that whatever the situation in the eighteenth century might have been, in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries improvements of a radical nature were made by scientists, working with and for seamen, in the means of practising the art of navigation, in particular by English scientists working in the latter part of the period under the aegis of Gresham College and the East India Company. This is historical fact, little known perhaps, but none the less fact. I certainly never intended it to be understood that the seaman-scientist relationship peculiar to this period and resulting in such important developments typified, to use Professor Taylor's expression, ‘the degree of cooperation between sailor and scientist prior to the nineteenth century’. I intended it to be understood as being descriptive of the situation or relationship peculiar to the period in which it occurred, roughly 1550–1640 and more particularly 1598–1637.

In his paper ‘Two Mariner's Astrolabes’ (Journal, 9, 338) Dr. D. J. Price stated that hitherto only seven mariner's astrolabes had been found and the details published. He then described two more mariner's astrolabes, the Dundee astrolabe of 1555, discovered some months previously, and the Kronborg astrolabe of 1600, discovered in 1928.
