1. Observation of the temperature and barometric effects on the cosmic muon flux by the DANSS detector

Abstract: Abstract The DANSS detector (Alekseev et al. in JINST 11:P11011, 2016) is located directly below a commercial reactor core at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant. Such a position provides an overburden about 50 m.w.e. in vertical direction. In terms of the cosmic rays it occupies an intermediate position between surface and underground detectors. The sensitive volume of the detector is a cubic meter of plastic scintillator with fine segmentation and combined PMT and SiPM readout, surrounded by multilayer passive and active shielding. The detector can reconstruct muon tracks passing through its sensitive volume. The main physics goal of the DANSS experiment implies the antineutrino spectra measurements at various distances from the source. This is achieved by means of a lifting platform so that the data is taken in three positions – 10.9, 11.9 and 12.9 meters from the reactor core. The muon data were collected for nearly four calendar years. The overburden parameters $$\langle E_{thr}\cos \theta \rangle $$ ⟨ E thr cos θ ⟩ and $$\langle E_{thr} \rangle $$ ⟨ E thr ⟩ , as well as the temperature and barometric correlation coefficients are evaluated separately for the three detector positions and, in each position, in three ranges of the zenith angle – for nearly vertical muons with $$\cos \theta >0.9$$ cos θ > 0.9 , for nearly horizontal muons with $$\cos \theta

Abstract: DANSS is a highly segmented 1 m3 plastic scintillator detector. Its 2500 one meter long scintillator strips have a Gd-loaded reflective cover. The DANSS detector is placed under an industrial 3.1 GWth reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant 350 km NW from Moscow. The distance to the core is varied on-line from 10.7 m to 12.7 m. The reactor building provides about 50 m water-equivalent shielding against the cosmic background. DANSS detects almost 5000 ν˜e per day at the closest position with the cosmic background less than 3%. The inverse beta decay process is used to detect ν˜e. Sterile neutrinos are searched for assuming the 4ν model (3 active and 1 sterile ν). The exclusion area in the Δm142,sin2⁡2θ14 plane is obtained using a ratio of positron energy spectra collected at different distances. Therefore results do not depend on the shape and normalization of the reactor ν˜e spectrum, as well as on the detector efficiency. Results are based on 966 thousand antineutrino events collected at three different distances from the reactor core. The excluded area covers a wide range of the sterile neutrino parameters up to sin2⁡2θ14

They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Abstract: The complexation of styryl dyes 4-[(E)-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)]-1-ethylpyridinium perchlorate and trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide with cucurbit[n]urils (CBn) (n = 6, 7) in aqueous solutions in the presence of sodium sulfate with a concentration of 0 to 1 mol/L has been studied by stationary and time-resolved optical spectroscopy, electrochemical, and quantum chemical methods. Adding the electrolyte to the solution decomposes 1 : 1 inclusion complexes with the dyes (D+ · CBn) due to competitive formation of complexes of the cavitand with sodium cations: Na+ · CBn and Na+ · CBn · Na+. Their total formation constants have been determined to be β = 2760 and 168 600 M−2 for CB7 and CB6, respectively, which agrees with the results of quantum chemical calculations. At the same time, no evidence of the presence of Na+ · CBn · D+ type complexes has been found in solutions.

7. The performance of a new Kuraray wavelength shifting fiber YS-2

Abstract: Wavelength shifting fibers are widely used for light collection from scintillation counters, which allow connection of various scintillation planes to relatively small photocathodes of photodetectors and especially tiny photocathodes of silicon photo-multipliers. In October 2020 Kuraray announced production of a new branch of faster fibers. We performed a comparison of the new fiber YS-2 to a mature Y-11. The fiber YS-2 demonstrated decay time nearly two times shorter than that of Y-11: $\approx$4.0 ns versus $\approx$7.4 ns. At the same time its light yield and attenuation length are as good as of Y-11, which makes YS-2 a good choice for timing scintillation detectors., 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in JINST, the accepted version, minor revisions

Abstract: [2+2] Photocycloaddition of a series of styryl dyes (a, b, and c, see text) in the cavity of cucurbit[8]uril (CB8) in aqueous solutions has been studied by optical spectroscopy. The complex formation constants were calculated for the 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 complexes of the styryl dyes with CB8. The optimal CB8 to dye molar ratios that correspond to the highest concentrations of the 2 : 1 complexes in the solution have been determined as 0.5, 0.3, and 1 for dyes a, b, and c, respectively. The quantum yields of photocycloaddition have been calculated from the results of dye photolysis in the presence of CB8: 0.06, 0.02, and 0.04 for a, b, and c, respectively. The fluorescence decay kinetics has been studied on the picosecond timescale. The lifetimes found are 1–2 ps, which correspond to the characteristic time of the solvation shell effect on the redistribution of the dye charge in the excited state. The long component of the fluorescence decay on the order of tens of picosecond is also observed. This component decreases in the presence of CB8, indicating the formation of dimeric state.

Abstract: Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. Abstract: The photocycloaddition of styryl dyes 1, mediated by 1:2 hostguest complexes with cucurbit[8]urils (CB[8]), was studied by fluorescence upconversion techniques. The lifetime of 14.5 ps for photoexcited 1 in aqueous solution and 3.8 ps for that inside the complexes were gained from the fluorescence decay, the rate constant of quenching being obtained within the diffusion control limit. Calculations confirmed that unexcited pairs of 1 inside CB[8] does not fit the topochemical principles. So a translational movement is required to produce a reaction-ready structure that is in agreement with the timeresolved fluorescence anisotropy measured in the range of 5 ps.

Abstract: Fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemistry methods have been applied to study the adsorption of complexes of styryl dye, trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide (DSMI), with cucurbit[6]uril (CB6) on the surface of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (with an average size of 15 nm) prepared by silver nitrate reduction using sodium borohydride. It is established that in the presence of AgNPs the intensity of fluorescence of the DSMI@CB6 complex decreases by approximately 40%; the fluorescence of only free complexes in the bulk solution is observed, and the fluorescence of the complexes, which were adsorbed on the AgNPs surface, is completely quenched. The Frumkin isotherm (adsorption equilibrium constant B = 7.0 × 106 L/mol) is used to describe the adsorption. In addition, the binding constant of the inclusion host–guest DSMI@CB6 complex is adjusted: K = 106 L/mol.

Abstract: The Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target polarimeter is employed by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to measure the absolute polarization of each colliding proton beam. Polarimeter detectors and data acquisition were upgraded in 2015 to increase solid angle, energy range and energy resolution. These upgrades and advanced systematic error analysis along with improved beam intensity and polarization in RHIC runs 2015 ($E_\textrm{beam}=100\,\text{GeV}$) and 2017 ($255\,\text{GeV}$) allowed us to greatly reduce the statistical and systematic uncertainties for elastic spin asymmetries, $A_N(t)$ and $A_NN(t)$, in the Coulomb-nuclear interference momentum transfer range $0.0013, Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. 16. DANSS experiment: current status and future plans

Abstract: DANSS is a solid scintillator antineutrino detector located right below a 3 GWth reactor of the Kalininskaya NPP. One cubic meter of the sensitive volume with fine segmentation makes it possible to achieve an unprecedented counting rate of about 5000 IBD events per day, keeping the level of cosmic background below 2%. New physics with sterile neutrino is searched for by performing spectral measurements at varying distance from the reactor core. Contributions to the applied antineutrino physics include reactor power measurements and fuel analysis. Commissioned in 2016, DANSS accumulated about 4 million antineutrino events by this fall. Advances in the data analysis will be reported, including improvements in the energy calibration and the optimization of the selection cuts. DANSS upgrade plans include new scintillator strips with higher light collection efficiency and better homogeneity. Expected improvement in the energy resolution will significantly increase the experiment sensitivity to the light sterile neutrino.

Abstract: The time-resolved Stokes shift of fluorescence of styryl dye, trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)-styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide (DASPI), and its host-guest complexes with cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) was studied by up-conversion technique on a 5 ps time scale. In all cases, the solvation time correlation function – that describes relaxation of the fluorescent state - contains two components. The time constant of the first component, which is related to the vibrational relaxation of the dye cation, increases from 118 fs without CB[6] to 224 fs in the presence CB[6]. It suggests the production of CB[6] complexes to disturb the hydrogen-bond net in the vicinity of DASPI cation. The time constant of the second component, which is associated with solvation, changes from 0.81 ps without CB[6] to 1.15 ps in the presence of the cavitand. The observed increase can be related to the displacement of the dye cation deeper into CB[6] that allows considering DASPI-CB[6] complexes as a light-controlled molecular machine with a response time on the picosecond scale.

Abstract: Photophysical properties of aqueous solutions of the styryl dye 4-[(E)-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-ethylpyridinium] perchlorate (1) in the presence of cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]; n = 5, 6, 8) have been studied by fluorescent spectroscopy methods. The fluorescence intensity of a 10–6 mol L–1 solution of 1 increases by a factor of 12.6 upon the formation of 1 : 1 inclusion complexes with CB[6] or 1.3 in complexes with CB[8]. Upon the formation of inclusion complexes, the average lifetime of the electronically excited state of 1 increases to about 1 ns for both CB[6] and CB[8]. On the basis of fluorescence anisotropy measurements, the rotational relaxation times were estimated to be 408, 314, and 183 ps for the complexes with CB[6], CB[8], and for unbound 1, respectively. Using the fluorescence titration method developed for the case of poorly soluble cavitands, the binding constant of 1 with CB[6] was determined to be 1.1 × 105 L mol–1. The addition of CB[5] does not lead to changes in the photophysical properties of a solution of 1, indicating the absence of complexes between CB[5] and 1. It has been found on the basis of the experimental data that the fluorescence rate constant of 1 decreases about twice in the complex with CB[8], but doubles in the complex with CB[6].

Abstract: International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract: The electronics of the data acquisition system based on silicon photomultipliers is briefly described. The elements and modules of the system were designed and constructed at ITEP especially for the DANSS detector. Examples of digitized signals obtained with the presented electronic modules and selected results on processing of the DANSS engineering data-taking run in spring 2016 are given.

Abstract: Polarimeters were developed to measure the polarization of the proton beam at RHIC in relative scale through the asymmetry measurement of the elastic proton-carbon scattering. Recoil carbon ions with kinetic energy of 400 ≤ E ≤ 900 keV were detected by silicon strip detectors installed at 90° with respect to the beam. The absolute polarization is given by normalizing against another polarimeter implemented at RHIC, namely a polarized hydrogen gas jet polarimeter. In this report, the details of polarization measurements, data analysis, and systematic uncertainties are discussed based on the data taken during √s = 200 GeV operation of Run05 at RHIC.

23. Improving results on transverse double spin asymmetries in the CNI region at STAR

Abstract: Double spin effects in polarized pp-elastic scattering in the Coulomb nuclear interference (CNI) region are sensitive to small contributions to the nuclear amplitude in addition to Pomeron exchange dominating at high energies. Measurements of double spin asymmetries require external luminosity normalization using collision counts for all spin combinations. Several possible sources of such data from various STAR subsystems were thoroughly analyzed to make the best choice. BBC arrays were found to be free of double spin effects to the level of ∼ 2 × 10−4 thus leading to the systematic uncertainty ∼10−3 in the value of (ANN + ASS)/2.

Abstract: DANSSino is a reduced pilot version of a solid-state detector of reactor antineutrinos (to be created within the DANSS project and installed under the industrial 3 GW(th) reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant -- KNPP). Numerous tests performed at a distance of 11 m from the reactor core demonstrate operability of the chosen design and reveal the main sources of the background. Abstract: Elastic scattering of polarized protons at small four momentum transfer squared t is described by interference of Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes. Coulomb amplitude is well calculable by QED and such interference provides a unique opportunity to study the nuclear amplitude. At high energies this amplitude is believed to be dominated by Pomeron exchange. Measurement of asymmetries can provide evidence for contribution of other Reggeons, including hypothetical Odderon. Polarized proton collider at RHIC facility is a perfect place for such experiment.A one‐week dedicated run with special beam optics in June 2009 allowed us to collect statistics of more than 30 millions of elastic triggers with transversely polarized beams in the ‐t range 0.005–0.035 (GeV/c)2 at s = 200 GeV. In this paper we present preliminary results of single and double transverse spin asymmetries.

Abstract: Precise measurements of the single spin asymmetry ${A}_{N}$, and the double spin asymmetry ${A}_{NN}$, in proton-proton ($pp$) elastic scattering in the region of four-momentum transfer squared $0.001l\ensuremath{-}tl0.032\text{ }\text{ }(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$ have been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) polarized proton beam. We present measurements of ${A}_{N}$ and ${A}_{NN}$ at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=6.8$ and 13.7 GeV. These spin-dependent observables are sensitive to the poorly known hadronic spin-dependent amplitudes. Comparing ${A}_{N}$ at different energies, a $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the hadronic single spin-flip amplitude is suggested. A hadronic double spin-flip amplitude from the ${A}_{NN}$ data is consistent with zero within a 2-$\ensuremath{\sigma}$ level. We also present $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{T}$, estimated from the measured ${A}_{NN}$ data. The results for $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{T}$ are consistent with zero. Our results provide significant constraints toward a comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanism for $pp$ elastic scattering.

Abstract: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is designed to provide collisions of high energy polarized protons for the quest of understanding the proton spin structure. Polarized proton collisions at a beam energy of 100 GeV have been achieved in RHIC since 2001. Recently, polarized proton beam was accelerated to 250 GeV in RHIC for the first time. Unlike accelerating unpolarized protons, the challenge for achieving high energy polarized protons is to fight the various mechanisms in an accelerator that can lead to partial or total polarization loss due to the interaction of the spin vector with the magnetic fields. We report on the progress of the RHIC polarized proton program. We also present the strategies of how to preserve the polarization through the entire acceleration chain, i.e. a 200 MeV linear accelerator, the Booster, the AGS and RHIC.

Abstract: The spin physics program at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) requires knowledge of the beam polarization to better than 5%. Such a goal is made the more difficult by the lack of knowledge of the analyzing power of high energy nuclear physics processes. To overcome this, a polarized hydrogen jet target was constructed and installed at one intersection region in RHIC where it intersects both beams and utilizes the precise knowledge of the jet atomic hydrogen beam polarization to measure the analyzing power in proton- proton elastic scattering in the nuclear Coulomb interference (CNI) region at the prescribed RHIC proton beam energy. The reverse reaction is used to assess the absolute beam polarization. Simultaneous measurements taken with fast high statistics polarimeters that measure the p-carbon elastic scattering process also in the CNI region use the jet results to calibrate the latter. In this presentation, the status of the polarized jet target mechanics, operation, detector systems, and data analysis results are described. The statistical accuracies as well as the systematic uncertainties will be discussed.

Abstract: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory provides polarized proton beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure. For polarimetry, carbon-proton and proton-proton scattering is used in the Coulomb nuclear interference region at small momentum transfer ($-t$). Fast polarization measurements of each beam are carried out with carbon fiber targets at several times during an accelerator store. A polarized hydrogen gas jet target is needed for absolute normalization over multiple stores, while the target polarization is constantly monitored in a Breit-Rabi polarimeter. In 2005, the jet polarimeter has been used with both RHIC beams. Abstract: The relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) as the first high energy polarized proton collider was designed to provide polarized proton collisions at a maximum beam energy of 250 GeV. It has been providing collisions at a beam energy of 100 GeV since 2001. Equipped with two full Siberian snakes in each ring, polarization is preserved during the acceleration from injection to 100 GeV with careful control of the betatron tunes and the vertical orbit distortions. However, the intrinsic spin resonances beyond 100 GeV are about a factor of two stronger than those below 100 GeV making it important to examine the impact of these strong intrinsic spin resonances on polarization survival and the tolerance for vertical orbit distortions. Polarized protons were accelerated to the record energy of 250 GeV in RHIC with a polarization of 46% measured at top energy in 2006. The polarization measurement as a function of beam energy also shows some polarization loss around 136 GeV, the first strong intrinsic resonance above 100 GeV. This paper presents the results and discusses the sensitivity of the polarization survival to orbit distortions.

Abstract: The polarized hydrogen Jet target at RHIC continues its mission to provide absolute calibration for the polarized proton beam polarimeters at RHIC. Data were collected at incoming beam momenta of 100, 24, and 32 GeV/c respectively. The statistical and systematic accuracy of the jet data at 100 GeV/c achieved its goal of statistical accuracy of measuring the beam polarization to 3% in Run 5. Attempts at reducing the jet systematic uncertainty due to molecular hydrogen are also described.

Abstract: The 2005 run (RUN05) was the first extended operation of the polarized RHIC‐pp program. Throughout 3 months of running, polarization measurements were regularly executed every 2 ∼ 3 hours during the beams at storage energy 100GeV using RHIC pC‐polarimeters. These measurements were performed under different beam conditions, i.e., intensity, emittance, backgrounds, cumulated radiation damage on detectors and so on. The stability of measurements under these various conditions is a major concern and is discussed in detail.

Abstract: Polarized proton beam has been accelerated and stored at 100GeV in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to study spin effects in the hadronic reactions. The essential equipment includes four Siberian snakes and eight spin rotators in two RHIC rings, a partial snake in the AGS, fast relative polarimeters, and ac dipoles in the AGS and RHIC. This paper summarizes the performance of RHIC as a polarized proton collider and of AGS as the injector to RHIC.

Abstract: Preliminary results from the ’03 RHIC Proton Spin Run on the spin dependence in the elastic scatterring of polarized protons off a carbon target at very low momentum transfer (0.005 < |t| < 0.05 GeV2/c2) are presented and discussed. Proton polarimeters based on this process are used in RHIC and AGS to measure reliably and in very short times the polarization of the proton beams. Polarimetry results from the just completed RHIC polarized proton run are also presented.

Abstract: We successfully injected polarized protons in both RHIC rings and maintained polarization during acceleration up to 100 GeV per ring using two Siberian snakes in each ring. Each snake consists of four helical superconducting dipoles which rotate the polarization by 180° about a horizontal axis. This is the first time that polarized protons have been accelerated to 100 GeV.

Abstract: The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}l\ensuremath{-}tl4.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ $(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/c{)}^{2}$, was measured with a $21.7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to nonflip amplitude, ${r}_{5}$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\mathrm{R}\mathrm{e}{r}_{5}=0.088\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.058$ and $\mathrm{I}\mathrm{m}{r}_{5}=\ensuremath{-}0.161\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.226$.

Abstract: The Siberian snakes are powerful tools in preserving polarization in high energy accelerators has been demonstrated at the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Equipped with two full Siberian snakes in each ring, polarization is preserved during acceleration from injection to 100 GeV. However, the Siberian snakes also introduce a new set of depolarization resonances, i.e. snake resonances as first discoverd by Lee and Tepikian [1]. The intrinsic spin resonances above 100 GeV are about a factor of two stronger than those below 100 GeV which raises the challenge to preserve the polarization up to 250 GeV. In 2009, polarized protons collided for the first time at the RHIC design store energy of 250 GeV. This paper presents the experimental measurements of snake resonances at RHIC. The plan for avoiding these resonanances is also presented.

Abstract: The RHIC polarized proton complex utilizes polarimeters in each of the Blue and Yellow beams that measure the beam polarization through the p-Carbon elastic scattering process in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference kinematic region. This along with a Polarized Hydrogen Jet Target that utilizes the proton-proton elastic scattering process to first measure the analyzing power of the reaction and using the reverse process to measure the beam polarization. The latter is used to calibrate the p-Carbon polarimeters at the desired beam energy. In Run 9 RHIC ran with beams at center-of-mass energies of 200 and 500 GeV respectively. The higher beam intensities as well as the fact that the 250 GeV beam size is much smaller than that at 100 GeV resulted in significantly higher rates seen by the polarimeters and led to observed instability. In this paper, we will discuss the problems encountered and the tests that were carried out using the AGS as a proxy in an attempt to solve the problems and the path forward we took towards the upcoming polarized proton Run11.
