Abstract: The spin structure functions g 1 for the proton and the deuteron have been measured over a wide kinematic range in x and Q 2 using 1.6 and 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident upon polarized NH3 and ND3 targets at Jefferson Lab. Scattered electrons were detected in the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, for 0.05 Q 2 5 GeV 2 and W 3 GeV . The first moments of g 1 for the proton and deuteron are presented – both have a negative slope at low Q 2 , as predicted by the extended Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn sum rule. The first extraction of the generalized forward spin polarizability of the proton γ 0 p is also reported. This quantity shows strong Q 2 dependence at low Q 2 . Our analysis of the Q 2 evolution of the first moment of g 1 shows agreement in leading order with Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. However, a significant discrepancy is observed between the γ 0 p data and Chiral Perturbation calculations for γ 0 p , even at the lowest Q 2 .

Abstract: We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry A{sub 1} on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton ({sup 15}NH{sub 3}) and deuteron ({sup 15}ND{sub 3}) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present paper, we concentrate on our results for A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) and the related ratio g{sub 1}/F{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) in the resonance and the deep inelastic regions for our lowest and highest beam energies, covering a range in momentum transfer Q{sup 2} from 0.05 to 5.0 GeV{sup 2} and in final-state invariant mass W up to about 3 GeV. Our data show detailed structure in the resonance region, which leads to a strong Q{sup 2}--dependence of A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) for W below 2 GeV. At higher W, a smooth approach to the scaling limit, established by earlier experiments, can be seen, but A{sub 1}(x,Q{sup 2}) is not strictly Q{sup 2}--independent. We add significantly to the world data set at high x, up to x = 0.6. Our data exceed the SU(6)-symmetric quark model expectation for both the proton and the deuteron whilemore » being consistent with a negative d-quark polarization up to our highest x. This data set should improve next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD fits of the parton polarization distributions.« less

Abstract: The contribution of this paper is a novel non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) system capable of rendering motion within a video sequence in artistic styles. A variety of cartoon-style motion cues may be inserted into a video sequence, including augmentation cues (such as streak lines, ghosting, or blurring) and deformation cues (such as squash and stretch or drag effects). Users may select from the gamut of available styles by setting parameters which influence the placement and appearance of motion cues. Our system draws upon techniques from both the vision and the graphics communities to analyse and render motion and is entirely automatic, aside from minimal user interaction to bootstrap a feature tracker. We demonstrate successful application of our system to a variety of subjects with complexities ranging from simple oscillatory to articulated motion, under both static and moving camera conditions with occlusion present.

Abstract: Accurate measurements of the p(e,e?p)pi0 reaction were performed at Q^2=0.127(GeV/c)^2 in the Delta resonance energy region. The experiments at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator used an 820 MeV polarized electron beam with the out of plane magnetic spectrometer system (OOPS). In this paper we report the first simultaneous determination of both the TL and TL? (``fifth" or polarized) cross sections at low Q^{2} where the pion cloud contribution dominates the quadrupole amplitudes (E2 and C2). The real and imaginary parts of the transverse-longitudinal cross section provide both a sensitive determination of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude and a test of reaction calculations. Comparisons with model calculations are presented. The empirical MAID calculation gives the best overall agreement with this accurate data. The parameters of this model for the values of the resonant multipoles are |M_{1+}(I=3/2)|= (40.9 \pm 0.3)10^{-3}/m_pi, CMR= C2/M1= -6.5 \pm 0.3%, EMR=E2/M1=-2.2 \pm 0.9%, where the errors are due to the experimental uncertainties.

Abstract: We report on the design and performance of compact detector packages currently installed in the four magnetic out-of-plane spectrometers for electron scattering experiments at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. The detector packages have been designed to meet the mechanical requirements arising from out-of-plane particle detection. They offer good trajectory and momentum reconstruction, particle identification and time-of-flight measurements for electrons, pions, protons, and deuterons with large momentum bites and in broad kinematical ranges and high luminosities. The detectors have so far been used with great success in out-of-plane measurements of 12 C ( e → , e ′ p ) , 2 H ( e → , e ′ p ) , virtual Compton scattering below pion threshold and in studies of the N → Δ transition in both exclusive reaction channels 1 H ( e → , e ′ p ) π 0 and 1 H ( e → , e ′ π + )n .

Abstract: New cross sections for the reaction e p-->e p eta are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q2 = 0.25--1.5 (GeV/c)(2). This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Newly observed structure at W approximately 1.65 GeV is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted with known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.

Abstract: The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q2) has been extracted in the range 0.7≤Q2≤6.0(GeV/c)2 from cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in coincidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are compared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimensional scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract: Results from a measurement of the reaction 2H(+,pp)  at T+ = 239 MeV are presented. Because two protons were detected, the measurement was sensitive to events which involved both nucleons in a substantial way. Differential distributions are compared to the predictions of simple models. An integrated cross section for SCX (single charge exchange), with the emmision of two protons each with kinetic energy >25 MeV, is presented

Abstract: This paper presents a large solid angle measurement of the positive pion absorption cross section on 4 He and its decomposition into partial channels. The total absorption cross sections at incident pion kinetic energies of Tp1570, 118, 162, and 239 MeV are 3565, 5264, 5165, and 2762 mb, respectively. These values are lower than those reported in some previous experiments. At all pion energies a large fraction of the absorption cross section is due to multinucleon channels. @S0556-2813~98!03108-2#

Abstract: Results from a 4p solid angle measurement of the reaction p 14 He! pppn at incident pion energies of Tp15 70, 118, 162, 239, and 330 MeV are presented. Integrated cross sections are given for the reactions where three nucleons participate, leading to energetic ( ppp )o r ( ppn ) final states, and for states where four nucleons are involved ( pppn ). The two three-nucleon absorption modes were investigated in particular, and an energy dependent isospin ratio of the cross sections of s ppn /s ppp 53.661.3, 2.660.5, 1.860.3, 1.460.2, and 1.860.6 was determined from 70 to 330 MeV. The differential cross sections were described by a complete set of eight independent variables and compared to simple cascade and phase space models. From this analysis the contributions from initial state interactions to the multinucleon absorption cross sections were found to be more important at higher pion energies, while those from final state interactions are stronger at lower energies. However, both mechanisms combined were found to account for not more than one-third of the total pppn multinucleon yield. The remaining strength is reasonably well reproduced by phase space models, but shows a dependence on the incident pion’s orbital angular momentum. The isospin structure of the ( ppp ) and ( ppn ) final states is not understood, nor are some structures in their distributions. The four-nucleon yield ( pppn ) was found to be weak ~1‐8 % of the total absorption cross section! and shows no evidence for a ‘‘double-D’’ excitation. @S0556-2813~97!03210-X#

Abstract: The distributions of protons after the absorption of positive pions by 3 He at 118, 162 and 239 MeV are presented. A decomposition of the three-nucleon cross section in terms of initial state interactions and other processes is given, based upon simple models. A clear signal of initial state interactions is visible in the data, diminishing at the lower energies.

Abstract: A Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS) has been designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute to study multiparticle final states following pion-nucleus absorption. It consists of a 28-sector cylinder of plastic scintillators of 1.6 m active length and 1.4 m diameter, two cylindrical wire chambers, and two 14-sector plastic scintillator end-caps which close each end. The nearly 4π solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The design and the performance of the LADS detector are presented.

Abstract: Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P{sub LL}-P{sub TT}/epsilon and P{sub LT}, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha{sub E}(Q{sup 2}) and beta{sub M}(Q{sup 2}) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q{sup 2} = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV{sup 2}. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q{sup 2}-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Abstract: Measurements have been made of [pi][sup +] absorption on [sup 3]He at [ital T][sub [pi]][sup +]=118, 162, and 239 MeV using the Large Acceptance Detector System. The nearly 4[pi] solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The total absorption cross section is reported. In addition, the total cross section is divided into components in which only two or all three nucleons play a significant role in the process. These are the first direct measurements of the total and three nucleon absorption cross sections.

Abstract: The first measurement of two-nucleon pion absorption in 4 He at 1 GeV/ c has been performed at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchroton. Both the (π + , pp) and (π + , pn) modes were measured and clearly identified, even at this energy. An isospin dependence was obtained which was different from that in the Δ-energy region.

Abstract: The neutron elastic magnetic form factor was extracted from quasielastic electron scattering on deuterium over the range Q;{2}=1.0-4.8 GeV2 with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. High precision was achieved with a ratio technique and a simultaneous in situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency. Neutrons were detected with electromagnetic calorimeters and time-of-flight scintillators at two beam energies. The dipole parametrization gives a good description of the data.

Abstract: We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process via the H$(e,e'p)\gamma$ exclusive reaction in the nucleon resonance region, at backward angles. Results are presented for the $W$-dependence at fixed $Q^2=1$ GeV$^2$, and for the $Q^2$-dependence at fixed $W$ near 1.5 GeV. The VCS data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions. The observed $Q^2$-dependence is smooth. The measured ratio of H$(e,e'p)\gamma$ to H$(e,e'p)\pi^0$ cross sections emphasizes the different sensitivity of these two reactions to the various nucleon resonances. Finally, when compared to Real Compton Scattering (RCS) at high energy and large angles, our VCS data at the highest $W$ (1.8-1.9 GeV) show a striking $Q^2$- independence, which may suggest a transition to a perturbative scattering mechanism at the quark level., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: A large acceptance detector system (LADS) has been designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute to study multi-particle final states after pion-nucleus absorption. It consists of a 28-sector cylinder of plastic scintillator of 1.6 m active length and 1.5 m diameter, and two cylindrical wire chambers; two 14-sector endcaps of plastic scintillator close each end.

Abstract: The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for $1.7l{Q}^{2}l4.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ electroproduction on protons at $W=1.15\ensuremath{-}1.69$ GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent ${Q}^{2}$ behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$N(1440)P${}_{11}$ transition. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude ${A}_{1/2}$, which is large and negative at ${Q}^{2}=0$, becomes large and positive at ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\simeq}2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, and then drops slowly with ${Q}^{2}$. The longitudinal helicity amplitude ${S}_{1/2}$, which was previously found from CLAS $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{ep}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0},\mathit{en}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ data to be large and positive at ${Q}^{2}=0.4,0.65\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, drops with ${Q}^{2}$. Available model predictions for ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$N(1440)P${}_{11}$ allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P${}_{11}$ as a first radial excitation of the $3q$ ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for ${Q}^{2}l1$ GeV${}^{2}$ that the presentation of N(1440)P${}_{11}$ as a q$^{3}\mathrm{G}$ hybrid state is ruled out.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. Abstract: The exclusive electroproduction process $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{'}n{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ was measured in the range of the photon virtuality ${Q}^{2}=1.7\text{\ensuremath{-}}4.5 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, and the invariant mass range for the $n{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ system of $W=1.15\text{\ensuremath{-}}1.7 \mathrm{GeV}$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. For the first time, these kinematics are probed in exclusive ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ production from protons with nearly full coverage in the azimuthal and polar angles of the $n{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ center-of-mass system. The $n{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ channel has particular sensitivity to the isospin \textonehalf{} excited nucleon states, and together with the $p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ final state will serve to determine the transition form factors of a large number of resonances. The largest discrepancy between these results and present modes was seen in the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{{\mathit{LT}}^{'}}$ structure function. In this experiment, 31,295 cross section and 4,184 asymmetry data points were measured. Because of the large volume of data, only a reduced set of structure functions and Legendre polynomial moments can be presented that are obtained in model-independent fits to the differential cross sections.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.

Abstract: New cross sections for the reaction $\mathit{ep}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{'}\ensuremath{\eta}p$ are reported for total center-of-mass energy $W=1.5\text{\ensuremath{-}}2.3$ GeV and invariant squared momentum transfer ${Q}^{2}=0.13\text{\ensuremath{-}}3.3$ GeV${}^{2}$. This large kinematic range allows the extraction of new information about response functions, photocouplings, and $\ensuremath{\eta}N$ coupling strengths of baryon resonances. A sharp structure is seen at $W~1.7$ GeV. The shape of the differential cross section is indicative of the presence of a $P$-wave resonance that persists to high ${Q}^{2}$. Improved values are derived for the photocoupling amplitude for the ${S}_{11}$(1535) resonance. The new data greatly expand the ${Q}^{2}$ range covered, and an interpretation of all data with a consistent parametrization is provided.

Abstract: We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of K{sup +}{lambda} and K{sup +}{sigma}{sup 0} final states from a proton target using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) large-acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions {sigma}{sub T},{sigma}{sub L},{sigma}{sub TT}, and {sigma}{sub LT} were extracted from the {phi}- and {epsilon}-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first {sigma}{sub L}/{sigma}{sub T} separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. Abstract: New measurements of the spin structure functions of the proton and deuteron g1p(x,Q2) and g1d(x,Q2) in the nucleon resonance region are compared with extrapolations of target-mass-corrected next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD fits to higher energy data. Averaged over the entire resonance region (W 1.7 GeV2. This global duality appears to result from cancellations among the prominent local resonance regions: in particular strong sigma{3/2} contributions in the Delta(1232) region appear to be compensated by strong sigma{1/2} contributions in the resonance region centered on 1.5 GeV. These results are encouraging for the extension of NLO QCD fits to lower W and Q2 than have been used previously.

Abstract: The recoil proton polarization was measured in the {sup 2}H(e-vector,e{sup '}p-vector)n reaction in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The electron kinematics were centered on the quasielastic peak (x{sub Bj}{approx_equal}1) and included three values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q{sup 2}=0.43,1.00 and 1.61 (GeV/c){sup 2}. For Q{sup 2}=0.43 and 1.61 (GeV/c){sup 2}, the missing momentum, p{sub m}, was centered at zero, whereas for Q{sup 2}=1.00 (GeV/c){sup 2} two values of p{sub m} were chosen: 0 and 174 MeV/c. At low p{sub m}, the Q{sup 2} dependence of the longitudinal polarization, P{sub z}{sup '}, is not well described by a state-of-the-art calculation. Further, at higher p{sub m}, a 3.5{sigma} discrepancy was observed in the transverse polarization, P{sub x}{sup '}. Understanding the origin of these discrepancies is important to confidently extract the neutron electric form factor from the analogous {sup 2}H(e-vector,e{sup '}n-vector)p experiment.

Abstract: Inclusive electron scattering off the deuteron has been measured to extract the deuteron structure function F{sub 2} with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurement covers the entire resonance region from the quasielastic peak up to the invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W{approx_equal}2.7 GeV with four-momentum transfers Q{sup 2} from 0.4 to 6 (GeV/c){sup 2}. These data are complementary to previous measurements of the proton structure function F{sub 2} and cover a similar two-dimensional region of Q{sup 2} and Bjorken variable x. Determination of the deuteron F{sub 2} over a large x interval including the quasielastic peak as a function of Q{sup 2}, together with the other world data, permit a direct evaluation of the structure function moments for the first time. By fitting the Q{sup 2} evolution of these moments with an OPE-based twist expansion we have obtained a separation of the leading twist and higher twist terms. The observed Q{sup 2} behavior of the higher twist contribution suggests a partial cancelation of different higher twists entering into the expansion with opposite signs. This cancelation, found also in the proton moments, is a manifestation of the 'duality' phenomenon inmore » the F{sub 2} structure function.« less

Abstract: High-statistics cross sections for the reactions {gamma} + p {yields} K{sup +} + {Lambda} and {gamma} + p {yields} K{sup +} + {Sigma}{sup 0} have been measured using CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies W between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for -0.85 < cos {theta}{sub K{sup +}}{sup c.m.} < +0.95. In the K{sup +}{Lambda} channel we confirm a resonance-like structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles. The position and width of this structure change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is likely playing a role. The K{sup +} {Lambda} channel at forward angles and all energies is well described by a t-channel scaling characteristic of Regge exchange, while the same scaling applied to the K{sup +} {Sigma}{sup 0} channel is less successful. Several existing theoretical models are compared to the data, but none provide a good representation of the results.

Abstract: The ratios of inclusive electron scattering cross sections of {sup 4}He, {sup 12}C, and {sup 56}Fe to {sup 3}He have been measured at 1 1.4 GeV{sup 2}, the ratios exhibit two separate plateaus, at 1.5 2.25. This pattern is predicted by models that include 2- and 3-nucleon short-range correlations (SRC). Relative to A=3, the per-nucleon probabilities of 3-nucleon SRC are 2.3, 3.1, and 4.4 times larger for A=4, 12, and 56. This is the first measurement of 3-nucleon SRC probabilities in nuclei.

Abstract: The ep {yields} e'pi{sup +}n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV{sup 2} < Q{sup 2} < 0.65 GeV{sup 2} range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions {sigma}{sub TL}, {sigma}{sub TT} and the linear combination {sigma}{sub T} + {epsilon}{sigma}{sub L} were extracted by fitting the {phi}-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to the MAID and Sato-Lee models.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p -> eta-prime p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data indicate for the first time the coupling of the etaprime N channel to both the S_11(1535) and P_11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the eta N channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of j=3/2 resonances in the process., 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry A_UL for the exclusive electroproduction of high energy photons was measured for the first time in p(e,e'p\gamma). The data have been accumulated at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH_3 target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from the interference of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. The amplitude of the sin(phi) moment is 0.252 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.020(sys). Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions H and H-tilde., Comment: Modified text slightly, added references

Abstract: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} measures the interference between real and imaginary amplitudes in pion electroproduction and can be used to probe the coupling between resonant and nonresonant processes. We report new measurements of {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}} in the N(1440)(1/2){sup +} (Roper) resonance region at Q{sup 2}=0.40 and 0.65GeV{sup 2} for both the {pi}{sup 0}p and {pi}{sup +}n channels. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at a beam energy of 1.515 GeV. Complete angular distributions were obtained and are compared to recent phenomenological models. The {sigma}{sub LT{sup '}}({pi}{sup +}n) channel shows a large sensitivity to the Roper-resonance multipoles M{sub 1-} and S{sub 1-} and provides new constraints on models of resonance formation.

Abstract: The contribution of this paper is a novel framework for synthesizing nonphotorealistic animations from real video sequences. We demonstrate that, through automated mid-level analysis of the video sequence as a spatiotemporal volume - a block of frames with time as the third dimension - we are able to generate animations in a wide variety of artistic styles, exhibiting a uniquely high degree of temporal coherence. In addition to rotoscoping, matting, and novel temporal effects unique to our method, we demonstrate the extension of static nonphotorealistic rendering (NPR) styles to video, including painterly, sketchy, and cartoon shading. We demonstrate how this novel coherent shading framework may be combined with our earlier motion emphasis work to produce a comprehensive "video paintbox" capable of rendering complete cartoon-styled animations from video clips.

Abstract: Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction gamma + p --> p pi+ pi- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 GeV and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data are compared with the results of various phenomenological model calculations, and show that these models currently do not provide an adequate description for the behavior of this new observable., 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: The electromagnetic decays of the Sig0(1385) and Lambda(1520) hyperons were studied in photon-induced reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1116)gamma in the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the Sig0(1385) and a measurement of the Lambda(1520) radiative decay width. For the Sig0(1385) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we measured a partial width of 479+/-120(stat)+81-100(sys) keV, larger than all of the existing model predictions. For the Lambda(1520) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we obtained a partial width of 167+/-43(stat)+26-12(sys) keV.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+ pentaquarks., submitted to Phys. Rev. C

Abstract: The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons. Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic ranges, have been found to be in reasonable agreement with the data.

Abstract: Two-proton correlations at small relative momentum q were studied in the e A ( 3 H e , 4 H e , C , F e ) → e ′ p p X reaction at E 0 = 4.46 G e V using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The enhancement of the correlation function at small q was found to be in accordance with theoretical expectations. Sizes of the emission region were extracted, and proved to be dependent on A and on the proton momentum. The size of the two-proton emission region for He was measured in e A reactions for the first time.
