Neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the most sensitive probes for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. One of the isotopes under investigation is ^{136}Xe, which would double beta decay into ^{136}Ba. Detecting the single ^{136}Ba daughter provides a sort of ultimate tool in the discrimination against backgrounds. Previous work demonstrated the ability to perform single atom imaging of Ba atoms in a single-vacancy site of a solid xenon matrix. In this paper, the effort to identify signal from individual barium atoms is extended to Ba atoms in a hexa-vacancy site in the matrix and is achieved despite increased photobleaching in this site. Abrupt fluorescence turn-off of a single Ba atom is also observed. Significant recovery of fluorescence signal lost through photobleaching is demonstrated upon annealing of Ba deposits in the Xe ice. Following annealing, it is observed that Ba atoms in the hexa-vacancy site exhibit antibleaching while Ba atoms in the tetra-vacancy site exhibit bleaching. This may be evidence for a matrix site transfer upon laser excitation. Our findings offer a path of continued research toward tagging of Ba daughters in all significant sites in solid xenon.

Martian gullies are kilometer-scale, geologically young features with a source alcove, transportation channel, and depositional fan. On the walls of impact craters, these gullies typically incise into bedrock or surfaces modified by the latitude-dependent mantle (LDM; inferred as consisting of ice and admixed dust) and glaciation. To better understand the differences in the alcoves and fans of gullies formed in different substrates and infer the flow types that led to their formation, we have analyzed the morphology and morphometry of 167 gully systems in 29 craters distributed between 30 and 75∘ S. Specifically we measured length, width, gradient, area, relief, and relief ratio of the gully alcoves and fans; Melton ratio, relative concavity index, and perimeter; and form factor, elongation ratio, and circularity ratio of the gully alcoves. Our study reveals that gully alcoves formed in LDM/glacial deposits are more elongated than the gully alcoves formed in bedrock, and they possess a distinctive V-shaped cross section. We have found that the mean gradient of fans formed by gullies sourced in bedrock is steeper than the mean gradient of fans of gullies sourced in LDM/glacial deposits. These differences between gullies were found to be statistically significant and discriminant analysis has confirmed that alcove perimeter, alcove relief, and fan gradient are the most important variables for differentiating gullies according to their source substrates. The comparison between the Melton ratio, alcove length, and fan gradient of Martian and terrestrial gullies reveals that Martian gully systems were likely formed by terrestrial debris-flow-like processes. Present-day sublimation of CO2 ice on Mars may have provided the adequate flow fluidization for the formation of deposits akin to terrestrial debris-flow-like deposits.

Resilience could improve parental response to serving as schooling educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to determine whether schooling type (homeschool vs. public-school) and physical activity resulted in significantly different perceived resilience among 123 parents of school-aged youth. The main effect of schooling type, but not physical activity, on perceived parental resilience was significant. Homeschool parents perceived themselves as significantly more resilient than public-school parents. Public-school parents who did not meet physical activity recommendations perceived themselves as significantly less resilient than all other groups making physical activity particularly important for this demographic.

Abstract High-purity microfine mullite precursor powder of stoichiometric chemical composition, 3Al2O3.2SiO2, was synthesized through the sol-gel route using aluminum isopropoxide and tetraethyl orthosilicate. The derived mullite precursor powder was characterized by BET surface area, particle size distribution, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Phase analysis of the precursor powder and calcined samples at different temperatures was done by XRD. Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of mullite precursor was studied by TG-DTA in static air using heating rates of 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, and 15 K.min-1. Grain morphology was studied by SEM. The results showed that synthesized mullite precursor powder possessed homogeneity of Al and Si components, and the amorphous precursor powder was converted to monophasic mullite crystal when heat-treated at 970 °C. Based on Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger equations, the activation energy associated with the crystallization of mullite was determined to be 1189.8 and 1189.0 kJ.mol-1, respectively.

Abstract We describe the relationship between the morphology and rejection performance by the mixed-matrix membranes as a unique class of high water flux nanofiltration membranes comprising polyethersulfone/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PES/f-MWCNTs). These membranes contain aligned MWCNTs uniformly distributed inside a PES matrix prepared using conventional phase-inversion technique. The small-angle neutron scattering analysis confirmed the high porosity and uniformity among of the pores of CNTs in the membranes. The frictionless water transport from vertically oriented f-MWCNTs were verified to facilitate remarkable enhancement in the water flux through the membranes. The water transportation speed, as well as rejection, of selected heavy metals increases nearly about 3 times and 2–3.5 times, respectively, than the pristine PES membrane, depending upon CNTs loading. Low working pressure and good retention properties make these membranes to be an ideal for the application of highly efficient filtration units.

Two new mechanisms active in rotating nuclei located in the vicinity of neutron drip line have been discovered. Strong Coriolis interaction acting on high-j orbitals transforms particle-unbound (resonance) nucleonic configurations into particle-bound ones with increasing angular momentum. The point of the transition manifests the birth of particle-bound rotational bands. Alternative possibility of the transition from particle-bound to resonance rotational band (the death of particle-bound rotational bands) with increasing spin also exists but it is less frequent in the calculations. The birth of particle-bound rotational bands provides a mechanism for the extension of nuclear landscape to neutron numbers which are larger than those of the neutron drip line in non-rotating nuclei.

The Machida’s snake eel, Ophichthus machidai McCosker, Ide et Endo, 2012, is reported for the first time from the coasts of Bay of Bengal, India. Four specimens (396–457 mm total length) were collected from the Shankarpur fishing harbour, Digha, West Bengal. Principal morphological characters were determined and the specimen was illustrated and described. The species was previously restricted to the northern Pacific Ocean and now is reported for the first time from the Indian coast of the Indian Ocean.

Understanding the global carbon (C) cycle is of crucial importance to map current and future climate dynamics relative to global environmental change. A full characterization of C cycling requires detailed information on spatiotemporal patterns of surface–atmosphere fluxes. However, relevant C cycle observations are highly variable in their coverage and reporting standards. Especially problematic is the lack of integration of the carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange of the ocean, inland freshwaters and the land surface with the atmosphere. Here we adopt a data-driven approach to synthesize a wide range of observation-based spatially explicit surface–atmosphere CO2 fluxes from 2001 to 2010, to identify the state of today's observational opportunities and data limitations. The considered fluxes include net exchange of open oceans, continental shelves, estuaries, rivers, and lakes, as well as CO2 fluxes related to net ecosystem productivity, fire emissions, loss of tropical aboveground C, harvested wood and crops, as well as fossil fuel and cement emissions. Spatially explicit CO2 fluxes are obtained through geostatistical and/or remote-sensing-based upscaling, thereby minimizing biophysical or biogeochemical assumptions encoded in process-based models. We estimate a bottom-up net C exchange (NCE) between the surface (land, ocean, and coastal areas) and the atmosphere. Though we provide also global estimates, the primary goal of this study is to identify key uncertainties and observational shortcomings that need to be prioritized in the expansion of in situ observatories. Uncertainties for NCE and its components are derived using resampling. In many regions, our NCE estimates agree well with independent estimates from other sources such as process-based models and atmospheric inversions. This holds for Europe (mean ± 1 SD: 0.8 ± 0.1 PgC yr−1, positive numbers are sources to the atmosphere), Russia (0.1 ± 0.4 PgC yr−1), East Asia (1.6 ± 0.3 PgC yr−1), South Asia (0.3 ± 0.1 PgC yr−1), Australia (0.2 ± 0.3 PgC yr−1), and most of the Ocean regions. Our NCE estimates give a likely too large CO2 sink in tropical areas such as the Amazon, Congo, and Indonesia. Overall, and because of the overestimated CO2 uptake in tropical lands, our global bottom-up NCE amounts to a net sink of −5.4 ± 2.0 PgC yr−1. By contrast, the accurately measured mean atmospheric growth rate of CO2 over 2001–2010 indicates that the true value of NCE is a net CO2 source of 4.3 ± 0.1 PgC yr−1. This mismatch of nearly 10 PgC yr−1 highlights observational gaps and limitations of data-driven models in tropical lands, but also in North America. Our uncertainty assessment provides the basis for setting priority regions where to increase carbon observations in the future. High on the priority list are tropical land regions, which suffer from a lack of in situ observations. Second, extensive pCO2 data are missing in the Southern Ocean. Third, we lack observations that could enable seasonal estimates of shelf, estuary, and inland water–atmosphere C exchange. Our consistent derivation of data uncertainties could serve as prior knowledge in multicriteria optimization such as the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (CCDAS) and atmospheric inversions, without over- or under-stating bottom-up data credibility. In the future, NCE estimates of carbon sinks could be aggregated at national scale to compare with the official national inventories of CO2 fluxes in the land use, land use change, and forestry sector, upon which future emission reductions are proposed.

Two-color X-ray pulses with controlled time delay allow exciting one site of a molecule and then probing a different site of the same molecule with femtosecond resolution. Here, the authors use this hetero-site pump-probe technique to study charge redistribution and dissociation of the xenon difluoride molecule.

We present the design of an electron velocity map imaging (VMI) spectrometer where the ionizing laser source propagates along the symmetry axis of the spectrometer. The co-axial geometry is useful in a variety of experiments, because it provides a unique 2-dimensional projection of the 3-dimensional electron momentum distribution. Initial simulations show that this co-axial VMI can work with both high energy (more than 100 eV) and low energy (tens of eV) electrons. We demonstrate the performance of this co-axial VMI spectrometer at the Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray Free Electron Laser facility.

A little known species of snake eel, Ophichthus lithinus (Jordan et Richardson, 1908), is reported for the first time from the east coast of India, Bay of Bengal based on two specimens 632 and 720 mm in total length, collected respectively at Digha, West Bengal and Kalpakam, Tamil Nadu, India. This is the first attempt to provide a detailed description of the species from the Indian Ocean. The presently reported findings constitute an extension of the known distributional range of this species from the Western Pacific to the eastern coast of India.

Growth chamber experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of sesame to PRE and POST applications of soil residual herbicides. PRE applications of acetochlor and S-metolachlor at 1.26 and 1.43 kg ai·ha−1 showed little or no sesame injury (0 to 1%) 4 wks after herbicide treatments (WAT). POST treatments of acetochlor and trifluralin made 3 wks after planting (WAP) resulted in greater sesame injury (40%) compared to applications at bloom (18%). Field studies were conducted in Texas and Oklahoma during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons to determine sesame response to clethodim, diuron, fluometuron, ethalfluralin, quizalofop-P, pendimethalin, pyroxasulfone, trifluralin, and trifloxysulfuron-sodium applied 2, 3, or 4 weeks after planting (WAP). Late-season sesame injury with the dinitroaniline herbicides consisted of a proliferation of primary branching at the upper nodes of the sesame plant (in the shape/form of a broom). Ethalfluralin and trifluralin caused more “brooming” effect than pendimethalin. Some yield reductions were noted with the dinitroaniline herbicides. Trifloxysulfuron-sodium caused the greatest injury (up to 97%) and resulted in yield reductions from the untreated check. Early-season diuron injury (leaf chlorosis and necrosis) decreased as application timing was delayed, and late-season injury was virtually nonexistent with only slight chlorosis (

This article reviews characteristics of effective silent reading fluency instruction and practice. Next, the authors make the case for four components of effective silent reading fluency practice routines. Finally, the authors describe two evidece-based silent reading fluency routines – Scaffolded Silent Reading (ScSR) and R5. Evidence of efficacy along with richly described and illustrated examples provide readers with all the necessary information to implement these effective silent reading fluency routines in elementary classrooms.

This paper reports a finding of Parapercis ommatura Jordan et Snyder, 1902 from the Indian Ocean on the basis of detailed examination of 21 specimens collected from the West Bengal coast, on the northern part of Indian east coast. This species has previously been reported only from northwest Pacific regions. Detailed morphometric and meristic data for this species are provided.

We investigate the influence of the built-in voltage on the performance of organic bulk heterojuction solar cells that are based on a p-i-n structure. Electrical doping in the hole and the electron transport layer allows to tune their work function and hence to adjust the built-in voltage: Changing the doping concentration from 0.5 to 32 wt% induces a shift of the work function towards the transport levels and increases the built-in voltage. To determine the built-in voltage, we use electroabsorption spectroscopy which is based on an evaluation of the spectra caused by a change in absorption due to an electric field (Stark effect). For a model system with a bulk heterojunction of BF-DPB and C60, we show that higher doping concentrations in both the electron and the hole transport layer increase the built-in voltage, leading to an enhanced short circuit current and solar cell performance.

This manuscript describes the need elementary teachers have to analyze beginning and complex texts for teaching affordances and obstacles when teaching reading foundational skills and core ELA standards. A Guide to Analyze Texts for Elementary Students (GATES) is provided and described. Two teacher cases discuss how real teachers have used the GATES to analyze texts for instructional purposes.

The education model in which a single teacher instructs a single classroom of students has been remarkably persistent, but teacher shortages, low morale, and poor teacher retention are signs that it's not working well for teachers. Ray Reutzel and Parker Fawson describe how Utah's Center for the School of the Future is seeking to redesign the teacher workforce to improve outcomes for both teachers and students without increasing costs. Their integrated workforce model brings students together in a pod led by a master teacher, classroom teachers, teacher interns, aides, and tutors. Students receive more individualized support, and prospective teachers have more opportunities to practice their skills before receiving a license and becoming a lead teacher. The model also includes pathways for paraprofessionals to complete education coursework while they continue to earn an income.

This research explores upper elementary students' motivation to read fiction and nonfiction. Using expectancy-value theory, the researchers developed separate surveys to measure motivation to read fiction and nonfiction. Researchers administered surveys to 1,104 upper elementary students (grades 3-6) in multiple locations across the United States and found the instruments to be psychometrically sound. Results corroborate previous research demonstrating students' declining motivation to read across grade levels; in particular, students' value for reading was declining. This research also corroborates previous research findings that girls are more motivated than boys to read fiction. Researchers found insignificant gender differences between girls' and boys' motivations to read nonfiction, indicating a need to further investigate students' motivation to read nonfiction. Implications for classroom application of survey results and the need to enhance students' value for reading are discussed.
