Abstract

The Atlantic sea scallop supports one of the most lucrative fisheries on the Northeast U.S. shelf. Understanding the interannual variability of sea scallop size structure and associated drivers is critically important for projecting the response of population dynamics to climate change and designing coherent fishery management strategies. In this study, we constructed time series of sea scallop size structures in three rotationally closed areas in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) and decomposed their total variances using the variance partitioning method. The results suggested that the interannual variances in sea scallop size structures were associated more with thermal stress in regions shallower than 60 m but more with fishing mortality in regions deeper than 60 m. The percentages of small (large) size groups increased (decreased) with elevated thermal stress and fishing pressure. We adopted a scope for growth model to build a mechanistic link between temperature and sea scallop size. Model results suggested a gradual decrease in maximum shell height and habitat contraction under warming. This study quantified the relative contributions of thermal stress and fishing mortality to the variance of scallop size structure and discussed the need for adaptive management plans to mitigate potential socioeconomic impacts caused by size structure changes.

Abstract

We demonstrate the hohlraum radiation temperature and symmetry required for ignition-scale inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions. Cryogenic gas-filled hohlraums with 2.2 mm-diameter capsules are heated with unprecedented laser energies of 1.2 MJ delivered by 192 ultraviolet laser beams on the National Ignition Facility. Laser backscatter measurements show that these hohlraums absorb 87% to 91% of the incident laser power resulting in peak radiation temperatures of T(RAD)=300 eV and a symmetric implosion to a 100 μm diameter hot core.

6. Sedimentation Rates and Sediment Core Profiles of 238U and 232Th Decay Chain Radionuclides in a Lake Affected by Uranium Mining and Milling

Abstract

Radionuclide concentration profiles in sediment cores from three deep basins of Quirke Lake, Ontario, showed enrichment in the surficial layers related to the period of uranium mining in the watershed, based on sedimentation rates determined from a milling-related pH decline indicated by fossil diatoms. Recent sedimentation rates are 96 ± 7 to 185 ± 14 g∙m−2∙yr−1. 210Pb profiles could not be used to determine sedimentation rates due to loadings of 226Ra and 210Ph from mining and milling activities. Profiles of 238U and 232Th decay chain radionuclides showed an enrichment of 1–3 orders of magnitude in surficial sediments relative to background in deeper sediments. Radionudide levels in surficial sediments exceeded those reported in lake sediments in uncontaminated systems and, for some radionuclides, approached or equalled levels in sediments contaminated with uranium and radium refining residues. Radionudide activity ratios in the surficial layers of the Quirke Lake cores and in downstream sediments demonstrated the relative mobilities of the elements in the watershed. Net sediment loading rates for radionuclides in the three basins were 130–230 mg∙m−2∙yr−1 for U, 340–4000 Bq∙m−2∙yr−1 for other members of the 238U decay chain, and 210–530 Bq∙m−2∙yr−1 for 232Th and 228Th.

Abstract

Chironomus spp. larvae collected from sediments in the harbour at Port Hope, Ontario, had a greater incidence of mouth part deformities in the more heavily polluted inner harbour area (83%, 33 of 40 individuals) than in the outer harbour (14%, 1 of 7 individuals). Port Hope Harbour, the site of radium and uranium refining operations since 1933, is contaminated by 238 U and (to a lesser extent) 232 Th decay chain radionuclides and several trace metals. This difference suggests that deformities are related to the areal extent of contamination. An estimated dose rate of 1 mGy/day in chironomids suggests that radiation may be a significant factor in the induction of deformities; however, heavy metals and elevated water temperatures may also be involved.

Abstract

Purpose: To scrutinize the validity of a novel angle (maxilla-mandible-nasion angle, MMN) as objective proof of midfacial hypoplasia in trisomy 21 fetuses. Materials and Methods: Volume data sets of 2nd trimester fetuses were reviewed in this retrospective study. After achievement of the correct midsagittal position, the fetal profile line (FP line) and the mandibulo-maxillary line (MML) were applied and the resulting angle was calculated. Additionally, the prefrontal space ratio (PFSR) was assessed. Both measurements were obtained from 401 euploid fetuses and 42 fetuses with trisomy 21. Values for MMN and PFSR
