1. Tunable diode laser study of pressure broadening of Rb D1 lines in the presence of He buffer gas

Abstract

We report on a study of the broadening of the spectral profiles of Rb D1 resonance lines in the presence of 3–10 amg of 4 He buffer gas. We observe the width of the line shape to depend linearly on the buffer gas density, the constant of proportionality being Γ=18.6±0.2 GHz amg−1. The precision of this measurement is similar to that achieved by previous experiments. However, the novelty of our approach centers on our implementation of a new tunable diode laser, which is substantially cheaper and easier to operate than lasers used in previous studies. Our technique thus provides a reliable and inexpensive method for measuring the density at the 1% level of polarized targets with sealed glass cells used in nuclear physics experiments.

Abstract

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A_T′ in ^3He(e,e′) quasielastic scattering in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory with high precision for Q^2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)^2. The neutron magnetic form factor GMn was extracted based on Faddeev calculations for Q^2 = 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)^2 with an experimental uncertainty of less than 2%.

Abstract

Using a silicon-microstrip detector array to identify secondary vertices, we have observed {ital b}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} decays in 800 GeV/{ital c} proton-gold interactions. The doubly differential cross section for {ital J}/{psi} mesons originating from {ital b}-quark decays, assuming linear dependence on nucleon number, is {ital d}{sup 2}{sigma}/{ital dx}{sub {ital Fdp}}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}}=107{plus_minus}28{plus_minus}19/nucleon at {ital x}{sub {ital F}}=0.05 and {ital p}{sub {ital T}}=1GeV/{ital c}. This measurement is compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The integrated {ital b}-quark production cross section, obtained by extrapolation over all {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sub {ital T}}, is {sigma}({ital pN}{r_arrow}{ital bb}{ovr bar}+{ital X})=5.7{plus_minus}1.5{plus_minus}1.3 nb/nucleon.

Abstract

The differential cross sections do/dxF for J/G produced inclusively in 800 GeV/c p-Cn and pBe collisions have been measured in the kinematic range 0.30 5 IF < 0.95 through the decay mode J/G + p+p-. They are compared with the predictions of the semilocal duality model for several sets of parton density functions. No evidence for a suggested intrinsic charm contribution to the cross section is observed. The ratio of the differential cross sections for Cu and Be targets confirms the suppression of J/$ production in heavy nuclei at large ZF.

A Silicon Microstrip Spectrometer has been installed and successfully operated in experiment E789 at Fermilab. The main physics goal of the experiment is to search for charged particle decays of B and D Mesons. Damage effects due to ionizing radiation exposure to the silicon during the experiment are reported.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$) for Z boson production by ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider which utilized a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization was (22.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)%. Using a sample of 10 224 Z decays, we measure ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$ to be 0.100\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.044(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.004(syst), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathit{W}}^{\mathit{e}\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$=0.2378 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0056(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0005(syst).

Abstract

We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. Abstract

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A{sub T{sup '}} in the quasielastic {sup 3}He-vector(e-vector,e{sup '}) process with high precision at Q{sup 2} values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The neutron magnetic form factor G{sub M}{sup n} was extracted at Q{sup 2} values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c){sup 2} using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of {sup 3}He-vector(e-vector,e{sup '}). We also extracted the neutron magnetic form factor G{sub M}{sup n} at Q{sup 2} values of 0.3 to 0.6 (GeV/c){sup 2} based on plane wave impulse approximation calculations.

Abstract

The generalized forward spin polarizabilities $\gamma_0$ and $\delta_{LT}$ of the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a $Q^2$ range from 0.1 to 0.9 GeV$^2$. Since $\gamma_0$ is sensitive to nucleon resonances and $\delta_{LT}$ is insensitive to the $\Delta$ resonance, it is expected that the pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on $\delta_{LT}$ show significant disagreement with Chiral Perturbation Theory calculations, while the data for $\gamma_0$ at low $Q^2$ are in good agreement with a next-to-lead order Relativistic Baryon Chiral Perturbation theory calculation. Abstract

The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A high precision measurement of the transverse spin-dependent asymmetry A_T' in ^3He(e,e') quasielastic scattering was performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab at values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q^2, between 0.1 and 0.6 (GeV/c)^2. A_(T') is sensitive to the neutron magnetic form factor, G_M^n . Values of G_M^n at Q^2 = 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)^2, extracted using Faddeev calculations, were reported previously. Here, we report the extraction of G_M^n for the remaining Q^2 values in the range from 0.3 to 0.6 (GeV/c)^2 using a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation. The results are in good agreement with recent precision data from experiments using a deuterium target.

Abstract

We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized ^3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5°. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference σ_(1/2)-σ_(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 of 0.1–0.9 GeV^2.

Abstract

Results of a search for the three neutral charm decays, D0 -> mu e, D0 -> mu mu, and D0 -> e e, are presented. This study was based on data collected in Experiment 789 at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory using 800 GeV/c proton-Au and proton-Be interactions. No evidence is found for any of the decays. Upper limits on the branching ratios, at the 90% confidence level, are obtained., 28 pages, 18 figures. Submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

With a data sample containing 1.1{times}10{sup 5} {ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} decays reconstructed with 16 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} rms mass resolution, we have measured the differential cross sections versus Feynman-{ital x}, rapidity, and {ital p}{sub {ital T}} for the production of {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}{prime} in 800 GeV/{ital c} {ital p}-Au collisions. Our results are compared with leading-order QCD predictions and with previous measurements. While the shapes of the cross sections are in qualitative agreement with QCD predictions, the magnitudes disagree by factors of 7 ({ital J}/{psi}) and 25 ({psi}{prime}). Assuming an appropriate form for the differential cross sections in regions not measured we derive a total {ital J}/{psi} production cross section {sigma}({ital p}+{ital N}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}+{ital X})=442{plus_minus}2{plus_minus}88 nb/nucleon and a (model-dependent) total {psi}{prime} cross secton {sigma}({ital p}+{ital N}{r_arrow}{psi}{prime}+{ital X})=75{plus_minus}5{plus_minus}22 nb/nucleon. For {ital J}/{psi} produced at central rapidity, {ital d}{sigma}({ital p}+{ital N}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}+{ital X})/{ital dy}{vert_bar}{sub {ital y}=0}=230{plus_minus}5{plus_minus}46 nb/nucleon.

Abstract

The nuclear dependence for 800 GeV/[ital c] proton production of neutron [ital D] mesons has been measured near [ital x][sub [ital F]]=0 in Experiment 789 at Fermilab. [ital D] mesons from beryllium and gold targets were detected with a pair spectrometer and a silicon vertex detector via their decay [ital D][r arrow][ital K][pi]. No nuclear dependence is found, with a measured [alpha]=1.02[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.02. The measured differential cross section, [ital d][sigma]/[ital dx][sub [ital F]], for neutral-[ital D]-meson production at [l angle][ital x][sub [ital F]][r angle]=0.031 is 58[plus minus]3[plus minus]7 [mu]b/nucleon. The integrated cross section obtained by extrapolation of the measured cross section to all [ital x][sub [ital F]] is 17.7[plus minus]0.9[plus minus]3.4 [mu]b/nucleon and is consistent with previous measurements.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) in Z-boson production observed at the SLAC Linear Collider. In 1992 the SLD detector recorded 10 224 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons with an unpolarized positron beam at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV. The average electron beam polarization during the run was (22.4 ± 0.6)%. We measure ALR to be 0.100 ± 0.0440 (stat.) ±0.004 (syst.), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be $\sin^2\theta_W^{\rm {eff}} = 0.2378\pm 0.0056\, ({\rm stat.})\pm 0.0005\, ({\rm syst.})$.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the 3He over -->(e over -->,e')X reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at a four-momentum transfer 0.1< or =Q2< or =0.9 GeV2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt-Cottingham and extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rules for the first time. The data are also compared to an impulse approximation calculation and an exact three-body Faddeev calculation in the quasielastic region.

Abstract

The generalized forward spin polarizabilities gamma(0) and delta(LT) of the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a Q2 range from 0.1 to 0.9 GeV2. Since gamma(0) is sensitive to nucleon resonances and delta(LT) is insensitive to the Delta resonance, it is expected that the pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on delta(LT) show significant disagreement with chiral perturbation theory calculations, while the data for gamma(0) at low Q2 are in good agreement with a next-to-leading-order relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation. The data show good agreement with the phenomenological MAID model.

Abstract

We have measured the spin structure functions g(1) and g(2) of 3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized 3He target at a 15.5 degrees scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q2 evolution of Gamma(1)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(1)(x,Q2)dx, Gamma(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(2)(x,Q2)dx, and d(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)x(2)[2g(1)(x,Q2)+3g(2)(x,Q2)]dx for the neutron in the range 0.1< or =Q2< or =0.9 GeV2 with good precision. Gamma(1)(Q2) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q2. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d(2) is nonzero over the measured range.

Abstract

We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5 degrees. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference sigma(1/2)-sigma(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q2 of 0.1-0.9 GeV2.

Abstract

We present the first precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e,e') at Q2 values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)2. The agreement between the data and nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations which include both final-state interactions and meson-exchange current effects is very good at Q2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)2, while a small discrepancy at Q2 = 0.2 (GeV/c)2 is observed.

Abstract

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A(T') in 3He(e,e(')) quasielastic scattering in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory with high precision for Q2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)(2). The neutron magnetic form factor G(n)(M) was extracted based on Faddeev calculations for Q2 = 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)(2) with an experimental uncertainty of less than 2%.
