Abstract: We report on a direct search in NOMAD for a new 33.9 MeV/c^2 neutral particle (X) produced in pion decay in flight, pi-->mu_X followed by the decay X -->nu e^+e^-. Both decays are postulated to occur to explain the time anomaly observed by the KARMEN experiment. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996?1998 runs with 4.1×10^19 protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. The search is sensitive to a pion branching ratio BR(pi-->muX >3.7×10^-15, significantly smaller than previous experimental limits.

Abstract: Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes sin^2(2theta) nu_tau oscillation hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)

Abstract: Backward proton and $\pi^-$ production has been studied in $\nu_{\mu}CC$ interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. The backward proton data have been compared with the predictions of the reinteraction and the short range correlation models.

Abstract: The Λ polarization in νμ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Λ 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W -boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: Px(xF 0)=−0.09±0.06(stat)±0.03(sys) . These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization (in the direction orthogonal to the Λ production plane) has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: Py=−0.22±0.03(stat)±0.01(sys) . The dependence of the absolute value of Py on the Λ transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the results from unpolarized hadron–hadron experiments.

Abstract: The $\Lambda$ polarization in $\nu_\mu$ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed $\Lambda$'s) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. Abstract: In the context of a two-flavour approximation we reinterpret the published NOMAD limit on ν μ → ν τ oscillations in terms of ν e → ν τ oscillations. At 90% C.L. we obtain sin 2 2θ eτ 5.2×10 −2 for large Δm 2 , while for sin 2 2 θ eτ =1 the confidence region includes Δm 2 2 / c 4 .

Abstract: With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Delta m^2$, the confidence region includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\ \ 1.2\times10^{-3}$ (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}=1$, the confidence region includes $\Delta m^2 1.2$ eV$^2$/$c^4$.

Abstract: By focusing on the notion of electronic document, we differentiate two evolutions which are useful to distinct titles: on the one hand are the documents, which have value of reference. Its administrator will take care to preserve its integrity and its context of production which is strongly significant. On the other hand are resources, evolutionary elements by nature, which the user must be able to appropriate and who must thus be placed at the disposal so that the production is erased, to focus on a logic of exploitation and service.

Abstract: NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of ντ charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, a limit of sin 2 2θ μτ 4.2×10 −3 is obtained for large Δm2 at the 90% confidence level.

12. Three-dimensional density profiles of sputtered atoms and ions in a direct current glow discharge: experimental study and comparison with calculations

Abstract: Three-dimensional density profiles of the sputtered tantalum atoms and ions have been measured in a direct current glow discharge with flat cathode, by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The primary excitation lines of the tantalum atoms and ions are taken to be the 269.131 nm and the 270.280 nm lines, respectively, whereas the 358.42 nm line and the 304.2 nm line are used as their fluorescence lines, respectively. Moreover, atomic absorption measurements with a hollow cathode lamp were also performed to check the fluorescence results for the atoms. The 271.467 nm line was selected for this purpose. The discharge was studied for a range of voltages, pressures and currents (i.e. 700–1200 V, 0.7–1.6 torr, 1.2–3.9 mA). The atom density profile reaches a maximum at about 3 mm from the cathode, whereas the ion density profile was found to be at its maximum at about 6 mm from the cathode. The experimental data have been compared with results of mathematical simulations for the same geometry; in general, satisfactory agreement is reached. Experimental observations and modeling calculations allow better insight into the complex interactions occurring in a glow discharge.

Abstract: We present our new measurement of the cross-section for charm dimuon production in neutrino iron interactions based upon the full statistics collected by the NOMAD experiment. After background subtraction we observe 15 344 charm dimuon events, providing the largest sample currently available. The analysis exploits the large inclusive charged current sample - about 9 x 10(6) events after all analysis cuts - and the high resolution NOMAD detector to constrain the total systematic uncertainty on the ratio of charm dimuon to inclusive Charged Current (CC) cross-sections to similar to 2%. We also perform a fit to the NOMAD data to extract the charm production parameters and the strange quark sea content of the nucleon within the NLO QCD approximation. We obtain a value of m(c)(m(c)) = 1.159 +/- 0.075 GeV/c(2) for the running mass of the charm quark in the (MS) over bar scheme and a strange quark sea suppression factor of kappa(s) = 0.591 +/- 0.019 at Q(2) = 20 GeV2/c(2)., We extend our grateful appreciations to the CERN SPS staff for the magnificent performance of the neutrino beam. Abstract: We present a search for neutrino induced events containing a single, exclusive photon using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS where the average energy of the neutrino flux is ≃25 GeV. The search is motivated by an excess of electron-like events in the 200-475 MeV energy region as reported by the MiniBooNE experiment. In NOMAD, photons are identified via their conversion to e + e - in an active target embedded in a magnetic field. The background to the single photon signal is dominated by the asymmetric decay of neutral pions produced either in a coherent neutrino-nucleus interaction, or in a neutrino-nucleon neutral current deep inelastic scattering, or in an interaction occurring outside the fiducial volume. All three backgrounds are determined in situ using control data samples prior to opening the 'signal-box'. In the signal region, we observe 155 events with a predicted background of 129.2±8.5±3.3. We interpret this as null evidence for excess of single photon events, and set a limit. Assuming that the hypothetical single photon has a momentum distribution similar to that of a photon from the coherent π 0 decay, the measurement yields an upper limit on single photon events, Physics Letters B, 706 (4-5), ISSN:0370-2693, ISSN:0031-9163, ISSN:1873-2445

Abstract: The use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of trace elements in Al2O3 powders is reported. Special interest is given to a preconcentration of the trace elements by on-line coupling of chromatography to ICP-MS. This is based on the complexation of Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ga, Mn, Ni, V and Zn with hexamethylene-dithiocarbamate (HMDC), their preconcentration on a C18 RP column by reversed phase liquid chromatography and their elution with CH3OH-H2O mixtures. A direct coupling of the HPLC system to the ICP-MS has been realized by high pressure pneumatic nebulization using desolvation. With the Chromatographie method developed, removal of the AI by at least 99% was achieved. For the trace elements V, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu and Ga, high and reproducible recoveries (ranging from 96–99%) were reached. The method developed has been shown to considerably enhance the power of detection as compared with direct procedures, namely down to 0.02–0.16 ( μg g for V and Fe, respectively. The possibilities of the method are shown by the determinations of V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn and Ga at the μg/g level in A12O3 powders. The accuracy of the method at the 0.06 to 9.0 μg g level for Co and Fe, respectively, is demonstrated by a comparison with results of independent methods from the literature.

16. Noise power spectra of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using a cooled spray chamber

Abstract: The influence of the spray chamber temperature and the related aerosol water loading on ArO+ as typical spectral interference in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is studied. Therefore, the noise power spectra for the ArO+ have been measured by use of fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis. A Meinhard nebulizer and a GMK nebulizer were used in connection with a cooled spray chamber at a temperature of 5–25°C. It could be found that the relative standard deviation of the analyte signal in ICP-MS was improved by cooling the spray chamber. The noise power spectra showed that especially the white noise goes down when the spray chamber is cooled. The overall white noise with the GMK nebulizer is shown to be higher in the case of an Al2O3 slurry than in the case of an AlCl3 solution, containing both 400 μg ml Al. The pumping pulse rates are clearly visible in the noise amplitude spectra, but their amplitudes decrease at the presence of an impactor bead m the GMK nebulizer. Shifts of the noise band around 355 Hz were shown to occur as a result of the power level and the outer gas flow as well.

Abstract: The use of plasma atomic spectrometric methods for the analysis of high-purity refractory powders of Al2O3, SiC and ZrO2 used in the production of advanced ceramics is discussed. Special reference is given to the use of combined procedures including sample decomposition and in the case of ZrO2 to matrix removal as well as to the slurry technique as a direct method in atomic spectrometry with inductively coupled plasmas (ICP). Both the possibilities, limitations and analytical use of the slurry technique are discussed and shown to be related to the particle size of the powder; this should be below the 5–10 μm level. The use of a Simplex method for the optimization of the slurry technique towards obtaining both the highest power of detection and calibration using solutions will be treated for the case of SiC. A critical evaluation of the use of ICP atomic emission and of ICP mass spectrometry is presented.

Abstract: We report measurements of the behaviour of silicon diodes when exposed to integrated neutron doses of up to 5 × 10 13 neutron/cm 2 . The measurements have been made at diode temperatures between room temperature and −20°C. From measurements of the diode leakage current and depletion voltage, and consequent evaluations of the effective impurity concentration, the temperature dependence of these quantities is discussed in terms of the annealing behaviour of the diodes. Comments are made on the suitability of silicon as a detector medium for particle physics experiments at future accelerators.

20. Determination of boron in biological tissues by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES)

Abstract: The application of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to the determination of boron was studied with regard to the optimization of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a method used in cancer radiotherapy. In order to enable trace determinations of B in tissue down to the sub μg/g-level (as this application requires), the different parameters of ICP-OES (gas flow, power, observation height) were optimized towards highest power of detection. Two different nebulizers (Babington and Meinhard nebulizer) as well as ICPs with argon or nitrogen as outer gases were used. The optimization was carried out with the aid of a modified simplex. The lowest detection limit for B (25 ng/ml) is obtained in the case of a Babington nebulizer and with an ICP using Ar as outer gas as well as a forward power of 1.3 kW (plate voltage at the r.f. generator: 2.75 kV). Therefore, the nebulizer gas flow had to be set at 1.1 l/min (at 4.5 bar) and an intermediate gas flow of 5 l/min in the case of a Greenfield-type torch was required. After optimization the natural concentration of B in biological tissues (0.1–0.3 μg/g) could be determined after decomposition of 1–1.5 g of the sample with 5 ml HNO3 (63%) at high temperature and pressure during 2 h in closed PTFE vessels. Results obtained with spiked liver standards were precise (RSD 5%–8%) and accurate in a concentration range of 5 μg/g to 100 μg/g. The method developed could be satisfactorily used for the analysis of tissue samples of mice tumors. Furthermore, the uptake and metabolization of boron and its derivatives could be well monitored at the 1–5 μg/g level.

Abstract: A study of prompt neutrino events from 400 GeV protons on a beam-dump is presented. The ratio of electron- to muon-neutrino rates is 0.86±0.14, in agreement withe−μ universality. The anti-neutrino to neutrino flux ratio is $$\bar v_\mu /v_\mu = 0.81 \pm 0.19$$ . The absolute rates and distributions observed are shown to be in quantitative agreement with the known properties of charmedquark production in hadron collisions.

Abstract: Local recurrences of carcinomas of the breast and genitals are a severe psychic and physical strain on the patients. Continuous confrontation with an often visible and generally painful tumour manifestation is an indication for palliative treatment, if other oncological therapies can no longer be employed. In these cases, the possibility of laser use represents a new therapeutic approach. In a pilot study at the University of Heidelberg, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a palliative laser therapy was performed on 45 patients with locally recurrent carcinomas of the breast (n = 29) and genitals (n = 16). Carbon dioxide and Nd:YAG lasers were utilized for tumour resection, vaporisation and coagulation. This new concept, the combined application of both wavelengths has been proved to be most efficient.

Abstract: We present a study of exclusive neutral pion production in neutrino-nucleus Neutral Current interactions using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS. The data correspond to $1.44 \times 10^6$ muon-neutrino Charged Current interactions in the energy range $2.5 \leq E_{\nu} \leq 300$ GeV. Neutrino events with only one visible $\pi^0$ in the final state are expected to result from two Neutral Current processes: coherent $\pi^0$ production, {\boldmath $\nu + {\cal A} \to \nu + {\cal A} + \pi^0$} and single $\pi^0$ production in neutrino-nucleon scattering. The signature of coherent $\pi^0$ production is an emergent $\pi^0$ almost collinear with the incident neutrino while $\pi^0$'s produced in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering have larger transverse momenta. In this analysis all relevant backgrounds to the coherent $\pi^0$ production signal are measured using data themselves. Having determined the backgrounds, and using the Rein-Sehgal model for the coherent $\pi^0$ production to compute the detection efficiency, we obtain {\boldmath $4630 \pm 522 (stat) \pm 426 (syst)$} corrected coherent-$\pi^0$ events with $E_{\pi^0} \geq 0.5$ GeV. We measure {\boldmath $\sigma (\nu {\cal A} \to \nu {\cal A} \pi^0) = [ 72.6 \pm 8.1(stat) \pm 6.9(syst) ] \times 10^{-40} cm^2/nucleus$}. Abstract: We have studied the muon neutrino and antineutrino quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering reactions ($\nu_\mu n\to \mu^- p$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu p\to \mu^+ n$) using a set of experimental data collected by the NOMAD collaboration. We have performed measurements of the cross-section of these processes on a nuclear target (mainly Carbon) normalizing it to the total $\nu_\mu$ ($\bar{\nu}_\mu$) charged current cross-section. The results for the flux averaged QEL cross-sections in the (anti)neutrino energy interval 3-100 GeV are $\sigma^{qel}_{\nu_\mu} = (0.92 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ and $\sigma{qel}_{\bar{\nu}_\mu} = (0.81 \pm 0.05 (stat) \pm 0.08 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ for neutrino and antineutrino, respectively. The axial mass parameter $M_A$ was extracted from the measured quasi-elastic neutrino cross-section. The corresponding result is $M_A = 1.05 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst) GeV$. It is consistent with the axial mass values recalculated from the antineutrino cross-section and extracted from the pure $Q^2$ shape analysis of the high purity sample of $\nu_\mu$ quasi-elastic 2-track events, but has smaller systematic error and should be quoted as the main result of this work. Our measured $M_A$ is found to be in good agreement with the world average value obtained in previous deuterium filled bubble chamber experiments. The NOMAD measurement of $M_A$ is lower than those recently published by K2K and MiniBooNE collaborations. However, within the large errors quoted by these experiments on $M_A$, these results are compatible with the more precise NOMAD value., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur.Phys.J.C

Abstract: We present a measurement of the muon neutrino–nucleon inclusive charged current cross section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range 2.5 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 40 GeV . The significance of this measurement is its precision, ±4% in 2.5 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 10 GeV , and ±2.6% in 10 ⩽ E ν ⩽ 40 GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract: We report on properties of hadronic events from e+e− annihilation observed by the ALEPH detector at the large Electron Positron Collider at CERN. The center-of-mass energy was . Measured distributions of the global event-shape variables sphericity, aplanarity, thrust and minor value, and of the inclusive variables xp, p⊥in, p⊥out and y are presented. We measure a mean charged multiplicity in hadronic events of 〈Nch〉=21.3±0.1 (statistical)±0.6 (systematic). The data are in good agreement with QCD-based models which use the leading-logarithm approximation, and are less well described by a model using O(αs2) QCD.

27. The amino-terminal propeptide (PINP) of type I collagen is a clinically valid indicator of bone turnover and extent of metastatic spread in osseous metastatic breast cancer

Abstract: The efficacy control for the treatment of bone metastases in breast cancer is difficult and usually initiated later and with longer time between treatment cycles than the restaging of visceral or soft tissue metastases. The amino-terminal propeptide (PINP) of type I collagen as a biochemical indicator of bone turnover might facilitate early and valid disease surveillance. The utility of total PINP was investigated in metastatic breast cancer patients, with or without bone metastases (for monitoring of therapy). The results were compared to the established markers, osteocalcin and beta-carboxyterminal telopeptide (CTX) or crosslaps concentration.Baseline serum samples of 51 patients with metastastic breast cancer under chemotherapy were investigated. In total, 38 patients had been diagnosed with bone metastases while 13 had no evidence of metastastic spread to the bone. All the patients with bone spread received bisphosphonates in addition to systemic chemotherapy and/or antibody therapy or hormonal treatment. Osteocalcin, CTX and PINP levels were measured on an Elecsys 2010 analyzer (electrochemiluminescence immunoassay--ECLIA). The normal cut-off values were: osteocalcin41.3 pg/ml, CTX1008 pg/ml and PINP95 ng/ml. Based on overall treatment outcome, the patients were grouped as responders (CR/PR), with stable disease (SD) or displaying primary progression (PD).The baseline levels of PINP were significantly higher in patients with bone metastases (median: 92.8 ng/ml) than in those without (median: 63.2 ng/ml, p = 0.044). Patients with more than seven bone metastases had significantly higher PINP levels (median: 149.7 ng/ml) than those with fewer than seven (median: 67.6 ng/ml, p = 0.04). Significant differences were also found for osteocalcin and CTX, at p = 0.02 and p = 0.04, respectively, although the median levels remained under the normal cut-off levels. In terms of response assessment of bone spread, the PINP concentrations decreased in responders from 194.3 ng/ml to 100.4 ng/ml (p = 0.23). In patients with SD, PINP remained at the same level of approximately 70 ng/ml (p = 0.16), but increased in patients with PD from 83.4 ng/ml to 176.5 ng/ml (p = 0.14). These trends rather than statistical difference were probably due to the limited patient cohort. No differences were found for the serum concentrations of PINP, CTX and osteocalcin between post- and pre-menopausal women.The PINP levels of the osseous metastatic breast cancer patients were elevated at baseline in comparison to those without bone involvement; the levels correlated to the number of bone metastases but were independent of the menopausal status. Thus, the levels of PINP under therapy might correlate with the response to therapy. Osteocalcin and CTX did not show similar sensitivity for the surveillance of bone metastases.

The special background generation procedure was developed. The proton identification criteria are tuned to maximize the sensitivity to the Θ(+) signal as a function of x(F) which allows to study the Θ(+) production mechanism. We do not observe any evidence for the Θ(+) state in the NOMAD data. Abstract: First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. 30. Perspectives of immunotherapy in metastatic breast cancer

Abstract: Further improvements in the treatment of breast cancer can be expected with a better understanding of its pathophysiology and through biologically-oriented therapeutic interventions, as well as better identification of patient populations likely to benefit from specific therapies. Trastuzumab (Herceptin) is the first biological modifier, showing significant activity in patients with advanced breast cancer who exhibit HER-2/neu gene amplification and/or protein overexpression. Trastuzumab is approved for use in combination with paclitaxel or docetaxel as first-line chemotherapy. Combinations of a taxane, a platinum salt and trastuzumab are feasible and active and have proven an increased survival advantage. This is in addition to the benefit that has been shown for Herceptin in combination with monochemotherapy alone. Several groups have demonstated the ratio of serum HER-2/neu levels prior to initiation of Herceptin treatment to levels at the time of re-staging examination to be significantly higher in patients with a significant benefit from therapy as compared to patients with progressive disease. As a result of the survival improvements in the metastatic setting, Herceptin was quickly entered into development trials for adjuvant treatment. The significant cardiac toxicity that has been observed with trastuzumab/anthracycline combinations has led to two main strategies for integrating trastuzumab in the adjuvant setting: either the addition of trastuzumab to mostly anthracycline-based programs in a sequential approach, or the biologically-oriented strategy based on synergism between trastuzumab and chemotherapy agents including platinum compounds. Last but not least, the most important prerequisite for the optimal efficacy of Herceptin-based therapy remains a very strict selection of those patients with tumours that have HER-2/neu over-expression.

Abstract: Results of a detailed study of strange particle production in neutrino neutral current interactions are presented using the data from the NOMAD experiment. Integral yields of neutral strange particles (K0s, Lambda, Lambda-bar) have been measured. Decays of resonances and heavy hyperons with an identified K0s or Lambda in the final state have been analyzed. Clear signals corresponding to K* and Sigma(1385) have been observed. Abstract: Bose-Einstein Correlations in one and two dimensions have been studied, with high statistics, in charged current muon-neutrino interaction events collected with the NOMAD detector at CERN. In one dimension the Bose-Einstein effect has been analyzed with the Goldhaber and the Kopylov-Podgoretskii phenomenological parametrizations. The Goldhaber parametrization gives the radius of the pion emission region R_G = 1.01+/-0.05(stat)+0.09-0.06(sys) fm and for the chaoticity parameter the value lambda = 0.40+/-0.03(stat)+0.01-0.06(sys). Using the Kopylov-Podgoretskii parametrization yields R_KP = 2.07+/-0.04(stat)+0.01-0.14(sys) fm and lambda_KP = 0.29+/-0.06(stat)+0.01-0.04(sys). Different parametrizations of the long-range correlations have been also studied. The two-dimensional shape of the source has been investigated in the longitudinal co-moving frame. A significant difference between the transverse and the longitudinal dimensions is observed. The high statistics of the collected sample allowed the study of the Bose-Einstein correlations as a function of rapidity, charged particle multiplicity and hadronic energy. A weak dependence of both radius and chaoticity on multiplicity and hadronic energy is found., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: We report measurements of the behaviour of silicon diodes when exposed to integrated neutron doses of up to 5 x 10(13) neutrons/cm 2. The measurements have been made at diode temperatures between room temperature and -20-degrees-C. From measurements of the diode leakage current and depletion voltage, and consequent evaluations of the effective impurity concentration, the temperature dependence of these quantities is discussed in terms of the annealing behaviour of the diodes. Comments are made on the suitability of silicon as a detector medium for particle physics experiments at future accelerators.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for vμ → v e oscillations in the NOMAD experiment at CERN. The experiment looked for the appearance of ve in a predominantly vμ wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS. No evidence for oscillations was found. The 90% confidence limits obtained are Δm2 < 0.4 eV 2 for maximal mixing and sin2(2θ) < 1.4 × 10-3 for large Δm2. This result excludes the LSND allowed region of oscillation parameters with Δm2 ≳ 10 eV2. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The method developed for the calculation of the flux and composition of the West Area Neutrino Beam used by NOMAD in its search for neutrino oscillations is described. The calculation is based on particle production rates computed using a recent version of FLUKA and modified to take into account the cross sections measured by the SPY and NA20 experiments. These particles are propagated through the beam line taking into account the material and magnetic fields they traverse. The neutrinos produced through their decays are tracked to the NOMAD detector. The fluxes of the four neutrino flavours at NOMAD are predicted with an uncertainty of about 8% for nu(mu) and nu(e), 10% for antinu(mu), and 12% for antinu(e). Abstract: A search was made among $\nu_\mu$ charged current events collected in the NOMAD experiment for the reaction: $\nu_\mu + N \rightarrow \mu^- + D^{\star+} + hadrons \hookrightarrow D^0 + \pi^+ \hookrightarrow K^- + \pi^+ A $D^{\star+}$ sample composed of 47 events, with 90% purity, was extracted. The $D^{\star+}$ yield in $\nu_\mu$ charged current interactions was measured to be $T = (0.99 \pm 0.15(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.))$%. The mean fraction of the hadronic jet energy taken by the $D^{\star+}$ is $0.67 \pm 0.02(stat) \pm 0.02(syst.)$. The distributions of the fragmentation variables $z$, ${P_{T}}^2$ and $x_F$ for $D^{\star+}$ are also presented.

Abstract: The NOMAD Collaboration presents a study of opposite sign dimuon events in the framework of Leading Order QCD. A total of 2714 neutrino- and 115 antineutrino-induced opposite sign dimuon events with $E_{\mu 1}, E_{\mu 2} > 4.5$ GeV, $15 < E_{\nu} < 300$ GeV and $Q^{2} > 1\;(\mbox{GeV}/\mbox{c})^{2}$ are observed %in the data from the 1995 and 1996 runs. in the Front-Calorimeter of NOMAD during the 1995 and 1996 runs. The analysis yields a value for the charm quark mass of $m_{c} = 1.3^{+0.3\;+0.3}_{-0.3\;-0.3}\;\mbox{GeV}/\m box{c}^{2}$ and for the average semileptonic branching ratio of $B_{c} = 0.095^{+0.007\;+0.014}_{-0.007\;-0.013}$. The ratio of the strange to non-strange sea in the nucleon is measured to be $\kappa = 0.48^{+0.09 +0.17}_{-0.07 -0.12}$. The measured rate of charm-induced dimuon relative to single muon, as a function of neutrino energy, is consistent with the slow rescaling hypothesis of heavy quark production.

Abstract: The NOMAD trigger system is described in the present paper. It is made up of a large area plastic scintillator veto system, two trigger scintillator planes inside a 0.4 T magnetic field and their associated trigger electronics. Special features of the system consist of the use of proximity mesh photomultipliers which allow the trigger scintillators to operate in the magnetic field, and the use of custom-built VME modules which perform the trigger logic decisions, the signal synchronisation and gate generation, event counting and livetime calculations. This paper also includes a description of each of the NOMAD triggers, with their calculated and measured rates, efficiencies and livetimes.

Abstract: A search was made for a new light gauge boson $X$ which might be produced in $\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X$ decay from neutral pions generated by 450-GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of $X \to\pi^{0}$ conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With $1.45\times10^{18}$ protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1$\pm$2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio $Br(\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X)< (3.3 to 1.9) \times10^{-5}$ for $X$ masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c^2 is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, LaTex, 6 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract: The special merits of fibrin sealing are the possibility of simple atraumatic tissue union and hemostasis and, thus, decreased duration of surgical intervention. This technique is therefore already well established for a number of indications in surgical gynecologic endoscopy. These include, in particular, the reshaping of an ovary after extirpation of a cyst, the application during tubal anastomosis, and the sealing of iatrogenic perforations of the uterus. Unequivocal evidence of the efficacy of fibrin sealing of serous and peritoneal defects with the purpose of adhesion prophylaxis is not yet available. Whereas fibrin sealing due to its good long-term results is regarded as the preferred method for the first-mentioned indications, further studies with a large number of cases and long follow-up are necessary to enable a final evaluation of this technique for the latter indications. No complications were evident in the postoperative course or during follow-up in the 75 laparoscopic fibrin sealings carried out to date. In addition to its wound healing properties, fibrin sealing was found to be intraoperatively superior as the time-consuming endoscopic sutures were replaced in a simple and atraumatic manner; furthermore, a simultaneous hemostyptic action was attained.

Abstract: To date, hysteroscopy has become an integral part of the overall gynecologic surgical concept. In 156 women results of intrauterine hysteroscopic surgery are demonstrated to be at least comparable to those of conventional procedures. Moreover, a meta analysis of the literature (n = 10,000) as well as our own experience (n = 200) supports the view that complication rates may be minimized by a well-structured training program which includes the recently developed in vitro simulation trainer, the HysteroTrainer.

Abstract: A comparative study on thermal, mainly laser and high frequency electrosurgical techniques, was conducted. Indications, handling and morphometric results were correlated. Morphometrical findings suggest that minimal thermal tissue damage is associated by a decrease in the hemostatic effect. Additional bipolar coagulation is necessary when using the carbon dioxide laser or high frequency electrodes. As thermal tissue lesion is concerned, the two techniques differ only slightly, by fractions of millimeters. Concerning clinical handling and practicability at our department, as well as in the centers participating at the European Consensus Study on Lasers in Gynaecology, high frequency electrosurgery has proven the method of choice for endoscopic ablative procedures. The carbon dioxide laser (at laparoscopy) and the Nd:YAG contact laser (at hysteroscopy) are preferentially employed for reconstructive surgery (e.g. the carbon dioxide laser for treatment of distal tubal pathology or endometriosis, the Nd:YAG contact laser for hysteroscopic synechiolysis).

Abstract: To date the tremendous spread of operative laparoscopic procedures associated with monopolar high-frequency techniques has lead to an increase in complications caused by monopolar leakage currents. Experimental-surgical measurements on minipigs have shown no significant leakage currents in clinical relevant power range during laparoscopic application of a bipolar needle electrode as compared to monopolar electrodes. Practicability and safety of the bipolar electrode was proven in 100 operative laparoscopies for organ preserving or reconstructive surgery. In summary, with the new laparoscopic bipolar needle electrode a secure surgical instrument is available, with which finest tissue handling and minimal thermal damage feasible.

Abstract: We present the results obtained from measurements of the arrival time of hadronic particles in a segmented scintillator-uranium calorimeter which was equipped with dedicated time of flight scintillator hodoscopes in depths of 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0 and 4.5 $\lambda_{int^-}$Gaussian shaped time resolutions with $\sigma \approx$ 90 ps were obtained with $\pi^−$ beams of 30 GeV/ c and 70 GeV/ c momentum. We discuss to what extent non-Gaussian tails can be removed while keeping a reasonably high efficiency.
