Monetary rewards and punishments enhance motor performance and are associated with corticospinal excitability (CSE) increases within the motor cortex (M1) during movement preparation. However, such CSE changes have unclear origins. Based on converging evidence, one possibility is that they stem from increased glutamatergic (GLUTergic) facilitation and/or decreased type A gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA)-mediated inhibition within M1. To investigate this, paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation was used over the left M1 to evaluate intracortical facilitation (ICF) and short intracortical inhibition (SICI), indirect assays of GLUTergic activity and GABAA-mediated inhibition, in an index finger muscle during the preparation of sequences initiated by either the right index or little finger. Behaviourally, rewards and punishments enhanced both reaction and movement time. During movement preparation, regardless of rewards or punishments, ICF increased when the index finger initiated sequences, whereas SICI decreased when both the index and little fingers initiated sequences. This finding suggests that GLUTergic activity increases in a finger-specific manner whilst GABAA-mediated inhibition decreases in a finger-unspecific manner during preparation. In parallel, both rewards and punishments non-specifically increased ICF, but only rewards non-specifically decreased SICI as compared to neutral. This suggests that to enhance performance rewards both increase GLUTergic activity and decrease GABAA-mediated inhibition, whereas punishments selectively increase GLUTergic activity. A control experiment revealed that such changes were not observed post-movement as participants processed reward and punishment feedback, indicating they were selective to movement preparation. Collectively, these results map the intracortical excitability changes in M1 by which incentives enhance motor performance.

Quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering measurements have been performed using a 28Si projectile off a 90Zr target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. A Bayesian analysis within the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations is performed in a large parameter space of quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations (β2 and β4) of 28Si. Our results unambiguously show that 28Si is an oblate shaped nucleus with β2=-0.38±0.01 which is in excellent agreement with results from electromagnetic probes. The sign and magnitude of quadrupole deformation along with a precise value of hexadecapole deformation (β4=+0.03±0.01) of 28Si have been determined for the first time using QEL scattering. A remarkable agreement is obtained between the experimental and calculated β4 values of 28Si based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method. The present results demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the quasi-elastic scattering to the sign and magnitude to the ground state deformation parameters, thus affirming its suitability to be used for rare exotic nuclei using low intensity RIBs.

Low activation isotopic boron (11B) based magnesium diboride (Mg11B2) superconductors doped with biomass-derived activated carbon were synthesized using 11B and magnesium powder via solid-state reaction. The effect of carbon doping on the lattice structure and superconducting properties of Mg11B2 bulks were evaluated using X-ray powder diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and magnetization measurements. Precise refinement of structural parameters indicates successful substitution of carbon in Mg11B2 bulks. The critical current density (Jc) of carbon doped Mg11B2 synthesized at 650 °C was enhanced more than two times compared with the pure Mg11B2 bulk. Similar improvement was observed for the Mg11B2 bulks heat-treated at 800 °C. This enhancement is due to successful substitution of biomass-derived carbon with high surface area into Mg11B2 lattice. The flux pinning mechanism of pure and doped Mg11B2 bulks were investigated using the Dew-Hughes model. This study provides information regarding enhancement of the Jc of low activation Mg11B2 superconductors suitable for next-generation fusion magnets.

The objectives of this cross-sectional, nonintervention, observational study were to compare urine and blood parameters between cows consuming a positive dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) diet [early dry cows, DCAD + 250 mEq/kg of dry matter (DM), n = 15] with the same cows consuming a negative DCAD diet (−220 mEq/kg of DM) 10 d after moving them from the early dry to the prepartum group. The most remarkable finding was that cows consuming the anionic diet had very low urine pH and very low base excess in blood, suggestive of uncompensated metabolic acidosis. Importantly, the metabolomics data revealed that only urine concentrations of essential and aromatic amino acids were decreased, and that concentrations of total nonessential amino acids and glucogenic amino acids were increased in plasma and reciprocally decreased in urine, suggesting that the cows fed anionic salts were attempting to meet a high glucose demand by mobilizing gluconeogenic amino acid reserves. Notably, the dietary anionic salts exerted marked effects on glycerophospholipids, with a reduction in most phosphatidylcholine containing diacyl (PC aa) and acyl-alkyl (PC ae) moieties in plasma and urine. Further characterization of these metabolomic profiles may lead to the development of novel biomarkers to identify cows susceptible to metabolic acidosis and other metabolic diseases.

Here, the authors report the development of a versatile academic, SARSCoV-2 RT-qPCR molecular diagnostic test that uses 3D printed technology for sample collection, is implemented in rural setting in the US state of Virginia and validated in its population.

Floods are among Earth's most common and most destructive natural hazards, affecting human lives and properties directly and indirectly around the world. The frequency and magnitude of extreme flooding have been increasing in many parts of the world in recent decades (see, e.g. Berghuijs et al., 2017; Blöschl et al., 2019a; Marijnissen et al., 2019), hampering human well-being and economic growth in both developed and developing countries. Flood risk management carries out the flood risk assessment and uses appropriate resources (human, finance, science and technology, and nature) to control the flood risk (Han, 2011), which is an urgent challenge for the scientific and engineering communities to address. In a similar way to “Twenty-three unsolved problems in hydrology” (Blöschl et al., 2019b), despite decades of research in this field, there are still many unsolved problems in floods as well. This special issue “Flood Risk Assessment and Management” is an outcome of the session “Flood Risk Assessment and Management” in the Naturals Hazards Division at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly held in Vienna, Austria. The session series has been organized annually at EGU since 2018. This special issue presents a wide range of in-depth research studies based on flood modelling (including hydrological modelling and hydrodynamic modelling), hazard mapping, flood damage and risk assessment as well as studies that focus on flood relief prioritization, mitigation strategies and flood policies. Extraordinary floods and debris flows are also included due to dam and dike breaks and extreme storms over gullies in mountain areas. The nine articles in this special issue are broadly introduced in the following three categories.

Introduction: A 22-day-old male infant presented with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate with prominent premaxillary segment, wide alar base, flat alar domes and no columellar tissue, thus leading to a severe facial deformity. A presurgical nasoalveolar moulding (PNAM) procedure was planned to facilitate an optimal surgical approximation of the cleft and surrounding tissues. Methods: PNAM was performed on the basis of the hypothesis that ‘The palatal shelves continue to grow unabated if adequate relief is provided by wax mock up while preparing the feeding plate’. An intraoral device, which consisted of an acrylic feeding plate, was constructed after adequate wax mock up in the cleft area for passive moulding, along with extraoral traction force through active lip taping. A nasal stent was subsequently attached to lift the nasal domes and lengthen the columella. The changes thus achieved with PNAM were assessed using innovative photographic and model analyses. Results: On completion of PNAM, the qualitative photographic changes showed significant premaxillary setback, columellar lengthening and fullness of alar domes. The quantitative model analysis revealed reduction in the anteroposterior cleft gap by 5 mm and 5.5 mm on right and left sides, respectively. Transverse distance between the two palatal segments reduced by 3.5 mm, 8 mm and 8.5 mm in anterior, middle and posterior regions, respectively. Conclusion: Orthodontic intervention performed for 11 weeks by PNAM helped to retract the premaxilla, reduce the cleft gap, improve the arch form, approximate lip segments and distinctly lengthen the columella. Hence, it improved the morphology of the nose by correcting the flattened nasal wings. This aided the surgeon to achieve an optimal surgical repair. The mass of 27P is expected to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes, but large uncertainties and inconsistencies still exist in the reported 27P masses. We have used the β-decay spectroscopy of 27S to determine the most precise mass excess of 27P to date to be −659(9) keV, which is 63 keV (2.3σ) higher and a factor of 3 more precise than the value recommended in the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation. Based on the new 27P mass, the Si26(p,γ)27P reaction rate and its uncertainty were recalculated using Monte Carlo techniques. We also estimated the previously unknown mass excess of 27S to be 17678(77) keV, based on the measured β-delayed two-proton energy and the Coulomb displacement energy relations. The impact of these well-constrained masses and reaction rates on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been investigated by post-processing XRB and hydrodynamic nova models. Compared to the model calculations based on the masses and rates from databases, the abundance of A=26 in the burst ashes is increased by a factor of 2.4, while no substantial change was found in the XRB energy generation rate or the light curve. Our calculation also suggests that 27S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process, and the change of the Si26(p,γ)27P reaction rate is not sufficiently large to affect the conclusion previously drawn on the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic 26Al. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) strength distribution in 24Mg has been determined from background-free inelastic scattering of 386-MeV α particles at extreme forward angles, including 0∘. The ISGMR strength distribution has been observed for the first time to have a two-peak structure in a light-mass nucleus. This splitting of ISGMR strength is explained well by microscopic theory in terms of the prolate deformation of the ground state of 24Mg.

Cancer of the cervix uteri. Causes and prevention

Loss of eye has a bad effect on the psychology of the patient. Eye prosthesis is fabricated to regain the patient’s confidence by meticulous replacement of the missing eye. Immediate fitting of an anophthalmic socket with an artificial eye may not always be possible, and a delayed prosthesis delivery may result in settling and sinking of the prosthesis into the socket, therefore requiring orbital cavity conformation. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. This article presents a short review of three functional ocular impression techniques to achieve a better fit of the prosthesis to the defect area. These techniques aim to combine cosmetic excellence with comfort for greater benefit to the patients.

During the main and early recovery phase of a geomagnetic storm on February 18, 1998, the Equator-S ion composition instrument (ESIC) observed spectral features which typically represent the differences in loss along the drift path in the energy range (5–15 keV/e) where the drift changes from being E × B dominated to being gradient and curvature drift dominated. We compare the expected energy spectra modeled using a Volland-Stern electric field and a Weimer electric field, assuming charge exchange along the drift path, with the observed energy spectra for H+ and O+. We find that using the Weimer electric field gives much better agreement with the spectral features, and with the observed losses. Neither model, however, accurately predicts the energies of the observed minima.Key words. Magnetospheric physics (energetic particles trapped; plasma convection; storms and substorms)

Chemical industries often encounter non-Newtonian fluids with yield stress such as pulp suspensions, certain polymer and biopolymer solutions, and wastewater sludge. The visualization of the non-Newtonian fluid flow inside the stirred vessels is a challenging task since the vast majority of these fluids are opaque. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is a non-invasive flow-visualization technique which can be utilized effectively for the evaluation of the mixing of opaque fluids. In this study, a cylindrical mixing vessel equipped with a top-entering impeller was employed to mix the xanthan gum solution, which is a pseudoplastic fluid exhibiting yield stress. The main objective of this study was to employ the ERT technique in the continuous-flow mixing of non-Newtonian fluid in order to explore: (i) the effect of the impeller type (radial-flow and close clearance impellers) on the flow pattern generated inside the stirred tank (ii) the effect of inlet-outlet flow on the deformation of the cavern. The 2D and 3D tomograms enabled us to visualize the flow of the opaque fluid and to identify the existence of channeling and dead volume inside the stirred vessel in the continuous-flow mixing system. Moreover, the tomography images revealed that the cavern volume increased due to the deformation created by the inlet-outlet flow.

Scholarly web-based application programming interfaces (APIs) allow users to interact with information and data programmatically. Interacting with information programmatically allows users to create advanced information query workflows and quickly access machine-readable data for downstream computations. With the growing availability of scholarly APIs from open and commercial library databases, supporting access to information via an API has become a key support area for research data services in libraries. This article describes our efforts with supporting API access through the development of an online Scholarly API Cookbook. The Cookbook contains code recipes (i.e., tutorials) for getting started with 10 different scholarly APIs, including for example, Scopus, World Bank, and PubMed. API tutorials are available in Python, Bash, Matlab, and Mathematica. A tutorial for interacting with library catalog data programmatically via Z39.50 is also included, as traditional library catalog metadata is rarely available via an API. In addition to describing the Scholarly API Cookbook content, we discuss our experiences building a student research data services programming team, challenges we encountered, and ideas to improve the Cookbook. The University of Alabama Libraries Scholarly API Cookbook is freely available and hosted on GitHub. All code within the API Cookbook is licensed with the permissive MIT license, and as a result, users are free to reuse and adapt the code in their teaching and research.
