1. Organic Ices in Titan's Stratosphere

Abstract

Titan’s stratospheric ice clouds are by far the most complex of any observed in the solar system, with over a dozen organic vapors condensing out to form a suite of pure and co-condensed ices, typically observed at high winter polar latitudes. Once these stratospheric ices are formed, they will diffuse throughout Titan’s lower atmosphere and most will eventually precipitate to the surface, where they are expected to contribute to Titan’s regolith. Early and important contributions were first made by the InfraRed Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS) on Voyager 1, followed by notable contributions from IRIS’ successor, the Cassini Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS), and to a lesser extent, from Cassini’s Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) and the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) instruments. All three remote sensing instruments made new ice cloud discoveries, combined with monitoring the seasonal behaviors and time evolution throughout Cassini’s 13-year mission tenure. A significant advance by CIRS was the realization that co-condensing chemical compounds can account for many of the CIRS-observed stratospheric ice cloud spectral features, especially for some that were previously puzzling, even though some of the observed spectral features are still not well understood. Relevant laboratory transmission spectroscopy efforts began just after the Voyager encounters, and have accelerated in the last few years due to new experimental efforts aimed at simulating co-condensed ices in Titan’s stratosphere. This review details the current state of knowledge regarding the organic ice clouds in Titan’s stratosphere, with perspectives from both observational and experimental standpoints.

Abstract

An ice chamber for obtaining thin-film transmission spectra of Titan-relevant organic ices between 50 and 11,700 cm(exp −1) (200–0.85 μm) is described in detail in this work. The ice chamber, called the SPECtroscopy of Titan-Related ice AnaLogs chamber, is located in the Spectroscopy for Planetary ICes Environments laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Organic vapors are typically deposited between 30 and 150 K via a variable leak valve onto a chemical vapor deposition diamond substrate, where condensation directly into the solid state occurs. Quantitative thin-film infrared transmission spectra of the given ice or ice mixture are then measured, from which optical constants (complex indices of refraction) are computed. These optical constants in turn provide the necessary input for interpreting radiative transfer analyses of Cassini’s Composite InfraRed Spectrometer observations of Titan’s organic stratospheric ice clouds to determine their chemical compositions, abundances, and vertical distributions as functions of Titan latitude and season.

Abstract

Thanks to the Cassini-Huygens mission, Titan, the pale orange dot of Pioneer and Voyager encounters has been revealed to be a dynamic, hydrologically-shaped, organic-rich ocean world offering unparalleled opportunities to explore prebiotic chemistry. And while Cassini-Huygens revolutionized our understanding of each of the three layers of Titan--the atmosphere, the surface, and the interior--we are only beginning to hypothesize how these realms interact. In this paper, we summarize the current state of Titan knowledge and discuss how future exploration of Titan would address some of the next decade's most compelling planetary science questions. We also demonstrate why exploring Titan, both with and beyond the Dragonfly New Frontiers mission, is a necessary and complementary component of an Ocean Worlds Program that seeks to understand whether habitable environments exist elsewhere in our solar system., Submitted to the PSJ Focus Issue on Ocean World Exploration

Abstract

Numerous geological features that could be evaporitic in origin have been identified on the surface of Titan. Although they seem to be water–ice poor, their main properties – chemical composition, thickness, stratification – are essentially unknown. In this paper, which follows on a previous one focusing on the surface composition (Cordier, D., Barnes, J.W., Ferreira, A.G. [2013b]. Icarus 226(2),1431–1437), we provide some answers to these questions derived from a new model. This model, based on the up-to-date thermodynamic theory known as “PC-SAFT”, has been validated with available laboratory measurements and specifically developed for our purpose. 1-D models confirm the possibility of an acetylene and/or butane enriched central layer of evaporitic deposit. The estimated thickness of this acetylene–butane layer could explain the strong RADAR brightness of the evaporites. The 2-D computations indicate an accumulation of poorly soluble species at the deposit’s margin. Among these species, HCN or aerosols similar to tholins could play a dominant role. Our model predicts the existence of chemically trimodal “bathtub rings” which is consistent with what it is observed at the south polar lake Ontario Lacus. This work also provides plausible explanations to the lack of evaporites in the south polar region and to the high radar reflectivity of dry lakebeds.

The nitrogen fixation rates by two different types of electrical discharges, namely lightning and coronae, were studied over a wide range in CO2 and N2 mixing ratios. Nitric oxide (NO) is formed with a maximum energy yield estimated to be ~1.3×10^16 molecule/J at 80% CO2 and ~1.3×10^14 molecule/J at 50% CO2 for lightning and coronae discharges, respectively. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is only formed by coronae discharge with a maximum energy yield estimated to be ~1.2×10^13 molecule/J at 50% CO2. 9. New application of microwave digestion-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for multi-element analysis in komatiites.

Abstract

A new method using microwave digestion combined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was studied to analyze the elemental composition of a variety of komatiites samples. Microwave digestion consisted in two-stage heating and pressurizing acid treatments for maximum dissolution of the samples. We report here different quality control measurements (external and internal calibration, monitoring of reference materials) which involve standard deviation calculations and recovery examinations in order to test the precision and accuracy of the analytical procedure. Data for 17 elements (Na, P, K, T, V Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Pb, Al, F, Ca and Mg) in eight komatiite samples and two USGS basalt reference samples (BCR-2 and BHVO-2) are presented. We evaluate our new digestion and instrumental procedure. The element concentration obtained for BCR-2 and BHVO-2 agreed well with the certified values, the relative standard deviations were lower than 5% and recoveries were good. Our analytical results demonstrate that it reproduces accurately the concentrations of minor and trace elements in komatiites. The ease of digestion of the samples and the speed (less than 12 h) to digest the komatiite material makes this technique an efficient method to be used easily and routinely for preparing and analyzing komatiites samples for multiple elements determination.

Abstract

We report the first experimental study of nitrogen fixation by corona discharge on the anoxic primitive Earth. The energy yields of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N(2)O) were experimentally determined over a wide range of CO(2)-N(2) mixtures simulating the evolution of the Earth's atmosphere during the Hadean and Archean eras (from 4.5 ba to 2.5 ba). NO, the principal form of fixed nitrogen in lightning and coronal discharge in early Earth, is produced ten times less efficiently in the latter type of electrical discharge with an estimated maximum annual production rate of the order of 10(10) g yr(-1). For N(2)O the maximum production rate was estimated to be approximately 10(9) g yr(-1). These low rates of syntheses indicate that corona discharges as point discharges on the clouds and ground did not play a significant role in the overall pool of reactive nitrogen needed for the emergence and sustainability of life.
