Porosity and permeability measurements aid the characterisation of geothermal reservoirs as they improve understanding of the impact of rock–fluid interactions during the life cycle of wells. Core flooding experiments can help us comprehend the rock–brine electrochemical system as critical parameters like salinity, pH, temperature, or pressure change. If the clay mineral content is significant it can reduce permeability and porosity since these particles can block the pore throat network connectivity through clay migration or swelling. A multi-salinity experiment was conducted in three tight clay-bearing (kaolinite, chlorite, and glauconite) sandstones to study the impact of clay on their petrophysical properties. The experiment consisted of core-flooding brines with salinities of 75 000–200 000 and 0–50 000 ppm NaCl at very low flow rates. Electrical resistivity, the differential pressure across the sample, outlet brine electrical conductivity, and brine permeability were measured. Pore size distribution was acquired by measuring nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) T2 relaxation time. Cation-exchange capacity (CEC) was derived using the Waxman and Smits (1968) approach. The derived CECs were 71.5, 4.7, and 3.6 meq per 100 g for the kaolinite, chlorite, and glauconite sandstones, respectively. Kaolinite was the least water-sensitive as its permeability decreased uniformly. Chlorite and glauconite were more water-sensitive as in the low salinity range; their permeability increased, and both displayed a bimodal NMR T2 distribution and pore size rearrangement towards the mesoporosity and macroporosity range, indicating that the cation-exchange site prevailed within the pore space. This investigation highlights the importance of ensuring that appropriate fluid chemistry is used on brines flowing in clay-bearing geothermal reservoirs.

El Teatro de Cartagena es un importante exponente de la arquitectura monumental de la Hispania romana. Para su construcción fueron utilizados diversos pétreos locales, entre ellos una arenisca conocida como Tabaire. Este artículo tiene como objetivo la caracterización física del Tabaire, así como la identificación de sus formas de deterioro y el estudio de su consolidación mediante nanopartículas de cal y de dióxido de silicio (silicato de etilo). Los análisis iniciales mediante técnicas de imagen como la Microscopía Óptica (OM), Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido (SEM) y Tomografía de Rayos X (CT) muestran que es una roca de elevada porosidad y escasa dureza. La eficacia de los tratamientos consolidantes se comprobó mediante métodos no destructivos, basados en la identificación de la dispersión y penetrabilidad en el sustrato (OM y SEM) y en la detección de la variación del color (CIEL*a*b*), o mínimamente destructivos, como el peeling test y la dureza Shore-D, para conocer su incidencia en las características del material.

Eradication of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in certain historically low-prevalence regions remains elusive. A complete characterisation of the husbandry practices, biosecurity, and environment where farms are located is crucial to implement targeted in-farm risk mitigation protocols. Here, a detailed survey performed in 94 dairy cattle farms located in Navarra, a low-prevalence region of Spain between 2016 and 2020 was carried out. Data on 73 biosecurity, farm-, and environmental-level factors potentially associated with the risk of bTB occurrence were evaluated using an ordinal logistic regression model: farms were classified based on their prevalence index, a score linked to each farm to account for the severity and recurrence of bTB cases: 22.3% of the farms had a score of 1, 21.3% a score of 2, 26.6% a score of ≥ 3, and 29.8% were negative herds. A statistically significant association between a higher prevalence index and the frequency of badger sightings along with the lease of pastures to sheep during Winter was identified. Farms that detected badgers on a monthly to daily basis in the surroundings and those that leased pastures for sheep flocks during Winter were four [odds ratio, 95% CI (4.3; 1.1–17.5)] and three (3.1; 1.0–9.9) times more likely to have the highest prevalence index, respectively (predicted probabilityprevalence index≥3 = 0.7; 95% CI 0.3–0.9). AimsThe association between body mass index (BMI) fluctuation and BMI fluctuation rate with cardiovascular stress morbidities in a Caucasian European cohort was evaluated to ascertain the impact of weight cycling.MethodsA total of 4,312 patients of the Vascular-Metabolic CUN cohort (VMCUN cohort) were examined and followed up during 9.35 years ( ± 4.39). Cox proportional hazard ratio analyses were performed to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular stress-related diseases (CVDs) across quartiles of BMI fluctuation, measured as the average successive variability (ASV) (ASV = |BMIt0 − BMIt1| + |BMIt1 − BMIt2| + |BMIt2-BMIt3| +…+ |BMItn – 1 − BMItn|/n − 1), and quartiles of BMI fluctuation rate (ASV/year).ResultsThere were 436 incident cases of CVD-associated events involving 40,323.32 person-years of follow-up. A progressively increased risk of CVD in subjects with greater ASV levels was found. Also, a higher level of ASV/year was significantly associated with an increased risk of developing CVD stress independent of confounding factors with a value of 3.71 (95% CI: 2.71-5.07) for those in the highest quartile and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.33-2.50) for those in the third quartile.ConclusionsThe BMI fluctuation rate seems to be a better predictor than BMI fluctuation of the potential development of cardiovascular stress morbidities. The time-rated weight fluctuations are apparently more determinant in increasing the risk of a CVD than the weight fluctuation itself, which is remarkable in subjects under “yo-yo” weight patterns for precision medicine.

Abstract Multiphasic calcium phosphate powders were synthesized by the acidic route, using lactic acid as a chelating agent that allows the production of a stable and rich solution of calcium and phosphate ions at room temperature. After pH adjusting, without varying the concentrations of precursor solution, XRD and FTIR analyses showed different CaP phases before and after heat treatment at 1000 °C. At pH 5, brushite plate-like particles were produced, while at higher pH levels (7 to 12) nano-hydroxyapatite particles were formed. After the calcination process, partial and total decomposition of hydroxyapatite in the β-TCP phase was explained by XRF analysis due to the calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite of synthesized samples at pH 7 and 10. This work presents an important method to synthesize any desired CaP phase compositions by varying the pH level and subsequently performing heat treatment, which has a direct effect on morphology, crystallinity, and formation of different CaP powders.

Abstract Optomechanical crystal cavities (OMC) have rich perspectives for detecting and indirectly analysing biological particles, such as proteins, bacteria and viruses. In this work we demonstrate the working principle of OMCs operating under ambient conditions as a sensor of submicrometer particles by optically monitoring the frequency shift of thermally activated mechanical modes. The resonator has been specifically designed so that the cavity region supports a particular family of low modal-volume mechanical modes, commonly known as -pinch modes-. These involve the oscillation of only a couple of adjacent cavity cells that are relatively insensitive to perturbations in other parts of the resonator. The eigenfrequency of these modes decreases as the deformation is localized closer to the centre of the resonator. Thus, by identifying specific modes that undergo a frequency shift that amply exceeds the mechanical linewidth, it is possible to infer if there are particles deposited on the resonator, how many are there and their approximate position within the cavity region. OMCs have rich perspectives for detecting and indirectly analysing biological particles, such as proteins, viruses and bacteria.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar novos biomateriais fosfatados para regeneração de defeito ósseo crítico. Distribuíram-se 45 ratos Wistar em três grupos: CON (sem implantação de biomaterial), FCB (grânulos de fosfato de cálcio bifásico: fosfato tricálcico tipo β, β-TCP/pirofosfato de cálcio) e FCB/BV (FCB/vidro bioativo fosfatado), avaliados aos 15, 45 e 120 dias de pós-operatório. No grupo CON, observaram-se neoformação óssea restrita às bordas ósseas e preenchimento do defeito por delgado tecido conjuntivo fibroso. Em FCB e FCB/BV, os grânulos preencheram toda a extensão do defeito e apresentaram maior fragmentação em FCB/BV. A neoformação óssea foi mais evidente no FCB. De permeio às partículas dos biomateriais formou-se um tecido conjuntivo frouxo, que evoluiu para fibroso em FCB. Os biomateriais desencadearam discreta reação inflamatória crônica granulomatosa, que se tornou inconspícua. Conclui-se que os materiais foram biocompatíveis, atuaram como arcabouços tridimensionais, apresentaram potencial osteocondutor e favoreceram a regeneração óssea, principalmente FCB. A adição do vidro bioativo aumentou a biodegradabilidade de FCB/BV.

Introduction and objective: Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic, immune-mediated disease described in case series and publications worldwide. Over the past twenty years, the authors of different studies have attempted to evaluate its incidence and prevalence. The objetive of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in a group of children seen at 36 pediatric gastroenterology centers in ten Latin American countries. Materials and methods: A multicenter, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted that estimated the period prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in children seen at outpatient consultation and that underwent diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for any indication at 36 centers in 10 Latin American countries, within a 3-month time frame. Results: Between April and June 2016, 108 cases of eosinophilic esophagitis were evaluated. Likewise, an average of 29,253 outpatient consultations and 4,152 diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopies were carried out at the 36 participating centers. The period prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in the population studied (n = 29,253) was 3.69 cases × 1,000 (95% CI: 3.04 to 4.44), and among the children that underwent routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (n = 4,152), it was 26 x 1,000 (95% CI: 22.6 to 29.4). Conclusions: The general period prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in a group of children evaluated at 36 Latin American pediatric gastroenterology centers was 3.69 × 1,000, and in the children that underwent endoscopy, it was 26 × 1,000. There was important prevalence variability between the participating countries and centers. The present analysis is the first study conducted on the prevalence of pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis in Latin America. Resumen: Introducción: Las unidades de demencia (UD) realizan un abordaje integral y especializado de las personas con demencia. Su evaluación suele limitarse a aspectos asistenciales. El objetivo del trabajo fue conocer la satisfacción y calidad percibida por familiares/cuidadores de pacientes atendidos por una UD. Métodos: Encuesta autocumplimentada con cuestionario de elaboración propia a 236 acompañantes de pacientes ya conocidos en la UD durante 2015, estructurada en 6 dimensiones (accesibilidad, organización, profesionalidad, trato, información e infraestructura) y analizada mediante tasas de problemas. Resultados: Tasa de respuesta de 53,4%, resultando la mayoría mujeres, cónyuges o familiares de primer grado de los pacientes. La tasa de problemas global fue 15,0% (IC 95%: 13,9-16,1), con amplias variaciones por dimensión: desde 0,1% (IC 95%: 0,0-0,4) en «trato» y «profesionalidad» hasta 49,3% (IC 95%: 45,4-53,2) en «información». La espera se percibe excesiva a partir de 30 min. Los problemas de información se centraron en actividades no directamente asistenciales. La satisfacción fue 8,29/10 (mediana 8; DE: 1,45) con 77,3% (IC 95%: 69,8-74,8) de puntuaciones excelentes. El 99% recomendarían la UD. Conclusiones: El cuestionario ha ofrecido una visión global de la calidad percibida por los familiares/cuidadores de los pacientes atendidos, y permitido identificar y priorizar dónde implantar acciones correctoras. Ha demostrado ser una herramienta útil para evaluar y mejorar la calidad asistencial en las UD. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo ha sido cuantificar la demanda hospitalaria de origen penitenciario y caracterizar los principales diagnósticos como una medida de prevalencia y las patologías transmisibles y su evolución durante el periodo 2000-09. A partir del registro de altas del Consorcio Hospital General Universitario que atiende por convenio la demanda hospitalaria de los centros penitenciarios de Valencia provincia, se realizo un estudio transversal de las frecuencias de los diagnósticos y su distribución de acuerdo a las características personales. Se recuperaron 2.415 altas que tras la eliminación de inconsistencias aportaron 2.332 episodios de hospitalización. La edad media de los sujetos evolucionó desde 32,8 a 39,7 años. Los diagnósticos principales y secundarios agrupados (tabla 2) más frecuentes fueron: 1º. VIH (34,05%), 2º. Hepatitis C (14,67%), 3º. Dependencia Drogas (10,25%), 4º. Neumonías (8,58%), 5º. TBC (7,46%). A lo largo de la década se ha producido un cambio en el patrón infeccioso de la población penitenciaria que podemos considerar relacionado con: el envejecimiento relativo de la población reclusa, la sustitución de la vía intravenosa por otras vías no invasivas, el cambio relativo del origen nacional de los reclusos y los avances terapéuticos en el tratamiento de la infección por VIH.The aim of our study was to quantify the hospital demand originating from prisons and describe the main diagnoses as a measure of prevalence, as well as communicable diseases and their evolution during the period 2000-09. Using the discharge records of the University General Hospital under the terms of an agreement that meets the demand for hospitals from prisons in the province of Valencia, we carried out a cross-sectional study of the frequency distribution of diagnoses and their distribution according to personal characteristics. More than 2,415 discharges were recovered, which, after the removal of inconsistencies, provided 2,332 episodes of hospitalization. The average age of the subject ranged from 32.8 to 39.5 years. The most common grouped primary and secondary diagnoses (table 2) were: 1. HIV (34.05%), 2. Hepatitis C (14.67%), 3 º. Drug dependence (10.25%), 4 º. Pneumonia (8.58%), 5. TBC (7.46%). In the last decade there has been a change in the patterns of infection in the prison population. This may be related to: the relative aging of the prison population, the replacement of intravenous use by other non-invasive means, the change of nationality of prisoners and therapeutic advances in the treatment of HIV infection.

Heavyweight concrete is used for shielding in structures requiring protection against radiation. The addition of superplasticizers to mixes yields workable, high density materials with low water/cement ratios. This paper discusses the results of adding a polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer to heavyweight barite concrete to obtain a self-compacting mix. The fresh properties were characterized with trials suitable for self-compacting concrete. Since the large differences in constituent densities make segregation a key issue in this type of concrete, a specific trial was designed to check for homogeneity. The flowability, passing ability and resistance to segregation findings showed that the product obtained was a self-compacting concrete.

We report on the optomechanical properties of a breathing mechanical mode oscillating at 5.5 GHz in a 1D corrugated Si nanobeam. This mode has an experimental single-particle optomechanical coupling rate of |go,OM| = 1.8 MHz (|go,OM|/2π = 0.3 MHz) and shows strong dynamical back-action effects at room temperature. The geometrical flexibility of the unit-cell would lend itself to further engineering of the cavity region to localize the mode within the full phononic band-gap present at 4 GHz while keeping high go,OM values. This would lead to longer lifetimes at cryogenic temperatures, due to the suppression of acoustic leakage.
