Abstract

Extreme-ultraviolet to x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in operation for scientific applications are up to now single-user facilities. While most FELs generate around 100 photon pulses per second, FLASH at DESY can deliver almost two orders of magnitude more pulses in this time span due to its superconducting accelerator technology. This makes the facility a prime candidate to realize the next step in FELs—dividing the electron pulse trains into several FEL lines and delivering photon pulses to several users at the same time. Hence, FLASH has been extended with a second undulator line and self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) is demonstrated in both FELs simultaneously. FLASH can now deliver MHz pulse trains to two user experiments in parallel with individually selected photon beam characteristics. First results of the capabilities of this extension are shown with emphasis on independent variation of wavelength, repetition rate, and photon pulse length.

Abstract

Nature photonics 14(6), 391 - 397 (2020). doi:10.1038/s41566-020-0607-z, The European XFEL is a hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) based on a high-electron-energy superconducting linear accelerator. The superconducting technology allows for the acceleration of many electron bunches within one radio-frequency pulse of the accelerating voltage and, in turn, for the generation of a large number of hard X-ray pulses. We report on the performance of the European XFEL accelerator with up to 5,000 electron bunches per second and demonstrating a full energy of 17.5 GeV. Feedback mechanisms enable stabilization of the electron beam delivery at the FEL undulator in space and time. The measured FEL gain curve at 9.3 keV is in good agreement with predictions for saturated FEL radiation. Hard X-ray lasing was achieved between 7 keV and 14 keV with pulse energies of up to 2.0 mJ. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt den Nonprofit Sektor im Allgemeinen und bietet eine ausgiebige theoretische Würdigung seiner personalwirtschaftlichen Zusammenhänge.

Abstract

The activity of a catalyst increases as the degree of dispersion of the active component increases. In the case of supported catalysts it is possible to achieve dispersion right down to single active atoms. On the other hand, the smallest individual units of pure substances which can be obtained are generally 1 — 10 nm crystals. These finely dispersed systems can be stabilized by admixture with just small quantities of foreign substances. At temperatures above 600°C certain metal catalysts are capable of undergoing spontaneous dispersion under reaction conditions. — The degree of dispersion and the specificity of a catalyst are interrelated in a complex manner. Certain so-called demanding reactions proceed most readily on finely dispersed systems (with low-indexed crystallographic faces), others on coarsely dispersed active components (with predominantly highly-indexed faces). — Although the selectivity of reactions taking place on model catalysts frequently correlates with the degree of dispersion, such a relationship has only seldom been observed in the case of technical catalysts.

Abstract

We report the syntheses of tin(II) salts of the types [L 1 SnX]SnX 3 [L 1 =2,6-{(i-PrO) 2 (O)P} 2 C 5 H 3 N: 1, X=Cl; 2, X=Br], [L 2 SnCl]SnCl 3 [L 2 =2-{(i-PrO)Ph(O)P}-6-{(i-PrO) 2 (O)P}C 5 H 3 N: 3], [L 3 SnX]SnX 3 [L 3 =2,6-{MeO(O)C} 2 C 5 H 3 N: 4, X=Cl; 5, X=Br], [L 4 SnX]SnX 3 [L 4 =2,6-{Et 2 N(O)C} 2 C 5 H 3 N: 6, X=Cl; 7, X=Br]. These compounds were obtained by addition of SnX 2 to the corresponding ligand inducing autoionization of the respective tin(II) halide. The thermal stability of 1, 3, and 4 was elucidated, giving, under ester cleavage and cyclisation, the tin(II) derivatives 8-12. The reaction of [L 1 SnCl]SnCl 3 (1) with W(CO) 4 (thf) 2 afforded the tungsten tetracarbonyl complex [{L 1 SnCl}{SnCl 3 }W(CO) 4 ] (13), representing the first example in which a tin(II) stannate anion and a tin(II) stannylium cation simultaneously coordinate to a transition metal centre. The compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and in part by elemental analyses, IR and NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Abstract

4-Acetylpyridine 1 and malononitrile 2 were allowed to react in a 3MCRs with dimedone 3a or cyclohexa-1,3-dione 3b under reflux to afford 4-methyl-4-(pyridin-4-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4 H -chromene derivatives 4a,b respectively. The mechanism of the reaction has been studied and the structures elucidated by analytical, spectral as well as X-ray crystallographic data. Heterocyclic compounds find widespread application in pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. Docking analyses were performed on the synthesized compounds to assess their binding modes with various amino acids of the target protein tubulin (PDB Code - 1SA0). The results indicated promising binding scores for compounds 4a and 4b , suggesting a strong affinity for the tubulin binding site. Finally, ADMET for the synthesized compounds 4a, 4b, 5, 8a and 8b were carried out. The drug likeness and pharmacokinetic properties of the prepared compounds were also evaluated. 19. Evaluation of Post-Hospital Care of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults-A Survey among General Practitioners and Pediatricians in Germany.

Abstract

Background: The long-term effects of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in children and adolescents are increasingly discussed due to their potential impact on psycho-social development and education. This study aims to evaluate post-hospital care of children and adolescents after mild TBI using a physician survey., Methods: A self-developed, pre-tested questionnaire on diagnostics and treatment of TBI in outpatient care was sent to a representative sample of general practitioners and pediatricians in Germany., Results: Datasets from 699 general practitioners, 334 pediatricians and 24 neuropediatricians were available and included in the analysis. Nearly half of the general practitioners and most pediatricians say they treat at least one acute pediatric TBI per year. However, a substantive proportion of general practitioners are not familiar with scales assessing TBI severity and have difficulties assessing the symptoms correctly. Pediatricians seem to have better knowledge than general practitioners when it comes to treatment and outpatient care of TBI., Conclusions: To increase knowledge about TBI in outpatient physicians, targeted training courses should be offered, especially for general practitioners. Moreover, handing out written information about long-term effects and reintegration after TBI should be encouraged in outpatient practice.

20. Distinguishing between non-abelian topological orders in a quantum Hall system.

Abstract

Quantum Hall states can harbor exotic quantum phases. The nature of these states is reflected in the gapless edge modes owing to “bulk-edge” correspondence. The most studied putative non-abelian state is the spin-polarized filling factor (ν) = 5/2, which permits different topological orders that can be abelian or non-abelian. We developed a method that interfaces the studied quantum state with another state and used it to identify the topological order of ν = 5/2 state. The interface between two half-planes, one hosting the ν = 5/2 state and the other an integer ν = 3 state, supports a fractional ν = 1/2 charge mode and a neutral Majorana mode. The counterpropagating chirality of the Majorana mode, probed by measuring partition noise, is consistent with the particle-hole Pfaffian (PH-Pf) topological order and rules out the anti-Pfaffian order.

Abstract

Background: Moxifloxacin exerts excellent antibacterial activity against most putative periodontal pathogens and has been shown to kill bacteria in biofilm and host cells., Methods: Patients with chronic periodontitis were randomly assigned to receive a single subgingival application of a 0.125%, 0.4%, or 1.25% moxifloxacin gel or placebo gel immediately after full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP). Clinical efficacy measurements were assessed in sites with baseline probing depth (PD) of ≥5.4 mm at 6 weeks and 3 months and any adverse events were determined. In addition, putative periodontal pathogens and resistance of subgingival bacteria against moxifloxacin were assessed., Results: Data of 57 patients were included in the statistical analysis. In all treatment groups, the PD decreased from baseline to 3 months, with the greatest reduction seen in patients treated with moxifloxacin 0.4% (1.5 ± 0.6 mm; P = 0.023 compared to placebo), followed by patients receiving moxifloxacin 1.25% (1.2 ± 0.4), moxifloxacin 0.125% (1.1 ± 1.1), and placebo (1.0 ± 0.6). No linear trend for PD reduction with increasing moxifloxacin concentrations was found. Porphyromonas gingivalis showed the greatest reduction in prevalence among the assessed pathogens, without any significant intergroup differences. No correlation or systematic relationship between adverse events, including bacterial resistance against moxifloxacin, and the investigational gels was found., Conclusions: In periodontal pockets with PD of ≥5.4 mm, a single subgingival administration of a 0.4% moxifloxacin gel as an adjunct to SRP may result in additional PD reduction compared to SRP alone. In addition, the investigated moxifloxacin gels seem to be safe.
