En este artículo se analiza una red de distribución urbana de 23 kV típica de la zona central de México. El objetivo es determinar la distancia máxima de separación entre apartarrayos de línea que permita reducir las salidas de los circuitos de distribución por descargas atmosféricas directas e indirectas. Con base en las características eléctricas, ambientales, ceráunicas y geográficas de la zona, niveles de cortocircuito y las sobretensiones provocadas por maniobras rutinarias, se selecciona el apartarrayos siempre con el principal objetivo de determinar su espaciamiento adecuado sobre la línea para que éste funcione apropiadamente. La investigación se lleva a cabo con la ayuda del software llamado Alternative Transients Program (ATP) donde se realiza el cálculo de los parámetros de la línea utilizando el modelo de K.C. Lee, las sobretensiones transitorias por onda viajera y por conexión de capacitores también son simuladas. La motivación de este trabajo consiste principalmente en contar con un mayor sustento teórico y técnico (actualmente escueto) para determinar el espaciamiento entre apartarrayos de la red de distribución considerada y así aumentar la calidad del suministro eléctrico de la zona.

This paper provides additional negative data regarding the paper Evaluation of thermal properties of thin films by IR radiometry using a comprehensive set of Zr–O–N thin films [1]. In that paper, a matrix of samples was prepared to evaluate the so-called Extremum method for the analysis of Infrared (IR) radiometry data. Such matrix was composed by 3 types of films with 4 different thickness in 3 types of substrates, totalizing 36 samples in total. The data of this paper can be divided into three separate categories: i) lack of adhesion of the films deposited on Teflon, simultaneously to the films deposited on other substrates. ii) Improvement of the signal and signal-to-noise ratio on samples that did not present an extremum (minimum or maximum) using the initial (more conventional) way of measurement. iii) It is also presented a failed fitting of the IR radiometry data created with entangled material parameters. All this data is relevant for researchers devoted to measurement of thermal properties of thin films by IR radiometry that employ the two layer model and Extremum Method. Abstract  The tribological performance of lubricants is favourably altered by adding small amounts of nanoparticles which provide reduced wear and low friction. However, one of the main difficulties of using nanoparticles as additives is their dispersion or dissolution in lubricant oils, typically of hydrocarbon nature. With the surface modification of nanoparticles through long chain high molecular weight hydrocarbons, stable dispersions in lubricant oils become feasible. Here we show that using surface-modified Pd nanoparticles (2 nm size) with tetraalkylammonium chains, stable dispersions in lubricant oils become feasible with excellent tribological properties (friction 0.07, wear resistance 10−10 mm3/Nm). Electrical contact measurements were also used to monitor the conductivity of the contact during sliding. The use of these nanoparticles made decrease the electrical resistance of the contact a percentage of 97 to 99.5% in comparison with the initial value measured for the base oil alone. To understand these phenomena the contact surfaces and Pd nanoparticles were studied after friction by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The outstanding performance is attributed to a combination of factors as metallic character of palladium, nanometric size, and replenishment of Pd nanoparticles onto the contact forming a transfer layer. This discovery opens new perspectives of using metallic nanoparticles as lubricant additives for small contacts and connectors applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to describe correlations between glucose, insulin and adipokine levels and the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index with regards to the presence/absence of fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) rs9939609 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-y rs1801282 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as indicators of body mass index in adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between September and December 2016 in Toluca, Mexico. A total of 71 students between 14–18 years old were included. Various anthropometric and laboratory measurements were collected, including lipid profile, glucose, insulin and adipokine levels and HOMA index. The degree of association between variables was evaluated with regards to the presence/absence of the SNPs. Results: Leptin levels were significantly higher among female students (P = 0.001), although adiponectin levels did not differ significantly (P = 0.060). There were significant positive correlations between insulin levels and HOMA index with FTO (r = 0.391; P = 0.007 and r = 0.413; P = 0.005, respectively) and PPARγ (r = 0.529; P = 0.007 and r = 0.537; P = 0.007, respectively) SNPs. Leptin showed a significant positive correlation in the presence of PPARγ (r = 0.483; P = 0.007) or in the absence of both SNPs (r = 0.627; P = 0.039). However, adiponectin was significantly negatively correlated in the presence of FTO, either alone (r = −0.333; P = 0.024) or in combination with PPARγ (r = −0.616; P = 0.043). Conclusion: The presence of FTO and/or PPARγ SNPs might be related to a genetic predisposition to metabolic syndrome. Protein kinase D (PKD) family members play controversial roles in prostate cancer (PC). Thus, PKD1 is nearly absent in advanced tumours, where PKD2 and PKD3 are upregulated. Additionally, consequences of activation of these kinases on PC progression remain largely unclear. Here, we first investigated PKD function on PC cell motility, analysing the underlying molecular mechanisms. We find a striking decrease of Snail levels after PKD inhibition followed by cell migration and invasion impairment, demonstrating an unprecedented role of PKD activity on the regulation of this key transcription factor in PC progression. Specifically, we show that PKD2 activity mediates the effects of MEK/ERK pathway on Snail expression, establishing a joint function of ERK/PKD2/Snail cascade in PC cell invasion regulation. These results led us to address the clinical relevance of the correlation between PKD2 and ERK activities with Snail abundance in samples from PC patients at different stages, analysing its impact on tumour prognosis and patients´ survival. Importantly, this is the first study defining a direct correlation between active PKD2 and Snail levels, further linked to ERK activity. We also evidence that PKD2 activity is associated with important poor prognostic factors. Thus, PC patients with the expression pattern: active PKD2 high /active ERK high /Snail high exhibit increased invasiveness and metastasis, and decreased survival. The great interest in aluminium nitride thin films has been attributed to their excellent dielectric, thermal and mechanical properties. Here we present the results of amorphous AlN films obtained by atomic layer deposition. We used trimethylaluminum and monomethylhydrazine as the precursors at a deposition temperature of 375-475 °C. The structural and mechanical properties and chemical composition of the synthesized films were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron and probe microscopy and nanoindentation. The obtained films were compact and continuous, exhibiting amorphous nature with homogeneous in-depth composition, at an oxygen content of as low as 4 at%. The mechanical properties were comparable to those of AlN films produced by other techniques.

Dual specificity phosphatase 1 (DUSP1) is crucial in prostate cancer (PC), since its expression is downregulated in advanced carcinomas. Here, we investigated DUSP1 effects on the expression of mesenchymal marker Snail, cell migration and invasion, analyzing the underlying mechanisms mediated by mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) inhibition. To this purpose, we used different PC cells overexpressing or lacking DUSP1 or incubated with MAPKs inhibitors. Moreover, we addressed the correlation of DUSP1 expression with Snail and activated MAPKs levels in samples from patients diagnosed with benign hyperplasia or prostate carcinoma, studying its implication in tumor prognosis and survival. We found that DUSP1 downregulates Snail expression and impairs migration and invasion in PC cells. Similar results were obtained following the inhibition of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK). In clinical samples, we evidenced an inverse correlation between DUSP1 expression and Snail levels, which are further associated with JNK and ERK activation. Consequently, the pattern DUSP1 high /activated JNK low /activated ERK low /Snail low is associated with an overall extended survival of PC patients. In summary, the ratio between DUSP1 and Snail expression, with additional JNK and ERK activity measurement, may serve as a potential biomarker to predict the clinical outcome of PC patients. Furthermore, DUSP1 induction or inhibition of JNK and ERK pathways could be useful to treat PC.

Background: In neurodegenerative disorders or in normal aging humans a relationship between muscle mass and/or performance and brain volume was observed, that is not dependent on age or other confounding factors. The aim of the present study is to analyse the relationship between lean mass and handgrip strength in alcoholics, who frequently show brain and muscle atrophy., Methods: It was included 101 male patients aged 58.35 ± 11.59 years, and 44 controls, all of them workers of our hospital, drinkers of less than 20 g ethanol/day, of similar age. Patients and controls underwent dominant handgrip assessment with a Collins' dynamometer, whole body composition analysis by densitometry, and brain computed tomography (CT) examination, with further calculation of several indices indicative of brain atrophy., Main Results: 1) Brain atrophy is a very common finding among alcoholics, both among cirrhotics and non-cirrhotics. 2) Alcoholics show a marked reduction in handgrip strength, and also in lean mass, especially at the arms and legs -but not in the trunk, even if patients with ascites were excluded.3) There is a relationship between reduced lean mass and brain atrophy, and a close correlation between handgrip strength and brain atrophy, that is independent of age and liver function. 4) Total fat amount is not different among alcoholics and controls, but there are marked differences in fat distribution: alcoholics show less fat in arms, but more fat in trunk, so that if we calculate the peripheral fat/trunk fat index, marked differences were observed among alcoholics and controls. Neither total fat nor fat distribution were related to brain atrophy., Conclusion: among alcoholics, as in other neurodegenerative conditions, there is a relationship between reduced lean mass and brain atrophy, and a close correlation between handgrip strength and brain atrophy, that is independent of age, duration of ethanol consumption and liver function., (Copyright © 2018. Resveratrol is a polyphenol with chemopreventive properties against prostate cancer; however, the mechanisms underlying its actions are not completely understood. Previously, we demonstrated that DUSP1 induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells; therefore in the present study we investigated the role of this phosphatase on resveratrol effects. Moreover, we analysed the efficiency of combined treatment of resveratrol and the chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin on cellular viability and apoptosis and its relation with DUSP1 in prostate cancer cells. We found that resveratrol up-regulates DUSP1 expression in androgen-independent prostate cancer cells, which in turn, is involved in the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway and Cox-2 expression. This phosphatase is required for the induction of apoptosis achieved by resveratrol, but does not regulate the effects of this compound on cell cycle. Furthermore, we show that resveratrol cooperates with cisplatin both in the up-regulation of DUSP1 levels and in the promotion of apoptosis, suggesting that DUSP1 is a major determinant of cisplatin sensitivity to apoptosis. These results reveal a novel molecular mechanism by which resveratrol induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells, and highlight the importance of DUSP1 in future therapeutic approaches based in the use of this polyphenol and cisplatin., (Copyright © 2018. Background & Aims: Some studies have illustrated the association between serum lipid profile and bone mineral density (BMD) or fractures. None of these studies was performed among alcoholics, despite the fact that alcoholism may affect both bone mass and lipid metabolism. We here analyse the relationship of serum lipid profile with bone mass among a population of 280 heavy alcoholics (29 women)., Methods: patients underwent a densitometric assessment of BMD and determination of a serum lipid panel. Castelli index (Total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol) and the LDL/HDL cholesterol index were calculated., Results: There was a direct correlation between both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and femoral neck (r = 0.17 and r = 0.20, respectively) and lumbar spine (r = 0.16 and r = 0.20) T score, total BMD (r = 0.14 and r = 0.18) or pelvis BMD (r = 0.16 and r = 0.23; p < 0.025 in all cases). HDL-cholesterol showed no relationship with BMD. Serum triglycerides were also directly related to T score at the lumbar spine (ρ = 0.13; p = 0.032) and pelvis BMD (ρ = 0.13; p = 0.037). Pelvis BMD was significantly related to Castelli index (ρ = 0.15) and LDL/HDL index (ρ = 0.18; p < 0.015 in both cases). Multivariate analysis showed that the association between the serum lipid panel and BMD was independent of liver function and body mass index., Conclusions: Therefore, BMD was directly related to total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in heavy alcoholism. This counter intuitive observation adds to others derived from several similar studies conducted in different population groups but not in alcoholics as of yet. Aim: Fibroblast growth factor (FGF-23) and α-Klotho (Klotho) levels may be altered in inflammatory conditions, possibly as compensatory mechanisms. Klotho exerts a protective effect on neurodegeneration and improves learning and cognition. No data exist about the association of Klotho and FGF-23 levels with brain atrophy observed in alcoholics. The aim of this study is to explore these relationships., Short Summary: FGF-23 and Klotho levels are altered in inflammation, possibly as compensatory mechanisms. Klotho enhances learning, but its role in ethanol-mediated brain atrophy is unknown. We found higher FGF-23 and lower Klotho levels in 131 alcoholics compared with 41 controls. Among cirrhotics, Klotho was higher and inversely related to brain atrophy., Methods: The study was performed on 131 alcoholic patients (54 cirrhotics) and 41 age- and sex-matched controls, in whom a brain computed tomography (CT) was performed and several indices were calculated., Results: Marked brain atrophy was observed among patients when compared with controls. Patients also showed higher FGF-23 and lower Klotho values. However, among cirrhotics, Klotho values were higher. Klotho was inversely related to brain atrophy (for instance, ventricular index (ρ = -0.23, P = 0.008)), especially in cirrhotics. Klotho was also directly related to tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha (ρ = 0.22; P = 0.026) and inversely to transforming growth factor (TGF)-β (ρ = -0.34; P = 0.002), but not to C-reactive protein (CRP) or malondialdehyde levels. FGF-23 was also higher among cirrhotics but showed no association with CT indices., Conclusions: Klotho showed higher values among cirrhotics, and was inversely related to brain atrophy. FGF-23, although high among patients, especially cirrhotics, did not show any association with brain atrophy. Some inflammatory markers or cytokines, such as CRP or TGF-β were related to brain atrophy.

Gut microbiota is closely related to acute infectious diarrhea, one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in children worldwide. Understanding the dynamics of the recovery from this disease is of clinical interest. This work aims to correlate the dynamics of gut microbiota with the evolution of children who were suffering from acute infectious diarrhea caused by a rotavirus, and their recovery after the administration of a probiotic, Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745. The experiment involved 10 children with acute infectious diarrhea caused by a rotavirus, and six healthy children, all aged between 3 and 4 years. The children who suffered the rotavirus infection received S. boulardii CNCM I-745 twice daily for the first 5 days of the experiment. Fecal samples were collected from each participant at 0, 3, 5, 10, and 30 days after probiotic administration. Microbial composition was characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Alpha and beta diversity were calculated, along with dynamical analysis based on Taylor's law to assess the temporal stability of the microbiota. All children infected with the rotavirus stopped having diarrhea at day 3 after the intervention. We observed low alpha diversities in the first 5 days ( p -value < 0.05, Wilcoxon test), larger at 10 and 30 days after probiotic treatment. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed differences in the gut microbiota of healthy children and of those who suffered from acute diarrhea in the first days ( p -value < 0.05, ADONIS test), but not in the last days of the experiment. Temporal variability was larger in children infected with the rotavirus than in healthy ones. In particular, Gammaproteobacteria class was found to be abundant in children with acute diarrhea. We identified the microbiota transition from a diseased state to a healthy one with time, whose characterization may lead to relevant clinical data. This work highlights the importance of using time series for the study of dysbiosis related to diarrhea.

The animal microbiota (including the human microbiota) plays an important role in keeping the physiological status of the host healthy. Research seeks greater insight into whether changes in the composition and function of the microbiota are associated with disease. We analyzed published 16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomic sequencing (SMS) data pertaining to the gut microbiotas of 99 subjects monitored over time. Temporal fluctuations in the microbial composition revealed significant differences due to factors such as dietary changes, antibiotic intake, age, and disease. This article shows that a fluctuation scaling law can describe the temporal changes in the gut microbiota. This law estimates the temporal variability of the microbial population and quantitatively characterizes the path toward disease via a noise-induced phase transition. Estimation of the systemic parameters may be of clinical utility in follow-up studies and have more general applications in fields where it is important to know whether a given community is stable or not. IMPORTANCE The human microbiota correlates closely with the health status of its host. This article analyzes the microbial composition of several subjects under different conditions over time spans that ranged from days to months. Using the Langevin equation as the basis of our mathematical framework to evaluate microbial temporal stability, we proved that stable microbiotas can be distinguished from unstable microbiotas. This initial step will help us to determine how temporal microbiota stability is related to a subject's health status and to develop a more comprehensive framework that will provide greater insight into this complex system.

The genus Lactobacillus includes over 215 species that colonize plants, foods, sewage and the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of humans and animals. In the GIT, Lactobacillus population can be made by true inhabitants or by bacteria occasionally ingested with fermented or spoiled foods, or with probiotics. This study longitudinally surveyed Lactobacillus species and strains in the feces of a healthy subject through whole genome sequencing (WGS) data-mining, in order to identify members of the permanent or transient populations. In three time-points (0, 670 and 700 d), 58 different species were identified, 16 of them being retrieved for the first time in human feces. L. rhamnosus, L. ruminis, L. delbrueckii, L. plantarum, L. casei and L. acidophilus were the most represented, with estimated amounts ranging between 6 and 8 Log (cells g(-1) ), while the other were detected at 4 or 5 Log (cells g(-1) ). 86 Lactobacillus strains belonging to 52 species were identified. 43 seemingly occupied the GIT as true residents, since were detected in a time span of almost 2 years in all the three samples or in 2 samples separated by 670 or 700 d. As a whole, a stable community of lactobacilli was disclosed, with wide and understudied biodiversity., (© 2016 The Authors. Background: To describe the reference values for the Spanish version of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF), considering the differences according to parity and previous breastfeeding experience., Methods: Cross-sectional study in five hospitals in Valencia and one in Murcia, Spain, in a convenience sample of 949 in-hospital breastfeeding women, with no medical problems in the mothers or newborns hindering breastfeeding. Data on sociodemographic and obstetric variables, and on breastfeeding self-efficacy, were collected using the BSES-SF. Central tendency, dispersion and percentile data were calculated to generate reference values for the entire sample, and by parity and previous experience., Results: The level of self-efficacy was significantly lower (p <0.001) among primiparous women (mean =47.67±11.03) or those without previous experience (mean =47.30±11.18) than among multiparas (mean =52.87±10.66) or women with previous experience (mean =53.93±9.93). The P25 and P75 percentiles for the BSES-SF were, respectively, 42 and 59 for the entire sample; 39 and 56 for women without children or without previous experience; 46 and 61 for mothers with children; and 47 and 62 for mothers with previous experience., Conclusions: The specific percentiles obtained by parity or previous experience should be considered the reference values for comparing the level of self-efficacy of a given case, and for evaluating and planning educational postpartum support interventions.

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared with three different capping systems: a tetralkylammonium salt, an alkanethiol, and a thiol-derivatized neoglycoconjugate. Also gold NPs supported on a porous TiO(2) substrate have been investigated. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been used to determine the electronic behavior of the different capped/supported systems regarding the electron/hole density of d states. Surface and size effects, as well as the role of the microstructure, have been also studied through an exhaustive analysis of the EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) data. Very small gold NPs functionalized with thiol-derivatized molecules show an increase in d-hole density at the gold site due to Au-S charge transfer. This effect is overcoming size effects (which lead to a slightly increase of the d-electron density) for high S:Au atomic ratios and core-shell microstructures where an atomically abrupt Au-S interface likely does not exist. It has been also shown that thiol functionalization of very small gold NPs is introducing a strong distortion as compared to fcc order. To the contrary, electron transfer from reduced support oxides to gold NPs can produce a higher increase in d-electron density at the gold site, as compared to naked gold clusters.
