International audience; Today, mobile networks are witnessing an exponential growth of traffic volumes, linked to new services, especially for smart cities and smart-grid. The European Celtic-Plus SooGREEN project, started mid 2015, is targeting to reduce the energy consumption of the services in different mobile architectures in interaction with smart-grid. SooGREEN is focused on the services energy consumption modelling and measurement, the dynamic optimization of the mobile access network and of the content delivery, the design of an Energy Efficient Virtualized and Centralized Radio Access Network (RAN), and the bi-directional interaction of the mobile network with the smart-grid. This paper presents insight into the project after its first year, and discusses research trends in green communication networks for the future.

Medium voltage dc distribution systems are presently of interest for future naval warships. In order to provide hardware validation for research associated with the development of these systems, the Purdue Reduced-Scale Naval DC Microgrid has been constructed. This paper documents the system being constructed and provides some initial test results.

This paper presents the evolution of the energy power supply of telecommunication systems. The exchange and transmission equipment, centralized or distributed, need less and less power. The power is essentially used under electronic voltage (80 % under 5 V and 3 V for new technologies and some 12 V). Only 20 % of the power is delivered under 54 V for the remote power supply of the subscriber line. This voltage is no longer useful for the GSM radio network and FTTC optical network. Until now, the standardized voltage interface 48 V or 60 V remains the reference for telecommunication equipment. This voltage is supplied by decentralized DC cabinets having 1 hour autonomy, installed near the system or even integrated in the system itself. These cabinets are powered by the high availability GEODE AC source under 3 phase AC 400 V voltage of the public mains. Associated computers for complementary services, are powered by UPS providing an autonomy of 10 to 15 min. The standardized interface with the equipment is in this case the single phase public AC mains 230 V voltage. So, in the same centers, two uninterrupted power sources, DC 48 V and AC 230 V, run together with two standardized voltage interfaces, DC and AC. The TENOR project's aim is the unification of these two power supply methods with a single AC interface applicable to any size of installation. This result can be achieved through the new concept of distributed energy storage. >

A microprocessor unit has been developed that monitors a PV power plant through the public telephone network and with a Mintel terminal; records the battery voltage, the temperature, and operation parameters; and has a mean power of about 75 mW with automatic wake-up operation mode. This device is currently operating at various sites, and the first results demonstrate its effectiveness from the technical, economical, and psychological points of view. >

Ten years ago, more than 90% of the power consumption took place in the central office and 10% in the access network and customer equipment. This situation is likely to be inverted in the next decade. Reliable and cost effective powering is a challenge for the rollout of active equipment in the outside plant. Operator independence from power utility companies as well as added flexibility in powering the equipment are key issues. This paper shows the results obtained in a EURESCOM project and should ease the evaluation, specification, design and implementation of a novel remote-powering scheme for the active external cabinet.

This article is in line with the following papers. - GEODE, an electrical energy supply with high availability presented at the TOKYO Conference, - A new material and data processing for a high availability target : the GEODE system presented at the New-Orleans Conference. The introduction of new power supply equipment in telecommunications systems has brought about nex operating methods based on the use of microprocessors within the energy equipment. The first part of this article discloses the structure of the data transmission network used as well as the role of each of its constituent entities. The second part describes the operating method selected and reveals the value they add to maintenance operations : simplicity and effectiveness.

Following a general presentation of the system architectures for two types of reliable energy stations, GEODE and ALFATEL, used in telecommunication facilities, the authors describe the concept of a centralized management system covering several energy stations situated at different geographical locations. The role of communication with the power supply station monitoring units is then described. This makes it possible to define the functions carried out by the management unit, some of which may be operated through remote control by staff on standby duty. The functions of remote monitoring of processes, statistical studies, inventories, background records, man/machine relationships, and maintenance assistance are backed up by a PC-type machine . After a general presentation of a new kind of supply systems for telecommunication exchange developped from the A.C. source to DC outputs ; we give an overview of one of its most important subset: the decentralized DC rack ; it will be another opportunity to emphasize concepts like : - short battery autonomy, - use of the redundancy on the exchange, - wide voltage range, - high efficiency, - modularity of batteries, rectifiers, - helps to operation through control/command unit We present also the choice of sealed batteries and the monitoring involved by this technology: - charge/discharge/floating used to increase life time, - automatic testing for the detection of shortage of autonomy. Then the following points are outlined : - the AC wiring and DC coupling of the switching rectifier, - the computer structure for control/command and maintenance functions. * GEODE : Control of the energy and optimization of the equipments.
